The verdict
A mixed-report mid-size luxury suv, strong on technology and held back by ownership.
The 2022 BMW iX is a fast, quiet and lavishly finished electric luxury SUV, with 516 hp, a 4.4-second 0–60 and up to 324 miles of EPA range. It is also the first model year of the first generation, and that shows: eleven recalls, some covering the high-voltage battery, plus no NHTSA or IIHS crash ratings. It lost roughly two-thirds of its $84,195 sticker within five years, so it is a far better buy used than it was new. Buy one for the cabin and the drive, and check every recall has been done before you sign.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the iX's strongest categories.3.13B
2022 is the iX's launch model year (first generation; refresh not until MY2026). The US lineup was the dual-motor xDrive50 alone; the 610-hp M60 arrived for MY2023.
564 lb-ft from the two electrically excited synchronous motors, above the SUV band ceiling.
BMW's claimed 0–60 for the 2022 xDrive50; instrumented tests beat it.
Dual-motor delivery is instant, silent and linear, with well-judged adaptive regen; reviewers single out the iX's refinement as class-leading.
Single-speed reduction gear per axle — no shifts, hunting or drone; B-mode one-pedal driving is predictable.
BMW rates the iX at 2,500 kg (≈5,500 lbs) with the factory hitch, competitive among luxury EV SUVs; some secondhand US sources quote lower figures.
Every 2022 iX is dual-motor xDrive AWD with fast-acting electric torque distribution; no low range.
Pavement-focused luxury EV: no off-road trim, skid plates, lockers or terrain program; optional air suspension adds some clearance only.
A single powertrain in 2022: the dual-motor xDrive50 EV, with only wheel size varying; the M60 did not arrive until MY2023.
2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.49C+
EPA combined rating for the 2022 xDrive50 on standard 20-inch wheels.
EPA city rating for the volume xDrive50 configuration.
EPA highway rating for the volume xDrive50 configuration.
EPA range from the ~105 kWh (gross) pack was strong for a luxury mid-size EV SUV at launch.
BMW's quoted peak DC rate for the xDrive50 on a 400V architecture; mid-pack versus 800V rivals.
Manufacturer-quoted 10–80% time; slower than 800V EVs but typical of 400V luxury SUVs.
EPA annual energy cost at 15,000 mi/yr.
Charges on standard Level 2 (11 kW onboard AC, ~12 h full charge on 240V) and CCS DC; cheap to keep charged at home, with no fuel-grade concern.
3SafetyOne of the iX's weakest categories.1.93C-
NHTSA never crash-tested the 2022 iX, the launch year of the first generation, so it has no overall, frontal, side or rollover stars. Per the framework convention, 0 marks a vehicle NHTSA never rated: no result exists, which is not the same as zero stars.
IIHS published no crashworthiness results for the 2022 iX, and it appears on no 2022 Top Safety Pick list. Euro NCAP gave the same car five stars in 2021 with 91% adult-occupant protection, so its crash protection is credible but not verified in US testing.
Every US 2022 iX xDrive50 comes with Active Driving Assistant: forward collision warning with AEB and pedestrian/cyclist detection, lane departure warning, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert and speed-limit info. Adaptive cruise and active lane centering are not standard. Base cars get only Dynamic Cruise Control, which is a real gap on an ~$84,000 luxury EV.
The standard camera-and-radar AEB includes City Collision Mitigation and pedestrian/cyclist detection. The same BMW system earned Superior ratings on IIHS-tested models such as the X3 and X5. IIHS never tested front crash prevention on the iX itself, so its day and night pedestrian performance is unverified.
Blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every 2022 iX. Steering intervention (side collision avoidance) and front cross-traffic warning come only with the optional Driving Assistance Professional Package.
US cars get only lane departure warning as standard. Active Lane Keeping Assistant (lane centering) needs the Driving Assistance Professional Package. With the package fitted, reviewers call it smooth and well integrated with adaptive cruise, and it can change lanes when the driver signals.
With the optional package, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Traffic Jam Assistant is a refined system that works across the full speed range, and reviewers call it smooth. Base cars get only Dynamic Cruise Control, which does not follow traffic. That is an unusual omission at this price.
Hands-free driving on the 2022 iX is limited to Extended Traffic Jam Assistant in the Driving Assistance Professional Package. It allows hands-off driving up to about 40 mph on limited-access highways, with a driver-attention camera. That is far narrower than Super Cruise or BlueCruise, and BMW's 85 mph Highway Assistant was not offered on the 2022 iX.
Every iX has slim adaptive LED headlights with automatic high-beam assist. IIHS published no headlight rating for the 2022 iX, so beam quality is inferred from the hardware and BMW's tested models, not measured.
A high seating position and large side glass give a good view forward and to the sides. Thick D-pillars and a small rear window leave blind zones at the rear quarters. A backup camera and parking sensors are standard; Surround View with 3D View requires a package.
The two outboard rear seats have lower LATCH anchors, and all three rear positions have top tethers. The flat floor with no center tunnel and the wide rear doors make it easy to install a seat. Three seats across is tight with larger seats, and the anchors sit behind covers.
