The verdict
A struggling luxury coupe, strong on reliability and held back by efficiency.
The 2020 4 Series is the final, most sorted year of the first-generation coupe. It is a handsome, balanced sport coupe with a mature powertrain, a strong dependability record and an unusually usable 15.7 cu ft trunk. It also carries clear end-of-run baggage: no official crash-test scores, an 8.8-inch iDrive 6 system a generation behind, premium-only fuel at about $3,400 a year, and a typical-spec price around $52,400. Buy one for how it drives and how well it has held up, not for its tech or running costs.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.86C-
The 2020 model year is the final year of the F32 generation (carry-over); the volume 430i xDrive uses the 2.0L TwinPower turbo four at 248 hp, with the 3.0L 440i and S55-powered M4 above it.
The 2.0L turbo four makes 258 lb-ft from 1,450 rpm, competitive for an entry luxury coupe but well short of the six-cylinder 440i.
Published figures for the 430i xDrive Coupe sit at 5.5–5.6 s; the conservative 5.6 s is used.
The turbo four pulls cleanly with little lag thanks to its low-rpm torque, but reviewers found it gruff and synthetic-sounding versus the silky B58 six in the 440i.
The ZF 8-speed automatic shifts quickly and smoothly with sensible logic; a 6-speed manual remained available on RWD 430i/440i coupes and the M4 offered a 7-speed DCT.
xDrive AWD was available on both 430i and 440i coupes (rear-biased, no torque-vectoring diff), though the M4 was RWD-only.
Three distinct gas engines (2.0L I4, 3.0L I6, M4 twin-turbo I6) with manual, automatic and DCT options, but no hybrid or electrified variant.
2Efficiency & RangeThe 4 Series's lowest-graded category.0.00F
EPA combined for the 2020 430i xDrive Coupe (8-speed auto); the RWD 430i automatic rates 27 MPG.
EPA city rating for the 2020 430i xDrive Coupe.
EPA highway rating for the 2020 430i xDrive Coupe.
Computed from the F32 coupe's 15.8-gallon tank and the EPA 24 MPG combined rating; EPA does not publish a range figure for gas vehicles.
EPA annual fuel cost at 15,000 mi/yr on premium gasoline for the 430i xDrive Coupe.
Every 2020 4 Series engine is rated by EPA on premium gasoline, and BMW specifies premium for the turbocharged engines.
3SafetyOne of the 4 Series's weakest categories.0.73F
NHTSA never crash-tested the F32/F33 4 Series; every 2020 4 Series variant in the NCAP database is listed as Not Rated.
IIHS never rated the F32 4 Series coupe, so there are no crash results and no award for 2020. The closely related F30 3 Series sedan scored Good in IIHS crash tests and won Top Safety Pick, but the two-door body is a different structure, so that result is only indirect evidence.
For 2020, BMW made Active Driving Assistant standard: frontal collision warning with low-speed City Collision Mitigation, pedestrian warning, lane departure warning and blind-spot detection. Full-speed adaptive cruise, lane-keep assist and rear cross-traffic alert still cost extra on the 430i.
Standard AEB is BMW's camera-based City Collision Mitigation, which works at low speed, with pedestrian warning. IIHS never ran front-crash-prevention tests on the 4 Series, and the system predates nighttime pedestrian testing.
Blind-spot detection is standard from 2020 as an alert. Rear cross-traffic alert and active side-collision avoidance are optional packages, and there is no safe-exit alert.
Only lane departure warning (a steering-wheel vibration) is standard. Active lane-keep and Steering & Lane Control Assistant need the Driving Assistance Professional Package, and that late-F32 system was workable but less polished than the later G22's.
Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Traffic Jam Assistant are available, and the radar ACC is generally well regarded. It is optional rather than standard on the volume 430i.
There is no hands-free option. Traffic Jam Assistant requires hands on the wheel. BMW's hands-free Extended Traffic Jam Assistant came only with the G20/G22-era cars and was never offered on the F32.
LED headlights are standard and adaptive LED with auto high beams is available, but IIHS never rated the 4 Series headlights. BMW lamps of this era (F30 3 Series, 2 Series) mostly earned Acceptable to Poor ratings, depending on the option.
