The verdict

A mixed-report mid-size luxury sedan, strong on efficiency and held back by performance.

The 2020 Lexus ES 300h is a quiet, supremely comfortable luxury sedan that returns 44 MPG combined on regular gas and holds about 60% of its value after five years — a combination nothing else in the mid-size luxury class could match at its $42,785 delivered price. It earns that reputation with a 5-star NHTSA rating, IIHS Top Safety Pick+, and the best three-year dependability record of any brand in J.D. Power's study of 2020 vehicles. The costs are pace and polish elsewhere: 215 total system horsepower means 8.1 seconds to 60 mph, there is no all-wheel drive at any price this model year, and the console touchpad running the 8-inch non-touch screen is the single most criticized thing about the car. Buy it to be soothed and to spend nothing; look elsewhere if you want to be entertained.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainThe ES's lowest-graded category.0.35F
Horsepower
215 hp combined (ES 300h hybrid); ES 350 V6 makes 302 hp
22/100
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2020 ES 300h pairs the 2.5-liter A25A-FXS four (176 hp) with Lexus Hybrid Drive for 215 hp total system output — modest for a mid-size luxury sedan, where rivals start near 250 hp.

Torque
163 lb-ft (2.5L gas engine); ES 350 V6 267 lb-ft
13/100
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lexus publishes 163 lb-ft for the ES 300h's gas engine and does not quote a combined hybrid torque figure; the traction motor adds instant low-speed pull that the number does not capture.

0–60 mph time
8.1 s (Lexus claim); 8.3 s instrumented by Edmunds
22/100
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The hybrid is tuned for economy, not urgency — 8.1 seconds is roughly two seconds behind the 302-hp ES 350 and well off the pace of turbocharged German rivals in this segment.

Powertrain refinement76
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Transitions between electric and gas running are essentially imperceptible and the car is notably quiet at cruise, but the four-cylinder gets audibly strained under full throttle — the classic Toyota hybrid trade-off, refined at 80% effort and coarse at 100%.

Transmission behavior74
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The planetary eCVT delivers seamless, step-free power and Sport mode adds simulated shift steps; reviewers report it avoids the worst CVT drone in normal driving, though it still flares to high revs when pushed.

AWD/4WD availability8
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2020 ES is front-wheel drive only across every trim and both powertrains — all-wheel drive did not reach the nameplate until the 2022 facelift, a real gap against E-Class, A6 and G80 rivals that offer or standardize AWD.

Powertrain lineup breadth62
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Two distinct powertrains for 2020 — a 302-hp 3.5L V6 and this 215-hp 2.5L hybrid — which covers the mainstream split between performance and economy and includes an electrified option, but there is no turbo four (the ES 250 arrived later), no PHEV and no EV.

2Efficiency & RangeThe ES's best-graded category.4.00A+
Combined fuel economy
44 MPG combined (ES 300h); ES 350 V6 rates 26 MPG
100/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

44 MPG combined is outstanding for a mid-size luxury sedan — 18 MPG better than the V6 ES 350 and unmatched by any European rival in the class in 2020.

City fuel economy
43 MPG city
100/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Typical of a Toyota/Lexus full hybrid, city economy nearly matches highway — the electric motor does most of the low-speed work and regenerative braking recovers stop-and-go energy.

Highway fuel economy
44 MPG highway
95/100
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

44 MPG highway is strong for a 3,700-lb luxury sedan; unusually for a hybrid it slightly exceeds the city figure, helped by the ES's low drag and Atkinson-cycle engine.

Driving range
581 mi (13.2-gal tank × 44 MPG combined)
80/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A modest 13.2-gallon tank keeps total range below what the economy figure suggests, but 581 miles still means roughly 40% more distance per fill than the 413-mile ES 350.

Estimated annual fuel cost
$1,400/yr at 15,000 mi (EPA); $2.36 to drive 25 miles
82/100
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

EPA's standard 15,000-mile estimate puts the ES 300h at $1,400 a year — $1,000 less than the ES 350, and the gap grows because the hybrid drinks regular rather than premium.

