The verdict

A struggling luxury off-road suv, strong on value and held back by efficiency.

The relaunched 2021 Defender pairs genuine go-anywhere hardware — full-time 4WD, a two-speed transfer case, Terrain Response 2, and an 8,201-lb max tow rating on the 110 — with a design-forward cabin that uses real metal and leather instead of convincing fakes. The tradeoffs are steep: 18 mpg combined on required premium fuel, zero NHTSA crash-test data at US launch, and a Land Rover reliability reputation that ranked dead last in J.D. Power's dependability study for the surrounding model years. It's a strong buy for a shopper who wants a style-setting, genuinely capable off-roader and is willing to budget for fuel and repairs; it's a tougher sell for anyone shopping on running costs or peace of mind.

8,201 lbs (110, properly equipped); 7,716 lbs (90)
100/100
#1 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Manufacturer-rated max tow for the 110 body style when properly equipped with factory towing package.

AWD/4WD availability94
#3 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Full-time AWD with a two-speed transfer case and low range is standard across every 2021 Defender trim, paired with Terrain Response 2 and (on higher trims) electronic locking differentials — among the most sophisticated 4WD systems in the segment.

Off-road capability90
#3 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Genuine off-road credibility: up to 11.5 in ground clearance with optional electronic air suspension, 38°/40° approach/departure angles, 35.4 in wading depth, and available locking center/rear differentials — among the most capable stock SUVs sold in the US.

Powertrain lineup breadth78
#3 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

2021 US lineup spans the P300 turbo-four, P400 mild-hybrid turbo/supercharged I6, and the newly added P400e plug-in hybrid — three distinct powertrains including an electrified option, though no pure EV.

2Efficiency & RangeThe Defender's lowest-graded category.0.00F
3SafetyGrades below the middle of the scale.1.22D
NHTSA overall rating
Not rated by NHTSA
0/100
#6 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA has not crash-tested the 2021 Land Rover Defender; low-volume imports are frequently skipped by the agency's testing program, and no overall/frontal/side rating has been published for this generation.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness45
#3 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

No IIHS award and no published crashworthiness subtest results exist to credit for the 2021 model year; the Euro NCAP result is suggestive of a strong structure but is a different test protocol and not a US rating.

Standard ADAS suite breadth73
#2 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Nearly the full ADAS suite — including blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, which rival vehicles often reserve for upper trims — is standard from the base/S trim; only adaptive cruise control is held back to HSE and above, keeping this out of the top band.

Automatic emergency braking performance58
#4 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

AEB with pedestrian detection is standard equipment per Land Rover's own materials, but with no IIHS or NHTSA front-crash-prevention test on record, there is no independent day/night instrumented verification to support a higher score.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage64
#4 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Standard across the whole trim range lifts it out of the bottom band, but period reviews describe conventional alert-only operation with no active steering/braking intervention and no trailer-aware mode.

Lane keeping & centering55
#2 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Standard lane-keep assist and lane-departure warning are present, but period road tests describe a conventional corrective nudge rather than smooth lane-centering, and no standalone centering feature was offered for 2021.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist62
#2 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers found the system smooth with appropriate speed corrections when equipped, but it is gated to HSE trim and above and is not bundled into a combined stop-and-go/lane-centering highway-assist package.

Hands-free driving availability15
#1 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

No hands-free/eyes-on highway driving system existed on any 2021 Land Rover product.

Headlight performance58
#3 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

No IIHS headlight test exists for this generation, so this is scored on equipment tier alone: a genuinely capable adaptive-beam Matrix LED system is available, but it sits above the base/volume trim's standard LED projector units.

Outward visibility53
#8 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Good forward sightlines and a tall seating position are offset by a genuine rear blind zone from the swing-gate-mounted spare tire and thick rear roof structure; the standard 360-degree camera mitigates but doesn't eliminate it.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability75
#2 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

The four-door 110 (volume configuration) has conventional rear doors and two complete second-row LATCH sets, making car-seat installation straightforward; a since-corrected owner's-manual error about non-existent third-row LATCH anchors (NHTSA recall 21V584000) does not affect the real second-row hardware being scored here.

4Space & ComfortGrades below the middle of the scale.1.20D
Seating capacity
5 standard (optional 6-seat front bench or 5+2 third-row jump seats, up to 7)
25/100
#3 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Volume-trim Defender 110 is a 5-seater; a front jump seat (6-seat) and a rear 2-seat third row (5+2, up to 7) are factory options that cannot be combined.