Forward sightlines are good, but the coupe roofline, thick C-pillars and small rear glass leave rear-quarter blind zones. Front and rear parking sensors are standard and the surround-view camera is optional, which offsets some of that.
There are LATCH anchors in both outboard rear seats of the 4-seat coupe, but you reach them through two doors past a folded front seat. Rear legroom and headroom are tight, so fitting and loading a rear-facing seat is awkward.
4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.91C-
2020 is the final model year of the F32 4 Series Coupe, a strict four-seater with two individual rear buckets on every trim (430i, 440i, M4).
Generous front headroom for a low two-door coupe, noticeably more than the 38.0 in of the G22 successor.
There is ample front legroom, and the power sport seats have a long travel range.
Rear headroom is good for a coupe. The F32 roofline is less steeply raked than many rivals', so average adults sit upright.
This is usable rear legroom for a two-door, but getting in past the front seats is awkward, which limits rear-seat use in practice.
The trunk is large for a two-door luxury coupe, and the split-folding rear seatback takes long items.
Everyday storage is adequate: two cupholders, a small armrest bin, a glovebox and slim door pockets. The rear has no center storage because of the fixed console, and wireless charging is optional.
The standard power sport seats are supportive over long drives and offer optional adjustable bolsters. The rear buckets are shaped well, but the cushions are low.
On the standard suspension the ride is compliant but controlled, and optional adaptive M dampers broaden its range. Run-flat tires and larger M Sport wheels transmit some sharpness over broken pavement.
Wind noise is well suppressed, but run-flat tires produce noticeable road roar, and the four-cylinder sounds gruff when revved.
Automatic climate control and power seats are standard. Heated seats, the heated steering wheel and comfort access are extra-cost package items, and there is no rear climate zone.
5Cost of OwnershipGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.97F
The entry 2020 430i rear-drive Coupe was $44,950 plus BMW's $995 destination charge. 2020 is the final US model year of the first-generation F32 coupe, so it carries over from 2019 with a small price increase.
The volume configuration is the 430i xDrive Coupe ($46,950 + $995 = $47,945). It is almost always ordered with the Premium/Convenience packages and metallic paint, which add about $4,000–5,000.
BMW Ultimate Care covers scheduled service for the first 3 years/36,000 miles, so the owner pays nothing for routine service early on. Years four and five carry the usual repair exposure of a turbocharged BMW once the 4-year/50,000-mile warranty ends. This is the same blended estimate as the mechanically identical 2019 car.
This is roughly average for a German luxury coupe. Two things weigh on the final-year F32: it was immediately superseded by the redesigned G22, and many were leased.
BMW's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years or 50,000 miles. That is a year longer than mainstream 3-year/36,000-mile coverage and typical of German luxury brands.
BMW's powertrain coverage is part of the same 4-year/50,000-mile factory warranty, with no longer powertrain term. That is short next to the 5-year/60,000-mile to 10-year/100,000-mile coverage common elsewhere.
BMW Ultimate Care includes 3 years/36,000 miles of scheduled maintenance: oil, filters, brake fluid, spark plugs and more. It also includes 4 years of unlimited-mile roadside assistance and BMW ConnectedDrive services, and Apple CarPlay compatibility is included rather than sold as a subscription.
$52,400 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (51% retained, or about $26,724) leaves about $25,676 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,400 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $32,076 in total.
6Reliability & QualityThe 4 Series's best-graded category.3.20B+
2020 is the seventh and final US model year of the F32 first generation (2014–2020; the G22 arrived as a 2021 model), so the design was fully mature. J.D. Power rates its quality and reliability 'Great' and lists it as a Dependability Award winner. Consumer Reports' record for the F32 is average to above average, which holds it at the bottom of the top band rather than higher.
Around the 2020 model year BMW sat in the middle of the industry dependability tables, ahead of most European luxury rivals but well behind Lexus and Porsche, and its J.D. Power VDS and Consumer Reports placings moved up and down from year to year. That is mid-pack, not consistently top-5.
