The verdict
A struggling luxury coupe, strong on driving and held back by safety.
The 2019 4 Series is a polished, genuinely fun rear-drive luxury coupe: one of the best 8-speed automatics anywhere (a 6-speed manual is still available), sharp handling, a usable 15.7 cu ft trunk, and better-than-average dependability for a late-generation BMW. Where it falls short is safety. Neither NHTSA nor IIHS ever crash-tested it, and automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring and lane assistance were all extra-cost options. Add premium fuel at about $3,050 a year and a design that was already six years old, and it suits a driver who prioritizes the drive over the latest tech or safety credentials.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.89C-
The volume 2019 430i Coupe (F32, carry-over year in the first generation's final stretch) uses BMW's 2.0L turbo four at 248 hp; the 440i steps up to a 3.0L turbo inline-six at 320 hp. The 2022 G22 430i gained 7 hp.
The 430i's 2.0L turbo four makes 258 lb-ft from low rpm; the 440i's inline-six raises it to 330 lb-ft.
Published figures for the 2019 430i Coupe range from a ~5.6 s estimate (RWD automatic) to Edmunds' 6.2 s instrumented run; 5.8 s is the midpoint of those sources. The 440i runs high-4s.
The 430i's 2.0L turbo four delivers strong low-end torque with little lag, but reviewers find its sound grainy and less polished than the 440i's silky inline-six. The auto stop-start can also be abrupt. It ranks a little below the later G22's B48 powertrain.
The ZF-sourced 8-speed Steptronic automatic shifts quickly and smoothly and picks gears well. A 6-speed manual was still offered on the RWD 430i and 440i, a rarity in the luxury coupe class.
xDrive AWD is an option on both the 430i and the 440i Coupe, so it is widely available. It is a conventional rear-biased system with no torque vectoring or terrain modes, and xDrive cars are automatic-only.
There are two gas engines (2.0L turbo four and 3.0L turbo six), plus the separately badged M4 with its twin-turbo S55 six. Each comes with a manual or automatic and with RWD or AWD, but there is no hybrid, PHEV or EV, and no mild-hybrid assist yet.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the 4 Series's weakest categories.0.07F
This is the EPA combined rating for the volume 2019 430i Coupe with the 8-speed automatic (the xDrive version matches it at 27). The 6-speed manual and the 440i drop to 25.
This is the EPA city rating for the 2019 430i Coupe with the automatic. xDrive costs 1 MPG, and the manual and the 440i fall to 21.
This is the EPA highway rating for the 2019 430i Coupe with the automatic, which is strong for a luxury coupe thanks to the tall 8th gear.
Computed from the F32 Coupe's 15.8-gallon tank and the EPA combined 27 MPG. Range on mostly highway driving stretches to about 535 mi at 34 MPG.
This is EPA's current published annual fuel cost for the 2019 430i Coupe at 15,000 mi/yr on premium gasoline. The manual and the 440i cost $3,300.
Every 2019 4 Series Coupe (430i and 440i, RWD or xDrive) requires premium unleaded. There is no regular-fuel or electrified alternative.
3SafetyThe 4 Series's lowest-graded category.0.00F
NHTSA never crash-tested the 2019 F32 4 Series Coupe. Overall, frontal, side and rollover ratings are all listed as Not Rated for both drivetrains, so per the framework it scores 0.
IIHS never tested the F32 4 Series Coupe, so it has no award and no crashworthiness ratings. Its F30 3 Series sedan platform-mate did well at IIHS, but that doesn't transfer to the coupe body. The only crash data for this body is Euro NCAP's 5-star result.
On the 2019 430i the only standard driver aids are a rearview camera and stability control. Forward-collision warning and low-speed City Collision Mitigation braking come in the $500 Driving Assistance Package. Blind-spot detection is in the $1,100 Convenience Package, and adaptive cruise costs extra.
AEB is optional only. It is the low-speed City Collision Mitigation in the Driving Assistance Package, with a pedestrian warning but no full-speed or night pedestrian capability. IIHS never rated it for this coupe.
Active Blind Spot Detection is available on every trim, but only through the $1,100 Convenience Package. Cross-traffic monitoring needs the side cameras in the Executive Package, and there is no safe-exit alert.
The F32 offers only optional lane departure warning, which vibrates the steering wheel. Steering-assisted lane keeping and centering didn't come to the 4 Series until the 2021 G22 generation.
Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go is a roughly $1,200 option and works across the full speed range. With no lane-centering to pair it with, though, there is no highway-assist function.
No hands-free or even hands-on lane-centering system was offered on the 2019 4 Series.
IIHS never rated these headlights. The 2018 LCI refresh made LED headlights standard, but adaptive full-LED lights and automatic high beams are part of the $2,550 Executive Package.
Forward sightlines are good for a coupe thanks to a low cowl and slim A-pillars, but the wide C-pillars and fastback roof limit the view over the shoulder. A rear camera is standard, while surround view needs the Executive Package.
The coupe has two rear seats, each with LATCH anchors, but reaching them means climbing past the front seats through long doors. Rear quarters are tight, so a rear-facing seat is a struggle, and there is no middle position.
4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.98C-
The F32 4 Series Coupe is a strict four-seater with two individual rear buckets, which puts it at the bottom of the coupe seating band.
There is generous front headroom for a low-slung coupe, near the top of the segment band.
Front legroom is mid-pack for the class and comfortable for tall drivers.
Rear headroom is decent for a fastback coupe, though taller adults will brush the sloping roofline.
Thanks to its 3 Series-derived 110.6-in wheelbase, the 4 Series has more rear legroom than most coupes and seats adults for short-to-medium trips. Getting in still means climbing past a tilted front seat.
The trunk is large for a two-door, matching many compact sedans, and the rear seatbacks fold for longer items.
Everyday storage is competitive: door pockets, a modest center-console bin, cupholders ahead of the shifter and a usable glovebox. There are no novel storage features, and the long coupe doors limit pocket usefulness.
The front seats are supportive and widely adjustable, and the optional sport seats with adjustable bolsters and thigh extensions are praised on long drives. The rear buckets are comfortable but upright and confining for adults.
The ride is firm but well damped. Standard run-flat tires and the M Sport suspension add harshness over sharp impacts, while the optional adaptive dampers soften it in Comfort mode.
Wind noise is well managed, but run-flat tires send noticeable road roar into the cabin on coarse pavement. The 430i's four-cylinder is audible when worked hard.
Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard. Heated front seats came only with the $1,100 Convenience Package and the heated wheel only in packages; ventilated seats and remote pre-conditioning were not offered on the F32 in the US.
5Cost of OwnershipGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.97F
The entry 2019 430i rear-drive Coupe (F32, a late carry-over year of the first generation) was listed at $44,800 plus BMW's $995 destination charge.
The volume configuration is the 430i xDrive Coupe ($46,800 + $995 = $47,795), almost always ordered with the Premium/Convenience packages and metallic paint, which adds about $4,000–5,000.
BMW Ultimate Care covers scheduled service for the first 3 years/36,000 miles, so new-owner maintenance is front-loaded to zero, but years four and five carry typical turbocharged-BMW repair exposure once the 4/50 warranty ends. Blended estimate for a new 2019 purchase, slightly above the G22 figure for an older platform.
Roughly average for a German luxury coupe; a 2019 bought new reached its fifth year in the 2024 used market, which was still somewhat elevated, but the outgoing F32 body and heavy lease returns weigh on values.
BMW's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs 4 years or 50,000 miles, a year longer than mainstream 3/36 coverage and typical of German luxury brands.
BMW's powertrain coverage is part of the same 4-year/50,000-mile factory warranty, with no extended powertrain term — short against the 5/60 to 10/100 coverage common elsewhere.
BMW Ultimate Care (introduced for MY2017) includes 3 years/36,000 miles of scheduled maintenance — oil, filters, brake fluid, spark plugs and more — plus 4 years of unlimited-mile roadside assistance; 2019 also added a complimentary first-year Apple CarPlay subscription and ConnectedDrive trial. Slightly narrower than the later Ultimate Care+ wear-item coverage.
$52,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (51% retained, or about $26,520) leaves about $25,480 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,400 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $31,880 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the 4 Series's strongest categories.3.04B
The 2019 4 Series is a late, mature year of the F32 generation (2014–2020), and the sources disagree. J.D. Power is strongly positive: the 4 Series was the top premium compact car for dependability in its 2022 VDS, which surveys 2019 models. Consumer Reports rates the 2019 4 Series less reliable than the average 2019 vehicle. The two sources disagree, so this lands in the upper part of the average band.
