The verdict
A mixed-report mid-size luxury suv, strong on technology and held back by ownership.
The 2024 BMW iX is one of the most refined luxury EVs you can buy. It has a 516-hp dual-motor powertrain that is fast and nearly silent, a cabin with class-leading materials, and 307 miles of EPA range. The catch is cost: it starts at $88,095, it is projected to keep only about 42% of its value after five years, and BMW still charges extra for adaptive cruise and lane centering. Neither NHTSA nor IIHS has crash-tested it. It is a superb two-row luxury cruiser for buyers who lease or don't mind steep depreciation, but it is not a family hauler or a value buy.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Effortless, near-silent performance
- Quiet, plush long-distance comfort
- A cabin unlike anything else at the price
What holds it back
- Very expensive to buy and to own
- No U.S. crash-test ratings
- Key driver aids cost extra at $88K

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the iX's strongest categories.3.24B+
The 2024 iX is a carry-over year of the first generation (launched MY2022, refreshed for MY2026); the xDrive50 volume trim's dual-motor system makes 516 hp.
564 lb-ft from the dual-motor xDrive50 exceeds the SUV band ceiling.
BMW claims 4.4 s for the xDrive50; instrumented tests of the xDrive50 match or beat the claim.
Dual-motor delivery is instantaneous, near-silent and linear, with well-judged regen; among the most refined powertrains in the luxury SUV class.
Single-speed reduction gearing on each axle — no shifts to hunt or thump; B-mode one-pedal and adaptive regen are smooth and predictable.
BMW rates the iX at 5,500 lbs braked with the trailer hitch option, matching the 2,500 kg European rating; some secondary US sources list 3,500 lbs, so confidence is moderate.
Every 2024 iX is dual-motor xDrive AWD with fast electronic torque distribution; no low range.
Pavement-focused luxury EV with no off-road trim, skid plates, lockers or terrain modes; optional air suspension can raise ride height modestly.
EV-only, with two US performance tiers (xDrive50, M60) of a single powertrain type; no gas, hybrid or PHEV iX.
2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.40C+
EPA rates the 2024 iX xDrive50 at 83 MPGe combined regardless of wheel size — solid for a large luxury EV SUV.
EPA city rating for the volume xDrive50.
EPA highway rating for the volume xDrive50.
EPA lists 307 miles for the 2024 xDrive50 on every wheel size from its 111.5 kWh (gross) pack.
The xDrive50 accepts up to 195 kW on a CCS DC fast charger on its 400-volt architecture — mid-pack for its class.
BMW quotes about 35 minutes for 10–80% at peak DC power; adequate but slower than 800-volt rivals.
EPA estimated annual energy cost for the xDrive50 at standard assumptions.
Home Level 2 charging is straightforward (11 kW onboard charger, ~11 hours to full) and CCS1 DC compatibility is broad; the large pack makes Level 1 charging impractical.
3SafetyOne of the iX's weakest categories.1.66D
NHTSA has not crash-tested the iX in any model year of this generation (2022–present), so there is no Overall Vehicle Score for 2024. Zero is the framework's numeric sentinel for 'never rated', not a zero-star result; the only full crash program the iX has gone through is Euro NCAP's.
IIHS has never crash-tested the iX and it holds no Top Safety Pick award for any year (absent from the 2022, 2023 and 2024 BMW award lists, which name the X3, X5, X1 and 5 Series instead). With no US crashworthiness data but no known structural concerns and a strong Euro NCAP result for the carbon-cage aluminium spaceframe, it sits at the bottom of the 'no award' band rather than in the concern band.
Standard Active Driving Assistant covers AEB (Frontal Collision Warning with braking), Active Blind Spot Detection and Lane Departure Warning, but adaptive cruise with Stop & Go and active lane keeping require the $2,300 Driving Assistance Professional Package even on an $87,100 xDrive50 — a key gap for a luxury flagship.
AEB with pedestrian and cyclist detection is standard, but IIHS has never evaluated the iX's front crash prevention (day or night pedestrian), so performance rests on Euro NCAP's 2021 safety-assist testing and BMW's generally solid camera+radar system rather than a US rating.
Active Blind Spot Detection is standard on every 2024 iX; rear cross-traffic alert with park distance control comes with the standard parking aids, while side collision avoidance and evasion steering sit in the optional Driving Assistance Professional Package.
