The verdict

A struggling full-size suv, strong on space and held back by efficiency.

The 2020 Tahoe is the last year of a generation that began in 2015, and it shows its age. It has a proven 355 hp V8, can tow up to 8,600 lbs, has big front seats and a quiet cabin, and a huge Chevy dealer and parts network stands behind it. Against that, it gets just 17 MPG combined, its third row is cramped with 24.8 in of legroom, its safety tech is thin unless you buy the top Premier, and it has an 8-inch screen with wired-only CarPlay. Buy one as a used tow vehicle and four- or five-seat road-tripper, not as a seven-passenger family hauler.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainOne of the Tahoe's strongest categories.2.32C+
Horsepower
355 hp (5.3L EcoTec3 V8, volume LT); 420 hp (6.2L EcoTec3 V8, RST Performance Package / Premier)
51/100
#12 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

2020 is the final model year of the fourth-generation (GMTK2UC) Tahoe that began in 2015 and a mechanical carry-over; the volume LS/LT run the 5.3L L83 V8 at 355 hp. The 420 hp 6.2L L86 is limited to the RST Performance Package and Premier, so most Tahoes sold are mid-pack for output in the full-size class.

Torque
383 lb-ft (5.3L V8, volume LT); 460 lb-ft (6.2L V8)
68/100
#11 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The 5.3L peaks at 383 lb-ft @ 4,100 rpm — adequate for a ~5,350 lb body-on-frame SUV but delivered fairly high in the rev range. The 6.2L's 460 lb-ft is reserved for the RST Performance Package and Premier.

0–60 mph time
~7.0 s (5.3L V8, volume trim); 5.7 s (6.2L RST Performance Package)
42/100
#38 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Instrumented tests of the 5.3L fourth-generation Tahoe fall between 6.7 and 7.1 s, so ~7.0 s is used for the volume configuration; the shorter, lighter Tahoe is a few tenths quicker than the Suburban on the same powertrain. The 6.2L RST Performance Package ran 5.7 s.

Powertrain refinement70
#30 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The naturally aspirated direct-injection small-block responds immediately with no turbo lag and pulls cleanly from low rpm. It stays below the top tier because Active Fuel Management's V8-to-V4 transitions can be heard and sometimes felt at light throttle, and the 5.3L sounds busy when pushed hard.

Transmission behavior61
#57 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The volume 5.3L still uses GM's 6L80 six-speed automatic in 2020. It is smooth and unobtrusive, but its wide ratios make it slow to kick down next to the 10-speed rivals. Only the 6.2L (RST Performance Package/Premier) gets the 10-speed.

Max towing capacity
8,600 lbs max (5.3L V8 2WD with Max Trailering Package); 8,400 lbs (5.3L 4WD with package, or 6.2L); 6,400 lbs (5.3L 4WD without package)
100/100
#1 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Properly equipped (2WD, 5.3L V8, Max Trailering Package), the Tahoe is rated at 8,600 lbs. That is above the 8,000 lb SUV band ceiling, so the item scores 100. Without the package the 4WD 5.3L drops to 6,400 lbs.

AWD/4WD availability75
#34 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Four-wheel drive is offered across the 2020 range (LS, LT, RST, Premier) through a two-speed transfer case with low range and an available Autotrac automatic mode. It falls short of the top tier because no locking differential or torque-vectoring axle is offered.

Off-road capability61
#13 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The LT Z71 package gives the 2020 Tahoe real light-duty off-road ability: off-road suspension, all-terrain tires, skid plates, hill descent control and a two-speed active transfer case. Its 116-inch wheelbase gives it better breakover and maneuverability than the Suburban, but with ~8 in of clearance, no locker and Z71 offered as a package rather than a dedicated trim, it stays mid-band.

Powertrain lineup breadth46
#40 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Two naturally aspirated gas V8s of the same family, with the larger one restricted to the RST Performance Package and Premier. The 2020 range has no diesel, hybrid or electrified option; the 3.0L Duramax arrived with the 2021 redesign.

2Efficiency & RangeThe Tahoe's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Combined fuel economy
17 MPG combined (5.3L V8 4WD, volume trim); 18 MPG (5.3L 2WD); 17 MPG (6.2L V8, either drivetrain)
6/100
#79 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

EPA rates the volume 5.3L 4WD Tahoe at 17 MPG combined, near the floor of the gas-SUV band. Its only efficiency aid is cylinder deactivation; it has no stop/start and just six gears. That is still a point better than the heavier 4WD Suburban.

