The verdict

A mixed-report mid-size sedan, strong on ownership and held back by performance.

The redesigned 2020 Sonata undercuts the Camry and Accord on price — $26,430 for the volume SEL — while making adaptive cruise, lane centering and automatic emergency braking standard on every trim, backed by a 5-star NHTSA rating and Hyundai's 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty. The tradeoffs are real: a leisurely ~7.8-second 0-60, a front-wheel-drive-only lineup with no AWD, just 34.8 inches of rear legroom, and an 8-inch base touchscreen that feels small next to segment rivals. It's a strong buy for a value-focused commuter or small family who wants safety tech and low ownership costs more than speed, rear-seat room, or all-weather capability.

Jump to scores

Strengths

  • Segment-best warranty backing a low real-world ownership cost
  • 5-star crash rating with safety tech standard fleet-wide
  • Roomy front seats and an upscale-feeling cabin

  • Tight rear seat and marginal-rated headlights
  • Small standard screen, no wireless phone projection, no wireless updates

#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Instrumented tests of the 2.5L Sonata cluster around 7.5-8.2 seconds to 60 mph; no single authoritative manufacturer figure exists for this trim so a mid-range instrumented value is used.

Powertrain refinement74
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Reviewers of the redesigned DN8-generation Sonata singled out the new-generation 2.5L I4 for smooth, unobtrusive power delivery with no notable lag or coarseness, though outright thrust is modest for the segment.

Transmission behavior78
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The standard 8-speed automatic (replacing a 6-speed on the prior generation) shifts smoothly and promptly across the lineup; Hyundai paired even the turbo with this conventional automatic rather than a dual-clutch specifically to avoid low-speed clutch shudder.

AWD/4WD availability15
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 2020 Sonata (all engines, all trims) is front-wheel drive only in the US market; Hyundai did not offer an AWD option on this generation at launch.

Powertrain lineup breadth82
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

For 2020 the Sonata spans a naturally aspirated 2.5L, a 1.6L turbo, and a Hybrid (including the high-efficiency Hybrid Blue) — three distinct powertrains including an electrified option, ahead of most mainstream mid-size rivals at the time.

The redesigned (DN8) 2020 Sonata and Sonata Hybrid earned NHTSA's 5-star overall rating, Hyundai's own press release confirms 5 stars in side and rollover with 4 stars in frontal impact.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness68
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Crashworthiness is Good across small-overlap front (both sides), moderate-overlap front, roof strength and head restraints; the updated side test is Acceptable overall (Marginal for rear-passenger pelvis). IIHS Top Safety Pick applies only to Limited/Hybrid Limited, which carry the Good-rated LED projector headlights — the SE/SEL/SEL Plus volume trims (Marginal headlights) do not qualify for the award.

Standard ADAS suite breadth72
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Hyundai made forward-collision avoidance w/ pedestrian detection, lane keeping assist, lane-following centering, and adaptive cruise (Smart Cruise Control w/ Stop & Go) standard on every 2020 Sonata trim including the base SE. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic collision-avoidance, however, are reserved for SEL and above and are absent from the base trim.

Automatic emergency braking performance82
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

IIHS rated the standard Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Pedestrian Detection Superior in both vehicle-to-vehicle and vehicle-to-pedestrian (day) front crash prevention testing, avoiding or mitigating collisions across the test speed range; nighttime pedestrian performance was not separately reported for this generation.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage70
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Blind-Spot Collision-Avoidance Assist (with active braking intervention, not just alert) and Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist are standard from SEL up — three of the four gas trims — but absent on the base SE.

Lane keeping & centering82
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Lane Following Assist (centering) is standard across the range starting with 2020, and reviewers praised it for staying centered naturally without ping-ponging, even on winding roads — a notably confident implementation for the segment and era.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist75
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go is standard across the lineup and reviewers found it well-tuned and responsive to traffic changes, but the fuller Highway Driving Assist integration (combining ACC with lane centering into one system) is optional on SEL Plus and standard only on Limited — not on the SE/SEL volume trims.

Hands-free driving availability12
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 2020 Sonata's Highway Driving Assist is a hands-on Level 2 system requiring continuous steering-wheel torque; no hands-free highway driving mode was offered on any 2020 Sonata trim.

