The verdict
A struggling luxury coupe, strong on reliability and held back by safety.
The 2018 BMW 4 Series is the mid-cycle refresh of the first-generation coupe. It drives the way a BMW should: balanced rear-drive handling, a 248-hp turbo four (or a 320-hp six in the 440i), a superb 8-speed automatic and a 6-speed manual still on the menu. It also fits more people and luggage than most two-doors, with 33.7 in of rear legroom and a 15.7 cu ft trunk, and it earned a J.D. Power quality award. The catches are real, though. Neither NHTSA nor IIHS ever crash-tested it, nearly every driver aid was an extra-cost option, it needs premium fuel ($3,050/yr), and the base car has a small 6.5-in screen with no Android Auto. On the used market, check the window sticker closely.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.88C-
2018 is the F32's mid-cycle refresh (LCI) year. The engines carried over: the volume 430i uses a 2.0L turbo four at 248 hp, and the 440i uses a 3.0L turbo inline-six at 320 hp.
The 430i's turbo four makes 258 lb-ft across a broad 1,450–4,800 rpm plateau; the 440i's inline-six raises that to 330 lb-ft.
BMW's estimate for the RWD automatic 430i Coupe is 5.6 s, while instrumented tests of this generation's 430i land near 6 s. 5.8 s is a fair representative figure. The 440i runs in the high 4s.
The 430i's turbo four pulls hard from low rpm with little lag, but its sound is grainy next to the silky 440i six, and the auto stop-start can be abrupt.
The ZF-sourced 8-speed Steptronic automatic shifts quickly and smoothly with good gear logic. A 6-speed manual was still offered on the RWD 430i and on the 440i (RWD and xDrive), which is rare in the class.
xDrive AWD is optional on both the 430i and 440i Coupe, so it is widely available. It is a conventional rear-biased system with no torque vectoring or terrain modes.
There are two gas engines (turbo four and turbo six), plus the separately badged M4. Each comes with a manual or automatic and with RWD or AWD, but there is no hybrid, PHEV or EV option.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the 4 Series's weakest categories.0.07F
This is the EPA combined rating for the volume 2018 430i Coupe with the 8-speed automatic; the xDrive version matches it.
This is the EPA city rating for the 2018 430i Coupe with the automatic.
This is the EPA highway rating for the 2018 430i Coupe with the automatic, which is strong for a luxury coupe thanks to the tall 8th gear.
Computed from the F32 Coupe's 15.8-gallon tank and the EPA combined 27 MPG.
This is EPA's current published annual fuel cost for the 2018 430i Coupe automatic at 15,000 mi/yr on premium fuel.
Every 2018 4 Series Coupe (430i and 440i, RWD or xDrive) is rated on premium unleaded. There is no regular-fuel or electrified alternative.
3SafetyThe 4 Series's lowest-graded category.0.00F
NHTSA never crash-tested the 2018 F32 4 Series Coupe. Its overall, frontal, side and rollover ratings are all listed as Not Rated for both drivetrains, so the framework scores it 0.
IIHS never tested the F32 4 Series Coupe, so it has no award and no crashworthiness ratings. Its F30 3 Series sedan platform-mate did well at IIHS, but that result doesn't transfer to the coupe body. The only crash data for this body is Euro NCAP's 5-star rating.
On the 2018 430i the only standard driver aids are a rearview camera and stability control. Forward-collision warning with low-speed City Collision Mitigation braking and lane departure warning ($500), blind-spot monitoring ($500) and adaptive cruise ($1,200) are all à la carte options.
AEB is optional only. It is the low-speed City Collision Mitigation system in Active Driving Assistant, which adds daytime pedestrian warning but has no full-speed or nighttime pedestrian capability. IIHS never rated it on this coupe.
Active Blind Spot Detection is a $500 option on every trim. Rear cross-traffic monitoring depends on optional camera and parking packages, and there is no safe-exit alert.
The F32 offers only an optional lane departure warning, which vibrates the steering wheel. Steering-assisted lane keeping and centering didn't reach the 4 Series until the 2021 G22 generation.
Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go is a $1,200 option and works across the full speed range. Without lane centering to pair it with, though, there is no highway-assist function.
The 2018 4 Series offered no hands-free driving system, and not even hands-on lane centering.
IIHS never rated these headlights. The 2018 LCI refresh made LED headlights standard, but adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams are part of the optional Executive Package.
