The verdict
A capable mid-size luxury sedan, strong on technology and held back by ownership.
The 2024 i5 is the electric version of BMW's all-new 5 Series. It is a quiet, plush and genuinely enjoyable luxury sedan with some of the best cabin tech in the class. The volume eDrive40 makes 335 hp and gets an EPA-rated 295 miles of range on standard 19-inch wheels. The drawbacks are mostly money: about $67,800 to start, steep projected depreciation, and a launch year with ten NHTSA recalls. Neither NHTSA nor IIHS has crash-tested the i5 itself.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the i5's weakest categories.2.21C
The volume 2024 trim is the launch-year RWD eDrive40 with a single 250 kW rear motor. The US range in this first model year was just eDrive40 and M60 xDrive; the xDrive40 had not yet arrived.
Peak torque for the eDrive40 is 317 lb-ft with Sport Boost or Launch Control engaged and 295 lb-ft otherwise. That is mid-pack for a luxury sedan, but it arrives instantly.
BMW quotes 5.7 s to 60 mph for the eDrive40, which is brisk but not a standout for an EV in this class. The M60 is far quicker at 3.7 s.
The electrically excited synchronous motor delivers power smoothly, quietly and immediately with no lag. Reviewers describe it as luxury-grade, and BMW's IconicSounds can be switched off.
A single-speed reduction gear means there are no shifts and no hunting. Adaptive regen in D and one-pedal B mode both transition smoothly.
For 2024 in the US, AWD came only with the top M60 xDrive. The volume eDrive40 is RWD only, and the mid-range xDrive40 did not join the lineup until later (Wikipedia: added March 2024), so AWD is limited to the most expensive trim.
The 2024 i5 is EV-only and comes in just two motor configurations. Buyers who want gas or a PHEV have to look at the separate 5 Series nameplate.
2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.53C+
EPA combined rating for the volume eDrive40 on its standard 19-inch wheels. This is the launch year, before the MY2026 silicon-carbide inverter update raised it to 110 MPGe.
EPA city figure for the volume trim on standard wheels. It is middling for an EV sedan.
The low-drag G60 body helps keep highway efficiency close to the city figure.
The EPA range on the 84.3 kWh usable pack is mid-pack among EV sedans and drops sharply with the larger wheels.
205 kW is a respectable peak for a 400V pack, but it trails the 250–350 kW that 800V rivals reach. The 2024 car uses a CCS1 inlet.
BMW quotes about 30 minutes from 10–80%, which is average for the class. 800V competitors quote roughly 18–20 minutes.
EPA energy-cost estimate for the volume trim at 15k mi/yr. It is low in absolute terms and mid-band among EVs.
As a pure BEV with 11 kW AC, it charges overnight on an ordinary 240V Level 2 circuit, and running costs per mile are low. The 2024 car uses a CCS1 port, so Tesla Supercharger access relies on adapters and network rollout rather than the native NACS inlet that later builds have.
3SafetyMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.30C+
NHTSA has never crash-tested the i5. Its 2024 BMW model list has no i5 entry at all, and the later i5 listings (2026 RWD and AWD) return "Not Rated" on every sub-rating. Per this item's definition, 0 means never rated by NHTSA. It marks missing data, not a zero-star crash result. 2024 is the i5's launch year, so there is no earlier tested year to carry forward.
IIHS has not crash-tested the i5 and gives it no award. Its i5 page carries headlight ratings only. The 2024 Top Safety Pick (not TSP+) goes to the gas 5 Series sedan, tested as a 530i, and IIHS does not extend it to the i5, whose floor battery pack and different mass make the car structurally distinct. The shared G60 body earned Good overall in every test IIHS ran on the 530i, and nothing suggests a concern specific to the i5. That puts it above the 'untested with known concerns' band but well short of a car that actually holds an award.
Active Driving Assistant is standard on every 2024 i5 and covers the passive side well: forward collision warning with AEB and pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert and rear automatic braking. Adaptive cruise control and lane centering are not standard on the eDrive40, the volume trim. Both come in the $2,000 Driving Assistance Professional Package, which is the 'key items optional' case of the 50–79 band. Standard rear automatic braking puts it at the top of that band.
IIHS has published no front crash prevention result for the i5, either vehicle-to-vehicle or pedestrian. The camera/radar AEB system is the one on the gas 5 Series, which earned the top Good rating in IIHS's pedestrian test, including both nighttime scenarios on low beams. That shared hardware supports a solid score, but it has not been confirmed on the i5's own mass and braking hardware, so the item stays below the 80+ band, which requires a published rating.
Blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert and rear automatic braking are standard on every i5, so the top band's active-intervention element comes standard. Active Blind Spot Protection (steering intervention) and front cross-traffic alert require the Driving Assistance Professional Package, which keeps it short of best-in-class.
Lane departure warning is standard. IIHS lists lane departure prevention as optional, and true centering (Active Lane Keeping Assistant with side-collision avoidance) comes only in the Driving Assistance Professional Package. When fitted, the system is the same well-reviewed G60 setup that holds the lane through curves, with eye-tracking driver monitoring. Being optional only is what keeps it out of the top band.
When equipped, ACC with Stop & Go works across the full speed range and is closely integrated with Highway Assistant, which is top-band behaviour. The deduction is for availability: adaptive cruise is not standard on the 2024 i5 eDrive40, so a buyer who skips the $2,000 package gets conventional cruise on a $66,800 luxury EV.
Highway Assistant, new with the G60 for 2024, allows hands-free driving up to 85 mph on mapped limited-access highways with eye-tracking driver monitoring. It adds Active Lane Change, which the driver confirms with a glance at the mirror. It sits below the very top because it is optional and BMW's mapped network is narrower than Super Cruise's.
IIHS rated both of the i5's headlight variations Good, so every 2024 i5 (eDrive40 or M60, with or without the Premium/Executive package) has top-rated lighting, with high-beam assist on both. It falls short of the 90s because neither variation is curve-adaptive. The base lamps' high beams were only 'fair' on all four curves, and both low beams produced some glare.
The i5 shares the G60 5 Series glasshouse. Forward sightlines over a fairly low cowl are good, but the high beltline and thick C-pillars common to the class leave real rear-quarter blind zones. A reversing camera and park assist are standard, but the 3D surround view is in the optional Parking Assistant Plus, so compensation is only partial.
IIHS has published no LATCH rating for the i5, so this is scored from the layout. It has the usual mid-size sedan setup: two sets of lower anchors in the outboard rear seats and three top tethers, set into a roomy G60 rear cabin with wide door openings. It scores slightly below the gas 5 Series because the floor battery pack raises the rear floor, which pushes knees up and makes car-seat installation a bit more cramped. The lower anchors also sit behind seat-back trim.
4Space & ComfortGrades above the middle of the scale.3.02B
Every 2024 i5 sedan seats five on a 2+3 layout.
Generous front headroom for a mid-size luxury sedan, on par with the gas 5 Series.
Front legroom is ordinary for the class, identical to the gas G60 5 Series.
Published rear headroom matches the gas 5 Series, but Consumer Reports found the rear tight for taller passengers over the battery floor.
Mid-pack rear legroom; the battery floor limits toe space under the front seats.
The trunk gives up about a cubic foot to the EV hardware and Consumer Reports calls it modest for the class; there is no front trunk.
Competitive console and door storage with a wireless charging tray and 40/20/40 folding rear seat, but no frunk and nothing clever beyond the class norm.
Front seats are widely praised as extremely comfortable with 4-way lumbar; the rear bench is less accommodating because of the raised floor.
Standard rear air springs and the low-slung battery mass give a pampering yet controlled ride.
Silent electric drive and good insulation make the i5 one of the quietest cabins in the class.
Heated front seats, heated wheel and app-based cabin preconditioning are standard on the i5; ventilated and multi-function seats and rear sunshades are optional packages.
5Cost of OwnershipThe i5's lowest-graded category.0.00F
The 2024 i5 launched the G60 generation at $66,800 + $995 destination for the eDrive40; the AWD xDrive40 was added in March 2024 and the M60 xDrive topped the range at $84,100 + destination. That is far above the sedan band.
The eDrive40 is the volume trim. A typical dealer-stock build adds the Premium Package plus paint and wheel options, which lands it around $71k. That is above the sedan volume-trim band.
With an EV drivetrain there is no oil service. Routine work is limited to cabin filters, brake fluid, tires and rotations, and the first 3 years/36k mi of scheduled service is included. Heavy curb weight speeds up tire wear.
Luxury EV sedans depreciate steeply, and lease-credit-driven 2024 sales flooded the used market. Recharged models 40–45% retention, and CarEdge projects 46% (54% depreciation). Early used listings in the high $40Ks for a car that cost about $68k new point to the lower end of that range.
