The verdict

A mixed-report full-size suv, strong on space and held back by efficiency.

The 2021 Tahoe was the launch year of a new generation, and its gains are real. The new independent rear suspension rides far better than the 2020 and makes room for a third row adults can actually use (34.9 in of legroom). You also get 122.9 cu ft of cargo space and up to 8,400 lbs of towing. Two things weigh against it. The volume 5.3L V8 manages only about 18 MPG combined, and this first-year model carries a heavy recall record: 16 NHTSA campaigns, plus a 'much less reliable' verdict from Consumer Reports. Buy it for space and towing, and check the recall history of any specific truck you're considering.

51/100
#15 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

2021 is the launch year of the fifth-generation (T1UC) Tahoe. The volume LT uses the 5.3L L84 V8 at 355 hp. The 420 hp 6.2L L87 is offered on the RST, Premier and High Country, and the new 277 hp 3.0L LM2 Duramax diesel joined the range during the model year.

Torque
383 lb-ft (5.3L V8, volume); 460 lb-ft (6.2L V8 and 3.0L Duramax)
68/100
#15 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The 5.3L V8 peaks at 383 lb-ft. The 6.2L V8 and the LM2 Duramax both make 460 lb-ft, the diesel from just 1,500 rpm. The diesel's 495 lb-ft rating only arrived with the 2025 refresh.

0–60 mph time
~7.5 s (5.3L V8 4WD, volume); 7.7 s Edmunds 5.3L 4WD; ~5.9–6.0 s (6.2L V8)
33/100
#51 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Instrumented tests of 2021 5.3L 4WD Tahoes are 7.5 s (Car and Driver) and 7.7 s (Edmunds), which is slow even for the full-size class. The new generation is heavier and has independent rear suspension. The 6.2L V8 runs about 6 s.

Powertrain refinement72
#27 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The naturally aspirated pushrod V8s deliver torque without lag, and Dynamic Fuel Management is mostly seamless. The diesel is quiet for an oil-burner. The score stays below 80 because the 5.3L feels merely adequate when hurried in this heavier body, and the engine stop/start fitted to early 2021 builds is not always smooth on restart.

Transmission behavior73
#32 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Every 2021 engine is paired with the 10L80 10-speed automatic, which shifts smoothly and kicks down willingly and has sensible tow/haul logic. There is some part-throttle hunting among the closely spaced upper gears, and the new push/pull dash-mounted selector draws mixed reactions.

Max towing capacity
8,400 lbs max (5.3L V8 2WD w/ Max Trailering Package); 7,900 lbs without package
100/100
#1 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Properly equipped (2WD, 5.3L V8, Max Trailering Package), the 2021 Tahoe is rated at 8,400 lb. That is above the SUV band ceiling. Without the package it is 7,900 lb, and 4WD and other engines are rated slightly lower.

AWD/4WD availability76
#36 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

4WD is optional on every trim and standard on the Z71. Hardware includes a two-speed transfer case with 4-Lo, and Autotrac automatic 4WD is available on upper trims. No locking differential is offered, which keeps it out of the top band.

Off-road capability66
#14 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The Z71 trim adds a high-approach front fascia, skid plates, all-terrain tires, hill descent control and an off-road mode. The new Air Ride Adaptive Suspension can raise the body, giving credible light-to-moderate trail ability. There is no locker or hard-core trim, and the long wheelbase limits breakover.

Powertrain lineup breadth58
#27 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

2021 broadened the lineup to three distinct engines: the 5.3L V8, the 6.2L V8 and the new 3.0L Duramax turbodiesel I6. That is broader than most rivals, but there is no hybrid, PHEV or EV option.

2Efficiency & RangeThe Tahoe's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Combined fuel economy
18 MPG combined (5.3L V8 w/ stop-start, 2WD/4WD); 17 MPG (later 5.3L builds without stop-start); 16–17 MPG (6.2L); 22 MPG (3.0L Duramax 4WD)
12/100
#82 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The volume 5.3L V8 was rated at 18 MPG combined as launched with engine stop-start. Later 2021 builds without stop-start were re-rated at 17. Both sit near the SUV band floor, and only the diesel clears it meaningfully.

