The verdict
A capable mid-size luxury sedan, strong on technology and held back by ownership.
The 2025 BMW i5 is one of the quietest and most polished electric sedans you can buy. It has a smooth 335-hp powertrain, a hushed cabin and a standard 14.9-inch curved display. It has two big catches. At $68,275 to start, and about $71,500 as typically equipped, it is expensive and loses value fast, with roughly 38% of its price left after five years. Its 295-mile EPA range and 30-minute 10–80% fast charge are only average for the money. Buy it for refinement and the BMW cabin, ideally on a discounted lease, rather than as a range or value play.
Jump to scoresStrengths

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the i5's weakest categories.2.44C+
Volume trim is the RWD eDrive40 with a single 250 kW rear motor. MY2025 is the second year of the G60-generation i5 and adds the dual-motor xDrive40 (389 hp) between the eDrive40 and the 593-hp M60.
The eDrive40's rear motor peaks at 317 lb-ft (295 lb-ft without Sport Boost); instant EV torque makes it feel stronger off the line than the mid-pack figure suggests.
Manufacturer-quoted 5.7 s for the volume RWD eDrive40 — brisk rather than fast for a luxury EV; the M60 drops to 3.7 s.
Smooth, near-silent and immediate EV delivery with linear throttle mapping; reviewers single out its luxury-grade quietness. Optional IconicSounds can be switched off.
Single-speed reduction gear — no shifts to critique; the adaptive regen mode and B-mode one-pedal driving are well calibrated and hunt-free.
For 2025 dual-motor xDrive is available on two of three trims (new xDrive40 and M60), so AWD no longer requires the top trim; the base eDrive40 remains RWD.
The i5 nameplate is EV-only: three motor tunes on one 84.3 kWh battery, no gas or PHEV option under the i5 badge (those are sold as the 5 Series).
2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.54C+
EPA combined rating for the volume RWD eDrive40 on standard 19-inch wheels; efficiency drops notably with larger wheels and dual motors. MY2025 predates the 2026 SiC-inverter efficiency update.
EPA city rating for the volume trim; modest for an EV sedan, reflecting the i5's size and weight.
Good steady-state efficiency aided by the G60's low drag coefficient and active aero shutters.
EPA range from the 84.3 kWh pack on the volume eDrive40; mid-pack among EV sedans and strongly wheel-size dependent.
Respectable peak for a 400V architecture but short of the 250–350 kW peaks of 800V rivals.
BMW-quoted half-hour 10–80% session on a 205 kW-capable charger — class average, slower than the ~18-minute 800V competitors.
EPA energy-cost estimate for the volume trim at 15k mi/yr; low in absolute terms, mid-band within the EV class.
Pure BEV with cheap home charging — 11 kW AC fills the pack overnight on a 240V circuit and Plug & Charge eases public sessions. For MY2025 the car uses a CCS1 inlet, so Tesla Supercharger access depends on an adapter, a small practicality gap vs the native-NACS 2026 cars.
3SafetyOne of the i5's strongest categories.3.22B+
NHTSA has never crash-tested the i5: there is no 2025 i5 entry in the NCAP database at all, and the 2026 i5 entries return Not Rated on every measure. The value is an estimate anchored on the G60 5 Series' uniformly Good IIHS structural results, matching how the sister 5 Series is recorded, not a claimed NHTSA result.
IIHS has not crash-tested the i5 and it holds no Top Safety Pick award; its page carries only headlight ratings. The structurally related G60 5 Series is a 2025 Top Safety Pick with Good in small overlap (both sides), updated side and original moderate overlap, but IIHS does not extend those results to the heavier, battery-carrying i5, so the strong structural evidence is indirect and the award is absent.
Every 2025 i5 gets the Driving Assistant suite standard — forward collision mitigation with pedestrian AEB, blind-spot detection, lane departure warning and prevention, rear cross-traffic alert and rear automatic braking. Adaptive cruise is not standard on the volume eDrive40; it requires the $2,350 Premium Package, which on a $67,100 car is the "core standard, ACC optional" pattern of the mid band.
IIHS has not run front crash prevention tests on the i5 itself, but it uses the same camera/radar AEB hardware as the G60 5 Series, which earned Good under the tougher pedestrian protocol, avoiding collisions in every day and night scenario. Scored slightly below the 5 Series because the result is inherited rather than measured on this car.
Blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert and rear automatic braking are standard on the 2025 i5, ahead of the 2025 gas 5 Series where rear braking became optional. Active Blind Spot Protection with steering intervention and front cross-traffic alert stay behind the optional Driving Assistance Professional Package.
Lane departure warning and active lane departure prevention are standard; true lane centering comes with the optional Active Driving Assistant / Driving Assistance Professional content. Reviewers describe the centering as smooth and well calibrated on marked highways.
Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go is a refined full-speed-range system with smooth gap-keeping and resume, and pairs with Traffic Jam / Highway Assistant when the Professional package is fitted. It is an extra-cost option on the volume eDrive40, which keeps it out of the top band.
BMW Highway Assistant offers hands-free driving up to 85 mph on mapped divided highways with driver-monitoring camera, plus gaze-confirmed Active Lane Change — mature capability on par with Super Cruise and BlueCruise in behavior, though mapped coverage is narrower and it requires the extra-cost package.
IIHS rated both available i5 headlight variations Good, so every i5 ships with Good-rated LED projectors and high-beam assist. Neither is curve-adaptive, and each showed only fair visibility on one gradual curve.
The i5 shares the G60 5 Series body: a high beltline, deep dash and thick C-pillars leave over-the-shoulder blind zones and the shallow rear glass limits the view back. Rear camera and parking sensors are standard; surround view is optional with the parking assistant package.
Two sets of lower anchors in the outboard rear seats plus three top tethers, with anchors set behind trim slits that take some digging — the same layout as the G60 5 Series. The i5's battery floor raises the rear footwell slightly, but door apertures are wide; three car seats across is a squeeze.
4Space & ComfortGrades above the middle of the scale.3.04B
Standard 5-passenger layout (2 front + 3 rear bench) on eDrive40, xDrive40 and M60.
US-published front headroom for the 2025 eDrive40, which carries a moonroof as standard; generous for a mid-size sedan.
Front legroom is mid-pack for the mid-size luxury class; tall drivers fit, but rivals like the E-Class quote a bit more.
Rear headroom stays competitive despite the battery raising the floor; the G60's roofline is less fastback than the EQE's.
Rear legroom is adequate for adults but no better than average for the class, and the battery-raised floor puts knees higher than in the gas 5 Series.
Trunk is slightly smaller than the gas 5 Series (18.4 cu ft) because of the battery and rear motor packaging, and there is no front trunk, but it is still a usable mid-size sedan trunk.
Conventional but competent storage: a center console bin, door pockets, a wireless charging tray and 40/20/40 split-folding rear seats. No frunk, no underfloor tricks and no onboard AC power.
Power front sport seats are supportive over long drives, and multi-function seats with massage and ventilation are available. The rear bench is fine for two adults but sits on a raised floor that reduces thigh support.
The heavy, long-wheelbase chassis rides smoothly with good body control; rear air springs smooth the eDrive40 further. Large optional wheels add some firmness over sharp impacts.
A near-silent EV drivetrain, acoustic glazing and heavy insulation make it one of the quietest mid-size sedans at highway speed. Only full-size flagships like the i7 and EQS are quieter.
For 2025, heated front seats became standard on the eDrive40, and app-based remote preconditioning is standard. The heated steering wheel is a standalone option or part of the Premium Package, and ventilated seats are a $500 option. Four-zone climate and heated rear seats are optional.
5Cost of OwnershipThe i5's lowest-graded category.0.00F
The 2025 i5 eDrive40 starts at $67,100, $300 more than 2024, plus a $1,175 destination charge that rose $180. The AWD xDrive40 became a full-year trim at $70,100, and the M60 held at $84,100. All of these sit far above the sedan band.
The eDrive40 remains the volume trim. A typical dealer-stock build adds the Premium Package plus metallic paint or a wheel upgrade, which puts it in the low $70Ks. That is above the sedan volume-trim band.
With an EV drivetrain there is no oil service. Routine work is limited to cabin filters, brake fluid, tires and rotations, and the first 3 yr / 36k mi of scheduled service is included. The car's ~5,000-lb curb weight speeds up tire wear.
Luxury EV sedans depreciate steeply. Lease-credit-driven sales flooded the used market with off-lease i5s, and when the federal EV credits ended in late 2025, used-EV demand softened further. Estimates fall between the i4's ~35% and CarEdge's ~46%.
BMW's New Vehicle Limited Warranty is 4 yr / 50,000 mi. That matches Mercedes and Audi but trails Genesis's 5 yr / 60k.
BMW covers the high-voltage battery for 8 yr / 100,000 mi, the industry-standard EV term. Hyundai/Kia/Genesis offer 10-year EV coverage.
Owners get BMW Ultimate Care (3 yr / 36,000 mi scheduled maintenance), 4-yr unlimited-mile roadside assistance and a ConnectedDrive trial. The 2025 charging perk shrank from 2024's unlimited 30-minute Electrify America sessions to a 1,000 kWh / 24-month credit, so the perk set is solid but less generous than before.
