The verdict

A struggling compact suv, strong on safety and held back by reliability.

The 2021 ID.4 was Volkswagen's first US electric SUV. It is safe, quiet, roomy in the back seat and remarkably easy to park, and today it costs little to run. It also carries the baggage of a launch year: well-below-average reliability, 11 recalls, laggy early software, a 260-mile best-case range with slow 125 kW charging, and depreciation steep enough to keep only about 37% of its value. As a used buy it can be a comfortable, inexpensive electric commuter, but check that the recall and software work has been done and expect long stops on road trips.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainOne of the ID.4's weakest categories.0.49F
Horsepower
201 hp (single rear motor: 1st Edition / Pro / Pro S RWD); 295 hp dual-motor AWD Pro / AWD Pro S
13/100
#6 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

2021 is the ID.4's US launch year (first generation, MEB). The volume RWD Pro uses the 150 kW (201 hp) rear motor, which is low for a compact SUV. The 295 hp AWD arrived later in the model year.

Torque
228 lb-ft (RWD); 339 lb-ft AWD
26/100
#3 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The single rear motor's 228 lb-ft is modest for the segment. The AWD's 339 lb-ft is competitive, but it isn't the volume configuration.

0–60 mph time
7.6 s (C/D test, RWD 1st Edition, 201 hp); ~5.4 s AWD
32/100
#4 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

In instrumented testing the RWD car is adequate but unhurried. The AWD is far quicker but was a late-2021 addition.

Powertrain refinement76
#3 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Delivery is silent, smooth and lag-free, but the soft throttle map and fading urgency at highway speeds in the 201 hp car leave it behind the Mach-E and Model Y. Launch-year software (pre-3.0 OTA) was also criticised for feeling unpolished.

Transmission behavior80
#2 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The single-speed reduction gear never hunts or shifts. It is held at the low end of the top band because the car offers only D (coast) and B (mild regen), with no one-pedal mode or adjustable regen paddles.

Max towing capacity
2,700 lbs (AWD with factory tow hitch); RWD not tow-rated in the US
24/100
#2 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The 2,700 lb maximum applies only to the AWD with the hitch and sits low in the SUV band.

AWD/4WD availability62
#13 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Dual-motor AWD was offered on both 2021 trim grades (AWD Pro, AWD Pro S), but it reached buyers only late in the model year; the 1st Edition and early cars were RWD-only. It is a simple on-demand front asynchronous motor with a Traction mode and no terrain programs.

Off-road capability38
#4 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

About 8 inches of ground clearance and a Traction mode on AWD cover gravel and snow. There is no off-road trim, skid protection or lockers, so it is pavement-oriented.

Powertrain lineup breadth32
#8 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The nameplate is EV-only with a single 82 kWh battery. The only choice is a 201 hp RWD or a 295 hp AWD, which arrived late, and there is no hybrid, combustion or performance alternative.

2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.95C-
Combined fuel economy
99 MPGe combined (Pro RWD); 97 1st Edition / Pro S / AWD Pro; 93 AWD Pro S
100/100
#1 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

99 MPGe for the volume Pro is mid-to-low for an EV SUV. The launch-year car is less efficient than the 2022 (107 MPGe), which received software updates.

City fuel economy
107 MPGe city (Pro RWD); 98–104 other trims
100/100
#1 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

City is the ID.4's best cycle, but 107 MPGe is below average for an EV SUV.

Highway fuel economy
91 MPGe highway (Pro RWD); 88–90 other trims
100/100
#1 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

91 MPGe highway is middling for a tall compact crossover EV.

Driving range
260 mi (Pro RWD, 82 kWh); 250 mi 1st Edition / Pro S; 249 mi AWD Pro; 240 mi AWD Pro S
0/100
#15 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

260 miles for the volume Pro is in the lower part of the EV-SUV band; the 2022 update raised it to 275 mi.

DC fast-charge peak rate
125 kW peak (CCS1, 82 kWh)
22/100
#4 of 5 SUVsCompare all →

125 kW was the 2021 launch peak, modest next to Ioniq 5/EV6 (230+ kW) and the Model Y. VW raised it to 135 kW for 2022.

10–80% fast-charge time
~38 min 5–80% (VW claim, 125 kW)
25/100
#3 of 5 SUVsCompare all →

VW quotes 5–80% in 'just under 40 minutes' (about 38) rather than a 10–80% figure; 10–80% would be slightly shorter. That is roughly twice the 800 V benchmark.

Estimated annual fuel cost
$750/yr (Pro RWD, EPA 15,000 mi); $800 other trims
100/100
#1 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

This is EPA's own energy-cost figure; it sits low in the cost band but above the most efficient EV SUVs.

Fuel requirements85
#15 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

No fuel grade to buy, an 11 kW onboard charger for an overnight Level 2 fill (~7.5 h), and three years of free Electrify America charging. It is held below the top because the car is CCS-only, with no Supercharger access and no Plug&Charge in 2021.

