The verdict

A capable luxury coupe, strong on technology and held back by ownership.

The 2026 BMW 4 Series is a genuinely good grand-touring coupe wrapped around a genuinely expensive ownership proposition. It handles, rides and cruises like a car costing more — near-50/50 balance, an adaptive suspension that stays supple in Comfort, a 14.9-inch curved touchscreen that's among the biggest in the class, and BMW's famously proven B48 and B58 engines behind the class-best ZF 8-speed. But a typically-optioned 430i xDrive runs about $58,975, holds roughly 46% of that after five years, requires premium fuel to return 30 MPG combined, and carries only a 4-year/50,000-mile warranty with no separate powertrain coverage. Buy it because you want to drive it; don't buy it expecting it to be cheap.

Jump to scores

Strengths

  • Drives the way a BMW coupe is supposed to
  • Big-screen tech that's standard, not an upsell
  • Engines with a real durability reputation

What holds it back

  • Five-year ownership cost is brutal
  • Warranty coverage stops at four years, full stop
  • Premium fuel only, and the pump bill shows it

#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

430i peaks at 295 lb-ft; M440i xDrive at 369 lb-ft, M4 (manual) at 406 lb-ft, and the M4 Competition / CS variants at 479 lb-ft.

0–60 mph time
5.6 s (430i xDrive); ~5.7 s (430i RWD), ~4.3 s (M440i xDrive), ~4.1 s (M4 manual), ~3.4 s (M4 Comp xDrive), ~3.2 s (M4 CS)
60/100
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

BMW quotes 5.6 s for the volume 430i xDrive Coupe (5.7 s RWD); M440i xDrive runs to 60 in about 4.3 s, the M4 manual around 4.1 s, and the M4 Competition xDrive as quick as 3.4 s.

Powertrain refinement82
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

The B48 2.0T in the 430i is smooth and linear with the 48V mild-hybrid smoothing stop-start and low-rpm response; the B58 inline-six in M440i is a benchmark for refinement, and the S58 in the M4 delivers ferocious, well-metered power with only mild turbo character.

Transmission behavior88
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

All 4 Series variants use the ZF 8-speed Sport Automatic, widely regarded as the best conventional automatic on sale — crisp, quick, decisive shifts with well-tuned Sport logic; the M4 additionally offers a proper 6-speed manual for enthusiasts.

AWD/4WD availability72
#3 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

xDrive AWD is optional on the 430i, standard on the M440i, and available on the M4 Competition — with a rear-biased tune and 2WD mode — though the base M4 manual remains RWD-only; system is a competent on-road setup without low range or terrain modes.

Powertrain lineup breadth58
#3 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Coupe is gas-only with no hybrid, PHEV, or EV variant (the electrified i4 is a separate model), but offers three distinct engines across five M4 tunes (255 hp 2.0T I4 with mild hybrid, 382 hp 3.0T I6 with mild hybrid, and 473–543 hp twin-turbo I6) covering entry luxury through halo track-day performance.

NHTSA overall rating
4.5 stars (estimated — NHTSA has not published a full battery for the 4 Series Coupe; based on shared-platform 3 Series which earned 5 stars overall)
75/100
#3 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

NHTSA does not publish comprehensive testing for the 4 Series Coupe body style; estimate is derived from the shared CLAR platform with the 3 Series sedan which earned 5-star NHTSA overall in prior generations.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness74
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Prior-generation 4 Series earned Good on legacy IIHS crashworthiness tests, but the current G22 has not achieved 2024/2025 Top Safety Pick under IIHS's updated side-impact and pedestrian-AEB protocols — typical results are Good on moderate overlap front, Acceptable on updated side.

Standard ADAS suite breadth73
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

BMW Active Driving Assistant is standard on all 4 Series trims (forward collision warning with city collision mitigation/AEB, blind-spot detection, lane departure warning, rear cross-traffic alert, park distance control). Full-speed adaptive cruise with stop-and-go and lane centering remain a paid option (Driving Assistance Professional) — behind Lexus RC's standard LSS+ and Mercedes CLE's more inclusive standard suite.

