The verdict

A struggling full-size luxury suv, strong on performance and held back by ownership.

The 2017 Range Rover pairs genuine off-road ability — a 7,716-lb tow rating, 35.4 in of wading depth, and a two-speed transfer case — with a plush, quiet cabin that still reads as one of the nicest interiors in the full-size luxury SUV class. The tradeoff is steep: J.D. Power rates its predicted reliability 2.5/5, neither NHTSA nor IIHS has ever crash-tested it, 19 MPG combined on premium fuel runs about $4,350/yr in gas, and CarEdge-style depreciation trackers put it at roughly 24% of MSRP retained after 5 years. This is a vehicle for buyers who want the Range Rover name and capability and are prepared to pay for both the fuel and the repair bills that come with it.

NHTSA overall rating
Not rated by NHTSA
0/100
#5 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA has never crash-tested the full-size Range Rover (L405, 2013-2022); no overall, frontal, side, or rollover rating exists for the 2017 model year or any year of this generation — low US sales volume keeps luxury nameplates like this off the agency's test slate.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness30
#6 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

IIHS has not crash-tested the full-size Range Rover in any category for the L405 generation and it holds no Top Safety Pick award. The closest independent data point is Euro NCAP, which awarded the L405 a 5-star rating at launch (91% adult, 84% child, 63% pedestrian, 86% safety assist) — a real but dated, non-US corroboration carried over from the 2013 launch testing rather than a 2017-specific result.

Standard ADAS suite breadth36
#5 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Standard on the 2017 HSE volume trim: Rear Park Distance Control, Cruise Control with Speed Limiter, Lane Departure Warning, and Autonomous Emergency Braking — 2017 is the model year Land Rover made AEB standard across the range. Blind Spot Monitor, Traffic Sign Recognition and Reverse Traffic Detection sit in the optional Drive Pack, while Adaptive Cruise Control, Blind Spot Assist and Lane Keep Assist require the pricier optional Drive Pro Pack — none of the active-intervention or rear-traffic features are standard on the volume configuration.

Automatic emergency braking performance30
#5 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The standard 2017 system is camera-based forward collision warning with AEB, while the stronger 'Intelligent Emergency Braking' is reserved for the optional Drive Pro Pack — so the typical volume-trim buyer gets the base-tier system, and no IIHS front crash prevention test exists to confirm day/night or pedestrian performance at either tier.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage30
#6 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Neither blind spot monitoring nor reverse/rear cross-traffic detection is standard for 2017 — both are bundled only in the optional Drive Pack ($410-class option), and the stronger Blind Spot Assist (active counter-steering) requires stepping up to the optional Drive Pro Pack. The volume-trim buyer gets only rear park distance sensors standard, with no blind-spot or cross-traffic warning out of the box.

Lane keeping & centering35
#4 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Lane Departure Warning (alert-only) is standard for 2017, but Lane Keep Assist — gentle corrective steering back into the lane — is gated to the optional Drive Pro Pack, so the typical volume-trim car on the road has warning without correction.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist40
#5 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Adaptive Cruise Control with Queue Assist is new for 2017 but only available via the optional Drive Pro Pack, not standard; this is the debut year of the feature on the Range Rover line, predating the Stop & Go/auto-resume refinement Land Rover introduced the following year.

Hands-free driving availability8
#4 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

No hands-free highway driving system (BlueCruise/Super Cruise/FSD-equivalent) was offered on the 2017 Range Rover at any trim or option level; the most advanced driver aid available is hands-on adaptive cruise with queue assist via the optional Drive Pro Pack.

Headlight performance38
#6 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2017 HSE volume trim runs standard HID xenon headlights with auto on/off; adaptive/curve-adaptive xenon headlights with automatic high beam are optional, bundled into the Vision Assist Package. This predates the 144-LED Pixel/laser headlight option Land Rover introduced for the 2018 facelift, so 2017 buyers are limited to xenon rather than LED technology at any tier, and IIHS has not published a headlight rating for this model.