Front headroom
40.6 in (without panoramic roof)
72/100
#5 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Upright, boxy greenhouse gives generous front headroom typical of the body-on-chassis-styled unibody Defender.

Front legroom
39.0 in
0/100
#7 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Front legroom is mid-pack for the segment, in line with the Defender's upright seating position rather than a stretched-out driving stance.

Rear headroom
38.6 in
65/100
#7 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Tall, flat roofline carries through to the second row, giving rear-seat passengers excellent headroom for the class.

Rear legroom
36.6 in
55/100
#4 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Competitive second-row legroom for a mid-size-footprint luxury SUV, comfortable for adults on medium-length trips.

Third-row usability26
#4 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

The volume 5-seat 110 has no third row at all; the optional 5+2 jump-seat third row that some 110s carry is a cramped, child-only bench with poor access, not adult-usable.

Cargo/trunk volume
34 cu ft behind 2nd row (5-seat 110)
16/100
#6 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Solid behind-the-seats cargo space for the segment, though well short of larger-footprint full-size luxury SUVs.

Max cargo volume
78.8 cu ft with rear seats folded (5-seat 110)
53/100
#3 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Strong maximum cargo capacity with the second row folded flat, competitive with other mid-size luxury SUVs.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions78
#1 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Defender leans into expedition-style practicality: exposed structural members doubling as grab/tie points, a deep center console with an optional front refrigerator, rubberized washable surfaces, and abundant underfloor and door storage are standout touches versus rivals.

Seat comfort68
#4 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Front seats are widely described as comfortable and supportive with a commanding seating position; rear seats are roomy but firmer and less contoured on base cloth/leather trims.

Ride quality58
#3 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Ride is steady and well controlled, cushioned over broken pavement, but skews firm and the body-on-frame-like tuning transmits some highway expansion-joint harshness.

Cabin quietness66
#2 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Cabin stays appropriately hushed for a luxury SUV at cruising speed, though the boxy shape and large mirrors generate some wind noise versus more aerodynamic rivals.

Climate & comfort features56
#6 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Heated/ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and tri-zone climate control are available, but several of these sit on SE trim and above rather than standard on the volume S trim.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Defender's weakest categories.0.00F
Base MSRP
$47,450 (Defender 90 Standard, P300 I4, incl. $1,350 destination)
44/100
#4 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

The cheapest way into a 2021 Defender is the newly-added short-wheelbase 90 in base Standard trim with the 2.0L P300 four, landing in the lower-middle of the $25,000–$65,000 SUV band.

Volume-Trim Price
$64,050 as typically equipped (110 SE, P400 mild-hybrid I6, incl. $1,350 destination); range $51,850 (110 Standard) to $84,350 (110 X)
10/100
#6 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

US volume sits on the five-door 110 body, and the SE grade with the 395-hp P400 inline-six — rather than the base four-cylinder — was the characteristic early-Defender configuration, landing in the upper-middle of the $27,000–$68,000 SUV band.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$11,000 over 5 years (maintenance + repair, 110 P400); published estimates range from $5,765 (CarEdge, blended) to ~$10,200 in maintenance alone plus separately-estimated repairs (Edmunds TCO)
0/100
#6 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Land Rover sits near the bottom of every brand reliability/repair-cost table, and sources diverge sharply on the combined figure for a model with only one prior model year of repair history; landing at/above the $9,500 SUV band ceiling reflects the brand's weak ownership-cost record rather than a single confirmed number.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~49% of MSRP retained at 5 years
30/100
#7 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Now exactly five years removed from its 2021 model year, iSeeCars' depreciation study puts the Defender's 5-year loss at just under 51%, squarely mid-band for a luxury SUV — solid but not the standout residual the vehicle's launch-year hype might suggest.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
50/100
#1 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Standard Land Rover coverage across the lineup — mid-band, matching Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Lexus and better than the 3-year mainstream norm.

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (no separate powertrain term; covered within the basic warranty)
0/100
#2 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Land Rover publishes no standalone extended powertrain coverage — the engine and driveline are covered only for the same 4 years / 50,000 miles as the rest of the car, which falls below the 5-year floor of the band.

