The verdict

A mixed-report mid-size luxury suv, strong on safety and held back by ownership.

The 2026 Volvo XC90 is a beautifully built, exceptionally safe three-row luxury SUV that asks you to accept a decade-old platform and some genuinely painful running costs. It earns a 5-star NHTSA rating and a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick, comes standard with all-wheel drive, seven seats, a panoramic roof and the full driver-assist suite from $62,345, and its cabin still beats the BMW X5 and Audi Q7 on materials. But the volume B5 makes only 247 hp, returns 24 MPG combined on required premium fuel ($3,150 a year), retains about 45% of its value at five years, and Volvo just finished second-to-last in J.D. Power's 2026 dependability study. Buy it for the interior, the safety record and the calm — not for the numbers on the back end.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainOne of the XC90's weakest categories.1.49D
Horsepower
247 hp (B5); 295 hp B6, 455 hp T8 Recharge PHEV
24/100
#22 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2026 XC90 is a carry-over year of the SPA-based second generation after the 2024 (MY2025) facelift; the volume B5 AWD configuration uses a 2.0L turbo four with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system rated 247 hp, with the B6 and T8 Recharge stepping up from there.

Torque
266 lb-ft (B5); 310 lb-ft B6, 523 lb-ft T8
37/100
#22 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

B5 peak torque is 266 lb-ft in US trim; European B5 literature quotes 350 N·m (258 lb-ft), so the US figure is used here per the manufacturer-outranks-secondhand rule.

0–60 mph time
7.3 s (B5); 6.4 s B6, ~4.9 s T8
37/100
#20 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Manufacturer-quoted 0–60 for the B5 AWD is 7.3 seconds — mid-pack for a ~4,800 lb three-row luxury SUV; the T8 PHEV transforms the car with a sub-5-second run.

Powertrain refinement72
#17 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers consistently describe the B5's delivery as smooth and largely lag-free with unobtrusive 48-volt mild-hybrid transitions, but a 2.0-liter four hauling a three-row SUV still sounds strained under hard load and stop/start restarts are noticeable — good rather than seamless.

Transmission behavior78
#15 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The Aisin-sourced eight-speed automatic is repeatedly described as shifting imperceptibly and choosing gears sensibly; it is calibrated for smoothness over urgency, so kickdown can lag slightly, and there is no meaningful manual-mode engagement.

Max towing capacity
5,000 lbs (B6/T8 with factory tow bar); 4,000 lbs B5
57/100
#13 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Maximum conventional rating in any 2026 configuration is 5,000 lbs, achieved by the B6 mild hybrid and T8 Recharge with the factory tow bar; the volume B5 is capped at 4,000 lbs. Competitive for a unibody luxury three-row but short of the 7,200 lb class leaders.

AWD/4WD availability74
#20 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

All-wheel drive is standard on every 2026 XC90 trim and powertrain, with selectable Off-Road and Constant AWD drive modes and hill descent control; sophistication stops short of a low range or locking differentials, and torque vectoring is brake-based rather than a true rear-drive unit.

Off-road capability45
#7 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Pavement-oriented luxury crossover: 8.8 inches of ground clearance (raised further by the optional air suspension), an Off-Road drive mode and hill descent control, but no skid plates, low range, lockers or a dedicated off-road trim. Adequate for snow, gravel and trailheads only.

Powertrain lineup breadth82
#7 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Three genuinely distinct powertrains carry over for 2026 — B5 and B6 48-volt mild hybrids and the 455 hp T8 Recharge plug-in hybrid with roughly 32 miles of EV range — each orderable in any of the three trims, giving unusually wide electrified choice for the segment.

2Efficiency & RangeOne of the XC90's weakest categories.0.82F
Combined fuel economy
24 MPG combined (B5 AWD); B6 AWD 23 MPG, T8 Plug-in Hybrid 58 MPGe / 27 MPG on gas alone
47/100
#8 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The volume 2026 XC90 is the B5 AWD 2.0T with 48V mild-hybrid assist, EPA-rated 24 MPG combined — weak even for a three-row luxury SUV, and unchanged from the 2025 facelift, which brought styling, interior and infotainment updates but no mechanical revisions.

