The verdict

A mixed-report mid-size suv, strong on reliability and held back by efficiency.

The 2020 Highlander is the first year of the fourth generation, and it is a safe pick for a family SUV: the smooth 295-hp V6 has a proven record, it earned a 5-star NHTSA rating, and it keeps about 65% of its value after five years. The costs are a third row that really suits only kids, 16 cu ft of cargo space with every seat in use, dated 8-inch Entune tech, and a 3-year/36,000-mile warranty. Kia's Telluride and Hyundai's Palisade, both new for 2020, give you more room and more equipment for the money. The Highlander gives you better resale value and a brand with a stronger reliability record.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainOne of the Highlander's weakest categories.1.37D
Horsepower
295 hp (3.5L V6, all gas trims); 243 hp combined (2.5L hybrid)
36/100
#4 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

2020 is the launch year of the fourth-generation (XU70, GA-K platform) Highlander, and every gas trim uses the 3.5L 2GR-FKS V6 carried over from the 2017 refresh. 295 hp is competitive for the mainstream three-row class but well short of the SUV band's top end; the hybrid moves to a 243-hp 2.5L four-cylinder system this year.

Torque
263 lb-ft (3.5L V6)
36/100
#7 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

263 lb-ft from a naturally aspirated V6 that makes its peak high in the rev range — adequate for a 4,300-lb three-row, and 46 lb-ft less than the 2.4T that replaced it for 2023.

0–60 mph time
6.8 s (Car and Driver, V6); 7.5 s Edmunds-tested
45/100
#5 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Car and Driver's figure for the V6 is 6.8 seconds while Edmunds' track run returned 7.5 seconds, so the honest range is high-6s to mid-7s — brisk for a mainstream three-row and about a half-second quicker than the 2023 turbo-four replacement.

Powertrain refinement74
#3 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 2GR V6 is the refinement high point of this generation — smooth, quiet and linear with no turbo lag, praised by reviewers as one of the more polished engines in the class. It wants revs for its peak torque, which keeps it short of the top band.

Transmission behavior63
#11 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The eight-speed automatic shifts smoothly but is tuned for economy: it upshifts early and is sometimes slow or reluctant to kick down when passing power is needed. Mid-band, consistent with how the same 8AT was rated across the XU70 generation.

Max towing capacity
5,000 lbs (V6, all trims); 3,500 lbs hybrid
57/100
#5 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

5,000 lbs across every V6 trim matches the mainstream three-row class norm (Pilot, Telluride) — useful for a small boat or camper, short of body-on-frame rivals. The hybrid is rated 3,500 lbs.

AWD/4WD availability64
#10 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

AWD is optional on every 2020 V6 trim; L, LE and XLE get a basic on-demand system, while Limited and Platinum AWD get Dynamic Torque Vectoring AWD with rear driveline disconnect plus Multi-Terrain Select. No low range.

Off-road capability28
#13 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Pavement-oriented unibody crossover with 8.0 in of ground clearance, no skid plates, no locker and no off-road grade; Multi-Terrain Select on upper AWD trims helps on snow and dirt roads only.

Powertrain lineup breadth62
#3 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Two distinct powertrains — the 3.5L V6 and the new 2.5L hybrid — each available with FWD or AWD, covering mainstream needs with an electrified option on most trims. No PHEV, EV or performance variant.

2Efficiency & RangeThe Highlander's lowest-graded category.1.27D
3SafetyOne of the Highlander's strongest categories.3.16B
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (4-star frontal, 5-star side, 4-star rollover)
100/100
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 2020 Highlander — first model year of the fourth-generation XU70 on the GA-K platform, launched with the 3.5L V6 — earned NHTSA's top 5-star overall rating, with 4-star frontal and rollover sub-scores and a 5-star side rating.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness78
#7 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Good in every IIHS crashworthiness test (both small overlap fronts, moderate overlap, side, roof strength, head restraints), but the award is only a Top Safety Pick — not TSP+ — and it applies only to vehicles with specific headlights, because the reflector LEDs on L/LE/XLE rate Poor.

