The verdict
A struggling mid-size suv, strong on value and held back by efficiency.
The launch-year 2020 Atlas Cross Sport is a big, stylish two-row SUV with one of the roomiest back seats in its class (40.4 in of legroom), a 40.3 cu ft cargo hold, 5-star NHTSA crash results and a low $31,565 starting price. In return you get a modest 235 hp turbo four, poor fuel economy (20 MPG combined for the volume 2.0T 4Motion, about $3,350 a year in fuel), a heavy first-year recall record and a short 4-year/50,000-mile warranty. As a used buy it suits space-first families who get a recall-checked example at a fair price; buyers who care about running costs or long-term reliability have safer picks.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the Atlas Cross Sport's weakest categories.0.92F
2020 is the launch year of the Atlas Cross Sport. Volume trims use the 235 hp EA888 2.0T, which is modest against the 280–295 hp V6s in rival mid-size SUVs.
The turbo four makes 258 lb-ft low in the rev range, nearly matching the VR6's 266 lb-ft.
Instrumented tests put the 2.0T 4Motion at about 7.2–7.5 s to 60 mph, behind the V6 rivals that run in the high 6s. The VR6 is hardly quicker.
The 2.0T is smooth and pulls usefully at low revs around town, but it sounds strained when passing on the highway. The VR6 is smoother but thirstier, and hardly any quicker.
The 8-speed automatic shifts smoothly in normal driving but can be slow to kick down, which blunts the modest engine's response.
With the tow package, the VR6 is rated for 5,000 lbs, which is typical for the class. The volume 2.0T is rated for only 2,000 lbs.
4Motion AWD is offered with both engines and comes with an Active Control drive-mode selector that includes Snow and Off-Road modes. There is no low range or torque vectoring.
A pavement-oriented two-row crossover with about 8.6 in of ground clearance and no off-road trim, skid plates or lockers. The 4Motion Off-Road mode suits gravel and snow only.
Two gas engines (the 2.0T four and the 3.6L VR6) are each offered with FWD or 4Motion. There is no hybrid or electrified option.
2Efficiency & RangeThe Atlas Cross Sport's lowest-graded category.0.00F
The volume 2.0T 4Motion is rated at only 20 MPG combined in its launch year, well below the mid-size gas SUV median. Later model years were rerated higher.
City economy is poor because the heavy body leans hard on the small turbo engine in stop-and-go traffic.
23 MPG on the highway trails the high-20s that many mid-size rivals reach.
The 18.6-gallon tank yields only about 372 miles of combined range at the launch-year 20 MPG rating, which is below the segment middle.
This is EPA's current estimate at 15,000 miles a year on regular fuel. It runs high for the class because of the low MPG.
Both engines run on regular unleaded, and premium is not required.
3SafetyOne of the Atlas Cross Sport's strongest categories.2.27C
NHTSA rated both 2020 Atlas Cross Sport drivetrains 5 stars overall. The 4-star frontal and rollover sub-ratings keep it from being a clean sweep.
2020 is the launch year of the first-generation Atlas Cross Sport. It rates Good in both small-overlap tests, moderate overlap, both side tests and head restraints, though the updated side test notes Marginal driver pelvis protection. No 2020 Top Safety Pick is listed, which puts it in the middle band despite clean crash results.
Front Assist AEB with pedestrian monitoring, Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert are standard on every 2020 trim from the base S. Adaptive cruise with Stop and Go arrives only at SE w/ Technology, and Lane Assist is optional/upper-trim, so the core is standard but ACC and lane keeping are not.
Standard Front Assist rates Superior vehicle-to-vehicle, avoiding collisions at both 12 and 25 mph. Pedestrian detection was not rated as strongly (later 2020-23 listings show Basic day and night pedestrian results), so it sits in the middle band.
Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert are standard on all 2020 trims, and IIHS lists rear automatic braking as standard. Warnings are alert-only, with no active steering intervention on the volume trim and no trailer-aware coverage.
Lane Assist lane keeping is optional and not on the volume trims. The 2020 model predates IQ.DRIVE Travel Assist, which arrived for MY2021, so only Traffic Jam Assist on top trims offers any low-speed centering.
ACC with Stop and Go is standard from SE w/ Technology, which covers the volume trims, but the S and SE lack it. There is no combined highway assist for 2020, since Travel Assist came with the MY2021 IQ.DRIVE bundle.
Volkswagen offered no hands-free highway driving system in the US for 2020. Even the later Travel Assist is hands-on.
The S, SE and SE w/ Technology trims (the volume range) have non-adaptive LED projectors without high-beam assist and rate only Marginal. The curve-adaptive lamps with high-beam assist on SEL and above rate Good.