City fuel economy
22 MPG city (B5 AWD); B6 AWD 20 MPG city
50/100
#8 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

22 MPG city is the cost of asking a 2.0-liter turbo four to move a ~4,700 lb three-row SUV; the 48V integrated starter-generator only coasts and restarts the engine, so it returns none of the stop-and-go gain a full hybrid rival like the Lexus TX 350h or Toyota Grand Highlander Hybrid posts.

Highway fuel economy
27 MPG highway (B5 AWD); B6 AWD 26 MPG highway
44/100
#9 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

27 MPG highway is the powertrain's best number and the reason the XC90 still makes a credible road-trip car, but it trails the compact XC60 B5 by three MPG and sits mid-pack against the Audi Q7 and Mercedes GLE.

Driving range
451 mi total (B5 AWD); B6 AWD 432 mi, T8 Plug-in Hybrid 530 mi total with up to 32 mi electric-only
53/100
#8 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 18.8-gallon tank at 24 MPG combined yields an EPA total range of 451 miles — solidly above the segment floor and enough for a long day's drive, with the T8 stretching it to 530 miles.

Estimated annual fuel cost
$3,150/yr (B5 AWD, premium fuel, 15k mi); B6 AWD $3,300/yr, T8 Plug-in Hybrid $1,900/yr
19/100
#14 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

At $3,150 a year the B5 sits near the top of the SUV cost band — the combination of 24 MPG combined and a premium-fuel requirement is punishing, and only buyers who choose the T8 and charge at home escape it, at $1,900.

Fuel requirements34
#18 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The EPA lists premium gasoline for all three 2026 XC90 powertrains, and that surcharge is a meaningful part of why the annual estimate clears $3,100. The T8 offsets some of it with home charging, but 32 electric miles is a short leash before the premium-burning engine takes over, and Volvo offers no E85 or diesel alternative in the US.

3SafetyThe XC90's best-graded category.3.57A-
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (5 frontal, 5 side, 4 rollover)
100/100
#1 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA rated both 2026 XC90 variants — the B5/B6 mild hybrid and the T8 plug-in hybrid — at the full 5-star overall, with 5 stars in every frontal and side sub-test and 4 stars for rollover.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness86
#5 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Clean sweep of Good crashworthiness results — small overlap front driver and passenger, the updated moderate overlap front, and the updated side test — earning a 2026 Top Safety Pick, but short of TSP+ because both front crash prevention evaluations came back Acceptable rather than Good.

Standard ADAS suite breadth90
#8 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The base Core carries the full IntelliSafe/City Safety suite standard — AEB with pedestrian, cyclist and large-animal detection, Pilot Assist lane centering, full-range adaptive cruise, BLIS with steer assist, cross-traffic alert with autobrake, run-off-road and oncoming-lane mitigation. Only the 360-degree camera and Park Assist Pilot are held back to Plus and Ultra.

Automatic emergency braking performance68
#21 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

IIHS graded the 2026 XC90 Acceptable — not Good — in both the tougher vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention 2.0 evaluation and the pedestrian evaluation, so real-world AEB performance is solid but a step behind the segment's best and it is what costs the car its TSP+.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage88
#3 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

BLIS blind-spot monitoring with steer assist — active steering intervention, not alert-only — is standard on every trim, paired with standard cross traffic alert that can brake autonomously when reversing out of a space.

Lane keeping & centering80
#8 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Pilot Assist is standard across the range and reviewers describe the centering as smooth and unobtrusive rather than ping-ponging, but it is conservative — it needs clear lane markings, backs out readily on faded lines, and nags for steering torque sooner than rival systems.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist82
#14 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Full-speed-range adaptive cruise with stop-and-go is standard and integrates cleanly with Pilot Assist steering into a single well-behaved highway assist; braking and resume are refined, though the system is tuned for large following gaps and is slower to close on traffic than German rivals.

Hands-free driving availability15
#14 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

No hands-free option exists on the XC90 at any trim or price. Pilot Assist is an explicitly hands-on system, and Volvo's eyes-off Ride Pilot has not launched and was never slated for the SPA-platform XC90.

