The verdict
A struggling mid-size suv, strong on safety and held back by performance.
The 2024 Atlas Cross Sport is a roomy, well-equipped two-row SUV with strong crash-test results. The refresh made a 12-inch touchscreen, a digital cluster and a full driver-assist suite standard from the $38,410 base SE. The trade-offs are a single 269-hp four-cylinder that is merely adequate and runs at 22 MPG, Volkswagen's poor dependability record, a launch year with eight recalls, and resale that drops faster than Honda or Toyota. It makes the most sense bought with a discount or used, where the depreciation works in your favor.
Jump to scoresStrengths

- Big back seat and a generous cargo hold
- Modern tech standard on every trim
What holds it back
- Shaky reliability record and thin warranty
- One adequate engine, nothing more
- Thirsty next to hybrid rivals

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Atlas Cross Sport's lowest-graded category.0.86F
2024 is the mid-cycle refresh year of the first-generation Cross Sport: the 276 hp VR6 was dropped and the 2.0L turbo four, uprated to 269 hp, became the only engine on every trim — so the model-range max is also 269 hp.
The refreshed EA888 makes 273 lb-ft from just 1,600 rpm — up from the pre-refresh 2.0T's 258 lb-ft and above the departed VR6's 266 lb-ft — giving good low-end pull, though the absolute figure trails V6 and hybrid mid-size rivals.
Instrumented tests of the 2024 2.0T 4Motion land between 7.5 and 7.7 seconds; ~7.6 s is representative of the volume SE w/Technology 4Motion — mid-pack pace for a mid-size crossover.
The low, flat torque plateau makes the 2.0T feel willing in normal driving with little turbo lag, but the four-cylinder turns audibly coarse and strained under hard acceleration in a ~4,400 lb body — the recurring complaint since the VR6 left the lineup this year.
New for 2024, the 8-speed torque-converter automatic is now a shift-by-wire unit sourced from Hyundai; reviewers credit its quick reactions, but first-year owner reports of low-speed shudder and occasional rough 2–4 shifts keep it out of the top band.
Rated at 5,000 lbs properly equipped — unchanged through the refresh despite losing the VR6, matching the three-row Atlas and ahead of the 3,500 lb two-row crossovers it is cross-shopped against.
4Motion with Active Control is optional on the SE trims and standard from SEL upward, so most of the range is AWD — but it is a conventional on-demand system with drive modes only, no low range, locking differential or torque vectoring.
Bottom band: a style-led coupe-roof unibody crossover with about 6.3 inches of ground clearance, road-biased tires, no skid plates, no low range and no locker; the Offroad mode remaps throttle and traction control only, and no off-road edition is offered in the Cross Sport range.
Bottom band — one engine, one transmission. 2024 narrowed the lineup from two engines (2.0T and VR6) to the single 269 hp 2.0T, with no hybrid, PHEV or EV variant.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the Atlas Cross Sport's weakest categories.0.94F
The refreshed 2024 Cross Sport's sole powertrain — 2.0L TSI with the new 8-speed — is EPA-rated 23 MPG combined FWD and 22 MPG with 4Motion, the configuration most buyers take (standard from SEL up). The VR6 dropped at this refresh had been the thirstier option.
A ~4,400 lb two-row crossover on a boosted 2.0L returns 20 MPG city regardless of drivetrain — competitive with V6 rivals, well behind hybrid mid-size SUVs.
26 MPG highway with 4Motion (27 FWD) is respectable for a gas mid-size crossover but short of hybrid rivals like the Santa Fe Hybrid.
An 18.6-gallon tank at 22 MPG combined gives about 409 miles with 4Motion — mid-pack for a two-row mid-size SUV; hybrid rivals clear 500.
At 22 MPG on regular fuel the Cross Sport costs roughly $2,250/yr on the fleet's common fuel-price basis — about $100/yr less than the three-row Atlas but several hundred more than hybrid two-rows. Derived on the same basis as the 2026 scorecard for comparability.