3SafetyThe ID.4's best-graded category.3.50A-
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (5★ frontal, 5★ side, 4★ rollover)
100/100
#1 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA tested the 2021 launch-year ID.4, the first model year of the first generation, and rated it five stars overall: five stars frontal, five stars side, four stars rollover.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness90
#1 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The 2021 ID.4 earned IIHS Top Safety Pick+ with Good ratings in every crashworthiness test, including both small-overlap tests and the updated side test.

Standard ADAS suite breadth88
#1 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

IQ.DRIVE is standard on every 2021 ID.4 (1st Edition, Pro, Pro S and the AWD Pro/Pro S added mid-year). It includes Front Assist AEB with pedestrian monitoring, ACC with stop-and-go, Lane Assist with Travel Assist, Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert and Emergency Assist, so none of the core features is limited to a higher trim.

Automatic emergency braking performance74
#10 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rated Front Assist Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle and Advanced for daytime pedestrians, but only Basic for nighttime pedestrian detection. Strong daytime results with a weaker night result put it in the middle band.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage80
#1 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert come standard on every trim. The blind-spot system warns the driver but does not steer the car back, so it sits right at the edge of the top band.

Lane keeping & centering78
#2 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Standard Travel Assist lane centering is generally steady on well-marked highways, with the usual wander on faded lines or tight curves. The capacitive steering wheel senses hands without needing steering pressure, which cuts down on nag alerts.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist80
#2 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Full-speed-range ACC with stop-and-go works together with lane centering as Travel Assist. Driver-initiated assisted lane change only arrived for 2023, and early 2021 software was rougher before OTA updates.

Hands-free driving availability15
#2 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The 2021 ID.4 has no hands-free highway driving mode; Travel Assist is a hands-on Level 2 system.

Headlight performance70
#4 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The curve-adaptive LED projector headlights on the Pro S rate Good, while the volume Pro's LED reflector headlights rate Acceptable, so the better lights are limited to upper trims.

Outward visibility70
#6 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The upright glasshouse and low cowl give good forward and side views, but thick rear pillars and a small rear window limit the view behind. The 360-degree Area View camera is only on upper trims.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability80
#5 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates the LATCH hardware Good, and the flat rear floor and wide rear doors make car seats easy to fit. Only two positions have full LATCH hardware; the center seat has a tether anchor only.

4Space & ComfortOne of the ID.4's weakest categories.1.19D
Seating capacity
5 seats (two rows, all trims)
25/100
#1 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Two-row, five-seat compact crossover; no third-row option on any 2021 trim.

Front headroom
41.1 in
82/100
#2 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Generous front headroom for a compact SUV thanks to the flat-floor MEB packaging.

Front legroom
41.1 in
24/100
#9 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Front legroom is merely adequate against compact-SUV rivals.

Rear headroom
38.4 in
60/100
#14 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Above-average rear headroom for the class.

Rear legroom
37.6 in
63/100
#16 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The long MEB wheelbase and flat floor give competitive rear legroom with no center tunnel.

Third-row usability5
#11 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Two-row SUV with no third row offered on any trim.

Cargo/trunk volume
30.3 cu ft behind 2nd row
10/100
#8 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Class-competitive for a compact crossover but low against the full SUV band; no front trunk.

Max cargo volume
64.2 cu ft (rear seats folded)
20/100
#8 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Seats-folded volume is mid-pack among compact crossovers and trails the RAV4/CR-V.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions62
#5 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Flat floor, a large center console with sliding/removable bins and a wireless charging pad are good, but there is no frunk and the two-level cargo floor is modest.

Seat comfort66
#8 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Front seats are comfortable and supportive; rear bench is roomy, though the base Pro has only 6-way manual front seats (power/massage on Pro S).

Ride quality68
#7 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Soft, comfort-oriented tuning absorbs bumps well, though reviewers note some pronounced vertical body motion over undulations.

Cabin quietness72
#3 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Silent powertrain and generally low wind noise; some road noise on coarse surfaces keeps it short of library-quiet.

Climate & comfort features70
#1 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Heated front seats, heated steering wheel and app-based remote preconditioning are standard; power massage driver's seat and panoramic roof are reserved for Pro S, and ventilated seats are not offered.

5Cost of OwnershipGrades below the middle of the scale.1.33D
Base MSRP
$41,190 (ID.4 Pro RWD 82 kWh, $39,995 + $1,195 destination); AWD Pro S tops out at $49,370
60/100
#15 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

In 2021, the launch year, the US lineup came only with the 82 kWh battery and started at the Pro RWD. The cheaper 62 kWh Standard trim didn't arrive until MY2023.

