The verdict
A mixed-report mid-size luxury suv, strong on safety and held back by efficiency.
The 2021 XC90 is a safe and elegant family hauler. It earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and a 5-star NHTSA rating, has one of the nicest cabins in the class, and offers seven seats with a usable kids' third row. The catch is running costs: the volume T6 AWD manages 22 MPG combined on premium fuel (about $3,750 a year), reliability is only average, and the powertrain warranty ends at 4 years/50,000 miles. As a used buy around five years old, it makes the most sense for families who value safety and comfort over low running costs.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.91C-
2021 is a carry-over year of the second-generation (2016–) SPA XC90, before the B5/B6 mild hybrids arrived. The volume powertrain is the T6: a 2.0L four with both a turbocharger and a supercharger, sold on the Momentum, R-Design and Inscription trims.
295 lb-ft is adequate for a ~4,500 lb three-row SUV but trails the six-cylinder German rivals.
A quick figure for a three-row luxury SUV. Published T6 times range from 5.8 to 6.5 s depending on the source and test method (6.5 s is Volvo's 0–100 km/h figure), so a mid-range value is used.
The twin-charged four pulls strongly with little lag thanks to the supercharger, but it sounds coarse and buzzy when worked hard in a big luxury SUV, and engine restarts from stop/start are noticeable compared with six-cylinder rivals.
The Aisin eight-speed automatic shifts smoothly and is tuned for comfort. Kickdown can feel slightly hesitant, and the gear selector is fussy.
Every 2021 powertrain is rated at 5,000 lbs. That is competitive for a unibody luxury three-row but short of the class leaders.
AWD is standard on the T6 and T8 and optional on the T5; only the entry T5 Momentum offers FWD. The car has an Off-Road drive mode and hill descent control, but no low range or locking differentials.
Built for pavement: roughly 9.3 in of ground clearance (more with the optional air suspension), plus Off-Road mode and hill descent control, but no skid plates, low range, lockers or off-road trim.
Three distinct powertrains for 2021: the 250 hp T5 turbo (FWD or AWD), the 316 hp twin-charged T6, and the 400 hp T8 Recharge PHEV. That is wide electrified choice for the segment.
2Efficiency & RangeThe XC90's lowest-graded category.0.06F
The volume T6 AWD is EPA-rated at 22 MPG combined, below average for a mid-size luxury SUV. The supercharger costs about 1 MPG compared with the T5 AWD.
Without any hybrid assist, stop-and-go economy is weak for the class.
28 MPG on the highway is the T6's best figure and is mid-pack for the segment.
An 18.8-gallon tank at 22 MPG combined gives 414 miles of EPA range, above the segment floor but unremarkable.
Premium fuel at 22 MPG combined puts the T6 at the expensive end of the SUV band. Only a home-charged T8 meaningfully lowers it.
EPA lists premium gasoline for every 2021 XC90 powertrain, a real cost penalty. The T8 can offset some of it with home charging.
3SafetyThe XC90's best-graded category.3.46B+
NHTSA rated every gas 2021 XC90 it tested (T5 FWD, T5 AWD, T6 AWD) 5 stars overall, with 5-star frontal and side results and 4 stars for rollover.
Earned the IIHS 2021 Top Safety Pick+, with Good ratings in both small overlap tests and the other crashworthiness tests. The only result short of Good that year was the Acceptable headlights.
Every 2021 trim gets City Safety AEB, adaptive cruise, lane keeping aid, oncoming-lane mitigation, and BLIS with Steer Assist (newly standard for 2021), plus cross-traffic alert and parking sensors. Pilot Assist lane centering and the 360-degree camera were optional on the volume Momentum trim.
IIHS rates the standard City Safety AEB Superior in both the vehicle-to-vehicle and daytime pedestrian tests. Night pedestrian testing did not exist yet for 2021, so night performance is unverified.
BLIS blind-spot monitoring with Steer Assist became standard on every trim for 2021, and Cross Traffic Alert with autobrake is fitted as well. Both intervene actively rather than only warning.