Only Lane Departure Warning is standard; BMW's Steering and Lane Control / Active Lane Keeping Assistant — smooth and well regarded by reviewers — needs the optional Driving Assistance Professional Package, so the volume configuration's lane assistance is functional but basic unless optioned.
When equipped, Active Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Traffic Jam Assistant are refined full-speed-range systems, but neither is standard on the 2024 iX — the score reflects strong optional hardware held back by its packaging.
2024 is the year Highway Assistant arrived in the iX's Driving Assistance Professional Package, allowing hands-free driving up to 85 mph on mapped controlled-access highways with camera driver monitoring; BMWBlog called it one of the best features of the iX M60, though it lacks automatic lane changes and trails Super Cruise in coverage.
Slim adaptive LED headlights with automatic high beams are standard and BMW Laserlight is available, but IIHS has never rated the iX's headlights, so on-road performance is unverified by a US test.
Large glass area up front, but thick C/D-pillars and a small rear window create rear-quarter blind zones; a rear camera and park distance control are standard, while the Surround View camera system needs the $2,200 Convenience Package on the xDrive50 (standard on the M60).
Two outboard rear LATCH positions plus three top tethers; the flat EV floor, wide rear doors and generous rear bench make installs straightforward, though fitting three seats across remains tight.
4Space & ComfortOne of the iX's weakest categories.1.89C-
The 2024 iX (carry-over year of the 2022-launched first generation) is a strict two-row, five-seat SUV in every trim.
Generous front headroom for a mid-size luxury SUV, helped by the flat EV floor and tall greenhouse.
Published front legroom is at the low end of the SUV band, though the open, console-less footwell makes it feel roomier than the figure suggests.
Excellent second-row headroom thanks to the upright roofline over the rear bench.
Roomy second row with a flat floor and no transmission tunnel, making the middle seat more usable than in most rivals.
The iX has no third row in any configuration, unlike three-row luxury EV rivals such as the EQS SUV, Kia EV9 or Rivian R1S.
Cargo space behind the rear seats is adequate for a two-row mid-size SUV but there is no front trunk, and the floor is relatively high.
Mid-pack maximum cargo capacity for the segment with the 40/20/40 rear seatback folded.
The floating wood-trimmed center console leaves an open storage area underneath and the flat floor helps, but there is no frunk (the hood is sealed for service) and the door pockets and console bins are modest; underfloor storage under the cargo floor is small.
Front seats are plush and supportive over long distances, with optional multi-contour massaging seats in the Premium Package; the rear bench is well shaped with good thigh support thanks to the flat floor.
Reviewers consistently praise the iX's supple, isolated ride, especially with the optional two-axle air suspension (standard on M60); the steel-spring xDrive50 is slightly firmer over sharp impacts on 21–22 in wheels.
The silent electric drivetrain, acoustic glazing and heavy insulation make the iX one of the quietest SUVs in the class at highway speed.
Heated front seats, heated steering wheel, four-zone climate control and remote pre-conditioning via the app are standard; heated rear seats, ventilated front seats and massage are optional on xDrive50 (ventilation standard on M60).
5Cost of OwnershipThe iX's lowest-graded category.0.00F
The 2024 iX is a carry-over year of the first generation (MY2022–2025, before the MY2026 LCI); the xDrive50 is the entry trim at $87,100 plus $995 destination, far above the SUV band ceiling.
The xDrive50 is the overwhelming volume trim; its base price incl. destination is used here (matching the KBB cost-to-own basis), though most units carry several thousand dollars of packages.
Despite no oil changes, BMW labor rates, large wheel/tire sets and luxury-EV repair estimates put 5-year upkeep in the upper part of the SUV band; complimentary maintenance offsets some early costs.
Luxury EVs depreciate steeply; KBB projects the 2024 iX losing about $51.5K of an $88K price over five years.
BMW's standard US new-vehicle limited warranty applies, mid-band for the segment.
The high-voltage battery and EV drive components carry 8 yr/100,000 mi coverage, the meaningful powertrain-equivalent warranty for an EV.
The 2024 iX includes 3-yr/36k-mi BMW Ultimate Care scheduled maintenance, 2 years of unlimited 30-minute Electrify America DC fast-charging sessions, and roadside assistance for the warranty period — multi-year maintenance plus a meaningful charging perk.
