The verdict
A struggling subcompact suv, strong on efficiency and held back by performance.
The refreshed 2025 Taos is one of the roomiest, best-equipped subcompact SUVs for the money. It starts at $26,420 delivered, gets 31 MPG combined on regular gas, and has rear-seat room close to a compact SUV, plus VW's full IQ.DRIVE assist suite on every trim. A new 8-speed automatic replaces the jerky dual-clutch on AWD models and makes it a smoother daily driver. The downsides: it can't tow, its crash-avoidance test results are weak, its warranty is short, and VW's reliability record is poor. It suits budget-minded commuters and small families more than anyone who keeps a car for a long time.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Back-seat and cargo room near compact-SUV size
- Good gas mileage on regular fuel
- Full driver-assist suite on every trim
What holds it back
- Modest power, one powertrain, no towing
- Weak crash and collision-avoidance test results
- Below-average reliability record

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Taos's lowest-graded category.0.00F
2025 is the mid-cycle refresh year: the 1.5-liter EA211 evo2 turbo four gained revised piston rings and injectors, a modified turbo housing and a larger intercooler, lifting output from 158 to 174 hp. It is the only engine on every trim.
Peak torque stayed at 184 lb-ft through the 2025 refresh; it arrives low in the rev range, which helps around-town response more than the figure suggests.
Published 2025 figures span 7.4 s (manufacturer-sourced, 4Motion) to 8.9 s (MotorTrend instrumented SEL 4Motion); an 8.0 s figure for the volume FWD configuration sits in the middle of that spread and is the defensible representative value.
The refreshed 1.5T is smooth and essentially lag-free off the line thanks to its low torque peak, but it runs out of breath at highway speed, making passes and merges feel strained. Refined in daily use, short on reserve.
For 2025 the 4Motion models dropped the balky 7-speed DSG for the conventional 8-speed automatic, now standard across the lineup. Reviewers call it a clear upgrade with quick, smooth shifts and clean low-speed manners; held below the top band for economy-biased shift logic.
Volkswagen publishes no US tow rating for the Taos and offers no factory hitch; towing is not recommended. Buyers who need to tow are pointed to the Tiguan or Atlas.
4Motion AWD is a $1,700 option on S, SE and SE Black and standard on SEL, so it is available across the range, with Off-Road and Off-Road Custom drive modes on AWD models. It is a reactive clutch-based system with no low range or torque vectoring.
4Motion versions get 7.6 in of ground clearance (6.5 in FWD) and an Off-Road mode with hill-descent assist, enough for dirt roads and campsite tracks. There is no off-road trim, skid plating, locker or low range, and all-season tires are standard.
One engine, one transmission, no electrification: every 2025 Taos is the 174-hp 1.5T with the 8-speed automatic, and the only choice is FWD vs 4Motion. Segment rivals offer hybrids or a second engine.
2Efficiency & RangeThe Taos's best-graded category.2.81B-
The volume FWD Taos with the 174-hp 1.5T and 8-speed automatic is EPA-rated 31 mpg combined; 4Motion AWD (also 8-speed for 2025) drops to 28. Strong for a gas-only subcompact SUV, though behind hybrid rivals.
28 mpg city for the FWD volume trim is respectable for a turbo gas subcompact SUV with no hybrid assist.
36 mpg highway is the Taos's strongest efficiency figure and near the top of gas-only subcompact SUVs, helped by the tall-geared 8-speed automatic.
With a 13.2-gallon tank and a 31-mpg combined rating, the FWD Taos covers roughly 409 miles per tank — above average for a subcompact SUV without being class-leading.
EPA's annual fuel cost estimate at 15,000 miles a year on regular fuel is $2,150 for the FWD Taos and $2,400 for 4Motion; low for a gas SUV but well above hybrid rivals.
The 1.5T runs on regular 87-octane unleaded with no premium requirement or recommendation, an advantage over premium-fuel turbo rivals. No special fueling, DEF or charging needed.
3SafetyMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.12C
NHTSA rates the 2025 Taos 4 of 5 stars overall: five stars in the side crash test but only four in frontal crash and rollover (14.7% rollover risk).
