The verdict
A struggling compact suv, strong on safety and held back by reliability.
The 2025 ID.4 is a calm, comfortable and cheap-to-run electric SUV. It has a five-star NHTSA rating, a full driver-assist suite on every trim, 113 MPGe and a 291-mile range on the volume rear-drive car. It is let down by slow-for-2025 charging, a small cargo hold, a battery fire-risk recall and the steepest depreciation in its class, at roughly 37% of its value left after five years. VW is ending US production, and the $12,500 clearance bonus makes it a strong buy at a deep discount. At full sticker it is hard to recommend.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainGrades below the middle of the scale.1.48D
2025 is a carry-over year for the first-generation ID.4 (launched 2021) and keeps the APP 550 rear motor introduced for MY2024: 210 kW (282 hp) on the volume RWD Pro/Pro S, 335 hp with the AWD front motor. Output is mid-pack for a compact electric SUV.
The APP 550 rear motor makes 545 Nm (402 lb-ft) from rest, a strong figure for the segment that gives the ID.4 good low-speed response even though peak horsepower is unremarkable.
Instrumented tests of the 282 hp RWD car land at about six seconds. That is brisk in absolute terms but behind dual-motor rivals.
Single-motor EV delivery is silent, lag-free and linear, and the APP 550 motor gives real mid-range urgency that the 201 hp pre-2024 car lacked. It sits just below the Ioniq 5, EV6 and Model Y because the throttle mapping is deliberately soft off the line.
The single-speed reduction gear means there is nothing to hunt or shift. It scores a few points below the Korean rivals because B mode gives only mild regen, with no true one-pedal driving or paddle-adjustable regen levels.
The maximum rating across configurations is 2,700 lbs with the AWD hitch. That beats an Ioniq 5 or EV6 at 2,300 lbs but trails a Model Y at 3,500 lbs, and it is modest against the SUV band.
Dual-motor AWD is offered at every 82 kWh trim level (AWD Pro, AWD Pro S, AWD Pro S Plus), not just at the top. The system is a simple on-demand front motor with no low range or terrain programs.
The ID.4 is pavement-oriented with modest ground clearance. It has no off-road trim, no underbody protection beyond the battery tray, no locking differential and only a Traction drive mode.
The ID.4 is EV-only, but 2025 still offers two batteries (62 kWh Limited/S, 82 kWh Pro range) and RWD or AWD. That is a little broader than the 82 kWh-only 2026, but there is no performance variant or hybrid/gas alternative.
2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.51C+
EPA rates the volume 82 kWh rear-drive car at 113 MPGe combined (about 30 kWh/100 mi), which is solid mid-pack among EV SUVs.
City is the strongest cycle, as with every EV, because of regenerative braking and no idle draw.
104 MPGe sits high in the EV-SUV highway band, and the city-to-highway gap is narrower than most rivals manage.
291 miles is mid-band for an EV SUV. AWD trims drop to 263 miles, and the 62 kWh entry car manages only 206 miles.
The 82 kWh pack on the volume trims peaks at 175 kW on a 400-volt architecture, well below the 230–350 kW of 800-volt E-GMP rivals.
The 82 kWh car charges 10–80% in about 28 minutes, competitive for its peak rate thanks to a flat charging curve but well behind the 18–20 minute 800-volt benchmark.
This is EPA's published figure and sits near the bottom of the EV-SUV energy-cost band.
There is no fuel grade to buy. The car has an 11 kW onboard AC charger for overnight Level 2 charging, CCS DC fast charging and an Electrify America Pass+ allowance at purchase. It scores below the 2026 car because MY2025 owners must buy the NACS DC adapter for Supercharger access, which is standard from MY2026.
3SafetyThe ID.4's best-graded category.3.10B
The 2025 ID.4 carries NHTSA's top five-star overall rating, with five stars in frontal and side crash and four in rollover.
Tested crashworthiness is all Good (small overlap driver/passenger, updated side test), but the 2025 model was not run through the updated moderate overlap test and earned no 2025 award; pedestrian AEB is only Acceptable. The 2024 model earned a Top Safety Pick and the 2021 a TSP+ under older criteria.
IQ.DRIVE is standard on every 2025 ID.4 trim, bundling AEB with pedestrian monitoring, adaptive cruise with stop-and-go, Lane Assist, Travel Assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear traffic alert and rear automatic braking.
IIHS rates the standard pedestrian front crash prevention only Acceptable under its current day/night protocol, below the Superior/Advanced results class leaders post; earlier vehicle-to-vehicle results for this generation were Superior.