Standard ADAS suite breadth82
#4 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on every 2020 trim — pre-collision with pedestrian detection, full-speed-range dynamic radar cruise, lane departure alert with steering assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist and automatic high beams. Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert is standard from the LE up but absent on the base L.

Automatic emergency braking performance82
#4 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates the standard pre-collision system Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle (avoided collisions at 12 and 25 mph) and Superior for daytime pedestrian detection. Nighttime pedestrian testing did not exist for the 2020 model year, so the top of the band is not fully earned.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage72
#3 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

BSM with RCTA is standard on LE and above (not the L) and is alert-only on volume trims; rear cross-traffic braking comes only with the clearance-sonar package on upper trims, the Panoramic View Monitor is a Limited option/Platinum standard, and there is no safe-exit assist.

Lane keeping & centering70
#3 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist and Lane Tracing Assist are standard, so the Highlander centers whenever radar cruise is engaged, but the TSS 2.0 system leans on clear markings, disengages on faded lines and tight curves, and reviewers describe it as functional rather than confidence-inspiring.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist76
#3 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Full-speed-range dynamic radar cruise with stop-and-go is standard on every trim and pairs with Lane Tracing Assist for basic highway assist; calibration is conservative, with generous gaps and slow resume, and there is no lane-change assist.

Hands-free driving availability10
#2 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

No hands-free highway driving system was offered on the 2020 Highlander at any trim; it is hands-on-wheel only.

Headlight performance38
#8 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The LED reflector headlights on the L, LE and volume XLE trims rate Poor for excessive glare and fair-to-inadequate curve visibility; the Limited's projectors rate Acceptable and only the Platinum's curve-adaptive units earn Good. Automatic high beams are standard, but most buyers get the Poor lights.

Outward visibility72
#5 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A high seating position and tall glass give a good forward view, but thick rear pillars and a small third-row quarter window limit the rear-three-quarter view, and the 360-degree Panoramic View Monitor is restricted to Limited (optional) and Platinum.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability86
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Good, with complete lower-anchor hardware in the two second-row outboard positions plus additional tether anchors; wide rear doors help, though the third row has no lower anchors.

4Space & ComfortOne of the Highlander's strongest categories.2.88B-
Seating capacity
8 seats with the second-row bench (7 with available captain's chairs)
100/100
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 2020 Highlander seats eight with the standard 60/40 second-row bench; captain's chairs reduce that to seven on upper trims.

Front headroom
41.2 in (39.9 in or less on moonroof-equipped XLE/Limited/Platinum)
84/100
#4 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Generous front headroom without the moonroof; the moonroof trims give up over an inch.

Front legroom
42.0 in (40.4 in quoted on power-seat Limited)
44/100
#8 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Front legroom is about average for a mid-size three-row SUV.

Rear headroom
39.4 in (second row)
85/100
#11 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Second-row headroom is generous for the class.

Rear legroom
41.0 in with the sliding second row fully rearward
92/100
#4 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The new XU70 body brought a sliding second row with excellent legroom when it is set fully back.

Third-row usability48
#11 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The third row is fine for children but cramped for adults, with less room than Telluride/Palisade/Pilot-class rivals; it sits on the line between kid-friendly and token seating.

Cargo/trunk volume
48.4 cu ft behind the second row (16.0 cu ft behind the third row)
43/100
#4 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Cargo space grew over the previous generation behind the third row but stays below the largest three-row rivals.

Max cargo volume
84.3 cu ft with second and third rows folded
65/100
#9 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Competitive but not class-leading maximum cargo volume.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions66
#8 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The XU70 dash carries a long two-section shelf under the center stack plus a sizable console bin; storage is competitive, though the third row gets no USB ports and there is no onboard AC power.

Seat comfort72
#5 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Front seats and the optional second-row captain's chairs are comfortable for long drives; the third row is thinly padded and low.

Ride quality75
#5 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers consistently describe a smooth ride that absorbs bumps and potholes, with a little too much rebound at times.