Fuel requirements92
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The ES 300h runs on regular 87-octane unleaded — unusual for a luxury-badged sedan, where premium is the norm — with no plug, no charging infrastructure and no special energy needs.

3SafetyGrades above the middle of the scale.3.16B
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (frontal 4, side 5, rollover 4)
100/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

NHTSA rated the 2020 ES 300h 4DR FWD 5 stars overall, with a 5-star side score and 4-star frontal and rollover sub-scores.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness89
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A 2020 Top Safety Pick+ with Good results in every crashworthiness test then run — small overlap both sides, moderate overlap, side, roof and head restraints — and awarded with no headlight qualifier, meaning the plus applies to the whole range rather than one option box.

Standard ADAS suite breadth73
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 is standard on every 2020 ES grade — AEB with pedestrian and daytime bicyclist detection, all-speed adaptive cruise, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing, road sign assist and auto high beams — but Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert is an option on the volume base ES 300h rather than standard, which is exactly the gap the middle band describes.

Automatic emergency braking performance74
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS front crash prevention is Superior vehicle-to-vehicle and Advanced for pedestrians — a strong daytime result, but the nighttime pedestrian test IIHS added in 2022 had not been run on this model year, so there is no verified dark-conditions performance to credit.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage58
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert is alert-only and, on the volume base ES 300h, has to be bought — it is a standalone option gated behind the Premium package, standard only on the uplevel grades. No rear cross-traffic braking and no safe-exit assist.

Lane keeping & centering68
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist and the then-new Lane Tracing Assist are standard on every grade and hold the car between clear highway markings, but the correction is deliberately gentle — an attention backstop rather than confident centering, and it wanders on faded lines.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist76
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

All-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with full stop-and-go is standard on every grade and works with Lane Tracing Assist as a competent highway pair; it lacks the curve-speed deceleration Lexus added to the ES later in the generation, and there is no named highway-assist mode above it.

Hands-free driving availability5
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No hands-free highway driving is offered on the 2020 ES at any grade or in any package; the suite tops out at hands-on Lane Tracing Assist.

Headlight performance73
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Every 2020 ES headlight variant rates at least Acceptable — enough for TSP+ with no headlight qualifier — but the volume base grade gets the single LED projector rated Acceptable, with the Good rating reserved for the optional curve-adaptive triple-beam LEDs.

Outward visibility68
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Forward and side sightlines are decent for a low-slung luxury sedan, but the steeply raked rear glass and thick C-pillars leave a real over-the-shoulder blind zone, and the two things that would compensate — blind-spot monitoring and the Panoramic View Monitor — are both options on the volume grade rather than standard.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability84
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Straight A's in the Cars.com Car Seat Check — lower anchors under easy removable covers, three clearly marked top tethers on the rear shelf, and enough legroom to install rear- and forward-facing seats without pushing the front occupants forward; three-across is the one thing it cannot do, as with any mid-size sedan.

4Space & ComfortGrades above the middle of the scale.2.97B-
Seating capacity
5 seats (2+3)
100/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The seventh-generation (XZ10) ES is a conventional five-seat sedan; the ES 300h hybrid battery sits under the rear bench rather than in the cabin, so seating is unchanged from the ES 350.

Front headroom
37.5 in (less with the available moonroof)
38/100
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Front headroom is 37.5 in, mid-pack for a mid-size sedan — the seventh-generation ES sits 0.2 in lower than the car it replaced, trading a little head space for a lower, wider stance.

Front legroom
42.4 in
60/100
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

42.4 in of front legroom is generous for the class, and the 2019-onward steering column adds 1.2 in more tilt and 1.6 in more telescoping range than the previous ES, widening the range of drivers it fits.

Rear headroom
37.4 in
60/100
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

37.4 in of second-row headroom is solid for a low-roofed sedan, and because the hybrid pack moved under the seat the ES 300h loses nothing to the ES 350 here.

