The verdict

A struggling subcompact luxury suv, strong on value and held back by performance.

The 2021 GLB is the most practical way into a Mercedes: a boxy, upright small SUV with 62 cu ft of maximum cargo space, a roomy sliding second row and the only optional third row in its class. The trade-off is ownership cost. It needs premium fuel (about $3,100 a year per EPA), it carries only a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty with no longer powertrain coverage, and much of the safety and comfort kit buyers expect comes in option packages. As a used buy it suits shoppers who value space and the badge more than low running costs or driving sparkle.

Jump to scores

Strengths

  • Class-leading space in a small footprint
  • Family-friendly, with a rare third-row option
  • Easy to see out of and to place

What holds it back

  • Premium fuel makes it costly to run
  • Expensive to keep up, with thin coverage
  • Shaky early-production quality

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainThe GLB's lowest-graded category.0.74F
Horsepower
221 hp (GLB 250); 302 hp (AMG GLB 35)
18/100
#7 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

2021 is the second model year of the first-generation X247 GLB, introduced for 2020, and carries over unchanged ahead of the 2024 facelift. The volume GLB 250 uses the conventional M260 2.0L turbo I4 at 221 hp, and the AMG GLB 35 tops the range at 302 hp.

Torque
258 lb-ft (GLB 250); 295 lb-ft (AMG GLB 35)
35/100
#3 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2.0L turbo makes 258 lb-ft from 1,800 rpm, which is competitive for the subcompact luxury class.

0–60 mph time
6.9 s (GLB 250, mfr); 5.1 s (AMG GLB 35)
43/100
#5 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Mercedes quotes 6.9 s from 0–60 for the GLB 250, mid-pack for the class. Instrumented tests have run about 6.0 s, and the AMG GLB 35 is quoted at 5.1 s.

Powertrain refinement62
#5 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The turbo four is quiet at a cruise and has a broad torque plateau. Without the 48V starter-generator that arrived for 2024, stop-start restarts are noticeable, and reviewers found the engine coarse when worked hard and slightly laggy off the line.

Transmission behavior58
#6 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 8-speed dual-clutch shifts quickly at speed but is jerky and hesitant in low-speed stop-and-go traffic, a recurring complaint about Mercedes' MFA2 models.

Max towing capacity
Up to 3,500 lbs with trailer hitch
36/100
#2 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A hitch-equipped GLB 250 4MATIC is commonly rated at 3,500 lbs braked, which is strong for the class. Mercedes-Benz USA does not prominently publish the US tow rating, and 2021-specific listings leave it blank.

AWD/4WD availability70
#4 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

4MATIC AWD is optional on the GLB 250 (FWD is the base) and standard on the AMG GLB 35. It works well in bad weather but has no low range or advanced terrain hardware.

Off-road capability42
#2 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A road-focused crossover with about 7.9 in of maximum ground clearance and modest approach/departure angles. The optional Off-Road Engineering package on 4MATIC models adds an off-road drive mode and downhill speed regulation, but there are no lockers and no off-road trim.

Powertrain lineup breadth35
#4 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

For 2021 the US GLB offers only two tunes of the same 2.0L turbo (GLB 250 at 221 hp, AMG GLB 35 at 302 hp). There is no hybrid, and the electric EQB did not reach the US until 2022.

2Efficiency & RangeOne of the GLB's weakest categories.0.97F
3SafetyOne of the GLB's strongest categories.2.42C+
NHTSA overall rating
5★ overall 4MATIC (4★ FWD); frontal 4★, side 5★, rollover 4★
100/100
#1 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA rated the 2021 GLB 4MATIC 5 stars overall with a 4-star frontal (driver 5, passenger 4), 5-star side and side pole, and 4-star rollover; the FWD GLB 250 earns 4 stars overall on its higher rollover risk.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness45
#6 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

IIHS has never crash-tested the first-generation GLB, so the 2021 model has no award and no small-overlap, moderate-overlap or side results; it sits at the top of the untested band because the shared MFA2 structure earned 5 stars from Euro NCAP and NHTSA rates the 4MATIC 5 stars overall.

Standard ADAS suite breadth60
#4 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2021 GLB 250 comes standard with Active Brake Assist (AEB with pedestrian/cyclist detection), Blind Spot Assist and Attention Assist. Adaptive cruise, lane keeping/centering and active blind-spot braking all sit in the optional Driver Assistance Package, and NHTSA lists lane departure warning as not standard. That is thinner than the standard suites on the BMW X1 and Volvo XC40.