Cabin quietness70
#6 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 2020 V6 Highlander is quieter than the later 2.4T: the V6 is near-silent at idle and highway noise is well suppressed.

Climate & comfort features70
#5 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Three-zone automatic climate is standard; heated front seats arrive on XLE, ventilated fronts and heated wheel on Limited, heated second row on Platinum.

5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.12C
Base MSRP
$35,720 (L FWD, incl. $1,120 destination); $34,600 before destination
73/100
#17 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

2020 is the launch year of the fourth-generation (XU70) Highlander, and the gas range opens on the L grade with the 3.5L V6 at $34,600 plus a $1,120 delivery charge. That is mid-band for a three-row mid-size SUV but several thousand dollars above the Kia Telluride's entry price that year.

Volume-Trim Price
~$42,320 (XLE AWD, incl. $1,120 destination); $40,720 XLE FWD delivered. Gas range $35,720–~$50,000
63/100
#17 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The XLE is the Highlander's volume grade and AWD (+$1,600) is the common pick in a three-row family SUV, putting the representative 2020 V6 at about $42,300 delivered — real money for a mainstream badge, though roughly $2,600 less than the equivalent 2023 car.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$6,400 over 5 yr on Edmunds' dealer-retail maintenance line (XLE AWD $6,417); Edmunds adds a further $2,911 repair allowance, while owner-basis estimates (RepairPal ~$489/yr) run far lower
48/100
#12 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The proven 2GR-FKS V6 and conventional 8-speed automatic carry over from the outgoing generation, so there is nothing exotic to service, but Edmunds' dealer-retail schedule for a V6 AWD three-row lands just past mid-band. Sources disagree sharply: Edmunds prices dealer service and a generous post-warranty repair allowance, while RepairPal/CarEdge reflect what owners actually spend.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~65% of MSRP retained at 5 yr (Edmunds XLE AWD: $14,130 depreciation on ~$42,300; iSeeCars nameplate average ~63.7%)
83/100
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Resale is the Highlander's strongest ownership-cost line: it holds well over ten points more value at five years than the mid-size SUV average, and 2020 cars also rode the 2021–2023 used-market spike. This is the main offset to its above-average sticker price.

Basic warranty
3 yr / 36,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
0/100
#7 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Standard Toyota coverage and the industry floor — the 2020 Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade, both new rivals that year, give 5 yr / 60,000 mi basic.

Powertrain warranty
5 yr / 60,000 mi powertrain (gas V6); Hybrid adds 8 yr / 100,000 mi hybrid components and 10 yr / 150,000 mi hybrid battery
0/100
#5 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The gas XLE scored here gets the segment-minimum 5 yr / 60,000 mi on the V6 and 8-speed automatic — half the 10 yr / 100,000 mi Hyundai and Kia offer. The hybrid's longer battery coverage (new from the 2020 model year) does not apply to the representative gas trim.

Complimentary maintenance & perks62
#5 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

ToyotaCare covers factory-scheduled service for 2 yr / 25,000 mi with 2 years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance — genuine savings on the first several services but a short window, with connected services on trial only. Mid-band.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$21,212 (≈$14,812 depreciation + $6,400 maintenance)
74/100
#5 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

$42,320 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (65% retained, or about $27,508) leaves about $14,812 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,400 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $21,212 in total.

6Reliability & QualityThe Highlander's best-graded category.3.24B+
Predicted reliability72
#4 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

2020 is the debut model year of the XU70 (fourth-generation) Highlander on the new GA-K platform, so it carries first-year-of-redesign risk, though the gas powertrain was carried over. Consumer Reports rates it about average for its model year, and J.D. Power's 86 'Great' rating was carried over from the previous generation rather than earned by this body, so it is not counted as strong evidence.

Brand reliability track record88
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Toyota is the benchmark mass-market brand for dependability, consistently at or near the top of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings and collecting multiple model-level awards in J.D. Power's dependability studies. Held just short of the band's top because Lexus, not Toyota, leads J.D. Power's VDS outright.