Rear legroom
39.2 in
72/100
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The two-inch-longer GA-K wheelbase pushes rear legroom to 39.2 in, enough for adults on long trips and a clear strength against compact luxury rivals.

Cargo/trunk volume
16.7 cu ft — same as the non-hybrid ES 350
67/100
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Relocating the NiMH pack beneath the rear seat means the hybrid keeps the full 16.7 cu ft trunk, an unusually large figure for the segment and one of the ES 300h's real practical advantages over hybrid rivals that sacrifice trunk space.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions55
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Everyday storage is competent — a deep console bin, usable door pockets, underfloor side pockets in the trunk and an available Qi wireless charging tray — but there is no standout innovation, and on the hybrid the rear seatback is fixed with no full pass-through, so long items simply do not fit.

Seat comfort82
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Long-haul comfort in both rows is the ES's core competence: firm, supportive front chairs without aggressive bolsters, and a rear bench reviewers rate equally comfortable, with 10-way power standard and 14-way power plus heating and suction-type ventilation available.

Ride quality85
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Isolation is the point of this car and it delivers — a well-damped, unruffled ride over broken pavement that leads the mid-size luxury field for plushness, with the softer non-F-Sport suspension the hybrid always wears.

Cabin quietness78
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Acoustic side glass and thorough sound deadening make road and tire noise close to class-best, and the hybrid runs silently at low speed; the one blemish is highway wind noise that reviewers found louder than a Lexus should be.

Climate & comfort features70
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Dual-zone climate with rear vents, an available heated wheel, heated and ventilated front seats, a power rear sunshade and app-based remote climate cover the important bases, but almost all of it sits in Premium/Luxury packages rather than standard, and there are no rear climate controls or heated rear seats on US cars.

5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.20C
Base MSRP
$42,785 (ES 300h, incl. $1,025 DPH); ES lineup opens at $40,925 for the ES 350
37/100
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Entry price of the hybrid configuration this scorecard describes; the ES 300h carries roughly a $1,860 premium over the gas ES 350 entry point, and the 2020 hybrid range tops out at $46,685 for Ultra Luxury.

Volume-Trim Price
~$44,500 (ES 300h base with Premium Package, as typically equipped); trim range $42,785–$46,685
40/100
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The plain ES 300h is the volume hybrid trim, but it is rarely sold stripped — heated and ventilated front seats, blind spot monitoring and navigation all sit behind the Premium Package and option boxes, which puts a typical retail car near $44,500, just under the Luxury trim's $45,690 delivered price.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$4,800 over 5 yr / 60,000 mi (dealer-rate scheduled service, tires and brakes included)
65/100
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Projected on the dealer-rate basis this catalog applies across vehicles — scheduled service plus tires, brakes and unscheduled repairs — scaled to 2020-2025 prices; the ES 300h is a genuinely cheap luxury sedan to keep, and owner-reported trackers land well below this, so treat the figure as a conservative ceiling rather than a typical bill.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~60% of MSRP retained at 5 yr (39.6% depreciation)
85/100
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Resale is the ES's single strongest ownership attribute — it holds roughly 60% of its value after five years against a hybrid luxury midsize class that loses 44.9%, and the 2020 car was explicitly recognized for low projected cost to own when new.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
50/100
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard Lexus basic coverage — a year longer than mainstream 3/36 terms and level with Cadillac and the German luxury brands in 2020, but short of Genesis and Jaguar's 5/60.

Powertrain warranty
6 yr / 70,000 mi powertrain; hybrid system 8 yr / 100,000 mi and hybrid battery 10 yr / 150,000 mi (new for 2020)
20/100
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 6-year powertrain term is unremarkable and well behind Hyundai/Kia and Genesis's 10/100, but 2020 is the first model year in which a Lexus hybrid buyer gets 10 years / 150,000 miles on the battery pack — an extension announced specifically for MY2020 that transfers to subsequent owners and directly de-risks the part buyers worry about most.

