The verdict
A mixed-report mid-size suv, strong on safety and held back by efficiency.
The 2025 Atlas Cross Sport is a big, safe, well-equipped two-row SUV. It earns an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, offers 40.4 inches of rear legroom, and comes with a full driver-assist suite even on the $38,615 base SE. The trade-offs are a single 269-hp four-cylinder that returns only 21 MPG combined with AWD, a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty that is the only powertrain coverage, weak resale value and middling reliability. It suits buyers who want rear-seat room and safety in a stylish package, as long as they budget for fuel and depreciation.
Jump to scoresStrengths

- Generous tech on every trim
What holds it back
- Thirsty for a four-cylinder
- One engine, and not a quick one
- Short warranty and weak resale value

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the Atlas Cross Sport's weakest categories.1.00D
2025 carries over the 2024 refresh of the first-generation (2020-on) Atlas Cross Sport. Every trim gets the same 2.0L turbo four at 269 hp; the VR6 was dropped at the 2024 refresh.
273 lb-ft arrives low in the rev range, which suits a two-row SUV lighter than the three-row Atlas. In absolute terms it trails V6 and larger-turbo rivals.
Instrumented tests of the refreshed 269-hp 2.0T 4Motion fall around 7.0–7.5 s, and the 2025 powertrain is unchanged. That is adequate but not quick for a mid-size two-row.
The turbo four is smooth and quiet at cruise and has a broad torque plateau. Reviewers note some low-speed lag and a coarse note when it is pushed. It works a little less hard here than in the heavier three-row Atlas.
The 8-speed torque-converter automatic shifts smoothly and quietly in everyday driving. It can hesitate before downshifting for a passing move.
A 5,000-lb rating is strong for a two-row mid-size crossover. It matches three-row rivals and beats the 3,500-lb ratings common in the class.
4Motion AWD is optional on the SE trims and standard from SEL up, so it is widely available. A drive-mode selector includes Snow and Off-Road modes, but there is no low range, locker or torque vectoring.
This is a pavement-oriented, coupe-styled unibody crossover with about 8 in of ground clearance and no off-road trim, skid plates or low range. An Off-Road drive mode is its only provision.
Every trim gets the same 269-hp 2.0T with an 8-speed automatic. There is no V6, hybrid, PHEV or EV.
2Efficiency & RangeThe Atlas Cross Sport's lowest-graded category.0.19F
The volume 4Motion Cross Sport is EPA-rated 21 MPG combined, which is middling-to-weak for a gas two-row mid-size SUV. The FWD version manages 23.
City economy is the weak point: a turbo four in a roughly 4,400-lb body with no hybrid assist.
The 8-speed's tall top gears give respectable highway economy of 26 MPG on both drivetrains.
An 18.6-gallon tank at 21 MPG combined gives about 391 miles, mid-pack for a gas mid-size SUV.
EPA's estimate for the volume 4Motion Cross Sport is $3,200 a year on regular fuel, a sizeable recurring cost next to hybrid rivals.
The EPA rates it on regular 87-octane, but VW recommends premium to reach the full rated output. That is optional, not required, so it lands in the 'premium recommended' band.
3SafetyThe Atlas Cross Sport's best-graded category.3.33B+
NHTSA gives the 2025 Atlas Cross Sport its top 5-star overall rating, although the frontal crash and rollover sub-ratings are 4 stars.
The 2025 Atlas Cross Sport earns IIHS TOP SAFETY PICK+, with Good results in the small overlap, updated moderate overlap and updated side tests. That beats the three-row 2025 Atlas, which drops to TSP on a Marginal updated moderate overlap result. It falls just short of the top of the band because the pedestrian front crash prevention rating is Acceptable.
Since the 2024 refresh, IQ.DRIVE is standard on every Atlas Cross Sport trim, base SE included. It bundles Front Assist AEB with pedestrian monitoring, blind-spot monitoring, Rear Traffic Alert, stop-and-go ACC, Lane Assist and Travel Assist, so none of the core five features is limited to higher trims.
The standard Front Assist system rates only Acceptable in the IIHS updated pedestrian test, which includes nighttime scenarios. That clears the TSP+ bar but trails the class leaders.
Active Blind Spot Monitor (with steering intervention), Rear Traffic Alert and Exit Warning are standard on every trim. The only gap keeping it from the very top is the lack of trailer-aware blind-spot coverage, even though the vehicle is rated to tow 5,000 lb.
Lane Assist and Travel Assist lane centering are standard and they work. However, reviewers describe the centering as wandery within the lane and the lane-keep intervention as overly aggressive, which puts it mid-band.
Full-speed-range ACC with stop-and-go is standard and pairs with Travel Assist for hands-on highway assistance. It loses points for clumsy reactions when another car cuts into the gap ahead.
