The verdict

A struggling subcompact luxury suv, strong on value and held back by performance.

The 2020 GLB is the most practical small Mercedes. Its boxy body holds 62 cu ft of cargo with the seats folded, the second row is genuinely roomy, and it is the only subcompact luxury SUV with an optional third row. As a launch-year car it carries 20 NHTSA recall campaigns, a thin standard-equipment list, premium-fuel running costs of about $3,100 a year, and no crash-test results from NHTSA or IIHS for 2020. On the used market it suits a buyer who wants space and the three-pointed star, as long as they check the recall history and the options list on the specific car.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainThe GLB's lowest-graded category.0.64F
Horsepower
221 hp (GLB 250, only US powertrain for 2020)
18/100
#6 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

2020 is the launch model year of the first-generation X247 GLB. In the US the only version is the GLB 250, with the M260 2.0L turbo I4 at 221 hp; the AMG GLB 35 did not arrive until 2021.

Torque
258 lb-ft @ 1,800–4,000 rpm
35/100
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2.0L turbo makes 258 lb-ft across a broad plateau, competitive for the subcompact luxury class.

0–60 mph time
6.9 s (GLB 250, mfr claim)
43/100
#5 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Mercedes quotes 6.9 s from 0–60 for the GLB 250, mid-pack for the class. There is no quicker AMG variant for 2020.

Powertrain refinement62
#3 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The turbo four is quiet at a cruise and has a broad torque plateau. Without the 48V starter-generator that arrived for 2024, stop-start restarts are noticeable, and reviewers found the engine coarse when worked hard and slightly laggy off the line.

Transmission behavior58
#4 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 8-speed dual-clutch shifts quickly at speed but is jerky and hesitant in low-speed stop-and-go traffic, a recurring complaint about Mercedes' MFA2 models.

Max towing capacity
Up to 3,500 lbs with trailer hitch (unverified US rating)
36/100
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A hitch-equipped X247 GLB 250 is commonly cited at 3,500 lbs braked, but Mercedes-Benz USA does not prominently publish a US tow rating. Some listings quote only the 750 kg (1,654 lb) unbraked figure.

AWD/4WD availability66
#4 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

4MATIC AWD is an option on the single GLB 250 trim, and FWD is standard. The system biases torque by drive mode but has no low range or advanced terrain hardware.

Off-road capability42
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A road-focused crossover with about 7.9 in of maximum ground clearance and modest approach/departure angles. The optional Off-Road Engineering package on 4MATIC models adds an off-road drive mode and downhill speed regulation, but there are no lockers and no off-road trim.

Powertrain lineup breadth22
#5 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

For 2020 the US GLB has a single powertrain, the 221-hp 2.0L turbo GLB 250, offered with FWD or AWD. There is no AMG GLB 35 (it arrived for 2021), no hybrid, and no EV.

2Efficiency & RangeOne of the GLB's weakest categories.1.00D
3SafetyOne of the GLB's strongest categories.2.28C
NHTSA overall rating
Not rated for 2020 (launch year); 5★ overall on the same X247 GLB 4MATIC from 2021
100/100
#1 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA lists the 2020 GLB 4MATIC and FWD as vehicles but did not test them in this launch year. The 2021 GLB 4MATIC, the same first-generation X247 car with no structural change, earned 5 stars overall (frontal 4, side 5, rollover 4) and is carried here as the latest tested year of this generation.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness45
#5 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

IIHS never crash-tested the first-generation GLB, so the 2020 model has no award and no small-overlap, moderate-overlap or side results. It sits at the top of the untested band because the shared MFA2 structure earned 5 stars from Euro NCAP.

Standard ADAS suite breadth52
#3 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2020 GLB 250 comes standard with Active Brake Assist (AEB with pedestrian detection) and Attention Assist. Blind Spot Assist is in the optional Premium Package, and adaptive cruise and lane keeping/centering are in the optional Driver Assistance Package. NHTSA lists lane departure warning as not standard, so the standard suite is thin for a luxury SUV.

Automatic emergency braking performance62
#3 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

IIHS has not evaluated the GLB's front crash prevention. Active Brake Assist covers vehicles and pedestrians and did well in Euro NCAP AEB testing on the shared platform, but with no US day/night pedestrian result it cannot reach the top band.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage55
#4 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

For 2020, Blind Spot Assist with exit warning is not standard; it comes in the optional Premium Package. Active Blind Spot Assist with braking intervention and the cross-traffic functions require the Driver Assistance Package. The equipment is widely available but optional on the volume trim.