Headlight performance92
#1 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates the headlights Good on every 2026 XC90 trim — no Acceptable-rated volume-trim variant to trip over — with the 2025.5 facelift's revised LED units and adaptive high beam carried into 2026 unchanged.

Outward visibility88
#1 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

One of the better sightline packages in the class — upright glasshouse, low hood and beltline, slim pillars and usable rear quarter windows — with a surround-view camera and Park Assist filling in from Plus upward, though the base Core makes do with the reversing camera and sensors alone.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability66
#22 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

IIHS calls LATCH ease of use only Acceptable: lower anchors are limited to the two outboard second-row positions and the third row has no lower anchors and just one top tether on the passenger side, so the way-back can take boosters but not much else. Wide rear doors and an available integrated booster in the second-row centre seat partly offset it.

4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.10C
Seating capacity
7 seats standard (6 with optional second-row captain's chairs)
75/100
#1 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Third-row seating has been standard on every US XC90 since the 2018 model year, giving a 2+3+2 seven-seat layout on Core, Plus and Ultra; second-row captain's chairs are a no-cost-to-capacity option that drops it to six.

Front headroom
38.9 in
38/100
#18 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Unchanged for 2026 — the 2024 facelift (MY2025) reworked the fascias, screen and insulation but not the SPA body structure, so the interior dimensions carry over.

Front legroom
40.9 in
20/100
#14 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

40.9 in is modest for a mid-size three-row SUV — the XC90's 117.5 in wheelbase is shorter than most three-row rivals and the front seats sit relatively upright.

Rear headroom
38.5 in (second row)
63/100
#13 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

38.5 in of second-row headroom is generous for the class and reflects the XC90's tall, boxy roofline; it survives the standard panoramic roof.

Rear legroom
37.0 in (second row, sliding bench)
58/100
#20 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The second row slides fore/aft to trade legroom with the third row; 37.0 in is the published figure and is mid-pack — well short of the Lincoln Aviator or Infiniti QX60 but adequate for adults.

Third-row usability58
#5 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A genuine but small third row: 31.9 in legroom and 36.3 in headroom, with cupholders and its own vents, is fine for children and tolerable for a six-foot adult on short hops only. Access via the sliding second row is easy, which keeps it above token seating.

Cargo/trunk volume
34.6 cu ft behind the second row (third row folded); 10.6 cu ft behind the third row
17/100
#12 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The XC90's weakest practicality number by far — 34.6 cu ft with the third row down is small for a three-row SUV, and only 10.6 cu ft remains with all seven seats in use.

Max cargo volume
85.7 cu ft with second and third rows folded
68/100
#2 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

With both rear rows folded flat the XC90 opens up to a competitive 85.7 cu ft — the second row's three individual sections fold flat separately, so partial-load flexibility is good.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions66
#11 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Competent rather than clever: the 2024 facelift added interior storage volume, a repositioned wireless charging pad and redesigned console, and the three-section fold-flat second row plus integrated child booster cushion are genuinely useful. But there is no standout innovation — no giga-console, underfloor bin or onboard power export.

Seat comfort82
#12 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo's orthopedic-style seats remain a segment benchmark: firm but fatigue-resistant over long stints, with adjustable lumbar, thigh extension and (on Ultra) power side bolsters and ventilation. Massage is a $1,700 Lounge package extra rather than standard, and mid-trim cars go without ventilation.

Ride quality78
#13 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Serene and well-damped, with revised dampers for the facelifted car and optional air suspension that reads the road continuously; it stops short of the segment's best because air springs are a $1,800 option and the 21/22-inch wheels on upper trims add some sharpness over broken pavement.

Cabin quietness80
#17 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2024 facelift explicitly added sound insulation using lessons from the EX90, and reviewers of the 2026 car describe a notably quiet, low-road-noise cabin; the four-cylinder B-series engines are the limiting factor when pushed, which keeps it below the electric EX90 and the V8/V6 luxury benchmarks.

Climate & comfort features80
#17 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Strong standard content: quad-zone automatic climate control, heated steering wheel, heated front seats, panoramic roof with power sunshade and Volvo's air purifier are standard from the Core trim, with second-row vents and controls. Ventilated fronts arrive only on Ultra and massage is a package option, which is why it isn't top-band.

