The verdict
A struggling full-size suv, strong on space and held back by efficiency.
The 2019 Tahoe was America's best-selling full-size SUV. It has a smooth V8, can tow up to 8,600 lbs, and seats up to nine in a quiet, roomy cabin with huge front and second rows. The downsides are the cost of feeding a 17 MPG V8, a knees-up third row over a solid rear axle, and safety tech that was thin and mostly optional. It was also the next-to-last year of a design replaced for 2021. It suits buyers who tow and haul, and it suits families less well if they need all three rows every day.
Jump to scoresStrengths

What holds it back
- Expensive to fuel
- High running costs and bare-minimum warranty

The communications gateway module incorrectly processes a loss of communication with the sensing diagnostic module (SDM), causing the air bag malfunction indicator light to inconsistently illuminate.
Risk
The air bag malfunction indicator light may fail to warn the driver of a problem with the air bag, increasing the risk of injury.
Remedy
The communications gateway module software will be updated by a dealer, or through an over-the-air (OTA) update, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on July 1, 2021. Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the Tahoe's strongest categories.2.32C+
2019 is a carry-over year in the fourth-generation (2015–2020) Tahoe; the only changes were minor (a new paint color and the LS-based Custom/Custom Midnight editions). The volume LS/LT/Custom run the 355 hp 5.3L L83 V8, and the 420 hp 6.2L L86 is limited to Premier and the RST Performance Package.
The 5.3L peaks at 383 lb-ft at 4,100 rpm, adequate for a ~5,350 lb body-on-frame SUV but delivered fairly high in the rev range. The 6.2L's 460 lb-ft is reserved for Premier and the RST Performance Package.
Instrumented tests of the 5.3L fourth-generation Tahoe fall between 6.7 and 7.1 s, so ~7.0 s is used for the volume configuration. The 6.2L RST Performance Package ran 5.7 s.
The naturally aspirated direct-injection small-block responds immediately with no turbo lag and pulls cleanly from low rpm. It stays below the top tier because Active Fuel Management's V8-to-V4 transitions can be heard and sometimes felt at light throttle, and the 5.3L sounds busy when pushed hard.
The volume 5.3L keeps GM's 6L80 six-speed automatic, which is smooth but slow to kick down because of its wide ratios. The 10L80 10-speed is paired only with the 6.2L (Premier/RST Performance Package).
Properly equipped (2WD 5.3L with the Max Trailering Package), the 2019 Tahoe is rated at 8,600 lbs. That is above the 8,000 lb SUV band ceiling, so the item scores 100.
Four-wheel drive is offered across the 2019 range (LS/Custom, LT, RST, Premier) through a two-speed transfer case with low range and an available Autotrac automatic mode. It falls short of the top tier because no locking differential or torque-vectoring axle is offered.
The LT Z71 package gives the Tahoe real light-duty off-road ability: off-road suspension, all-terrain tires, skid plates, hill descent control and a two-speed transfer case. With ~8 in of clearance, no locker and Z71 offered as a package rather than a dedicated trim, it stays mid-band.
The 2019 Tahoe offers two naturally aspirated gas V8s from the same family, plus an E85 flex-fuel version of the 5.3L. There is no diesel, hybrid or electrified option.
2Efficiency & RangeThe Tahoe's lowest-graded category.0.00F
EPA rates the volume 5.3L 4WD Tahoe at 17 MPG combined, near the floor of the gas-SUV band. Its only efficiency aid is cylinder deactivation; it has no stop/start and just six gears.
City driving is the weakest case: 15 MPG for the volume 5.3L, one point above the band floor. With no automatic stop/start, the V8 idles at every stop.
The 4WD 5.3L manages only 21 MPG on the highway, one point above the band floor. The 10-speed 6.2L actually beats it there.
The 26-gallon tank and 17 MPG combined give the volume 4WD Tahoe about 442 miles per tank, near the middle of the band.
On EPA's current fuel-price basis, the volume 4WD 5.3L costs more to fuel than the top of the SUV cost band, even on regular. The premium-fuel 6.2L adds about $900 a year.
The volume 5.3L V8 runs on 87-octane regular and is available in E85 flex-fuel form. Requirements are mixed only because the 6.2L (Premier/RST Performance Package) calls for premium.