Outward visibility72
#2 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers consistently credit the tall glasshouse, slim front pillars and commanding seating position for excellent forward and side sightlines, aided by a standard rearview camera and front/rear parking sensors; the 360-degree surround camera system that would fully offset the chunkier rear C-pillars is part of the optional Vision Assist Package rather than standard for 2017.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability58
#4 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Full LATCH lower-anchor-and-tether sets are fitted on both outboard second-row seats (center position gets a tether anchor only), and the wide rear bench offers generous room for car seats. Source commentary is mixed on ease of access — some describe the anchors as easily reached, others (for the shared-generation platform) note the lower anchors can be tough to get to — so a middle score reflects usable but not best-in-class ergonomics.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions60

Competitive but unremarkable storage: a reasonably sized console, door pockets, and underfloor cargo space, without a standout innovation like a giga-console or onboard household power.

Seat comfort86
#1 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

12-way power leather seats standard with 18-/20-way, heated/ventilated, and massaging seats available front and rear (Executive Class package); widely praised long-haul comfort.

Ride quality86
#1 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Adaptive air suspension delivers a plush, well-controlled ride over broken pavement that reviewers call a segment benchmark, with only minor sharp-edge intrusion on larger wheels.

Cabin quietness80
#2 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Acoustic glazing and extensive sound-deadening give a notably quiet highway cabin, consistent with owner and reviewer accounts.

Climate & comfort features75
#3 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Heated/ventilated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, 4-zone climate control and remote cabin preconditioning via the InControl Remote app are all available, though several of the richest items (massage, rear climate, Executive Class) are optional rather than standard on the volume HSE trim.

HSE with the 340-hp supercharged V6 is the representative volume configuration for the standard-wheelbase 2017 Range Rover; feeds the Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost rather than scoring standalone.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$6,591 est. 5-yr maintenance + repair (RepairPal/CarEdge industry estimate; annual ~$1,250)
45/100
#4 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

This is the generic aggregator figure for the nameplate rather than a 2017-specific breakdown (edmunds.com returns 403 to automated fetches); given the model's below-average predicted reliability and known air-suspension/electrical complexity, real-world owner costs likely run above this estimate, but no sourced higher figure was available to substitute.

#1 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Standard Land Rover New Vehicle Limited Warranty term in effect for the 2017 model year, prior to the later EliteCare 5-yr/60,000-mi extension that reached the Land Rover brand in subsequent years.

Powertrain warranty
4 years / 50,000 miles — runs concurrent with the basic warranty, no separate extended powertrain term
0/100
#5 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Unlike rivals that extend powertrain coverage well beyond the basic warranty (5-10 years is typical), Land Rover's powertrain coverage simply matches the 4-yr/50,000-mi bumper-to-bumper term.

Complimentary maintenance & perks55
#3 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

No complimentary scheduled maintenance is included for a Land Rover-brand 2017 model — that ownership-package benefit (EliteCare) was a Jaguar-brand program in this period and had not yet been extended to Land Rover. Standard coverage is limited to 4-yr/50,000-mi roadside assistance with trip-interruption benefits and a retailer mobile-technician dispatch program, landing this at basic-roadside-only rather than no coverage.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$76,634 (≈$70,043 depreciation + $6,591 maintenance)
0/100
#2 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

$92,650 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (24.4% retained, or about $22,607) leaves about $70,043 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,591 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $76,634 in total.

6Reliability & QualityGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.30F
Predicted reliability25
#5 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

J.D. Power rates the Range Rover's predicted reliability at 2.5/5, below the industry average of 3, and Consumer Reports does not publish a confident reliability verdict for this low-volume model; RepairPal's independent index separately scores the Range Rover 2.0/5.0 (15th of 19 full-size luxury SUVs), corroborating a below-average outlook rather than offsetting it.

Brand reliability track record20
#6 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Land Rover is a perennial bottom-finisher in J.D. Power's Initial Quality and Vehicle Dependability studies across this generation, and independent reliability indexes place the brand at or near the bottom of all manufacturers for this period.