Lane keeping & centering58
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

When optioned, Active Steering Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist provide smooth, well-regarded lane centering. A volume GLB 250 without the Driver Assistance Package has no lane departure warning at all.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist72
#1 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is a refined full-speed stop-and-go system that works with Active Steering Assist and adapts speed to the route. It stays out of the top band because it is optional on the volume trim.

Hands-free driving availability20
#1 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2020 GLB has no hands-free driving option. The Driver Assistance Package is a hands-on Level 2 system.

Headlight performance58
#1 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2020 GLB has standard LED headlights, with Adaptive Highbeam Assist and Multibeam LED optional. IIHS has never rated the GLB's headlights, so how well they actually perform is unverified.

Outward visibility78
#1 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The GLB's boxy, upright greenhouse, tall side glass and near-vertical tailgate give clearly better sightlines than the sloping GLA. A rearview camera is standard and a 360-degree camera is optional.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability74
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The wheelbase is 3.9 in longer than the GLA's, and with a sliding second row and tall, square rear doors, rear-facing seats fit more easily than in most subcompact luxury rivals. Three-across is tight, and IIHS has not rated the GLB's LATCH hardware.

4Space & ComfortOne of the GLB's weakest categories.1.23D
Seating capacity
5 standard; 7 with the optional third-row seat
25/100
#1 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The volume 2020 GLB 250 seats five. An optional two-place third row makes the GLB the only 7-seat choice in the subcompact luxury class. 2020 is the launch model year of the first-generation X247.

Front headroom
40.7 in
74/100
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The tall, boxy X247 body gives generous front headroom. The figure is the published X247 GLB 250 dimension, and the body did not change between MY2020 and MY2023.

Front legroom
41.1 in
24/100
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Front legroom is adequate but on the short side for an SUV.

Rear headroom
39.3 in (second row)
82/100
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The upright roof runs well rearward, giving second-row headroom that beats most subcompact luxury rivals.

Rear legroom
38.1 in (second row, sliding and reclining bench)
68/100
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A wheelbase 10 cm longer than the GLA's and a sliding second row give roomy rear legroom for the class.

Third-row usability46
#1 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The optional third row is for a couple of small passengers on short trips. About 29 in of legroom and roughly 5 cu ft of cargo space behind it make it token seating for adults, though no class rival offers a third row at all.

Cargo/trunk volume
22.0 cu ft behind 2nd row (5-seat); ~5 cu ft behind optional 3rd row
0/100
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 5-seat GLB has 22 cu ft behind the second row in a usefully square hold, mid-pack for the class.

Max cargo volume
62.0 cu ft (5-seat, rear seats folded)
16/100
#1 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

62.0 cu ft with the seats folded is among the largest in the subcompact luxury class, ahead of the BMW X1.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions57
#3 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A sliding, reclining 40/20/40 second row and a flat-loading hold make it versatile. The console carries the MBUX touchpad, which eats space, door and bin storage is ordinary, and there is no 115V outlet (it was added to the Premium Package only for 2022).

Seat comfort68
#3 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The front and second-row seats are supportive on longer drives, though some find them tight, and the third row is cramped. Heated seats cost extra on the 2020 GLB 250.

Ride quality65
#1 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The ride is smooth and composed on the highway, but sharp impacts come through on the larger optional wheels, and adaptive damping is optional. Consumer Reports criticized the firm ride on the 2020 car.

Cabin quietness62
#3 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

It is quiet at a steady cruise, but the upright body lets in more wind noise than expected for a luxury vehicle (worse with a roof box), and the 2.0T is coarse when worked. With no 48V starter-generator, stop-start restarts are noticeable.

Climate & comfort features57
#3 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Dual-zone climate and rear vents are standard. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel are extra-cost options on the 2020 GLB 250, and ventilated seats are not offered on the volume trim.

5Cost of OwnershipGrades below the middle of the scale.1.28D
Base MSRP
$37,595 (GLB 250 FWD, $36,600 + $995 destination)
69/100
#6 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The cheapest 2020 GLB is the front-drive GLB 250 at $36,600 before destination, or $37,595 with the $995 destination charge. 2020 was the X247 generation's launch year.