$71,500 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (38% retained, or about $27,170) leaves about $44,330 in depreciation. Add the projected $3,300 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $47,630 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.62C+
2025 is the second model year of the G60-based i5, so the first-year software and brake teething problems are partly behind it. Consumer Reports still predicts only about-average reliability, extrapolated from BMW's other EVs and the brand score rather than a deep i5 sample. Its model-level EV ranking is stronger, which lifts the i5 to the edge of the segment median.
BMW is the most dependable German premium brand and sits in the upper middle of the whole industry, behind Lexus and Toyota. Its initial-quality scores lag its long-term dependability, mostly because of software defects.
NHTSA covers MY2025 i5s with 5 campaigns, half the 2024 count. The EV-specific drive-motor software recall (25V395) and the battery-weld recall do not reach 2025. The remaining campaigns are still serious and shared across the G60/G70 platform: three integrated-brake-system recalls (loss of brake assist/ABS), a steering spindle U-joint that may break, and an A/C wiring-harness fire risk.
The volume eDrive40 uses BMW's 5th-gen eDrive electrically excited synchronous motor and an ~84 kWh pack. That hardware has run in the iX and i4 since 2022 without widespread motor or pack failures, and an EV drivetrain has few wear items. No 2025 i5 recall touches the drive unit or the HV battery. The dual-motor xDrive40 added for 2025 uses the same component family.
This is the unchanged G60 cabin: premium where hands fall, with a crystal-effect iDrive controller, the ambient interaction bar and metal switchgear. Reviewers still note plasticky door panels, heavy gloss-black trim and vegan Veganza upholstery that trails E-Class/EQE richness. Good for the class, but not class-leading.
Dingolfing assembly is tight and consistent, and reviewers report no rattle or panel-gap pattern. In its second year, OTA updates have addressed some of the early iDrive 8.5 freezes and connectivity faults, but owners still report software glitches, which initial-quality studies count as defects.
About 340 franchised BMW dealers cover all 50 states, most equipped for high-voltage service, with loaners standard. Service satisfaction is in the upper middle of the premium brands. The 4-year/50,000-mile vehicle warranty and 8-year/100,000-mile HV battery warranty keep early ownership inside the network.
OEM parts supply is dependable, but EV-specific components (HV modules, eDrive units, the integrated brake module) are dealer-only and expensive, and the independent-shop base for a new-generation BMW EV is thin. Routine maintenance is lighter than on the gas 5 Series, with no oil changes.
7Technology & InfotainmentThe i5's best-graded category.3.83A
A 14.9-inch central touchscreen is standard on every trim, sharing the BMW Curved Display glass with the 12.3-inch cluster.
iDrive 8.5 with QuickSelect is fast, sharp and keeps the rotary controller, but climate and many functions are touch-only, which reviewers consistently criticize.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on all 2025 i5 trims.
The BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant understands natural language. Native navigation has EV route planning with charger stops and battery preconditioning, which gives a real reason to use it over phone projection.
A Harman Kardon premium system is standard on the eDrive40, and an 18-speaker Bowers & Wilkins Diamond Surround system is a $950 option. Both are strong.
A 12.3-inch fully digital cluster is standard as part of the Curved Display. It is crisp and offers several layouts, though it is less customizable than MBUX.
BMW Operating System 8.5 receives whole-vehicle Remote Software Upgrades several times a year, and they have added features such as Digital Key Plus improvements and remote parking functions.
The My BMW app is standard and polished: remote climate and preconditioning, lock, locate, charging scheduling and Digital Key Plus. Some ConnectedDrive extras are subscription-based.
USB-C ports in both rows and standard wireless phone charging. There is no household AC outlet or V2L.
Comfort Access proximity entry, push-button start and BMW Digital Key Plus (phone-as-key with UWB) are standard. Remote climate works through the app.
A rear camera and Park Distance Control with front and rear sensors are standard. The 360-degree camera, drive recorder and Parking Assistant Plus come only with the $2,350 Premium Package.
A high-quality head-up display is available, but on the volume eDrive40 it requires the $2,350 Premium Package rather than being standard.
8Use-Case FitOne of the i5's weakest categories.2.07C
Large rear doors, standard rear LATCH and 37.0 in of rear legroom handle car seats well. The battery-raised rear floor, 17.3 cu ft trunk and sedan lift-over are less convenient than a similarly priced BMW SUV.
Standard driver aids include frontal collision warning with automatic braking, Active Blind Spot Detection and Lane Keeping Assistant. The G60 structure earned an IIHS 2024 Top Safety Pick+. Hands-free Highway Assistant costs extra in the $2,500 Driving Assistance Professional package.
A quiet cabin, a comfortable ride and standard premium audio make the i5 a pleasant long-distance car for four. Four-zone climate and heated rear seats are optional, and the 295-mile range and 17.3 cu ft trunk limit how much a family can carry and how far it can go between stops.