Automatic emergency braking performance78
#3 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

BMW's front collision prevention has earned Superior daytime and Advanced/Superior nighttime pedestrian ratings on the shared-platform 3 Series; the 4 Series uses the same camera + radar sensor suite, though not separately IIHS-rated for pedestrian AEB in the current year.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage82
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert are standard across the 4 Series lineup as part of Active Driving Assistant; intervention is alert-only, without active steering correction on the volume 430i trim.

Lane keeping & centering78
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Lane departure warning is standard; active lane keeping and lane centering come with the Driving Assistance Professional Package. When equipped, BMW's centering is well-regarded — smooth tracking with minimal ping-pong per reviewer testing.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist84
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Optional Driving Assistance Professional adds full-speed-range adaptive cruise with stop-and-go and an integrated highway assist; BMW's calibration (smooth braking, quick resume, natural gap keeping) is among the best in class. Points off because the full system is not standard.

Hands-free driving availability77
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

BMW Highway Assistant enables hands-free driving up to 85 mph on divided US highways with driver eye monitoring, as part of the Driving Assistance Professional Package. Mapped-road coverage is narrower than GM Super Cruise's ~750k-mile network but the system is mature and available.

Headlight performance70
#3 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Standard LED headlights with automatic high beam; adaptive LED optional on upper trims. IIHS testing on the current 4 Series has generally shown Acceptable rather than Good on volume-trim headlights; adaptive units improve results but are trim-locked.

Outward visibility62
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Classic coupe compromise — thick B/C-pillars, low roofline, high beltline and a small rear window restrict natural sightlines. Standard reversing camera and available 360-degree Parking Assistant Plus help but reviewers consistently flag rear visibility as a weak point.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability55
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Two-door 2+2 configuration forces child-seat installation through a single narrow doorway after tumbling the front seat; LATCH anchors are recessed under upholstery and rear-seat width is limited. Not a practical family carrier.

Sloping fastback roofline pinches rear headroom near the low end of the coupe band; unchanged for 2026.

Rear legroom
34.5 in
83/100
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Rear legroom is tight for adults, better suited to kids or short-trip use; carries over unchanged for 2026.

Cargo/trunk volume
12.0 cu ft
36/100
#5 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

BMW-published trunk volume for the 4 Series Coupe; the Gran Coupe hatchback body has more (16.6 cu ft) but that is a separate model.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions62
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Center console bin, door pockets, cupholders, and a modest glovebox — competent but nothing standout. Rear bench splits 40/20/40 with pass-through for skis/long items, a useful coupe feature but expected in the segment.

Seat comfort82
#3 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Front sport seats are firm but well-bolstered with multiple power adjustments including thigh extension and adjustable side bolster angle; broadly praised for long-haul comfort. Rear seats are tight (see legroom item) but shaped well for the two they carry.

Ride quality82
#3 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Standard adaptive suspension (standard on M440i, available on 430i) delivers a supple ride in Comfort mode without giving up body control in Sport. Repeatedly praised as absorbent for a sport coupe.

Cabin quietness78
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Well-insulated cabin at highway speed with acoustic glass on upper trims; described as hushed in Comfort mode. Some tire/road noise creeps in on the M Sport wheel/tire package, keeping it from library-quiet territory.

Climate & comfort features85
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Dual-zone automatic climate, heated front seats, and heated steering wheel are standard or widely available; ventilated seats optional on M440i. Comfort access, remote pre-conditioning via BMW app, and rear vents round out the amenities.

5Cost of OwnershipThe 4 Series's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Base MSRP
$51,675 (430i Coupe RWD, incl. $995 destination)
10/100
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Base trim is the 430i Coupe (RWD) with the B48 2.0T. 2026 MSRP reflects a small model-year bump over the 2025 base of $49,895 + $995 destination.