Headlight performance40
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

IIHS rated the LED reflector headlights on SE, SEL, SEL Plus and the Hybrid Blue/SEL trims Marginal; only the Limited and Hybrid Limited's LED projector headlights with high-beam assist rated Good. Since Marginal applies to every trim below Limited — the volume-trim outcome — this sits at the low end.

Reviewers praised thin windshield pillars and expansive side glass for good forward/side sightlines, but the coupe-like fastback roofline creates thick rear pillars and a high rear deck that hurt rear visibility, with one reviewer noting A-pillar crowding with the panoramic sunroof — a mixed outcome offset partly by the standard rearview camera.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability66
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The Sonata seats 5, so this item applies. IIHS rated the LATCH anchors Acceptable overall — lower anchors sit under easy-to-find hinged covers but are recessed deep in the seat bight, requiring some muscle to reach with hook-style connectors even though rigid-connector seats install easily; the three top-tether anchors are clearly marked and easy to use.

#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Standard five-passenger seating across every 2020 Sonata trim (SE, SEL, SEL Plus, Limited), no 4-seat or bench configuration offered.

Front headroom
40.0 in (38.3 in with panoramic sunroof)
100/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The DN8's lower, more fastback-like roofline trims front headroom versus the outgoing generation, and the optional panoramic sunroof on SEL Plus/Limited cuts nearly 2 inches further.

Front legroom
46.1 in
100/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

A longer 111.8 in wheelbase versus the prior generation gives the DN8 front seat generous legroom, among the roomier entries in the mid-size class.

Rear headroom
38.4 in (37.5 in with panoramic sunroof)
85/100
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Second-row headroom is squeezed by the sloping fastback roofline that defines the DN8's exterior design; taller rear passengers will notice it more than in boxier segment rivals.

Rear legroom
34.8 in
28/100
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Rear legroom is mid-pack for the segment — usable for adults on medium trips but short of class leaders like the Honda Accord or Toyota Camry.

Cargo/trunk volume
16.0 cu ft
60/100
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

16.0 cu ft of trunk space is a touch above the segment norm and Autoblog's luggage test found it swallowed a competitive number of suitcases for the class.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions58
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

A wide center console with a covered bin, a shelf ahead of the shifter (with an available wireless-charging pad on upper trims) and 60/40 split-folding rear seats cover the basics, but nothing here stands out as segment-leading storage innovation.

Seat comfort63
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Reviewers generally found the front seats supportive for daily use, with heated (SEL+) and ventilated (Limited) options improving long-trip comfort, though cushion shape draws no special praise versus segment leaders.

Ride quality56
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Multiple reviews describe the ride as composed but on the firm side rather than plush, a step behind softer-riding rivals like the Camry or Accord.

Cabin quietness50
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Road noise intrusion was called out across the 2020 Sonata lineup by multiple reviewers, keeping it below the segment's quietest entries despite an otherwise refined powertrain.

Climate & comfort features60
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Heated front seats and a heated steering wheel arrive at SEL, with ventilated front seats added on Limited, but no rear-seat climate vents or rear heated seats are offered on any 2020 gas trim.

#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

All-new 8th-gen (DN8) Sonata launched for MY2020 at a modest step up from the outgoing generation.

Volume-Trim Price
$26,430 (SEL, incl. destination); SEL Plus turbo ~$28,380, Limited ~$34,230
93/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

SEL is the volume trim, adding alloy wheels, blind-spot monitoring and larger touchscreen over SE for a modest premium.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$4,200 est. combined 5-yr scheduled maintenance + repair
74/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Hyundai's simple naturally-aspirated 2.5L four and long 10-yr powertrain warranty keep early-life repair exposure low; blended industry estimate.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~54-55% of MSRP retained after 5 years
65/100
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Depreciates slightly faster than the midsize-sedan average, consistent with Hyundai's traditionally softer resale versus Toyota/Honda.

Basic warranty
5 yr / 60,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
100/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Hyundai's standard basic warranty ties the class ceiling.

Powertrain warranty
10 yr / 100,000 mi powertrain, original owner (5 yr/60,000 mi if transferred)
100/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Hyundai's 10-year powertrain warranty is the longest in the mainstream midsize sedan class, well ahead of Toyota/Honda's 5-yr/60k coverage.

Complimentary maintenance & perks80
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Hyundai's Complimentary Maintenance program covers oil/filter changes, tire rotations and multi-point inspections for 3 years/36,000 miles on new vehicles purchased on or after Feb. 1, 2020, layered on top of 5-year/unlimited-mile roadside assistance included with the warranty — a more generous package than most mainstream rivals offer at this price.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$16,226 (≈$12,026 depreciation + $4,200 maintenance)
84/100
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

$26,430 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (54.5% retained, or about $14,404) leaves about $12,026 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,200 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $16,226 in total.

