The verdict
A struggling full-size luxury suv, strong on performance and held back by ownership.
The 2020 Range Rover trades on genuine off-road ability, a plush air-suspension ride, and one of the most aspirational badges in the full-size luxury SUV class — but it asks a buyer to accept real risk for that prestige. Consumer Reports' lowest-possible reliability score, a dead-last J.D. Power brand dependability ranking, and an estimated $88,868 five-year ownership cost (largely from depreciation that leaves only ~35% of value after five years) are the trade-off for a cabin and chassis that still feel special a decade into this generation's run. It's the right call for someone who wants the badge and the Terrain Response system and can absorb the maintenance bills; it's the wrong call for anyone who needs a worry-free daily driver.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Range Rover's best-graded category.2.67C+
2020 was the model year the base Range Rover switched from the supercharged V6 to the new Ingenium turbocharged inline-6 mild-hybrid (MHEV) engine; P360 is the volume/entry gas powertrain.
Peak torque of the P360 Ingenium I6 MHEV, the volume gas engine for 2020.
Manufacturer-quoted 0-60 for the base P360 inline-6 MHEV trim; faster-trim figures corroborated by multiple outlets but base figure carries slightly lower confidence due to some source disagreement on exact tenths.
The Ingenium turbo I6 MHEV is smooth and quiet at cruise with mild-hybrid assist smoothing stop-start, but reviewers note a noticeable lag between throttle input and power delivery under harder acceleration, keeping it out of the top tier for responsiveness.
The standard ZF 8-speed automatic shifts smoothly and responsively at speed with a usable Sport mode, but owner and review reports note occasional low-speed hunting/multiple shifts in quick succession that are noticeably less polished.
Manufacturer-rated maximum towing capacity, consistent across the 2020 Range Rover engine lineup.
Permanent 4-wheel drive is standard across the entire 2020 Range Rover trim range, paired with a two-speed transfer case (on most configurations), locking center differential, and multi-mode Terrain Response system — among the most sophisticated AWD/4WD systems in the segment.
Standard electronic air suspension raises ground clearance for off-road driving, with a 34.7°/29.6° approach/departure angle and a 35.4-inch wading depth — genuine off-road credentials for a full-size luxury SUV, short of a dedicated off-road trim's lockers/skid-plate package.
2020 offered five distinct engine states of tune across four architectures: two Ingenium inline-6 MHEV gas tunes (P360/P400), a Td6 turbodiesel, a P400e plug-in hybrid, and two supercharged V8 gas tunes (P525/P565) — one of the broadest powertrain spreads in the segment, including an electrified option.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the Range Rover's weakest categories.0.89F
EPA combined rating for the 2020 Range Rover P360 (3.0L turbo I6 mild-hybrid), the volume gas powertrain.
EPA city rating for the P360 MHEV, 4WD.
EPA highway rating for the P360 MHEV, 4WD.
EPA-published tank range for the P360 MHEV, derived from the 27.5-gallon fuel tank and 21 combined MPG rating.
EPA's standard annual fuel cost estimate for the P360 MHEV at 15,000 mi/yr on recommended premium fuel; high even for the full-size luxury SUV segment due to premium fuel pricing and 21 combined MPG.
EPA label lists premium gasoline as 'recommended' rather than strictly required for the P360, so regular can be used without voiding warranty but at some cost to the engine's rated output/efficiency — a middle-ground case.
3SafetyGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.97F
NHTSA has never crash-tested the full-size Range Rover (low US sales volume relative to NCAP's testing pool); no overall star rating exists for the 2020 model year or this generation (L405, 2013-2022).
IIHS has not tested the full-size Range Rover (L405 generation) in any crashworthiness category and it carries no Top Safety Pick award; multiple sources confirm it is simply untested rather than poorly rated, but the absence of any independent crash data on a flagship SUV is a real gap.
Standard on the 2020 volume trim: low-speed forward collision mitigation with automatic emergency braking, lane departure warning, a rearview camera, and front/rear parking sensors. Blind spot assist, high-speed emergency braking, 360-degree surround camera, adaptive cruise control and driver-condition monitor are bundled in the optional Driver Assist Pack rather than standard.
Low-speed autonomous emergency braking is standard, but the high-speed intelligent emergency braking and front pedestrian detection are only included in the optional Driver Assist Pack; no IIHS front-crash-prevention test exists to confirm day/night or pedestrian performance.
Blind spot assist and rear cross-traffic alert are available as part of the optional Driver Assist Pack across the trim range (not locked to only the top trim), but are alert-only with no active steering intervention, and are not standard equipment.