4Space & ComfortOne of the iX's weakest categories.1.88C-
The 2022 iX xDrive50 is a two-row, five-seat SUV only.
Generous front headroom for a mid-size luxury SUV.
Published front legroom sits at the bottom of the SUV band, though the flat floor and floating console make the space feel larger than the figure.
Tall roofline gives rear passengers ample headroom.
X5-class rear legroom on a dedicated EV floor with no center tunnel.
No third row is offered on any 2022 iX; scored in the low band per the framework.
Competitive two-row cargo space, below the three-row rivals that dominate the SUV band.
Mid-pack maximum cargo volume for the segment.
The floating hexagonal console leaves an open bin underneath and the flat floor helps, but there is no frunk (the hood is not owner-openable) and no onboard AC outlet.
Heated power front seats with integrated head restraints are widely praised and the rear bench is roomy and supportive; massage comfort seats are optional.
Composed, luxurious ride; two-axle air suspension is optional on the xDrive50, and the steel-sprung car on large wheels is slightly firmer over sharp impacts.
Near-silent electric drive and heavy acoustic isolation make the iX one of the quietest cabins in the class.
Four-zone climate, heated front seats and remote pre-conditioning are standard; ventilated/massage seats, heated rear seats and radiant panel heating come in packages.
5Cost of OwnershipThe iX's lowest-graded category.0.00F
2022 is the iX's launch year, and the xDrive50 is the only US trim; the M60 arrived for 2023. The entry price sits far above the SUV band's $65K ceiling.
The xDrive50 is the only trim. Most examples were sold with the Premium package and a few options, which put the typical sticker in the high $80Ks.
There are no oil changes, regen spares the brakes, and BMW Ultimate Care covers the first 3 years/36K miles of scheduled service. That keeps out-of-pocket costs low for a luxury SUV, with tires and post-warranty BMW labor as the main costs.
Luxury EVs have depreciated steeply. As the launch-year car, with the slower early software and no M60 halo, the 2022 iX tracks slightly below the later years' roughly 38% five-year retention.
BMW's standard US new-vehicle limited warranty is 4 years/50,000 miles, slightly better than the 3/36 mainstream norm.
For an EV the meaningful powertrain coverage is the 8-year/100,000-mile high-voltage battery warranty. Other drive components fall under the 4/50 warranty.
2022 iX buyers get 3 years/36K miles of scheduled maintenance through BMW Ultimate Care and 4 years of unlimited-mile roadside assistance. They also get two years of complimentary 30-minute DC fast-charging sessions at Electrify America, which is multi-year included maintenance plus a meaningful charging perk.
$89,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (36% retained, or about $32,040) leaves about $56,960 in depreciation. Add the projected $3,700 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $60,660 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.05C
The 2022 iX is the launch model year of the first generation (sales began November 2021). Consumer Reports rates it less reliable than other 2022 vehicles. Owner complaints cluster on electrical/infotainment faults and steering, as expected from first-year production.
BMW ranked near the top of the Consumer Reports brand reliability rankings and above the industry average in J.D. Power VDS in the 2022 period, ahead of the other German luxury brands. It still trails Toyota and Lexus.
The launch year carries a heavy recall load, 11 campaigns, including serious high-voltage issues. Recall 22V-541 (internal HV battery damage, fire risk) came with a do-not-drive/park-outside advisory, and a separate campaign covers improperly assembled HV cell modules that can cut drive power. Other campaigns cover the combined charging unit and cruise-control reactivation. The pattern is systemic, not minor.
BMW's fifth-generation eDrive motors and the 111.5 kWh pack show no widespread capacity loss. However, 2022 cars are the earliest production and were hit hardest by the HV battery module and charging-unit recalls, with some drive-motor replacements reported. This is a newer powertrain with real red flags in its first year.
Reviewers rank the iX cabin among the best in the luxury segment, with olive-leaf-tanned leather, microfiber/wool upholstery, open-pore wood and optional crystal controls. Its materials lead the class rather than just matching it.
Dingolfing assembly is generally tight with consistent panel gaps. However, launch-year electrical and software gremlins weigh on initial quality, and reviewers note flimsy-feeling door hardware.
BMW's network of roughly 340-350 US dealers covers metros and interstates well but is thinner in rural areas. In the 2022 launch year, EV-specific training and HV tooling were still rolling out at many stores, so service was inconsistent.
As a low-volume luxury EV with proprietary drive units, battery modules and a carbon-reinforced body structure, the iX is expensive to repair. HV and drive-unit work is dealer-only, and aftermarket support is thin. Routine maintenance is light, and the 8-year/100,000-mile HV battery warranty offsets some of the risk.
7Technology & InfotainmentThe iX's best-graded category.3.50A-
The iX debuted BMW's Curved Display, one glass panel joining a 14.9-in touchscreen and a 12.3-in cluster, standard on the 2022 xDrive50.
iDrive 8 is fast and crisp with a retained rotary controller, but the launch software moved climate controls into the touchscreen and first-year cars had glitches.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on the only 2022 trim.
