The verdict
A struggling luxury off-road suv, strong on value and held back by efficiency.
The 2020 Defender is the launch model of Land Rover's ground-up reboot, and it backs up the hype with real hardware: an 8,201-lb tow rating, full-time 4x4 with low range, and 38°/31°/40° approach/breakover/departure angles that make it a genuine factory off-roader. The air suspension also gives it a surprisingly plush on-road ride for something this capable in the dirt. The tradeoffs are steep, though — 18 MPG combined on required premium fuel, no NHTSA or IIHS crash rating for this model year, Land Rover's chronically weak reliability record, and launch-year dealers who routinely tacked $10,000-$20,000 onto the sticker price. This is a car for buyers who want a design icon with serious trail credentials and can stomach the running costs and first-year risk that come with it.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the Defender's strongest categories.2.34C+
The all-new L663 Defender launched for US model year 2020 as the 110 only (the 90 two-door followed as a 2021 US model year). The volume engine is the 2.0L turbo-four P300.
Peak torque for the volume P300 engine, delivered from a low rev range typical of the Ingenium turbo-four.
A body-on-frame-replacing monocoque off-roader at roughly 4,800 lbs curb weight is not quick with the base four-cylinder; the straight-six P400 is nearly two seconds faster.
The Ingenium turbo-four is smooth and quiet at cruise but reviewers note it has to work hard to move the Defender's considerable mass, with some turbo lag off the line; the optional six is markedly more relaxed.
The ZF 8-speed automatic shared across the Defender lineup is a well-regarded unit — crisp, well-timed shifts with no notable hunting, consistent with ZF's reputation in other Land Rover/Jaguar products of this era.
Maximum conventional towing across the 2020 Defender 110 lineup, achieved with the optional P400 six and factory tow package — class-leading for a mid-size luxury off-road SUV.
Full-time all-wheel drive is standard across every 2020 Defender 110 trim, with a two-speed transfer case (low range standard), locking center differential, Terrain Response 2 with configurable drive modes, and an optional locking rear differential.
An all-new body-on-frame-replacing monocoque built explicitly for serious off-roading: standard air suspension giving up to 11.5 in of ground clearance, 38° approach / 31° breakover / 40° departure angles, up to 35.4 in wading depth, and a dedicated low-range transfer case — this is a genuine off-road flagship, not a soft-roader with cladding.
For US MY2020, the Defender 110 offers two gasoline engines (P300 turbo-four, P400 mild-hybrid turbo-six) — covers a performance spread but no hybrid, PHEV, or diesel option reached the US this year (the P400e PHEV arrived later).
2Efficiency & RangeThe Defender's lowest-graded category.0.00F
EPA combined rating for the base P300 four-cylinder Defender 110, the volume configuration. A large, boxy, roughly 4,800-lb off-roader runs toward the bottom of the gas SUV band.
EPA city rating for the volume P300 Defender 110.
EPA highway rating for the volume P300 Defender 110.
Computed from the Defender 110's 23.8-gallon fuel tank and the EPA combined rating for the volume P300 engine; Land Rover does not publish a range figure directly.
EPA's standard annual fuel cost estimate for the volume P300 Defender 110, driven up by both the sub-average combined MPG and the premium-fuel requirement.
Premium unleaded is required (not merely recommended) across the entire 2020 Defender lineup, adding a real per-fill-up cost on top of the already below-average MPG.
3SafetyGrades below the middle of the scale.1.03D
NHTSA has not crash-tested the all-new 2020 Land Rover Defender in its launch model year; no overall, frontal, side, or rollover rating has been published for the L663 generation. Low-volume imports are frequently skipped by the agency's testing program.
IIHS has not crash-tested the new-generation Defender in its 2020 debut year, so there is no Top Safety Pick award and no published crashworthiness subtest result to credit. The Euro NCAP result (announced December 2020) is a genuinely strong independent outcome but uses a different protocol and panel of tests, and the vehicle it covers is the European-spec 110 — suggestive of a sound structure, not a substitute for a US rating.
