The verdict
A mixed-report mid-size luxury suv, strong on technology and held back by ownership.
The 2023 BMW iX is one of the quietest, quickest and most beautifully finished electric SUVs of its era: 516 hp, a 4.4-second 0-60 run, up to 324 miles of EPA range and a cabin reviewers rank among the best in the luxury class. The catch is money. It starts at $85,095, typically sells near $90,000, and keeps only about 38% of its value after five years. Early-production recalls and an owner-reported reliability record that Consumer Reports rates well below average also count against it. Buy it for comfort and refinement, ideally used or on a heavily discounted lease, rather than as a long-term value play.
Jump to scoresStrengths

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the iX's strongest categories.3.19B
The 2023 iX is a carry-over year of the first generation (launched MY2022; refresh not until MY2026). The volume xDrive50 makes 516 hp from its dual-motor setup.
564 lb-ft from the two electrically excited synchronous motors, above the SUV band ceiling.
BMW's 0–60 claim for the xDrive50; Car and Driver's instrumented testing of the xDrive50 beat the claim.
Dual-motor delivery is instant, silent and linear, with well-judged adaptive regen; reviewers single out the iX's refinement as class-leading.
Single-speed reduction gear per axle — no shifts, hunting or drone; B-mode one-pedal driving is predictable.
BMW rates the iX at 5,500 lbs with the factory hitch, competitive among luxury EV SUVs; some secondhand sources quote a lower US figure.
Every 2023 iX is dual-motor xDrive AWD with fast-acting electric torque distribution; no low range.
Pavement-focused luxury EV: no off-road trim, skid plates, lockers or terrain program; optional air suspension adds some clearance only.
EV-only with two performance tiers (xDrive50, M60); no gas, hybrid or PHEV in the iX line.
2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.49C+
EPA combined rating for the xDrive50 on standard 20-inch wheels; larger wheels and the M60 cost efficiency.
EPA city rating for the volume xDrive50 configuration.
EPA highway rating for the volume xDrive50 configuration.
EPA range from the 105.2 kWh (gross) pack is strong for a luxury mid-size EV SUV in 2023.
BMW's quoted peak DC rate for the xDrive50; mid-pack versus 800V rivals.
Manufacturer-quoted 10–80% time; slower than 800V EVs but average for 400V luxury SUVs.
EPA annual energy cost at 15,000 mi/yr.
Charges on standard Level 2 (11 kW onboard AC, ~12 h full charge on 240V) and CCS DC; cheap to keep charged at home, with no fuel-grade concern.
3SafetyOne of the iX's weakest categories.1.93C-
NHTSA never crash-tested the 2023 iX (second year of the first generation), so it has no overall, frontal, side or rollover stars. Per the framework convention 0 marks a vehicle NHTSA never rated — the absence of a result, not a zero-star outcome.
IIHS published no crashworthiness results for the 2023 iX, and it is on no Top Safety Pick list. The data that does exist is good: Euro NCAP gave it five stars in 2021 with 91% adult-occupant protection. Without US results, that puts it at unverified but credible, not a strong score.
Every 2023 iX gets the standard Active Driving Assistant: forward collision warning with AEB and pedestrian/cyclist detection, lane departure warning, blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert and speed-limit info. Adaptive cruise and active lane keeping are not standard, though; base cars get only Dynamic Cruise Control. That is a real gap on an $84,000+ luxury EV.
Standard camera-and-radar AEB with City Collision Mitigation and pedestrian/cyclist detection. The same BMW system earned Superior ratings on IIHS-tested models such as the X3 and X1. IIHS never ran front-crash-prevention tests on the iX itself, so day and night pedestrian performance is unverified.
Blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every iX. Steering intervention for blind spots (side collision avoidance) and the fuller front/rear cross-traffic coverage come with the optional Driving Assistance Professional Package.
Only lane departure warning is standard. Active Lane Keeping Assistant (lane centering) requires the Driving Assistance Professional Package. When it is fitted, reviewers describe BMW's centering as smooth with no ping-ponging, but the warning-only base spec holds the score down.