Blind-spot monitoring and rear traffic alert are standard on all trims, and rear automatic braking adds intervention; Exit Warning is included on the ID.4. No trailer-aware coverage, which is minor for this vehicle.
Lane Assist and Travel Assist lane centering are standard; reviewers find centering generally steady but it needs capacitive-wheel hands-on confirmation and can be less polished on curves than the best systems.
Full-speed-range ACC with stop-and-go is standard and paired with Travel Assist for combined highway assist; capable and smooth, with predictive speed adaptation on navigation-equipped trims, but hands-on only and without the polish of the leaders.
No hands-free highway driving system is offered on the 2025 ID.4; Travel Assist requires hands on the wheel.
LED projector headlights with curve-adaptive function on the S/Pro S/Pro S Plus trims rate Good, but the base Standard/Pro reflector lights rate only Acceptable; high-beam assist is standard across the range.
Upright greenhouse and low cowl give good forward sightlines, though thick rear pillars and a small rear window limit the over-shoulder view; a 360-degree Area View camera is available on upper trims.
IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Good, with two full LATCH positions plus a center tether, and the long EV wheelbase gives a roomy rear seat with wide door openings.
4Space & ComfortOne of the ID.4's weakest categories.1.29D
Every 2025 ID.4 trim is a two-row, five-seat crossover, and no third row is offered.
Front headroom is generous for the compact class, helped by the tall MEB packaging. The panoramic roof standard on Pro S costs about half an inch.
Front legroom is adequate but below the SUV band midpoint. The flat floor and console layout keep the space feeling open.
Second-row headroom is good for a compact crossover. Published figures vary from 37.9 to 38.4 in depending on the roof, so the midpoint is used.
The 108.9 in wheelbase and flat EV floor give rear legroom that is roomy for the compact class and close to mid-size.
The ID.4 is a two-row SUV with no third row on any trim.
Cargo space is competitive with compact EV rivals such as the Ioniq 5 (27.2) but trails a RAV4 or CR-V, and it scores low against the wide SUV band. There is no front trunk.
Maximum cargo volume is adequate for a compact crossover but well short of class leaders around 70+ cu ft.
The open, flat floor allows a large center console with sliding storage and a wireless charging tray, and the load floor has a two-level cargo floor. There is no frunk and no onboard AC power outlet.
The volume Pro S gets 12-way power, heated and ventilated front seats with massage, and reviewers find them comfortable over long drives. Rear-seat comfort is good but the cushion is low-ish because of the battery floor.
The ID.4 is tuned for comfort and is widely described as soft and compliant over bumps for an EV. Larger 20–21 in wheels on upper trims add some impact harshness.
There is no powertrain noise and road noise is well suppressed. Some wind noise around the mirrors at highway speed keeps it below luxury-class quiet.
Heated front seats and a heated wheel are widely fitted, and ventilated front seats are now standard even on the 62 kWh S. Pre-conditioning works via the app, and heated rear seats are available. Climate controls still use touch sliders rather than knobs.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the ID.4's weakest categories.1.00D
VW dropped the 62 kWh entry car from the initial 2025 lineup, so the ID.4 started at the 82 kWh Pro RWD — about $5,400 higher than the 2024 entry price.
Pro S — the 82 kWh car with panoramic roof, navigation and KESSY — is treated as the volume configuration; it sits in the low-$50Ks with destination.
No oil changes and minimal scheduled service keep routine costs very low; CarEdge's $1,630 maintenance projection is adjusted upward for the ID.4's documented 12V/software/door-handle issues and VW dealer labor once the 4-yr/50k basic warranty lapses.
The ID.4 depreciates among the fastest vehicles in the US; heavy new-car discounting (including a $12,500 clearance bonus as VW ends US production) further presses used values, placing it below the bottom of the SUV band.
VW's New Vehicle Limited Warranty is 4 yr/50,000 mi — better than the 3/36 norm, short of Hyundai/Kia's 5/60.
The 8-yr/100k-mile battery warranty is the federal floor; there is no longer-term powertrain coverage on the motors, unlike Hyundai/Kia's 10-year EV terms.
2 years/20,000 miles of Carefree scheduled maintenance, roadside assistance with the basic warranty, and a three-year Electrify America Pass+ membership with 500 kWh of charging; 2025 first owners also got a $100 rebate toward VW's $200 NACS adapter. Good but behind Hyundai's 3-yr maintenance plus charging bundle.
$51,620 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (37% retained, or about $19,099) leaves about $32,521 in depreciation. Add the projected $3,200 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $35,721 in total.