Recall & TSB history68
#3 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A handful of campaigns reach the 2020 model year, and the most serious one — the Denso low-pressure fuel pump that can stall the engine while driving — is an industry-wide supplier defect rather than a Highlander design fault; an ECU stop/start fuel-delivery reprogram is the other powertrain item. Typical activity for a first-year redesign, nothing systemic, but stall-risk campaigns keep it in the mid band. It also sits outside the later seat-back and airbag spiral-cable campaigns that hit the 2021–2024 cars.

Powertrain durability reputation82
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The volume gas trim uses the 3.5L 2GR-FKS V6 with the 8-speed automatic, carried over from the 2017 facelift of the previous generation and part of the long-lived GR V6 family that routinely runs well past 200,000 miles. The fuel-pump and stop/start ECU recalls are fixable ancillaries rather than core engine or transmission faults; early 8-speed shift-quality complaints are the only real blemish.

Interior material quality64
#6 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The redesigned cabin puts padded SofTex on the dash, door tops and console where hands land, but hard plastics dominate lower and rearward surfaces, and reviewers rated it competitive rather than class-leading against the Kia Telluride and Hyundai Palisade launched the same year. Limited and Platinum trims narrow the gap with leather and wood-look trim.

Fit & finish73
#2 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Toyota's Indiana plant assembles the Highlander with consistent panel gaps and few rattle complaints, and reviewers describe the cabin as solidly built. Scored a notch below later XU70 years because 2020 was the launch year of a new platform and body, when initial-quality issues are most likely.

Dealer & service network86
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

One of the densest service networks in the US, with roughly 1,200+ franchised Toyota dealers in all 50 states, and two years of scheduled maintenance included from new. Service satisfaction is solid rather than exceptional among mass-market brands.

High Highlander volume and a V6 shared across much of Toyota's lineup make parts cheap, abundant and familiar to independent shops, and measured repair cost runs below the mid-size SUV average with fewer unscheduled shop visits.

Touchscreen size
8.0 in standard on L/LE/XLE/Limited (12.3 in standard on Platinum)
12/100
#3 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Volume trims use the 8-inch screen; the 12.3-inch widescreen is Platinum-only for 2020.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness58
#13 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Entune 3.0 keeps physical knobs and is simple, but its graphics and response are dated, and the 12.3-in screen splits the display awkwardly; the faster Toyota Audio Multimedia system did not arrive until 2023.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto60
#3 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every 2020 trim but wired-only; wireless arrived with the 2023 update.

Voice control & native navigation52
#4 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Native navigation (Dynamic Navigation) is limited to upper trims and voice recognition is basic; Alexa and Waze integration help, but most owners rely on phone projection.

Audio system quality66
#5 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

An 11-speaker, 1,200-watt JBL system is standard on Limited and Platinum; lower trims have a plain six-speaker setup.

Digital instrument cluster40
#12 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Every 2020 trim keeps analog gauges, with a 4.2-in screen on L/LE and a 7-in multi-information display from XLE up; the 12.3-in full digital cluster came only in 2023.

OTA update capability25
#12 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Entune 3.0 head units take software updates by dealer or USB; only Dynamic Navigation's cloud map data refreshes over the air, and there are no whole-vehicle OTA updates.

Companion app & remote functions55
#10 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The Toyota app with Remote Connect offers remote start, lock and vehicle finder on a limited trial before subscription; no digital key for 2020.

Charging ports & device power58
#4 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Up to five USB ports across the first two rows and Qi wireless charging from XLE, but nothing for the third row and no household AC outlet.

Keyless & remote access66
#6 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Smart Key proximity entry with push-button start is standard; the power liftgate arrives on XLE but the hands-free kick sensor is Limited/Platinum-only and there is no phone-as-key.

Camera & parking aids62
#2 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Backup camera standard; front/rear parking sonar and the Panoramic View Monitor are Limited/Platinum features, and the Platinum adds a digital rearview mirror.

Head-up display availability56
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A 10-inch color head-up display is offered only on the top Platinum trim.

