The verdict
A mixed-report mid-size luxury suv, strong on safety and held back by efficiency.
The 2020 XC90 is one of the safest and best-finished three-row luxury SUVs of its era: 5 stars from NHTSA, an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, and a cabin that matches or beats its German rivals. What it gives up is muscle and running costs. The volume T5 AWD has 250 hp and takes 7.9 seconds to reach 60 mph, drinks premium fuel at 23 MPG combined (about $3,550 a year), and Volvo repair costs run above average. Steep depreciation makes it a tempting used buy, but budget for upkeep now that the 4-year/50,000-mile warranty has expired.
Jump to scoresStrengths

What holds it back
- The volume T5 feels underpowered
- Thirsty, and it wants premium

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the XC90's weakest categories.1.29D
2020 is the facelift year of the SPA-based second generation (2016–). The volume gas configuration is the T5 AWD, a 2.0L turbo four making 250 hp; the turbo- and supercharged T6 makes 316 hp.
The T5's 258 lb-ft is modest for a 4,400+ lb three-row luxury SUV; six-cylinder German rivals make more.
Just under 8 seconds is leisurely for the luxury class; the T6 and T8 are the quick versions.
Delivery is smooth and turbo lag is minor, but the four-cylinder sounds strained when worked hard in a big three-row SUV and auto start/stop restarts are noticeable versus six-cylinder rivals. The 2020 T5 has no mild-hybrid assist (that arrived with the 2021+ B-series).
The Aisin eight-speed Geartronic automatic shifts smoothly and chooses gears sensibly; the comfort-biased calibration makes kickdown a little slow.
Every AWD 2020 XC90 is rated 5,000 lbs, which is competitive for a unibody luxury three-row; only the T5 FWD drops to 4,000 lbs.
AWD is standard on the T6 and T8 and optional on the T5, with Off-Road drive mode and hill descent control. The base T5 is FWD, and there is no low range or locking differential.
Built for pavement: about 9 in of ground clearance (more with the optional air suspension), Off-Road mode and hill descent control, but no skid plates, low range, lockers or off-road trim.
Three distinct powertrains in 2020: the T5 turbo, the T6 turbo+supercharged and the 400 hp T8 plug-in hybrid. That is unusually broad, electrified choice for the segment in this period.
2Efficiency & RangeThe XC90's lowest-graded category.0.32F
The volume 2020 T5 AWD is EPA-rated 23 MPG combined, middling for a three-row luxury SUV.
With no hybrid assist on the 2020 T5, stop-and-go economy is ordinary.
27 MPG on the highway is respectable for the class.
An 18.8-gallon tank at 23 MPG combined gives about 432 miles, comfortably above the segment floor.
Premium fuel at 23 MPG puts the T5 AWD near the expensive end of the SUV band.
EPA lists premium gasoline for every 2020 XC90 powertrain, which is a real running-cost penalty.
3SafetyThe XC90's best-graded category.3.49B+
NHTSA gave every tested 2020 XC90 version (T5 FWD, T5 AWD, T6 AWD) 5 stars overall, with 5-star frontal and side results and 4 stars for rollover.
Earned the IIHS 2020 Top Safety Pick+, with Good ratings in the driver- and passenger-side small overlap, moderate overlap, side, roof strength and head-restraint tests.
Every 2020 trim (Momentum, R-Design, Inscription) comes with City Safety AEB (pedestrian, cyclist and large-animal detection), adaptive cruise with Pilot Assist, blind spot detection, lane departure warning and prevention, and run-off-road mitigation. The 360-degree camera and curve-adaptive headlights cost extra in the Advanced package.
The standard City Safety system earns IIHS's top Superior rating for vehicle-to-vehicle crash prevention and Advanced for daytime pedestrian crash prevention. IIHS ran no night pedestrian test in this period.
BLIS blind-spot detection is standard and pairs with steer assist, and cross traffic alert is fitted. Rear cross-traffic auto-braking only became widespread on later model years.
Lane Keeping Aid and Pilot Assist lane centering are standard. Reviewers call the centering smooth, but it needs clear lane markings and frequently asks for steering input.