EPA-rated on regular and runs on 87 octane, but VW quotes the full 269 hp / 273 lb-ft on premium — 'premium recommended, not required' band, matching the identical-engined Atlas.
3SafetyThe Atlas Cross Sport's best-graded category.3.16B
The 2024 refresh of the first-generation (2020-onward) Atlas Cross Sport changed styling, interior and powertrain (2.0T only) but not the structure, and it keeps NHTSA's 5-star overall rating.
Earned a 2024 Top Safety Pick (not TSP+) with Good in small overlap driver and passenger, original moderate overlap, and the updated side test. No updated (rear-occupant) moderate overlap result is published for 2024, which is what separates it from the 2025-26 car's TSP+.
With the 2024 refresh IQ.DRIVE became standard on every trim from the base SE: Front Assist AEB with pedestrian/cyclist monitoring, Active Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert, stop-and-go adaptive cruise, Lane Assist and Travel Assist. None of the core five is trim-locked.
The standard Front Assist system rates only Acceptable in IIHS's pedestrian front crash prevention test, which includes nighttime scenarios. That is competent daytime performance with weaker night/pedestrian margins, so it lands in the middle band.
Active Blind Spot Monitor (it steers back as well as warning), Rear Traffic Alert with rear automatic braking, and Exit Warning are all standard. It misses the very top only because no trailer-aware coverage is offered.
Lane Assist and Travel Assist lane centering are standard and they work, but reviewers describe the centering as wandery and the lane-keep intervention as aggressive. That is mid-band behavior.
Full-speed-range ACC with stop-and-go is standard and combines with Travel Assist for hands-on Level 2 highway driving. It loses points for clumsy reactions when a vehicle cuts into the gap ahead.
There is no hands-free system at any trim. Travel Assist is hands-on and uses capacitive steering-wheel sensing.
Both headlight variants are rated Good by IIHS: the SE/SE w/ Technology LED projector + LED reflector high beams, and the SEL-and-up LED projectors with curve-adaptive beams and high-beam assist. Auto high beams are missing on the SE trims, which is the only gap.
The coupe-style roofline shrinks the rear window and thickens the rear pillars compared with the boxy Atlas. The 360-degree Area View camera that would compensate is reserved for the top trim, so the volume trims get average sightlines at best.
IIHS rates the LATCH hardware Marginal: the anchors are hard to reach and hard to use. The wide rear doors and roomy second row help, but the anchors keep it near the bottom of the middle band.
4Space & ComfortGrades below the middle of the scale.1.47D
The Cross Sport is the two-row, five-seat version of the Atlas on the same 117.3-in wheelbase; every 2024 trim seats five.
Published 2024 front headroom is adequate but unremarkable for a mid-size SUV; the panoramic roof on upper trims trims it slightly.
Same front structure as the three-row Atlas; mid-pack for the class.
The sloping roofline costs some second-row headroom versus the boxy Atlas, but six-footers still fit.
The full Atlas wheelbase devoted to two rows gives near-class-leading second-row legroom, the Cross Sport's best space attribute.
No third row — the Cross Sport is the two-row Atlas; buyers needing seven seats must step to the standard Atlas. Scored low per the no-third-row rule.
Large for a five-seater, but the SUV band measures against three-row SUVs with the third row folded, and the sloped hatch costs usable height.
Competitive with two-row rivals, about 19 cu ft short of the three-row Atlas.
Plenty of conventional storage — center bin, door pockets, many cupholders — plus standard wireless charging and 45W USB-C ports, but no standout innovation.
Comfortable, supportive front seats with heating and ventilation standard, and a roomy, well-shaped rear bench for adults on long trips; short of the plushest class leaders.
Testers disagree: some find it smooth and quiet on the highway, others call it brittle over broken pavement and speed bumps, especially on the 20–21-in wheels of upper trims. Lands in the middle band.