Volume-Trim Price
~$41,500 (GLB 250 4MATIC with Premium package; $39,595 before options)
65/100
#4 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Most GLBs sold are the GLB 250 4MATIC: $38,600 plus $995 destination, or $39,595. A typical dealer build adds the roughly $2,000 Premium package, which puts it near $41,500. Heavily optioned press cars reached about $57,500.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$8,000 over 5 yr (estimates range ~$4,600–$12,000)
23/100
#6 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2020 GLB uses the M260 2.0T, an 8-speed dual-clutch and the A/B service schedule shared by all pre-facelift (2020–2023) cars. At Mercedes dealer labor rates, 5-year maintenance plus repairs comes to about $8,000. Estimates vary widely by source.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~50% retained after 5 yr (KBB ~$19,000 resale on a $39,595 GLB 250 4MATIC at ~6 yr)
33/100
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

KBB's 2026 resale value for a 2020 GLB 250 4MATIC is about $19,000, roughly 48% of its $39,595 delivered price after about six years. That implies about 50% retained at five years, mid-to-low for a luxury compact SUV.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
50/100
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz USA's new-vehicle limited warranty runs 4 years or 50,000 miles. That is typical for luxury brands and short of Genesis or Lincoln coverage.

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (no separate longer powertrain term)
0/100
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Mercedes offers no extended powertrain term. The engine and transmission are covered only by the 4-year / 50,000-mile basic warranty, the bottom of the band.

Complimentary maintenance & perks45
#5 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Roadside assistance for the warranty period and a Mercedes me connect trial are included. No scheduled maintenance is free: services are paid one at a time or bought through Prepaid Maintenance. That is weaker than BMW Ultimate Care (3 yr/36k) and Volvo's included maintenance.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$28,750 (≈$20,750 depreciation + $8,000 maintenance)
55/100
#4 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

$41,500 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (50% retained, or about $20,750) leaves about $20,750 in depreciation. Add the projected $8,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $28,750 in total.

6Reliability & QualityGrades below the middle of the scale.1.61D
Predicted reliability44
#5 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

2020 was the GLB's launch model year, and the signals for it are weaker than for the 2021 car. Consumer Reports published no overall reliability rating for the year, aggregated owner-complaint data rates it 'Mixed', and the very heavy first-year recall load points to below-average dependability.

Brand reliability track record58
#3 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz sits in the lower third of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings year after year. In J.D. Power's dependability studies it trails the premium leaders: Lexus, Porsche and Cadillac.

Recall & TSB history35
#7 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Twenty NHTSA campaigns cover the 2020 GLB, a very heavy load even by launch-year standards. Several are serious: water entering through the wheel well could damage electrical components and stall the engine, airbag faults (passenger inflator attachment, curtain airbags, A-pillar window airbag, airbag control unit software) could impair crash protection, and the front axle carrier can corrode. Most of the rest are small-batch assembly errors or fleet-wide MBUX/eCall software fixes.

Powertrain durability reputation58
#4 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The GLB 250 4MATIC pairs the M260 2.0L turbo four with the 8G-DCT dual-clutch, an MFA2 combination with no widespread failures on record. A fuel-rail/injector contamination campaign touches the 2020 car, though only a small batch, and the pairing was brand new in 2020, so it sits low in the mid band.

Interior material quality75
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The launch cabin has the twin-screen widescreen cockpit and turbine vents, and it reads clearly above mainstream compacts. Reviewers note hard plastics low in the cabin and less polish than the GLC, so it is competitive rather than class-leading.

Fit & finish55
#6 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The first year of production at the COMPAS plant in Mexico produced a string of assembly-quality recalls: wheel-well sealing that let water into the footwells, poorly welded rear spoilers, a misaligned second-row seat track, and wheel-arch covers and tailgate spoilers that could detach. These are signs of inconsistent build quality beyond the 2021 car's.

Dealer & service network78
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz has a dense US network of roughly 380+ dealers, with strong metro coverage and luxury amenities such as loaners. Its service satisfaction is respectable but trails Lexus and Cadillac.