3SafetyOne of the Tahoe's weakest categories.0.83F
NHTSA rated the 2019 Tahoe 4 stars overall in both RWD and 4WD form. Side impact earned 5 stars, but frontal is 4 and rollover is 3 (22.8% RWD / 21.9% 4WD rollover risk), which is typical of a tall body-on-frame SUV.
IIHS published no crashworthiness results for the 2019 Tahoe (2015–2020 fourth generation): no small-overlap, moderate-overlap, side or roof-strength rating, and no Top Safety Pick award. None of its crash protection is independently confirmed beyond NHTSA's 4-star result.
On the base LS, forward collision alert, low-speed AEB, lane keep assist, blind-spot and rear cross-traffic alert are optional through the Enhanced Driver Alert Package. That content is standard from the volume LT. Adaptive cruise with high-speed emergency braking is a Premier-only option, so much of the suite sits on upper trims.
The AEB that comes with Enhanced Driver Alert or the LT is a low-speed system with no pedestrian detection. Full-speed braking comes only with the Premier's optional adaptive cruise. IIHS did not test the autobrake and confirmed only that the forward collision warning meets requirements.
Side Blind Zone Alert with Lane Change Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert are optional on LS and standard on upper trims. They only warn, with no active braking or steering and no trailer-length-aware coverage.
Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning gives a corrective nudge at the lane edge. It comes with Enhanced Driver Alert and is standard from LT. No 2019 trim offered lane centering.
Adaptive cruise was optional only on the top Premier trim. The volume LS and LT trims used conventional cruise, and no trim had integrated highway-assist steering.
The 2019 Tahoe offered no hands-free driving. Super Cruise didn't reach the Tahoe until the 2023 model year of the next generation.
Lower trims use halogen projector headlamps and upper trims get HID/LED. IntelliBeam auto high beams come with the Enhanced Driver Alert content. IIHS published no headlight rating for the 2019 Tahoe, so the score rests on the hardware alone.
The high seating position and upright glass give a good forward view, but thick rear pillars and the sheer length leave big blind zones. The rear camera is standard; Surround Vision and the Rear Camera Mirror are limited to the top trims.
IIHS rated the LATCH hardware Acceptable. There are three full LATCH positions and three tether-only positions, with every tether anchor reachable with the seatback in position. The roomy second row and wide rear doors make installation practical.
4Space & ComfortThe Tahoe's best-graded category.2.80B-
The volume LT with the 60/40 second-row bench seats eight; captain's chairs drop it to seven and the LS front bench option raises it to nine.
Generous front headroom, at the top of the SUV band.
Front legroom is class-leading.
Second-row headroom is good for adults.
The second row is roomy, although the longer-wheelbase Suburban has more.
The solid rear axle raises the cargo floor, so the third row is a knees-up, kids-only space with little cargo room behind it.
Middling space behind the second row for a full-size SUV, because the third row folds onto a raised floor.
Large maximum cargo hold, though short of the Suburban and the independent-rear-suspension Expedition.
There is a large center console and a standard household outlet, but the third row folds onto a raised, stepped load floor with no underfloor storage.
The first two rows are roomy and comfortable and the LT has 10-way power heated front seats, but the low, knees-up third row pulls the score down.
The solid rear axle absorbs big hits but lets small ripples and broken pavement into the cabin. Rivals with independent rear suspension ride better.
The cabin is notably quiet for a body-on-frame SUV, helped by acoustic laminated glass and inlaid doors.
Tri-zone automatic climate and remote start are standard and the LT has heated front seats. Ventilated seats, heated second-row seats and a heated wheel are Premier/Premier Plus items.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Tahoe's weakest categories.0.19F
The 2019 Tahoe, the fifth year of the fourth generation, opened with the LS 2WD at $48,000 before destination, about $500 more than the 2018.
LT 4WD is the volume configuration: $56,000 + $1,295 destination = $57,295. Common packages (Luxury, Z71, RST, 20-in wheels) put a typically equipped example around $60–61K.
The 2019 shares its 5.3L V8, 6-speed automatic and running gear with the 2020, so its ownership-cost profile is the same: cheap shared parts with Silverado and Suburban, offset by big-SUV consumables and AFM lifter exposure. Estimates vary widely, so the midpoint is used.
The Tahoe won KBB's Best Resale Value award for full-size SUVs for 2018 and 2019, so its retention is at the top of its class. Even so, about half of a $60K MSRP is gone after 5 years.