Split verdicts: wind noise is well suppressed, but highway road and tire noise draws complaints on some test cars. Mid-pack overall.
Unusually generous for a base trim: ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel are standard across the 2024 Atlas line, heated rear seats move down a trim, and remote start arrives at the volume SE with Technology. Three-zone climate and the panoramic roof are trim-gated.
5Cost of OwnershipGrades below the middle of the scale.1.57D
2024 is the refresh year for the Cross Sport: the VR6 is gone, and every trim now uses the 269 hp 2.0T with an 8-speed automatic. The SE FWD is the entry point, priced a little under the three-row Atlas but above the typical mainstream two-row midsize SUV.
The SE w/Technology is the volume configuration. Over the SE it adds adaptive cruise with Travel Assist, heated front seats, wireless charging, 18-inch wheels and a power liftgate. Most buyers also take the $1,900 4MOTION AWD option.
This is a center-weighted estimate. The 2024 car is mechanically the same as later model years, but it has a year less of inflation in parts and labor. VW dealer labor and parts cost more than Japanese and Korean rivals, and the turbocharged EA888 four adds some known wear items such as the water pump.
Like the Atlas line generally, the Cross Sport depreciates faster than the segment's Toyota and Honda benchmarks. Heavy year-end incentives on 2024 stock also lowered real transaction prices, which weighs on resale.
Volkswagen's New Vehicle Limited Warranty has been 4 yr / 50,000 mi across its US lineup since MY2021. That beats the 3/36 from Honda, Toyota, Ford and GM but falls short of Hyundai and Kia's 5/60.
VW gives powertrain coverage no longer than the bumper-to-bumper term. That is the shortest in the class, against 5/60 from Honda, Toyota, Ford and GM and 10/100 from Hyundai and Kia.
VW Carefree Coverage includes the first two scheduled services (2 yr / 20,000 mi), 3 yr / 36,000 mi roadside assistance, and a Car-Net connected-services trial. It has real value, but the 20,000-mile cap is tight.
$44,415 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (48% retained, or about $21,319) leaves about $23,096 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,400 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $28,496 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the Atlas Cross Sport's weakest categories.1.27D
Consumer Reports rates the 2024 Atlas Cross Sport about average for reliability against other 2024 models, but sources disagree: J.D. Power rates the 2024 Atlas twin only Average (70/100) on quality and reliability, and other outlets summarize both Atlas models as below average. 2024 was also the first year of the refreshed, 2.0T-only car, so it has no track record of its own.
Volkswagen has sat in the bottom third of dependability studies for years. J.D. Power's 2025 Vehicle Dependability Study ranked it last at 285 PP100, and the 2026 study ranked it last again at 301 PP100. Consumer Reports' brand rankings also place it below the middle.
The 2024 model year carries eight NHTSA campaigns, several of them serious: engine failure from damaged connecting-rod bearings, a 177,000-unit engine-cover fire risk, a front passenger airbag that can be deactivated (PODS), brake master cylinder misassembly, and under-torqued chassis, brake and suspension bolts. Three more are rearview-camera campaigns. This is heavy, repeated recall activity for the first year of a refresh.
The 269-hp turbo 2.0-liter belongs to the long-running EA888 family, which commonly reaches 200,000 miles or more with maintenance, though direct-injection carbon buildup remains a wear item. On the 2024 car, however, this powertrain was new to the Atlas. The VR6 and its gearbox were dropped, the 8-speed automatic was newly sourced, and the launch year drew a connecting-rod-bearing engine-failure recall.
The 2024 refresh brought a heavily revised cabin with more soft-touch surfaces, a 12-inch touchscreen, a 10.3-inch digital cluster and standard leatherette, and it looks more upscale than the 2020–2023 interior. Reviewers criticized the capacitive climate and volume sliders, which are unlit at night, and that switchgear undercuts the premium impression.