City fuel economy
16 MPG city (5.3L V8 w/ stop-start); 15 (5.3L without stop-start); 13–15 (6.2L); 20 (3.0L Duramax)
13/100
#84 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Stop-start and cylinder deactivation lift the 5.3L to 16 MPG city, which is still near the bottom of the SUV band for a body-on-frame SUV weighing more than 5,500 lb.

Highway fuel economy
20 MPG hwy (5.3L V8, all versions); 19–20 (6.2L); 26 (3.0L Duramax)
0/100
#82 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

At 20 MPG, the 5.3L's highway figure sits exactly on the SUV band floor. Mass and frontal area cap it despite the 10-speed automatic.

Driving range
~432 mi (5.3L V8, 24-gal tank, 18 MPG); ~408 mi (17 MPG builds); ~528 mi (3.0L Duramax)
48/100
#34 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The 24-gallon tank offsets poor economy and gives mid-pack range. The diesel exceeds 500 miles per fill.

Estimated annual fuel cost
$3,700/yr (5.3L V8 w/ stop-start, regular); $3,950 (no stop-start); $4,850–5,150 (6.2L, premium); $4,350 (diesel) — EPA, 15k mi/yr
0/100
#76 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

EPA's current-price estimate for the volume 5.3L is $3,700 a year on regular, which is above the SUV band ceiling. The 6.2L on premium costs well over $4,800.

Fuel requirements72
#57 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The volume 5.3L runs on regular and the Duramax on ordinary diesel. Only the 6.2L V8 calls for premium, so requirements are mixed across trims.

3SafetyMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.80C-
NHTSA overall rating
4 stars overall (2WD and 4WD) — 4★ frontal, 5★ side, 3★ rollover
50/100
#58 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA tested the 2021 Tahoe, the launch year of the fifth generation, in both drivelines and gave each a 4-star overall rating. Side protection is a strong 5 stars, but frontal is 4 and rollover is 3, which is typical for a tall body-on-frame SUV.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness50
#64 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

IIHS has not crash-tested the fifth-generation Tahoe, so the 2021 model has no Top Safety Pick or TSP+ award and no individual crashworthiness ratings. With nothing published, it can't score above the bottom of the middle band. Most of its full-size body-on-frame rivals are likewise untested.

Standard ADAS suite breadth64
#50 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Every 2021 trim gets Chevy Safety Assist as standard: AEB, Front Pedestrian Braking, Forward Collision Alert, Following Distance Indicator and IntelliBeam auto high beams, plus Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning. Blind-zone alerts, rear cross-traffic alert and adaptive cruise are standard only on upper trims, or come in packages on the volume LS/LT.

Automatic emergency braking performance60
#60 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Low-speed AEB and front pedestrian braking are standard. IIHS has published no front crash prevention rating for the 2021 Tahoe, so performance, especially at night, is unverified. The score is a mid-band estimate based on GM's system of that era.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage60
#58 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Side Blind Zone Alert with Lane Change Alert and Rear Cross Traffic Alert are standard on the upper trims and optional below. They warn only, with no active braking or steering intervention. Trailer-aware blind-zone coverage needs upper-trim trailering content.

Lane keeping & centering55
#50 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The standard Lane Keep Assist is a corrective nudge, not lane centering. The 2021 Tahoe offered no lane-centering or Super Cruise option at all; Super Cruise arrived for 2023.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist62
#45 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Camera/radar adaptive cruise is available and handles following distance competently. It is optional rather than standard on the volume trims, and with no lane-centering partner there is no integrated highway assist in 2021.

Hands-free driving availability10
#21 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

No hands-free driving system was offered on the 2021 Tahoe. GM's Super Cruise didn't reach the Tahoe until the 2023 model year.

Headlight performance66
#17 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

LED headlamps and IntelliBeam auto high beams are standard. IIHS has published no headlight rating for this generation, so beam performance across trims is unconfirmed.

Outward visibility66
#50 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The high driving position and large glass give a good forward view. The tall hood and wide D-pillars leave real blind zones, though. HD Surround Vision and the Rear Camera Mirror, both available, help make up for them.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability78
#22 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Wide rear doors, a tall roof and easy-to-reach second-row anchors make car-seat installation straightforward. The 2021 redesign's independent rear suspension opened up a much more usable third row, and the available second-row bench fits three across.