Volume-Trim Price
~$58,975 (430i xDrive with Premium Package + M Sport wheels/pkg)
0/100
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

The volume build is the 430i xDrive (~$53,890 with destination) fitted with the Premium Package (heated seats, keyless entry, moonroof, wireless CarPlay/Android Auto) and M Sport wheels or Convenience Package — the two most-selected option groups per BMW configurator data.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$9,200 over 5 years
0/100
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

BMW dealer labor rates, premium parts (run-flat tires, iridium plugs, adaptive dampers where fitted) and turbocharged inline-6/turbo-4 servicing push 5-year maintenance and out-of-warranty repair to the top of the coupe segment band. The 3-yr/36k Ultimate Care mitigates early scheduled maintenance but years 4-5 (brakes, tires, potential VANOS/thermostat/gasket labor) carry the total higher than a 2 Series.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~46% of MSRP retained after 5 years
37/100
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

BMW mid-size luxury coupes depreciate faster than Japanese luxury peers because heavily-optioned MSRPs don't hold up on the used market and the coupe body style has softer resale than the 3 Series sedan sibling. M440i variants retain 3–5 points better than 430i.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
50/100
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

BMW's New Vehicle Limited Warranty is 4 years or 50,000 miles, whichever comes first. Standard among German luxury.

Powertrain warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi (covered under New Vehicle Limited Warranty)
0/100
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

BMW does not publish a separate extended powertrain warranty; the powertrain is covered under the same 4-yr/50k New Vehicle Limited Warranty. Well below segment leaders (Hyundai/Kia/Genesis 10-yr/100k) and shorter than Mercedes' overlap coverage.

Complimentary maintenance & perks74
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

BMW Ultimate Care includes 3-yr/36,000-mi factory-scheduled maintenance (oil, filters, brake fluid, inspections) — one of the better complimentary programs in luxury (Audi and Mercedes-Benz provide little to nothing at that duration). Paired with 4-yr/unlimited-mile roadside assistance and BMW ConnectedDrive/eCall trials. No included charging/fuel credits (gas-only).

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$41,047 (≈$31,847 depreciation + $9,200 maintenance)
16/100
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

$58,975 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (46% retained, or about $27,129) leaves about $31,847 in depreciation. Add the projected $9,200 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $41,047 in total.

6Reliability & QualityOne of the 4 Series's strongest categories.3.37B+
Predicted reliability80
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Consumer Reports has rated the current G22 4 Series roughly average predicted reliability, and J.D. Power quality scores for the model land in the low-80s. Sharing the mature B48/B58 powertrains and G20/G22 platform with the 3/2 Series lends a settled read; the 2026 LCI refresh carries mostly cosmetic and infotainment changes with modest early-life risk.

Brand reliability track record72
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

BMW brand consistently lands mid-pack in dependability studies — J.D. Power 2024 VDS placed BMW near industry average, and Consumer Reports 2024 brand rankings put BMW in the middle third. Not a top-5 dependability brand but well ahead of most European rivals other than Porsche.

Recall & TSB history78
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

The G22 4 Series has accumulated a modest recall count over the generation — including software/backup-camera items, seatbelt anchor, and a couple of electrical campaigns — but no systemic powertrain or fire-related actions. TSB volume is typical for a BMW model.

Powertrain durability reputation87
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

The 430i's B48 2.0T and the M440i's B58 3.0T inline-six (with 48V mild hybrid) are among BMW's most durable modern engines — the B58 in particular has an excellent high-mileage reputation (also used in the Toyota GR Supra) and pairs with the exceptionally proven ZF 8HP automatic.

Interior material quality84
#3 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

The 4 Series cabin uses SensaTec/leatherette or Vernasca leather, aluminum or wood trims, and BMW's crisp switchgear with the curved display; reviewers rate materials as competitive-to-strong for the mid-$50K luxury coupe class, though below the plusher Mercedes CLE Coupe on perceived richness.