5Cost of OwnershipThe XC90's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Base MSRP
$62,345 (B5 AWD Core 7-seater, incl. $1,295 destination)
7/100
#10 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

2026 is a carry-over year for the second-generation XC90 following the September 2024 facelift (new fascia, 11.2-inch touchscreen, added sound insulation) that arrived for MY2025; the entry B5 AWD Core mild hybrid opens at $61,050 before a $1,295 destination charge.

Volume-Trim Price
$66,345 (B5 AWD Plus 7-seater, incl. destination); range $62,345–$85,990 from B5 Core to T8 Ultra Dark Theme
4/100
#9 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The mid-grade B5 Plus is the XC90's volume configuration — Core is a thinly equipped entry point, the B6 twincharger adds roughly $3,700 and the T8 plug-in adds well over $12,000 — putting the typical transaction near $66,300 before options.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$6,900 over 5 years (source estimates $4,199–$9,555)
40/100
#11 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The two authoritative projections diverge by more than 2x — CarEdge is comparatively mild, Edmunds far harsher — so the blended figure lands mid-band for a large luxury SUV, with the mass, brake wear and optional air suspension of a three-row Volvo arguing against the low end.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~45% of MSRP retained at 5 years (gas ~46%, T8 plug-in ~43%)
17/100
#11 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The XC90 sheds well over half its value in five years — squarely on the large-luxury-SUV average but poor in absolute terms, and the run-out status of a body on sale since 2015 alongside its own EX90 successor gives the residual no support.

Basic warranty
4 years / 50,000 miles
50/100
#2 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years or 50,000 miles — a year longer than the mainstream norm and matched to the German luxury standard.

Powertrain warranty
4 years / 50,000 miles (no separate extended powertrain term); 8 yr / 100,000 mi PHEV high-voltage battery
0/100
#14 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo offers no standalone powertrain warranty in the US — engine and drivetrain are covered only for the concurrent 4 yr/50,000 mi basic term, the weakest structure in the segment and less than half what Genesis or Hyundai provide.

Complimentary maintenance & perks73
#5 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

For MY2026 Volvo cut complimentary factory scheduled maintenance to 2 years / 20,000 miles (the 10,000- and 20,000-mile services, one per year) from the 3 yr / 36,000 mi program that covered 2021–2025.5 cars — still real multi-year coverage, but now a step behind BMW's and Audi's three-year programs. Four years of unlimited-mileage roadside assistance, 12-year corrosion coverage and Google built-in with an included connected-services trial round out a solid rather than class-leading package.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$43,390 (≈$36,490 depreciation + $6,900 maintenance)
18/100
#6 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

$66,345 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (45% retained, or about $29,855) leaves about $36,490 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,900 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $43,390 in total.

6Reliability & QualityGrades below the middle of the scale.1.61D
Predicted reliability55
#14 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Consumer Reports predicts about-average reliability for the 2026 XC90, but the quantitative sources sit below average: U.S. News rates predicted reliability 68/100 (their 'Fair' band, below average) and RepairPal places the nameplate mid-to-lower in the luxury mid-size class with above-average repair frequency.

Brand reliability track record35
#19 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo sits second-to-last in the most recent J.D. Power dependability study with a score that deteriorated sharply year over year, and it is near the bottom in initial quality as well; only Consumer Reports still has the brand mid-pack, which is not enough to lift it out of the bottom third.

Recall & TSB history45
#18 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2026 XC90 already carries two NHTSA recalls within months of launch — one of them a loss-of-braking defect on the plug-in hybrid that spans the entire 2020-2026 run, the other a production assembly error on seat belt retractors — layered on top of a 413,000-vehicle rearview-camera software recall covering earlier XC90s with Google built-in.

Powertrain durability reputation60
#15 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The volume B6 combination — the long-running 2.0L VEA four with both a supercharger and turbocharger, a 48V integrated starter-generator and the Aisin eight-speed — is a mature, widely deployed family with no systemic high-mileage failure pattern, though it is a mechanically busy way to move a 4,700-lb three-row SUV; the T8's historically weak point has been materially redesigned but not yet proven at high mileage.