Standard full-speed adaptive cruise with stop-and-go works together with Pilot Assist steering. It is smooth in traffic, though following gaps are conservative and it hands back control abruptly when markings fade.
No trim offers hands-free driving. Pilot Assist needs continuous steering-wheel input.
IIHS rates both headlight variants Acceptable: the standard LED reflectors with high-beam assist and the curve-adaptive LEDs in the Advanced package. No Good-rated headlight was offered.
The upright glasshouse, low beltline and large mirrors give excellent natural sightlines. The surround-view camera is an extra-cost Advanced-package item on the volume Momentum trim.
IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Acceptable. Lower anchors are only in the second-row outboard seats, and the third row has no lower anchors and only one tether. Wide rear doors and the optional integrated center booster help.
4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.10C
The volume 2020 XC90 T5 AWD Momentum is a 7-passenger model; 2020 added a 6-passenger captain's-chair option.
Front headroom is average for a mid-size luxury SUV.
The front legroom figure is short for the class on paper, though reviewers don't call the front row cramped.
The tall, boxy roofline gives generous second-row headroom.
Second-row legroom is mid-pack for three-row luxury SUVs. The seats slide fore and aft to trade room with the third row.
The standard third row is fine for children and short adult trips, and the sliding second-row seats ease access. With 31.9 in of legroom it falls short of adult-usable.
Space behind the second row is modest for a three-row SUV, though the low, square load floor helps.
The maximum cargo area is large and folds flat.
The XC90 has three individually sliding and reclining second-row seats, an available integrated child booster and a flat-folding load floor. Console and door storage are only average, and the MY2025 refresh later enlarged the storage.
Volvo's front seats are consistently praised for long-distance comfort and support. The second row is comfortable and the third row less so.
The ride is plush with good body control on the Momentum's smaller wheels. The optional 21- and 22-inch wheels make it jarring over broken pavement. Air suspension is optional.
Wind and road noise are well suppressed at a cruise, but the T5 four-cylinder sounds coarse when worked hard. Extra sound insulation arrived only with the MY2025 facelift.
The Momentum has four-zone automatic climate as standard. Heated front seats, a heated wheel and heated rear seats come in option packages; ventilated and massage front seats are on the Inscription. Volvo On Call adds remote climate.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the XC90's weakest categories.0.62F
2020 is the facelift year of the SPA-based second generation (2016–); the entry point is the T5 FWD Momentum with the 250-hp 2.0L turbo four.
The T5 AWD Momentum is the representative gas volume configuration (matching the cat1 scored trim); T6 and Inscription versions and option packages push typical stickers into the mid-to-high $50Ks.
Sources diverge widely: CarEdge's model-level projection is mild while Edmunds' True Cost to Own for the 2020 is very high; three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance offsets early costs, so a blended figure slightly above the 2023's is used.
Used 2020 T5 Momentum examples now trade around $20,000–$22,000 against a ~$50,000 sticker, consistent with the XC90's below-average luxury-SUV residuals.
Volvo's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years/50,000 miles, the luxury-brand norm.
Volvo offers no extended powertrain term in the US; engine and drivetrain are covered only under the concurrent 4 yr/50,000 mi warranty.
MY2020 XC90s include Volvo's complimentary factory scheduled maintenance for 3 years/36,000 miles (10k/20k/30k services) plus 4 years of unlimited-mile roadside assistance and a Volvo On Call trial — on par with BMW and ahead of Lexus and Mercedes.
$51,845 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (43% retained, or about $22,293) leaves about $29,552 in depreciation. Add the projected $7,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $37,052 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.72C-
Both main sources rate the 2020 XC90 as average. Consumer Reports calls it about average for its model year, and J.D. Power gives it a predicted reliability score of 71/100, just inside the Average band, and a Quality & Reliability score of 77/100. That J.D. Power figure is a little stronger than the 2021's, but owners still report electrical, Sensus infotainment and start/stop faults, so this sits in the lower part of average.
Around the 2020 model year, Volvo sat in the bottom half of the brand dependability surveys: roughly 20th of 28 brands at Consumer Reports, and below the industry average in J.D. Power's VDS. A brief improvement in 2023 was followed by a slide to near the bottom by 2026, so the multi-year record is lower third.