Lane Keeping Aid is standard on every trim. Pilot Assist adds lane centering but is optional on the volume Momentum trim, and reviewers noted it tends to wander at freeway speeds.
Full-speed adaptive cruise with stop-and-go is standard. Combining it with Pilot Assist's steering costs extra on the Momentum, and reviewers called the system useful but imperfect.
No hands-free driving option at any trim. Pilot Assist requires the driver's hands on the wheel and tolerates only brief hands-off pauses.
IIHS rates the LED reflector headlights Acceptable. They have curve-adaptive beams and high-beam assist, and one headlight variant is fitted to every trim.
An upright glasshouse, low hood and large mirrors give excellent natural sightlines. The surround-view camera is optional on the Momentum.
IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Acceptable. Lower anchors are limited to the second-row outboard seats and the third row has none, though wide rear doors and the available integrated center booster help.
4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.10C
The 2021 XC90 T6 Momentum is sold as a 7-passenger ('7P') with a 6-passenger captain's-chair variant ('6P').
Average front headroom for a mid-size luxury SUV.
Front legroom is on the short side for the class on paper, though reviewers do not report the front row as cramped.
Generous second-row headroom from the tall, boxy roofline.
Second-row legroom is mid-pack for three-row luxury SUVs; the bench slides fore/aft to share room with the third row.
A standard third row that is fine for children and short adult trips, with sliding second-row seats easing access, but legroom (~32 in) keeps it short of adult-usable.
Cargo behind the second row is modest for a three-row SUV; the low, square load floor helps usability.
Large, flat-folding maximum cargo area.
Three individually sliding/reclining second-row seats, an available integrated child booster and a flat-folding load floor; console and door storage are only average and the 2024 refresh later added storage space.
Volvo's front seats are consistently praised for long-distance comfort and support; second row is comfortable, third row less so.
Plush on the volume trim's 19-inch wheels with good body control, but the optional 21/22-inch wheels make it jarring over broken pavement; air suspension optional.
Well-insulated from wind and road noise at cruise, but the T6 four-cylinder sounds coarse when worked hard; extra sound insulation only arrived with the MY2025 facelift.
Four-zone automatic climate and heated front seats standard on Momentum; heated wheel and rear seats in packages, ventilated/massage fronts on Inscription; remote preconditioning via Volvo On Call.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the XC90's weakest categories.0.46F
2021 is a carry-over year of the SPA-based second generation (MY2016–), one year after the MY2020 facelift; the lineup still opened with a front-drive T5 Momentum, the last years a FWD XC90 was sold in the US.
The T6 AWD is the configuration scored elsewhere for this year and the mainstream XC90 buy; Momentum is its entry trim, with R-Design and Inscription (~$63,000+) and the T8 Recharge (~$69,750+) above it.
Three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance blunt early costs, but the T6's supercharged-and-turbocharged 2.0-liter and optional air suspension make out-of-warranty repairs on an aging XC90 pricier than on the later mild-hybrid models; a mid-band blended figure is used.
Now about five years old, a 2021 T6 Momentum trades well under half its original sticker — typical for a large luxury SUV but weak in absolute terms.
Volvo's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years or 50,000 miles, matching the German luxury norm.
Volvo offers no separate extended powertrain term in the US, so engine and drivetrain coverage ends with the 4 yr/50,000 mi basic warranty — the floor of this band.
MY2021 XC90s are covered by Volvo's Complimentary Factory Scheduled Maintenance for the first three services (3 yr/30,000 mi) plus 4 years of unlimited-mile roadside assistance — comparable to BMW's program and ahead of Lexus and Mercedes.
$57,945 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (46% retained, or about $26,655) leaves about $31,290 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,800 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $38,090 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the XC90's weakest categories.1.76C-
Both main sources put the 2021 XC90 at average: Consumer Reports rates it about average for its model year, and U.S. News/J.D. Power gives it 70/100, the bottom of the Average band. Owners often report electrical, infotainment and start/stop faults, and RepairPal puts repair frequency above average, so it scores at the low end of average.
