The verdict
A struggling mid-size sedan, strong on ownership and held back by performance.
The 2019 Sonata is the last year of an aging design, and it shows in the details that matter most: a middling 185-hp 2.4L engine, a 7-inch touchscreen that's small even for its era, and driver-assist features like adaptive cruise and lane keeping locked to the top Limited trim. What it gets right is the fundamentals of value — a segment-leading 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, a low $23,185 starting price, and roomy front seats — but its 2.4L GDI engine is the same Theta II family behind Hyundai's well-documented connecting-rod recall, which weighs heavily on long-term confidence. This is a car for a buyer who wants warranty security and a low price more than driving excitement or the newest tech.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe Sonata's lowest-graded category.0.16F
The 2019 Sonata's volume trim is the SE with the naturally aspirated 2.4L Theta II GDI four at 185 hp @ 6,000 rpm — this same engine and rating carries across SE, SEL, Sport and Limited (four of the six gas trims). It normalizes low against the sedan band, which is stretched by turbo and performance sedans in the same segment.
178 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm from the base 2.4L is modest for the mid-size class, typical of a naturally aspirated four with no forced induction or electrification.
Hyundai does not publish a 0–60 claim. Instrumented tests of the same 185-hp 2.4L/6-speed-automatic combination on this unchanged LF-generation powertrain (2015 Sport 7.9s, 2015 Limited 8.4s/9.3s, 2018 SEL 7.4s, 2018 Limited 7.9s) cluster around 8 seconds; 8.2s is used as the representative volume-trim figure since no 2019-specific instrumented test was found. Mid-pack to slow for the segment.
The 2.4L is generally smooth and linear at part throttle with no turbo lag, but reviewers and owners consistently note it feels short on thrust — merging and passing require more throttle than rivals with more low-end torque. Solidly mid-band: refined in normal driving, unremarkable and occasionally strained under load.
The conventional 6-speed torque-converter automatic is praised for quick, decisive shifts and a lack of the hunting/droning behavior that plagues some rivals' CVTs and 9-speed autos — a genuine strength even though the engine behind it is unremarkable.
The 2019 Sonata (LF generation) is FWD-only across every trim in the US market — no AWD or 4WD was offered on any Sonata variant this generation, unlike segment rivals such as the Camry or Altima that offered AWD on some trims.
The 2019 lineup spans three distinct gas engines (2.4L base, 1.6L turbo Eco, 2.0L turbo Limited 2.0T) plus a separate Hybrid and Plug-in Hybrid model — genuinely broad for a mainstream mid-size sedan in this era. Held below 80 because the PHEV and Hybrid are low-volume niche trims rather than mainstream availability, and there is no EV variant.
2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.75C-
The SE 2.4L volume trim is EPA-rated at 29 MPG combined — a middling figure for a mainstream mid-size sedan of this era, well behind the Eco's 1.6L turbo (31 MPG) and far behind the Hybrid, but ahead of the more powerful 2.0T Limited.
26 MPG city for the volume 2.4L SE trim, typical for a naturally aspirated four in stop-and-go driving with no electrification to help.
35 MPG highway is a solid, competitive figure for the segment and the best part of the gas Sonata's label.
An 18.5-gallon tank paired with 29 MPG combined gives roughly 536 miles of range between fill-ups — a genuinely strong figure for the segment despite the middling combined MPG, thanks to the Sonata's generous tank capacity.
EPA's standard-assumption annual fuel cost of $2,250 for the volume 2.4L SE trim is a mid-pack figure for the class — a real running-cost gap versus the Hybrid ($1,550-1,600/yr) but better than thirstier turbo/performance mid-size sedans.
The entire 2019 gas lineup, including the turbocharged 1.6T and 2.0T engines, runs on 87-octane regular unleaded with no premium recommendation, and the Hybrid/Plug-in Hybrid likewise need no premium and no home-charging investment to use productively (the plug-in benefits from one but doesn't require it). A genuine ownership-cost strength.
3SafetyOne of the Sonata's strongest categories.2.14C
The 2019 Sonata (LF-generation facelift) earned NHTSA's top overall rating, with a 4-star rollover result being the only sub-5 component.
IIHS rated every crashworthiness test Good (small overlap driver/passenger, moderate overlap, side, roof strength, head restraints) and named the 2019 Sonata a Top Safety Pick+, though the award applies only when the vehicle is equipped with the optional front crash prevention system and LED headlights.