The base S trim already carries forward collision warning with AEB and pedestrian detection, lane-keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, a 360-degree surround camera, traffic sign recognition and Wade Sensing as standard — a genuinely broad list for an entry trim. But rear cross-traffic alert and adaptive cruise control are held back to the optional $1,275 Driver Assist Pack on S (standard from SE up), so the launch-year volume configuration is missing two core items rather than the full suite.
AEB with pedestrian detection is standard equipment on every 2020 trim per Land Rover's own materials, but with no IIHS or NHTSA front-crash-prevention test published for the launch year, there is no independent day/night instrumented result to support a higher score.
Blind-spot monitoring is standard across the whole 2020 range, but rear cross-traffic alert is gated to the optional Driver Assist Pack on the base S trim (standard only from SE up), and all of it is alert-only with no active braking intervention or trailer-aware mode. That split coverage sits in the middle band rather than the top.
Lane-keep assist is standard on every 2020 trim, but period coverage of the launch model describes a conventional corrective nudge rather than smooth lane-centering, and no standalone centering feature was offered in this debut year.
Adaptive cruise control is optional on the base S trim (bundled in the $1,275 Driver Assist Pack) and standard from SE up, so most retail configurations carry it, but there is no combined highway-assist package pairing it with lane centering in this launch year, and it remains an add-on on the cheapest trim.
No hands-free/eyes-off highway driving system existed on any 2020 Land Rover product; adaptive cruise control is the most advanced driver-assist feature offered and requires hands on the wheel.
No IIHS headlight test exists for the 2020 Defender's launch year, so this is scored on equipment tier alone: the base/volume trim carries simpler reflector-style Standard LED headlights, while the capable Matrix LED system with Adaptive Driving Beam sits above it as a non-interchangeable upgrade.
Forward sightlines and a tall seating position are genuine strengths in period reviews of the launch model, but the swing-gate-mounted full-size spare tire and thick rear roof structure create a real rear blind zone; the standard 360-degree surround camera mitigates but doesn't eliminate it, and the optional ClearSight digital rearview mirror is an upcharge rather than standard.
The four-door 110 (the volume configuration in this launch year — the three-door 90 was delayed to the 2021 model year by COVID-19 production disruption) has conventional rear-door access and two complete second-row LATCH anchor sets, making car-seat installation straightforward. The optional 5+2 third row has no LATCH hardware despite an owner's-manual error claiming otherwise, but that does not affect the real second-row anchors being scored here.
4Space & ComfortGrades below the middle of the scale.1.61D
All-new L663-generation Defender 110 launched for 2020 ships 5-passenger standard, with an optional front jump seat (6) or rear third row (7).
Tall, boxy roofline gives generous front headroom, near the top of the SUV band.
Front legroom is on the lower end of the SUV band despite the vehicle's size, a byproduct of the upright, truck-like cabin architecture.
Second-row headroom is excellent, benefiting from the tall, flat-roofed body.
Second-row legroom is competitive mid-pack for the segment.
The optional third row is a token perch for the 110: reviewers found grade-schoolers could barely fit, second-row occupants must slide forward to accommodate it, and it 'would never hold adults.' Most buyers are advised to skip it and use the space for cargo.
Cargo volume behind the second row is mid-pack among SUVs.
Maximum cargo volume with seats folded is solid for a mid-size luxury SUV.
The Defender 110's cabin has exposed structural crossbar storage, a deep center cubby, optional front jump seat that doubles as storage, underfloor stowage, and multiple 12V/USB outlets front and rear — distinctive but not class-leading.
Front seats with available 12-/14-way power adjustment and Windsor leather are praised as supportive and comfortable for long stints; rear seats are flatter and less bolstered.
Standard air suspension with adaptive dampers delivers a notably plush yet controlled ride over broken pavement, repeatedly singled out by reviewers as a highlight.
Reasonably refined for a body-on-frame-derived off-roader with off-road-biased tires, but not segment-leading; some wind noise around the boxy greenhouse and tire roar noted on the available all-terrain rubber.
Heated/ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and heated rear seats are available, plus independent rear climate control — but all are optional extras rather than standard equipment on the volume P300 trim.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Defender's weakest categories.0.00F
The all-new L663 Defender launched in the US for MY2020 as the 110 body only (the shorter 90 didn't arrive until 2021); the cheapest way in is the base 110 trim with the 2.0L P300 four, landing in the lower-middle of the $25,000–$65,000 SUV band.