$88,095 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (42% retained, or about $37,000) leaves about $51,095 in depreciation. Add the projected $7,403 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $58,498 in total.
6Reliability & QualityGrades above the middle of the scale.2.76B-
Both major sources rate the 2024 iX as average: Consumer Reports says its reliability is about average for the model year, and J.D. Power gives it a Quality & Reliability score of 79/100 ('Average'). The problems owners report are mostly electrical accessories and the 12V battery, not the drivetrain.
BMW is consistently one of the most dependable luxury brands. In the 2024 J.D. Power VDS it placed ninth overall and third among luxury brands, and Consumer Reports ranks it near the top of its brand report card. Toyota, Lexus and Subaru still rank above it on pure dependability.
The 2024 iX has four NHTSA recalls. Three affect the propulsion system: a battery cell-monitoring circuit, drive-motor software that can shut down the high-voltage system, and improperly assembled battery modules that carry a risk of power loss or fire. The fourth is cruise control reactivating unexpectedly. That pattern of high-voltage system recalls is more serious than typical recall activity.
The 2024 iX is in its third year on BMW's Gen5 eDrive setup (externally excited synchronous motors, about 105–111 kWh pack). Owners have reported no widespread battery degradation. Against that, the generation has recalls on drive-motor software and the HV battery modules, and this design does not yet have a high-mileage track record.
Reviewers consistently rate the iX cabin among the best in the industry. It uses open-pore wood, wool/microfiber and olive-leaf-tanned leather upholstery, crystal-glass controls, and a hexagonal steering wheel, and its materials lead the class.
The iX is built in Dingolfing and its assembly is generally tight. Some reviewers find the door hardware tinny. BMW scored slightly worse than the industry average in the 2024 J.D. Power Initial Quality Study (206 PP100), and owners report electrical glitches.
BMW has roughly 340–350 US dealers, which gives good coverage in metro areas and along interstates but a thinner rural presence. The dealers have had EV service training and tooling since the iX launched in 2022. Service satisfaction is mid-pack among luxury brands.
The iX is a low-volume luxury EV with a proprietary battery, drive units and carbon-reinforced body structure, so it is expensive to repair and high-voltage work is dealer-only. Aftermarket support is thin compared with gas BMW SUVs. Routine maintenance needs are light.
7Technology & InfotainmentThe iX's best-graded category.3.66A-
Standard BMW Curved Display pairs a 14.9 in center touchscreen with a 12.3 in instrument panel in one glass unit on every 2024 iX.
iDrive 8 is fast, sharp and retains the rotary crystal controller, but moving climate controls into the touchscreen and deep menus draw consistent criticism.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every 2024 iX.
BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant handles natural-language commands well, and native navigation is standard with EV route planning, charger search and battery preconditioning.
Base audio is unbranded, but an 18-speaker Harman Kardon system (Convenience Package; standard M60) and the 30-speaker, 1,615-watt Bowers & Wilkins Diamond system with headrest speakers are among the best available.
A crisp, configurable 12.3 in digital cluster is standard, integrated with the touchscreen in the curved display.
BMW Remote Software Upgrades deliver whole-vehicle OTA updates to the iX, including driver-assistance and drivetrain functions, and BMW can unlock features over the air.
My BMW app offers remote climate pre-conditioning, lock/unlock, locate and charging control, and BMW Digital Key Plus (UWB) lets iPhone/Android phones work as a key.
Wireless charging with cooling is standard and there are six USB-C ports (two front, four rear), but no household AC outlet or vehicle-to-load capability.
Comfort Access proximity entry, push-button start, power liftgate and phone-as-key (Digital Key Plus) are available, with remote climate in place of remote start.
Rear camera, park distance control and Parking Assistant are standard; Surround View with 3D view and Parking Assistant Plus need the $2,200 Convenience Package on the volume xDrive50.
A large, full-color HUD is available on the xDrive50 through the widely ordered Convenience Package and is standard on the M60, but not standard on the volume trim.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.14C
Wide rear doors, a flat floor and 38.9 in of rear legroom make car-seat installs and kid loading easy, but there is no third row and 35.5 cu ft of cargo limits stroller-plus-gear days.
Standard AEB, blind-spot and lane-departure warning and a Euro NCAP 5-star result, but no NHTSA or IIHS crash ratings exist and adaptive cruise/lane centering cost extra even at $87k.