Automatic emergency braking performance62
#3 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

IIHS has not evaluated the GLB's front crash prevention. Active Brake Assist covers vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists and did well in Euro NCAP AEB testing on the shared platform, but with no US day/night pedestrian result it cannot reach the top band.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage68
#3 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Blind Spot Assist with vehicle exit warning is standard but only alerts the driver. Active Blind Spot Assist, which brakes to intervene, and the rear cross-traffic functions require the optional Driver Assistance or parking packages.

Lane keeping & centering60
#4 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

When optioned, Active Steering Assist and Active Lane Keeping Assist provide smooth, well-regarded lane centering. A volume GLB 250 without the Driver Assistance Package has no lane departure warning at all, according to NHTSA's 2021 listing.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist72
#2 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is a refined full-speed stop-and-go system that works with Active Steering Assist and adapts speed to the route. It stays out of the top band because it is optional on the volume trim.

Hands-free driving availability20
#1 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2021 GLB has no hands-free driving option. The Driver Assistance Package is a hands-on Level 2 system, and Mercedes' DRIVE PILOT later came only to the S-Class and EQS.

Headlight performance60
#4 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The pre-facelift 2021 GLB has standard LED headlights, with Adaptive Highbeam Assist and Multibeam LED optional. IIHS has never rated the GLB's headlights, so how well they actually perform is unverified.

Outward visibility78
#2 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The GLB's boxy, upright greenhouse, tall side glass and near-vertical tailgate give clearly better sightlines than the sloping GLA. A rearview camera is standard and a 360-degree camera is optional.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability74
#2 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The wheelbase is 3.9 in longer than the GLA's, and with a sliding second row and tall, square rear doors, rear-facing seats fit more easily than in most subcompact luxury rivals. Three-across is tight, and IIHS has not rated the GLB's LATCH hardware.

4Space & ComfortOne of the GLB's weakest categories.1.27D
Seating capacity
5 standard; 7 with the optional third-row seat
25/100
#1 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The volume 2021 GLB 250 seats five. An optional two-place third row makes the GLB the only 7-seat choice in the subcompact luxury class. 2021 is the second model year of the first-generation X247 and a carry-over year for the body.

Front headroom
40.7 in
74/100
#2 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The tall, boxy X247 body gives generous front headroom.

Front legroom
41.1 in
24/100
#1 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Front legroom is adequate but on the short side for an SUV.

Rear headroom
39.3 in (second row)
82/100
#2 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The upright roof is carried well rearward, giving second-row headroom that beats most subcompact luxury rivals. The body shell is unchanged from MY2020 to MY2025.

Rear legroom
38.1 in (second row, sliding and reclining bench)
68/100
#2 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A wheelbase 10 cm longer than the GLA's and a sliding second row give roomy rear legroom for the class.

Third-row usability46
#1 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The optional third row suits only a couple of small passengers on short trips. About 29 in of legroom and roughly 5 cu ft of cargo space behind it make it token seating for adults, though no class rival offers one at all.

Cargo/trunk volume
22.0 cu ft behind 2nd row (5-seat); ~5 cu ft behind optional 3rd row
0/100
#2 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 5-seat GLB has 22 cu ft behind the second row in a usefully square hold, mid-pack for the class.

Max cargo volume
62.0 cu ft (5-seat, rear seats folded)
16/100
#1 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

62.0 cu ft with the seats folded is among the largest in the subcompact luxury class, ahead of the BMW X1.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions58
#4 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A sliding, reclining 40/20/40 second row and a flat-loading cargo hold make it versatile. The pre-facelift console carries the MBUX touchpad, which eats space, and door and bin storage is ordinary. The 115V outlet that 2022 added to the Premium Package was not offered for 2021.

Seat comfort69
#4 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The front and second-row seats are supportive on longer drives, though some find them tight. The third row is cramped. Heated seats are packaged on most US cars.

Ride quality67
#3 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The highway ride is smooth and composed, but sharp impacts come through on the larger optional wheels, and adaptive damping is optional.

Cabin quietness63
#5 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

It is quiet at a steady cruise, but the upright body brings more wind noise than expected for a luxury vehicle, and the 2.0T is coarse when worked. With no 48V starter-generator, stop-start restarts are noticeable.