With only the 110 body available in launch-year 2020, the SE grade paired with the 395-hp P400 inline-six was the characteristic volume configuration — enough off-road and luxury content to justify the step up from base/S without reaching First Edition/X money — landing in the upper-middle of the $27,000–$68,000 SUV band.
Land Rover sits near the bottom of every brand reliability/repair-cost table, and this being the Defender's launch year means there is no multi-year ownership track record yet to settle the wide gap between sources; landing at/above the $9,500 SUV band ceiling reflects the brand's weak ownership-cost reputation rather than one confirmed number.
Now about six years removed from its MY2020 launch, the Defender nameplate's current depreciation studies put 5-year retention in the low-50s percent — solid mid-band for a luxury SUV, helped by launch-year scarcity and collector interest in the first model year of the revived nameplate.
Standard Land Rover coverage across the lineup at launch — mid-band, matching Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Lexus and better than the 3-year mainstream norm.
Land Rover publishes no standalone extended powertrain coverage — the engine and driveline are covered only for the same 4 years / 50,000 miles as the rest of the car, which falls below the 5-year floor of the band.
No confirmed complimentary scheduled-maintenance program accompanied the 2020 Defender launch — Land Rover sold Prepaid Scheduled Maintenance and Prepaid Full Maintenance Plus Wear & Tear plans as separate purchases rather than bundling them in. What buyers did get included: 24-hour roadside assistance and emergency towing for the full 4-year warranty term, trip-interruption expense benefits, and a connected-services trial (5-year Remote App, 3-year Connected Navigation Pro, 1-year Online Pack data). That's a real but modest bundle — roadside-plus-connectivity rather than genuine included service visits.
$63,600 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (51% retained, or about $32,436) leaves about $31,164 in depreciation. Add the projected $11,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $42,664 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the Defender's weakest categories.0.83F
2020 is the first model year of the all-new L663 generation (redesigned from the ground up on a new monocoque platform), so there is no multi-year predicted-reliability track record to draw on, and Land Rover's recent history gives little reason for optimism.
Land Rover has been a consistent bottom-of-the-pack brand across both major dependability studies for several consecutive years spanning this model's launch window.
First-model-year redesigns typically draw several recalls, but one of this generation's launch-year campaigns is more than routine: a powertrain control module fault that could shut the engine off without warning while driving is a genuine safety concern, not a paperwork fix.
The volume-trim P300's 2.0L turbo-four Ingenium engine has a reasonably solid reputation among the Ingenium family (unlike the diesel variants, which are far more problem-prone) with some reports of the turbo working hard under this vehicle's weight, but it was new to the Defender nameplate in 2020 with no long-mileage track record yet in this application.
Reviewers consistently praised the durable soft-touch materials, standard leather-wrapped wheel, and leather/canvas seating as a good match for the price and the vehicle's rugged-luxury positioning, with only scattered complaints about harder plastic trim pieces in secondary areas.
Assembly on this all-new platform was generally solid in press reviews, but a meaningful share of early owners reported door-seal, infotainment, and air-conditioning glitches typical of a first-year redesign, holding this below the top tier.
Land Rover's US dealer footprint is adequate but noticeably thinner than mainstream or larger luxury brands, and recent J.D. Power dealership-experience scores for the brand sit at only an average level.
As a low-volume, dealer-dependent luxury off-roader on a brand-new platform in its first year, parts and specialized service are costly and not yet well supported by independent/aftermarket networks the way older Defenders are.
7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.80C-
A single 10-inch touchscreen is standard across the entire 2020 Defender lineup; no larger size is offered.
Pivi Pro's new flatter menu structure is simpler and quicker to learn than the outgoing InControl Touch Pro system, but launch-year reviewers repeatedly hit touch-responsiveness lag, needing to 'forcefully poke' the screen for it to register inputs.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included standard, but only via wired USB connection in the 2020 model year — wireless projection was not available at launch (added in later model years via software update).
Pivi Pro's native navigation and voice assistant are functional but reviewers found CarPlay 'worked about half the time' when they tried it and the native system 'didn't always play nice or find a route right away,' so most owners lean on phone projection instead.