Complimentary maintenance & perks67
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Included maintenance is short — the first two scheduled visits inside the first year — but the surrounding package is better than that implies: roadside assistance runs a full four years with no mileage cap, Enform Safety Connect/Remote/Service Connect trials were lengthened for 2020, and this is the model year that gained the decade-long hybrid battery cover. It sits above Cadillac's single free visit and below the multi-year maintenance programs Genesis, BMW and Volvo offered in 2020.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$22,422 (≈$17,622 depreciation + $4,800 maintenance)
67/100
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

$44,500 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (60.4% retained, or about $26,878) leaves about $17,622 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,800 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $22,422 in total.

6Reliability & QualityOne of the ES's strongest categories.3.80A
Predicted reliability89
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2020 ES is graded on real three-year field data rather than a forecast, and that data is excellent: the J.D. Power 2023 Vehicle Dependability Study surveyed original owners of 2020 model-year vehicles at three years and ranked Lexus highest of all brands at 133 PP100 against a 186 industry average, while RepairPal rates the ES300h 4.5/5.0, third of 31 luxury midsize cars, with unscheduled shop visits of 0.4 per year versus 0.6 for the class. Held out of the very top of the band because Consumer Reports' owner survey for this model year logs a recurring brake cluster (premature pad and rotor wear, pulsation, regenerative-braking complaints) and CR's numeric score is paywalled and could not be read directly.

Brand reliability track record90
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lexus is the reference point for US dependability across the window that matters to a 2020 car: it took first place among all brands in the J.D. Power VDS that surveyed this exact model year at three years, and it has sat in Consumer Reports' top three brands continuously through the period. A couple of points are withheld because CR's 2020 ranking had Lexus third at 71 points behind Mazda (83) and Toyota (74) rather than outright first.

Recall & TSB history72
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2020 ES 300h carries two NHTSA campaigns and, unlike the trivial software recalls on later model years of this generation, both involve hardware replacement: an engine-block casting porosity defect whose remedy is replacing the engine, and a shared Toyota-family occupant-classification sensor short that can prevent the passenger airbag from deploying. Neither is systemic to the model — the engine recall covered roughly 1,100 ES 300h units, about 600 of them still in dealer inventory, and was caught inside the first months of production — so this lands in the upper half of the 'typical activity' band rather than the clean-record band the 2023 car earns.

Powertrain durability reputation88
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The ES 300h pairs the 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four with Toyota's planetary hybrid transaxle for 215 total system horsepower — the most field-proven electrified powertrain family in the world, shared with the high-volume Camry, Avalon and RAV4 hybrids, with no clutch packs or torque converter to wear and no chronic failure mode at high mileage. Marked down from the later years of this generation for the 2020-specific engine-block porosity defect: the population was small and the remedy complete, but an engine-replacement recall against this exact model year and engine is a real blemish on an otherwise unimpeachable powertrain record.

Interior material quality80
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Reviewers of the 2020 ES describe top-shelf materials for the price — supple NuLuxe or leather upholstery, soft-touch surfaces throughout the touch zones, detailed contrast stitching and finishes Car and Driver calls 'first-rate'. It stays a rung below the segment's material benchmarks because the Camry-derived GA-K architecture still shows in harder plastics in low-touch areas, and the German rivals push harder on visual richness and metal content.

Fit & finish87
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Assembly consistency is the ES's strongest quality attribute and 2020 is the second year of the seventh generation on an unchanged body with only minor feature additions, so early-production variation was already settled — reviewers report tight panel gaps, damped switchgear and no flimsy or wobbly trim. Scored a shade below the mature years of this generation because Lexus's 2020 initial-quality standing (159 PP100) was merely above the industry average rather than class-leading, with the pre-facelift Remote Touch multimedia interface a recurring complaint.

Dealer & service network88
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lexus runs roughly 240 US rooftops — thinner on the ground than BMW or Mercedes-Benz and far thinner than parent Toyota — but it was the top-rated luxury brand for dealer-service satisfaction in the J.D. Power study contemporary with this model year and has stayed at or near the top since. That satisfaction record outweighs the modest density and places it above the German rivals in this segment.