6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.50C+
Predicted reliability65
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The DN8 Sonata was a full redesign for 2020 on a new platform with a new Smartstream engine family, and Consumer Reports flagged the added first-year-of-redesign risk despite giving it an overall '3 of 5, Recommended' predicted reliability verbal rating; J.D. Power's owner-verified predicted reliability circle score also landed at the average tier.

Brand reliability track record71
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Hyundai's multi-year dependability standing is mixed across the studies that would cover a 2020-model-year car: the brand posted a top-tier 148 PP100 in J.D. Power's 2022 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study (3-year-old vehicles, i.e. 2020 MY), among the best mass-market brands, but the following year's VDS cycle showed Hyundai sliding to a below-average industry position.

Recall & TSB history66
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

NHTSA lists recalls for the 2020 Sonata covering a fuel tank check valve that can allow air ingress and tank expansion near hot exhaust components (moderate safety concern, inspect/replace fix), a Remote Smart Parking Assist software fix, and a minor tire-label misprint — typical recall activity for a first model year of a redesign, with nothing systemic or repeated, and importantly distinct from the earlier Theta II GDI engine-fire recall/settlement that covers 2011-2019 model-year Sonatas, not 2020.

Powertrain durability reputation54
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 2020 Sonata introduced Hyundai's new Smartstream 2.5L naturally-aspirated engine family, replacing the Theta II GDI engines tied to the fire-recall settlement, but as a brand-new design it had no long-term durability record at launch and has since drawn owner reports of oil consumption up to roughly 1 quart per 1,000 miles, carbon buildup on intake valves, and a fuel-injector batch defect affecting 2020-2023 Sonatas — an unproven-at-launch powertrain that has picked up real complaints rather than a clean track record.

Interior material quality78
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The DN8 redesign's cabin was widely praised at launch as a step change for the segment, with a class-competitive-to-leading 10.25-inch center display, available 12.3-inch digital cluster, and soft-touch surfaces well beyond what the outgoing generation or most mainstream mid-size rivals offered at the price.

Fit & finish68
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

No systemic assembly complaints surfaced for the 2020 Sonata beyond scattered owner reports (e.g. a burnt/chewed blind-spot wiring complaint, minor rattles); as a first-year redesign it sits at the typical solid-but-unproven tier rather than a standout initial-quality result.

Dealer & service network68
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Hyundai runs a dense, nationwide dealer network (roughly 850 US dealers) that is adequate but not class-leading in reach compared to Toyota/Honda, with service satisfaction generally mid-pack in mainstream-brand surveys.

Parts availability & repair cost73
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

As one of the best-selling mid-size sedans with a nameplate on sale since the 1980s, the Sonata has abundant OEM and aftermarket parts and mainstream, non-luxury repair pricing, backed by Hyundai's industry-leading 10-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty that caps early-ownership repair exposure.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Sonata's weakest categories.1.51D
Touchscreen size
8 in standard on SE/SEL (10.25 in on SEL Plus/Limited)
12/100
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The volume-selling SEL trim carries the standard 8-inch touchscreen; the larger 10.25-inch unit with embedded navigation is reserved for SEL Plus and Limited.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness66
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The all-new DN8 infotainment software was praised at launch as a real step up from the outgoing Sonata's dated system — clean menus and reasonably quick response — but it isn't singled out as class-leading against contemporaries like Mazda or Honda.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto52
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard across the entire 2020 Sonata lineup, but only via a wired USB connection — wireless projection was not offered on any trim this model year.

Voice control & native navigation52
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Built-in navigation is bundled only with the 10.25-inch screen on SEL Plus/Limited, and native voice recognition is functional but unremarkable, so most owners default to Siri/Google Assistant via phone projection instead.

Audio system quality68
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The optional Bose premium system uses 12 speakers with SurroundStage processing for a genuinely immersive sound field, a clear step above the adequate base stereo on lower trims.

Digital instrument cluster52
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

A configurable 12.3-inch digital cluster is available only on the Limited trim; SE through SEL Plus keep a conventional analog gauge cluster with a small trip-computer screen.