No 2025 Atlas Cross Sport trim offers hands-free driving. Travel Assist is a hands-on system that uses a capacitive steering wheel to check for the driver's hands.
IIHS rates both headlight variants Good: the SE-trim and SEL-trim LED projectors, each with curve-adaptive lighting and high-beam assist. Every trim therefore gets Good lighting with automatic high beams.
The sloping coupe-style roofline costs rearward vision: the rear window is smaller than the boxy Atlas's and the rear pillars are thick. A rearview camera is standard, but the 360-degree Area View camera is reserved for the top trim.
IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Marginal, because the lower anchors are hard to reach and take too much force to attach. The wide rear doors and roomy two-row cabin help with installing car seats, but the anchors themselves are the weak point.
4Space & ComfortGrades below the middle of the scale.1.50D
The Atlas Cross Sport is the two-row Atlas. It keeps the 117.3-in wheelbase but trades the third row for a lower roofline, so all five 2025 trims seat five.
Published 2025 figure. The panoramic sunroof is optional on the volume SE w/Technology, and sunroof-equipped cars lose roughly an inch.
Shares its front structure with the three-row Atlas. Mid-pack for a mid-size SUV, where 43 in or more is common.
The sloped roofline costs about half an inch of second-row headroom compared with the boxy Atlas. That is adequate, but not generous for six-footers.
The Cross Sport's best space figure. It devotes the full Atlas wheelbase to two rows, which puts second-row legroom near the top of the mid-size class.
There is no third row. Buyers who need seven seats must step up to the standard Atlas. It is scored in the low band under the no-third-row rule rather than omitted.
Roomy for a five-seater. The framework's SUV band, however, includes three-row SUVs measured with the third row folded, where 55–80 cu ft is routine.
Mid-pack maximum capacity. It is competitive with two-row rivals but about 19 cu ft short of the three-row Atlas.
Solid, conventional storage: a deep center bin, large door pockets and plenty of cupholders, plus a 115V outlet from SE w/Technology and standard 45W USB-C ports. There is no standout innovation such as an underfloor bin or fold-flat console.
Supportive front seats include an 8-way power driver's seat with power lumbar plus heating and ventilation from the base SE. The 40.4 in of rear legroom makes the second row comfortable for adults. New for 2025, the SEL Premium R-Line adds massage and 4-way lumbar for both front seats, but the volume trim falls short of the plushest rivals.
Settled and composed at highway speed, but tuned firm. The 20-inch wheels (21s on SEL Premium R-Line) thump over seams and feel brittle on broken pavement.
Reviews are split. The 2024 refresh added insulation, and some testers find wind noise low, while others criticize highway tire roar. That averages out to mid-pack.
Generous from the base trim: heated and ventilated front seats plus a heated steering wheel are standard on the SE. Remote start, rear sunshades and a hands-free liftgate arrive with SE w/Technology. Three-zone climate and heated rear seats are reserved for upper trims.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Atlas Cross Sport's weakest categories.1.38D
2025 is the second model year of the MY2024 refresh (2.0T is the only engine), and the SE remains the entry trim. The two-row Cross Sport starts about $1,000 below the three-row Atlas.
The SE w/Technology with 4Motion is taken as the volume trim, as on the Atlas. As configured, it is priced in line with the volume trims of mid-size two-row rivals such as the Passport and Blazer.
KBB's 2025 projection is below the roughly $5,000–7,000 typical for the class. That is helped by Carefree Coverage paying for the first two services and the 4/50 warranty covering early repairs.
Depreciation is the biggest ownership cost and is weaker than for Japanese and Korean rivals. KBB's projection holds slightly better than the three-row Atlas (~40%).
VW's 4 yr / 50,000 mi New Vehicle Limited Warranty beats the 3/36 from Honda, Ford, GM and Nissan. It falls short of Hyundai and Kia's 5/60.
VW has no separate, longer powertrain warranty, so engine and transmission coverage ends at 4 yr / 50,000 mi. That is the shortest powertrain term among mainstream rivals: most offer 5/60, and Hyundai and Kia offer 10/100.
Carefree Coverage pays for the first two scheduled services (2 yr / 20,000 mi) and adds 3 years of 24/7 roadside assistance plus a Car-Net trial. That is on a par with ToyotaCare, better than roadside-only Honda and GM, and shorter than Hyundai's 3/36.
$44,620 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (44% retained, or about $19,633) leaves about $24,987 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,840 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $29,827 in total.
6Reliability & QualityGrades below the middle of the scale.1.50D
2025 is the second model year of the MY2024 refresh, which brought the 2.0T-only powertrain, a new 8-speed automatic and 12-inch infotainment, and it carries over with running fixes. J.D. Power's Quality & Reliability rating for it is average, but Consumer Reports still won't recommend the closely related Atlas because of subpar reliability, and owners rate reliability as the model's weakest point. The signals are mixed, so it sits at the low end of the average band, below the segment median.