Owner reviews generally praise panel fit on the Chattanooga-built Cross Sport, and no widespread rattle pattern is reported. Several 2024 recalls trace back to assembly errors, though: a misinstalled engine cover, under-torqued chassis bolts and a misassembled brake master cylinder. Volkswagen's initial-quality standing is also near the bottom.
About 600 US Volkswagen dealers give adequate national coverage, but the footprint is thinner than Toyota's, Honda's or the domestic brands'. The 2024 model's 4-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty beats the mainstream 3/36 norm and offsets a mid-pack service reputation.
Maintenance and repair costs sit near the midsize-SUV average. CarEdge estimates about $8,400 over 10 years with roughly a 24% chance of a major repair. The EA888 has broad aftermarket and independent-shop support, but German componentry and the newly sourced transmission send more work to the dealer than on Japanese rivals.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Atlas Cross Sport's strongest categories.2.55C+
The 2024 refresh made the 12-inch floating touchscreen standard on all trims; mid-pack against rivals with 15–17.7-in screens.
Screen graphics are sharp, but menus are complicated and temperature and volume use unlit touch sliders under the screen plus haptic steering-wheel pads, which reviewers repeatedly criticize.
Wireless App-Connect is standard on every 2024 trim, paired with a standard wireless charging pad.
Voice Control is standard, but testers found it weak without paid connected services, and embedded navigation starts at SEL, above the volume trim. The ChatGPT-backed IDA upgrade came only in later model years.
The base system is basic. The 12-speaker, 400-watt Harman Kardon upgrade is good but limited to the top SEL Premium R-Line.
The configurable 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro is standard on every 2024 trim, with no analog base version.
VW says most model year 2020 and newer vehicles can get over-the-air updates through the myVW app, but it publishes no feature-adding whole-vehicle OTA program for the 2024 Atlas Cross Sport.
myVW and Car-Net cover remote lock/unlock, remote start where equipped, vehicle status and parked location, but remote functions need a subscription and there is no phone-as-key.
Standard 45W USB-C fast-charging ports — laptop-grade rather than a trickle — plus a standard wireless pad on every trim.
Keyless entry and push-button start are standard from the base SE, and the volume SE with Technology adds remote start and a hands-free liftgate; there is no phone-as-key.
A rear camera is standard and front/rear Park Distance Control arrives on mid trims, but the Area View 360° camera and Park Assist are limited to the top SEL Premium R-Line.
A head-up display, new with the 2024 refresh, is standard from SEL upward — available, but one trim above the volume buyer.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.02C
Near class-leading rear legroom, big rear doors and a 40.3 cu ft load bay make kid logistics easy, but IIHS rates LATCH Marginal and there are only two LATCH positions.
2024 TOP SAFETY PICK and NHTSA 5 stars overall, with IQ.DRIVE standard on every trim, held back by Acceptable pedestrian AEB and Marginal LATCH.
Roomy rear seat with its own vents, standard ventilated front seats, plentiful 45W USB-C and luggage room with five aboard, offset by reported highway road noise and no rear entertainment.
Easy and composed in town, with standard stop-and-go adaptive cruise, but the unlit touch sliders, intrusive lane-keep and some low-speed turbo lag add daily friction.
22 MPG combined with 4Motion (23 FWD) is thirsty against hybrid rivals in the class, and VW service and insurance costs add to it.
A ~196-in long, 78-in wide body with a ~40.5 ft turning circle and a small rear window is a handful in tight parking; the base SE has only a rear camera.
A 5,000-lb tow rating with the factory hitch and 77.6 cu ft of flat load space handle light work, but it is a unibody five-seater with a 269-hp four.
The EA888 2.0T is a well-known engine and leatherette wipes clean, but VW's dependability record is below average and the new-for-2024 8-speed had owner shudder reports; warranty is only 4 yr/50,000 mi.