OTA update capability32
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 2020 Sonata's Bluelink navigation maps were updated manually via USB/SD download rather than wirelessly; Hyundai's true over-the-air update system was not rolled out to the Sonata until later model years.

Companion app & remote functions62
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Bluelink (standard from SEL up) covers remote start, lock/unlock, vehicle locate and alarm control via Bluetooth Low Energy and the MyHyundai app, and the Limited adds Hyundai's first Digital Key — but Digital Key works only with compatible Android phones, not iPhones, at launch.

Charging ports & device power58
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

USB ports are provided front and rear across the range, and a wireless charging pad (also doubling as the Digital Key NFC reader) is standard on SEL Plus/Limited and bundled into a Convenience Package on SEL — adequate but not class-leading in count or speed.

Keyless & remote access65
#2 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Proximity keyless entry with push-button start and remote start (via Bluelink, SEL and up) cover most of the range, and the Limited's Digital Key lets a compatible Android phone unlock and start the car — a genuine convenience step, though Android-only and top-trim-exclusive keeps it short of full-range coverage.

Camera & parking aids60
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

A rearview camera is standard fleet-wide, and the Surround View Monitor plus front/rear parking sensors are available as an optional safety package on upper trims — solid coverage but the 360-degree system isn't standard even on the range-topper.

Head-up display availability55
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

A head-up display is offered only on the range-topping Limited trim, not on the SE/SEL/SEL Plus volume trims that make up most sales.

8Use-Case FitOne of the Sonata's weakest categories.1.14D
Kid & car-seat practicality60
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Rear doors open wide for a fastback-styled sedan and the LATCH anchors are clearly marked, though IIHS rated the anchors only Acceptable for ease-of-use since the lower anchors sit deep in the seat bight — workable but not effortless daily car-seat duty.

Family safety package72
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Hyundai made forward-collision avoidance with pedestrian detection, lane-centering and adaptive cruise standard on every 2020 Sonata trim including the base SE, and NHTSA gave the car an overall 5-star rating — strong safety credentials at the affordable end, even though the Marginal-rated headlights keep the SE/SEL/SEL Plus out of IIHS's Top Safety Pick.

Family road-trip comfort54
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

16.0 cu ft of trunk space and a class-average 34.8 in of rear legroom handle a family's gear and grown kids reasonably well, but the lack of rear climate vents or rear USB charging on lower trims and reviewer-noted road noise take the edge off multi-hour trips.

Daily driving ease68
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Smart Cruise Control with Stop & Go and Lane Following Assist are standard and well-tuned for stop-and-go traffic, and the 8-speed automatic is smooth around town, making the Sonata an easy, low-fatigue daily driver despite a firmer-than-plush ride.

Commuting cost efficiency62
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The volume 2.5L SEL is EPA-rated 27 city/37 highway/31 combined mpg on regular gas — solidly average for a naturally-aspirated mid-size sedan and cheaper to run than most crossovers, but well short of the 50+ mpg Sonata Hybrid or class-leading Camry/Accord hybrid rivals.

Parking & maneuverability62
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

A roughly 36-foot curb-to-curb turning circle and a standard rearview camera make the Sonata manageable in tight city parking, though the optional 360-degree camera and front/rear sensors that ease the tightest spots are reserved for upper trims.

Work capability15
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The Sonata is a front-wheel-drive sedan with no published towing capacity and a fixed 16.0 cu ft trunk — Hyundai does not market or equip it for towing, hauling, or jobsite duty of any kind.

Durability for work duty25
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

While Hyundai's mechanical reliability reputation is reasonably solid generally, the Sonata's sedan-oriented interior materials and lack of any fleet/work trim mean it isn't positioned or built for hard commercial-use abuse the way a truck or fleet sedan (e.g. Camry LE fleet spec) is.

Jobsite & upfit practicality12
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

There is no bed, no onboard 120V power outlet, no tie-down provisions, and no upfit ecosystem of any kind — a conventional sedan trunk is the only cargo space offered.

Long-distance comfort & range60
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

A 32 mpg combined rating and a roughly 16-gallon tank give the 2.5L Sonata around 470-500 highway miles between fill-ups, and standard adaptive cruise with lane centering eases highway fatigue, but reviewer-noted road noise and a firm ride keep it from the segment's best long-haul cruisers.

Outdoor & adventure capability25
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 2020 Sonata is front-wheel-drive only in the US with no AWD option on the gas lineup, modest ground clearance, and no roof-rack provision — it is a pavement-bound commuter sedan with essentially no off-pavement or gear-hauling adventure capability.