Lane departure warning is standard, but lane-keep assist with steering input and lane centering require the optional Driver Assist Pack's adaptive cruise w/steering assist system; no instrumented review of the full-size 2020 Range Rover's lane-centering smoothness was found.
Adaptive cruise control with steering assist and lane centering is available (Driver Assist Pack) and technically capable for 2020, combining stop-and-go ACC with hands-on highway assist, but no instrumented long-term test of the full-size Range Rover's specific tuning was found (a contemporaneous JLR-platform Evoque review noted abrupt braking/acceleration on the shared InControl stack).
No hands-free highway driving system (BlueCruise/Super Cruise/FSD-equivalent) existed in the Range Rover lineup for the 2020 model year — only hands-on adaptive cruise with steering assist was offered.
Standard Premium LED headlights (24 LEDs) on the volume trim, with Matrix LED (52 LEDs) and Pixel LED (142 LEDs) available on higher trims; US-spec units run Auto High Beam Assist rather than a fully enabled adaptive driving beam (not street-legal in the US at the time), and IIHS has not published a headlight rating for this model.
Reviewer consensus credits the Range Rover's tall glasshouse, slim front pillars and elevated command seating position with excellent forward/side sightlines; a 360-degree 3D surround camera system is standard, offsetting the one acknowledged weak spot — chunky rear C-pillars.
Two complete second-row LATCH connector sets are provided and the vehicle can accommodate up to three child seats across the second row, but the anchors sit low in the seat cushion and are reported as tough to access, and fitting a seat in the center position is a tight squeeze.
4Space & ComfortGrades below the middle of the scale.1.63D
The 2020 Range Rover (SWB or LWB) is a strict 2-row, 5-seat SUV; no 3-row option exists on this generation.
Unchanged interior packaging for the L405 facelift generation (2018-2021), confirmed directly on the 2020 model-year spec sheet.
The tall, upright 'command' driving position trades front legroom for seating height; figure sits below the SUV normalization band floor.
The tall roofline carried through this generation unchanged gives generous rear headroom for the full-size luxury SUV segment.
Standard-wheelbase figure for the volume HSE trim; the LWB adds roughly 7.5 in of rear legroom via a stretched platform.
No third row is offered on any 2020 Range Rover trim, SWB or LWB — a strict 2-row SUV in this generation (the 7-seat LWB option arrived only with the 2022 redesign).
Behind-seat cargo is modest for a full-size luxury SUV, a consequence of the sloping tailgate and bench-seat packaging carried through this generation.
Maximum cargo volume with the second row folded sits in the lower half of the full-size luxury SUV band.
A deep center console, door pockets and a flat load floor with the second row down cover everyday needs competently, but there is no standout storage innovation for 2020.
Heated leather front seats are standard and widely praised for long-haul support; HSE and above add massage, multi-way power adjustment, and heated/cooled rear seats.
The standard height-adjustable air suspension is repeatedly singled out as class-leading, absorbing road imperfections while keeping body motions in check.
Acoustic glazing and extensive sound insulation, paired with the new-for-2020 inline-six's inherent smoothness, make the cabin notably hushed at highway speed.
Tri-zone climate control and heated front seats are standard; heated rear seats, ventilated front/rear seats and 4-zone climate become available moving up the trim ladder.
5Cost of OwnershipThe Range Rover's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Entry SE trim pricing for the full-size Range Rover (gas inline-6 P360); shown for reference only.
HSE with the 395-hp P400 inline-6 mild-hybrid gas engine is listed as the most popular 2020 configuration; feeds the Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost rather than scoring standalone.
No Edmunds TCO breakout exists for the I6 P400 HSE specifically; estimated modestly below the V8 P525 figure given the smaller, simpler engine on an otherwise shared platform/electronics. Reliability is a known weak point for this generation.
Estimates vary by source and trim (26-42% quoted), but converge on the Range Rover being among the weakest resale performers in the full-size luxury SUV class.
Standard Land Rover New Vehicle Limited Warranty term for the 2020 model year.
Unlike rivals that extend powertrain coverage well beyond the basic warranty (5-10 years is typical), Land Rover's powertrain coverage simply matches the 4-yr/50,000-mi bumper-to-bumper term.
No complimentary scheduled maintenance is included — Land Rover sells a separate Prepaid Scheduled Maintenance Plan — but 4-year/50,000-mile roadside assistance with trip-interruption benefits and a retailer mobile-technician dispatch program is standard, landing this at basic-roadside-only rather than no coverage.