BMW's New Vehicle Limited Warranty is 4 yr / 50,000 mi. That is standard for German luxury brands and trails Genesis's 5 yr / 60k.
BMW covers the high-voltage battery for 8 yr / 100,000 mi, the industry-standard EV term. Hyundai/Kia/Genesis offer 10-year EV coverage.
Owner benefits include BMW Ultimate Care (3 yr / 36,000 mi scheduled maintenance), 4-yr unlimited-mile roadside assistance, and a ConnectedDrive trial. 2024 i5 buyers also got a complimentary Electrify America charging plan (30-minute sessions for 2 years). That is a solid perk set, but short of rivals' multi-year maintenance packages.
$71,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (40% retained, or about $28,400) leaves about $42,600 in depreciation. Add the projected $3,200 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $45,800 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.26C
2024 is the first model year of the G60-based i5, so it carries first-year risk from the new electrical architecture and iDrive 8.5 software. Consumer Reports rates its reliability about average, with a thin sample behind that rating. The 5th-gen eDrive hardware it shares with the i4 has rated well with CR, but the first-year i5 has heavy recall activity and electronics complaints. Those keep it just below the segment median.
In dependability rankings BMW sits in the upper middle: ahead of Audi and Mercedes and near the top of the premium brands in J.D. Power's long-term study. It trails Lexus and Toyota, and its initial-quality scores are below average, mostly because of software defects.
NHTSA lists 10 recalls for the 2024 i5, and several are systemic or serious. Four are integrated-brake-system campaigns, and the later ones re-remedy cars already repaired under earlier ones. Beyond the brakes: a steering universal joint that may break, a drive-motor software fault that can cut drive power, a high-voltage battery module weld defect with fire risk, an A/C wiring-harness fire-risk campaign, a pedestrian-alert sound-generator failure (FMVSS 141), and an inoperative hands-on-detection fault. That is more than the gas 5 Series, because the i5 adds its own EV-specific campaigns on top of the shared G60 recalls.
The eDrive40's rear electrically excited synchronous motor and roughly 84 kWh pack are BMW 5th-gen eDrive hardware, which has run in the iX and i4 since 2022 without widespread motor or pack failures. An EV drivetrain also has far fewer wear items than a combustion engine. The score is held down by the 2024-specific campaigns: a drive-motor software recall for loss of drive power and a (very small-population) battery-module weld recall.
The cabin is the same as the G60 5 Series: modern and premium in the touch zones, with a glass iDrive controller, the ambient interaction bar and metal switchgear. Reviewers fault plasticky door panels, heavy gloss-black trim and synthetic-looking trim and upholstery against E-Class and EQE rivals. Good for the class, but not class-leading.
Reviewers describe tight, consistent physical assembly from the Dingolfing plant. Against that, the first-year car has electronics defects: iDrive 8.5 freezes, CarPlay dropouts and digital-key failures, plus a pedestrian-alert module fault serious enough to need a recall. Modern initial-quality studies count these as defects, and BMW scored below the industry average in 2024.
About 340 franchised BMW dealers cover all 50 states, most equipped for high-voltage service. BMW's service satisfaction is in the upper middle of the premium brands, and the 4-year/50,000-mile vehicle warranty plus the 8-year/100,000-mile high-voltage battery warranty keep early ownership inside the network.
OEM parts supply is dependable, but EV-specific components (high-voltage modules, eDrive units) are dealer-only, and the independent and aftermarket base for a new-generation BMW EV is thin. Integrated brake module replacements are expensive, though routine EV maintenance is lighter than on the gas 5 Series, with no oil changes.
7Technology & InfotainmentThe i5's best-graded category.3.79A
A large 14.9-inch center screen is standard on every 2024 i5.
iDrive 8.5 is quick and keeps the rotary controller, but moving climate into the touchscreen draws criticism as distracting.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every i5 trim.
BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant handles natural speech, and cloud-based BMW Maps adds EV route planning with charger preconditioning.
Harman Kardon premium audio is standard and Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround sound is available.
A configurable 12.3-inch digital cluster is standard as part of the Curved Display.
iDrive 8.5 Remote Software Upgrades update vehicle functions, not just maps, and BMW sells on-demand features over the air.
My BMW App covers lock/unlock, locate, cabin preconditioning and charge scheduling, with Digital Key available.
USB-C front and rear plus standard wireless charging; no household AC outlet or vehicle-to-load.
Comfort access and phone-as-key (Digital Key) are standard; remote preconditioning via the app takes the place of remote start.