No Top Safety Pick for 2025. The Taos is Good only in driver-side small overlap. It rates Acceptable in passenger-side small overlap, the updated side test and whiplash, and Marginal in the updated moderate overlap front because of rear-passenger injury risk. VW added rear-seatbelt pretensioners and load limiters on builds after January 2025, but the published rating is still Marginal. That puts it just below the mid band.
With the 2025 refresh, IQ.DRIVE is standard on every trim, including the base S. It covers Front Assist AEB with pedestrian/cyclist monitoring, Active Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert, ACC Stop and Go, Lane Assist, Travel Assist lane centering and Emergency Assist. The whole AEB/ACC/LKA/BSM/RCTA set is standard on every trim.
IIHS rates the standard Front Assist system Poor in the tougher vehicle-to-vehicle 2.0 test, with minimal braking in the higher-speed scenarios. Pedestrian prevention is Marginal: it avoided collisions at 12 mph and slowed only 9–14 mph at 25 mph, and it failed to slow at all in the parallel-adult scenarios. Both results are well below class leaders.
Active Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert are standard on all 2025 trims. When Lane Assist is active, the blind-spot system also countersteers against an unsafe lane change. There is no safe-exit alert, which keeps it below the top of the band.
Reviewers find Travel Assist keeps the Taos centered with little ping-ponging, which is better than typical for the class. The drawback is that lane centering only works together with adaptive cruise. The 2025 hardware is the same as the 2026.
Full-speed ACC with Stop and Go is standard on all trims and pairs with Travel Assist for highway assist. Reviewers say it holds speed and gap reliably, but its slowing and re-acceleration are less smooth than the best systems.
No hands-free highway system is offered on any 2025 Taos trim. Travel Assist is a hands-on system that requires steering-wheel input.
The base S's LED projector headlights rate Good. The curve-adaptive LED projectors on the volume SE and the SEL rate only Acceptable. High-beam assist is standard on all trims. Good on the base and Acceptable on the volume trim puts this in the mid band.
Natural sightlines are good for the class: the seating position is upright, the pillars are thin and the third-side windows are large. A rearview camera is standard, but no surround-view camera is offered, unlike Hyundai and Kia rivals.
IIHS rates the LATCH hardware Good: two complete sets in the rear outboard seats, plus a center tether anchor. Rear legroom is generous for a subcompact, though fitting three seats across is tight.
4Space & ComfortOne of the Taos's weakest categories.1.17D
The refreshed 2025 Taos is a two-row, five-passenger subcompact SUV in every trim (S, SE, SE Black, SEL), FWD or 4Motion.
40.7 in of front headroom without the sunroof is generous for a subcompact thanks to the upright roofline; the 2025 refresh did not change the body structure.
40.1 in is adequate in absolute terms but sits at the very bottom of the all-SUV 40–44.5 in band.
39.8 in of second-row headroom is near the top of the SUV band — a standout for a subcompact, courtesy of the boxy greenhouse.
37.9 in of rear legroom on a 105.9-in wheelbase is class-leading among subcompact SUVs and closer to compact-SUV territory.
No third row is offered on any 2025 Taos — a two-row, five-seat SUV — so this scores in the low band by definition.
27.9 cu ft behind the rear seat (FWD) is class-leading for a subcompact but modest against the all-SUV 25–80 cu ft band; 4Motion's multilink rear loses 3 cu ft.
65.9 cu ft with the 60/40 rear seat folded (60.2 cu ft AWD) is among the best in the subcompact class, though low against the all-SUV band.
Large door pockets, a deep but narrow console bin and anti-tip cupholders are competent, but the armrest bin is small and the cutout near the cupholders is nearly useless; no onboard power outlet or standout storage trick.
Front seats are well padded and bolstered, with an 8-way power driver's seat with lumbar from SE up; the rear bench is flat but benefits from class-best rear space.
Settled and composed at highway speed, but firmer than many subcompact rivals over broken pavement, especially on 19-in wheels; FWD cars use a torsion-beam rear.
Road noise is well controlled for the class, but there is some wind noise at 70 mph and the 1.5T gets buzzy under hard throttle — average-to-good, not class-leading.
Heated front seats and steering wheel, dual-zone Climatronic, remote start and an 8-way power driver seat arrive at the SE volume trim; ventilated front seats are SEL-only and there is no rear climate zone.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Taos's strongest categories.2.65C+
VW's 2025 pricing release starts the refreshed Taos at $24,995 for the S FWD plus a $1,425 destination charge — one of the lowest entry points in the subcompact-SUV class despite the new 174 hp engine and 8-speed automatic.