Blind-spot collision warning, rear cross-traffic collision warning, and forward collision-avoidance assist (AEB) were made standard across the 2019 Sonata lineup including SE/SEL volume trims, but adaptive cruise control and lane keeping assist remained exclusive to the range-topping Limited trim's tech package.
IIHS front crash prevention testing rated the optional AEB system Superior for vehicle-to-vehicle avoidance (avoided collision at both 12 and 25 mph) but gave No Credit for daytime pedestrian detection, so real-world coverage is uneven and the strong result requires the optional system.
Blind-spot collision warning and rear cross-traffic collision warning were standard from the SEL trim up, but the volume trims get alert-only systems — the braking-capable Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist was reserved for the Limited.
Lane departure warning and lane keeping assist were standard only on the Limited trim's tech package for 2019 — the SE/SEL/Sport volume trims had no lane-centering or lane-keeping hardware at all, and where fitted the system was an early, unrefined implementation.
Smart (adaptive) cruise control with stop/start was bundled into the Limited-only Tech Package; every other 2019 Sonata trim had conventional cruise control only, and there was no combined highway-assist feature on this generation.
Hyundai had no hands-free highway driving system in its 2019 lineup; Highway Driving Assist did not arrive until the redesigned 2020 Sonata, so no trim of the 2019 car offers any hands-free capability.
IIHS rated the halogen projector headlights fitted to SE, Eco, SEL, Sport and Sport 2.0T — i.e. every trim below Limited — Poor; only the Limited and Limited 2.0T with the Ultimate package's LED projector/curve-adaptive units scored Good.
Reviewers describe decent, if unremarkable, outward sightlines for the sedan, with a standard rearview camera and standard blind-spot warning helping offset average rear-quarter visibility.
No trim-specific LATCH testing was found for the 2019 Sonata; a conventional mid-size sedan of this era with normally-sized rear doors and lower-anchor placement typically scores as workable but not exceptional, so this is inferred from segment norms.
4Space & ComfortOne of the Sonata's strongest categories.2.77B-
Standard 5-passenger mid-size sedan seating across all 2019 Sonata trims (SE through Limited 2.0T).
Segment-leading front headroom for the seventh-generation (LF, facelifted 2018) Sonata carried into MY2019.
The LF-generation Sonata's front legroom was a class benchmark, exceeding the mid-size sedan norm.
Competitive second-row headroom for the segment, aided by the sedan's tall greenhouse.
Adequate but unremarkable rear legroom, trailing class leaders like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry.
Solid, mid-pack trunk volume for a mid-size mainstream sedan.
Conventional console bin, door pockets and a trunk pass-through with 60/40-split rear seats, but no standout storage innovation.
Cloth seats on SE/SEL and leather on Limited are widely described as comfortable and well-cushioned for daily and highway use, without the standout support of segment leaders.
Reviewers rank the LF-generation Sonata's ride in the top third of the mid-size class — bumps are smoothed with good body control and no floatiness.
Reasonably hushed at highway speed for a mainstream mid-size sedan, with some road and wind noise reported versus the quietest class leaders.
Heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control and wireless device charging arrive at SEL and up; ventilated front seats and leather add on Limited, but no rear climate vents or remote pre-conditioning are offered.
5Cost of OwnershipThe Sonata's best-graded category.4.00A+
Entry SE trim MSRP with destination for the 2019 model year, near the low end of the mainstream mid-size sedan band.
SEL is the representative volume trim, adding alloy wheels, larger touchscreen and driver-assist options over the SE.
Hyundai Sonata maintenance/repair costs run below the mid-size segment average; blended from RepairPal's annual figure and CarEdge's decade-long total.
The Sonata depreciates somewhat faster than the mid-size segment average (46.2% vs. 41.5% at 5 years), consistent with a nameplate whose sales and residuals softened as the generation aged.
Hyundai's 'America's Best Warranty' basic coverage, well above the segment's typical 3-year term.
Segment-leading powertrain coverage double the typical 5-year term; reverts to 5 yr/60,000 mi for subsequent owners.
3 years/36,000 miles of complimentary scheduled maintenance (oil/filter, tire rotations) plus 5 years/unlimited-mile roadside assistance is a genuine multi-year benefit, though it stops short of a longer maintenance-plus-connected-services package some rivals bundled.
$24,835 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (53.8% retained, or about $13,361) leaves about $11,474 in depreciation. Add the projected $2,750 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $14,224 in total.