Fit & finish84
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Munich-plant assembly is consistently tight with strong panel gaps and solid door thunk; long-term reviews cite few rattles for the G22, and J.D. Power IQS places BMW at or slightly above industry average. Not quite Lexus-level flawless but strong for the class.

Dealer & service network78
#3 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

BMW operates ~340 US dealers with dense metro and suburban coverage but thinner rural presence; J.D. Power CSI rates BMW above the premium-brand average, though hourly labor rates are among the highest in the industry.

Parts availability & repair cost66
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Parts availability is strong thanks to BMW's dense US network and a deep aftermarket (FCP Euro, ECS Tuning, Turner), but OEM parts and dealer labor push repair costs well above mainstream norms and above the luxury median for out-of-warranty ownership.

7Technology & InfotainmentThe 4 Series's best-graded category.3.57A-
Touchscreen size
14.9 in (BMW Curved Display, standard)
93/100
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Post-LCI 4 Series Coupe adopted BMW's Curved Display: a 12.3" driver instrument panel merged with a 14.9" central touchscreen behind a single glass, standard on the 430i volume trim. Among the larger displays in the luxury coupe class.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness79
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

iDrive 8.5 on the Curved Display is fast and graphically rich; the 4 Series is one of the last BMWs to keep the physical iDrive rotary controller alongside touch input, which reviewers cite as a big usability win. Climate controls migrated into the touchscreen, which draws some criticism.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto88
#3 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are standard on every 4 Series Coupe trim (430i, 430i xDrive, M440i xDrive) with no subscription. Pairing is quick and stable.

Voice control & native navigation83
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant ("Hey BMW") handles natural-language commands for climate, nav, and vehicle functions. BMW Maps with cloud-based routing and Real Time Traffic Information is standard and quite good — arguably worth using over phone projection.

Audio system quality82
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Standard 10-speaker Hi-Fi is adequate for the cabin; optional Harman Kardon Surround Sound (464W, 16 speakers) bundled in the Premium Package is a meaningful step up and typical for the class. No Bowers & Wilkins tier available on the 4 Series.

Digital instrument cluster86
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

12.3" fully digital cluster within the Curved Display is standard on all trims. Crisp, offers multiple driving-mode layouts and integrated map view; slightly less customizable than Audi Virtual Cockpit but larger and better integrated visually.

OTA update capability78
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

BMW Remote Software Upgrade delivers periodic OTA updates covering iDrive, maps, and select vehicle functions. Scope is narrower than Tesla/Rivian whole-vehicle updates but broader than maps-only rivals.

Companion app & remote functions85
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

My BMW app covers remote start/climate, lock/unlock, vehicle location, and BMW Digital Key Plus (Ultra Wideband) for compatible iPhone and Android devices. Core ConnectedDrive functions free for the first several years.

Charging ports & device power72
#3 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Two front USB-C ports and rear USB-C outlets standard; wireless phone charging tray is bundled in the Premium Package rather than standard. Adequate for the segment; no 120V outlets.

Keyless & remote access82
#3 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Comfort Access keyless entry with push-button start is standard on M440i and available on 430i via option group. BMW Digital Key Plus (UWB, unlocks without waking the phone) is available and rare at this price. Remote start via My BMW app included.

Camera & parking aids78
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Rear-view camera and Park Distance Control (front and rear sensors) are standard; optional Parking Assistant Plus adds Surround View with 3D visualization and automated parallel/perpendicular parking. Image quality is good.

Head-up display availability78
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Full-color HUD projecting speed, nav directions, and driver-assist status is optional via the Premium Package on 430i and included within higher option groups on M440i. Broadly attainable rather than volume-trim standard.

8Use-Case FitOne of the 4 Series's weakest categories.1.27D
Kid & car-seat practicality42
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Two-door coupe with LATCH anchors at the outboard rear positions, but loading kids and car seats requires tipping a front seat forward every time. Rear legroom around 34 in is slightly better than the 2 Series but still tight for rear-facing seats. Frustrating for daily family logistics.