2nd-row headroom is generous in absolute terms and lands mid-to-upper band for an SUV.

Rear legroom
42.0 in 2nd row
100/100
#1 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The independent rear suspension that is new for 2021 lowered the floor and freed up 2nd-row legroom at the top of the SUV band.

Third-row usability72
#11 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The 2021 redesign changed the 3rd row most of all: it now has 34.9 in of legroom (up 10 in over the 2020 model) and 38.2 in of headroom, so teens and average adults can use it on medium trips. It still trails the longer Suburban and Expedition MAX, so it scores upper-mid band.

Cargo/trunk volume
72.6 cu ft behind the 2nd row (3rd row folded); 25.5 cu ft behind the 3rd row
87/100
#2 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Cargo space behind the 2nd row is near the top of the SUV band, and 25.5 cu ft remain with all three rows in use.

Max cargo volume
122.9 cu ft with both rear rows folded
100/100
#1 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

With both rear rows folded, cargo space is above the top of the SUV band.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions68
#12 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

It has a deep center console, big door pockets, a cargo management system, a power-fold 3rd row on upper trims and a wireless charging pad from LT. Tahoes built from July 12, 2021 lost that pad to the chip shortage, and there is no standout storage idea, so it scores as competitive.

Seat comfort74
#30 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers praise the broad, well-padded front seats and the roomy 2nd row for long trips. The LT gets 10-way power front seats with heated leather and driver memory, but 12-way seats and ventilation are only on Premier and up, and no massage function is offered.

Ride quality73
#27 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The independent rear suspension that is new for 2021 rides far better than the solid-axle 2020 Tahoe, and reviewers call it near luxury-truck-like with Magnetic Ride. The volume LT uses passive dampers, though, so it is composed rather than plush.

Cabin quietness74
#31 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Good insulation and the hushed V8 keep the cabin quiet at highway speed. Some wind noise comes off the large mirrors and upright body, and the passive-suspension LT lets in more road noise than upper trims.

Climate & comfort features72
#24 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Tri-zone automatic climate and remote start are standard, and heated front seats arrive on the LT. The heated steering wheel, ventilated front seats and heated 2nd row come only on Premier and High Country.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Tahoe's weakest categories.0.58F
Base MSRP
$51,295 (LS 2WD 5.3L V8, incl. $1,695 destination)
34/100
#71 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

For 2021, the first year of the fifth generation, the entry LS 2WD started at about $51.3K with destination. That's roughly $3K below the 2023 price and still in the upper half of the SUV band.

Volume-Trim Price
~$60,500 (LT 4WD as typically equipped); range $51.3K LS 2WD to ~$72.8K High Country 4WD
18/100
#74 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The LT is the volume trim. The LT 4WD lists at about $59K with destination, and typical options put it around $60.5K.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$6,800 over 5 years (estimates range ~$3,300–$8,800)
42/100
#63 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The 5.3L V8 and 10-speed are shared with the Silverado, Suburban and Yukon, which keeps parts cheap. Big-SUV consumables and the known AFM/DFM lifter exposure on early fifth-gen V8s push costs above the segment midpoint.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~57% of MSRP retained after 5 years
57/100
#26 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The 2021 Tahoe sold new before the 2021–22 inventory squeeze and then benefited from inflated used-SUV prices, so its real 5-year retention ran above CarEdge's generic 48% model curve. A mid-to-high 50s figure is the defensible midpoint.

Standard Chevrolet owner benefits: one complimentary maintenance visit in the first year, 5yr/60k roadside assistance and courtesy transportation, and OnStar/Connected Services trials. Real, but thin.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$32,815 (≈$26,015 depreciation + $6,800 maintenance)
45/100
#59 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

$60,500 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (57% retained, or about $34,485) leaves about $26,015 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,800 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $32,815 in total.

6Reliability & QualityOne of the Tahoe's weakest categories.1.50D
Predicted reliability40
#77 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

2021 is the launch year of the fifth-generation (T1XX) Tahoe. That is the riskiest year of a redesign, and the owner data agrees. Consumer Reports rates the 2021 'much less reliable' than other cars from the same model year, worse than its 'less reliable' verdict on the 2023. J.D. Power's 76/100 is only 'Average', and J.D. Power itself warns that the figure was carried over from the previous generation and that first-year redesigns are unproven. That puts it below average, under the later carry-over years.