The 2019 Sonata sits on the LF-generation platform still under Hyundai's Theta II 2.4L GDI engine, and Consumer Reports' owner-survey data for this model year runs below average with reported oil consumption, transmission, and electrical complaints — not top-tier or even a clean average verdict.
Hyundai ranked 5th among non-premium brands in J.D. Power's 2019 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study — solidly mid-to-upper pack, not top-5 premium-tier but well clear of the bottom third.
The 2019 Sonata's 2.4L GDI Theta II engine is explicitly named in Hyundai's Knock Sensor Detection System campaign (Service Campaign 953/966) covering 2011–2019 Sonata and related models for connecting-rod bearing failure and engine-fire risk, and in the subsequent Theta II class-action settlement — a systemic powertrain safety recall, not a minor administrative one.
The base 2.4L Theta II GDI four-cylinder in the 2019 Sonata is the specific engine family behind Hyundai's multi-billion-dollar connecting-rod bearing failure crisis — thousands of documented catastrophic failures and reported fires across 2011–2019 Sonatas — making this one of the worst-regarded mainstream engine families of its era rather than merely unproven.
Reviewers praised the 2019 Sonata's dash design, brushed-aluminum accents and soft-touch coverage as looking costlier than the price point, while consistently noting it still trails segment-leading rivals in outright material richness.
Contemporary reviews describe solid, rattle-free assembly with well-organized control layouts; "just okay" phrasing reflects competitive-but-unremarkable initial quality rather than any noted defects.
Hyundai runs one of the larger mainstream-brand dealer footprints in the US (roughly 850 dealers), giving the Sonata broad nationwide service access typical of a high-volume mainstream nameplate; service satisfaction is average-to-good rather than a standout.
As a high-volume mainstream mid-size sedan, the Sonata benefits from abundant OEM and aftermarket parts supply and Hyundai's generally below-average dealer labor/parts pricing versus non-Korean mainstream rivals, offset somewhat by the extra cost profile of Theta II-related engine work when out of warranty.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Sonata's weakest categories.0.88F
The volume SE/SEL trims carry a 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen; only the Limited's optional navigation package steps up to 8 inches.
Hyundai's Display Audio interface of this era is simple and reasonably responsive with clear physical shortcut buttons, though visually dated next to newer rivals.
Wired Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the 2019 Sonata lineup, but no trim offers wireless phone projection — that arrived only with the redesigned 2020 (DN8) Sonata.
Built-in voice commands are functional but basic, and native navigation is an option limited to the top Limited trim's 8-inch package — most owners default to phone-projected maps.
The optional Infinity 8-speaker system (with center channel and subwoofer) on the Limited is a genuine step up; base 6-speaker audio is adequate but unremarkable.
Gauges are analog with only a small color TFT supplemental display between them — no configurable full-digital cluster is offered on any 2019 trim.
Blue Link provides remote connectivity but the 2019 Sonata has no over-the-air software update capability for the infotainment system or vehicle software.
Blue Link's app covers remote start, lock/unlock, vehicle locate and cabin pre-conditioning, but the richer packages require a paid subscription after an initial free trial.
Standard USB port(s) plus Qi wireless device charging from SEL up cover typical needs, though ports are legacy USB-A, not USB-C, and rear-seat charging is limited.
Proximity smart key with push-button start and remote start are available from SEL up, giving most buyers full keyless convenience without a phone-as-key option.
A standard rearview camera is present fleet-wide with rear parking sensors added on the Limited, but no 360-degree surround-view system is offered at any trim.
No head-up display is offered on any 2019 Sonata trim; Hyundai introduced HUD to the Sonata line only with the redesigned 2020 (DN8) model.
8Use-Case FitOne of the Sonata's weakest categories.1.13D
Wide-opening rear doors and accessible LATCH anchors make car-seat installation straightforward, but the 35.6-in rear legroom is only average once a rear-facing seat is installed.
NHTSA's 5-star overall rating and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+ designation (with front crash prevention and available upgraded headlights) give the Sonata strong family safety credentials, though blind-spot warning is the main ADAS standard on affordable trims — forward collision-avoidance and lane keep assist require upper trims.
A 16.3 cu ft trunk and generous front-seat space handle a family's gear and passengers reasonably well, but rear amenities are basic — no rear climate vents or rear entertainment options.