For the 2019 model year BMW was mid-pack, slightly better than average. It was 15th of all brands in J.D. Power's dependability study for 2019 models, just ahead of the industry average. In Consumer Reports' brand rankings of that period BMW sat in the upper half, below the Japanese leaders. It is not a consistent top-5 brand.
Only three NHTSA campaigns touch 2019 4 Series cars, and each affected a small, specific production batch rather than the fleet. None are do-not-drive or park-outside campaigns. The B48 starter-relay fire recall that hit the later G22 430i does not cover the 2019 F32.
The volume 430i uses the B48 2.0L turbo four, which replaced the troubled N20 (timing chain failures) in 2017, paired with the proven ZF 8HP automatic. The 440i uses the B58 3.0L turbo six, widely regarded as one of BMW's most durable modern engines. Both are known for oil and coolant leaks as they age (gaskets, coolant expansion tank), which keeps this below the top band.
The cabin has solid BMW switchgear, available Dakota leather and wood or aluminum trim, but by 2019 the F32 design was six years old. Reviewers called it plain next to the newer Audi A5 and Mercedes C-Class Coupe, and SensaTec vinyl was the standard upholstery.
In its sixth production year the F32's assembly was well sorted, and the model topped its J.D. Power dependability segment, which suggests few problems tied to how the car was built. Owner complaints are scattered (trim rattles, convertible roof noises) rather than systemic.
BMW has about 340 US dealers with dense coverage in metro areas but thinner coverage in rural areas, and its service satisfaction is above the luxury-brand average. 2019 models came with BMW Ultimate Care: 3 years/36,000 miles of free scheduled maintenance.
Parts are easy to find because the F32 shares its powertrains and most hardware with the high-volume F30 3 Series, and the BMW aftermarket is deep. Repair costs and unscheduled shop visits are well above mainstream norms once the car is out of warranty.
7Technology & InfotainmentGrades below the middle of the scale.1.45D
With navigation made standard for 2019, the 4 Series carries BMW's 8.8-in iDrive 6.0 touch display. That is small by later standards but typical for its era.
iDrive 6.0 was among the better systems of its day. The rotary controller, programmable shortcut buttons and touchscreen give flexible input, and responses are quick, though menus run deep.
Apple CarPlay was wireless-only and came pre-installed with a one-year trial, after which BMW charged a subscription. Android Auto was not offered at all.
Standard BMW Navigation with real-time traffic for 2019 is capable and clear. Voice control handles commands but is not natural-language.
The base system is adequate, and the optional 16-speaker Harman Kardon system is a solid upgrade. There was no top-tier Bowers & Wilkins option on the F32 coupe.
The 2019 update brought an improved instrument cluster with an enlarged color info display. It is still a hybrid layout with physical needles, not the full-digital Live Cockpit of the later G22.
Through ConnectedDrive, the car could take over-the-air map updates and real-time traffic data. Vehicle software updates still required a dealer visit, since BMW's Remote Software Upgrade came only with OS7 on newer platforms.
The BMW Connected app and Remote Services offer remote lock/unlock, horn and lights, vehicle finder and send-to-car destinations. There is no remote engine start or digital key.
The cabin offers USB-A ports and 12V sockets with no USB-C, and Qi wireless charging was available only in an option package. Rear passengers get little dedicated power.
Push-button start is standard. Comfort Access proximity entry and the hands-free trunk come in the Premium Package, and there is no factory remote start or phone-as-key.
For 2019 a rearview camera and front/rear Park Distance Control are standard. Surround View and automated Parking Assistant are optional.
A full-color head-up display was available in an option package on all 4 Series trims, but it was not standard on the volume 430i.
8Use-Case FitOne of the 4 Series's weakest categories.0.75F
With two doors, loading a child seat means tilting the front seat and reaching into a low rear bench. LATCH anchors are present in both rear seats, but daily family logistics are a chore.
The structure is solid and 2019 added standard parking sensors. Forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot and lane-departure assistance all remained in optional packages on the 430i.
The large 15.7 cu ft trunk and decent rear legroom help, but there are no rear climate vents of note, no rear USB, and a fixed four-seat layout with tight rear entry.
Low-end turbo torque, a smooth 8-speed and a comfortable driving position make traffic easy. A firm run-flat ride, abrupt stop-start and heavy coupe doors in tight spaces are minor annoyances.
A 27 MPG combined rating is reasonable for the class, but premium fuel and costly BMW maintenance after the 3-year/36,000-mile free-maintenance window push per-mile costs above average.