With the optional package, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Traffic Jam Assistant is a refined full-speed-range system. Base cars get only Dynamic Cruise Control, which brakes on descents but does not track traffic. That gap is unusual for a luxury EV at this price.
Hands-free driving on the 2023 iX is limited to the Driving Assistance Professional Package's Extended Traffic Jam Assistant: hands-off at up to about 40 mph on limited-access highways, with driver-attention monitoring. BMW's 85 mph Highway Assistant reached the US that year on the 7 Series/i7, not the 2023 iX, so the iX's capability trailed Super Cruise and BlueCruise.
Every iX has LED headlights with automatic high-beam assist, and slim adaptive LED units are standard. IIHS published no headlight rating for the 2023 iX, so beam quality is inferred from the hardware and from BMW's tested models rather than measured.
A tall seating position and big side glass give a good forward and side view. The thick D-pillars and small rear window leave rear-quarter blind zones. A backup camera and parking sensors are standard, but Surround View with 3D View is package content on the 2023 car.
There are two lower LATCH anchor sets at the outboard rear seats and top tethers at all three positions. The flat EV floor with no tunnel and the wide rear doors make loading a seat easy. Fitting three seats across is tight for larger seats, and the anchors sit behind covers.
4Space & ComfortOne of the iX's weakest categories.1.93C-
The 2023 iX (first generation, carry-over year) is a two-row, five-seat SUV in both the xDrive50 and M60.
Upright greenhouse and flat EV floor give generous front headroom even with the standard panoramic glass roof.
Published front legroom is at the bottom of the SUV band, though reviewers rarely flag the front as cramped thanks to the open, console-free footwell.
Squared-off roofline and flat floor give excellent second-row headroom.
Rear legroom is generous for a two-row mid-size SUV, and the flat floor (no transmission tunnel) makes the middle seat usable.
There is no third row on any 2023 iX; scored at the floor of the rubric for a two-row SUV.
About average for a two-row luxury SUV; the sloped tailgate trims usable height, and there is no front trunk.
Solid fold-flat capacity for a five-seat luxury EV, mid-pack against the SUV band.
The floating 'furniture-style' center console leaves an open shelf beneath, with wireless charging tray and decent door bins, but there is no usable frunk and no onboard AC power.
Front seats are widely praised for long-distance support with available multifunction/massage seats; the rear bench is well shaped for two adults.
Adaptive dampers on the xDrive50 and optional two-axle air suspension (standard on M60) produce a plush, well-controlled ride; large 21–22 in wheels add some sharpness over impacts.
Acoustic glazing, heavy insulation and a silent drivetrain make the iX one of the quietest SUVs at highway speed.
Four-zone climate, heated front seats and heated wheel are standard, with electrochromic panoramic roof; ventilated/massage seats and heated rear seats are package options. Remote preconditioning via My BMW app.
5Cost of OwnershipThe iX's lowest-graded category.0.00F
For 2023, the iX's second model year, the line-up starts at the xDrive50. The new M60 joins as the performance flagship. The entry price sits well above the SUV band's $65K ceiling.
The xDrive50 is the volume trim. It is usually sold with a few option packages, so it typically transacts in the high $80Ks to about $90K at sticker.
With no oil changes, brakes spared by regen, and the first 3 years/36K miles of scheduled service covered by BMW Ultimate Care, out-of-pocket costs stay low for a luxury SUV. Tires and post-warranty BMW labor rates are the main costs.
Luxury EVs have depreciated steeply, and the iX is no exception. The 2023 model lost roughly a third of its value within three years and is projected to keep under 40% after five.
BMW's standard US new-vehicle limited warranty is 4 years/50,000 miles, slightly better than the 3/36 mainstream norm.
For an EV the meaningful powertrain coverage is the high-voltage battery warranty of 8 years/100,000 miles. Other drive components fall under the 4/50 warranty.