Four-zone climate, rear USB-C, plush seats, a very quiet cabin and 307 miles of range make it a refined family tourer, though luggage room for five is middling.
Smooth, silent instant torque, adaptive regen and B-mode one-pedal driving, plus a supple ride, make the iX effortless in traffic.
83 MPGe combined and an EPA $900/yr energy cost are cheap per mile versus gas luxury SUVs, though higher than smaller EVs; pricey tires add consumable cost.
X5-sized footprint with thick rear pillars and a ~41–43 ft turning circle; standard parking sensors and Parking Assistant help, but surround view costs extra on the xDrive50.
A 5,500-lb tow rating with the optional hitch is respectable on paper, but towing slashes EV range and the luxury cargo area isn't built for work loads.
A luxury EV with delicate open-pore wood, crystal controls and light upholstery; no fleet or hard-use reputation.
No onboard AC power or vehicle-to-load, no upfit ecosystem; cargo tie-down hooks and an optional hitch are the only work provisions.
Superb seat comfort and quietness with 307 miles of EPA range; available Highway Assistant hands-free driving is a fatigue reducer, though 195 kW peak charging is slower than 800-volt rivals.
Standard dual-motor AWD, ~8 in clearance (adjustable with optional air suspension) and a tow hitch handle gravel roads and bike racks, but there are no off-road modes, no factory roof rails and no V2L for camping.
40/20/40 split-folding rear seats open 77.9 cu ft and a hitch is available, but no frunk, no standard roof rails and modest underfloor space limit bulky-gear hauling.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the iX's strongest categories.2.83B-
A low battery-floor center of gravity and optional Integral Active Steering keep the roughly 5,700-lb iX composed and surprisingly agile, but it prioritizes comfort over the sharpness of an X5 M50i.
Steering is precise and well weighted in Sport mode but light and filtered in normal driving; the hexagonal wheel takes some acclimatization.
Strong stops for its mass and well-blended adaptive regeneration; pedal feel is good for an EV, though the weight shows in repeated hard stops.
Dual-motor 516-hp delivery is instant, linear and seamless with no transitions to manage; among the most refined powertrains in the class.
Motors are near-silent with no perceptible vibration; optional Hans Zimmer-composed IconicSounds add synthetic character in Sport mode.
US-published turning diameter is wide for the segment; BMW's European curb-to-curb figure is tighter, and optional Integral Active Steering reduces it.
Commanding, highly adjustable seating and a power-adjustable wheel, good forward sightlines and easy ingress; touch-only climate controls and thick rear pillars are the drawbacks.
A 4.4-s 0–60 sprint and composed chassis make it entertaining for a luxury EV SUV, but its comfort bias and weight keep it a refined cruiser rather than an enthusiast pick (M60 is sharper).
10Value & Market PositionGrades above the middle of the scale.2.73B-
The xDrive50 comes well equipped (curved iDrive 8 display, panoramic glass roof, heated seats/steering wheel, Harman Kardon audio, navigation, broad ADAS), but at $88K BMW still charges extra for Driving Assistant Professional, Bowers & Wilkins audio, massage seats and air suspension.
Strong range (~300+ mi EPA), 516 hp and a superb cabin justify much of the price, but an $88K entry point is steep against the Cadillac Lyriq (~$60K) and Kia EV9/Genesis GV70 Electrified for similar space and tech.
Only two US trims — xDrive50 and M60 — with a $24K gap between them, both dual-motor AWD EVs; flexibility comes from option packages rather than a trim ladder.
The iX was BMW's best-selling US EV through 2023–2024 and a solid luxury-EV performer, but sold in the low tens of thousands, trailing the Tesla Model Y/X and Cadillac Lyriq.
BMW is an aspirational luxury brand with deep loyalty; the iX is its EV technology flagship, though its polarizing styling dents the halo somewhat.
In 2024 BMW passed the $7,500 federal commercial-clean-vehicle credit through on iX leases and stacked it with lease cash and dealer discounts, producing some of the deepest luxury-EV lease deals of the year.
MY2024 is the third year of a generation launched for 2022, with the LCI refresh (more range, power and charging speed) arriving for MY2026 — current tech but a buyer faced near-term refresh risk.
Widely praised for interior design, refinement, ride and real-world range, and regularly ranked near the top of luxury EV SUV reviews, though the styling draws persistent criticism; not a consistent comparison-test winner.