Recall & TSB history35
#6 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2017 Range Rover carries a notably worse recall profile than later L405 model years: a serious, safety-critical campaign (NHTSA 24V840/25V514) covers 2014-2017 Range Rovers whose front suspension upper knuckle joint can crack and cause suspension-arm detachment and loss of control, on top of separate 2016-2017 driver's seat belt ELR, 2017 fuel-pump-bolt/fuel-leak, and 2017 electrical/instrument-cluster recalls — a pattern that includes genuine structural/safety risk, not just software or sensor issues.

Powertrain durability reputation26
#6 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2017 Range Rover's 3.0L supercharged V6 and 5.0L supercharged V8 share a well-documented timing chain/hydraulic tensioner wear problem producing cold-start rattle, commonly requiring a $4,000-7,000 timing chain guide service around 90,000-130,000 miles; the ZF 8-speed automatic is well-regarded but doesn't offset the engine-side risk, and this is a pre-facelift L405 model year with no powertrain changes to mitigate it.

Interior material quality85
#1 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Period reviewers consistently rank the 2017 Range Rover's cabin among the best in the segment: near-total soft-touch leather, carpet and padded-surface coverage, figured wood trim even on lower trims, and muted-aluminum switchgear, with Edmunds and contemporary road tests calling it one of the best interiors in its class.

Fit & finish62
#3 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Most period reviews describe tight, quiet, rattle-free assembly for the 2017 model year, but consumer reviews on Edmunds and Cars.com are split, with a recurring minority reporting rattles, trim creaks, or inconsistent panel gaps on individual examples — competitive but not class-leading consistency.

Dealer & service network50
#5 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Land Rover's US dealer network gives adequate but not dense coverage next to mainstream-luxury rivals, and J.D. Power customer service satisfaction scores the brand below the luxury-segment average; independent review aggregators skew heavily negative on dealer communication, appointment wait times and repair turnaround.

Parts availability & repair cost20
#6 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Land Rover repair bills run well above average (RepairPal: ~$1,174/year vs. a ~$652 industry average), driven by costly, often dealer-sourced parts for the air suspension, electronics and supercharged engine components; the 2013-2017 L405's air suspension in particular has a reputation for air compressor, height-sensor and air-spring failures well before 50,000 miles, each a $1,200-2,500-per-corner repair, compounding the ownership cost burden for this specific model year.

7Technology & InfotainmentGrades below the middle of the scale.1.43D
Touchscreen size

38/100
#3 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

InControl Touch Pro with a 10.2-inch touchscreen became standard across the Range Rover lineup for the 2017 model year, up from the previous 8-inch unit.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness62
#3 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The new Intel quad-core-powered Touch Pro system is a real step up in speed and tablet-style pinch/zoom usability over the previous system, but reviewers at the time still found the menu structure and occasional lag behind class leaders like Audi MMI.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto12
#4 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were not offered on any 2017 Range Rover — Jaguar Land Rover only announced CarPlay/Android Auto availability (via a Smartphone Pack) for the 2019 model year in October 2018, well after this model year.

Voice control & native navigation50
#4 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Touch Pro includes built-in satellite navigation with enhanced search, but the native voice-recognition system of this generation was widely considered stiff and command-specific rather than natural-language, pushing many owners to use phone projection workarounds once available.

Audio system quality76
#3 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A 12-speaker Meridian system is standard, with 18- and 28/29-speaker Meridian Signature systems available higher up the range — a strong, well-regarded audio lineup for the segment.

Digital instrument cluster55
#3 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A 12.3-inch configurable 'virtual' TFT instrument cluster was available, but it was an option on HSE and standard only on higher trims (Autobiography/SVAutobiography) rather than standard on the volume HSE trim, which used a smaller analog-plus-TFT message-center cluster.

OTA update capability55
#2 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

InControl Touch Pro could pull infotainment/software updates over WiFi, and Land Rover issued periodic software campaigns (e.g. August 2017) improving camera, Bluetooth, voice and navigation behavior — but this was infotainment-scope only, not whole-vehicle OTA (full-vehicle SOTA for JLR products came later).

Companion app & remote functions62
#2 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

InControl Remote offers remote start, lock/unlock, cabin preconditioning, vehicle locator and maintenance alerts via smartphone/Apple Watch — a solid feature set for the era, though the service required an ongoing subscription after an initial trial and owners reported occasional app reliability issues.