Parts availability & repair cost56
#4 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Parts are readily available through dealers, and the MFA2 platform shares components with the A-Class, CLA and GLA. Mercedes OEM parts and labor rates are still among the highest in the segment.

7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.88C-
Touchscreen size
7 in standard (GLB 250); 10.25 in widescreen pair optional
0/100
#7 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2020 GLB 250 comes standard with a pair of 7-in MBUX displays, and touchscreen operation and navigation were options this year, becoming standard for 2021. The 10.25-in widescreen pair was a package option, and there was no AMG GLB 35 for 2020.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness64
#3 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

First-generation MBUX is quick with sharp graphics and offers a console touchpad, steering-wheel touch controls, voice and physical climate controls. The many overlapping inputs make it fussy, and a base car with the 7-in screen and no touchscreen or navigation feels underpowered for the brand.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto55
#5 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto work with both the 7-in and 10.25-in setups but are wired on the 2020 GLB. Wireless projection arrived only with the MY2024 facelift.

Voice control & native navigation64
#1 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The natural-language 'Hey Mercedes' assistant is standard and capable. Built-in navigation was optional for 2020, through the $1,150 Multimedia Package with AR guidance, so the volume car often relies on phone projection.

Audio system quality66
#5 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The standard audio is adequate, and the optional 12-speaker, 590-watt Burmester system is a strong upgrade. Satellite radio is optional for 2020.

Digital instrument cluster72
#3 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A configurable 7-in digital driver display is standard, with the 10.25-in widescreen pair optional. The cluster is fully digital on every car but small in base form.

OTA update capability58
#1 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

MBUX receives over-the-air infotainment and map updates. Whole-vehicle software updates arrived only with the MB.OS-based second-generation GLB.

Companion app & remote functions72
#1 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The Mercedes me app covers remote lock and unlock, remote start, a vehicle locator and status. Some services become paid subscriptions after the trial, and there is no phone-as-key.

Charging ports & device power57
#4 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

USB-C ports serve both rows and wireless charging is optional. There is no 115V outlet, which was added to the Premium Package only for 2022.

Keyless & remote access62
#4 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A power liftgate and app-based remote start are available. Sources disagree on whether KEYLESS-GO is standard for 2020: KBB lists proximity entry as standard, but Mercedes packages it, and it became standard across the line only in 2024.

Camera & parking aids65
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A rear camera is standard. The 360-degree surround-view camera and Active Parking Assist come only in the optional parking package.

Head-up display availability52
#3 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A head-up display is available on the 2020 GLB only as an option, not on the volume trim's standard equipment.

8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.77C-
Kid & car-seat practicality74
#1 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Tall, square rear doors, a sliding and reclining second row, and 39.3 in of rear headroom with 38.1 in of legroom make car seats easy for the class. The optional third row adds kid seating no rival offers.

Family safety package52
#3 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

AEB with pedestrian detection is standard. For 2020 NHTSA did not rate the GLB, IIHS never tested it, and Blind Spot Assist (Premium Package), adaptive cruise and lane keeping are all optional. Lane departure warning is absent on the volume car.

Family road-trip comfort64
#1 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Four adults ride comfortably, with good rear space, rear vents and a composed highway ride. With the third row in use only about 5 cu ft of luggage space remains, and heated seats cost extra.

Daily driving ease63
#5 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

High seating and good visibility make it easy to live with. The 8-speed dual-clutch is jerky in traffic, and stop-start restarts are noticeable without a 48V system.

Commuting cost efficiency52
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

It returns about 25–26 MPG combined on premium fuel, with luxury-brand running costs. That is typical of the class, not cheap per mile.

Parking & maneuverability69
#5 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A 182-in footprint, an upright greenhouse and a standard rear camera make it easy to place. The 38.4-ft turning circle is average, and the 360 camera sits in a package.

Work capability42
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A hitch-equipped GLB is commonly cited at 3,500 lb, and the boxy 62 cu ft hold takes bulky items. It is still a luxury crossover with modest payload.

Durability for work duty35
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The luxury-trimmed cabin and dual-clutch transmission are not suited to hard use, and a launch-year design has no fleet or work reputation.

Jobsite & upfit practicality25
#5 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Cargo tie-downs, available roof rails and an optional hitch are the extent of it. There is no 115V outlet (it was added for 2022), no washable flooring and no upfit ecosystem.

