The verdict
A mixed-report mid-size luxury suv, strong on technology and held back by ownership.
The 2025 BMW iX is one of the quietest, most luxurious and quickest electric SUVs you can buy. The volume xDrive50 makes 516 hp, reaches 60 mph in 4.4 seconds and has an EPA range of 309 miles, all inside a cabin reviewers rank among the best in the industry. The catch is money: it starts at $88,425, typically stickers near $93,000, and is projected to keep only about 38% of its value after five years. It has also never been crash-tested by NHTSA or IIHS. It suits buyers who lease or plan to keep it a long time, and it is a costly choice for anyone who trades in after a few years.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Library-quiet, silky powertrain
- Sports-car acceleration in a family SUV
- Big, modern screens and real over-the-air updates
What holds it back
- Very expensive, and it loses value fast
- No US crash-test ratings
- Thirsty for an EV, and only average at fast chargers

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the iX's strongest categories.3.24B+
The volume xDrive50 has dual motors making 516 hp combined, which is strong for a mid-size luxury SUV. The M60 tops the 2025 range at 610 hp.
Instant electric torque of 564 lb-ft is above the top of the SUV band.
BMW quotes 4.4 s to 60 mph for the xDrive50, which is quick for a 5,700-lb luxury SUV. Instrumented tests come in at or below that figure.
Reviewers consistently praise the iX's silent, seamless and immediate dual-motor delivery as some of the most refined in the class. Its EESM motors avoid any coarse behaviour.
A single-speed direct drive gives seamless, shiftless delivery. Selectable regen, including adaptive and B-mode one-pedal driving, is well calibrated.
A 5,500-lb rating with the factory hitch is competitive for an EV luxury SUV, though below the 7,000+ lbs of gas rivals and the Rivian R1S. Range drops sharply when towing.
Every 2025 US iX has standard dual-motor xDrive AWD with fully variable electronic torque split. There are no low-range or locker modes.
The iX is pavement-oriented, with about 8 in of ground clearance on coil springs, optional air suspension, no skid plates, no lockers and no off-road trim. AWD and the air suspension's raise mode help on gravel and snow only.
The US offers only EV powertrains in two power levels (xDrive50 and M60), both dual-motor AWD. There is no hybrid or gas option.
2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.42C+
83 MPGe combined is solid efficiency for a large, heavy luxury EV SUV.
EPA city rating for the volume configuration.
EPA highway rating for the volume configuration.
309 miles of EPA range from a 105.2-kWh (usable) pack is competitive for the segment. Larger wheels reduce it.
195 kW on a 400-V architecture is adequate but trails the 800-V Hyundai/Kia/Porsche/Lucid rivals.
BMW quotes up to 35 minutes for 10–80%, which is middling for the class. Independent tests ranged from 33 to 41 minutes.
EPA's $900 annual electricity cost is far below gas luxury SUVs.
The iX charges at home on Level 2 with an 11-kW onboard AC charger and uses the standard CCS1 public network. The 400-V charging is slower than 800-V rivals, but energy is cheap and easy to obtain.
3SafetyOne of the iX's weakest categories.1.89C-
NHTSA has never published an overall NCAP rating for the BMW iX, so the framework's 0 = never rated applies. Euro NCAP gave it 5 stars in 2021, but that is not a US rating.
IIHS has not crash-tested the iX, so there are no crashworthiness results and no award. The 2025 TSP/TSP+ list for BMW names only the X3 and X5. The score sits in the untested band. It is held at the top of that band because there are no known concerns and Euro NCAP gave it 5 stars (adult occupant 91%).
Every iX gets the standard Active Driving Assistant: frontal collision warning with AEB, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, blind-spot detection, and rear cross-traffic alert. Adaptive cruise with Stop & Go and active lane keeping are not standard on the xDrive50, though. Both come only in the $2,700 Driving Assistance Professional Package, which is unusual at this price.