Complimentary maintenance & perks58
#4 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

New 2021 Defender buyers get complimentary scheduled maintenance for 3 years/36,000 miles (roughly five covered visits — fluids, filters, standard service items) plus roadside assistance running alongside the warranty term. That's a real but modest benefit — short of a multi-year, high-mileage included-service plan, and well short of Land Rover's own discontinued 5yr/60,000mi EliteCare bundle from the outgoing Defender/other model generations.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$43,666 (≈$32,666 depreciation + $11,000 maintenance)
17/100
#7 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

$64,050 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (49% retained, or about $31,385) leaves about $32,666 in depreciation. Add the projected $11,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $43,666 in total.

6Reliability & QualityOne of the Defender's weakest categories.0.86F
Predicted reliability32
#6 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

The all-new Defender had too little owner history in 2021 for a firm predicted-reliability signal, and the signal that existed was negative: widespread first-generation complaints about the Pivi Pro infotainment system and a PCM fault that could stall the engine at a stop.

Brand reliability track record22
#8 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Land Rover has been the most-complained-about brand in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study across the years bracketing this model, a multi-year pattern rather than a one-off result.

Recall & TSB history45
#4 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA logged seven recalls touching the 2021 model year, heavier than typical for a single model year, including one safety-relevant powertrain-control fault; none were mass-scale or structural/fire campaigns.

Powertrain durability reputation52
#6 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

The Ingenium turbo engine is paired with the widely respected ZF 8HP automatic, but the Ingenium family itself was new to the Defender platform in 2020 and had no decade-plus high-mileage track record by 2021, with sibling JLR models carrying a history of oil-consumption and timing-chain complaints.

Interior material quality83
#2 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers consistently single out the Defender's cabin for using authentic materials rather than convincing fakes, a rare distinction at this price point.

Fit & finish63
#6 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Initial assembly and panel fit were generally praised, but a first-generation platform produced scattered owner-reported rattles and an infotainment service bulletin, pulling the score down from the top band.

Dealer & service network47
#8 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Land Rover's US dealer footprint is a fraction of mainstream SUV brands', leaving some regions with long drives for service, and no comprehensive satisfaction survey specific to the network was found.

Parts availability & repair cost32
#7 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Specialized parts and labor keep routine and major repair costs well above mainstream-SUV norms, and the aftermarket for this new platform was still thin in 2021.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Defender's strongest categories.2.40C+
Touchscreen size
10 in Pivi Pro touchscreen (standard across the range)
35/100
#2 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

A single 10-inch Pivi Pro display is standard across the 2021 Defender 90/110 lineup; no larger screen was offered for this model year.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness76
#1 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Pivi Pro, debuting on Defender, was widely praised versus JLR's prior InControl Touch Pro system for its quicker boot/response, simpler menu logic, and dual-eSIM connectivity, though some physical controls were traded for touch functions.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto52
#4 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

The 2021 Defender launched with wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto standard; wireless projection arrived mid-cycle via a software-over-the-air (SOTA) update rather than being a day-one standard feature.

Voice control & native navigation62
#1 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Pivi Pro includes built-in navigation with dual-eSIM connectivity and online services, and a usable (if not class-leading) voice assistant; many owners still default to CarPlay/Android Auto navigation.

Audio system quality72
#3 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

A Meridian-branded sound system is available with a substantial speaker count and power upgrade over the base setup, giving strong premium-audio headroom typical of Land Rover's lineup.

Digital instrument cluster76
#2 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

A crisp, configurable 12.3-inch digital Interactive Driver Display is fitted across the 2021 Defender range alongside the Pivi Pro touchscreen, with no analog-gauge version offered.

OTA update capability78
#1 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

JLR's Software-Over-The-Air (SOTA) system on the 2021 Defender can update multiple vehicle modules — Pivi Pro, powertrain, chassis, and driver-assistance ECUs — not just infotainment/maps.

Companion app & remote functions58
#2 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

The InControl Remote app covers core functions (locate, fuel range, lock status) for free, but remote lock/unlock and remote climate pre-conditioning require the InControl Remote Premium subscription tier.

Charging ports & device power68
#1 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Front and rear USB-C ports plus a wireless charging pad are offered, giving solid everyday device-charging coverage, though not an exceptional abundance of ports across all rows.