The 182.6-in length and 37.1-ft turning circle are manageable, and standard front/rear sensors plus a rear camera help. Long doors and a limited rear three-quarter view complicate tight parking.
The 4 Series has no US tow rating and modest payload; it is a two-door luxury coupe with no work role.
This is a luxury-oriented car with leatherette or leather upholstery, a low ride height and expensive repairs, and it is not suited to abuse.
There is no onboard power, no tie-down ecosystem, no hitch from the factory and no upfit support.
It is a capable highway tourer with supportive seats, stability and roughly 400+ miles of highway range from a 15.8-gal tank. Run-flat road noise, a firm ride and adaptive cruise only as an option limit endurance.
Available xDrive AWD makes it secure on snowy or gravel roads, but low ground clearance and no tow rating leave it pavement-oriented.
The 15.7 cu ft trunk swallows normal luggage, and the folding rear seatbacks allow long items. The trunk opening is narrow, and there are no roof rails or factory hitch.
9Driving ExperienceThe 4 Series's best-graded category.3.07B
The 4 Series has balanced rear-drive handling, a low center of gravity and tight body control, especially with the M Sport suspension or adaptive dampers. Reviewers rank it among the sharpest luxury coupes short of an M car, though it is less playful than the older E92.
The electric power steering is precise and well weighted but transmits little road feel, a common criticism of F-generation BMWs versus their hydraulic predecessors. Variable Sport Steering quickens it at the cost of some naturalness.
The brakes have a firm, progressive pedal and short stops, and the optional M Sport brakes add fade resistance. Instrumented 60–0 tests of the F32 coupe land around 110–115 ft.
The turbo four has little lag and the 8-speed automatic shifts smoothly and quickly. The automatic engine stop-start restarts abruptly, and the four-cylinder is less silky than the 440i's inline-six.
The 2.0L four is quiet at cruise but sounds grainy and uninspiring near redline, with some synthesized sound piped in. The optional inline-six is far more pleasant.
The turning circle is mid-pack for a rear-drive coupe on a 110.6-in wheelbase.
The low, adjustable driving position has a driver-angled center stack, a telescoping wheel and a logical iDrive controller with physical buttons. Ingress over the wide sills and rear visibility are the main compromises.
Rear-drive balance, an available 6-speed manual and a punchy turbo four make it genuinely enjoyable. Enthusiasts favor the 440i or M4 for character, and the four-cylinder soundtrack dulls the experience.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the 4 Series's strongest categories.2.33C+
2019 was a content year for the aging F32: BMW made navigation, real-time traffic, Apple CarPlay (one year free), a revised instrument cluster and front/rear Park Distance Control standard. Still, heated seats, keyless entry, blind-spot monitoring and most driver-assistance features remained in packages on the $44,800 base 430i.
Fair value rather than a bargain: the 248-hp 430i is priced in line with the Audi A5 and Mercedes C 300 coupe and adds standard navigation for 2019, but options quickly push a typical car past $52,000. The 320-hp 440i at $51,200 is the stronger performance-per-dollar case.
Broad for a two-door nameplate: 430i and 440i, each with RWD or xDrive AWD and (on RWD) a 6-speed manual, across coupe, convertible and Gran Coupe bodies, plus the separately badged M4 above — a well-spaced ladder from about $45,000 to well over $70,000.
Sales fell sharply in 2019 as the generation aged and buyers shifted to SUVs — 18,621 units across all three body styles, down about 40% from 2018's 31,379. Still a meaningful seller among luxury coupes, but on a clear downward trajectory.
BMW was the best-selling US luxury brand in 2019, with an aspirational, enthusiast-oriented image and the M4 as a halo. The F32's conventional styling lacked the polarizing grille of its successor, so there is no model-specific drag.
In the pre-pandemic market, with the F32 in its final years and sales down 40%, BMW backed the 4 Series with lease support, subvented money factors and loyalty/conquest cash, and dealers discounted readily on stocked cars.
The F32 launched for 2014 and had its only LCI refresh for 2018, so the 2019 was a sixth-year carry-over with added equipment. The all-new G22 arrived for 2021, so a 2019 buyer faced imminent replacement.
Well regarded but no longer a class leader by 2019 — praised for polish, powertrains and handling balance, with deductions for numb steering, a dated interior and options-heavy pricing. Comparison tests by then generally favored newer rivals such as the Audi A5.