Parts availability & repair cost84
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The ES 300h shares its GA-K platform, 2.5-liter engine and hybrid transaxle with the high-volume Camry, Camry Hybrid and Avalon Hybrid, so mechanical parts are abundant, cheap by luxury standards and serviceable by independent shops — a structural advantage over the dealer-dependent German rivals. It sits below a mainstream Toyota because luxury-specific trim, glass, lighting and body panels still carry premium pricing, and at six model years old the hybrid battery is the one component with real replacement exposure.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the ES's weakest categories.1.53D
Touchscreen size
8.0 in standard; 12.3 in with the navigation package
12/100
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The volume ES 300h leaves the factory with the 8.0-inch center display; the 12.3-inch widescreen arrives only with the navigation package. Neither is a touchscreen in 2020 — both are driven by the console Remote Touch pad, which the 2022 facelift finally replaced with a touch-capable unit.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness40
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The screen is crisp and Lexus keeps real Menu and Back buttons, but the Remote Touch trackpad is the single most criticized thing about this car — imprecise on the move, easy to overshoot, and the display is mounted too far away to touch instead.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto60
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

2020 is the year Lexus completed the pairing — Apple CarPlay carried over and Android Auto became standard on ES models built from fall 2019 — but both are wired only; wireless projection did not reach the ES until later in the generation.

Voice control & native navigation55
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The embedded voice system is command-word driven rather than natural language, and native navigation is an option, not standard — most ES buyers on the base display simply run Maps or Waze through CarPlay/Android Auto instead. Lexus Enform Dynamic Navigation does add cloud map, route and POI data when the 12.3-inch nav is fitted.

Audio system quality80
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The standard Lexus Premium Audio system is a genuinely good listen in an unusually quiet cabin, and the optional 17-speaker, 1,800-watt Mark Levinson PurePlay setup is among the better factory systems at any price.

Digital instrument cluster52
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The ES 300h runs an analog-style hybrid system indicator and speedometer flanking a colour multi-information display — partial digital, not a configurable full-digital cluster. The LFA-inspired moving-ring digital meter is an F SPORT item, and F SPORT is not offered on the hybrid.

OTA update capability46
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

There is no whole-vehicle over-the-air software updating on a 2020 Lexus — the only cloud-delivered content is map and POI data through Enform Dynamic Navigation, and that requires the optional navigation system; base-display cars get nothing over the air at all.

Companion app & remote functions60
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Lexus app covers the core set — remote start and climate, lock/unlock, vehicle locate, vehicle health and Safety Connect emergency assistance — with a 36-month trial on all 2020 cars. After that it is pay-per-service, and there is no phone-as-key.

Charging ports & device power48
#9 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Port provision is dated rather than sparse: USB-A only across the car with nothing in USB-C, two ports up front plus a 12-volt outlet, a Qi wireless charging pad confined to option packages, and no household AC outlet.

Keyless & remote access68
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Smart Key proximity entry with push-button start is standard, fob and app remote start are both available during the three-year connected-services trial, and 2020 added standard power-folding mirrors on most grades — but there is no digital/phone key and no hands-free trunk on a sedan.

Camera & parking aids60
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A backup camera is standard as federally required; the four-camera Panoramic View Monitor, front and rear clearance/parking sonar and Intuitive Parking Assist with automatic braking all sit in upper packages, and there is no automated parking manoeuvre.

Head-up display availability62
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lexus offers a large 10-inch colour head-up display that it claims has the biggest viewable area in the luxury class, showing speed, speed limits, shift position, lane warnings and navigation — but it is an upper-package option, absent from the trims most ES 300h buyers take.

8Use-Case FitOne of the ES's weakest categories.1.73C-
Kid & car-seat practicality70
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Car-seat installation is genuinely easy — Cars.com graded the ES an A across every seat type — and the 16.7 cu ft trunk swallows a stroller, but a low-slung sedan means more bending to buckle a toddler, and the hybrid's fixed rear seatback removes the fold-through trick that helps with bulky family gear.