Five NHTSA campaigns cover the gas 2020 XC90, which is more recall activity than typical. Two of them are large and touch driveability or active safety: a low-pressure fuel-pump fuse that can blow and stall the engine (85,550 units), and a software fault that can disable automatic emergency braking (121,605 units). The other three are small assembly faults (steering gear, ABS/ESC unit weld, second-row belt bolts). The PHEV battery and brake campaigns and the rear-seat display recall on the T8-only Excellence trim don't apply to the scored gas trim.
The volume 2020 XC90 is the T6 AWD. It uses the turbocharged and supercharged 2.0-litre Drive-E four with the Aisin eight-speed automatic. The automatic is proven, but a heavily stressed small engine in a heavy three-row SUV has a mixed record, with oil-consumption and supercharger complaints. The 2019-2020 fuel-pump fuse stall recall adds a powertrain-adjacent defect specific to this model year, so this scores as mixed history rather than a known failure.
The XC90 has one of the best-finished cabins in its segment. Real wood and metal trim, Nappa leather on upper trims and the Orrefors crystal shifter (Inscription) put it level with or above the X5, GLE and Q7, with hard plastics only in low-touch zones. The 2020 facelift kept the cabin largely unchanged.
Reviewers find assembly on the mature platform solid and the cabin quiet, and J.D. Power's 77/100 Quality & Reliability score is respectable. However, three of the five recalls on the gas 2020 are production-line assembly faults (steering gear screws, a brake unit weld and under-torqued belt bolts), which holds the score in the generally-solid band.
Volvo's US retailer network covers metro areas well but is thinner than BMW's or Mercedes-Benz's, so rural owners may face long drives. The 2020 model year came with 3-year/36,000-mile complimentary factory maintenance.
Repair costs run above the segment norm. Parts come mostly through dealers and from Europe, and the independent aftermarket is thinner than for Lexus or Acura rivals. As a 6-year-old twin-charged car now out of its new-car warranty, the 2020 is fully exposed to these costs.
7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.87C-
Every 2020 XC90 uses the same 9-inch portrait Sensus touchscreen, and no larger screen was offered.
Sensus is clean and tablet-like, but it buries climate and other common functions in touch menus and lags on startup. The much quicker Google-based system replaced it for MY2023.
Apple CarPlay and newly added Android Auto are standard but wired only. Sensus XC90s never offered wireless projection.
Sensus Navigation is standard and gets free MapCare updates, but it and the command-style voice control feel dated, so most owners use phone projection. Google Assistant and Maps arrived only in MY2023.
The 10-speaker base system is decent, upper trims get a 14-speaker Harman Kardon, and the optional 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins is excellent.
A 12.3-inch digital driver display with map view is standard on every trim, though it is less configurable than German rivals' clusters.
Sensus cars get map updates over the air, but system software is updated at the dealer, and no OTA update adds features.
Volvo On Call covers remote start, climate preconditioning, lock/unlock and locate. There is no phone-as-key, and the service needs a subscription after the trial.
The Momentum has two USB-A ports up front. Wireless charging is optional, and the standard wireless pad and second-row USB-C ports only arrived for MY2021. There is no household outlet.
Push-button start, a power liftgate and app-based remote start are standard. Proximity keyless entry and the hands-free liftgate come with packages, and there is no phone-as-key.
A rear camera and parking sensors are standard. The 360-degree camera requires the optional Advanced package, and Park Assist Pilot is available.
A head-up display is available on every gas trim, but only in the optional Advanced package.
8Use-Case FitOne of the XC90's strongest categories.2.62C+
Wide rear doors, three individually sliding second-row seats, an available integrated booster and a third row usable by kids make family logistics easy. LATCH is only Acceptable, and the third row has no lower anchors.
Top crash ratings, plus City Safety AEB, adaptive cruise with Pilot Assist, lane keeping and blind-spot monitoring as standard on the base Momentum.
Four-zone climate, comfortable front and middle rows and about 432 miles of range make it a strong family tourer. Rear device charging is thin before the 2021 USB-C update, and luggage space with every seat in use is limited.