Interior material quality87
#10 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Cabin materials are the XC90's strongest suit and remain class-leading against the GLE, X5 and Q7 — the 2025 facelift carried into 2026 added richer surfaces and recycled-content trim, and the signature details (Orrefors crystal shifter, wood and metal inlays, B&W audio) read as genuinely expensive rather than decorated.

Fit & finish58
#20 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Assembly reads as solid and rattle-free in reviews and owner feedback, and this is a nameplate on a mature platform in its eleventh year, but the objective initial-quality evidence is poor and one of the two 2026 recalls is an outright production-line defect on safety hardware.

Dealer & service network58
#17 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo's US retailer footprint is adequate in metro areas but thin nationally against the German luxury brands and far sparser than mass-market alternatives, leaving rural owners long drives for warranty work; the 2026 cut to complimentary maintenance trims the ownership-support package further.

Parts availability & repair cost50
#15 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Repair spend runs above the segment norm and repair frequency is no better than class average, with parts largely dealer-channel and European-sourced against a thin independent aftermarket; the T8's hybrid-specific components are genuinely expensive once out of warranty.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the XC90's strongest categories.3.01B
Touchscreen size
11.2 in (standard on all trims — Core, Plus, Ultra)
49/100
#19 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2024 facelift (MY2025) replaced the long-serving 9-inch portrait Sensus screen with an 11.2-inch vertical display running Google built-in; 2026 carries it over on every trim with no larger option.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness75
#19 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Google built-in is one of the better native systems — Maps, Assistant and Play Store are fast and logically laid out, and 2026's updated software is brighter and quicker than 2025's — but nearly everything including climate lives in the touchscreen, and reviewers still flag distraction and occasional software bugs.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto55
#22 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard across the range, but wired only — Volvo does not offer wireless phone projection on any 2026 XC90 trim, a real gap against BMW, Genesis and Lincoln rivals in this segment.

Voice control & native navigation92
#3 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Google Assistant handles genuinely natural-language commands for navigation, climate and media, and Google Maps is the embedded native navigation with live traffic — the benchmark for built-in nav, and one of the few systems owners prefer over phone projection.

Audio system quality90
#4 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The optional 1,400W, 15-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system with its body-integrated subwoofer remains one of the best audio systems fitted to any SUV, with a 14-speaker Harman Kardon setup standard on Ultra and a competent base system below it.

Digital instrument cluster84
#19 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A crisp 12.3-inch fully digital driver display is standard on every trim including base Core, with a Google Maps view available directly in the cluster; configurability is narrower than Audi's Virtual Cockpit or BMW's curved display.

OTA update capability88
#4 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo delivers free whole-vehicle over-the-air updates to XC90s on the Android-based system — not just maps — and has shipped feature-adding campaigns across the fleet; the 2026 software improvements themselves reach earlier facelift cars this way.

Companion app & remote functions72

The Volvo Cars app covers remote start, cabin preconditioning, lock/unlock, locate and vehicle status with four years of connected services included, but the phone-as-key digital key Volvo now offers via Apple and Samsung Wallet is confined to the newer EX-series cars, and app-to-car connection reliability draws owner complaints.

Charging ports & device power66
#23 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Four USB-C ports (two front, two second row) plus a wireless charging pad standard from base Core is adequate but not generous for a seven-seater — the third row gets no power, and there is no household AC outlet.

Keyless & remote access78
#18 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Proximity keyless entry with push-button start is standard on every trim, the power tailgate opens hands-free with a foot kick, and remote start comes through the app — but there is no phone-as-key on the XC90.

Camera & parking aids82
#16 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A 360-degree surround-view camera with front, rear and side park assist sensors is standard from the Plus trim up — covering the volume configurations — along with Park Assist Pilot semi-automated parking; base Core makes do with the rear camera, and resolution trails the best German systems.

Head-up display availability58
#23 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The head-up display is reserved for the top Ultra trim, where it is standard — it cannot be optioned onto Core or Plus, so most XC90 buyers go without.

Kid & car-seat practicality85
#2 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Purpose-built for family logistics: seven seats standard, a second row that slides and tumbles for genuinely easy third-row access, tall square door openings onto an upright 40/20/40 bench, and Volvo's integrated pop-up booster cushion in the center second-row seat — a feature no rival offers, though it starts at Plus rather than Core. Held out of the top band by the IIHS Acceptable LATCH ease-of-use rating and by the small hold behind row three, which forces a choice between the sixth and seventh seats and a stroller.