Family safety package82
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Crash performance is top-tier and Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 — pre-collision with pedestrian and daytime cyclist detection, lane departure with steering assist, lane tracing, all-speed radar cruise, road sign assist — is standard on every ES including the base hybrid. The gap is blind-spot monitoring, which costs extra on the entry car.

Family road-trip comfort74
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Four adults travel well — 39.2 in of rear legroom, comfortable rear cushions, rear vents, an available power sunshade, a quiet cabin and a full-size trunk that stays full-size in the hybrid. What is missing is rear-seat amenities: no rear climate controls, no rear entertainment, no rear USB fast charging.

Daily driving ease85
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

This is what the ES 300h is built for: silent electric creep in stop-and-go, a hybrid transaxle with no shift shock, light controls, excellent isolation and standard all-speed adaptive cruise with lane tracing for the crawling commute. Fatigue is about as low as a car gets.

Commuting cost efficiency86
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

44 MPG combined on regular unleaded is extraordinary for a mid-size luxury sedan — roughly $1,400 a year at 15,000 miles, where premium-fuel German rivals run near double — and the Toyota hybrid system is gentle on brakes and consumables.

Parking & maneuverability62
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

At 195.9 in long with a 38 ft turning circle the ES is a big car to thread through a city, and rearward visibility over the high tail is only fair; a standard backup camera helps, but the surround-view monitor and parking sonar that would really help are option-package items.

Work capability12
#7 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lexus publishes no tow rating for the US-market ES, the 300h is front-wheel drive with a 215 hp hybrid system sized for economy rather than load, and the payload is a trunk. There is no work mission this car serves.

Durability for work duty42
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The mechanical package is the exception to the rule here — Toyota's hybrid transaxle and A25A-FXS four have a long fleet and livery record for surviving high mileage cheaply. Everything around it is wrong for work: leather and soft-touch surfaces, no washable trim, and a luxury body that punishes abuse.

Jobsite & upfit practicality8
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No onboard AC power, no tie-downs beyond a trunk net, no roof rails, no factory hitch, no upfit ecosystem — and on the hybrid not even a folding rear seat to pass long material through.

Long-distance comfort & range86
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A 581-mile EPA range on regular fuel, seats good for hours in both rows, class-leading suppression of road noise and standard all-speed radar cruise with lane tracing make this one of the best interstate tools in the segment. The only marks against it are highway wind noise and a mediocre 13.2-gallon tank offset by the economy.

Outdoor & adventure capability12
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2020 ES is front-wheel drive only — AWD did not reach the ES until the following model year — with sedan ground clearance, no roof rails, no tow rating and no camping provisions. It is a pavement car.

Gear & luggage flexibility30
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The trunk itself is excellent — 16.7 cu ft, a low 28-inch lift-over and underfloor side pockets — but flexibility is near zero on the hybrid: the rear seatback is fixed with structure blocking a full pass-through, so skis, flat-pack furniture or a bike are simply out.

9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.03C
Handling & agility62
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The GA-K platform gave the seventh-generation ES a genuinely stiffer, better-balanced body than its predecessor, and reviewers describe it as tidy and confidence-inspiring — but it is tuned for comfort, rolls in corners and, unlike the ES 350, the hybrid cannot be had with the F SPORT adaptive dampers.

Steering feel52
#8 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Accurate enough to place the car precisely, but the electric assist is light and numb with essentially no feedback; Sport mode adds weight without adding information. This is the weakest part of the way the ES 300h drives.

Braking confidence55
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Stopping power and fade resistance are fine for the mission, but the regenerative-to-friction handover is poorly blended — testers repeatedly describe a clunky, grabby transition that makes smooth stops harder than they should be in a car this refined.

Powertrain smoothness & response76
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The hybrid transaxle delivers seamless, shift-free progress with imperceptible engine start-stop in normal driving and clean electric pull-away — its limits are a cold-start clatter and the CVT flaring under hard throttle rather than any roughness in everyday use.