Gear & luggage flexibility42
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

60/40 split-folding rear seats extend the 16.0 cu ft trunk for longer items like skis, but the fixed trunk opening and lack of any roof rail or hitch option cap how much bulky gear the Sonata can realistically swallow versus a wagon or SUV.

9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.08C
Handling & agility62
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Reviewers found the redesigned DN8 chassis composed and fairly nimble in corners, a genuine improvement over prior Sonatas, though it trails sportier mid-size rivals like the Mazda6 or Accord 2.0T in outright engagement.

Steering feel56
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The electric power steering is accurately weighted and communicative enough for confident daily driving, but reviewers consistently describe it as competent rather than involving, lacking real road feedback.

Braking confidence62
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

No instrumented stopping-distance outlier or specific brake complaint surfaced in period reviews of the base 2.5L Sonata, consistent with an unremarkable, adequately-tuned brake pedal typical of the segment.

Powertrain smoothness & response63
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The 2.5L four-cylinder paired with Hyundai's in-house 8-speed automatic shifts smoothly around town and on the highway with no major complaints about tip-in or hesitation, if without the punch of the optional 1.6L turbo.

Drivetrain noise & vibration55
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The naturally-aspirated 2.5L engine itself is reasonably unobtrusive, but multiple reviewers flagged overall cabin road noise that undercuts the sense of powertrain refinement at highway speed.

Turning circle
~35.9 ft curb-to-curb
68/100
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

A sub-36-foot turning circle is about average for a mid-size sedan, giving reasonably easy U-turns and parking-lot maneuvers.

Driving position & ergonomics66
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Power-adjustable seats, a clearly laid-out dash, and an available head-up display on Limited support a comfortable, well-sighted driving position, though the sloping roofline pinches rear headroom relevant to ingress/egress rather than the front seat itself.

Fun-to-drive factor46
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The base 2.5L Sonata is described as pleasant but forgettable to drive — competent and comfortable for the average shopper, but without the character or engagement that would draw an enthusiast (that role falls to the separate N Line/turbo models).

10Value & Market PositionOne of the Sonata's strongest categories.2.78B-
Standard equipment generosity80
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Even the base SE ships with an 8-inch touchscreen, Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, and a full suite of standard driver-assist tech (adaptive cruise control, forward collision-avoidance assist, lane-keep assist) that rivals like Camry and Accord charge extra for or reserve for higher trims.

Feature value per dollar75
#3 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The redesigned DN8 undercuts Camry and Accord on price while matching or beating them on tech and standard safety content, and the SEL Plus turbo adds meaningful power (180 hp 1.6T) for a modest step up — a strong bang-for-buck case even without a hybrid or AWD option yet.

Trim & configuration breadth65
#5 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Four well-spaced gas trims (SE/SEL/SEL Plus/Limited) plus a separate Hybrid line give reasonable choice, but there is no AWD, no V6 or high-performance variant, and the N Line turbo didn't arrive until MY2021 — a real gap versus Camry's AWD option and Accord's broader powertrain spread.

Sales popularity & market acceptance45
#6 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

The redesign generated positive press but didn't translate into a sales surge in its launch year — Sonata volume stayed well behind segment leaders Camry and Accord and was down double digits in early 2020, compounded by COVID-19 disruption and the broader sedan market's continued shift to SUVs.

Brand desirability & image60
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Hyundai's image has climbed steadily on quality perception and design confidence (the DN8's styling was widely praised), but it remains a value-mainstream brand without the aspirational pull or resale halo of Toyota/Honda.

Deals & incentive availability70
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

As a mainstream volume brand competing for share against Camry and Accord, Hyundai dealers typically offer meaningful incentives and low-APR financing on Sonata without needing desperation-level discounting.

Model freshness92
#1 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

2020 is the launch year of the all-new eighth-generation (DN8) Sonata on a new third-generation platform with a fully redesigned exterior, interior and tech suite — as fresh as a model year gets.

Critical reception & awards67
#4 of 6 Mid-Size CarsCompare all →

Reviewers praised the redesign's styling, cabin quality, tech and standard safety features, and it won a J.D. Power APEAL nod for design/performance satisfaction, but it wasn't the pick over Camry/Accord in driving-dynamics-focused comparison tests and didn't land a 10Best or NACTOY win.