The NHTSA feed lists only one campaign covering the 2020 4 Series: a small knee-airbag assembly recall of about 5,000 units across several BMW models. Nothing affects the powertrain, and there are no fire or park-outside campaigns. The B48 starter-relay fire recall (25V636) that hits the 2019–2021 330i lists the 4 Series only from 2021. That is a clean record for a final-year car.
The volume 430i uses the B46/B48 2.0L turbo four (in the 4 Series since 2017, replacing the timing-chain-prone N20) with the ZF 8HP automatic. The 440i's B58 3.0L turbo six is widely regarded as one of BMW's most durable modern engines. Both are mature, with no systemic failures, though the usual BMW leak items (valve cover and oil-filter-housing gaskets, coolant expansion tank) keep the score from rising further.
By its final year the F32 cabin was well built, but its design was about seven years old and visibly simpler than the Mercedes C-Class coupe and Audi A5. Reviewers praised the solid switchgear and comfortable seats but noted plain materials and some hard plastics. Competitive, not class-leading.
End-of-run F32 production was mature, with tight panel gaps and solid assembly. J.D. Power's 85/100 Quality & Reliability score reflects few owner-reported defects, and owner complaints centre on iDrive software and phone connectivity rather than rattles or misalignment.
BMW has about 340 US retailers with dense metro and suburban coverage but thinner rural reach, and its service satisfaction ranks at or above the premium-brand average. 2020 models came with BMW Ultimate Care (3 years/36,000 miles of scheduled maintenance at no cost).
Parts are abundant because the F32 shares most of its hardware with the high-volume F30 3 Series, and a large specialist aftermarket (FCP Euro, ECS Tuning, Turner) supports it. Out-of-warranty repair and maintenance costs are still well above mainstream norms.
7Technology & InfotainmentGrades below the middle of the scale.1.58D
Every 2020 F32 4 Series has the 8.8-inch iDrive 6 touchscreen with navigation. No larger screen was offered before the G22 switched to a 10.25-inch display.
iDrive 6 is quick and logically laid out, and the rotary controller, touchscreen and shortcut buttons all work well together. It is a generation behind iDrive 7 in graphics and features.
Apple CarPlay is wireless, but at launch it carried a subscription after the first year, and Android Auto was never offered on the iDrive 6 F32.
Native navigation is standard and capable, but voice control is command-based. It lacks the natural-language Intelligent Personal Assistant found in iDrive 7 cars.
The base system is adequate, and the optional 16-speaker Harman Kardon surround system is a worthwhile upgrade.
The cluster uses analog dials with a center info display. A black-panel TFT multifunction cluster was available only in packages, with no configurability close to Live Cockpit Professional.
iDrive 6 cars get map updates over the air through ConnectedDrive but no whole-vehicle software OTA, which BMW introduced with Operating System 7.
The BMW Connected app covers remote lock/unlock, vehicle locate, climate/ventilation and trip sending. There is no digital key, and some functions are tied to ConnectedDrive subscriptions.
The car has USB-A ports up front and a 12V socket, but no USB-C and few rear provisions. Wireless charging was a package option.
Push-button start is standard, but Comfort Access keyless entry sits in the Premium Package. There is no phone-as-key and no factory remote engine start on the F32.
A rear-view camera and parking sensors are fitted, and Surround View plus Parking Assistant (automated parallel parking) are optional. Camera resolution is dated.
A full-color head-up display is optional through packages, but it is small by later standards and not standard on volume trims.
8Use-Case FitOne of the 4 Series's weakest categories.0.75F
With two doors and front seats that must slide forward, installing a car seat or loading a child is a chore. Rear LATCH anchors and a decent trunk help a little.
For 2020 BMW made Active Driving Assistant standard: forward collision warning, pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking and lane departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise remain optional, and the coupe was never fully crash-tested by IIHS or NHTSA.
Front occupants and a 15.7 cu ft trunk suit a couple's road trip. The rear has few amenities and awkward access, so it suits medium trips for two adults and two kids at most.
The torquey turbo four and smooth ZF 8-speed make traffic easy, and the ride is compliant. Stop/start is somewhat abrupt, and the low seating requires a stoop to get in.