Forward sightlines are good for a coupe thanks to the low cowl and slim A-pillars. The wide C-pillars and fastback roofline limit the over-the-shoulder view. A rear camera is standard, while side and top-view cameras are optional.
The coupe has two rear seats, each with LATCH anchors, but getting to them means climbing past the front seats through long doors. The rear quarters are tight, which makes a rear-facing seat a struggle, and there is no middle seating position.
4Space & ComfortMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.93C-
The 2018 F32 4 Series Coupe is a strict four-seater with two individual rear buckets, so it sits at the bottom of the coupe seating band.
Front headroom is generous for a low coupe, near the top of the segment band. The 2018 refresh did not change the body.
Front legroom is mid-pack for the class and comfortable for tall drivers.
Rear headroom is decent for a fastback coupe, though taller adults will brush the sloping roofline.
The 3 Series-derived 110.6-in wheelbase gives the coupe more rear legroom than most rivals, enough for adults on shorter trips. Getting in still means climbing past a tilted front seat.
The trunk is large for a two-door, matching many compact sedans, and the rear seatbacks fold for longer items.
Everyday storage is competitive: door pockets, a modest console bin, cupholders ahead of the shifter and a usable glovebox. There are no novel storage features, and the long coupe doors limit how useful the pockets are.
The standard 10-way power front seats are supportive. Lumbar support comes only with the Premium Package, and the optional sport seats add adjustable bolsters and thigh extensions. The rear buckets are comfortable but upright and confining for adults.
The 2018 refresh stiffened the suspension for sharper response, so the ride is firm but well damped. Run-flat tires and the M Sport suspension add harshness over sharp bumps, while the optional adaptive dampers soften it in Comfort mode.
Wind noise is well controlled, but run-flat tires send noticeable road roar into the cabin on coarse pavement. The 430i's four-cylinder is audible when worked hard.
Dual-zone automatic climate control is standard. Heated front seats came only in the $2,300 Premium Package and the heated wheel only as an extra-cost option. Ventilated seats and remote pre-conditioning were not offered on the US F32.
5Cost of OwnershipGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.99F
The entry 2018 430i rear-drive Coupe (the F32's LCI refresh year) was $43,300 plus BMW's $995 destination charge per Edmunds. BMW's February 2017 announcement listed it at $42,400, so the list price rose before or during the model year.
The volume configuration is the 430i xDrive Coupe at about $46,295 with destination ($2,000 over RWD). Most were ordered with the Premium and Convenience packages plus metallic paint, which adds roughly $4,000–5,000.
BMW Ultimate Care covered scheduled service for the first 3 years/36,000 miles, so early maintenance cost a new owner nothing. Years four and five carry typical turbocharged-BMW repair exposure once the 4/50 warranty ends. This is a blended estimate in line with the same-generation 2019.
This is about average for a German luxury coupe. A 2018 bought new reached year five in the inflated 2023 used market, but lease-return volume and the redesigned G22 successor weigh on F32 values.
BMW's New Vehicle Limited Warranty ran 4 years or 50,000 miles, a year longer than mainstream 3/36 coverage and typical of German luxury brands.
Powertrain coverage sat inside the same 4-year/50,000-mile factory warranty with no extended term. That is short against the 5/60 to 10/100 coverage common elsewhere.
BMW Ultimate Care (from MY2017) included 3 years/36,000 miles of scheduled maintenance plus 4 years of unlimited-mile roadside assistance and a BMW Assist/ConnectedDrive trial. This is meaningful coverage, but narrower than earlier BMW plans that covered wear items, and 2018 lacked the free Apple CarPlay year that 2019 added.
$51,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (51% retained, or about $26,010) leaves about $24,990 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $31,490 in total.
6Reliability & QualityThe 4 Series's best-graded category.3.08B
2018 is a mature mid-cycle year of the F32 generation (2014–2020), on the B46/B48 and B58 engines introduced for 2017. The sources disagree: J.D. Power rates it strongly and gave it a quality award, while Consumer Reports rates the 2018 4 Series less reliable than the average 2018 vehicle. The mixed signals put it in the upper part of the average band.
In this era BMW was a mid-pack brand: around the industry average in J.D. Power's VDS and in the middle of Consumer Reports' brand rankings. That is ahead of most European rivals but well behind Lexus and Toyota, and BMW was not consistently a top-5 brand.