City fuel economy
15 MPG city (5.3L V8, 2WD or 4WD); 14 MPG (6.2L V8)
6/100
#80 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

City driving is the weakest case: 15 MPG for the volume 5.3L, one point above the band floor. With no automatic stop/start, the V8 idles at every stop.

Highway fuel economy
21 MPG hwy (5.3L V8 4WD, volume trim); 22 MPG (5.3L 2WD / 6.2L 4WD); 23 MPG (6.2L 2WD)
6/100
#77 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Cylinder deactivation helps most on the highway, but the 4WD 5.3L still manages only 21 MPG, one point above the band floor. The 10-speed 6.2L actually beats it on the highway.

Driving range
~442 mi (5.3L V8 4WD, 26-gal tank); ~468 mi (5.3L 2WD); ~442 mi (6.2L)
51/100
#24 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The 26-gallon tank is five gallons smaller than the Suburban's, so the volume 4WD Tahoe gets about 442 miles per tank despite slightly better economy. That puts it near the middle of the band.

Estimated annual fuel cost
$3,950/yr (5.3L V8 4WD, EPA 15k mi/yr, regular); $3,700 (5.3L 2WD); $4,850 (6.2L on premium)
0/100
#74 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

On EPA's current fuel-price basis, the volume 4WD 5.3L costs more to fuel than the top of the SUV cost band, even on regular. The premium-fuel 6.2L adds about $900 a year.

Fuel requirements74
#52 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The volume 5.3L V8 runs on 87-octane regular and is available in E85 flex-fuel form. Requirements are mixed only because the 6.2L (RST Performance Package/Premier) calls for premium.

3SafetyOne of the Tahoe's weakest categories.0.83F
NHTSA overall rating
4 stars overall (RWD and 4WD) — 4★ frontal, 5★ side, 3★ rollover
50/100
#57 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA gave the 2020 Tahoe 4 stars overall in both drivelines. Side impact earned a full 5 stars, but frontal is 4 and rollover is 3 (22.8% rollover risk), which is typical for a tall body-on-frame SUV.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness40
#72 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

IIHS published no crashworthiness results for the 2015–2020 fourth-generation Tahoe: no small-overlap, moderate-overlap, side or roof-strength rating, and no TSP award. So none of its crash protection is independently confirmed, and the IIHS tests it skipped are exactly where large body-on-frame SUVs of this era tended to struggle.

Standard ADAS suite breadth42
#76 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The base LS offers forward collision alert and low-speed AEB only through the optional Enhanced Driver Alert Package. The volume LT includes low-speed AEB, FCA, lane keep assist with LDW and IntelliBeam. Adaptive cruise and high-speed emergency braking are limited to Premier options, so much of the suite sits on upper trims.

Automatic emergency braking performance35
#84 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The standard AEB on LT is a low-speed system only, and there is no pedestrian detection. Full-speed braking comes only with adaptive cruise on the Premier. IIHS did not test the autobrake; it confirmed only that the forward collision warning meets requirements.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage55
#60 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Side Blind Zone Alert with Lane Change Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert are available, and standard on upper trims. They only warn, and there is no trailer-length-aware coverage.

Lane keeping & centering45
#57 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Lane Keep Assist is a corrective nudge at the lane edge, available through Enhanced Driver Alert and standard from LT. No lane-centering function was offered on any 2020 trim.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist38
#74 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Adaptive cruise was optional only on the top Premier trim. The volume LS/LT trims got conventional cruise, and there was no integrated highway-assist steering on any trim.

Hands-free driving availability5
#50 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

No hands-free driving was offered. Super Cruise didn't reach the Tahoe until the 2023 model year of the next generation.

Headlight performance40
#50 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Lower trims use halogen projector headlamps, with HID/LED on upper trims. IntelliBeam auto high beams come with the Enhanced Driver Alert content. IIHS published no headlight rating for the 2020 Tahoe, and the IIHS headlight results it did publish for later full-size GM SUVs were poor.

Outward visibility55
#73 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The commanding seating position and upright glass give a good forward view, but thick rear pillars and the sheer length leave big blind zones. The rear camera is standard; Surround Vision and the Rear Camera Mirror are limited to the top trims.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability65
#47 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rated the LATCH hardware Acceptable. It has three full LATCH positions plus three tether-only positions, and a roomy second row with wide doors makes installation practical even though the anchors need some digging.