Climate & comfort features60
#4 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Dual-zone climate and rear vents are standard. Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel are extra-cost options on the US 2021 GLB 250, and ventilated seats are not offered on the volume trim.

5Cost of OwnershipGrades below the middle of the scale.1.33D
Base MSRP
$39,100 (GLB 250 FWD, $38,050 + $1,050 destination)
65/100
#6 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The cheapest 2021 GLB is the front-drive GLB 250 at $38,050 before destination, or $39,100 with the $1,050 destination charge. 2021 was the generation's second model year and carried over unchanged.

Volume-Trim Price
~$43,100 (GLB 250 4MATIC with Premium package; $41,100 before options)
61/100
#4 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Most GLBs sold are the GLB 250 4MATIC: $40,050 plus $1,050 destination, or $41,100. A typical dealer build adds the roughly $2,000 Premium package, which puts it near $43,100. The AMG GLB 35 starts at $50,550 delivered.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$8,000 over 5 yr (estimates range ~$4,600–$12,000)
23/100
#7 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2021 GLB has the same M260 2.0T, 8-speed dual-clutch and A/B service schedule as the other pre-facelift (2020–2023) cars. At Mercedes dealer labor rates, 5-year maintenance plus repairs comes to about $8,000. Estimates vary widely by source.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~53% retained after ~5 yr (KBB private-party ~$20,900 on a $39,100 GLB 250)
43/100
#1 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

KBB's 2026 private-party value for a 2021 GLB 250 is about $20,900. Against the $39,100 delivered price that is roughly 53% retained after about five years, mid-pack for a luxury compact SUV.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
50/100
#2 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz USA's new-vehicle limited warranty runs 4 years or 50,000 miles. That is typical for luxury brands and short of Genesis or Lincoln coverage.

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (no separate longer powertrain term)
0/100
#3 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Mercedes offers no extended powertrain term. The engine and transmission are covered only by the 4-year / 50,000-mile basic warranty, the bottom of the band.

Complimentary maintenance & perks45
#6 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Roadside assistance for the warranty period and a Mercedes me connect trial are included. No scheduled maintenance is free: services are paid one at a time or bought through Prepaid Maintenance. That is weaker than BMW Ultimate Care (3 yr/36k) and Volvo's included maintenance.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$28,257 (≈$20,257 depreciation + $8,000 maintenance)
56/100
#3 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

$43,100 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (53% retained, or about $22,843) leaves about $20,257 in depreciation. Add the projected $8,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $28,257 in total.

6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.87C-
Predicted reliability48
#6 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

In 2021, the GLB's second model year, Consumer Reports predicted below-average reliability for it. Owner-complaint indexes are milder, but the launch-era recall load backs up the weak prediction. J.D. Power publishes no model-specific dependability score for this year.

Brand reliability track record58
#3 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz sits in the lower third of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings year after year. In J.D. Power's U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study it trails the premium leaders: Lexus, Porsche and Cadillac.

Recall & TSB history45
#7 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Twelve NHTSA campaigns cover the 2021 GLB, a heavy load for a single model year. Several are safety-relevant: corrosion of the front axle carrier (AMG GLB 35), a damaged ESP unit that can disable ABS/ESC and short-circuit, and incorrectly fitted window and driver airbags. Most of the rest are small-batch assembly errors or fleet-wide MBUX/eCall software fixes, and none involves the engine or transmission.

Powertrain durability reputation62
#5 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The volume GLB 250 4MATIC uses the M260 2.0L turbo four with the 8G-DCT dual-clutch, an MFA2 combination with no widespread failures on record. The 2021 car predates the 48V mild hybrid. The DCT draws complaints about low-speed behavior, and as of 2021 the combination had only a short track record, which keeps it in the mid band.

Interior material quality75
#3 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The pre-facelift cabin has the twin-screen widescreen cockpit and turbine vents, and it reads clearly above mainstream compacts. Reviewers note hard plastics low in the cabin and less polish than the GLC, so it is competitive rather than class-leading.

Fit & finish64
#5 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Several 2021-specific recalls stem from assembly errors at the COMPAS plant in Aguascalientes, Mexico: a mis-installed level-sensor linkage, a mis-mounted window airbag, wrong driver airbag modules, and loose wheel-arch covers and tailgate spoilers. Each batch was small, but together they point to inconsistent early-production quality, pulling this below the later-year GLBs.