Volkswagen has sat in the lower third of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings and below the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study for several years running. Electronics and infotainment are the most-cited problem areas, and the pattern holds across multiple years.
Five NHTSA campaigns cover MY2025, which is heavy for one model year. They include a transmission manufacturing defect that can cause loss of drive power, an engine-cover fire risk, under-torqued chassis/brake/suspension bolts, and two rearview-camera/display software campaigns on the new infotainment platform. None is a park-outside or do-not-drive order. Low band.
The 269 hp 2.0L EA888 evo4 turbo-four is a very high-volume engine family, and evo4 addressed earlier oil-consumption and timing-chain-tensioner failures. In this application it is only in its second year, paired with a newly adopted 8-speed automatic in a heavy mid-size SUV. Known water-pump/thermostat-housing and carbon-buildup service items, plus a small 2025 transmission manufacturing recall, keep it mid band.
The 2024-refresh cabin carries over for 2025: an upscale design with soft-touch upper dash and door tops and a freestanding 12-inch screen, competitive for a mainstream two-row mid-size SUV. Unlit capacitive climate and volume sliders and hard lower-cabin plastics keep it out of the top band.
Built in Chattanooga alongside the Atlas, the Cross Sport shows solid panel fit and no pattern of rattle complaints. Assembly-line campaigns on MY2025 (under-torqued chassis bolts, mis-manufactured transmissions) and electronics glitches hold initial quality back.
Volkswagen has roughly 600-650 US dealers, about half Toyota's count. Metro coverage is adequate, but there are rural gaps, and service satisfaction is mid-pack. Mid band.
VW parts and out-of-warranty repairs cost more than Japanese and domestic equivalents. The shared MQB/EA888 parts pool and a healthy aftermarket offset this, and a 4-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty covers early ownership. Lower-middle band.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Atlas Cross Sport's strongest categories.2.67C+
The 12.0-inch floating touchscreen arrived with the 2024 refresh and is standard on all 2025 trims. That is mid-pack against rivals with 15–17.7-inch screens.
The MIB3 head unit is quick and legible. However, temperature and volume run through unlit capacitive sliders and the steering wheel has haptic pads, which is the most consistent complaint about this car.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every 2025 trim, paired with 15W wireless charging that is newly standard for 2025.
Unlike most 2025 VWs, the 2025 Atlas Cross Sport did not get the ChatGPT-backed IDA assistant, which reached the Atlas family only for 2026. Voice remains the conventional command-based system, and embedded Discover Pro navigation starts at SEL.
The base system is thin for a premium-priced SUV. The 12-speaker Harman Kardon upgrade is clean, but it is confined to the top SEL Premium R-Line.
Digital Cockpit Pro, a fully digital and reconfigurable display of about 10.3 inches, is standard on every trim. It is just smaller than the 12.3-inch clusters some rivals use.
VW offers OTA software updates for most MY2020-and-newer vehicles through the myVW app. Published scope is infotainment and system software, not feature-adding whole-vehicle updates.
myVW covers remote lock/unlock, remote start where equipped, vehicle status and parked location. Remote functions sit behind Car-Net/myVW+ plans, there is no phone-as-key, and owners report spotty app reliability.
Every trim has four 45W USB-C ports and a 15W wireless pad, and a 115V household outlet comes from SE w/Technology. That combination of fast ports, wireless charging and an AC outlet earns the top band.
Push-button start is standard. The volume SE w/Technology adds remote start and the hands-free Easy Open/Close liftgate. Full KESSY proximity entry is limited to upper trims, and there is no phone-as-key.
A rear camera is standard and front/rear Park Distance Control arrives on SE w/Technology. Area View 360-degree cameras and Park Assist are reserved for the top SEL Premium R-Line, which is the classic middle band.
The head-up display arrived with the 2024 refresh and is fitted from SEL upward, one rung above the volume trim. That still beats several rivals that offer no HUD at all.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.07C
Class-leading rear legroom, large rear doors and a wide 40.3 cu ft cargo bay make kid logistics easy. IIHS, however, rates the LATCH hardware Marginal.
It earns IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and a 5-star NHTSA overall rating, and the full IQ.DRIVE suite is standard on the base SE. Only the Acceptable pedestrian AEB result and the Marginal LATCH keep it from the very top.
Generous second-row space, rear vents, 45W USB-C ports and 40.3 cu ft of luggage room suit long trips. Rear sunshades, heated rear seats and the 115V outlet are trim-gated, and road noise is noticeable.
Composed manners, torque from 1,600 rpm and standard stop-and-go adaptive cruise make for an easy commute. The touch sliders, aggressive lane-keep and obtrusive stop/start add daily friction.