A 6-speaker base system is standard with an upgraded 10-speaker Meridian Surround system and 14-speaker Meridian Signature system available on higher trims — adequate base sound with a genuinely strong premium option, typical of the segment.
A crisp, configurable 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster is standard across the entire 2020 Defender 110 lineup, including off-road-specific display modes.
Pivi Pro supports infotainment-level over-the-air updates via built-in 4G or external Wi-Fi, but owner forums report the launch-year software was buggy and that core vehicle/connectivity software still required a dealer visit to update in the US rather than a true whole-vehicle OTA.
The InControl Remote app covers core remote functions (remote start/climate pre-conditioning, lock/unlock, vehicle locate) and owners report it generally works well, though the broader InControl service suite is subscription-gated after an initial trial period.
Standard wireless phone charging pad plus front USB-A and USB-C ports, with additional rear-row USB and 12V power outlets and independent rear climate controls — solid, if not class-leading, provision.
Proximity keyless entry with push-button start is standard on the volume trim, and remote start is available via the InControl app; no phone-as-key feature was offered for the 2020 model year.
A 360-degree 3D Surround Camera system (1.7-megapixel cameras) is a signature feature, paired with an optional ClearSight digital rearview mirror that replaces the reflective mirror with a live camera feed — an unusually strong, off-road-oriented camera suite for the segment.
A head-up display is offered but only as an option, standard on the range-topping trim rather than on the volume P300 configuration.
8Use-Case FitOne of the Defender's strongest categories.1.91C-
Wide door openings and a tall, flat load floor make loading kids and gear straightforward in the standard 5-seat configuration, with second-row LATCH anchors; practicality drops if the optional token third row is specified since second-row occupants must slide forward.
AEB with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, lane keep assist and a surround-view camera are standard, but adaptive cruise control and rear cross-traffic alert are bundled into a $1,275 optional Driver Assist Pack rather than standard on family-friendly trims, and neither NHTSA nor IIHS crash-tested the 2020 model year.
Independent rear climate control, seat heaters available even for third-row occupants, and strong ride quality support multi-hour comfort for four occupants, though usable luggage space shrinks sharply if the third row is in use.
A commanding, upright seating position, good outward visibility, and the standout air suspension make low-speed and in-traffic driving relaxed, offset somewhat by the vehicle's large footprint in tight urban environments.
EPA-rated 17/20/18 MPG city/highway/combined on premium fuel is thirsty even among luxury SUVs, making per-mile commuting costs high.
A roughly 119-inch wheelbase and wide body make the 110 cumbersome in tight city parking, with an estimated ~41-42 ft turning diameter; the standard 360-degree camera system meaningfully offsets the size penalty.
A 3,500 kg (~8,200 lb) braked towing rating and strong payload/roof-load capacity give genuine work utility for an SUV, though it lacks a dedicated cargo bed or commercial trim variants sold in the US for 2020.
As an all-new first-model-year design, the 2020 Defender carries unproven durability and a documented run of early electrical, software, and sealing complaints from owners — the opposite of a fleet-proven reputation, despite Land Rover's rugged off-road heritage.
Factory-fitted roof rails rated for heavy static loads, configurable interior switch panels, and an accessory ecosystem give some jobsite/upfit flexibility, but the Defender is not marketed or optioned as a dedicated work vehicle in the US the way a pickup is.
Comfortable, well-cushioned seats and a composed air-suspension ride support long highway stints, but thirsty fuel economy (18 MPG combined) means more frequent fuel stops, and adaptive cruise is optional rather than standard.
Standard air suspension with selectable ride height, Terrain Response 2 off-road modes, a 900mm wading depth, 38°/28° approach/departure angles, and high static roof-load ratings make this a genuine, class-leading adventure and off-road vehicle.
Flat-folding rear seats, standard roof rails rated for expedition-style loads (roof tents, ladders), a deep 78.8 cu ft max cargo hold, and a wide factory/third-party accessory ecosystem give exceptional gear-hauling flexibility.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.90C-
Double-wishbone front/integral-link rear suspension with standard adaptive air suspension makes the Defender feel surprisingly agile and confidence-inspiring for its size and off-road tires, but reviewers note prominent body roll and tire squeal if cornered with any excess speed — secure but not athletic.