Dealer & service network78
#1 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Mercedes-Benz has a dense US network of roughly 380+ dealers, with strong metro coverage and luxury amenities such as loaners. Its service satisfaction is respectable but trails Lexus and Cadillac.

Parts availability & repair cost56
#2 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Parts are readily available through dealers, and the MFA2 platform shares components with the A-Class, CLA and GLA. Mercedes OEM parts and labor rates are still among the highest in the segment.

7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.96C-
Touchscreen size
7 in standard (GLB 250); 10.25 in with Premium Package / standard on AMG GLB 35
0/100
#7 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2021 GLB 250 comes standard with a pair of 7-in MBUX displays, and the touchscreen and navigation became standard for 2021. The 10.25-in widescreen pair needs the Premium Package and is standard only on the new AMG GLB 35.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness66
#5 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

First-generation MBUX is quick with sharp graphics and offers touchscreen, console touchpad, steering-wheel touch controls, voice, and physical climate controls. The many overlapping inputs and capacitive wheel pads make it fussy, and the standard 7-in screen feels small.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto55
#5 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard but wired on the 2021 GLB; wireless projection arrived with the MY2024 facelift.

Voice control & native navigation73
#2 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The natural-language 'Hey Mercedes' assistant is standard and capable, and built-in navigation became standard on the GLB 250 for 2021. Augmented-reality guidance remains optional.

Audio system quality68
#7 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The standard audio is adequate, and the optional 12-speaker, 590-watt Burmester system is a strong upgrade. Sources conflict on whether satellite radio is standard for 2021.

Digital instrument cluster72
#4 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A configurable 7-in digital driver display is standard, with the full 10.25-in widescreen pair optional. The cluster is fully digital on every trim but small in base form.

OTA update capability58
#3 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

MBUX receives over-the-air infotainment and map updates. Whole-vehicle software updates arrived only with the MB.OS-based second-generation GLB.

Companion app & remote functions74
#2 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The Mercedes me app covers remote lock and unlock, remote start, a vehicle locator and status. Some services become paid subscriptions after the trial, and there is no phone-as-key.

Charging ports & device power58
#5 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

USB-C ports serve both rows and wireless charging is optional. The 115V outlet was added to the Premium Package only for 2022, so the 2021 car has none.

Keyless & remote access63
#5 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A power liftgate and app-based remote start are standard. Sources disagree on whether KEYLESS-GO entry is standard for 2021; US dealer cars mostly carry it through a package, and it became standard across the line in 2024.

Camera & parking aids66
#4 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A rear camera is standard. The 360-degree surround-view camera and Active Parking Assist come only in the optional Parking Assistance package.

Head-up display availability50
#5 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A head-up display is available on the X247 GLB only as a high-level option and is not standard on the volume GLB 250.

8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.84C-
Kid & car-seat practicality74
#1 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Tall, square rear doors, a sliding and reclining second row, and 39.3 in of rear headroom with 38.1 in of legroom make car seats easy for the class. The optional third row adds kid seating no rival offers.

Family safety package59
#3 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA rates the 2021 GLB 4MATIC 5 stars overall (FWD 4 stars). AEB is standard, and Blind Spot Assist with exit warning became standard for 2021. IIHS never tested it, and adaptive cruise, lane keeping and lane departure warning are optional.

Family road-trip comfort65
#1 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Four adults ride comfortably, with good rear space, rear vents and a smooth highway ride. With the third row in use only about 5 cu ft of luggage space remains, and heated seats cost extra.

Daily driving ease63
#7 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

High seating and good visibility make it easy to live with. The 8-speed dual-clutch is jerky in traffic, and stop-start restarts are noticeable without a 48V system.

Commuting cost efficiency52
#2 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

It returns about 25 MPG combined (4MATIC) on premium fuel, with luxury-brand running costs. That is typical of the class, not cheap per mile.

Parking & maneuverability70
#8 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A 182-in footprint, an upright greenhouse and a standard rear camera make it easy to place. The 38.4-ft turning circle is average, and the 360 camera sits in a package.

Work capability42
#2 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A hitch-equipped 4MATIC is commonly rated to 3,500 lb, and the boxy 62 cu ft hold swallows bulky items. It is still a luxury crossover with modest payload.

Durability for work duty36
#2 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The luxury-trimmed cabin and dual-clutch transmission are not suited to hard use, and it has no fleet or work reputation.