6Reliability & QualityThe ID.4's lowest-graded category.0.89F
Signals are mixed but lean below average: Consumer Reports' 2025 model page labels the car 'about average' with no year-specific owner data yet, while CR's numeric predicted-reliability score for the ID.4 was reported at 29/100 and it has been named among the least reliable vehicles over battery and charging complaints. The 2025 model is a carry-over year on the first-generation MEB platform, so the generation's record still applies.
Volkswagen has been in the bottom third of Consumer Reports brand-reliability rankings and below the industry average in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study for several years running, with complaints concentrated in electronics and infotainment.
This generation's recalls are severe and repeated. 2025 models are directly included in a high-voltage battery overheating/fire-risk recall, and the generation also carried the door-handle water-ingress recall, where doors could unlatch in motion and which led to a stop-sale and a production halt. On top of that come a long run of 12V and software service actions.
The APP550 rear motor, standard since MY2024, has shown no systemic mechanical failure pattern. However, the 2025 car's high-voltage battery is the subject of an overheating/fire recall that can require a pack replacement, and CR owner complaints focus on the EV battery and charging. That keeps this item at the bottom of the mid band.
Reviewers keep flagging hard, hollow-feeling plastics on the doors and lower dash and switchgear that feels cheap for the price. The touch-slider controls are still a complaint after the 2024 backlighting update. The cabin is adequate but trails the Ioniq 5 and EV6 at similar money.
Physical assembly of the Chattanooga-built ID.4 is generally consistent, and panel fit draws few complaints. However, initial quality is pulled down by electronics defects, and the door-handle water ingress was a sealing defect rather than a software fault.
Volkswagen's roughly 600-650 US dealers give reasonable metro coverage but leave rural gaps. EV service capability varies from store to store, and the door-handle and battery recalls exposed long waits for parts and appointments.
ID.4-specific parts are effectively dealer-only, with little aftermarket support, and high-voltage repairs are expensive. Recall parts backlogs showed that availability is not dependable. Cheap routine EV maintenance partly offsets this.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the ID.4's strongest categories.2.64C+
For 2025 the 12.9-inch center screen, optional in 2024, became standard across the lineup.
The MY2024 ID software 4.0 update fixed most of the early lag and added a permanent climate bar and illuminated sliders, so the system is now usable. Reviewers still criticize the touch-heavy controls and capacitive steering-wheel buttons.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (VW App-Connect) are standard on every 2025 trim.
Built-in navigation and the natural-language 'Hello ID' voice assistant are standard, and the Pro S Plus adds AR navigation cues. Navigation does not plan charging stops as well as Tesla or Hyundai, so most owners use phone projection.
A seven-speaker base system is adequate. A Harman Kardon premium system is available but only on the top Pro S Plus trim.
A digital display is standard but small at 5.3 inches and only minimally configurable. The AR head-up display on the Pro S Plus partly compensates.
MEB vehicles support over-the-air software updates, but VW's US cadence has been slow. Major upgrades such as software 3.x/4.0 historically required dealer visits or arrived only with new model years.
The myVW app covers remote climate, charge scheduling, lock/unlock and vehicle location, and Plug & Charge works with Electrify America. There is no phone-as-key, and app reliability has drawn complaints.
Wireless phone charging and USB-C ports in both rows are standard, but there is no 120V outlet or vehicle-to-load capability.
Keyless access and push-to-drive are standard, and remote climate works via the app. The hands-free Easy Open power liftgate comes on the Pro S and up. There is no phone-as-key.
A rearview camera, parking sensors and rear automatic braking are widely fitted. The Area View 360-degree camera is reserved for the top Pro S Plus.
An augmented-reality head-up display is offered, which is rare in the segment, but only on the top Pro S Plus trim.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.19C
Wide rear door openings, a flat rear floor, 37.6 in rear legroom and good LATCH access make daily kid duty easy. The 30.3 cu ft cargo hold fits a stroller but leaves little room for more.
NHTSA rates it 5 stars overall, and the full IQ.DRIVE suite (AEB with pedestrian detection, blind spot, Travel Assist, rear AEB) is standard on every trim. It loses points because the 2025 model was not an IIHS Top Safety Pick and base-trim headlights rate only Acceptable.
The comfortable ride, quiet cabin, roomy rear seat and rear USB-C ports suit long trips. Cargo space with all seats occupied is merely average, and the 291-mile range with a 175 kW peak means fairly frequent charging stops.
Smooth, silent EV delivery, a soft ride and a light, tight-turning chassis make it an easy daily driver. B-mode regen is mild with no true one-pedal driving, and the touch controls can distract.
At 113 MPGe combined and about $650 a year in energy, home-charged commuting is very cheap, with minimal maintenance beyond tires and cabin filters.
