The verdict
A struggling luxury coupe, strong on driving and held back by safety.
The 2017 4 Series is a well-balanced rear-drive luxury coupe. It handles sharply, its new 248-hp 430i turbo four is strong and paired with a superb 8-speed automatic, and it has a surprisingly usable 33.7-inch rear seat and a 15.7 cu ft trunk. The weak spots are safety and tech. NHTSA and IIHS never crash-tested this coupe, driver-assist features and even the rear camera cost extra, and it predates the 2018 refresh, so the base screen is a 6.5-inch non-touch display. As a used buy it suits drivers who care about how the car feels on the road, as long as they budget for premium fuel and BMW repair bills once the warranty is long gone.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.88C-
2017 is a powertrain change year for the F32: the 428i and 435i were replaced by the 430i and 440i. The volume 430i's new 2.0L turbo four makes 248 hp, up from the 428i's 240 hp, and the 440i's new 3.0L turbo inline-six makes 320 hp.
The 430i's turbo four makes 258 lb-ft across a broad low-to-mid-rpm plateau. The 440i's inline-six raises that to 330 lb-ft.
Published estimates for the RWD automatic 430i Coupe run 5.5–5.6 s, while instrumented tests of the F32 430i land near 6 s. 5.8 s is a fair representative figure. The 440i runs in the high 4s.
The new B46 turbo four in the 430i pulls strongly from low rpm with little lag, but it sounds grainier than the silky 440i six, and the auto stop-start can be abrupt.
The ZF-sourced 8-speed Steptronic automatic shifts quickly and smoothly with good gear logic. A 6-speed manual was still offered on the RWD 430i and on the 440i (RWD and xDrive), which is rare in the class.
xDrive AWD is optional on both the 430i and 440i Coupe, so it is widely available. It is a conventional rear-biased system with no torque vectoring or terrain modes.
There are two gas engines (turbo four and turbo six), plus the separately badged M4. Each comes with a manual or automatic and with RWD or AWD, but there is no hybrid, PHEV or EV option.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the 4 Series's weakest categories.0.04F
This is the EPA combined rating for the volume 2017 430i Coupe with the 8-speed automatic and RWD.
This is the EPA city rating for the 2017 430i Coupe with the automatic, 1 MPG below the 2018 rating.
This is the EPA highway rating for the 2017 430i Coupe with the automatic, which is strong for a luxury coupe thanks to the tall 8th gear.
Computed from the F32 Coupe's 15.8-gallon tank and the EPA combined 27 MPG.
This is EPA's current published annual fuel cost for the 2017 430i Coupe automatic at 15,000 mi/yr on premium fuel.
Every 2017 4 Series Coupe (430i and 440i, RWD or xDrive) is rated on premium unleaded. There is no regular-fuel or electrified alternative.
3SafetyThe 4 Series's lowest-graded category.0.00F
NHTSA never crash-tested the 2017 F32 4 Series Coupe. Its overall, frontal, side and rollover ratings are all listed as Not Rated for both drivetrains, so the framework scores it 0.
IIHS never tested the F32 4 Series Coupe, so it has no award and no crashworthiness ratings. Its F30 3 Series sedan platform-mate earned all-Good results and a 2017 TSP+, but that result doesn't transfer to the coupe body. The only crash data for this body is Euro NCAP's 5-star rating.
On the 2017 430i the only standard driver aids are a rearview camera, rear Park Distance Control and stability control. Forward-collision warning with low-speed City Collision Mitigation, lane departure warning, blind-spot detection and Active Cruise Control are all optional, mostly through the Driver Assistance Plus package.
AEB is optional only. It is the low-speed City Collision Mitigation system in Active Driving Assistant, which adds daytime pedestrian warning but has no full-speed or nighttime pedestrian capability. IIHS never rated it on this coupe; the same system on the 3 Series sedan cut impact speed only modestly.
Active Blind Spot Detection is optional on every trim. Rear cross-traffic alert depends on optional parking and camera packages, and there is no rear automatic braking or safe-exit alert.
The F32 offers only an optional lane departure warning, which vibrates the steering wheel. Steering-assisted lane keeping and centering didn't reach the 4 Series until the 2021 G22 generation.
Optional Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go works across the full speed range. Without lane centering to pair it with there is no highway-assist function, and the ACC-linked collision mitigation was rated only Basic by IIHS on the F30 sibling.