Volume-Trim Price
$45,690 (Pro S RWD, $44,495 + $1,195 destination); Pro RWD $41,190, AWD Pro S $49,370, sold-out 1st Edition $45,190
54/100
#15 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The Pro S RWD is taken as the typically equipped configuration. The limited-run 1st Edition ($43,995 + destination, a Pro S/Gradient-based RWD car) sold out on launch day, so it isn't representative.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$5,000 over 5 years (light EV service schedule plus allowance for 12V, software and recall repairs on launch-year builds)
69/100
#5 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Scheduled EV service is light, and the first 2 years/20k miles are covered by Carefree Maintenance. The launch-year Zwickau-built cars carried the most 12V-battery, software (pre-ME3 OTA) and recall issues of the generation, so this figure adds a repair allowance on top of the scheduled-service figure, slightly more than for MY2022.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~37% of MSRP after ~5 years (Edmunds 2021 appraisal $9,876–$21,231 against $41.2K–$49.4K new)
0/100
#15 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

It is among the steepest-depreciating SUVs. A launch-year car bought before the $7,500 credit expired, then hit by the 2023–2024 EV price war and newer 2024+ hardware, retains below the floor of the SUV band.

Basic warranty
4 years / 50,000 miles bumper-to-bumper
50/100
#4 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

VW's New Vehicle Limited Warranty is longer than the 3/36 norm but shorter than Hyundai and Kia's 5/60.

Powertrain warranty
8 years / 100,000 miles high-voltage battery; drive unit under the 4-yr/50,000-mi basic warranty
60/100
#4 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

This is the industry-standard EV battery term. VW offers no 10-year EV drivetrain coverage like Hyundai and Kia.

Complimentary maintenance & perks80
#2 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The launch package was generous. Every 2021 buyer got three years of unlimited 30-minute Electrify America DC fast-charging sessions, Carefree Maintenance for 2 years/20,000 miles (transferable), and roadside assistance for the warranty term. That beat Ford's, Tesla's and Toyota's ownership perks at the time.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$33,785 (≈$28,785 depreciation + $5,000 maintenance)
42/100
#15 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

$45,690 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (37% retained, or about $16,905) leaves about $28,785 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $33,785 in total.

6Reliability & QualityThe ID.4's lowest-graded category.0.45F
Predicted reliability24
#15 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Consumer Reports rates the launch-year 2021 ID.4 well below average. Battery and charging faults, electrical problems and infotainment software (black or frozen screens, spurious warnings) are the main complaints. As the first model year it also shipped with early ID. software that needed dealer reflashes before OTA updates were available, so it sits at the bottom of the 2021–2023 range.

Brand reliability track record40
#15 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Volkswagen has sat in the bottom third of Consumer Reports brand rankings and below the industry average in J.D. Power VDS for several years. Electronics and infotainment drive most of the complaints.

Recall & TSB history30
#14 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

MY2021 has 11 NHTSA campaigns, the most of the original-pack years. They include two high-voltage battery recalls: one for faulty soldering inside the pack and one for software that can restart the battery management module or shut down the inverter, which can cause loss of drive power. They also cover doors that can open because water reaches the handle electronics, recurring display software faults, and several assembly defects in occupant-protection parts. Widespread TSBs for 12V battery drain and infotainment add to the record.

Powertrain durability reputation42
#13 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

MY2021 uses the first MEB powertrain: an APP310 rear motor (201 hp) with the 82 kWh (77 kWh usable) LG pack. Drive units rarely fail outright, but this launch year needed two HV-battery recalls (pack soldering and BMS/inverter software that can cut drive power). CR names charging and battery as the main trouble area, and 12V no-start faults are common, so it scores below the 2022 car.

Interior material quality48
#13 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

This is the original ID.4 cabin: hard plastics on the doors and lower dash, unlit capacitive temperature and volume sliders, and the slow 10-/12-inch infotainment. Reviewers called it cheap-feeling for the price.

Fit & finish44
#15 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The launch-year cars were imported from Zwickau, Germany, and had several assembly-error recalls. These included wrongly folded passenger airbags, incorrect rear seat belts, capped headlight aim adjusters and a mis-assembled steering gear, on top of the out-of-spec door handles. Owners also report scattered trim rattles and software-related initial-quality complaints.

Dealer & service network50
#16 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Volkswagen's roughly 600–650 US dealers cover metro areas adequately but are thinner in rural areas than Toyota or Chevrolet. EV competence varied widely by dealer in 2021, and owners reported long waits for software and recall repairs.

Parts availability & repair cost44
#16 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

ID.4-specific parts (HV modules, drive unit, door handles, head unit) are effectively dealer-only, with little aftermarket support, and out-of-warranty high-voltage repairs are costly. Routine EV maintenance is cheap, which partly offsets this.