Only one NHTSA campaign covers the 2018 4 Series: a seat-belt retractor fix on 67 convertibles. Nothing in it touches the 430i coupe volume trim, and there are no powertrain, fire, do-not-drive or park-outside campaigns. TSB activity centres on routine gasket and coolant-line leaks, not systemic faults.
The volume 430i uses the B46/B48 2.0L turbo four, which replaced the N20 (prone to timing-chain failures) for 2017, paired with the proven ZF 8HP automatic. The 440i's B58 inline-six is among BMW's most durable modern engines. Owners report oil leaks from plastic engine components and coolant-line failures as the cars age, which keeps this below the top band.
The 2018 interior update brought revised trim and a new iDrive 6 touchscreen interface, and the switchgear is solid. But the F32 cabin design was dated next to the new Audi A5 (2018) and the Mercedes C-Class Coupe, and SensaTec vinyl was the standard upholstery.
In its fifth production year F32 assembly was well sorted, and the 2018 4 Series won a J.D. Power quality award for its low count of early-ownership problems. Owner complaints such as trim rattles and convertible roof noises are scattered rather than systemic.
BMW had about 340 US retailers, dense in metro and suburban areas and thinner in rural ones, and its service satisfaction was at or above the premium-brand average. 2018 models came with BMW Ultimate Care: 3 years/36,000 miles of free scheduled maintenance.
Parts are easy to find because the F32 shares its powertrains and most hardware with the high-volume F30 3 Series, and the BMW aftermarket is deep. Out-of-warranty repair costs and the rate of unscheduled shop visits are well above mainstream norms.
7Technology & InfotainmentGrades below the middle of the scale.1.15D
The base 2018 430i has a 6.5-in center display worked through the iDrive controller. The 8.8-in iDrive 6.0 screen came only with navigation in the $2,300 Premium Package, and navigation did not become standard until 2019.
iDrive was among the better systems of its era. The rotary controller and programmable shortcut buttons respond quickly, and the 2018 refresh brought the iDrive 6.0 tile interface on navigation cars. Menus run deep, and the base 6.5-in screen is small.
Apple CarPlay was a wireless-only, extra-cost option on the 2018 car and was tied to navigation. Android Auto was not offered, so Android phones were limited to Bluetooth.
BMW Navigation with real-time traffic is capable and clear, but on the 2018 430i it was part of the optional Premium Package rather than standard. Voice control handles structured commands but is not natural-language.
The base system is adequate, and the optional 16-speaker Harman Kardon system is a solid upgrade. There was no top-tier Bowers & Wilkins option on the F32 coupe.
The base car has analog gauges with a small info display. The refresh's high-resolution cluster display came only with the Premium Package, and even that kept physical needles rather than a full-digital screen.
Navigation-equipped cars could receive over-the-air map updates and real-time traffic through ConnectedDrive. Vehicle software updates still needed a dealer visit, since BMW's Remote Software Upgrade arrived only with OS7 on G-platform models.
The BMW Connected app and Remote Services offer remote lock/unlock, horn and lights, vehicle finder and send-to-car destinations. There is no remote engine start or digital key.
The cabin has a USB-A port and 12V sockets with no USB-C. Qi wireless charging was available only as an option, and rear passengers get little dedicated power.
For 2018, Comfort Access proximity entry and push-button start come standard through the no-cost Essentials Package. There is no factory remote start or phone-as-key.
A rearview camera and front/rear Park Distance Control are standard for 2018. Side and top-view cameras and the automated Parking Assistant are in the optional Executive Package.
A full-color head-up display was available on all trims, but only in the Executive Package, which itself required the Premium Package. That means more than $4,000 in options on a 430i.
8Use-Case FitOne of the 4 Series's weakest categories.0.69F
With two doors, loading a child seat means tilting the front seat and reaching into a low rear bucket. Both rear seats have LATCH anchors, but daily family logistics are a chore.
The structure is solid (Euro NCAP 5 stars) and a rear camera and parking sensors are standard. NHTSA and IIHS never rated the coupe, and forward-collision warning, low-speed AEB, blind-spot monitoring and lane-departure warning were all à la carte options on the 430i.
The large 15.7 cu ft trunk and decent rear legroom help. There is little in the way of rear climate or USB power, and the fixed four-seat layout has tight rear entry.
Low-end turbo torque, a smooth 8-speed and a good driving position make traffic easy. The stiffer 2018 suspension on run-flats, abrupt stop-start and heavy coupe doors in tight spaces are minor annoyances.