Brand reliability track record55
#51 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Chevrolet's multi-year dependability record is split. In the J.D. Power VDS it sits near the industry average; the outgoing-generation Tahoe was named best Large SUV in the 2021 VDS. Consumer Reports' brand rankings put Chevrolet in the lower third of mainstream brands. Together that is mid-pack.

Recall & TSB history38
#69 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA lists 16 recalls for the 2021 Tahoe, a heavy launch-year tally, and several are safety-critical. They include loss of power-steering assist (21V455), incorrect brake/ESC calibration (21V579), driveshaft failure (22V036), fuel-pump module failure causing stalls (21V739), a transmission control valve that can lock the rear wheels (24V797) and the 6.2L L87 crankshaft/rod engine-failure campaign (25V274). On top of these come multiple seat and seat-belt assembly recalls and long-running TSBs for 10L80 shudder and DFM lifters. That is repeated, serious activity.

Powertrain durability reputation48
#73 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The volume 5.3L L84 V8 belongs to a long-lived small-block family, but its Dynamic Fuel Management lifter and camshaft failures are well documented across this generation. The optional 6.2L L87 is under an engine-failure recall that covers 2021, and the 10L80 10-speed carries shudder bulletins plus a 2021 TCM valve recall. The 3.0L LM2 Duramax is well regarded apart from a fuel-tank campaign. Consumer Reports' poor 2021 rating adds to the concern, so this sits just under the mixed band.

Interior material quality58
#66 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

This is the original fifth-generation cabin, with a 10.2-inch center screen set in a dash that has a lot of hard plastic. Better leather and wood are reserved for the Premier and High Country. It is roomy and functional but below the Yukon Denali, Escalade and the 2025 refresh on richness, and reviewers singled out the plain dash design. Acceptable for the segment.

Fit & finish58
#66 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

This was the first year of Arlington production for the new T1XX SUVs, and the assembly issues show. There are several recalls for front seats whose attachment bolts were not reinstalled, unsecured or misrouted seat belts, a trapped second-row latch and a missing fuel-tank adhesive layer. On top of these, owners report electronics faults and cabin rattles. Exterior panel fit is competitive, but launch-year consistency was weaker than in later years.

Dealer & service network83
#18 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Chevrolet's US franchised dealer network, at roughly 2,900–3,000 stores, is among the largest in the country, with dense rural coverage where full-size SUVs sell heavily. J.D. Power owners rate the dealership experience 'Great', but brand-level service satisfaction overall is about average.

Parts availability & repair cost76
#21 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The Tahoe shares the T1XX architecture, small-block V8s and 10L80 transmission with the Suburban, Yukon, Escalade, Silverado and Sierra, so OEM parts supply and the aftermarket are both very large and independent shops know the hardware well. Big tires and brakes, plus the optional Magnetic Ride and Air Ride hardware, make consumables and some repairs expensive.

7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.57C+
Touchscreen size
10.2 in, standard on every 2021 trim
38/100
#15 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Every 2021 Tahoe, base LS included, gets a 10.2-inch touchscreen. That is mid-pack for the class, and the 17.7-inch screen only arrived with the 2025 refresh.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness68
#30 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Chevrolet Infotainment 3 is quick, uses large icons, and keeps physical climate and volume controls. The graphics are plain, and the volume trims run the Plus version without native navigation, so it scores usable and good rather than class-leading.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto90
#6 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are standard on every 2021 Tahoe.

Voice control & native navigation56
#39 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Embedded Connected Navigation comes only with Infotainment 3 Premium on Premier and High Country. The LS, LT, RST and Z71 rely on phone projection and basic GM voice commands, and Google built-in had not reached the Tahoe in 2021.

Audio system quality74
#36 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The volume LT gets a 9-speaker Bose premium system, and Premier and High Country step up to a 10-speaker Bose surround system with Centerpoint. That is solid, but there is no top-tier branded system.

Digital instrument cluster52
#41 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The LS, LT, RST and Z71 keep analog gauges with a 4.2-inch color driver information center. Only Premier and High Country get the 8-inch configurable digital cluster, so the digital display is upper-trim only.