The rear-motor layout allows big front-wheel steering angles and a 33.5 ft turning circle, tighter than most compact sedans. The car is 180.5 in long, but thick D-pillars hurt rear visibility and the 360 camera comes only on the top trim.
Towing tops out at 2,700 lbs on the AWD with hitch (about 2,200 RWD), and towing sharply cuts range. Cargo space is modest, so this is not a work vehicle.
The EV drivetrain has few wear items, but the ID.4 has a record of software glitches and 12V-battery issues, and it has no fleet-duty reputation.
There is no onboard AC power or V2L, only basic cargo tie-downs, and the upfit ecosystem is limited to roof rails and a hitch.
A comfortable ride, quiet cabin, massage seats on the Pro S and standard Travel Assist make it a pleasant tourer. The 291-mile EPA range is real-world highway limited and the 175 kW / ~28 min 10–80% charging trails 800V rivals.
AWD is available on every 82 kWh trim and gravel roads and bike racks are fine. Modest ground clearance, no off-road modes, no V2L for camping and limited tow capacity keep it mostly on pavement.
The 60/40 split rear seats with pass-through, an adjustable-height cargo floor, roof rails and an available hitch help, but 64.2 cu ft maximum and no frunk make bulky gear a squeeze.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the ID.4's strongest categories.2.90B-
The low battery mass and rear-drive balance make it secure and predictable, and the softer comfort tuning lets the body roll more than in an EV6 or Model Y. It is composed but not sporty.
The steering is accurate and the car turns in eagerly thanks to the rear-motor layout, but it is light and offers little feedback.
Regen and friction braking blend smoothly with a natural pedal, and stops are competitive for the weight. Rear drum brakes and only mild regen with no one-pedal mode draw criticism.
The APP 550 rear motor (282 hp, 402 lb-ft) is seamless and gives the ID.4 the mid-range punch it once lacked. The accelerator is soft at tip-in but otherwise well calibrated.
The single electric motor is near-silent with no vibration through the controls, and only faint whine under hard acceleration.
With no front driveshafts on the RWD volume configuration, the front wheels can turn very sharply, giving one of the tightest turning circles in the class.
The seating position is high and comfortable with easy entry and good forward sightlines. Capacitive wheel controls, combined window switches (two switches with a 'rear' toggle) and the stalk-mounted drive selector are ergonomic quirks.
The 282 hp update made it brisker and more pleasant, but the ID.4 remains a comfort-oriented appliance rather than an enthusiast pick next to the EV6 or Mustang Mach-E.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.08C
Every 2025 ID.4 carries the 82 kWh pack at launch, IQ.DRIVE driver assists, the 12.9-inch touchscreen, heated front seats and steering wheel, LED lighting and a heat pump-capable charging setup; navigation, KESSY, 360 camera and AR HUD wait for Pro S/Pro S Plus, and the small 5.3-inch cluster is the only gauge display.
At sticker, ~$51,600 for a Pro S RWD buys 282 hp and the 82 kWh pack but a 400-volt platform and weak resale, while Ioniq 5/EV6 offer more tech for similar money. The 2025 car was eligible for the $7,500 federal credit until it expired 30 Sept 2025, and steep discounts narrow the gap — fair value, not a bargain at MSRP.
Five launch configurations (Pro, Pro S in RWD/AWD, Pro S Plus AWD) span roughly $46.5K–$58.7K, but the cheaper 62 kWh Standard was missing at launch, every car shares one battery size, and there is no performance variant.
US sales rebounded 31% to 22,373 in 2025 but remain well below the 2023 peak of 37,789, were extremely erratic (1,992 in Q2, 248 in all of Q4 after the credit expired), and VW has announced the end of US ID.4 production.
Volkswagen is a neutral mainstream brand in the US — recognisable with some European cachet, but no aspirational halo and a below-average reliability reputation; marque-level, scored in line with other VWs.
Buyer benefit is exceptional: the 2025 ID.4 qualified for the $7,500 federal credit (often passed through on leases) until 30 Sept 2025, and VW has since run a $12,500 customer bonus on 2025 ID.4s as it clears inventory — though these are clearance-driven discounts on a discontinued car.
2025 is the fifth US model year of the 2021-launched first-generation MEB car, a carry-over from the MY2024 update (APP 550 motor, 12.9-inch screen), on a 400-volt architecture with rear drums — and US production is ending, leaving buyers with an orphaned model rather than a mid-cycle one.
Reviewers praise ride comfort, quietness and space but consistently criticise the touch-sliders, small cluster and dated charging speed; the 2021 World Car of the Year win is stale and it rarely wins EV comparison tests against Ioniq 5, EV6 or Model Y.