Keyless & remote access56
#6 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Proximity keyless entry and push-button start are standard, but phone-as-key digital-key functionality was not yet offered on the Defender for the 2021 model year.

Camera & parking aids80
#1 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

A 3D surround-view camera system is fitted across the range with a 'transparent hood' off-road view, plus an optional ClearSight rear-view camera mirror — an unusually rich standard-camera suite for the segment.

Head-up display availability56
#1 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

A head-up display is offered as a roughly $970 option, but only starting on the SE trim and above — not available on the volume entry S trim.

8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.97C-
Kid & car-seat practicality58
#1 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Wide-opening doors and a roomy 5-seat cabin make everyday loading reasonably easy, but the tall step-in height and firm seat bases are less convenient for small children than a lower-slung crossover; LATCH anchors are present in the standard configuration.

Family safety package54
#4 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Standard autonomous emergency braking and lane-keeping assist are a reasonable baseline, but adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert are optional extras rather than standard on the volume trim, and the model hadn't yet been crash-tested by NHTSA/IIHS at US launch.

Family road-trip comfort64
#2 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Generous rear headroom and legroom plus an optional panoramic roof make the standard 5-seat cabin comfortable for multi-hour trips; the optional cramped 5+2 third row and modest rear-seat amenities keep it from the top tier.

Daily driving ease54
#4 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Low-speed manners are composed with a commanding driving position, but reviewers note the tall, narrow body feels top-heavy and ponderous in everyday cornering and lane changes compared with more car-like crossovers.

Commuting cost efficiency26
#5 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

EPA-rated 17/20/18 mpg city/highway/combined for the volume P300 110 is poor even by luxury-SUV standards, and the engine requires premium fuel, making per-mile commuting costs high.

Parking & maneuverability46
#8 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

The 110's full-size-adjacent footprint and wide turning circle make tight parking and U-turns a chore, though the standard 3D surround camera system meaningfully eases the experience versus a comparably sized SUV without it.

Work capability62
#2 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

8,201 lbs max towing (110) and over 1,700 lbs payload are strong numbers for a unibody luxury SUV, giving real headroom for trailers and gear, though it lacks a bed or commercial-vehicle cargo tie-down standardization.

Durability for work duty42
#8 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

This all-new unibody platform (replacing the old body-on-frame Defender) had no fleet track record by 2021 and drew early owner reports of electrical gremlins (DC/DC converter failures, spurious warning lights, windshield/lighting complaints to NHTSA) — not yet a proven hard-use vehicle despite the Defender name's heritage.

Jobsite & upfit practicality60
#3 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

A dedicated expedition-gear ecosystem (dynamically rated roof rack, side-mounted gear carrier, auxiliary switch pack, exposed tie-down points) gives real upfit flexibility, though it's oriented toward outdoor/expedition use rather than classic jobsite hauling.

Long-distance comfort & range66
#1 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Supportive front seats and a hushed cabin suit long highway stints, and driver-assist options help reduce fatigue, but thirsty real-world fuel economy means more frequent fuel stops than efficiency-focused rivals.

Outdoor & adventure capability92
#4 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Genuine off-road engineering — Terrain Response 2, available height-adjustable air suspension, 30.1° approach/37.6° departure angles, and 35.4 in wading depth — makes the Defender a standout adventure vehicle rather than a soft-roader in name only.

Gear & luggage flexibility80
#2 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

A dynamically rated roof rack, optional side-mounted gear carrier, exposed safari-style tie-down points, and nearly 79 cu ft of max cargo volume give exceptional flexibility for bulky outdoor gear.

9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.73C-
Handling & agility54
#3 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Handling is composed and secure on winding roads, but the tall, narrow body feels noticeably top-heavy and ponderous in corners compared with lower-slung luxury SUVs.

Steering feel60
#2 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Steering is fairly sharp and accurate for a tall off-roader, a pleasant surprise versus the old Defender's unassisted feel, though genuine road feedback is still modest.

Braking confidence60
#2 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

No major brake complaints surface in period testing or owner feedback, and pedal feel is described as unremarkable-but-adequate for the segment; no instrumented stopping-distance data was found for this model year.

Powertrain smoothness & response62
#5 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

The mild-hybrid 2.0-liter turbo-four P300 paired with the ZF 8-speed shifts smoothly in most conditions, with some turbo lag off the line reported by reviewers rather than best-in-class immediacy.