The SE is the volume trim, adding heated front seats, larger screens, dual-zone climate and wireless charging; $27,895 MSRP plus $1,425 destination, with 4Motion a $1,700 option.
Scheduled maintenance runs roughly $500/yr, but Volkswagen's above-average repair costs and a ~24% chance of a major repair inside five years lift the combined figure above the mainstream norm. The 2025 refresh's switch from the 7-speed DCT to a conventional 8-speed automatic removes one known cost risk but carries no published change to the estimate.
iSeeCars measures Taos five-year depreciation between 44.8% and 48.1% depending on dataset, both worse than the ~39.9% average loss for its SUV class — mid-pack retention, better than the Tiguan but behind the HR-V and Crosstrek.
Volkswagen's New Vehicle Limited Warranty on 2025 models is 4 years/50,000 miles — a year longer than the 3-year/36,000-mile mainstream norm.
Volkswagen folds powertrain coverage into the single 4-year/50,000-mile limited warranty, well short of the 5-year/60,000-mile mainstream norm and Hyundai/Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile coverage.
Carefree Coverage includes 2 years/20,000 miles of scheduled maintenance, 3 years/36,000 miles of 24-hour roadside assistance and a Car-Net connected-services trial — real value among mainstream brands, but short of luxury-style multi-year programs.
$29,320 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (53.5% retained, or about $15,686) leaves about $13,634 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $19,634 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the Taos's weakest categories.1.47D
Consumer Reports rates the 2025 Taos less reliable than other cars of its model year and calls the Taos the least reliable model in VW's current lineup, while J.D. Power's owner-based Quality & Reliability score is an average 77/100 — mixed signals that sit at the bottom of the average band. 2025 is also the first year of the mid-cycle refresh (revised engine, new 8-speed automatic across the line), so the refreshed hardware carries first-year risk on top of that record.
Volkswagen has sat below the industry average in J.D. Power's dependability studies for several years running and finished last among brands in the 2026 VDS (301 PP100 vs 204 average), with Consumer Reports placing VW in the lower half of its brand rankings and near the bottom on owner satisfaction. Both major trackers put the brand in the bottom third.
The 2025 Taos is covered by two severity-weighted safety recalls: a fuel-pressure-sensor separation that can leak fuel and create a fire risk after a rear-end collision, and a software fault that can blank the entire digital instrument cluster (speed, gear and warning telltales). Neither is a powertrain failure, but a fire-risk campaign plus loss of driver instrumentation is worse than routine recall activity.
The 2025 refresh fitted an uprated 1.5L EA211 evo TSI (174 hp) — a widely used engine family with no systemic failure pattern, but with known water-pump/thermostat-housing leaks and a scheduled timing belt. The bigger win is the conventional 8-speed automatic now standard on FWD and AWD, replacing the complaint-prone 7-speed DSG on AWD models; as a first-year pairing in this application it is not yet proven at high mileage.
The 2025 refresh noticeably upgraded the cabin — soft-touch dash surfaces and contrast stitching from SE up, a redesigned console and two-tone Cloud Tex leatherette — which reviewers describe as feeling above the price point. Hard plastics remain in low-touch lower zones; better than most subcompact rivals but behind the Mazda CX-30 benchmark.
Puebla body assembly is generally solid and owner complaints center on electronics (infotainment freezes, the cluster software fault) rather than panel gaps or rattles, but VW ran worse than the industry average in J.D. Power's 2025 Initial Quality Study and the Taos's own quality score is only average.
VW sells and services through roughly 600–640 US dealers — adequate national coverage but about half the footprint of Toyota, Honda or Chevrolet, meaning longer trips in rural markets. VW is not among the leaders in J.D. Power's dealer-service satisfaction rankings.
As a high-volume MQB vehicle the Taos has broad parts availability and a large VW aftermarket, and its own routine costs are modest (~$187/yr maintenance). Brand-level repair costs run above the industry norm, and the timing belt is a paid scheduled service rather than a lifetime chain.
7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.01C
The 2025 refresh introduced a floating 8-inch center touchscreen, standard on every trim with no larger option — small against rivals that offer 10+ inch screens.