Family safety package72
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

BMW's Active Driving Assistant (forward-collision warning with city AEB, blind-spot detection, lane-departure warning, active cruise) is standard across the range, but the 4 Series Coupe is a low-volume body that has not earned a current-generation IIHS Top Safety Pick and NHTSA does not publish a full 5-star rating for it.

Family road-trip comfort50
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Trunk grows to 12 cu ft and rear legroom is marginally better than the 2 Series, but the sloping coupe roofline compresses rear headroom, there are no rear-seat climate vents on standard trims, and four-up plus luggage is a squeeze for multi-hour trips.

Daily driving ease80
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Refined 2.0L turbo-four with 48V mild-hybrid assist, ZF 8-speed, standard Active Driving Assistant, well-bolstered sport seats and BMW's iDrive 8.5 combine into a low-fatigue daily. Firm ride on run-flats and low seating position are minor drawbacks.

Commuting cost efficiency55
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

430i RWD returns ~28 mpg combined and 430i xDrive ~27 mpg, competitive for a rear/AWD luxury coupe but requiring premium fuel. BMW consumables (run-flat tires, brake service, out-of-warranty maintenance) push per-mile cost above mainstream commuters.

Parking & maneuverability76
#3 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

At ~187.9 in long and 72.9 in wide with a ~38.7 ft turning circle, the 4 Series is bigger and less nimble in tight parking than the 2 Series but still manageable in the city; standard reversing camera and available Parking Assistant Plus with 360° cameras help. Coupe C-pillar creates over-shoulder blind spots.

Work capability12
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Not rated for towing in the US market, no bed, no published payload, and only a 12 cu-ft trunk. Effectively no meaningful work capability.

Durability for work duty22
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Luxury-oriented interior with Sensatec/leather trims, carpeted trunk, and no wash-out surfaces. BMW B48/B58 engines are durable in normal service but the car has no fleet reputation for hard-use work.

Jobsite & upfit practicality12
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

No cargo-area 120V outlet, no bed tie-downs, no factory trailer hitch, no roof-rack system on the coupe body, and no upfit ecosystem. Essentially zero work-oriented provisions.

Long-distance comfort & range80
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Excellent front sport seats, quiet highway cruise, standard adaptive cruise and lane keep, and a 15.6-gal fuel tank giving ~430-mi highway range make the 4 Series a strong two-up tourer. Coupe roofline still limits four-up endurance and rear amenities are thin.

Outdoor & adventure capability34
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

xDrive AWD is available on 430i and standard on M440i and helps with snow and light gravel, but ground clearance of ~5.5 in, run-flat performance tires, no factory roof rack, and no factory hitch make it pavement-bound. Fine as a snow commuter; not a genuine adventure enabler.

Gear & luggage flexibility42
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

12 cu-ft trunk is larger than the 2 Series and the 40/20/40 folding rear with ski pass-through helps for skis and long items, but the small coupe aperture, absence of roof rails on the coupe body, and no factory hitch cap bulky-gear flexibility.

Handling & agility84
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

The G22 4 Series on BMW's CLAR platform delivers composed body control, strong grip and near 50/50 weight distribution; standard RWD (or optional xDrive) and taut adaptive damping make it one of the better-handling luxury coupes. Larger and heavier than the 2 Series so slightly less darty, but more planted at speed.

Steering feel78
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Quick, accurate rack with well-judged weight and consistent effort build-up, but BMW's current variable-ratio EPS is criticized by reviewers for muted on-center feedback compared with older hydraulic BMW systems. Precise enough for confident placement without being especially communicative.

Braking confidence84
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Firm, linear pedal with strong bite and good fade resistance; instrumented 70-mph stops for the M440i xDrive land in the 155-160 ft range on all-seasons, better on summer rubber. Optional M Sport brakes further boost repeatable performance.

Powertrain smoothness & response92
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

BMW's B48 turbo-four (430i, 255 hp) and B58 turbo-six (M440i, 382 hp with 48V mild hybrid) paired with the ZF 8-speed automatic are benchmarks for drivability: prompt tip-in, minimal turbo lag, and near-imperceptible shifts. MHEV integration smooths stop/start and low-speed torque delivery.