A 27 MPG combined rating is reasonable for the class, but premium fuel and costly BMW maintenance after the 3-year/36,000-mile free-maintenance window push per-mile costs above average.
The 182.6-in length and 37.1-ft turning circle are manageable, and standard front/rear sensors plus a rear camera help. Long doors and a limited rear three-quarter view complicate tight parking.
BMW published no US tow rating for the coupe, and payload is modest. It is a two-door luxury coupe with no work role.
This is a luxury car with leatherette or leather upholstery, low ride height and expensive repairs, and it is not built for abuse.
There is no onboard power, no tie-down ecosystem, no factory hitch and no upfit support.
It is a capable highway tourer with supportive seats, high-speed stability and about 425 miles of range from a 15.8-gal tank. Run-flat road noise, a firm ride and adaptive cruise only as a $1,200 option limit endurance.
Available xDrive AWD makes it secure on snowy or gravel roads, but low ground clearance and no tow rating keep it on pavement.
The 15.7 cu ft trunk swallows normal luggage, and folding rear seatbacks take long items. The trunk opening is narrow, and there are no roof rails or factory hitch.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the 4 Series's strongest categories.3.07B
The 2018 refresh stiffened the suspension and sharpened response, giving balanced rear-drive handling, a low center of gravity and tight body control. Reviewers rank it among the sharpest luxury coupes short of an M car.
The electric power steering, retuned for 2018, is precise and well weighted but transmits little road feel, a common criticism of F-generation BMWs. Variable Sport Steering quickens it at some cost to naturalness.
The brakes have a firm, progressive pedal and short stops, and the optional M Sport brakes add fade resistance. Instrumented 60–0 mph tests of the F32 coupe land around 110–115 ft.
The 248-hp turbo four has little lag, and the ZF 8-speed automatic shifts smoothly and quickly. Auto stop-start restarts abruptly, and the four-cylinder is less silky than the 440i's inline-six.
The 2.0L four is quiet at cruise but sounds grainy near redline, with some synthesized sound piped in. The optional inline-six is far more pleasant.
The turning circle is mid-pack for a rear-drive coupe on a 110.6-in wheelbase. xDrive versions turn wider.
The low, widely adjustable driving position has a driver-angled center stack, a telescoping wheel (new rim for 2018) and a logical iDrive controller with physical buttons. Ingress over the wide sills and rear visibility are the main compromises.
Rear-drive balance, a tauter post-refresh chassis, an available 6-speed manual and a punchy turbo four make it genuinely enjoyable. The four-cylinder soundtrack dulls it next to the 440i or M4.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the 4 Series's strongest categories.2.49C+
The 2018 refresh made keyless entry and ignition, a rearview camera, satellite radio and front/rear parking sensors standard, alongside LED headlights, a moonroof and 10-way power seats. Navigation (standard from 2019), heated seats, blind-spot monitoring and most driver aids still cost extra on the base 430i.
This is fair value rather than a bargain. The 248-hp 430i is priced in line with the Audi A5 and Mercedes C 300 coupe, but options quickly push a typical car past $50,000. The 320-hp 440i at $48,700 base is the better performance-per-dollar buy.
The range is broad for a two-door nameplate. The 430i and 440i each come with RWD or xDrive AWD, plus a 6-speed manual on several versions, across coupe, convertible and Gran Coupe bodies. The separately badged M4 sits above, for a well-spaced ladder from about $44,000 to over $60,000.
US sales were 31,379 across all three body styles in 2018, down about 21% from 2017's 39,634 as buyers shifted to SUVs. It was still one of the best-selling luxury two-door/coupe-styled nameplates, but on a declining trajectory.
BMW was an aspirational, enthusiast-oriented luxury brand with the M4 as a halo, though Mercedes-Benz edged it for the US luxury sales crown in 2018. The F32's conventional styling avoided the grille controversy of its successor.
In the pre-pandemic market, with sales sliding and ample dealer stock, BMW backed the 4 Series with subvented lease money factors and loyalty/conquest cash, and dealers discounted readily.
2018 was the F32's only mid-cycle refresh (LCI), with new LED lights, a stiffer suspension, iDrive 6.0 and a revised gauge cluster. The platform dated from 2014, and the all-new G22 arrived for 2021, so this was mid-cycle rather than current-generation fresh.
It was well reviewed and ranked near the top of its class, praised for its powertrains, handling balance and the refresh's tauter suspension, with deductions for numb steering and options-heavy pricing. It was rarely the outright comparison-test winner.