Around the 2021 model year, Volvo ranked in the bottom half of the brand surveys. Consumer Reports placed it about 20th of 28 brands, and J.D. Power's VDS had it below the industry average. A brief improvement in 2023 was followed by a slide to near-last by 2026, so the multi-year record sits in the lower third.
Five NHTSA campaigns apply to the gas 2021 XC90, which is more than typical. Several involve restraint or brake hardware: SRS module mounting, child-seat locking retractors, second-row belt anchor bolts and an ABS/ESC unit weld. However, most covered small production batches, all were assembly or part faults with dealer fixes, and none is a powertrain or fire defect on the gas car. The two PHEV battery and brake campaigns don't apply to the scored gas trim.
The volume 2021 XC90 uses the 2.0-litre Drive-E four. On the T6 it is both turbocharged and supercharged, and it pairs with the Aisin eight-speed automatic. The automatic is proven, but the highly stressed small engine in a heavy three-row SUV has a mixed long-term record: Drive-E engines have oil-consumption and supercharger complaints, and the platform has start/stop and electrical gremlins. That points to mixed history rather than a known failure.
The XC90 has one of the segment's best-finished cabins. Real wood and metal trim, Nappa leather on upper trims and the Orrefors crystal shifter (Inscription) put it level with or above the X5, GLE and Q7. The only hard plastic is in low-touch areas.
Reviewers find the mature platform's assembly solid and the cabin quiet. However, three of the five 2021 recalls are production-line assembly faults: an SRS unit not properly attached, under-torqued belt anchor bolts and a stray screw in the steering gear. Volvo's below-average dependability scores also hold this back.
Volvo's US retailer network covers metro areas well but is thinner than BMW's or Mercedes-Benz's, so rural owners may face long drives. The 2021 model year came with 3-year/36,000-mile complimentary factory maintenance.
Repair costs run above the segment norm. Parts come mostly through dealers and from Europe, and the independent aftermarket is thinner than for Lexus or Acura rivals. As a 5-year-old twin-charged car now largely out of warranty, the 2021 is exposed to these costs.
7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.97C-
Every 2021 XC90 uses the same 9-inch vertically oriented Sensus touchscreen; no larger screen offered.
Sensus is clean and tablet-like but buries climate and common functions in touch menus and still lags on startup; replaced by the much quicker Google-based system for MY2023.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard but wired only; wireless projection was never offered on Sensus XC90s.
Sensus Navigation with free MapCare updates and command-style voice control are functional but dated; most owners default to phone projection. Google Assistant/Maps arrived only in MY2023.
Decent base 10-speaker system, 14-speaker Harman Kardon on upper trims and an excellent optional 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system.
A 12.3-inch digital driver display is standard on every trim with map display; configurability is limited compared with German rivals.
Sensus cars receive map updates over the air but system software is updated at the dealer; no feature-adding OTA.
Volvo On Call provides remote start, climate preconditioning, lock/unlock and locate; no phone-as-key, and the service became subscription-based after the trial.
New for 2021, wireless phone charging and dual second-row USB-C ports are standard on all trims; no household outlet.
Push-button start and remote start via app are standard; proximity keyless entry and hands-free liftgate come with upper trims/packages, and Care Key speed limiting is included. No phone-as-key.
Front and rear parking sensors plus rear camera standard; the 360-degree camera requires the optional Advanced package, and Park Assist Pilot is available.
A head-up display is available on all gas trims, but only as part of the optional Advanced package.
8Use-Case FitOne of the XC90's strongest categories.2.63C+
Wide rear doors, three individual sliding second-row seats, available integrated booster and a usable third row for kids make family logistics easy; LATCH is only Acceptable and the third row has no lower anchors.
Top crash credentials plus AEB, adaptive cruise, lane-keeping, blind-spot monitoring with steering assist and front/rear parking sensors standard on the base trim.
Four-zone climate, comfortable first two rows, rear USB-C and 414-mile range make it a strong family tourer; luggage space with all seats in use is limited.