Jobsite & upfit practicality25
#4 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Cargo tie-downs, available roof rails and an optional hitch are the extent of it. There is no 115V outlet for 2021 (it was added for 2022), no washable flooring and no upfit ecosystem.

Long-distance comfort & range67
#1 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Highway cruising is relaxed thanks to a composed ride, supportive seats and about 30 MPG highway. Wind noise and an optional rather than standard DISTRONIC keep it out of the top band.

Outdoor & adventure capability56
#2 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Optional 4MATIC, about 7.9 in of ground clearance, an available Off-Road Engineering package and a 3,500-lb hitch handle gravel roads and small trailers. It is not a trail vehicle.

Gear & luggage flexibility66
#1 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A square hold, a sliding 40/20/40 second row, 62 cu ft maximum, roof rails and an available hitch beat most class rivals, though space behind the second row is modest.

9Driving ExperienceOne of the GLB's strongest categories.2.05C
Handling & agility62
#7 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Competent, secure and predictable, but the tall body is not as athletic as the BMW X1. The AMG GLB 35, new for 2021, is far sharper.

Steering feel56
#7 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The steering is accurate and nicely weighted but numb, with less feedback than more agile rivals.

Braking confidence68
#4 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Braking is predictable, with a firm, progressive pedal in everyday use. No 2021 instrumented stopping distance was retrieved, so it is held at a class-typical level.

Powertrain smoothness & response58
#6 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2.0T has a broad torque plateau from 1,800 rpm, but the dual-clutch is slow off the line and jerky in traffic, and stop-start restarts are rougher without the 48V system that arrived for 2024.

Drivetrain noise & vibration59
#7 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The engine is quiet at a cruise but coarse and buzzy when worked hard. It is audible without being intrusive in normal driving.

Turning circle
38.4 ft
45/100
#7 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 38.4-ft turning circle is about average for a compact crossover with this wheelbase.

Driving position & ergonomics72
#2 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

An upright driving position, 40.7 in of front headroom and big glass give excellent sightlines, and physical climate controls remain. Overlapping MBUX inputs, capacitive wheel pads and 41.1 in of front legroom cost a few points.

Fun-to-drive factor53
#7 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The GLB 250 is pleasant and practicality-first but forgettable to drive, and the jerky DCT dulls it further. Enthusiasts are pointed to the AMG GLB 35 or the BMW X1.

10Value & Market PositionThe GLB's best-graded category.2.61C+
Standard equipment generosity57
#6 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2021 GLB 250 comes standard with MBUX on dual 7-inch screens, LED headlights, automatic emergency braking, a power liftgate and wired CarPlay/Android Auto. Heated seats, keyless entry, blind-spot assist, adaptive cruise, the 10.25-inch screens and the third row all cost extra in packages.

Feature value per dollar70
#3 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

At $39,100–$41,100 delivered, the 2021 GLB undercut the X1 and Q3 while offering a 221-hp 2.0T, the roomiest cabin in the class and the only optional third row. Thin standard equipment pushes a typical packaged car to about $43K, so this is good value rather than a standout bargain.

Trim & configuration breadth76
#1 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The lineup is GLB 250 FWD, GLB 250 4MATIC and AMG GLB 35 4MATIC, spanning about $39.1K–$50.6K delivered. The optional third-row bench makes it the class's only seven-seater, and the package menu is broad. No hybrid or EV variant was offered in 2021.

Sales popularity & market acceptance68
#3 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

2021 was the GLB's best US sales year at about 26,700 units, up on its 2020 launch year. That made it a strong seller in the subcompact luxury class, though still behind the BMW X1.

Brand desirability & image89
#1 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The three-pointed star is one of the strongest luxury badges in the US and a major draw for first-time luxury buyers stepping into a GLB.

Deals & incentive availability56
#6 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Early in the 2021 model year, buyers could get modest discounts and subvented Mercedes-Benz Financial lease and APR offers. From mid-2021 the chip shortage thinned luxury inventory and discounting largely ended.

Model freshness74
#2 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

2021 was the second model year of the X247 generation, launched for 2020 on the current MFA2 platform with MBUX. The car was fresh, and its facelift was still three years off (MY2024).

Critical reception & awards66
#4 of 8 Subcompact Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers praised the GLB's boxy, practical packaging, its rare optional third row and its MBUX tech. They criticized the firm ride, the thin standard equipment and the cramped third row. It is well reviewed but rarely the pick in comparison tests, where the BMW X1 and Volvo XC40 usually win.