7Technology & InfotainmentGrades below the middle of the scale.1.51D

Infotainment UX & responsiveness35
#16 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Launch-year ID software was widely panned as laggy and buggy, with capacitive sliders and buried menus forcing eyes off the road; no physical climate or volume controls.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto88
#2 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Wireless App-Connect (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) is standard on every 2021 trim.

Voice control & native navigation60

US 2021 cars shipped without working OTA; the ID.Software 3.x fix required a dealer visit (2022), after which limited OTA updates became possible.

Companion app & remote functions62
#6 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Car-Net app covers remote lock, charge control and remote preconditioning, but connectivity has been unreliable and there is no digital key.

Kid & car-seat practicality72
#4 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Flat rear floor, wide-opening rear doors and good rear legroom make car-seat duty easy; cargo space is adequate for a stroller.

Family safety package88
#1 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and NHTSA 5-star overall, with IQ.DRIVE (AEB, blind spot, rear traffic alert, Travel Assist) standard on every trim.

Family road-trip comfort62
#8 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Roomy, quiet cabin with rear vents and USB-C, but 250-ish miles of range and 125 kW charging lengthen family trips; luggage space is average.

Daily driving ease74
#4 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Smooth, silent and easy in traffic with standard ACC Stop and Go, but grabby brake pedal and lack of true one-pedal driving detract.

Commuting cost efficiency80
#3 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Electricity at ~34 kWh/100 mi makes per-mile costs very low, plus 3 years of free Electrify America charging at launch.

Parking & maneuverability80
#1 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Rear-drive packaging gives the RWD ID.4 an exceptionally tight 33.6 ft turning circle; rear three-quarter view is restricted.

Work capability30
#8 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

RWD volume trims are not tow-rated in the US; only AWD tows 2,700 lbs, and range drops sharply under load.

Durability for work duty42
#11 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Simple EV drivetrain, but first-year software/12V issues and no fleet track record make it unproven for hard use.

Jobsite & upfit practicality28
#11 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

No onboard AC power or V2L, basic cargo tie-downs; roof rails and a hitch on AWD are the only provisions.

Long-distance comfort & range60
#10 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

Comfortable, quiet highway cruiser with standard Travel Assist, but 91 MPGe highway efficiency, ~250 mi range and 125 kW charging mean frequent long stops.

Outdoor & adventure capability52
#8 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

AWD and ~8 in ground clearance handle gravel roads; roof rails and AWD towing help, but the volume RWD trim is pavement-oriented with no AC outlet.

Gear & luggage flexibility60
#6 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

60/40 folding rear seat with pass-through and adjustable cargo floor; 64.2 cu ft max is average and the RWD has no hitch.

Every 2021 ID.4 Pro comes with IQ.DRIVE (Travel Assist, adaptive cruise, lane keeping), a digital cockpit, wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel. The Pro S adds the panoramic roof, the larger 12-inch screen, power seats and an upgraded lighting package. That is competitive with the Mach-E, though base Pro buyers miss features found on the Pro S.

Feature value per dollar68
#8 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

In 2021 the ID.4 undercut the Model Y and Mach-E for about 250–260 miles of range and a roomy cabin. The full $7,500 federal credit applied (pre-IRA), which brought the effective Pro price into the low $30Ks before state incentives. The slow 201 hp RWD powertrain and immature software temper the value.

Trim & configuration breadth60
#11 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

There were four configurations (Pro and Pro S, each in RWD or AWD, with AWD arriving mid-year) plus a sold-out 1st Edition. All used the single 82 kWh battery, spanning about $41.2K–$49.4K, with no lower-priced battery option.

Sales popularity & market acceptance60
#11 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

It reached 16,742 US sales in its first year, supply-limited because cars were imported from Germany. That made it a credible non-Tesla EV but well behind the Model Y and around the Mach-E's 27K.

Brand desirability & image58
#10 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

VW is a familiar mainstream brand with no US EV halo to match Tesla's, and Dieselgate still colored its image. Launch-year software bugs and recalls, along with weak residuals, have dented perception.

Deals & incentive availability62
#3 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

The full $7,500 federal tax credit applied to every 2021 ID.4 (pre-IRA), alongside state rebates and VW Credit lease offers. Supply constraints from the second half of 2021 meant few factory cash discounts, and some dealers charged markups.

Model freshness82
#5 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

This is the first model year of an all-new generation on the dedicated MEB EV platform. As a launch-year car, though, its software (pre-3.x) and 125 kW charging were quickly superseded by OTA updates, and the MY2024 hardware brought the APP 550 drive and new infotainment.

Critical reception & awards68
#6 of 16 Compact SUVsCompare all →

It won 2021 World Car of the Year and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, and was well reviewed for space, ride and comfort. Reviewers faulted the laggy infotainment, the touch-slider controls and the modest acceleration, and it generally trailed the Mach-E and Model Y in 2021 comparisons.