Electric power steering is accurate and well-weighted enough for a vehicle this size but delivers little genuine road feedback, typical of modern off-road-biased SUVs.
Brakes are adequate for the vehicle's roughly 5,000 lb curb weight with a reassuring if not sporty pedal feel; no instrumented stopping-distance test was found for the 2020 model year.
The 2.0L turbo-4 paired with the 8-speed ZF automatic shifts smoothly, though throttle response and refinement trail the optional mild-hybrid inline-6, which most reviewers prefer for its added smoothness.
The turbo-4 can sound coarse and strained under hard acceleration compared with the smoother inline-6 option, though it's inoffensive at a cruise.
The long-wheelbase 110's turning diameter sits at the large end of the SUV band, reflecting its size versus more compact crossovers.
A commanding, upright 'command' seating position, excellent forward and side visibility from the boxy greenhouse, and broad seat/wheel adjustability are consistently praised, aided by the exposed structural dash design.
Strong character, genuine off-road capability, and surprising on-road composure earned the 2020 Defender broad acclaim as a 'total crowd pleaser' that's enjoyable to drive both on pavement and off it, even if it isn't a canyon carver.
10Value & Market PositionThe Defender's best-graded category.2.71B-
Even the base 2020 Defender 110 (below the S) comes with full-time four-wheel drive, a two-speed transfer case with low range, a locking center differential, Terrain Response, and a 10-inch Pivi Pro touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto — a genuinely generous mechanical baseline for an entry price. The base trim is comparatively plain inside, though (steel wheels, simpler trim, basic seats), with heated/ventilated seats, adaptive cruise, the surround camera package and air suspension held back for S/SE and up.
On paper the case is strong: the Defender undercuts a Mercedes G-Class by tens of thousands while offering genuine low-range 4x4 hardware and, on the P400, a 395-hp inline-six — a real capability-per-dollar win in the Luxury Off-Road segment. But in the actual 2020 launch market that on-paper value was largely erased for real buyers — allocation was so constrained from day one that dealers in multiple markets added $10,000 to $20,000+ over MSRP, so content-for-price at sticker didn't translate into content-for-price at transaction.
Launch-year 2020 offers a single body (110 only — the short-wheelbase 90 didn't arrive until 2021) across six grades (base, S, SE, HSE, First Edition, X) and two engines (the P300 four and 395-hp P400 mild-hybrid six). A reasonable spread for a from-scratch launch, but narrower than the lineup becomes within a year or two — no second body style, no V8, no Octa, no 130, and the P400e plug-in hybrid had not yet reached the US.
The new Defender went on sale in the US in April 2020, into the teeth of COVID-19 production and dealership disruption, and still moved 9,100 units in its partial launch year — strong given both the shortened selling season and constrained early production. Demand ran well ahead of supply, with waitlists and allocation shortages at launch, a strong signal of acceptance even though the partial-year unit count itself is modest.
The relaunched Defender arrived to outsized critical and cultural acclaim — Top Gear's 2020 Car of the Year among the honors — and instantly became a style object with waitlists and dealer markups within months of launch, about as strong a desirability signal as a new nameplate can produce. The ceiling is Land Rover's long-standing reliability reputation, a known drag on brand perception that predates this specific model's own ownership record.
Scored on buyer benefit, and 2020 was about as bad as it gets: with a brand-new nameplate selling entirely on allocation and zero used-market supply to fall back on, dealers in multiple major markets added $10,000 to $20,000+ over MSRP rather than offering any incentive, and no factory cash or subvented financing applied.
2020 is the actual launch model year of the all-new L663 generation — a from-scratch D7x monocoque platform that made its global debut in September 2019 and reached US dealers in April 2020. It does not get any fresher than month one of a new generation, with no redesign risk whatsoever this early.
The new Defender swept major honors in its actual launch year: Top Gear's 2020 Car of the Year, and MotorTrend's "2021 SUV of the Year" (announced October 2020, judged against the then-shipping 2020-model-year Defender since the 2021 model year hadn't yet arrived) — on top of near-universal praise at launch for blending genuine off-road capability with on-road manners and design. Comparison tests of the era routinely placed it at or near the top of the luxury off-road set.