4Space & ComfortThe Tahoe's best-graded category.2.80B-
Seating capacity
8 (LT with 2nd-row bench); 7 with 2nd-row captain's chairs; 9 with LS front bench
100/100
#1 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The volume LT seats eight with the standard second-row bench; captain's chairs drop it to seven and the LS front-bench option allows nine.

Front headroom
42.8 in
100/100
#1 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Generous front headroom, identical to the 2020 Suburban on the shared K2XX body; carry-over figure in the final year of the 2015–2020 generation.

Front legroom
45.3 in
100/100
#1 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Front legroom is at the top of the SUV band.

Rear headroom
38.7 in (2nd row)
68/100
#52 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Second-row headroom is good but slightly behind the longer Suburban's 39.1 in.

Rear legroom
39.0 in (2nd row)
75/100
#31 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Adequate second-row legroom for a full-size SUV, but the solid-rear-axle K2XX packaging leaves less room than the independent-rear 2021 redesign or the 2020 Expedition.

Third-row usability35
#32 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

With just 24.8 in of legroom and a high floor forced by the solid rear axle, the 2020 Tahoe's third row is cramped even for kids on longer trips, and access requires tumbling a heavy second-row seat. It sits well below the Suburban (34.5 in) and the 2020 Expedition, so it falls in the token-seating band.

Cargo/trunk volume
51.7 cu ft behind 2nd row (15.3 cu ft behind 3rd row)
49/100
#9 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Cargo behind the second row is only mid-band for an SUV; the third-row seats fold onto a raised floor rather than into a well, and only 15.3 cu ft remains with all three rows up.

Max cargo volume
94.7 cu ft (2nd and 3rd rows folded)
88/100
#8 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Large maximum cargo volume, though well short of the Suburban's 121.7 cu ft and the Expedition's 104.6 cu ft.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions60
#30 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

A large center console (with a hidden storage area behind the touchscreen on many trims), door pockets and a 120V outlet make for competitive everyday storage. But the raised load floor and fold-on-top third row eat cargo depth, and there is none of the under-floor storage the 2021 redesign added.

Seat comfort64
#60 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The wide front buckets and second-row seats are comfortable over long stints. The knees-up, thinly padded third row pulls the overall rating below the Suburban's, whose third row has nearly 10 in more legroom.

Ride quality55
#71 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

It controls big bumps well, but the solid rear axle makes the cabin shudder over small ripples and patches. The shorter 116-in wheelbase makes the Tahoe a touch busier than the Suburban. Magnetic Ride Control (Premier/RST packages) helps but is not on the volume LT.

Cabin quietness72
#31 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Acoustic laminated glass, triple door seals and an unstressed V8 keep the cabin quiet at highway speed for a body-on-frame SUV.

Climate & comfort features65
#42 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Tri-zone automatic climate with rear vents is standard and remote start comes on most trims. Heated front seats arrive on the LT; ventilated front seats, a heated second row and a heated wheel are Premier content.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Tahoe's weakest categories.0.09F
Base MSRP
$50,295 (LS 2WD 5.3L V8, incl. $1,295 destination)
37/100
#65 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The 2020 Tahoe, the final year of the fourth generation, opened with the LS 2WD at $50,295 including destination. The Custom Edition was a package on the LS rather than a separate cheaper trim.

Volume-Trim Price
~$61,500 (LT 4WD as typically equipped); LT 4WD $58,095 base incl. destination; range $50.3K LS 2WD to $67.0K Premier 4WD
16/100
#71 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

LT 4WD is the volume configuration: $56,800 + $1,295 destination = $58,095, and common packages (Luxury, Z71, Texas/Premium Plus, 20-in wheels) put a typically equipped example around $61–62K.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$7,000 over 5 years (estimates range ~$3,300–$9,900)
38/100
#60 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The proven 5.3L V8 and parts commonality with Silverado/Suburban/Yukon keep labor and parts cheap, but big-SUV consumables, AFM lifter exposure and the 6-speed's age push projected costs above the SUV midpoint. Sources diverge widely, so a midpoint is used.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~52% of MSRP retained after 5 years
40/100
#28 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The Tahoe is one of the slowest-depreciating full-size SUVs, and KBB's 2020 5-Year Cost to Own award for the class was driven mainly by its low depreciation; final-year-of-generation status trims retention slightly versus the redesigned 2021.