Tall glass and upright A-pillars give a good forward and side view. The coupe-like sloped roofline and thick D-pillars shrink the rear window and over-the-shoulder view compared with the three-row Atlas. Park Distance Control arrives at SE w/ Technology, and the Area View camera is limited to the top trim.
The very roomy two-row rear bench has full LATCH hardware in all three rear positions, and the large rear doors make fitting car seats easy. IIHS rates LATCH ease of use only Marginal, which holds it in the middle band.
4Space & ComfortGrades below the middle of the scale.1.39D
2020 is the launch year of the Cross Sport, the two-row version of the Atlas on the same 117.3-in wheelbase. Every trim seats five.
This is the published figure for non-sunroof trims; the volume SE w/ Technology has no panoramic roof (it starts at SEL). The body is unchanged through 2023.
It shares the three-row Atlas front structure, which puts it mid-pack for a mid-size SUV.
The coupe-style sloping roof costs some second-row headroom against the boxy Atlas, but adults still fit.
The full Atlas wheelbase is spent on two rows, which gives near-class-leading rear legroom. This is the launch model's signature attribute.
There is no third row, so buyers who need seven seats must step up to the standard Atlas. It is scored in the low band under the no-third-row rule.
This is very large for a two-row SUV. It still scores low because the framework's SUV band is set against three-row SUVs with the third row folded.
This is generous for a two-row mid-size crossover, though about 19 cu ft short of the three-row Atlas.
Storage is conventional but roomy: a deep center bin, large door pockets and a wide, flat cargo floor. The volume SE w/ Technology adds a 115-volt outlet in the second row, but there are no underfloor bins or fold-flat innovations.
The front seats are supportive, with a 10-way power driver's seat and standard heating from SE, and the rear bench is exceptionally roomy. Volume trims use V-Tex leatherette with flatter cushions, and ventilation is reserved for SEL Premium.
The ride is composed and well damped, and reviewers praised its comfort. The 20-inch wheels on the volume SE w/ Technology (21s on top R-Line trims) add thump over sharp seams.
Highway noise is about average for the class. Wind noise is well controlled and reviewers called the cabin quiet, but tire roar on 20-inch wheels and a buzzy 2.0T under load come through.
Heated front seats and dual-zone Climatronic start at SE, and remote start arrives on the volume SE w/ Technology. The heated steering wheel waits until SEL, and ventilated front seats and heated rear seats until SEL Premium, so the key features land on mid and upper trims.
5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.77C-
2020 is the launch year of the first-generation Atlas Cross Sport. The entry S with the 235 hp 2.0T and FWD undercuts most two-row midsize rivals of its size.
SE w/Technology is the volume configuration (IQ.DRIVE driver assists, remote start, hands-free liftgate), and most buyers add the $1,900 4Motion AWD, which unlike the 2020 three-row Atlas was offered with the 2.0T.
Same EA888 2.0T / VR6 hardware as the 2021–2023 Cross Sport; a launch-year car carries slightly more repair exposure, so the estimate sits a little above the in-dataset 2022 figure. VW parts and labor run above Japanese and Korean rivals.
The first-generation Cross Sport depreciates faster than Toyota/Honda rivals, and the 2024 refresh dates the pre-refresh car on the used market.
The Cross Sport launched under VW's new MY2020 4-year/50,000-mile New Vehicle Limited Warranty (the 6/72 People First warranty applied to earlier Atlas/Tiguan models). Beats 3/36 from Toyota/Honda/GM, trails Hyundai/Kia 5/60.
There is no separate, longer powertrain term — engine and transmission are covered only for the 4 yr/50,000 mi basic period, the shortest powertrain coverage in the class.
VW Carefree Coverage includes the first two scheduled services (2 yr/20,000 mi), roadside assistance and a Car-Net connected-services trial. Useful, but the 20,000-mile cap is tight.
$40,265 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (48% retained, or about $19,327) leaves about $20,938 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $26,938 in total.
6Reliability & QualityGrades below the middle of the scale.1.24D
2020 is the launch year of the Atlas Cross Sport (generation began 2020), and first-year builds carry the most teething issues. Consumer Reports rates the closely related 2020 Atlas only about average, and J.D. Power puts the shared-platform Atlas in its Fair band for Quality & Reliability; owner surveys are kinder but cite fuel pump, battery and cooling complaints, so it sits at the bottom of the average band.
Volkswagen has sat in the lower third of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings and below the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study across the years around 2020, with electronics and infotainment the most-cited problem areas. This is a persistent multi-year pattern.
Eleven NHTSA campaigns cover the 2020 Cross Sport, the most of any year of this nameplate. They include a Do-Not-Drive steering-knuckle campaign plus a second knuckle-fracture recall, two separate PODS campaigns that can deactivate the passenger air bag, corroding door-harness contacts that delay side air-bag deployment, and an A/C drain leak that can damage the air bag module. Seat-frame welds, over-cured tires and TPMS non-compliance round out a heavy launch-year record.