OTA update capability66
#11 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The 2021 redesign moved the Tahoe onto GM's Vehicle Intelligence Platform electrical architecture, which can take over-the-air updates. In its first year that was used sparingly, mostly for infotainment and module fixes, with no feature drops.

Companion app & remote functions66
#22 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The myChevrolet app covers remote start, lock and unlock, locate and diagnostics, and 4G LTE Wi-Fi is built in. Remote commands require a paid Connected Services plan after the trial, and there is no phone-as-key.

Charging ports & device power68
#14 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

USB charge ports reach all three rows and a 120V outlet is available. The LT's wireless charging pad was deleted from Tahoes built on or after July 12, 2021 because of the chip shortage, so many 2021s lack it.

Keyless & remote access72
#25 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Keyless Open and Start and remote start are standard, and the LT has a power liftgate. The hands-free liftgate is reserved for upper trims, and there is no phone-as-key.

Camera & parking aids72
#21 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

An HD rear camera is standard. Front and rear Park Assist start at Premier, while HD Surround Vision and the Rear Camera Mirror are standard on High Country and in packages lower down, so volume buyers get less than the size calls for.

Head-up display availability66
#11 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

A large 15-inch diagonal color head-up display is offered, standard on High Country and optional on Premier only, so volume-trim buyers can't get it.

8Use-Case FitOne of the Tahoe's strongest categories.2.77B-
Kid & car-seat practicality77
#14 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The redesigned body has large rear doors and 42.0 in of 2nd-row legroom, so car seats fit easily, and the volume trim's bench seats three across. 25.5 cu ft behind the 3rd row takes a stroller. The tall step-in height keeps it below 80.

Family safety package62
#49 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Chevy Safety Assist (AEB with pedestrian braking, lane keep assist, forward collision alert, IntelliBeam) is standard, but blind-spot and rear cross-traffic alerts are Premier-and-up or packaged, adaptive cruise is optional, and the crash record is a 4-star NHTSA overall with no IIHS test.

Family road-trip comfort75
#15 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

A 3rd row adults can use (34.9 in legroom), 72.6 cu ft behind the 2nd row, tri-zone climate, USB ports in every row and an available dual-screen rear media system make it a strong family tourer. Heated and ventilated rear comfort is limited to Premier and up.

Daily driving ease68
#44 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The 5.3L V8 and 10-speed are smooth from a stop, and the new independent rear suspension soaks up potholes. It is still about 211 in long with a tall hood, early builds' stop-start can be abrupt, and the 2021 offers no hands-free driving.

Commuting cost efficiency59
#22 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The volume 5.3L V8 is EPA-rated 18 MPG combined on early builds with stop-start and 17 MPG later, about $3,700–3,950 a year in fuel on regular gas. The 22 MPG Duramax is a cheap option, but tires, brakes and insurance on a 5,600-lb SUV keep the cost per mile high.

Parking & maneuverability56
#56 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

At about 210.7 in long with a 39-ft turning circle, the Tahoe is awkward in garages and tight urban spots. A rear camera is standard, but park assist starts at Premier and surround view at High Country or in packages, so the volume LT gets little help.

Work capability76
#2 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

It tows up to 8,400 lbs with the Max Trailering Package (7,900 lbs without), enough for most travel trailers and boats, with an integrated brake controller available. 122.9 cu ft of lockable cargo space works well for tools.

Durability for work duty77
#4 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The body-on-frame chassis and Silverado-shared V8 and 10-speed have a fleet and police (PPV/SSV) track record. 2021 is the redesign's first year, though, with 16 recall campaigns and documented DFM lifter and torque-converter trouble, so it scores a little lower than later years.

Jobsite & upfit practicality68
#2 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The PPV/SSV fleet ecosystem supports deep aftermarket upfits, and it comes with a factory hitch and 7-pin connector, roof rails, cargo management and an available 120V outlet. The carpeted, leather-appointed cabin is not built for hard work.

Long-distance comfort & range69
#31 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

A 24-gal tank gives about 410–430 miles on the V8 and more than 520 on the diesel, and the seats and cabin are comfortable and quiet over distance. Adaptive cruise is optional and the 2021 has no lane centering or hands-free driving, so driver-assist fatigue relief is thin.