Basic warranty

Powertrain warranty
5 yr / 60,000 mi powertrain
0/100
#29 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Standard GM 5/60 powertrain coverage — the bottom of the band.

Complimentary maintenance & perks50
#53 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Chevrolet Complete Care for 2020 covered one complimentary maintenance visit in the first year, 5yr/60k roadside assistance and courtesy transportation, plus OnStar/Connected Services and 4G LTE Wi-Fi trials. Basic perks only, well short of multi-year included maintenance.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$36,520 (≈$29,520 depreciation + $7,000 maintenance)
35/100
#67 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

$61,500 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (52% retained, or about $31,980) leaves about $29,520 in depreciation. Add the projected $7,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $36,520 in total.

6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.87C-
Predicted reliability55
#54 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The two main sources disagree. J.D. Power rates the 2020 Tahoe 'Great' (83/100) and lists it as a Dependability Award winner, but Consumer Reports' owner-survey data calls it less reliable than other 2020 vehicles. 2020 is the final, carry-over year of the 2015–2020 fourth generation, so its known issues (AFM lifters, electronics) were well documented by then. Mixed signals put it in the lower half of the middle band.

Brand reliability track record47
#62 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

In this period Chevrolet sat in the bottom third of Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings, although it was improving. It ran close to the industry average in J.D. Power's VDS. That is lower mid-pack, the same standing applied to the twin 2020 Suburban.

Recall & TSB history56
#37 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA's feed lists three campaigns covering the 2020 Tahoe. The largest (about 653k units across 2015–2020 GM trucks and SUVs) is EBCM software that could trigger driveline protection when a wheel-speed sensor failed. It applies only to 5.3L 4WD vehicles with a 3.08 axle and was fixed with a reflash. The other two are a low-volume fuel pump missing its pressure regulator (502 units) and Continental tires that were over-cured. None is a systemic powertrain campaign, but the generation also carried long-running AFM lifter and transmission bulletins. That is typical activity.

Powertrain durability reputation52
#65 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The volume 5.3L L83 V8 belongs to a small-block family with a long high-mileage record, and it is paired with the mature 6L80 six-speed automatic. That pairing avoids the 10-speed shudder complaints on the 6.2L cars. However, the L83's Active Fuel Management lifters and the oil consumption linked to AFM are a widely reported failure point for this generation, so the score lands in the mixed-history middle band.

Interior material quality66
#43 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

When it launched for 2015, the fourth-generation cabin was a big step up, with stitched soft-touch dash trim on LT and above. By 2020 it trailed the newer Expedition and lagged behind the Yukon Denali and Escalade. The volume LT mixes hard plastics in lower areas and uses an 8-inch MyLink screen. It is competitive, but not class-leading.

Fit & finish65
#42 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The Tahoe was built in Arlington, Texas alongside the Suburban, Yukon and Escalade. By 2020 the generation's assembly was mature, and J.D. Power's owner-reported quality score (83, 'Great') is strong. Electronics and trim complaints are scattered rather than systemic.

Dealer & service network80
#22 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Chevrolet's roughly 3,000 US dealers are one of the two largest networks in the country, giving dense coverage that includes the rural markets where the Tahoe sells heavily. Brand-level service satisfaction was only around average, which keeps it out of the top of the band.

Parts availability & repair cost62
#52 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The Tahoe shares the K2 platform, 5.3L V8 and 6L80 with the Silverado, Suburban, Yukon and Escalade. Parts are therefore cheap and abundant, the aftermarket is huge, and independent shops know the hardware. Average annual repair cost for a full-size SUV is above the all-vehicle mean, and AFM lifter jobs are expensive, so the score sits in the normal band rather than the top band.

7Technology & InfotainmentGrades below the middle of the scale.1.16D
Touchscreen size
8.0 in (standard on LS, LT, RST and Premier; no larger screen offered)
12/100
#31 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Every 2020 Tahoe uses the same 8-inch Chevrolet Infotainment System touchscreen. The 10.2-inch screen arrived only with the 2021 redesign.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness64
#38 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers praise the system's quick responses, big graphics and the physical knobs and buttons below the screen. But the small screen and dated menus trail the newer full-size rivals, Expedition SYNC 3 and Durango Uconnect included.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto28
#71 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every trim but wired only. GM's wireless projection rollout began with MY2021 vehicles.

Voice control & native navigation53
#38 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Voice recognition handles basic phone, audio and navigation commands but is not natural-language. Embedded navigation is standard on Premier and optional below; most owners use phone projection instead.