The volume 2020 Cross Sport uses the 235-hp 2.0L EA888 turbo-four with an 8-speed Aisin automatic; the optional 3.6L VR6 is an old, well-proven if thirsty design. The EA888 family is high-volume and broadly durable but carries known water-pump/thermostat-housing and carbon-buildup service items. Unlike 2021-2023, MY2020 is not covered by the connecting-rod-bearing engine-failure or injector-filter recalls, though owners report fuel-pump and cooling-system complaints.
The pre-refresh cabin is roomy and logically laid out but plain, with reviewers noting abundant hard plastics on the doors and lower dash, especially on lower trims. That is competitive for a mainstream mid-size two-row SUV but behind rivals like the Hyundai Santa Fe in perceived richness; the upgraded interior arrived only with the 2024 refresh.
Built in Chattanooga alongside the Atlas, the Cross Sport shows solid panel fit with no systemic rattle pattern, but its launch year produced several assembly-quality campaigns: steering knuckles damaged in production, improperly welded seat frames, a mis-aimed headlight and missing GVWR labels. That plus a Fair J.D. Power quality rating keeps it at the low end of the average band.
Volkswagen's US network of roughly 600-650 dealers is about half the size of Toyota's, which leaves coverage gaps in rural markets. Metro coverage is adequate, and owners rate the dealership experience only middling.
VW parts and labor cost more than mainstream Japanese and domestic rivals, and repair-cost indices put the brand above average for annual repair spend. The shared MQB/EA888 parts pool and a large aftermarket keep availability good, and the 2020 model year carried VW's 6-year/72,000-mile transferable bumper-to-bumper warranty, which offsets early repair costs.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Atlas Cross Sport's weakest categories.1.22D
The 2020 MIB II units use a 6.5-inch Composition Color screen on the S and an 8-inch screen from SE up, including the volume SE w/ Technology. Both are small for the class.
The MIB II Composition Media unit is simple and logically laid out, with physical climate controls and a volume knob. It is an older, slower generation than the 2021 MIB3, though, and the small screen limits its usefulness.
App-Connect (Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, MirrorLink) is standard on every 2020 trim but is wired only. Wireless App-Connect and multi-phone pairing arrived with MIB3 for 2021.
Embedded Discover Media navigation starts at SEL, above the volume trim. Voice control is command-based and predates the improved recognition MIB3 brought for 2021.
The volume trims use a basic six-speaker system. A Fender Premium Audio system is limited to SEL Premium; it is pleasant but not a class benchmark.
The 10.25-inch Volkswagen Digital Cockpit is standard only from SEL. The volume SE w/ Technology keeps analog gauges with a small multifunction display, so the cluster is good where fitted but not widely available.
The 2020 car's MIB II head unit has no meaningful over-the-air updates; VW's myVW software updates target MIB3 vehicles from 2021. Map and firmware updates need a dealer or USB.
Car-Net through the myVW app offers remote lock/unlock, vehicle status, parked-car location and remote start on equipped trims, and a Wi-Fi hotspot is standard. There is no phone-as-key, and the app has a mixed reputation.
USB-C ports are standard up front, and SE adds two second-row USB ports. The volume SE w/ Technology adds a 115-volt outlet in the second row, but wireless charging is not on the volume trim.
KESSY proximity keyless access and push-button start arrive at SE, not on the base S. The volume SE w/ Technology adds remote start and the hands-free Easy Open liftgate. There is no phone-as-key.
A rear camera is standard, and front and rear Park Distance Control come on the volume SE w/ Technology. The Area View overhead camera and Park Assist are limited to SEL Premium.
No 2020 Atlas Cross Sport trim offered a head-up display; VW added one only with the 2024 refresh.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.73C-
40.4 in of rear legroom, big rear door openings and a wide 40.3 cu ft cargo bay make daily kid-and-stroller logistics easy. IIHS rates LATCH ease of use only Marginal.
It has a 5-star NHTSA overall rating, Good IIHS crash results, and standard AEB, blind-spot monitoring and rear traffic alert on every trim. But there was no 2020 Top Safety Pick, the volume trims' headlights rate Marginal, and lane keeping is only on upper trims (Travel Assist came in 2021).
The very roomy second row and 40.3 cu ft of luggage space with all seats occupied suit long family trips, and the volume trim's 115-volt rear outlet helps. Heated rear seats are limited to the top trim, and there is no rear entertainment.
Light steering and composed low-speed manners make it easy in traffic, and the volume SE w/ Technology has adaptive cruise with Stop and Go. Turbo lag off the line and a hesitant 8-speed add some friction.