IIHS has not published front crash prevention ratings for the iX. Euro NCAP rated its AEB well in car-to-car and vulnerable-road-user tests, and BMW's camera+radar AEB scores Superior/Advanced on IIHS-tested siblings such as the X5. Without a US night-pedestrian result, the score stays in the mid band.
Blind-spot detection and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim. Steering intervention and side collision avoidance come only with the Driving Assistance Professional Package, so the base car's coverage is mostly alert-based.
Lane departure warning is standard; active lane centering comes with the optional package. When fitted, BMW's centering is smooth and reviewers trust it. The base car offers only warning plus corrective lane-keep.
Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Traffic Jam Assistant are refined, full-speed-range systems that reviewers rate highly. They are optional rather than standard on the volume xDrive50 trim, which holds the score below the top band.
Highway Assistant is available with the Driving Assistance Professional Package. It allows hands-off driving up to 85 mph on limited-access highways and uses a driver-monitoring camera. It is capable, but its mapped coverage and features trail Super Cruise.
The iX comes with LED headlights and automatic high beams. IIHS has never rated its headlights, so there is no independent beam-pattern result. The score is a mid-band estimate for BMW's adaptive LED hardware.
Thick rear pillars and a small rear window create rear-quarter blind zones. A large windshield, tall seating, and the surround-view camera with 3D view help. Reviewers rate visibility as average and well compensated by the cameras.
Both outboard rear seats have lower anchors, and all three positions have top tethers. Wide rear doors and a flat EV floor make installs easy. Three seats across is tight for bulky seats.
4Space & ComfortOne of the iX's weakest categories.1.96C-
The iX is a two-row, five-passenger SUV only.
Generous front headroom from the tall EV packaging.
Published front legroom is at the low end of the SUV band, though reviewers do not report the front row as cramped.
Roomy rear headroom for a mid-size SUV.
Good rear legroom on a fully flat floor; KBB calls it adequate but slightly behind some rivals.
The iX has no third row at all, so it scores in the low band per the guidance.
KBB says this is more than most of the luxury segment, but it is modest against the fleet-wide SUV band.
Good maximum cargo volume for a two-row luxury SUV.
A floating center console with a pass-through bin underneath and a flat rear floor are useful, but there is no front trunk, which most EV rivals offer.
Wide, supportive power seats with available massage and a flat-floor rear bench are praised for long-trip comfort.
A compliant, comfort-biased ride, with available two-axle air suspension, keeps the heavy SUV composed.
Reviewers repeatedly call the iX one of the quietest cabins in the class, with a near-silent powertrain and well-suppressed wind and road noise.
Heated wheel, heated seats, four-zone climate and remote pre-conditioning are standard; ventilated and massaging seats are in packages.
5Cost of OwnershipThe iX's lowest-graded category.0.00F
2025 is a carry-over year for the first-generation iX, and the xDrive50 is still the entry trim. BMW raised its price by $150 and the destination charge by $180. The entry price is far above the SUV band's $65K ceiling.
The xDrive50 is the volume trim. Dealer stock usually carries one or two option packages, so it typically stickers in the low $90Ks, and heavily optioned cars approach $100K.
The EV drivetrain needs no oil changes, regen spares the brakes, and BMW Ultimate Care pays for the first 3 years/36K miles of scheduled service. Most of the cost is tires (21–22 in.) and BMW labor rates once the 4-year warranty ends.
Luxury EVs have depreciated steeply. A 2025 iX also faces the 2026 refresh, which brings more range, and BMW's announced end of US iX sales, so its residuals sit at the bottom of the SUV band.
BMW's standard US new-vehicle limited warranty is 4 years/50,000 miles. That is a little better than the mainstream 3/36 norm and matches luxury rivals.
For an EV the meaningful powertrain coverage is the high-voltage battery warranty of 8 years/100,000 miles. Other drive components fall under the 4/50 basic warranty.