Light, precise steering, a smooth eight-speed and excellent visibility make it easy in traffic; the Sensus screen's buried climate controls and the T6's stop/start add minor friction.
The T6 AWD's 22 MPG combined on premium fuel and above-average Volvo repair costs make it a pricey commuter.
Good visibility and standard front/rear sensors help, but a 39.7-ft turning circle and the 360 camera being optional make tight spaces work.
A 5,000-lb tow rating handles a small camper or boat, and the flat-folding cargo area helps, but it is a luxury family SUV rather than a work tool.
Average reliability and above-average repair costs on a supercharged-plus-turbocharged four-cylinder; luxury cabin materials are not suited to hard use.
Roof rails, cargo tie-downs and a dealer tow bar, but no household outlet or work-oriented features.
Excellent seats, a quiet cruise and adaptive cruise/lane-keeping make it a capable mile-eater; 414-mile range is fine, and Pilot Assist tends to wander at freeway speeds.
Standard AWD on the T6, ~9.3 in ground clearance, hill descent control, optional air suspension and a 5,000-lb rating handle gravel roads and toys; no off-road hardware.
Flat-folding second and third rows open a large, square load bay; roof rails are standard and a tow hitch is available.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.19C
Secure and well controlled for its size but not engaging; the BMW X5 and Mercedes GLE are more fun to drive fast.
Precise but very light and short on feedback.
Easy to modulate in daily driving, but instrumented stopping distances trail German rivals.
The supercharged-and-turbocharged T6 pulls strongly with little lag and the eight-speed shifts smoothly, with occasional slow kickdown and a noticeable stop/start restart.
Quiet at cruise, but the four-cylinder sounds coarse and unbecoming of a luxury SUV under hard acceleration.
Wide turning circle typical of a large three-row SUV.
Commanding, highly adjustable driving position with excellent visibility, let down by the Sensus screen absorbing climate and other functions that deserve physical controls.
Pleasant and brisk in T6 form, but comfort-first rather than sporty; few would take the long way home in it.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the XC90's strongest categories.2.78B-
Every 2021 XC90 has three rows, a panoramic roof, leather, heated front seats, the 9-inch Sensus touchscreen with a 12.3-inch digital cluster and the full IntelliSafe suite including Pilot Assist — more than a base X5, GLE or Q7. The entry T5 is front-drive, though, and ventilated seats, air suspension and premium audio sit on higher trims or in packages.
The XC90 undercuts comparably equipped German rivals and includes three years of free maintenance, while the 316-hp T6 offers competitive pace for about $57,000; but the base T5 is front-drive and the T8 Recharge pushes past $70,000 — fair value rather than a bargain.
Three trims (Momentum, R-Design, Inscription) across three powertrains (T5, T6, T8 Recharge PHEV), FWD or AWD on the T5, 6- or 7-seat layouts and optional air suspension span roughly $50,000 to over $71,000 — a broad, well-spaced lineup for the class.
US XC90 sales rose 12.9% to 38,657 in calendar 2021 from 34,251 in 2020 — strong growth for a six-year-old design, though still well behind class leaders like the Lexus RX and BMW X5.
Volvo's safety reputation and Scandinavian design carry real appeal and the XC90 is the brand's US flagship, but the badge reads sensible rather than aspirational next to the German three, and resale is only class-average.
MY2021 went on sale in late 2020 when luxury incentives were still normal, but the 2021 chip shortage tightened inventory through the year so later buyers paid close to sticker; Volvo support was mostly subvented financing and lease offers.
The second-generation XC90 dated from the 2016 model year but had a facelift (with the T8 rebranded Recharge and a revised T5/T6) for MY2020, so 2021 was mid-cycle — a well-sorted but no longer new design, with no successor yet announced.
The 2021 XC90 and XC90 Recharge earned IIHS Top Safety Pick+ and a 5-star NHTSA overall rating, and U.S. News ranked it #3 among luxury midsize SUVs — well regarded and near the top, though rarely the outright class pick.