At 21 MPG combined with 4Motion, it is among the thirstiest two-row mid-size SUVs in 2025, where hybrid rivals exceed 30 MPG. EPA puts annual fuel cost at $3,200.
At 195.6 in long and 78.3 in wide, with a turning circle of about 40 ft, it is a handful in tight urban spaces. The smaller rear window hurts sightlines, and the base SE lacks parking sensors.
A 5,000 lb tow rating when properly equipped and 77.8 cu ft of flat load space handle light work duty. It remains a unibody five-seater with a 269 hp four-cylinder.
The EA888 2.0T is a high-volume engine and the standard V-Tex leatherette wipes clean. VW, however, ranks near the bottom of J.D. Power dependability, and the 4 yr/50k mi warranty offers little cover for hard use.
Roof rails, a factory hitch, a 115V outlet and wipe-clean upholstery cover light trade use. There is no bed and no work-focused upfit ecosystem.
Stable highway manners, plus adaptive cruise and Travel Assist on every trim, make it a competent tourer. About 390 miles of AWD range, seam thump from the 20-inch tires and a coarse four-cylinder under load keep it out of the top band.
4Motion with Snow and Offroad modes, a 5,000 lb tow rating and standard roof rails handle gravel roads and trailers. Only 6.3 in of ground clearance, no off-road trim and FWD on the cheaper trims limit it.
With 40.3 cu ft seats-up and 77.8 cu ft folded, there is a lot of squared-off space for a two-row SUV, extended by roof rails and an available hitch. The plain 60/40 split and sloping tailgate limit tall items.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.18C
It uses the Atlas's MQB chassis but is lighter and lower, and reviewers say it drives smaller than it is. Body control is decent, though it leans when hurried.
The variable-ratio electric rack is accurate and easy to place. It is light and offers little feedback.
A 70–0 mph stop of about 175 ft is slightly better than average for a roughly 4,300 lb mid-size SUV. Long, soft initial pedal travel undercuts confidence.
The 269 hp 2.0T and 8-speed automatic shift cleanly and reach 60 mph in about 7.5 s. There is lag off the line, and the stop/start system restarts with a surge.
Quiet at a cruise, but the four-cylinder sounds coarse and thrummy under load compared with V6 rivals.
It shares the Atlas's 117.3-in wheelbase, so it turns no tighter than the three-row model. That places it near the bottom of the mid-size band.
The seats are supportive and the driving position commanding and adjustable. The capacitive steering-wheel pads, unlit touch sliders and thick rear pillars all take points away.
The most engaging Atlas: lighter, lower and quicker. Its appeal is competence rather than character, there is no performance variant, and the new SEL R-Line Black is appearance-only.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Atlas Cross Sport's strongest categories.2.22C
Every 2025 Cross Sport, from the $38,615 SE up, includes the IQ.DRIVE assist suite, a 12-inch touchscreen, a 10.3-inch digital cluster, wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, a wireless charging pad and plenty of USB-C ports. That is strong base content for a mid-size two-row. Proximity entry, the power liftgate and the 360 camera still require the SE w/Technology or SEL.
About $44,600 for an SE w/Technology 4Motion buys a roomy two-row with a big cargo area, a 5,000-lb tow rating and broad safety content, which is reasonable. But the Cross Sport is priced close to the three-row Atlas, which offers more space. The 4/50 warranty also covers the powertrain no longer than the rest of the car, resale is middling, and the turbo four is unrefined.
Five trims (SE, SE w/Technology, SEL, SEL R-Line Black, SEL Premium R-Line) span $38,615–$53,620, with FWD or 4Motion on the SE trims. Choice is otherwise narrow: one 2.0T engine across the range, no hybrid or V6 since the 2024 refresh, and the R-Line Black is largely an appearance package.
Volume is modest and falling: about 31,600 units in 2025, down nearly 19% from 2024, well behind the Blazer, Passport and Murano and far behind its three-row Atlas sibling.
In the US, Volkswagen is a neutral mainstream badge with some European driving-feel appeal. It lacks the trust Toyota and Honda carry, and is held back by average reliability standing, a smaller dealer network and below-average resale.
With sales sliding and VW volume down, the Cross Sport is routinely supported with subvented APR, lease support and cash allowances through VW Credit, and it transacts below sticker. Part of that discount comes back as weaker resale.
2025 is the second year of the substantial MY2024 refresh, which brought a new front and rear, a redesigned interior with the 12-inch screen, and the 2.0T. The only change for 2025 is the SEL R-Line Black trim. The platform dates to the 2020 launch, there is no electrified option, and the related three-row Atlas has already been shown as a new 2027 generation, so replacement is coming.
Reviewers find it comfortable, spacious for two rows and easy to live with. They also criticise disappointing interior materials, frustrating capacitive controls and the coarse 2.0T, and it is rarely the class pick. IIHS honors are its main recognition.