Drivetrain noise & vibration68
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Near-silent at town speeds and unobtrusive at a cruise, with no vibration through the controls; the four-cylinder does make itself heard when the eCVT holds revs for a hard merge, and there is a cold-start rattle, so it falls short of the V6's polish.

Turning circle
38.0 ft curb-to-curb
33/100
#4 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A 38-foot curb-to-curb circle is ordinary for a 196-inch front-drive sedan — workable but no better than the class, and it makes three-point turns in tight urban parking a real manoeuvre.

Driving position & ergonomics76
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2019-onward ES took the LS steering column with 1.2 in more tilt and 1.6 in more telescoping travel, and pairs it with 10-way power seats standard (14-way available), a low cowl and good forward sightlines — a driving position that suits a wide range of body sizes. The console-mounted Remote Touch pad is the ergonomic blemish.

Fun-to-drive factor42
#10 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The ES 300h is deliberately an appliance in the best sense — quiet, effortless and utterly undemanding — but there is no reward in taking the long way home: 8.1 seconds to 60 mph, numb steering, no soundtrack and no F SPORT option on the hybrid.

10Value & Market PositionOne of the ES's strongest categories.3.21B+
Standard equipment generosity71
#6 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Every 2020 ES ships with the full Lexus Safety System+ 2.0 suite, LED headlights, a moonroof, power front seats, NuLuxe upholstery, an 8-inch display and 10-speaker audio at $42,785 — content the German midsize rivals bundled into option packages on cars starting well above it. The catch is what is missing: heated and ventilated seats, blind spot monitoring and navigation are all extras, and Android Auto only reached cars built from October 2019.

Feature value per dollar82
#3 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

This is the ES's defining strength and 2020 is close to its high-water mark — a quiet, properly finished luxury cabin with 44 MPG combined and class-best resale for a delivered price under $43,000, when an E-Class or 5 Series started roughly $12,000 higher. What the money does not buy is pace or involvement: 215 system horsepower and a CVT make the hybrid a cruiser, not a driver's car.

Trim & configuration breadth66
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2020 hybrid lineup is the narrowest part of the ES proposition: three trims — base, Luxury and Ultra Luxury — spanning $42,785 to $46,685, with no F SPORT variant for the hybrid and no all-wheel drive anywhere in the 2020 ES range at any price. Package flexibility on the base car partly compensates, but a buyer wanting a sportier hybrid or AWD had to wait for the 2021/2022 cars.

Sales popularity & market acceptance80
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The ES was the best-selling luxury sedan in the United States in 2020 and remained the volume backbone of the Lexus car line. The 15.7% year-over-year drop looks poor in isolation but is a pandemic-year figure against 2019's generation-high, and the model recovered the following year while the segment as a whole kept shrinking.

Brand desirability & image76
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lexus carries real equity in dependability, dealer experience and resale — the qualities that make an ES easy to own and easy to sell — and the residual data bears that out directly. It is less aspirational than Mercedes or BMW, and the ES in particular reads as the conservative, comfort-first choice rather than an object of desire.

Deals & incentive availability72
#5 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lexus normally discounts lightly, which usually makes this the ES's weakest value lever — but 2020 was the exception. The pandemic-relief programs put 0% APR for 60 months on new 2019 and 2020 Lexus models with payment-deferral options and unusually soft lease rates, so a 2020 ES buyer had access to financing support the same car would never see in a normal year.

Model freshness88
#1 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

2020 is the second year of the seventh-generation (XZ10) ES launched for 2019 on the then-new GA-K platform — about as fresh as this nameplate gets, with a current chassis, a current design and no redesign risk on the horizon. The year even added connectivity content rather than coasting, and the facelift was still two model years away.

Critical reception & awards78
#2 of 10 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2020 ES collected the recognition that matters to a mainstream luxury buyer — KBB's luxury-car Best Buy, its #1 luxury midsize ranking, a cost-to-own award and IIHS Top Safety Pick+ — but reviewers stop short of calling it the class pick, marking it down consistently for the touchpad infotainment and uninvolving handling.