Long-distance comfort & range65
#1 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Highway cruising is relaxed thanks to a composed ride, supportive seats and about 30+ MPG highway. Wind noise and an optional rather than standard DISTRONIC keep it out of the top band.

Outdoor & adventure capability56
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Optional 4MATIC, about 7.9 in of ground clearance, the Off-Road Engineering package and an available hitch handle gravel roads and small trailers. It is not a trail vehicle.

Gear & luggage flexibility66
#1 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A square hold, a sliding 40/20/40 second row, 62 cu ft maximum, roof rails and an available hitch beat most class rivals, though space behind the second row is modest.

9Driving ExperienceOne of the GLB's strongest categories.2.03C
Handling & agility61
#6 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Competent, secure and predictable, but the tall body is not as athletic as the BMW X1. For 2020 there is no AMG GLB 35 to sharpen the range.

Steering feel56
#5 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The steering is accurate and nicely weighted but numb, with less feedback than more agile rivals.

Braking confidence68
#3 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Braking is predictable, with a firm, progressive pedal in everyday use. No instrumented 2020 stopping distance was retrieved, so it is held at a class-typical level.

Powertrain smoothness & response58
#4 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2.0T has a broad torque plateau from 1,800 rpm, but the dual-clutch is slow off the line and jerky in traffic, and stop-start restarts are rougher without the 48V system that arrived for 2024.

Drivetrain noise & vibration59
#4 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The engine is quiet at a cruise but coarse and buzzy when worked hard. It is audible without being intrusive in normal driving.

Turning circle
38.4 ft
45/100
#5 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 38.4-ft turning circle is about average for a compact crossover with this wheelbase. The chassis is unchanged from 2020.

Driving position & ergonomics72
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

An upright driving position, 40.7 in of front headroom and big glass give excellent sightlines, and physical climate controls remain. Overlapping MBUX inputs, capacitive wheel pads and 41.1 in of front legroom cost a few points.

Fun-to-drive factor52
#5 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The GLB 250 is pleasant and practicality-first but forgettable to drive, and the jerky DCT dulls it further. For 2020 there is no AMG variant for enthusiasts.

10Value & Market PositionThe GLB's best-graded category.2.63C+
Standard equipment generosity57
#4 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2020 GLB 250 comes standard with MBUX on dual 7-inch screens, LED headlights, automatic emergency braking, a power liftgate and wired CarPlay/Android Auto. Heated seats, keyless entry, blind-spot assist, adaptive cruise, the 10.25-inch screens and the third row all cost extra in packages.

Feature value per dollar70
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

At $37,595–$39,595 delivered, the 2020 GLB undercut the X1 and Q3 while offering a 221-hp 2.0T, the roomiest cabin in the class and the only optional third row. Thin standard equipment pushes a typical packaged car to about $41.5K, so this is good value rather than a standout bargain.

Trim & configuration breadth66
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2020 lineup is just the GLB 250 in FWD or 4MATIC form, spanning about $37.6K–$39.6K delivered. The AMG GLB 35 did not reach the US until the 2021 model year. The optional third-row bench and a broad package menu add flexibility, but there is no performance, hybrid or EV variant.

Sales popularity & market acceptance66
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

In its first full year the GLB sold 23,183 US units despite the pandemic, and with the new GLA it made up over 25% of Mercedes' 2020 SUV sales. That made it a strong launch in the subcompact luxury class, though still behind the BMW X1.

Brand desirability & image89
#1 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The three-pointed star is one of the strongest luxury badges in the US and a major draw for first-time luxury buyers stepping into a GLB.

Deals & incentive availability62
#7 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

As a brand-new launch the GLB sold near MSRP at first. From spring 2020, pandemic-era incentives brought subvented Mercedes-Benz Financial APR and lease offers and payment deferrals, before chip-shortage inventory squeezes ended discounting in 2021.

Model freshness82
#2 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

2020 was the first model year of the all-new X247 generation, on the current MFA2 platform with MBUX. Its facelift was four model years away (MY2024).

Critical reception & awards66
#4 of 7 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers praised the GLB's boxy, practical packaging, its rare optional third row and its MBUX tech. They criticized the firm ride, the thin standard equipment and the cramped third row. It is well reviewed but rarely the pick in comparison tests, where the BMW X1 and Volvo XC40 usually win.