Instant torque, adaptive regen with a one-pedal B mode, a hushed cabin and a smooth ride make it nearly effortless in traffic. Touch-heavy controls are the main annoyance.
105 MPGe and 32 kWh/100 mi give an estimated $700/yr in energy, very cheap per mile for a luxury sedan. Luxury insurance, EV tires and BMW labor rates keep it short of the top band.
At about 199 in long with a 40.4-ft turning diameter, it is large for city streets. Front and rear sensors are standard, but the 360-degree camera and parking automation require the Premium Package. Integral Active Steering is optional.
No US tow rating, no bed and a 17.3 cu ft sedan trunk. Not meaningfully work-capable.
A luxury EV with a delicate interior, low ride height and expensive dealer service. It has no fleet or work-duty track record.
No hitch, no onboard AC power or V2L, no washable interior option and no upfit ecosystem. Trunk tie-down loops are the extent of it.
An excellent highway cruiser: quiet, comfortable, with optional hands-free Highway Assistant. A 295-mile EPA range and 205 kW peak DC charging (10–80% in about 30 min) are adequate rather than class-leading. The 2025 car has a CCS1 inlet and needs an adapter at Superchargers.
AWD is available (xDrive40, M60), but the volume eDrive40 is RWD. Low ground clearance, no tow rating and no factory roof rails keep it on pavement and graded gravel.
The 17.3 cu ft trunk and 40/20/40 folding rear seat swallow normal luggage, but there is no frunk, no hitch and no roof rails, so bulky gear is a squeeze.
9Driving ExperienceGrades above the middle of the scale.3.04B
A low center of gravity and well-tuned G60 chassis give composed, secure cornering. The roughly 5,000-lb eDrive40 feels its weight in quick transitions, and optional Integral Active Steering sharpens turn-in.
Quick, accurate electric steering with selectable weighting, but it is muted and isolated compared with older BMWs.
A firm, progressive pedal with smooth regen-to-friction blending and strong stopping power for a heavy EV.
The single-motor RWD drivetrain delivers seamless, well-mapped torque with no shift shock, and the adaptive regen is well calibrated.
The electric motor is near-silent, with well-suppressed inverter whine. IconicSounds Electric is optional and can be switched off.
The long 117.9-in wheelbase gives a wide turning diameter for a sedan; optional rear-wheel steering reduces it.
The low seat has a wide adjustment range and the driving position is good, but climate and many vehicle settings live in touch menus, and pillar thickness slightly hampers sightlines.
The RWD eDrive40 keeps BMW's rear-biased balance and is enjoyable for its size, though more relaxed than thrilling. The M60 is the enthusiast pick.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the i5's strongest categories.3.05B
The eDrive40 comes standard with the curved 14.9-in iDrive 8.5 display, a 12.3-in cluster, wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, a panoramic roof, heated front seats, Harman Kardon audio, Parking Assistant and Active Driving Assistant. However, ventilated and heated rear seats, Driving Assistant Professional and the Bowers & Wilkins audio upgrade are paid options, whereas rivals like the Genesis Electrified G80 include more as standard.
At $68,275, the eDrive40 delivers 335 hp and an EPA-rated range of up to ~295 mi with class-leading refinement. Rivals offer more for similar money, though: the Tesla Model S and Lucid Air Pure give more range per dollar, and the Mercedes EQE 350+ costs about the same. In short, buyers pay for the badge and the chassis polish.
2025 is the first full model year with three trims: eDrive40 RWD, the new xDrive40 AWD (a $3,000 step) and the M60 xDrive. Together with M Sport and Premium packages, that is a sensible, well-spaced spread, though narrower than the gas 5 Series range.
US i5 sales fell 21.5% in calendar 2025 to 6,877 units, and Q4 collapsed 67% after the federal EV credits expired. That is a modest-volume niche seller on a declining trajectory, even though BMW overall set a sales record.
BMW is among the most aspirational premium brands in the US, with strong loyalty, and the i5 carries the 5 Series nameplate's executive-sedan heritage. Weak EV residuals temper how much that brand halo helps resale.
Through September 2025, BMW Financial Services passed the $7,500 commercial EV lease credit through as a cap-cost reduction. After the credit expired, slow sales and swelling inventory kept dealer discounts and subvented lease/APR offers common. Buyers benefited, with deals rather than desperation pricing.
The G60 generation launched for model year 2024 (production started July 2023), so 2025 is its second year, a carry-over with an added AWD trim. It runs current iDrive 8.5 and driver-assist tech, and there is no near-term redesign risk.
Reviewers widely praise the i5's ride, refinement and highway assist, and the 5 Series/i5 family won a Car and Driver 10Best award. Critics knock its curb weight, range per dollar and touch-heavy controls, so it wins some EV sedan comparisons but not most.