Every new 2025 BMW includes Ultimate Care, which covers scheduled maintenance for 3 years/36K miles and transfers to later owners. Buyers also get 4 years of unlimited-mile roadside assistance, and the iX adds 2 years or 1,000 kWh of free Electrify America charging. That is multi-year included maintenance plus a meaningful charging perk.
$93,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (38% retained, or about $35,340) leaves about $57,660 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $61,660 in total.
6Reliability & QualityGrades above the middle of the scale.2.73B-
The two main sources disagree. J.D. Power rates the 2025 iX 'Average' (78/100), but Consumer Reports says it is less reliable than other 2025 models. Owners report problems mainly with electrical accessories and the 12V system, not the drivetrain.
In dependability studies BMW is consistently one of the stronger luxury brands, ranking near the top of the luxury group in recent J.D. Power VDS results. Its initial quality has slipped, though: the 2025 J.D. Power IQS put BMW below the industry average, and Lexus, Toyota and Subaru still rank above it on long-term dependability.
NHTSA lists one recall for the 2025 model year, far fewer than the earlier years of this generation had. That recall is serious, though: improperly assembled HV battery modules can cause loss of drive power or a fire. It affects only 136 vehicles across the iX, i7 and i4. The generation as a whole has a pattern of HV battery and propulsion-software campaigns.
The 2025 iX is the fourth and final pre-facelift model year on BMW's Gen5 eDrive powertrain (externally excited synchronous motors, about 105–109 kWh pack). It is a carry-over year, and BMW revised the powertrain for the facelifted 2026 model. Owners report no widespread battery degradation, but the generation has recalls on the HV battery modules and motor software, and the design has no high-mileage track record yet.
Reviewers rank the iX cabin among the best in the industry. It uses open-pore wood, wool/microfiber and olive-leaf-tanned leather, crystal-glass controls and a lounge-style layout, and its materials lead the class.
The iX is built in Dingolfing and its assembly is generally tight, though some reviewers find the doors close with a tinny sound. BMW placed below the industry average in the 2025 J.D. Power IQS, and owners report electrical glitches.
BMW has about 350 US dealers, all EV-trained and tooled since 2022, which gives good metro and interstate coverage but a thinner rural presence. The iX had the highest overall score in J.D. Power's 2025 EV ownership satisfaction study, while BMW's service satisfaction is mid-pack among luxury brands.
The iX is a low-volume luxury EV with a proprietary battery, drive units and a carbon-reinforced body structure, so repairs are expensive and high-voltage work is dealer-only. Aftermarket support is thin, though routine maintenance needs are light.
7Technology & InfotainmentThe iX's best-graded category.3.73A
A large 14.9-inch center touchscreen is standard within the Curved Display.
Graphics are fast and sharp, and the iDrive rotary controller is retained, but OS 8.5 moves climate controls into the touchscreen and adds menu depth.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every iX.
The natural-language BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant and cloud-based navigation with EV charge routing are strong.
Harman Kardon surround is standard on the xDrive50; a 30-speaker Bowers & Wilkins Diamond system is available and is standard on the M60.
A standard 12.3-inch configurable digital cluster sits in the curved glass panel.
BMW Remote Software Upgrade delivers whole-vehicle OTA updates that have added features.
The My BMW app handles remote climate, charging control, lock and locate, and BMW Digital Key Plus (UWB) is available.
There are USB-C ports in both rows and wireless phone charging, but no household AC outlet.
Comfort Access, a hands-free liftgate, remote functions and phone-as-key are available.
Surround View with 3D View and Parking Assistant Plus, including reversing assist, are available; a backup camera and sensors are standard.
A full-color augmented HUD is available on the xDrive50 through a package and is standard on the M60.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.22C
A flat rear floor, wide doors and 35.5 cu ft of cargo suit families, but there is no third row and no frunk.
The Driving Assistance Professional suite became standard for 2025, but neither NHTSA nor IIHS has crash-tested the iX (Euro NCAP gave it 5 stars).