Audio system quality68
#41 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The base 6-speaker system is adequate. The available Bose premium system (10 speakers with a Richbass subwoofer, standard on LT and up) is a well-regarded step up for the segment.

Digital instrument cluster45
#43 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Analog gauges with a 4.2-inch driver information center on the volume trims. Premier offers an 8-inch reconfigurable color display between the gauges, which is partial digital at most and gated to the top trim.

OTA update capability30
#43 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

This generation has no meaningful whole-vehicle OTA program. Connectivity is OnStar telematics, and map and software updates usually go through the dealer. GM's OTA-capable electrical architecture arrived with the 2021 redesign.

Companion app & remote functions58
#36 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The myChevrolet app offers remote start, lock/unlock, vehicle locate and diagnostics. Full remote functionality depends on a paid OnStar plan after the trial, and there is no digital key.

Charging ports & device power60
#19 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Multiple USB-A ports serve the front and second rows, a 120V household outlet is fitted, and wireless charging is standard on upper trims. There is no USB-C and little for the third row.

Keyless & remote access66
#33 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Remote keyless entry is standard. Remote start is standard, and keyless open with push-button start and a hands-free power liftgate come on LT and up. There is no phone-as-key.

Camera & parking aids62
#30 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

A rear camera is standard and rear park assist is on most trims. Surround Vision, front park assist and the Rear Camera Mirror are Premier content, and no automated parking is offered.

Head-up display availability42
#41 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

A head-up display is offered only on the Premier, bundled with adaptive cruise and high-speed AEB. That is narrower than a typical top-trim option.

8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.77C-
Kid & car-seat practicality58
#61 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Tall doors and a roomy second row make car-seat installation easy. IIHS rates the LATCH Acceptable, with three full LATCH positions. The cramped third row and just 15.3 cu ft of cargo behind it mean a stroller and kids in all three rows is a squeeze, and the second row tumbles manually.

Family safety package44
#81 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The LT gets the Enhanced Driver Alert content as standard (low-speed AEB, forward collision alert, lane keep assist, safety alert seat). Blind-spot alert and rear cross-traffic alert are optional below Premier, adaptive cruise and high-speed AEB are Premier-only, and the generation carries a 4-star NHTSA overall rating (3-star rollover) with no IIHS crash tests.

Family road-trip comfort58
#59 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Comfortable, quiet front rows, tri-zone climate and an available rear-seat entertainment system suit four passengers well. With the third row in use, luggage space drops to 15.3 cu ft and third-row riders get 24.8 in of legroom, so it is a strong four- or five-seat road-tripper but not a seven-person one.

Daily driving ease56
#77 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The smooth V8 and commanding view make it easy to drive for its size, and at 204 in it is far less unwieldy than the Suburban. But the 6-speed, the solid rear axle's ride shudder, and adaptive cruise restricted to Premier add daily friction.

Commuting cost efficiency20
#82 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

15 MPG city and 17 combined, with no stop/start, make this an expensive commuter at about $3,950 a year in fuel. Regular-octane fuel on the 5.3L and cheap GM parts soften that only slightly.

Parking & maneuverability46
#76 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

At 204 in long and about 80.5 in wide it is still big for urban garages, but its 39.0 ft turning circle is notably tighter than the Suburban's 43 ft. A rear camera is standard, while surround view and front sensors are Premier-only.

Work capability76
#3 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Up to 8,600 lbs of towing (2WD 5.3L with Max Trailering) and standard trailering hardware handle most campers and boats, with the body-on-frame V8 doing it comfortably. The tow rating falls to 6,400 lbs on a 4WD without the package, and the carpeted cargo area is not a pickup bed.

Durability for work duty58
#11 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The proven body-on-frame architecture and small-block V8 have long police (Tahoe PPV) and fleet service behind them and the largest service network in the segment. Documented AFM lifter issues on the 5.3L keep it out of the top band.

Jobsite & upfit practicality60
#1 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Standard trailering hardware, a 120V outlet and a huge police/fleet upfit ecosystem through the Tahoe PPV and SSV give a usable work base. The interior is carpeted, and onboard power and cargo tie-downs are basic.

Long-distance comfort & range60
#57 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Quiet at speed with comfortable front seats and about 442 miles from the 26-gallon tank. The lack of adaptive cruise below Premier and the busy solid-axle ride keep it out of the top band.