Drivetrain noise & vibration60
#4 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

The turbo-four is reasonably well isolated at cruise and becomes more vocal under hard acceleration, consistent with a hushed-but-not-silent cabin at highway speed.

Turning circle
~42.0 ft curb-to-curb (110 4-door; 90 2-door tighter at ~37-38 ft)
0/100
#7 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

The long-wheelbase 110 — the higher-volume US configuration — has a wide turning circle near the top of the SUV band, the tradeoff for its generous interior footprint.

Driving position & ergonomics70
#3 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

An upright, commanding seating position with good sightlines is a strength, and front seats offer solid adjustability, though some functions are buried in the Pivi Pro touchscreen rather than physical controls.

Fun-to-drive factor68
#5 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

While not a canyon-carver, the Defender's distinct character, go-anywhere capability, and surprisingly sharp steering give it genuine enthusiast appeal uncommon among luxury SUVs, in the same spirit as the Wrangler or 4Runner.

10Value & Market PositionThe Defender's best-graded category.2.83B-
Standard equipment generosity65
#4 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Every 2021 Defender, even the base 90/110 Standard, comes with full-time four-wheel drive, a two-speed transfer case with low range, a locking center differential, Terrain Response, and the 10-inch Pivi Pro touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and wireless device charging — a genuinely generous mechanical baseline for an entry price. Where it gives ground is the cabin and driver-assist ladder: heated/ventilated seats, adaptive cruise, the surround camera package and air suspension all sit behind options or higher grades on the S/SE trims, so a realistically equipped car costs meaningfully more than the base sticker.

Feature value per dollar62
#3 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

On paper the case is strong: the Defender undercuts a Mercedes G-Class by tens of thousands while offering genuine low-range 4x4 hardware and a 395-hp inline-six, a real capability-per-dollar win in the Luxury Off-Road segment. But in the actual 2021 market that on-paper value was largely erased for real buyers — allocation was so constrained that numerous dealers added $10,000–$30,000 market adjustments on top of MSRP, so the content-for-price case at sticker didn't translate into content-for-price at transaction.

Trim & configuration breadth78
#2 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

2021 meaningfully widens the range from the prior launch year: the short-wheelbase 90 joins the existing 110, spanning two body lengths and two- to six-seat-adjacent layouts, with two engines (the P300 four and the 395-hp P400 mild-hybrid six) and six grades per body from Standard through X. That's a good spread for a vehicle only in its second US model year, though still short of what the lineup later becomes — no V8, no Octa, no 130 long-wheelbase body, and the P400e plug-in hybrid had not yet reached the US.

Sales popularity & market acceptance86
#5 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

2021 was the Defender's breakout year in the US: sales more than doubled from 9,100 units in its partial 2020 launch year to 19,080 in 2021, making it Land Rover's best-selling nameplate, with roughly 29,000 orders still backlogged against constrained supply. That is a fast riser by any measure, even though absolute volume stays modest next to mass-market SUVs.

Brand desirability & image82
#5 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

The relaunched Defender arrived to outsized critical and cultural acclaim and instantly became a style object with waitlists and dealer markups — strong direct evidence of desirability. The ceiling here is Land Rover's long-standing reliability reputation, already a known drag on brand perception well before this specific model had time to build its own ownership track record.

Deals & incentive availability10
#7 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

Scored on buyer benefit, and 2021 was close to the worst a buyer could face: with demand far outstripping supply, numerous dealers added market adjustments of $10,000 to $30,000 over MSRP rather than offering any incentive, and no meaningful factory cash or subvented financing applied to a vehicle selling entirely on allocation.

Model freshness94
#2 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

2021 is only the second model year of the all-new L663 generation, which debuted for MY2020 on a from-scratch D7x monocoque platform — about as fresh as a vehicle gets — and the lineup is still actively expanding, with the short-wheelbase 90 body newly added for 2021 alongside the existing 110. No redesign risk exists this early in a generation.

Critical reception & awards90
#1 of 8 Off-Road SUVsCompare all →

The new Defender swept major honors right in this window — MotorTrend's 2021 SUV of the Year (Golden Calipers) and Women's World Car of the Year 2021 (Supreme Winner and Best Medium SUV) — on top of near-universal praise at launch for blending genuine off-road capability with on-road manners and design. Comparison tests of the era routinely placed it at or near the top of the luxury off-road set.