The 2017 4 Series offered no hands-free driving system, and not even hands-on lane centering.
IIHS never rated the 4 Series coupe's headlights. Pre-refresh 2017 cars use xenon units as standard, with adaptive full-LED lights and high-beam assist optional; on the F30 sibling only the adaptive LEDs reached Acceptable while non-adaptive units rated Poor.
Forward sightlines are good for a coupe thanks to the low cowl and slim A-pillars. The wide C-pillars and fastback roofline limit the over-the-shoulder view. A rear camera is standard, while side and top-view cameras are optional.
The coupe has two rear seats, each with LATCH anchors, but getting to them means climbing past the front seats through long doors. The rear quarters are tight for a rear-facing seat, and IIHS rated the F30 sibling's LATCH hardware Poor/Marginal for buried anchors.
4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.96C-
The F32 4 Series Coupe is a strict four-seater with two individual rear seats, which puts it at the bottom of the coupe seating band.
Front headroom is generous for a low coupe, near the top of the segment band, despite the standard sunroof on the 2017 430i.
Front legroom is mid-pack for the class and comfortable for tall drivers.
Rear headroom is decent for a fastback coupe, though taller adults will brush the sloping roofline.
The 3 Series-derived 110.6-in wheelbase gives more rear legroom than most coupes, so adults fit for short-to-medium trips. Getting in still means climbing past a tilted front seat.
The trunk is large for a two-door, matching many compact sedans, and the standard fold-down rear seatbacks take longer items.
Everyday storage is adequate: door pockets, a modest console bin, cupholders ahead of the shifter and a usable glovebox. The long coupe doors limit pocket usefulness, and there are no novel storage features.
The standard power front sport seats with driver memory are supportive and widely adjustable, and adjustable bolsters and thigh extensions help on long drives. The rear buckets are comfortable but upright and confining for adults.
The ride is firm but well damped. Standard run-flat tires and the M Sport suspension add harshness over sharp impacts, while the optional adaptive dampers soften it in Comfort mode.
Wind noise is well managed, but run-flat tires send noticeable road roar into the cabin on coarse pavement, and the 430i's new B46 four sounds grainy when worked hard.
Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard. Heated front seats and a heated wheel cost extra, and ventilated seats and remote pre-conditioning were not offered on the US F32.
5Cost of OwnershipGrades below the middle of the scale.1.07D
2017 was the year the B46/B58 engines replaced the 428i/435i with the 430i/440i. Edmunds lists the entry 430i rear-drive Coupe at about $42,150 including destination, roughly $2,100 below the refreshed 2018.
The volume configuration is the 430i xDrive Coupe at $44,150 with destination. Most were ordered with the Premium package (navigation was optional in 2017), Convenience/Driver Assistance and metallic paint, adding roughly $4,000–5,500.
BMW Ultimate Care (new for MY2017) covered scheduled service for 3 years/36,000 miles, after which years four and five carry typical turbocharged-BMW repair exposure once the 4/50 warranty ends. Blended estimate consistent with the same-generation 2018.
About average for a German luxury coupe. A 2017 bought new reached year five in the inflated 2022 used market, but heavy lease-return volume and the pre-LCI styling weigh slightly against the 2018.
BMW's New Vehicle Limited Warranty ran 4 years or 50,000 miles, a year longer than mainstream 3/36 coverage and typical of German luxury brands.
Powertrain coverage sat inside the same 4-year/50,000-mile factory warranty with no extended term, short against the 5/60 to 10/100 coverage common elsewhere.
MY2017 introduced BMW Ultimate Care: 3 years/36,000 miles of scheduled maintenance, replacing the previous 4-year/50,000-mile Maintenance Program, plus 4 years of unlimited-mile roadside assistance and a BMW Assist trial. Meaningful coverage, but a year shorter than what 2016 buyers got.
$49,200 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (50% retained, or about $24,600) leaves about $24,600 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $31,100 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the 4 Series's strongest categories.2.88B-
2017 is a mid-cycle year of the F32 generation (2014–2020) and the first year of the 430i/440i, which replaced the 428i/435i with the new B46/B48 and B58 engines. The sources split sharply: J.D. Power rates it 'Great' and gave it a quality award, while Consumer Reports owner data flags the 2017 as a weak year, with engine and cooling-system trouble spots. That puts it in the middle of the average band.