Kid & car-seat practicality67
#12 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Easy-to-use LATCH, a sliding second row and up to eight seats make family logistics straightforward, but the tight third row and modest cargo behind it are compromises.

Family safety package76
#2 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA 5-star overall and IIHS Top Safety Pick, with TSS 2.0 standard on every trim; blind-spot monitoring skips the base L and the good-rated headlights are Platinum-only.

Family road-trip comfort66
#9 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Quiet, smooth ride, three-zone climate and roomy second row suit long trips, but luggage space with all rows in use is small and the third row lacks USB ports.

Daily driving ease76
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The smooth V6 and quiet, soft-riding chassis make easy work of traffic; the eight-speed occasionally hesitates to downshift and the stop-start system is the only rough edge.

Commuting cost efficiency55
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The gas V6 averages a class-typical 23-24 MPG on regular fuel; average running cost for a three-row SUV, well behind the Highlander Hybrid.

Parking & maneuverability64
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Nearly 195 inches long with a 37.4-ft turning circle, it is manageable with the backup camera, but sensors and surround view are reserved for upper trims.

Work capability52
#10 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

A 5,000-lb tow rating on every V6 trim and a strong V6 handle light-to-moderate towing; cargo is family-oriented rather than work-focused.

Durability for work duty66
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

The 2GR V6 and eight-speed are long-proven Toyota hardware, though the family-oriented unibody interior isn't built for jobsite abuse; first-year of a new generation.

Jobsite & upfit practicality36
#11 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Roof rails, cargo tie-downs and a dealer tow hitch are available, but there is no onboard AC power and little work-focused equipment.

Long-distance comfort & range72
#2 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Quiet cabin, plush ride and standard adaptive cruise with lane tracing make it a capable mile-eater; about 430 miles of range is average.

Outdoor & adventure capability54
#11 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Available AWD (torque-vectoring on Limited/Platinum), 8.0 in of clearance and a 5,000-lb tow rating handle gravel roads and toys, but it has no off-road trim or protection.

Gear & luggage flexibility61
#13 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Fold-flat second and third rows open 84.3 cu ft and roof rails are available, but space behind the third row is tight for a three-row SUV.

Every 2020 Highlander gets Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 (automatic emergency braking with pedestrian/cyclist detection, full-speed adaptive cruise, lane tracing), LED headlights, an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto (new this generation) and a 295-hp V6. Competitive, but the L is plain (cloth, no power liftgate) and the new Telluride/Palisade bundle more for less at their base trims.

Feature value per dollar60
#12 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Fair value carried by strong resale and Toyota's reliability record rather than content: the XLE AWD at ~$42,300 costs more than a comparably equipped Telluride or Palisade while offering a tighter third row and less cargo space.

Trim & configuration breadth82
#2 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Five gas grades (L, LE, XLE, Limited, Platinum) each in FWD or AWD, plus a parallel Highlander Hybrid line (LE, XLE, Limited, Platinum) — a wide, well-spaced range from ~$35,700 to ~$50,000.

Sales popularity & market acceptance80
#2 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

One of the best-selling three-row SUVs in America: 212,276 units in a pandemic- and changeover-hit 2020, rebounding to an all-time record 264,128 in 2021 as the new generation ramped.

Brand desirability & image78
#1 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Toyota's reputation for reliability and resale is a genuine pull with family buyers and underpins the Highlander's strong residuals, though the brand carries little aspirational cachet.

Deals & incentive availability50
#17 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

As an all-new launch model in a supply-constrained 2020, the Highlander moved close to MSRP; occasional low-APR financing offers appeared during the pandemic, but cash discounts were modest.

Model freshness92
#2 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

2020 is the first model year of the all-new fourth generation on the GA-K platform, with CarPlay/Android Auto and more cargo room behind the third row — a buyer gets the start of a fresh cycle.

Critical reception & awards60
#9 of 18 Mid-Size SUVsCompare all →

Well reviewed for refinement, quality and the smooth V6, but in 2020 it was consistently beaten by the Kia Telluride, which swept the year's major awards, and critics flagged its cramped third row.