The volume 2.0T 4Motion is rated only 20 MPG combined (19 for the VR6), and fuel runs about $3,350 a year. That makes it an expensive commuter in its launch year.
A 195.5-in, 78-in-wide body with a roughly 40.5-ft turning circle is cumbersome in tight lots. The sloping roofline shrinks the rear window, although Park Distance Control is on the volume trim. The 360-degree camera is limited to SEL Premium.
The volume 2.0T tows only 2,000 lbs, and the 5,000-lb rating requires the VR6 with the tow package. The flat 77.8 cu ft load floor helps with materials, but this is a unibody crossover.
The EA888 2.0T and VR6 are well-understood engines, and V-Tex leatherette wipes clean. But this is a first-year model from a brand that ranks below average in dependability, and it has no work-duty track record.
Roof rails, an available hitch and a 115-volt rear outlet on the volume SE w/ Technology cover light duty. There is no high-output onboard power or work-focused upfit ecosystem.
Stable, comfortable highway manners and a roomy rear seat make it a competent tourer, and the volume trim has adaptive cruise. But range is only about 372 miles, there is no lane-centering Travel Assist in 2020, and tire noise on 20-inch wheels intrudes.
4Motion with Active Control drive modes (including Snow and Off-Road), about 8.6 in of clearance and standard roof rails handle gravel roads and bike racks. The volume 2.0T tows only 2,000 lbs, and there is no off-road trim or underbody protection.
40.3 cu ft with the seats up and 77.8 cu ft folded is a large, squared-off load space for a two-row SUV, extended by roof rails and an available hitch. The plain 60/40 split and sloping tailgate limit tall items.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the Atlas Cross Sport's strongest categories.2.04C
It shares the Atlas MQB chassis but is lighter and lower, and reviewers found it drives smaller than its size, with decent body control. It still leans when hurried.
VW's electromechanical rack is accurate and easy to place, but it is light and short on feedback.
Reviewers liked the brakes, and stops are about average for a roughly 4,300-lb mid-size crossover. Some softness in initial pedal travel holds it back.
The 235-hp 2.0T pulls adequately once on boost (0–60 in 7.2–7.5 s), but there is lag off the line. The 8-speed is smooth yet hesitant to downshift.
The four-cylinder works hard to move a two-ton crossover and sounds strained when passing. The optional VR6 is smoother but hardly quicker. Cruising refinement is fine.
The Cross Sport keeps the full Atlas 117.3-in wheelbase, so it turns no tighter than the three-row model, near the bottom of the mid-size SUV band.
The driving position is commanding and adjusts well, with physical climate controls and conventional switchgear. The tapering roofline and thick rear pillars cost over-the-shoulder visibility.
This sportier-feeling Atlas is lighter and lower, with pleasant road manners. But neither the 2.0T nor the VR6 has much character, and R-Line is an appearance package.
10Value & Market PositionThe Atlas Cross Sport's best-graded category.2.38C+
The 2020 S includes LED headlights, Front Assist AEB, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, plus App-Connect, but the Digital Cockpit, adaptive cruise/IQ.DRIVE, remote start and power liftgate require SE or SE w/Technology. Competitive for the price rather than generous.
A ~$31.6K start undercuts most two-row midsize rivals and buys a huge rear seat and cargo hold, but the 235 hp 2.0T is down on power, the VR6 adds cost for little speed, fuel economy is below average and resale is soft.
A wide, well-spaced lineup from ~$31.6K S through SE, SE w/Technology, SEL and SEL Premium, with R-Line versions, FWD or 4Motion on most trims and a choice of 2.0T or 3.6L VR6. No hybrid.
A spring-2020 launch into the pandemic produced only ~15,100 calendar-2020 sales, but the model quickly ramped to ~44,300 in 2021 — a solid mid-pack seller rather than a segment leader.
Volkswagen is a mainstream brand with some German-engineering appeal that suits the design-led Cross Sport, but it isn't aspirational in the US and trails Toyota/Honda on reliability perception, which shows in soft resale.
Model-year 2020 sold mostly through the 2020 pandemic period, when VW (like most brands) ran 0% financing and payment-deferral offers before the 2021 chip shortage erased discounts; as a new launch, cash rebates on the Cross Sport itself were modest.
2020 is the launch year of the all-new Atlas Cross Sport on the MQB platform, with styling that previewed the 2021 Atlas refresh. The interior tech, however, is shared with the 2018 Atlas rather than cutting-edge.
Well-received at launch for its styling, roomy rear seat and cargo space, with critics faulting the modest engines and fuel economy. Ranked among the better two-row SUVs but not a class-leading comparison winner.