The refreshed MIB3 setup has a clean menu structure, large icons, hard shortcut buttons around the screen and real volume/tuning knobs that reviewers prefer over newer VW MIB4 systems; held back by an aging platform and a small screen.
Wireless App-Connect (Apple CarPlay and Android Auto) is standard across the 2025 lineup including the base S — better than rivals that reserve wireless projection for upper trims; the small screen limits the projected interface.
Command-based voice control arrives with the SE's Composition Media unit, while built-in navigation (Discover Media) is SEL-only; functional but pre-natural-language, and most owners will use phone projection instead.
No premium audio is offered for 2025: VW's Beats licensing lapsed and the 2025 SEL ships with the same six-speaker non-premium system as lower trims. Adequate base audio, but no upgrade anywhere in the range (VW restored an 8-speaker premium system for 2026).
A full-digital cluster is standard on every trim — 8 inches on the S, the 10.25-inch configurable Digital Cockpit Pro with map view on SE and SEL — well ahead of the subcompact norm.
Eligible for VW's over-the-air updates (MY2020+) delivered via the myVW app, but scope is infotainment/module software rather than feature-adding whole-vehicle releases.
myVW covers remote lock/unlock, locate, alerts and remote start on SE and up, but Remote Access is trial-then-subscription and there is no phone-as-key.
Two 45-watt USB-C ports up front are standard on every trim — unusually high output for the class — with a wireless charging pad from SE up; no AC outlet and no wireless charging on the base S.
KESSY keyless access with push-button start and remote start arrive at the SE volume trim; the S uses a conventional key, and there is no phone-as-key or hands-free liftgate.
Rearview camera is standard and front/rear Park Distance Control comes in from SE, but no surround-view camera is offered on any trim and the backup camera's resolution draws criticism.
No head-up display is offered on any 2025 Taos trim; the Digital Cockpit Pro is VW's driver-information answer instead.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.10C
Class-leading rear room (37.9 in legroom, 39.8 in headroom) handles rear-facing seats, IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Good, and the tall 27.9 cu ft cargo bay swallows a stroller; held back by a fixed (non-sliding) bench and only two LATCH positions.
IQ.DRIVE (Front Assist, Active Blind Spot Monitor, Rear Traffic Alert, Travel Assist, ACC Stop and Go) is standard on every trim from the $24,995 S — exactly the affordable-trim ADAS families need. But crash credentials are middling: NHTSA 4 stars overall, IIHS Marginal updated moderate overlap and Poor updated vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention, no award, and rear-belt pretensioners only on cars built after January 2025.
Near-compact rear space and 27.9 cu ft of luggage room with five aboard make multi-hour trips workable for a family of four; rear amenities are thin (rear vents and dual-zone only from SE), ride is a touch firm, and there's no premium audio on any 2025 trim.
The 2025 refresh made the conventional 8-speed automatic standard on all models, retiring the 4Motion car's low-speed-jerky DSG; with no notable turbo lag, standard ACC Stop and Go/Travel Assist and an upright, high-visibility seat, it is a low-fatigue commuter. Firm-ish ride keeps it out of the top band.
31 mpg combined on regular fuel (28 with 4Motion) is good for a non-hybrid subcompact, and two years of complimentary scheduled maintenance helps early on; hybrid rivals clear 40 mpg and VW repair costs run above average later.
A compact 175.9-in footprint, thin pillars and large quarter windows make it easy to place in town, and Park Distance Control is standard from SE up; the 37.6-ft curb-to-curb turning circle is only mid-pack and there's no 360-degree camera.
VW publishes no US tow rating for the 2025 Taos, removing the key work metric; with 174 hp and no bed, its work value is limited to the 65.9 cu ft enclosed cargo hold.
High-volume MQB A0 hardware and a revised 1.5 TSI with a conventional automatic should hold up with care, but there's no fleet or commercial track record, no work-grade trim or washable surfaces, and VW's repair-cost reputation argues against hard use.
Passenger-car basics only: 60/40 split with pass-through, near-flat folded floor, tie-downs and roof rails from SE up; no 120V outlet, no factory hitch (no tow rating), no washable cargo package and no upfit ecosystem.
About 409 miles of range (13.2-gal tank at 31 mpg FWD), front seats that stay comfortable over three-hour stints, and a smooth Travel Assist make it a better mile-eater than its size suggests; firm ride, wind noise at 70 mph and the absence of any premium audio for 2025 cap it.