Buyers of the 2023 iX get 3 years/36K miles of scheduled maintenance through BMW Ultimate Care and 4 years of unlimited-mile roadside assistance. They also get two years of free 30-minute DC fast-charging sessions (plus 60-minute Level 2 sessions) at Electrify America. That is multi-year included maintenance plus meaningful charging perks.
$90,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (38% retained, or about $34,200) leaves about $55,800 in depreciation. Add the projected $3,700 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $59,500 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.22C
The two main sources disagree for the 2023 iX, the second model year of the first generation: Consumer Reports rates it much less reliable than other 2023 vehicles, while J.D. Power's owner-reported quality score is average. Owner complaints center on infotainment/display blackouts, phone-link faults and some electric drive motor replacements.
BMW was a top-tier brand in dependability rankings in the 2023 period, placing near the top of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings and leading the German luxury brands in J.D. Power's VDS. It still trails Toyota and Lexus in pure reliability.
The 2023 iX has a heavy recall record for an early-production EV, including several high-voltage and drivetrain safety campaigns: a faulty combined charging unit that can cut drive power, improperly assembled HV battery cell modules, a cruise control fault causing sudden acceleration, and a defective final-drive weld seam (M60). Some are OTA fixes, but the pattern is systemic, not minor.
BMW's fifth-generation eDrive motors (no rare-earth magnets) and the 111.5 kWh pack show no widespread battery degradation, but 2023 cars are early production and saw drive-motor replacements and recalls on HV battery modules and the charging unit. That makes this a newer powertrain with real red flags in its first years.
Reviewers consistently rank the iX cabin among the best in the luxury segment. It uses unusual premium materials such as olive-leaf-tanned leather, microfiber/wool blends, open-pore wood and optional crystal controls. Its materials lead the class rather than just matching rivals.
Assembly at Dingolfing is generally tight with consistent panel gaps. Reviewers note tinny-feeling door hardware, and early-production software and electrical gremlins weigh on initial quality. BMW's brand IQS was around the industry average in this period.
BMW's US network of about 340-350 dealers covers metros and interstates well but has thinner rural presence. In 2023 EV-specific training and tooling were still rolling out at some stores, so service quality was inconsistent. J.D. Power rates the dealership experience as Great.
As a low-volume luxury EV with proprietary drive units, battery modules and carbon-reinforced body structure, the iX has high repair costs. HV and drive-unit work is dealer-only, and aftermarket support is thin. Routine maintenance is light, and the 8-year/100k-mile HV battery warranty offsets some of the risk.
7Technology & InfotainmentThe iX's best-graded category.3.66A-
Standard BMW Curved Display pairs a 14.9 in touchscreen with the 12.3 in cluster on every 2023 iX.
iDrive 8 is fast and graphically rich and keeps the rotary controller, but moved climate controls into the touchscreen and buries functions in menus, a common reviewer complaint.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every iX with iDrive 8.
BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant handles natural-language requests and the standard cloud-based Maps include EV route planning with charger preconditioning.
Harman Kardon surround is the step-up system and a Bowers & Wilkins Diamond system with 30 speakers is optional, one of the best in the segment.
A 12.3 in fully digital, configurable cluster is standard, integrated in the curved display.
BMW Remote Software Upgrade delivers whole-vehicle OTA updates, including drivetrain and assistance functions, alongside maps updates.
My BMW app covers lock/unlock, locate, remote preconditioning and charging control; BMW Digital Key Plus (UWB) phone-as-key is supported. Some features move to subscription after trial periods.
USB-C ports front and rear and a wireless charging tray are provided, but there is no household AC outlet or vehicle-to-load capability.
Comfort Access proximity entry, push-button start, power liftgate and Digital Key Plus phone-as-key make for complete keyless convenience.
Surround View with 3D View is standard along with automated parking (Parking Assistant Plus, hands-free parking) per spec listings.
A large full-color HUD is available on the xDrive50 (part of a widely ordered package) and fitted to the M60; listings for the volume trim show it.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.17C
Large rear doors, a flat rear floor and 38.9 in of rear legroom make car-seat duty easy, but only two rows and 35.5 cu ft behind the seats limit bigger families.
Automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane departure and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on the base xDrive50; the more advanced Driving Assistant Professional costs extra.
Four-zone climate, quiet cabin and roomy rear seats make long trips pleasant; luggage space with all seats occupied is merely average.
Silent, smooth EV drive with adaptive regen and B-mode one-pedal driving, an excellent ride and standard parking automation make it an effortless daily driver.
Home charging makes per-mile energy cost low relative to gas luxury SUVs, though the heavy iX is less efficient than smaller EVs and wears expensive tires.
Standard 3D surround view and hands-free parking assist offset a broad body and a ~42 ft turning circle.
Optional hitch allows moderate towing, but range drops sharply under load and the luxury cabin and modest cargo hold are not suited to work duty.
A luxury-focused EV with delicate cabin materials (open-pore wood, crystal controls) and no fleet or hard-use track record.
No AC power outlets or vehicle-to-load, minimal tie-downs beyond cargo hooks, and no upfit ecosystem.
Superb highway quietness, seats and ride plus up to 324 mi EPA range and 195 kW DC charging make it a strong tourer; Driving Assistant Professional is optional.
Standard dual-motor AWD, available air suspension and a tow hitch handle gravel roads and bike racks, but there is no off-road hardware or camp power.
40/20/40-style folding rear seats open 77.9 cu ft and a hitch is available, but there is no frunk and no standard roof rails.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the iX's strongest categories.2.77B-
Low battery mass and optional integral active steering keep the ~5,700 lb iX composed and secure, but it prioritizes comfort over agility.
Accurate and well weighted but largely devoid of feedback; the hexagonal wheel takes some acclimatization.
Regen-to-friction blending is smooth and adaptive recuperation is well judged, though pedal feel is somewhat synthetic for a car this heavy.
Dual electrically excited motors deliver instant, linear and seamless thrust (516 hp in the xDrive50) with no driveline shunt.
Near-silent motors with optional Hans Zimmer IconicSounds; no intrusive whine or vibration.
A large turning circle for its footprint; integral active steering (rear-wheel steer) is optional and tightens it.
Commanding, highly adjustable seating and the open floor are excellent, but touchscreen climate controls and the hexagonal wheel add some ergonomic friction.
Strong, effortless acceleration is entertaining, but the iX is tuned as a serene luxury cruiser rather than a driver's SUV; the M60 adds more punch.

The xDrive50 comes well equipped as standard: dual-motor AWD, the curved 14.9-inch/12.3-inch display, head-up display, heated seats and steering wheel, and an electrochromic glass roof. Still, desirable features such as Driving Assistance Pro, the Bowers & Wilkins audio and massage seats are in paid packages, which is typical German luxury practice.
At about $85K the xDrive50 delivers 516 hp, around 300+ miles of range and a class-leading cabin. That is fair value next to the EQE SUV and the Model X, but it costs far more than the similarly roomy Cadillac Lyriq (~$60K). Because it is built in Germany it was not eligible for the federal purchase credit.
Only two trims are offered, the xDrive50 and the new M60, with a large price gap between them. Option packages give some flexibility, but there is no lower-priced entry or rear-drive version for 2023.
The iX was BMW's top-selling EV in the US in its early years and sold steadily in the luxury EV niche. It trailed the Tesla Model Y/X by a wide margin and was not a segment volume leader.
BMW is an aspirational luxury brand with a loyal following. The iX's polarizing grille and styling divided opinion, which slightly dents its halo compared with more conventional BMW SUVs.
German-built EVs could not get the purchase tax credit. BMW Financial passed the $7,500 commercial-EV credit through on leases, and dealers discounted increasingly through 2023, so meaningful deals were common.
2023 is the second model year of the first-generation iX, which launched for 2022 on BMW's fifth-generation eDrive platform. The facelift does not arrive until 2026, so 2023 buyers get a new design with years of runway.
Critics widely praise the iX for its quiet, comfortable ride, quickness, range and interior, and it earned major consumer-guide recognition. It was an Edmunds Top Rated finalist but did not win the category outright.