Family safety package89
#2 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The strongest family-safety case in Volvo's own lineup for 2026: a 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick with Good in every crashworthiness test including the updated side and moderate-overlap protocols, Good headlights, Good seat belt reminders, and five stars overall from NHTSA. Adaptive cruise, City Safety autobrake, blind-spot monitoring with steer assist and rear cross-traffic alert are standard across all trims, so the $62k Core is not stripped of the content families need. Short of the 90s because both front crash prevention tests come back only Acceptable — which is exactly what costs it the TSP+ — and the surround-view camera waits for Plus.

Family road-trip comfort84
#3 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A properly equipped long-haul family box: four-zone climate control is standard on every trim, the second row slides to trade legroom between rows two and three, the 2024 facelift's extra sound insulation makes the cabin notably hushed, and 451 miles of range in the B5 (about 530 in the T8) keeps stops rare. Rear sunshades come with the Ultra. What keeps it out of the 90s is the third row — 31.9 in of legroom is tight for adults — the very small cargo bay when all seven seats are occupied, and the absence of any rear-seat entertainment option at any price.

Daily driving ease78
#15 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Low-effort and calm in traffic — light steering, an unobtrusive 8-speed, seats that suit a long slog, and adaptive cruise standard on every trim (with full Pilot Assist lane centering on the T8). The facelift's 11.2-inch Snapdragon-based screen is far quicker than the old 9-inch Sensus unit. Marked down for the things reviewers consistently flag as daily irritants: too many functions buried in the touchscreen, software that still misbehaves, no Android Auto at all, unhurried throttle response, and a 195-inch body that simply asks more of the driver in traffic than a two-row rival.

Commuting cost efficiency54
#13 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Expensive per mile. The volume mild hybrids return 24 MPG combined (B5) and 23 (B6) on required premium fuel — the B6 carries a $3,300/yr EPA fuel estimate at 15,000 miles — and the 48V system does none of the stop-and-go electric work a full hybrid would. Service is luxury-priced: RepairPal puts XC90 repair and maintenance at $851/yr, above the $807 luxury-midsize average, on 21-inch tires. The T8's 32–33 EPA electric miles genuinely covers a typical US commute on grid power, but that powertrain starts at $77,495 and is not the volume configuration being scored.

Parking & maneuverability66
#8 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Manageable rather than easy. At 195.0 in long and 79.1 in wide this is a full three-row footprint that eats a city parking bay, and the standard 21-inch wheels on Plus and up make curbing an expensive mistake. Working in its favor: a roughly 38.7 ft turning circle that is tight for the size, the boxy Volvo greenhouse with a low beltline and large glass that gives far better over-the-shoulder sightlines than the coupe-roofed alternatives, and front and rear parking sensors with a rear camera standard from Core. The 360-degree surround-view camera — the feature that would most help here — requires stepping up to Plus.

Work capability55
#14 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Light-to-moderate duty only, and behind the class benchmark. The B6 and T8 pull 5,000 lbs with a Class III factory hitch and the B5 4,000 lbs — enough for a small boat, a two-place snowmobile trailer or a landscaping trailer, but the BMW X5, Audi Q7 and Mercedes GLE all rate 7,200–7,700 lbs from the same segment. There is no bed and no work-oriented payload headroom; the 455-hp T8 adds real thrust under load without raising the rating a pound.

Durability for work duty52
#10 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The SPA platform and the 2.0-liter four have eleven years of production behind them, so the hardware itself is well-sorted, but the ownership record does not say fleet-tough: RepairPal rates the XC90 3.5 of 5 and ranks it 8th of 14 luxury midsize SUVs, noting repair frequency above normal. Everything about the cabin is aimed at the opposite of work duty — Nappa leather or textile upholstery, 20–22-inch wheels on low-profile tires, screen-dependent controls, no washable trim option and no commercial or fleet variant anywhere in the lineup.