It returns about 24 mpg combined on required premium fuel, and BMW maintenance and run-flat tires are costly after the complimentary maintenance period ends.
The compact footprint (182.7 in long) helps, but long doors in tight spaces, a wide 38.7 ft xDrive turning circle and thick rear pillars complicate parking. Surround View is optional.
There is no US tow rating, and the small trunk opening and coupe body make it unsuitable for work duty.
It is a luxury sport coupe with a premium interior and complex turbo powertrains, with no fleet or hard-use pedigree.
It has no onboard power outlets beyond 12V, no hitch, and no upfit ecosystem.
Highway stability, supportive seats and roughly 31 mpg highway from a 15.8-gal tank give good range. Run-flat road noise and optional-only adaptive cruise limit its fatigue reduction.
Available xDrive AWD handles snow and gravel roads, but low ground clearance and summer/run-flat tires keep it on pavement. It offers only accessory roof-rack mounts.
The roomy 15.7 cu ft trunk and 40/20/40 folding rear seats are good for a coupe, but the trunk opening is small and there are no roof rails or factory hitch.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the 4 Series's strongest categories.2.68C+
The 430i is balanced and composed through corners, with good body control from a near 50:50 weight distribution. It is grippy and stable, though the xDrive car feels slightly less agile than the RWD.
The electric power steering is quick and precise but filtered, and it has long been criticized as less communicative than older BMW hydraulic racks.
The brakes are strong and progressive, with good fade resistance in normal driving. M Sport brakes are optional for harder use.
The B46/B48 turbo four has strong low-end torque and little lag, and the ZF 8-speed shifts smoothly. Engine stop/start restarts are noticeable.
The four-cylinder is inoffensive at cruise but sounds coarse and uninspired near redline, especially next to the silky 440i six.
The xDrive volume trim turns notably wider than the rear-drive coupe, so tight U-turns take more space than average.
The low, sporty seating has a wide adjustment range and a driver-oriented center stack. Long doors and the low roof make getting in and out awkward, and rear visibility is limited.
It is an engaging, well-balanced coupe and still available with a manual on RWD trims. The 430i's four-cylinder lacks the character of the 440i, which keeps it short of enthusiast-favorite status.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the 4 Series's strongest categories.1.98C-
The 2020 430i Coupe came with leatherette sport seats, a moonroof, LED headlights, navigation with an 8.8-inch iDrive screen, and Apple CarPlay. Heated seats, Comfort Access, blind-spot monitoring and most driver aids were package-only, and the F32 lacked the digital cluster and active safety suite of newer rivals.
This is fair value rather than a bargain. The 248-hp 430i at $45,945 is priced against the Audi A5 and Mercedes C 300 coupe, and packages quickly push it past $52,000. The 320-hp 440i is the stronger performance-per-dollar choice, and final-year incentives improved real transaction value.
This is a wide, well-spaced range. The coupe came as 430i and 440i, each in RWD or xDrive, plus the M4 and M4 Competition; the convertible and Gran Coupe body styles were also offered. Package flexibility was deep, and the M Sport and Track Handling packages were available.
US 4 Series sales fell sharply to 9,495 in 2020. That was a run-out year for the F32, made worse by the pandemic and the changeover to the G22, in a two-door segment that was already shrinking.
BMW was the top-selling US luxury brand in 2020 and has an aspirational, enthusiast-anchored image. The F32's conventional grille avoided the styling backlash that hit its G22 successor.
As an outgoing generation in 2020, the F32 was clearance stock. BMW Financial ran pandemic-era 0%–0.9% APR offers, deferred payments and lease cash, so meaningful discounts were common before the redesign arrived.
2020 is the final US model year of the first-generation F32, which launched for 2014 and had a modest 2018 LCI refresh. The all-new G22 replaced it for 2021, so a 2020 buyer got a car about to be superseded.
Late in its life, the F32 was still well regarded for its balanced chassis, smooth powertrains and handsome looks. Reviewers noted dated interior tech, numb steering and newer rivals, and it was rarely the pick of the class.