The 2.4L/6-speed automatic combination is smooth and unobtrusive in stop-and-go traffic, with light, accurate steering that reviewers describe as confident without being nervous.
The volume 2.4L trims return an EPA-estimated 25-26/33-35/28-29 mpg city/highway/combined — average for a gas mid-size sedan, undercut by the more efficient 1.6T Eco trim which most buyers skip.
A 35.6-ft turning circle and mid-size sedan footprint (191.1 in long) make the Sonata easy to place in city driving and parking garages, aided by a standard rearview camera.
As a front-wheel-drive sedan, the Sonata carries no towing rating and offers only trunk cargo space — it has essentially no work-vehicle capability.
Hyundai's mainstream reputation for reliability is reasonable, but the Sonata sedan platform is not proven or marketed for fleet/work-abuse duty the way trucks and vans are.
There is no bed, tie-down hardware, onboard power outlet, or upfit ecosystem for a sedan of this type.
Comfortable front seats, a composed highway ride and roughly 500+ miles of range on the 18.5-gallon tank at 33 highway mpg make the Sonata a capable if unremarkable highway cruiser; driver-assist tech beyond blind-spot warning costs extra.
No all-wheel-drive option exists for the US-market 2019 Sonata, ground clearance is standard sedan-low, and there are no factory off-pavement or camping-oriented features.
60/40-split folding rear seats with a trunk pass-through give reasonable flexibility for oversized items, though the fixed trunk opening and lack of roof rails limit bulkier gear.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.13C
Reviewers describe secure, confident handling with good body control and no floatiness, but without the sportier edge of segment standouts like the Mazda6 or Accord Sport.
Steering is accurate and well-weighted for everyday use, praised as improved over older Hyundai sedans, though it delivers little genuine road feedback.
No major complaints surface about pedal feel or stopping distances for the 2.4L Sonata; brakes are adequate and predictable without being a standout.
The naturally aspirated 2.4L four-cylinder paired with a 6-speed automatic shifts smoothly and predictably, though throttle response is unhurried compared with the optional 2.0T.
The 2.4L engine is unobtrusive at cruising speed but becomes noticeably vocal under hard acceleration, typical for a naturally aspirated four in this class.
A tight turning circle for a mid-size sedan aids low-speed maneuverability.
A logically laid-out cabin, good outward visibility and easy ingress/egress make the Sonata comfortable to drive daily, with power seat adjustment available from SEL up.
The Sonata is a competent, pleasant daily driver but not one enthusiasts single out for engagement; the optional 2.0T adds some verve but isn't the volume configuration.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.11C
Base SE already includes automatic headlights, keyless entry, cruise control, LED daytime running lights and a 7-inch touchscreen with Bluetooth and smartphone integration — generous for the price, in keeping with Hyundai's segment reputation, though not the loaded-at-base standout some rivals offer.
Fair content-for-price across the range — competitive tech and safety features for the money — but the aging LF-generation platform, interior materials and driving dynamics no longer stood out against fresher Camry/Accord/Mazda6 rivals in their final facelift year.
Six gas trims (SE, Eco, SEL, Sport, Limited, Limited 2.0T) plus separate Hybrid (SE, Limited) and Plug-in Hybrid (base, Limited) lineups gave genuinely wide choice from budget to loaded, and across powertrains.
2019 US sales of 87,466 fell below 100,000 for the first time since 2003, continuing a steep decline from a 2012 peak of over 230,000, as buyers shifted to SUVs — a clear slow/declining-seller pattern despite the redesign arriving later that year.
Hyundai's brand image in 2019 was solidly mainstream-value — strong warranty reputation and improving quality perception, but no aspirational halo, and the Sonata itself had lost cachet as sales slid.
With sedan demand sliding industry-wide and Sonata volume dropping sharply, Hyundai and its dealers commonly ran meaningful cash-back and low-APR financing offers on the outgoing generation rather than desperation-free MSRP selling.
2019 is the final model year of the 7th-generation (LF) Sonata's 2018 'New Rise' facelift — an aging platform on the eve of replacement, since the all-new 8th-generation (DN8) was unveiled the same year for the following model year.
The 2019 Sonata earned a genuine accolade — IIHS Top Safety Pick+ (with optional front crash prevention/headlights) plus a 5-star NHTSA overall rating — but reviewers generally placed it a rung below segment comparison-test winners like the Camry, Accord and Mazda6 on dynamics and cabin quality.