Charging ports & device power45
#5 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

USB and 12V power points are provided for front and rear occupants via the InControl Apps USB port, but wireless phone charging was not yet offered on the Range Rover in 2017 (it debuted on JLR products starting with the Velar the following year).

Keyless & remote access70
#4 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Proximity keyless entry with push-button start is standard on the HSE volume trim, with a power-operated/hands-free tailgate available as an option — solid but not segment-leading phone-as-key convenience for the era.

Camera & parking aids58
#4 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Rear camera and front/rear parking sensors are standard, but the 360-degree Surround Camera system is standard only on the range-topping Autobiography and remains optional on the HSE/Supercharged volume trims.

Head-up display availability55
#3 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A head-up display is available as an option but is not standard on the volume HSE trim.

8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.86C-
Kid & car-seat practicality58
#5 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Wide door openings and a flat rear floor help, but the tall ride height (up to 11.7 in ground clearance) makes lifting small children into car seats more effortful than in a lower-riding crossover; LATCH anchors are present and usable.

Family safety package48
#4 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

AEB and lane departure warning are standard for 2017, but neither NHTSA nor IIHS has ever crash-tested the full-size Range Rover (low sales volume), so there is no independent crash rating to point to, and stronger ADAS (adaptive cruise, blind spot, lane keep assist) requires the optional Drive Pro Pack rather than coming standard on the volume trim.

Family road-trip comfort76
#2 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Quiet cabin, plush air suspension ride, generous rear headroom/legroom, and available heated/ventilated/massaging rear seats plus rear climate make this a strong multi-hour family hauler, docked slightly for optional-only rear amenities on the base HSE trim.

Daily driving ease66
#3 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Smooth ZF 8-speed automatic, light well-weighted steering, and a commanding driving position make low-speed traffic driving relaxed, offset by the vehicle's large footprint and long-travel brake pedal some reviewers note in stop-and-go traffic.

Commuting cost efficiency26
#3 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

EPA-rated 17/23 mpg city/highway (supercharged V6) or 14/19 mpg (V8) on premium fuel, combined with Land Rover's above-average maintenance costs, puts commuting cost well below segment norms even against other full-size luxury SUVs.

Parking & maneuverability56
#1 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A relatively tight 40.4 ft turning circle and a commanding, upright seating position aid visibility, but the vehicle's size (78.1 in wide, nearly 197 in long) and only-optional surround camera on the volume trim work against easy city parking.

Work capability55
#5 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A 7,716 lb max tow rating is respectable for a unibody luxury SUV and gives real trailer-hauling capability, but there is no bed/cargo-box utility and the plush interior is not oriented toward hauling dirty gear.

Durability for work duty30
#6 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Land Rover/Range Rover carries a well-documented below-average reliability reputation (RepairPal rates the Range Rover 2 out of 5, with repair frequency well above the luxury-SUV average), making it a poor bet for sustained hard work use despite its mechanical capability.

Jobsite & upfit practicality25
#6 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

No onboard household power outlets, no notable tie-down/upfit ecosystem, and a leather-trimmed cabin that is not designed for washable, abuse-tolerant jobsite use.

Long-distance comfort & range76
#1 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Quiet, plush highway cruiser with comfortable seats and (on the V6) roughly 400+ mile tank range; adaptive cruise control and lane-keep assist are available via the Drive Pro Pack to ease fatigue on long trips, though not standard.

Outdoor & adventure capability90
#1 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Genuine off-road pedigree: second-generation Terrain Response with dedicated grass/gravel/snow/mud/sand/rock-crawl modes, full-time four-wheel drive with two-speed transfer case, height-adjustable air suspension giving up to 11.7 in ground clearance, and a class-leading 35.4 in wading depth.

Gear & luggage flexibility68
#4 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

71.7 cu ft of max cargo space with the rear seats folded and a tow hitch rating that supports trailers for toys give solid gear-hauling flexibility, though roof rails/crossbars are an added-cost option rather than standard.