Rear camera and parking sensors standard; Parking Assistant Plus adds surround view, Remote 3D View and automated parking.
A large full-color HUD is available via the Premium Package on the eDrive40, and Consumer Reports rates it excellent.
8Use-Case FitOne of the i5's weakest categories.1.51D
LATCH in the outboard seats and wide rear doors suit car seats, but the raised EV floor, limited toe space and modest trunk make family logistics tighter than in the gas 5 Series.
Standard Active Driving Assistant covers collision warning, blind spot and lane departure, and the G60 sedan earned an IIHS award, though Driving Assistance Professional costs extra.
Quiet, plush and well-equipped, but the 17.3 cu ft trunk and charging stops limit gear for four on long trips.
Smooth, silent EV drive with one of the best one-pedal regen modes makes the i5 effortless in traffic.
105 MPGe and a $700/yr EPA energy cost make it far cheaper per mile than gas luxury rivals.
A 199-inch body with a ~40-ft turning circle (unless optional Integral Active Steering) is large in town, though cameras and parking assistance help.
No US tow rating or factory hitch and a modest sedan trunk; not a work vehicle.
Luxury-oriented interior with glass controls and vegan leather, no work or fleet pedigree.
No AC outlet or vehicle-to-load, no roof rails or hitch; essentially no work provisions.
Superb highway comfort and quiet with available hands-free Highway Assistant, tempered by a 295-mile EPA range and 205 kW charging.
The volume eDrive40 is rear-drive only, with low ground clearance and no roof rails or tow rating; pavement-bound.
The 40/20/40 folding rear seat helps with long items, but a 17.3 cu ft trunk, no frunk and no hitch limit bulky gear.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the i5's strongest categories.3.16B
Low center of gravity, quick steering and minimal roll make the heavy i5 surprisingly agile and balanced.
Steering is sweet, direct and precise, though feedback is filtered as in most modern BMWs.
Short panic stops, no fade, and seamless blending between regen and friction braking.
Linear, seamless single-motor delivery and adaptive recuperation are impeccably calibrated.
Near-silent electric motor, with optional Hans Zimmer IconicSounds for character.
Without rear-wheel steering the i5's turning circle is large for a sedan.
Excellent seat and wheel adjustment, but touch-only climate controls and awkward door latches hurt ergonomics.
The eDrive40 comes alive on back roads with real BMW balance, though its 335 hp and EV mass make it more refined than thrilling (the M60 is the enthusiast pick).
10Value & Market PositionOne of the i5's strongest categories.3.23B+
The 2024 eDrive40 comes standard with the curved 12.3+14.9-in iDrive 8.5 display, wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, a panoramic roof, heated front seats, Harman Kardon audio and Parking Assistant. Ventilated/massage seats, heated rear seats, the 360° camera and Driving Assistant Professional all cost extra. Rivals such as the Genesis Electrified G80 bundle more as standard.
At about $67.8k, the eDrive40 delivers 335 hp, roughly 295 mi EPA range and polished 5 Series refinement. The price is fair for the class but no bargain: Tesla Model S and Lucid Air Pure offer more range and speed per dollar, and the Genesis Electrified G80 offers more standard content.
2024 opened with only two trims, the eDrive40 RWD and the M60 xDrive. The xDrive40 AWD arrived mid-year in March 2024 and filled the gap. The option and package matrix is broad, but there is no Touring wagon in the US and only three powertrains.
In its launch year the i5 took a meaningful share of combined 5 Series/i5 US sales. Lease incentives helped volume, which is respectable for a luxury EV sedan but far from segment-leading.
BMW is an aspirational luxury brand with strong loyalty, and the i5 carries the 5 Series nameplate's executive-sedan halo directly.
Through 2024 BMW Financial Services passed the $7,500 federal commercial EV credit through on leases and stacked it with substantial lease cash and dealer discounts on i5 inventory. That gave buyers some of the strongest deals in the luxury EV segment without fire-sale positioning.
2024 is the launch year of the all-new G60 generation, which entered production in July 2023 and reached US dealers on 28 October 2023. It runs BMW's current iDrive 8.5, the 5th-generation eDrive and the latest driver-assist stack, with no redesign risk for years.
Reviewers broadly praised the 2024 i5 for ride quality, refinement and highway driver assistance; Car and Driver, Edmunds and MotorTrend all rated it highly. Critiques centered on curb weight, styling, and range per dollar trailing Tesla/Lucid. It is well regarded but not a consistent comparison-test winner.