GM's standard 3/36 basic coverage is the segment floor, the same as the Expedition and Yukon.
Standard GM 5/60 powertrain coverage, the bottom of the band.
Chevrolet Complete Care for MY2019 covered one complimentary maintenance visit in the first year, plus 5yr/60k roadside assistance and courtesy transportation and OnStar/4G LTE Wi-Fi trials. These are basic perks only, well short of multi-year included maintenance.
$60,500 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (52% retained, or about $31,460) leaves about $29,040 in depreciation. Add the projected $7,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $36,040 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.84C-
The sources disagree. J.D. Power rates the 2019 Tahoe only 'Average' (78/100), below the 2020's 83, yet the Tahoe won the Large SUV segment in J.D. Power's 2019 Initial Quality Study. Consumer Reports' owner-survey data calls it less reliable than other 2019 vehicles. 2019 is a carry-over year late in the 2015–2020 fourth generation, and the generation's known AFM lifter and electronics issues apply to it. With mixed signals and a weaker J.D. Power reading than 2020, it lands in the lower part of the middle band.
In this period Chevrolet sat in the bottom half of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings. In J.D. Power's 2019 IQS it beat the industry average (85 vs 93 PP100). That is lower mid-pack, the same standing applied to the 2020 Tahoe and Suburban.
NHTSA's feed lists two campaigns covering the 2019 Tahoe. The main one (about 653k units across 2015–2020 GM trucks and SUVs) is EBCM software that could trigger driveline protection if a wheel-speed sensor failed, limited to 5.3L 4WD with a 3.08 axle and fixed by a reflash. The other is a 66-unit transfer-case campaign. Neither is systemic, but the generation also carries long-running AFM lifter and transmission bulletins. That is typical activity.
The volume 5.3L L83 V8 belongs to a small-block family with a long high-mileage record, and it is paired with the mature 6L80 six-speed automatic. The 6.2L/10-speed was confined to the Premier Plus/RST package. However, Active Fuel Management lifter failures and the oil consumption linked to AFM are a widely reported weak point of the L83 in this generation, so the score lands in the mixed-history middle band.
The fourth-generation cabin has stitched soft-touch dash trim on LT and above, and it looked upscale for its class when it launched. By 2019 it trailed the redesigned 2018 Expedition. The volume LT keeps hard plastics in lower areas and uses an 8-inch MyLink screen. It is competitive, but not class-leading.
The 2019 Tahoe was built in Arlington, Texas on a mature assembly line, and it topped its segment in J.D. Power's 2019 Initial Quality Study, which is direct evidence of consistent early assembly. Electronics and trim complaints are scattered rather than systemic.
Chevrolet's roughly 3,000 US dealers are one of the two largest networks in the country, giving dense coverage that includes the rural markets where the Tahoe sells heavily. Brand-level service satisfaction was around the mass-market average.
The Tahoe shares the K2 platform, 5.3L V8 and 6L80 with the Silverado, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade. Parts are therefore cheap and abundant, and the aftermarket is huge. Repair costs for full-size SUVs run above the all-vehicle mean, and AFM lifter jobs are expensive, so the score sits in the normal band.
7Technology & InfotainmentGrades below the middle of the scale.1.13D
An 8-inch screen across the line was competitive in 2019 but is small on the band.
Chevrolet MyLink was simple, quick and backed by physical climate and audio controls, but its graphics and features were dated against 2019 rivals.
Wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard; wireless projection is not offered.
Built-in navigation is optional below Premier, and the voice control is basic, so most owners use phone projection instead.
The base system is a six-speaker setup, but a nine-speaker Bose is standard on the volume LT and a 10-speaker Bose surround system comes on the Premier.
The analog gauges come with a small driver information display, and an 8-inch color reconfigurable DIC is limited to Premier and Premier Plus.
No documented over-the-air vehicle software updates. GM's OTA-capable Vehicle Intelligence Platform arrived with the 2021 redesign.
The myChevrolet app covers remote start, lock/unlock and vehicle locate, but these depend on an OnStar plan after the trial and there is no phone-as-key.
There are USB ports across rows and a standard household outlet, but wireless charging is optional or Premier-only and the ports are USB-A of that era.
Remote start is standard, but proximity entry and push-button start are optional below Premier and the hands-free liftgate is a top-trim item.
A rear camera is standard and the LT adds rear park assist. Surround Vision and the Rear Camera Mirror are limited to the top trims.