A quiet, plush cabin, four-zone climate and a roomy flat-floor rear make long trips easy for four or five.
Smooth instant torque, one-pedal driving with three regen levels and hands-off traffic assist make commuting relaxing.
Electric running costs are low against gas, but 83 MPGe is below average among EVs and the large tires are expensive.
A 195-inch footprint and a wide turning circle are partly offset by available surround view and Parking Assistant Plus; reviewers note thick pillars.
A 5,500-lb tow rating is useful, but towing sharply cuts EV range and the luxury cabin is not a work environment.
The iX is a luxury-oriented EV with delicate sustainable materials and crystal controls, and it has no fleet or work track record.
There is no onboard AC power or V2L, no frunk and minimal upfit ecosystem; tie-downs and a hitch are the extent of it.
A 309-mile EPA range, 195 kW charging, standard hands-free Highway Assistant and a hushed cabin make it a strong tourer.
Dual-motor AWD and a 5,500-lb tow rating handle gravel and bike racks, but ground clearance is limited and there is no off-road hardware or V2L for camping.
35.5/77.9 cu ft with split-folding rear seats and an available hitch is good, but there is no frunk and underfloor space is modest.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the iX's strongest categories.2.76B-
It is composed and secure for a ~5,700-lb SUV, with good grip, but the tuning favors comfort over agility.
Steering is precise and well-weighted, but numb by BMW standards, and the hexagonal wheel divides opinion.
Regen blending is smooth, with adaptive recuperation and one-pedal mode; instrumented stops are average for the weight.
The 516-hp dual-motor drive delivers seamless, effortless thrust with impeccable calibration.
The electrically excited motors are near-silent, with optional Hans Zimmer IconicSounds for character.
The turning circle is wide for the segment without the optional rear-axle steering.
It has a commanding, highly adjustable seating position, but touch-based climate controls, thick pillars and the hexagonal wheel cost points.
Quick and serene rather than playful; the M60 adds punch, but the xDrive50 is more luxury cruiser than driver's SUV.

The 2025 xDrive50 comes well equipped as standard: dual-motor AWD with 516 hp, the curved 14.9-inch/12.3-inch display, a head-up display, heated seats and steering wheel, and an electrochromic glass roof. Driving Assistance Pro, the Bowers & Wilkins audio and massage seats are still paid options, which is typical German luxury practice.
At about $88K the xDrive50 delivers 516 hp, an EPA range above 300 miles and a class-leading cabin. That is fair against the EQE SUV and the Model X, but a similarly roomy Cadillac Lyriq costs about $25K less. Because the iX is built in Germany it gets no purchase credit, although lease pass-throughs narrowed the gap in practice.
Only two trims are offered, the xDrive50 and the M60, with a roughly $24K gap between them. Option packages add some flexibility, but there is no lower-priced or rear-drive entry for 2025.
The iX is a solid seller in the luxury-EV niche, but US volume is falling year over year, and BMW has announced it will end iX sales in the US after the refreshed 2026 model.
BMW is an aspirational luxury brand with a loyal following and a record US sales year in 2024. The iX's polarizing grille and styling divided opinion, which slightly dents its halo next to conventional BMW SUVs.
The iX was not eligible for the purchase credit, but BMW Financial passed the $7,500 commercial-EV credit through on leases until the credit expired on Sept 30, 2025. Dealers also discounted 10–12% off MSRP, so large deals were routine.
2025 is the fourth and final model year of the pre-facelift first-generation iX. A facelift with more range and power arrived in January 2025 as a 2026 model, so 2025 buyers get the outgoing version, although the platform tech is still current.
Reviewers consistently praise the iX's quiet, comfortable ride, quickness, range and interior, and it earned top marks from consumer guides early in its run. By 2025 newer rivals often took the comparison-test wins, so it is well reviewed but rarely the outright pick.