4Motion with Off-Road and Off-Road Custom modes (hill descent control, relaxed stability control) and 7.6 in of ground clearance handles gravel, trailheads and snow; but no tow rating rules out a hitch or trailer, there's no 120V outlet, and FWD cars drop to 6.5 in clearance.
27.9 / 65.9 cu ft (FWD) are near the top of the subcompact class, with a tall square bay, 60/40 split with pass-through, adjustable floor and roof rails from SE; 4Motion costs 3.0/5.7 cu ft and there's no hitch for a cargo tray or bike rack.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.47C+
Nimble and composed by subcompact-SUV standards, with balanced body control, but instrumented grip is mid-pack and FWD trims' torsion-beam rear gives up some composure to the 4Motion multilink setup.
Quick, accurate and light in town, but the effort build-up feels artificial and feedback is limited — precise rather than communicative.
Pedal feel is fine for daily use, but the measured 70–0 stop of 188 ft is long for the class and 12 ft worse than the pre-refresh car.
For 2025 the revised 174-hp 1.5T pairs with an 8-speed torque-converter automatic on all models, eliminating the 4Motion DSG's low-speed hesitation; delivery is clean with little lag, but acceleration is unhurried (about 8 s to 60) and the engine runs out of steam for passing.
The small turbo four sounds strained when worked hard, but isolation is decent for the price and there's no meaningful vibration at cruise.
VW's technical specification for this generation lists 37.6 ft curb-to-curb for both drivetrains, and the 2025 refresh left wheelbase and track unchanged; mid-pack for the class.
Upright, commanding seat with thin pillars and large quarter windows gives excellent visibility, and the refreshed dash keeps physical shortcut buttons and knobs; VW's touch-sensitive steering-wheel and climate controls are the main ergonomic gripe.
A recognizable VW crispness makes it more engaging than most budget subcompact crossovers, but modest thrust, numb steering and a firm-without-reward ride keep it in pleasant-commuter territory.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Taos's strongest categories.2.58C+
The refreshed 2025 Taos S at $24,995 includes the IQ.DRIVE driver-assistance suite (AEB with pedestrian detection, blind-spot and rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise with lane-centering), an 8-inch floating touchscreen with App-Connect, LED lighting and the 174 hp engine with an 8-speed automatic. Heated seats, a power driver's seat, dual-zone climate and wireless charging wait for the SE, where some Korean rivals include them lower in the range — competitive, not class-leading.
For 2025 VW added the 174 hp engine and a conventional 8-speed automatic while lowering the entry price to $24,995, so the Taos delivers one of the roomiest rear seats and cargo bays in the class, livelier acceleration than most rivals and a ~$29,300 volume SE. The SEL near $36,000 is pricey against loaded Crosstrek/HR-V trims and there is no hybrid, keeping it fair value rather than a bargain.
Four trims — S, SE, SE Black and SEL — span $24,995 to $34,695, with 4Motion AWD optional on all but the SEL where it is standard. SE Black is mostly an appearance variant, there is a single powertrain and no hybrid or performance version, and options are package-based.
A steady mid-pack seller and an important volume model for VW, but sales slipped in the refresh year to about 55,000 units from a 2024 peak near 65,900, well behind segment leaders like the Trax, Crosstrek and HR-V.
Volkswagen is neutral in the US: German driving feel and an upscale-feeling cabin help showroom appeal, offset by middling reliability and dealer-service reputations and resale that trails the class.
Meaningful posted money was common on the 2025 Taos without it looking distressed: a $1,500 Customer Bonus in spring 2025 plus recurring subvented 3.9% APR financing and graduate/military bonuses, and further clearance support once 2026 stock arrived.
2025 is the first year of a substantial mid-cycle refresh of the 2022-launched generation: new front and rear styling with a light bar, a redesigned interior with floating 8-inch screen, an updated 174 hp 1.5T and an 8-speed automatic replacing the 7-speed DCT on 4Motion models. Current and newly updated, though the underlying MQB A1 platform dates to 2022.
Reviewers welcomed the refresh — praise for the roomy rear seat, big cargo bay, upscale cabin and newly lively powertrain — placing it in the upper half of the subcompact class, but it is rarely the outright comparison-test pick and holds no major award.