Drivetrain noise & vibration87
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

The M440i's B58 inline-six has a rich, cultured tone under load and the 430i's B48 four is well-isolated for its class. Some cabin sound is synthesized in Sport modes, but background NVH is low and cruising is quiet.

Turning circle
39.4 ft (curb-to-curb, RWD; slightly larger with xDrive)
10/100
#3 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

BMW USA specification sheet for the G22 4 Series Coupe 430i RWD lists curb-to-curb turning diameter near 39.4 ft; xDrive variants add a small amount to that figure. Long wheelbase for the class limits maneuverability in tight spaces.

Driving position & ergonomics78
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Low, sporty seating position with wide seat/wheel adjustment and supportive standard sport seats; controls are logically placed and an optional head-up display keeps eyes on the road. Rear over-shoulder visibility is compromised by the coupe roofline and thick C-pillars, and the curved-display iDrive 8.5 layout puts more HVAC/audio functions on the touchscreen than on physical controls.

Fun-to-drive factor84
#3 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Rear-drive-biased chassis, willing balance and a charismatic B58 inline-six in M440i form make the 4 Series an engaging drive; even the 430i feels lively thanks to the quick-shifting ZF 8HP. Slightly bigger and less playful than the 2 Series but a more mature grand-tourer feel.

430i base includes iDrive 8.5 dual curved display (12.3"+14.9"), wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, LED headlights, Active Driving Assistant, SensaTec 8-way power sport seats, and dual-zone climate — competitive at ~$50k, but heated seats, moonroof, and Harman Kardon audio still require the Convenience/Premium packages.

Feature value per dollar78
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

M440i xDrive delivers 382 hp B58 turbo I6 with 48V mild-hybrid, AWD, adaptive M suspension, and M Sport differential for ~$62k — strong performance-per-dollar versus Mercedes CLE 450 and Lexus RC 350 F Sport; 430i offers classic BMW dynamics near $50k, but bang-for-buck trails the smaller M240i.

Trim & configuration breadth76
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Two engines (430i turbo I4, M440i turbo I6) each in RWD or xDrive gives four mainstream coupe trims, with the M4 as a separate halo and Convertible/Gran Coupe siblings widening the family — broader than the 2 Series but narrower than the 3 Series, and no manual gearbox on the volume trims.

Sales popularity & market acceptance74
#1 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

4 Series is BMW USA's best-selling coupe and one of the top-selling two-doors in the luxury segment, well ahead of the 2 Series and 8 Series and outselling most direct rivals as the Audi A5 Coupe has exited the US market — a steady mid-to-upper-pack seller within a shrinking coupe segment.

Brand desirability & image86
#3 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

BMW ranks among the top-three global luxury brands with a deep enthusiast following, and the 4 Series inherits the M4 halo; only partly offset by ongoing criticism of the large vertical kidney grille introduced with the G22 generation.

Deals & incentive availability65
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

BMW Financial Services runs subsidized lease and low-APR programs on 430i and M440i most months, and dealer discounts of low-single-digit percent off MSRP are typical — better buyer economics than Porsche or the fresh Mercedes CLE, but nowhere near mainstream-brand rebate territory.

Model freshness78
#3 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

G22 generation launched MY2021 and received its LCI mid-cycle refresh for MY25 (updated front/rear styling, iDrive 8.5 curved display, revised color palette); MY26 carries that refresh forward as a current, up-to-date luxury coupe with no imminent redesign.

Critical reception & awards76
#2 of 5 Luxury Coupes & ConvertiblesCompare all →

Reviews consistently praise the M440i xDrive's chassis, steering feel, and B58 straight-six performance, with the 430i credited for balance if not thrills; critiques focus on the polarizing grille styling and the shadow cast by the fresh Mercedes CLE — no 10Best wins for 430i/M440i, but frequent Editor's Choice mentions.