Standard roof rails, an available factory hitch, 45W USB-C and wipe-down leatherette suit light trade use, but there is no bed, no onboard power system and no work upfit program.
Comfortable seats, standard adaptive cruise with Travel Assist and ~409 miles per tank make it a competent tourer, held back by tire and road noise on some cars.
4Motion with Snow/Offroad modes, a 5,000-lb tow rating and roof rails cover gravel roads and light toys, but 6.3 in of ground clearance, no off-road trim and FWD on base trims limit it.
40.3 cu ft seats-up and 77.6 cu ft folded is lots of squared-off space for a two-row, extended by roof rails and the hitch; the sloped tailgate limits tall items.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.04C
Lower and lighter than the three-row Atlas, it drives smaller than its size with decent body control, though reviewers call it blandly agreeable rather than engaging.
Accurate and well weighted, but artificial with little feedback.
Vented front and solid rear discs on a ~4,200–4,400-lb crossover give average stopping. No 2024 instrumented braking data was retrieved.
The 269-hp 2.0T and new 8-speed run 0–60 in about 7.5–7.7 s, quicker than the old VR6, but there is turbo lag in Comfort mode and it feels only adequate for the size.
Quiet at a cruise, but the four-cylinder is audible and coarser than the old V6 under hard acceleration.
The Atlas's 117.3-in wheelbase gives a wide turning circle near the bottom of the mid-size SUV band.
Comfortable, adjustable front seats and a good driving position, undercut by unlit touch sliders, haptic wheel pads and thick rear pillars.
The most engaging Atlas, and quicker than before, but it is competent rather than characterful, with no performance variant (R-Line is appearance only).
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Atlas Cross Sport's strongest categories.2.60C+
The 2024 refresh made a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit, a 12-inch touchscreen, wireless App-Connect, USB-C ports and a broad IQ.DRIVE-style driver-assist suite (forward AEB with pedestrian/cyclist detection, blind-spot, rear cross-traffic) standard across the range. Several rivals hold some of that back for mid trims. The 4 yr / 50,000 mi basic warranty also beats the 3/36 offered by Honda and Nissan.
At $38,410 including destination, it undercuts two-row midsize rivals like the Honda Passport and Nissan Murano. It also matches the segment's stronger outputs (269 hp / 273 lb-ft) and offers about 40 cu ft of cargo space behind the rear seats. Value fades toward the $53K SEL Premium R-Line, and weak residuals take back some of the up-front saving.
Five trims (SE, SE w/Technology, SEL, SEL R-Line, SEL Premium R-Line) span roughly $38K to $53K, with an FWD or 4MOTION choice on the two SE trims. The 2024 refresh dropped the VR6, leaving one engine, one transmission and no electrified option.
US sales rose to 38,872 in 2024 after the refresh, up 11.6% on 2023. That is a healthy result for a two-row derivative, though well behind the three-row Atlas and the segment leaders.
Volkswagen has mainstream recognition and some German-engineering appeal that suits a design-led model, but it is not an aspirational badge in the US. Its reliability reputation trails Toyota and Honda, and soft resale reflects that.
2024 buyers had broad incentives through the model year: a $3,000 customer bonus late in the year, plus 0.9–1.9% APR financing and $500 student and military/first-responder bonuses. The cash and special-APR offers could not be stacked.
MY2024 is the fifth year of the first-generation Cross Sport (launched for 2020), but it received a substantial mid-cycle refresh: new front and rear styling, a heavily revised interior, shift-by-wire and a new powertrain. That makes it current, not cutting-edge, with a redesign still a couple of years away.
Reviewers judge it solid but rarely class-best. They praise the styling, roomy back seat and the refreshed interior, and criticize the infotainment and the step back in refinement from the VR6. Its recognition is a 2024 IIHS Top Safety Pick-level award (sources disagree on TSP vs TSP+) and a 5-star NHTSA rating, with no comparison-test wins.