$95,950 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (35% retained, or about $33,583) leaves about $62,368 in depreciation. Add the projected $26,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $88,868 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the Range Rover's weakest categories.0.60F
Consumer Reports gave the 2020 Range Rover its lowest possible predicted reliability score (1/5), driven by chronic complaints in the electrical, climate, in-car electronics, and air suspension categories for the L405 generation.
Land Rover placed last among all brands in J.D. Power's 2021 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (covering 2018 model-year vehicles, which includes this generation's build era), and was also bottom-tier in initial-quality studies through this period.
The 2020 model year carries a handful of recalls (high-beam malfunction affecting ~26,800 vehicles, a later surround-camera water-ingress campaign spanning 2018-2022 models, and a PHEV pedestrian-warning-sound campaign) — none involving fire, brakes, or structural failure, but enough volume and variety to sit at typical rather than clean.
The 2020 lineup's supercharged V6/V8 and four-cylinder Ingenium engines (plus the P400e PHEV) have a well-documented history of turbocharger, timing-chain, and oil-consumption complaints in JLR products of this era; the ZF 8-speed automatic itself is well-regarded, but owner forums and repair shops consistently flag the engine/accessory side as the weak link.
Reviewers consistently rate the 2020 Range Rover's cabin as class-leading: thick leather, real wood and metal trim, and near-total surface coverage in soft materials, with an understated, high-society ambiance that rivals costlier flagships.
Press first-drive impressions of panel gaps and showroom assembly are positive, but that is undercut by a well-documented gap to owner experience: Land Rover's initial-quality and long-term dependability studies through this generation report frequent electrical glitches, infotainment faults, and rattles that don't show up in a dealer-floor inspection.
Land Rover's US dealer network is reasonably dense for a low-volume luxury import (roughly 130 dealers nationally) but service-satisfaction scores for the brand have lagged other luxury marques through this period, landing this item in the adequate-but-mixed band.
Range Rover parts and labor are notably expensive and dealer-centric — a routine oil change runs over $500 and the 60,000-mile service $1,400-2,000, with specialized suspension and electronics repairs running into the thousands — and RepairPal-style sources put a Range Rover near the bottom of its segment on overall repair-cost ranking.
7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.87C-
The 2020 Range Rover uses the InControl Touch Pro Duo system introduced with the 2018 facelift: two 10-inch screens stacked in the center stack (the single-screen Pivi Pro system did not arrive until the 2022 redesign).
Touch Pro Duo's dual-screen layout is distinctive but was widely criticized for laggy menus and a steep learning curve versus single-screen rivals.
A Smartphone Pack bundling Apple CarPlay and Android Auto was standard/available on 2019-2020 Touch Pro Duo vehicles, but the connection was wired via USB — wireless projection had not yet rolled out to this model for MY2020.
Built-in navigation on the upper Touch Pro Duo screen is functional, but the native voice assistant of this generation was dated and most owners defaulted to phone projection for voice commands.
A Meridian sound system is standard, with an available flagship 1,600-watt 29-speaker Meridian Signature 3D Surround system on upper trims — a genuine premium-audio strength for this model.
A configurable 12.3-inch Interactive Driver Display is standard across the 2020 lineup, offering a crisp fully-digital gauge cluster.
Land Rover's Software Over The Air (SOTA) capability, rolled out across the lineup for this generation, covers infotainment, apps and select electronic-module updates, but whole-vehicle feature-adding OTA on the scale of segment leaders was not yet in place.
The Land Rover InControl Remote app covers core functions (locate, status, remote lock, pre-conditioning) but richer features sit behind the InControl Remote Premium subscription rather than being bundled free.
USB-A ports in front and rear rows plus a household-style power outlet are typical of this generation; USB-C and widespread wireless charging were not yet standard fitment for 2020, with wireless charging limited to higher trims.
Keyless proximity entry, push-button start, and a hands-free powered tailgate are standard, giving full keyless convenience on the volume trim.
A 360-degree surround camera and front/rear parking sensors are available from HSE trim up, with a rear camera and sensors standard on base trims — solid but not standard across the whole range.
A head-up display is offered as an available option rather than standard equipment on the volume trim.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.74C-
Wide rear door openings and standard LATCH anchors make car-seat installation straightforward, but the tall step-in height (partly offset by an air-suspension access mode) and modest behind-seat cargo (31.8 cu ft) are compromises versus family-first rivals.
Forward collision warning, autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist and blind-spot monitoring are available for 2020, but several driver-assist features are optional rather than standard on the base trim, and neither NHTSA nor IIHS has published a crash rating for this generation.
Class-leading ride quality, a quiet cabin, and comfortable rear seating make multi-hour trips with a full family easy, even if outright cargo room trails some 3-row rivals.