A head-up display exists only at the very top of the range (Premier Plus / Premier options), not on the volume LT.

Big doors and a roomy second row make car seats easy, but the cramped third row and only 15.3 cu ft behind it limit stroller-plus-kids duty.
NHTSA rates it four stars overall with a three-star rollover, IIHS never crash-tested it, and its automatic braking was limited and optional.
Good front and second-row comfort, tri-zone climate and an available rear entertainment system, but third-row riders and luggage space suffer when all seats are full.
It is easy to see out of and smooth at low speed, but the light, slow steering, the jiggly solid-axle ride and its sheer bulk make daily traffic hard work.
At 17 MPG combined, commuting in it is expensive.
At 204 inches long and 80.5 inches wide with a 39-foot turning circle, it is a handful in the city. Front sensors and Surround Vision are top-trim only.
Rated to tow up to 8,600 lbs on a body-on-frame chassis with a V8, which makes it a credible tow vehicle with plenty of cargo volume.
Its fleet and police use (Tahoe PPV) prove the chassis, but reliability is only average and the 5.3L AFM lifter issue is well documented.
A standard trailering hitch and 7-pin connector, a household outlet and a deep police/fleet upfit ecosystem, but it is an SUV with no bed.
It is quiet and comfortable up front with a roughly 440-mile range, but the ride is busy on poor roads and adaptive cruise is limited to the top trim.
4WD is available on every trim, and the Z71 package adds a two-speed transfer case, skid plates and all-terrain tires. Strong towing covers boats and campers, but its size limits trail use.
The cargo hold is large with the seats folded and a hitch is standard, but the raised third-row floor wastes height and leaves little room with all rows up.

It is secure but truck-like: mid-corner bumps upset the solid-axle rear. Magnetic Ride Control on the upper trims helps.
The steering is light, slow and short on road feel.
The brakes are strong and stable for a 5,500-lb SUV, though stopping distances are long in absolute terms.
The 5.3L V8 is smooth and its cylinder deactivation is mostly seamless, but the volume trim's six-speed is dated. Only the 6.2L gets the 10-speed.
The V8 sound is pleasant and muted, but the generation's well-documented "Chevy Shake" highway vibration complaints drag on refinement.
A 39-foot turning circle is wide but typical of the full-size class.
The driving position is commanding with logical physical controls, and power-adjustable pedals and a telescoping wheel are on the LT and up. The high step-in needs the available assist steps.
The V8 has character, and the RST 6.2L Performance Package reaches 60 mph in 5.7 s, but the volume 5.3L LT feels appliance-like and truck-based.

The LS came with the 355 hp 5.3L V8, three rows, an 8-in MyLink touchscreen with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, 4G LTE Wi-Fi and a rear camera, but cloth seats. Active safety (forward collision alert, AEB, lane keep) was optional on LT and standard only on Premier, which is sparse next to a 2019 Expedition XLT at similar money.
Strong V8 towing capability, class-best resale and deep incentives earn fair value. But the solid rear axle, cramped third row and small cargo area behind it give less space per dollar than the redesigned Expedition.
Three trims (LS, LT, Premier) with 2WD/4WD and a deep package menu: Custom, Z71, RST, RST Performance (6.2L/10-speed), Midnight, Texas, and the new Premier Plus Edition. The range spans about $49K to $78K+, though there is no true budget work trim and the 6.2L is gated to RST Performance/Premier Plus.
In 2019 the Tahoe was America's best-selling full-size SUV, ahead of the Expedition and Suburban, and GM held a majority share of the segment.
The Tahoe nameplate has a loyal, durable following and a strong resale halo, though Chevrolet itself is a mainstream rather than aspirational brand.
The 2019 Tahoe carried substantial cash, percent-off-MSRP and GM Financial offers through the model year, reaching about $9,300 off by late summer. These were meaningful buyer savings on a sales leader rather than desperation pricing.
2019 was the fifth model year of the fourth generation (2015–2020), with no major refresh beyond package additions. The all-new 2021 fifth generation with independent rear suspension was revealed in December 2019, so 2019 buyers got an aging design one year from replacement.
Reviewers praised the V8, towing and quiet cabin but ranked the Tahoe behind the redesigned 2018+ Expedition for space, ride and tech. Its notable 2019 honor was KBB's Best Resale Value award, not a comparison-test win.