Jobsite & upfit practicality46
#10 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The basics, and only the basics. A 12V socket in the console and another in the luggage compartment, standard roof rails rated for 220 lbs of dynamic load, a hands-free power tailgate, a folding cargo divider, underfloor storage and Volvo's accessory rubber load mats and dirt covers, plus a factory tow bar for a hitch carrier. There is no bed, no AC inverter or vehicle-to-load power export at any trim, no tool-oriented tie-down system, and no commercial upfit ecosystem behind the car.

Long-distance comfort & range85
#11 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The XC90's best mission by a distance. The facelift's added sound insulation and the optional air suspension produce a cabin reviewers describe as gliding and genuinely quiet, seven people travel in four-zone climate, and 451 miles in the B5 (roughly 530 in the T8) means long legs between fuel stops. Adaptive cruise is standard on every trim and the T8 adds full Pilot Assist lane centering to carry the highway workload. Not top-band because there is no hands-free highway mode, the air suspension that best settles the ride is an extra, and at least one first-drive found the front seats firmer than Volvo's usual standard.

Outdoor & adventure capability79
#3 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A strong gravel-road, ski-hill and trailhead vehicle: AWD is standard on every trim with no front-drive version sold, the optional adaptive air suspension raises ground clearance from 8.3 to 9.9 in, an Off Road drive mode with hill descent control handles snow and unpaved surfaces, and 5,000 lbs of towing covers a pair of dirt bikes or a small boat. The standard roof rails take 220 lbs and hook straight into Volvo's own and Thule's carrier ecosystem for boxes, bikes and kayaks. It stops short of real off-road hardware — no low range, no locking differentials, no skid plating, road-biased tires — and offers no external power export for camping.

Gear & luggage flexibility84
#1 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

With rows two and three down the XC90 opens into 85.7 cu ft behind a flat, wall-to-wall floor — near the top of the mid-size luxury class — and 41.8 cu ft with just the third row folded still swallows a family's luggage. The 40/20/40 second row and split third row fold at the pull of a lever, a hands-free power tailgate, underfloor storage, a folding grocery divider, standard roof rails and an available factory tow bar cover the bulky stuff. The single real limit is the hold with all seven seats occupied: 15.8 cu ft on paper and closer to 10 in practice is not much more than a sedan's trunk.

Handling & agility67
#19 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Secure, composed and comfort-biased rather than agile: the second-generation SPA chassis is now a decade old and the 2025.5 refresh carried into 2026 changed styling, tech, sound deadening and suspension tuning but not the fundamental architecture. Available Active Chassis air suspension smothers bumps well and 21-inch wheels help turn-in, but grip and body control trail the German mid-size benchmarks.

Steering feel68
#12 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Accurate and naturally weighted — reviewers consistently praise the precision and the well-judged effort build-up — but the electric rack filters out road texture, so it is precise without being communicative. Selectable steering effort settings change weight more than feedback.

Braking confidence58
#23 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The weakest dynamic trait. Pedal feel and regen blending are good — the T8's one-pedal mode and its blended friction/regen handoff are smooth and predictable — but measured stopping distances are long for a luxury mid-size SUV, a consequence of ~5,100 lb of PHEV curb weight on all-season rubber.

Powertrain smoothness & response73
#16 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Two very different characters under one badge. The T8 PHEV (455 hp / 523 lb-ft, 5.2 s to 60 mph as tested) delivers instant, seamless electric-assisted thrust with well-masked engine start-up; the volume B5 mild-hybrid (247 hp, ~7.3 s) is adequate but leans on the eight-speed Aisin automatic, whose kickdown and 48-volt stop/start restarts are occasionally noticeable. No fundamental driveline roughness either way.

Drivetrain noise & vibration70
#20 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The 2025.5 refresh added meaningful sound insulation and the cabin is genuinely hushed at a cruise, with the T8 able to run silently on electric power. The limiting factor is character: every XC90 is a 2.0-liter four-cylinder, and it sounds strained and buzzy under hard throttle where a six-cylinder rival stays smooth.

Turning circle
40.0 ft curb-to-curb (12.2 m)
25/100
#12 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Wide for the segment — a consequence of the 117.5-inch wheelbase and 20- to 22-inch wheels — making tight parking structures and U-turns a two-bite affair.