Through the late 2010s BMW was a mid-pack brand: near the industry average in J.D. Power's VDS and in the middle of Consumer Reports' brand rankings. That is ahead of most European luxury rivals but well behind Lexus and Toyota.
Two NHTSA campaigns cover the 2017 4 Series. Both are small, supplier-driven airbag initiator/inflator fixes shared across the BMW range, affecting a few thousand cars in total. There are no powertrain, fire, do-not-drive or park-outside campaigns. Because a safety system is involved, this sits at the low end of the top band.
The volume 430i uses the B46/B48 2.0L turbo four, new to the 4 Series for 2017. It dropped the N20's timing-chain-guide weakness and pairs with the proven ZF 8HP automatic, and the 440i's B58 six is regarded as one of BMW's most durable modern engines. The score is held down by Consumer Reports' engine and cooling flags for this year and by the well-known plastic coolant-pipe, water-pump and oil-gasket leaks.
The cabin is well built, with solid switchgear. This is the pre-2018-update interior, though, with older trim and iDrive, and SensaTec vinyl was standard. Reviewers found it dated next to the all-new 2018 Audi A5 and the Mercedes C-Class Coupe.
By its fourth production year F32 assembly was well sorted, and the 2017 4 Series won a J.D. Power quality award for few early-ownership problems. Owner complaints about trim rattles are scattered rather than systemic.
BMW had about 340 US retailers, dense in metro and suburban areas and thinner in rural ones, and its service satisfaction was at or above the premium-brand average. 2017 models came with BMW Ultimate Care: 3 years/36,000 miles of free scheduled maintenance.
Parts are abundant because the F32 shares its powertrains and most hardware with the high-volume F30 3 Series, and the BMW aftermarket is deep. Out-of-warranty repair costs are well above mainstream norms, and a 2017 car is now long past its warranty and maintenance coverage.
7Technology & InfotainmentGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.92F
The volume 430i came standard with a 6.5-in iDrive display operated by the rotary controller. The 8.8-in screen required the optional Navigation Professional, and 2017 predated the 2018 refresh that brought touch input.
iDrive was among the better systems of its day, with a rotary controller, programmable shortcut buttons and quick responses. The small base screen and deep menus hold it back.
Wireless Apple CarPlay was an option only on cars that also had Navigation Professional, and Android Auto was not offered at all.
Navigation was optional on the 2017 430i. Where fitted, BMW Navigation Professional is capable, but voice control needs structured commands.
The standard 9-speaker system is adequate, and the 16-speaker Harman Kardon system (standard on the 440i, optional on the 430i) is a solid upgrade.
The pre-refresh 2017 cluster uses analog dials with a small info display. The improved cluster came with the 2018 update, and full-digital gauges arrived only with the G22.
ConnectedDrive on navigation-equipped cars offered over-the-air map updates and traffic data. Vehicle software updates required a dealer visit.
BMW Remote Services and the BMW Connected app offer remote lock/unlock, horn and lights, and vehicle finder. There is no remote engine start or digital key.
The cabin has a USB-A audio port and 12V sockets with no USB-C. Wireless charging was a costly option, and rear passengers get essentially no device power.
Push-button start is standard. Comfort Access keyless entry is standard on the 440i but optional on the volume 430i, and there is no factory remote start or phone-as-key.
On this 2017 luxury car even the rearview camera cost extra: it and Park Distance Control came in the Driver Assistance Package. Top- and side-view cameras needed Driver Assistance Plus.
A full-color head-up display was available as an option across 4 Series trims, but it was not standard on the volume 430i.
8Use-Case FitOne of the 4 Series's weakest categories.0.65F
With two doors, loading a child seat means tilting the front seat and reaching into a low rear seat. LATCH anchors are present in both rear seats, but daily family logistics are a chore.
The structure is solid, but on the 2017 430i even the rearview camera was optional. Forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning and blind-spot monitoring all needed the Driver Assistance Plus package.
The 15.7 cu ft trunk and decent rear legroom help, but rear amenities are thin, with no rear USB and a fixed four-seat layout with tight rear entry.
Low-end turbo torque from the new 248-hp four, a smooth 8-speed automatic and a good driving position make traffic easy. A firm run-flat ride, abrupt stop-start and long coupe doors are minor annoyances.