Outdoor & adventure capability75
#14 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The Z71, a dedicated trim for the first time in 2021, adds a two-speed transfer case, skid plate, all-terrain tires, hill descent control and optional Air Ride. Combined with 8,400-lb towing and roof rails, it can reach most campsites. It has no lockers and its long wheelbase limits it on tight trails.

Gear & luggage flexibility78
#11 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

With both rows folded there are 122.9 cu ft, plus 72.6 cu ft behind the 2nd row and 25.5 behind the 3rd. The redesign added a flat-folding, push-button 3rd row, and it has a wide 49.4-in cargo floor, roof rails and a factory hitch.

9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.19C
Handling & agility63
#46 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The independent rear suspension that is new for 2021 handles with relatively little body roll and composure that reviewers called a vast improvement over the 2020. The volume LT's passive dampers and roughly 5,600 lb make it secure rather than agile.

Steering feel58
#39 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers describe the electric steering as weighty, reasonably direct and precise, but it gives little feedback and is only so-so in its responsiveness.

Braking confidence63
#46 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Large four-wheel ventilated discs give positive pedal response and adequate stopping for the weight. Instrumented stops from 60 mph are mid-pack for body-on-frame SUVs, and the brakes work hard on long tow descents.

Powertrain smoothness & response69
#42 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The 5.3L V8 and 10-speed are smooth and linear and mostly shift seamlessly. The heavier new body dulls response, the closely spaced gears hunt at times, and the engine stop/start fitted to early 2021 builds can restart roughly.

Drivetrain noise & vibration68
#29 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The small-block V8 has a muted, pleasant burble under load and goes quiet at cruise. Some low-frequency drone comes through during cylinder deactivation.

Turning circle
39.0 ft curb-to-curb (fifth-generation SWB Tahoe; ~38–40 ft by wheel/engine)
38/100
#62 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The new-generation standard-wheelbase Tahoe turns in about 39 ft, mid-band for SUVs but still a big vehicle to maneuver.

Driving position & ergonomics71
#38 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The driver sits high with a commanding view and has physical climate and audio controls. The new push-button and pull-toggle gear selector takes getting used to, the volume LT has analog gauges and no power column, and thick rear pillars limit rearward vision.

Fun-to-drive factor57
#38 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The V8 rumble and relaxed cruising make it pleasant, but it is a heavy body-on-frame family hauler with numb steering, bought for its capability rather than the drive.

10Value & Market PositionOne of the Tahoe's strongest categories.2.99B-
Standard equipment generosity65
#51 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The 2021 LS has a standard 10.2-in touchscreen, tri-zone climate, a power liftgate and Chevy Safety Assist (AEB, lane keep). Its cloth seats and basic cluster push most buyers to the LT for leather, Bose and digital gauges.

Feature value per dollar77
#11 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

This is the cheapest way into GM's new T1 full-size SUV, with independent rear suspension, an adult-usable third row and 8,000+ lb towing. Launch prices sat a few thousand below 2023's, and the Duramax diesel was only a $995 option on most trims.

Trim & configuration breadth82
#11 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Six trims (LS, LT, RST, Z71, Premier, High Country), three engines (5.3L V8, 6.2L V8, 3.0L Duramax) and 2WD/4WD on all but the Z71 make this one of the widest ladders in the segment.

Sales popularity & market acceptance84
#16 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

The new generation made the Tahoe the best-selling full-size SUV in the US in 2021, even through the chip shortage, well ahead of the Expedition and Yukon.

Brand desirability & image68
#49 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Chevrolet is a neutral mainstream brand, but the Tahoe nameplate has strong equity and resale demand of its own.

Deals & incentive availability52
#42 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Launch-year 2021 Tahoes saw some early cash and financing offers. Once the 2021 chip shortage hit, full-size GM SUVs moved at or above MSRP with little incentive spend for most of the model year.

Model freshness88
#11 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

2021 is the launch year of the fifth generation. It brought a new T1 platform with independent rear suspension, a much bigger third row and cargo area, the first Duramax diesel offering, and a 10.2-in screen.

Critical reception & awards75
#19 of 92 SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers broadly praised the redesign for its space, ride from the new independent rear suspension, and versatility, calling it a big step over the old truck-based Tahoe. Interior materials and fuel economy kept it from being the clear comparison winner over the Expedition.