Driving position & ergonomics78
#12 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

A long-standing XC90 strength: excellent, widely adjustable orthopedically designed seats, a commanding seating position, thin pillars and genuinely good outward visibility for a three-row SUV. The deduction is for function migration into the 11.2-inch Google-based touchscreen — climate and most vehicle settings live there, with few physical shortcuts.

Fun-to-drive factor56
#20 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Pleasant and effortless but not engaging — no sport-tuned variant is offered in the US for 2026, the four-cylinder soundtrack is anonymous, and the whole car is tuned to isolate rather than involve. The T8's straight-line shove is the only real thrill. Nobody buys an XC90 for the long way home.

10Value & Market PositionOne of the XC90's strongest categories.3.09B
Standard equipment generosity80
#5 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Even the B5 Core arrives with AWD, three rows of seats, a panoramic roof, quad-zone climate, heated front seats and a heated steering wheel, the 11.2-inch Google built-in screen with navigation, a 12.3-inch cluster, wireless charging and the full IntelliSafe driver-assist suite — content that a base Audi Q7, BMW X5 or GLE routinely charges thousands more to match. Ventilated seats, Nappa leather, air suspension, head-up display and the premium audio still sit behind Plus/Ultra, so it is generously equipped rather than fully loaded.

Feature value per dollar68
#13 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The XC90 undercuts a comparably equipped X5, GLE or Q7 and adds three years of complimentary maintenance, but the $62,445 entry buys only 247 hp and a 7.3-second 0–60, and the genuinely quick T8 is walled off above $76,000 — a steep step. Efficiency also disappoints for a mild hybrid at 23–24 mpg combined, and Edmunds' 6.4/10 reflects a car whose content-for-price is fair rather than a bargain.

Trim & configuration breadth82
#5 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Three trims (Core/Plus/Ultra) are each offered with three powertrains — the 247-hp B5 and 295-hp B6 mild hybrids and the 455-hp T8 plug-in hybrid — plus 5-, 6- and 7-seat layouts, Bright and Dark theme treatments and an optional air suspension, spanning roughly $62,000 to $85,000. That is unusually wide budget-to-loaded coverage; the limits are Volvo's packaged-option approach and AWD-only, single-body-style simplicity.

Sales popularity & market acceptance82
#5 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

The XC90 sold 40,217 units in the US in 2025 — up 2% and the best year in the nameplate's 23-year history, the first time it has cleared 40,000 — which is a remarkable trajectory for a design entering its second decade and one whose electric successor is already on sale. It trails class volume leaders like the BMW X5 but is unambiguously a strong, rising seller.

Brand desirability & image72
#14 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo carries a real safety halo and widely admired Scandinavian design, and the XC90 is the model that anchors that image as the brand's long-standing US flagship. The badge still reads sensible rather than aspirational next to the German three, resale is only class-average, and a poor 2026 J.D. Power dependability finish undercuts the premium positioning.

Deals & incentive availability82
#4 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Volvo funds the XC90 with real, publicly advertised money — lease cash, subvented financing and a finance bonus running concurrently — and transaction data shows buyers routinely landing several thousand below sticker. On a model posting record sales that reads as normal luxury-segment support rather than distress pricing, which is exactly the buyer benefit this item rewards.

Model freshness50
#21 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

This is the XC90's weakest dimension: the second generation launched for 2015 on SPA, and 2026 is a carry-over year following the September 2024 (2025 model year) second facelift, so the underlying platform is over a decade old. Volvo has already launched the EX90 as its nominal successor and is only selling the two side by side 'for the foreseeable future' — the new front end and 11.2-inch screen keep it current-looking, but a buyer is purchasing a very mature design with no clean-sheet replacement promised.

Critical reception & awards80
#5 of 23 Mid-Size Luxury SUVsCompare all →

Car and Driver rates it 9.5/10, names it an Editors' Choice and ranks it first among mid-size three-row luxury SUVs, and both the gas and plug-in versions took 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick alongside a five-star NHTSA rating. U.S. News is warm but less enthusiastic at 8.7/10 and only #9 in the class, and Edmunds' 6.4/10 is a genuine dissent on tech and value — well-regarded and frequently the pick, but not a unanimous class winner.