A commanding, elevated seating position and smooth air suspension make low-speed driving relaxed, though the vehicle's size and weight add some effort in tight traffic.
The new-for-2020 I6 MHEV returns 21 MPG combined on required premium fuel, plus luxury-tier maintenance and tire costs — a modest improvement over the outgoing V6 but still among the more expensive vehicles to commute in, even within the luxury SUV class.
A roughly 40.5-foot turning diameter and full-size footprint make this a handful in tight urban parking despite the help of available surround-view cameras.
Towing capacity of up to 7,716 lbs on the gas I6 engines is respectable for occasional trailer/boat duty, but there is no bed or dedicated cargo-area work features, and this is not positioned as a work vehicle.
Land Rover carries a below-average reliability reputation in owner and reliability-survey data, and the vehicle is luxury-oriented rather than built or marketed for fleet/work abuse; the all-new 2020 I6 engine adds first-year-of-production uncertainty.
No onboard power outlets for tools, no upfit/rack ecosystem, and a leather-trimmed cabin that is not designed for jobsite wear.
Exceptional ride quality, a quiet cabin, comfortable seats, and available adaptive cruise/lane-centering ADAS make this a strong long-haul tourer.
Terrain Response 2, height-adjustable air suspension for extra ground clearance, standard AWD, and a deep wading capability give this a genuine off-pavement/adventure pedigree rare in the luxury SUV class.
A flat-folding second row, available roof rails, and a tow hitch cover most gear-hauling needs, though outright cargo volume is modest for the segment (31.8/68.6 cu ft).

The standard air suspension and active roll control keep the big SUV composed and secure through corners, but body lean and its ~5,000+ lb mass mean handling is reassuring rather than engaging.
Steering is accurate and well-weighted for a vehicle this size but is tuned for effortless cruising rather than feedback.
Brakes are adequate to haul down a ~5,000 lb SUV with a confident pedal, though stopping distances are unremarkable for the class given the vehicle's mass.
The all-new-for-2020 Ingenium turbocharged inline-six with 48V mild-hybrid assist, paired with the ZF 8-speed automatic, is smooth and well-calibrated, with the MHEV system smoothing stop/start and low-speed response — JLR cites a 20% efficiency gain over the outgoing supercharged V6 it replaced.
The new inline-six is notably quiet and vibration-free under load, matching the cabin's overall hushed character.
Turning diameter published directly on the 2020 model-year spec sheet for the standard-wheelbase volume trim.
The commanding, elevated seating position and excellent outward visibility are a Range Rover hallmark, with a wide seat/wheel adjustment range; the dual-screen Touch Pro Duo layout adds some control complexity versus simpler setups.
This generation prioritizes comfort and capability over driver engagement; the new I6 adds performance and refinement, but it remains pleasant and capable rather than something enthusiasts seek out for its road-driving character.

The SE base trim ($90,900) includes leather seating, a panoramic roof, 10-inch touchscreen, air suspension and 20-inch wheels standard — competitive for the segment, though rivals like the Escalade and X7 bundle more driver-assist and infotainment tech at similar or lower prices.
Genuine off-road capability, air suspension and cabin luxury are real strengths, but heavy depreciation, below-average reliability, and a criticized infotainment system erode overall value against Escalade/Navigator/X7 rivals at similar price points.
Ten 2020 configurations span SE/HSE/Westminster/Autobiography/SVAutobiography across I6 (P360/P400), V8 (P525/P565) and PHEV (P400e) powertrains, plus standard and long-wheelbase bodies, from $90,900 to $209,500.
13,982 US units in 2020 is a steady mid-pack result for the full-size luxury SUV niche — comparable to the Infiniti QX80 but well behind the Escalade and Navigator.
Range Rover remains one of the most aspirational nameplates in the luxury SUV world, with strong brand equity that persists despite well-documented reliability criticism.
Dealers report little willingness to discount the full-size Range Rover off MSRP, even on ordered-to-spec units; occasional modest lease cash exists but nothing approaching mainstream-brand incentive levels.
The L405 generation dates to 2013 with a 2018 mid-cycle facelift. 2020 brought an all-new mild-hybrid inline-six engine family (P360/P400) replacing the old V6/V8-only lineup, a meaningful mechanical refresh, but the platform is in the final stretch of its cycle with the all-new L460 generation launching for MY2022.
Reviewers consistently praised ride comfort, off-road capability and cabin ambiance, but dinged the slow, confusing touchscreen and middling reliability — well-regarded overall without being a frequent comparison-test winner against the Escalade/X7/GLS.