Outdoor & adventure capability62
#32 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The Z71 package (two-speed transfer case, hill descent control, skid plates, all-terrain tires) and the shorter 116-in wheelbase make it a more capable trail tool than the Suburban, and it tows campers and boats with ease. There is no locking differential and Z71 is an option package, so most Tahoes don't have that hardware.

Gear & luggage flexibility62
#42 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

94.7 cu ft maximum and a standard hitch receiver handle bulky gear. But the third row folds onto a high floor rather than into a well, leaving just 15.3 cu ft with all seats up, and the seats fold manually.

9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.94C-
Handling & agility57
#67 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The final year of the 2015–2020 K2XX body-on-frame Tahoe feels planted and secure but ponderous. Its 116-in wheelbase makes it a bit wieldier than the Suburban, and Magnetic Ride Control improves emergency handling but is not on the volume LT.

Steering feel50
#64 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The electric power steering is light and numb with little feedback, though accurate enough to place a big SUV. That puts it at the floor of the 'precise but numb' band, matching the same-platform Suburban.

Braking confidence67
#28 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Four-wheel discs bring the roughly 5,400 lb Tahoe to a stop strongly and stably, with an unremarkable pedal. No instrumented 2020 stopping distance was located.

Powertrain smoothness & response62
#50 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The volume LT's 5.3L V8 (355 hp) is smooth and unstressed, but it is paired with the older 6-speed automatic, which is slow to kick down, and Active Fuel Management transitions. The 10-speed is reserved for the 6.2L.

Drivetrain noise & vibration62
#44 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The V8 is quiet and pleasant under load in a well-isolated cabin. Highway-speed driveline vibration complaints on the 2015–2020 Tahoe/Suburban and occasional AFM drone are a modest discount.

Turning circle
39.0 ft curb-to-curb
38/100
#61 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The Tahoe's 116-in wheelbase gives a much tighter circle than the Suburban (43.0 ft), but it is still large against the all-SUV band.

Driving position & ergonomics72
#28 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

A commanding seating position with good seat and wheel adjustment (power-adjustable pedals on most trims) and well-placed physical controls. The tall hood limits close-in visibility, and the column shifter draws some complaints.

Fun-to-drive factor50
#50 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The V8 rumble and the shorter, wieldier body make it slightly more engaging than the Suburban. The RST 6.2L Performance Package adds real pace, but the volume 5.3L LT is a pleasant hauler, not an enthusiast pick.

10Value & Market PositionOne of the Tahoe's strongest categories.2.05C
Standard equipment generosity55
#72 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The LS came with the 355 hp V8, three rows, 8-in MyLink with Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, 4G Wi-Fi and rear camera, but cloth seats, and active safety (forward collision alert, AEB, lane keep) was optional or reserved for upper trims — sparse next to a 2020 Expedition XLT at similar money.

Feature value per dollar58
#58 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Strong V8 towing capability and class-low ownership cost earn fair value, but the solid rear axle, cramped third row and small cargo area behind it give less space per dollar than the Expedition, and the redesigned 2021 was already announced.

Trim & configuration breadth72
#29 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Three trims (LS, LT, Premier) with 2WD/4WD, two V8s, and a deep package menu — Custom Edition, Z71, RST, RST Performance (6.2L/10-speed), Midnight, Texas, Premium Plus — spans about $50K to $67K+, though there is no true budget work trim and the 6.2L was gated to RST/Premier.

Sales popularity & market acceptance85
#4 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The Tahoe was America's best-selling full-size SUV through its fourth generation, ahead of Expedition and Suburban, even in its run-out year.

Brand desirability & image66
#45 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

The Tahoe nameplate has a loyal, durable following and strong resale halo, though Chevrolet itself is a mainstream rather than aspirational brand.

Deals & incentive availability85
#5 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

As the outgoing generation, the 2020 Tahoe carried substantial monthly cash and financing offers through the year, rising to an $8,370 Premier discount by December 2020 run-out.

Model freshness22
#82 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

2020 was the sixth and final model year of the fourth generation (2015–2020); the all-new fifth-generation 2021 Tahoe with independent rear suspension was revealed in December 2019, so 2020 buyers bought an outgoing design.

Critical reception & awards52
#70 of 87 SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers praised the V8, towing and quiet cabin but ranked the aging Tahoe behind the redesigned Expedition for space, ride and tech; its notable 2020 honor was KBB's cost-to-own award rather than a comparison-test win.