Light, precise steering, a smooth eight-speed and excellent visibility make it easy in traffic. Climate controls buried in the Sensus screen and the abrupt stop/start add minor friction.
The T5 AWD returns 23 MPG combined on premium fuel, and Volvo repair costs run above average, so commuting costs sit at the class average or slightly worse.
Good visibility and standard parking sensors help, but it is a long three-row SUV with a 38.7-ft turning circle, and the 360 camera is optional.
A 5,000-lb tow rating handles a small camper or boat, though the 250-hp T5 works hard at that load. The flat-folding cargo area helps, but this is a luxury family SUV, not a work tool.
Reliability is average and repair costs above average, and the luxury cabin materials don't suit hard use.
It has roof rails, cargo tie-downs and a dealer tow bar, but no household outlet or other work-oriented features.
Excellent seats, a quiet cruise and standard adaptive cruise with Pilot Assist make it a capable mile-eater, and ~432 miles of range is good. Pilot Assist tends to wander, and the T5 drones when pressed on grades.
AWD on the volume T5, about 9 in of ground clearance, hill descent control, optional air suspension and a 5,000-lb rating handle gravel roads and toys. The base T5 is FWD and there is no off-road hardware.
The second and third rows fold flat into a large, square load bay. Roof rails are standard and a tow hitch is available.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.14C
It is secure and well controlled for its size but not engaging. The BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE are more fun to drive fast.
The steering is precise but very light, with little feedback.
The brakes are easy to modulate in daily driving, but instrumented stopping distances trail German rivals.
The 250-hp T5 is smooth with little turbo lag and the eight-speed shifts cleanly. It feels stretched in a 4,400-lb SUV (7.9 s to 60 mph), kickdown is slow and stop/start restarts are noticeable. It has no mild-hybrid smoothing.
It is quiet at a cruise, but the T5 four-cylinder sounds coarse and out of place in a luxury SUV under hard acceleration.
The turning circle is middling for a three-row SUV. The large optional wheels widen it by about a foot.
The driving position is commanding and highly adjustable with excellent visibility, let down by the Sensus screen taking over climate and other functions that deserve physical controls.
It is pleasant and comfortable, but the volume T5 is merely adequate and the chassis is tuned for comfort rather than sport. Few would take the long way home.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the XC90's strongest categories.2.79B-
Even the T5 Momentum includes leather, a panoramic sunroof, a power liftgate, LED headlights, the 9-inch Sensus touchscreen (now with Android Auto as well as CarPlay for 2020) and City Safety AEB, with a third row standard; adaptive cruise/Pilot Assist and premium audio remained option-package items.
A three-row luxury SUV starting near $49K undercut comparably equipped Audi Q7, BMW X5/X7 and Mercedes GLE/GLS, though its four-cylinder-only lineup gave up performance per dollar to six-cylinder rivals.
Three trims (Momentum, R-Design, Inscription) across T5 FWD/AWD, T6 AWD and T8 plug-in hybrid powertrains, 6- or 7-seat layouts, plus the four-seat T8 Excellence flagship — a wide, well-spaced ladder.
About 34,000 US sales made it a steady mid-pack seller among luxury three-row SUVs — well behind the Lexus RX and BMW X5 but ahead of many rivals — with only a small pandemic-year dip.
Volvo's safety and Scandinavian-design image was strong after the SPA-generation revival, though it trails the German brands and Lexus on prestige and resale.
In 2020 Volvo ran regular lease specials and loyalty/conquest offers plus low-APR financing during the pandemic spring; typical discounts ran a few thousand dollars off MSRP without fire-sale pricing.
MY2020 was the fifth year of the 2016 SPA generation, freshened with a mid-cycle facelift (new grille and fascias, Android Auto, brake-energy recovery); current but no longer cutting-edge against the new Mercedes GLS/GLE and BMW X5/X7.
Well reviewed for design, interior and safety, and a value-award winner, though by 2020 rarely the comparison-test pick over newer German rivals; the generation's NACTOY and MotorTrend SUV of the Year wins date from 2016.