9Driving ExperienceOne of the Range Rover's strongest categories.2.37C+
Handling & agility68
#2 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Independent suspension, adaptive air dampers and a variable-ratio electric power steering rack let the Range Rover corner flatter than its size and weight suggest, with surprisingly little understeer — but there is still noticeable body roll typical of a tall, heavy SUV, keeping it short of truly agile.

Steering feel72
#1 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The variable-ratio electric power steering is well-weighted and precise for a vehicle this size, giving confident on-center feel even if ultimate feedback is filtered compared to a sport-oriented SUV.

Braking confidence64
#2 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Large vented discs provide adequate stopping power for the Range Rover's considerable curb weight, but period reviews don't single out the brakes as a strength, suggesting solid rather than segment-leading performance.

Powertrain smoothness & response76
#3 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The supercharged V6/V8 engines pair with a ZF 8-speed automatic that shifts smoothly and unobtrusively, giving a refined, well-calibrated power delivery typical of Jaguar Land Rover's supercharged lineup of this era.

Drivetrain noise & vibration64
#6 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The supercharged V6 has an audible whine under hard acceleration that some reviewers find less refined than the smoother-sounding V8, though both stay well isolated from the cabin at a cruise.

#4 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Curb-to-curb turning diameter for the standard-wheelbase Range Rover.

Driving position & ergonomics83
#1 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The Range Rover's commanding, elevated seating position with excellent outward visibility and wide adjustability range is a long-standing hallmark of the nameplate and a genuine strength versus rivals.

Fun-to-drive factor56
#2 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The Range Rover prioritizes effortless, serene cruising over driver engagement — it's pleasant and confidence-inspiring but not a vehicle enthusiasts seek out for its own sake, especially next to sportier full-size luxury SUV rivals.

10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.82C-
Standard equipment generosity60
#4 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The base 2017 trim ($88,245) includes leather seating, adjustable air suspension, Terrain Response, a rearview camera and 19-inch wheels standard — competitive for the segment, though the new-for-2017 InControl Touch Pro 10.2-inch infotainment, panoramic roof and surround camera were reserved for higher trims/options rather than standard across the range.

Feature value per dollar45
#6 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Genuine off-road capability, air suspension and cabin luxury are real strengths, but a below-average predicted-reliability rating and premium pricing relative to the Escalade, X5/X7 and GLS erode the overall value proposition.

Trim & configuration breadth75
#1 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

2017 spans HSE, Supercharged, Autobiography and SVAutobiography (plus the new-for-2017 SVAutobiography Dynamic) across V6 supercharged, V8 supercharged and Td6 diesel powertrains, in both standard and long-wheelbase bodies, from roughly $86k to $200k.

Sales popularity & market acceptance55
#4 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

16,869 US units in 2017 is a steady mid-pack result for the full-size luxury SUV niche, ranked #7 of US News' Luxury Large SUV field for the model year — ahead of niche rivals but well behind the Escalade.

Brand desirability & image85
#3 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Range Rover remains one of the most aspirational nameplates in the luxury SUV world, with strong brand equity that persists despite well-documented reliability criticism.

Deals & incentive availability40
#6 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The flagship Range Rover was rarely discounted meaningfully off MSRP in this period, consistent with Land Rover's low-volume, built-to-order positioning for the nameplate; modest lease cash or financing offers existed but nothing resembling mainstream-brand incentive levels.

Model freshness50
#3 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The L405 generation dates to 2013. 2017 is a mid-cycle running-change year that introduced the InControl Touch Pro 10.2-inch infotainment system, new driver-assistance tech (Advanced Tow Assist, Intelligent Speed Limiter) and the new SVAutobiography Dynamic variant — a meaningful mid-cycle tech refresh, but the core body/platform is four years old with the bigger exterior facelift still a year away (MY2018).

Critical reception & awards55
#3 of 6 Full-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

MotorTrend rated the 2017 Range Rover 3.5/5.0, praising its off-road capability and pampering luxury; well-regarded generally but not typically the comparison-test winner against the Mercedes GLS, BMW X5/X7 or Escalade, and below-average predicted reliability was a recurring knock.