Mid-to-high-20s combined MPG is reasonable for the class, but premium fuel and costly BMW maintenance after the free-maintenance window push per-mile costs above average.
The 182.6-in length and 37.1-ft turning circle are manageable, but the rear camera and parking sensors were optional for 2017. Long doors and a limited rear three-quarter view complicate tight parking.
The 4 Series has no US tow rating and modest payload. It is a two-door luxury coupe with no work role.
This luxury-oriented car has leatherette or leather upholstery, low ride height and expensive repairs, and it is not suited to abuse.
There is no onboard power, no tie-down ecosystem, no factory hitch and no upfit support.
It is a capable highway tourer with supportive seats, stability and 400+ miles of highway range from a 15.8-gal tank. Run-flat road noise, a firm ride and adaptive cruise available only in a package limit endurance.
Available xDrive AWD makes it secure on snowy or gravel roads, but low ground clearance and no tow rating leave it pavement-oriented.
The 15.7 cu ft trunk swallows normal luggage, and the standard fold-down rear seatbacks allow long items. The trunk opening is narrow, and there are no roof rails or factory hitch.
9Driving ExperienceThe 4 Series's best-graded category.3.03B
The 4 Series has balanced rear-drive handling, a low center of gravity and tight body control, especially with the M Sport or adaptive suspension. It is among the sharpest luxury coupes short of an M car, though the stiffer LCI suspension tuning only arrived for 2018.
The electric power steering is precise and well weighted but transmits little road feel, a common criticism of F-generation BMWs compared with their hydraulic predecessors.
The brakes have a firm, progressive pedal and short stops, and the optional M Sport brakes add fade resistance. Instrumented 60–0 tests of the F32 coupe land around 110–115 ft.
The 430i's new B46 turbo four, new for 2017, pulls strongly from low rpm with little lag, and the 8-speed automatic shifts smoothly and quickly. Auto stop-start restarts abruptly.
The 2.0L four is quiet at cruise but sounds grainy and uninspiring near redline. The 440i's inline-six is far more pleasant.
The turning circle is mid-pack for a rear-drive coupe on a 110.6-in wheelbase.
The low, adjustable driving position comes with standard power sport seats, a telescoping wheel, a driver-angled center stack and a logical iDrive controller. Ingress over the wide sills and rear visibility are the compromises.
Rear-drive balance, an available 6-speed manual and a punchy turbo four make it genuinely enjoyable. Enthusiasts favor the 440i or M4 for character.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the 4 Series's strongest categories.2.43C+
Standard kit covered leatherette, power front seats, a 6.5-inch iDrive screen, Bluetooth, USB, HD Radio and BMW Assist. A rearview camera, parking sensors and keyless ignition (made standard for 2018), navigation, heated seats and driver aids all cost extra on the base 430i.
Fair value rather than a bargain. The new 248-hp 430i at about $42,150 undercut the 2018 by roughly $2,000 and matched Audi A5/Mercedes C-Class coupe pricing, but options quickly push a typical car near $50,000; the 320-hp 440i is the better performance-per-dollar buy.
Broad for a two-door nameplate: 430i and 440i each with RWD or xDrive AWD, a 6-speed manual on several versions, across coupe, convertible and Gran Coupe bodies, with the separately badged M4 above.
US sales were 39,634 across all three body styles in 2017, among the best-selling luxury coupe-styled nameplates, though already slipping from the 2015–2016 peak as buyers shifted to SUVs.
BMW was an aspirational, enthusiast-oriented luxury brand with the M4 as a halo, though Mercedes-Benz held the US luxury sales crown in 2017. The F32's conventional styling avoided the grille controversy of its successor.
In the pre-pandemic market with ample dealer stock, BMW backed the 4 Series with subvented lease money factors and loyalty/conquest cash, and dealers discounted readily, especially on 2017s once the LCI 2018 arrived.
The F32 platform dated from 2014, and 2017 was the last pre-LCI year — the refresh with new lights, suspension and iDrive 6.0 arrived for 2018, so 2017 buyers faced an imminent update. New B46/B58 engines (430i/440i) kept the powertrain current.
Well reviewed and ranked near the top of its class for driving dynamics, efficient powerful engines and an upscale cabin, with deductions for numb steering, intrusive stop-start and options-heavy pricing. Rarely the outright comparison-test winner.