Standard cloud-based BMW Maps with EV charge-stop routing and a natural-language Intelligent Personal Assistant; AR navigation requires the Convenience package.
18-speaker Harman Kardon is available via packages, with Bowers & Wilkins Diamond surround optional above it; excellent top-end audio.
Crisp, configurable 12.3-in digital cluster standard as part of the Curved Display.
Operating System 8 supports Remote Software Upgrades for vehicle and infotainment functions; early US rollouts were slow.
My BMW app covers remote climate, locking and charge scheduling; BMW Digital Key Plus (UWB) launched with the iX.
USB-C ports in both rows and a wireless pad in the floating console; no household AC outlet.
Comfort Access proximity entry, power tailgate and phone-as-key (Digital Key Plus): full keyless convenience.
Parking sensors and rear camera standard; Surround View with 3D view and Parking Assistant Plus require option packages on the 2022.
A large full-color HUD is available, but only via the Convenience package on the sole 2022 trim.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.12C
Flat rear floor, wide doors and 38.9 in of rear legroom ease car-seat duty; five seats only.
Standard AEB with pedestrian/cyclist detection, blind-spot and cross-traffic alert and a 5-star Euro NCAP result, but the 2022 iX was never rated by NHTSA or IIHS and adaptive cruise needs a package.
Standard four-zone climate, a quiet cabin and a roomy rear seat; 35.5 cu ft behind row two holds a family's luggage.
Silent, smooth and effortless in traffic, with adaptive recuperation and B-mode one-pedal driving.
Electric running costs are low in absolute terms ($900/yr EPA), though 86 MPGe is middling for an EV.
X5-sized footprint with a 42-43 ft turning circle; surround view requires a package on the 2022.
Up to 5,500 lb towing with the factory hitch, but towing slashes EV range and the luxury cabin is no work tool.
First-year luxury EV with delicate sustainable trim materials and no fleet track record; not built for hard use.
No onboard AC power or vehicle-to-load, minimal tie-downs, no upfit ecosystem.
324-mile EPA range on 20-in wheels, ~195 kW DC charging and a library-quiet cabin make a strong tourer; the best highway assist costs extra.
Standard dual-motor AWD and optional air suspension handle gravel and snow, but there is no off-road package and clearance is modest.
77.9 cu ft maximum with 40/20/40 folding and a hitch option, but no frunk.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the iX's strongest categories.2.74B-
A low center of gravity and optional integral active steering keep it stable and controlled, though tuning favors comfort over agility at roughly 5,700 lb.
Accurate but light and filtered; the hexagonal wheel takes acclimation.
Strong stops with well-blended regen; adaptive recuperation is praised, though pedal feel is slightly synthetic.
The 516 hp dual-motor setup delivers seamless, instant, near-silent thrust.
Near-silent motors with optional IconicSounds; no vibration through the controls.
Wide turning circle for a two-row SUV; optional rear-wheel steering tightens it somewhat.
Commanding, adjustable seat and power column, but touch-based climate controls and the hexagonal wheel draw criticism.
Effortless acceleration is entertaining, but it is a refined luxury cruiser rather than a sport SUV.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.50C+
The xDrive50 comes well equipped as standard: dual-motor AWD, the curved 14.9-inch/12.3-inch display, head-up display, heated front seats and wheel, and an electrochromic glass roof. Driving Assistance Pro, Bowers & Wilkins audio and massage seats cost extra, which is typical German luxury practice.
At about $84K the xDrive50 brings 516 hp, EPA range of about 315 miles and a class-leading cabin. That is fair value against the Model X and EQS-class rivals, but it costs far more than a Model Y or Mustang Mach-E. Because it was built in Germany, it did not qualify for the federal purchase credit.
For 2022 the iX came as a single trim, the xDrive50, with only package and wheel choices. The M60 did not arrive until the 2023 model year, so the 2022 range is a take-it-or-leave-it lineup.
US deliveries began in early 2022 and quickly made the iX BMW's best-selling US EV, but launch-year volume was limited by supply. It sold well below the Tesla Model Y/X, so it is a niche luxury-EV seller rather than a segment leader.
BMW is an aspirational luxury brand with a loyal following. The iX's polarizing grille and styling divided opinion at launch, which slightly dents its halo compared with more conventional BMW SUVs.
In 2022, the launch year, EV demand was high and inventory tight, so iX buyers generally paid close to MSRP and some dealers added markups. The $7,500 lease pass-through that made later iX deals attractive only began in 2023 under the IRA rules.
2022 is the first model year of an all-new generation on BMW's fifth-generation eDrive platform. The facelift does not arrive until 2026, so buyers got a brand-new design with years of runway.
Critics widely praised the 2022 iX for its quiet, comfortable ride, strong acceleration, real-world range and standout interior, while criticizing the styling. It was well reviewed but not a consistent comparison-test winner over the Model X or EQS SUV.
