The verdict
A capable mid-size luxury sedan, strong on efficiency and held back by performance.
The 2024 Lexus ES 300h is the quiet, dependable, cheap-to-run luxury sedan — 44 MPG combined on regular gas, about $1,400 a year in fuel, a 581-mile tank, and a reliability record that leads the entire luxury class. It opened at $44,590 with destination, roughly $10,000–$15,000 under a comparably equipped BMW 5 Series or Mercedes E-Class, and it spends that money on ride comfort and silence rather than speed or screens. The trade-offs are real and easy to check on a test drive: 8.1 seconds to 60 mph, front-wheel drive only on the hybrid with no AWD option at any price, a small 13.9-cubic-foot trunk whose rear seatbacks do not fold, and an 8-inch touchscreen on the base car. Buy it if you want a car that never bothers you; look elsewhere if you want it to entertain you or haul your gear.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Reliability that leads the luxury class outright
- Running costs a German rival can't touch
- One of the most comfortable, quietest cabins at any price near this
What holds it back
- Slow, and it sounds strained when you hurry it
- No all-wheel drive on the hybrid, at any price
- A small trunk that doesn't open up

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe ES's lowest-graded category.0.41F
The 2024 ES 300h pairs a 2.5L Atkinson-cycle A25A-FXS four (176 hp) with a hybrid transaxle for 215 hp total system output, unchanged for 2024.
Lexus publishes engine torque of 163 lb-ft for the ES 300h's A25A-FXS and does not quote a combined system torque figure, as is standard for Toyota/Lexus planetary hybrids.
Lexus's own figure for the ES 300h is 8.1 seconds to 60 mph, a mid-pack result that reflects the hybrid's economy-first tuning rather than the V6 model's pace.
In everyday driving the ES 300h is among the smoothest and quietest hybrids on sale — EV pull-away is silent and the gas-to-electric handoffs are imperceptible — but the Atkinson four goes coarse and loud when asked for full throttle.
The planetary eCVT never hunts for gears and delivers power without a shift shock, but it holds high revs under acceleration — the familiar hybrid drone — which is the main dynamic complaint against the car.
The ES 300h is front-wheel drive on every trim with no AWD option — all-wheel drive in the 2024 ES lineup exists only on the non-hybrid ES 250, a different powertrain entirely.
Three genuinely distinct powertrains — 2.5L four with AWD, 3.5L V6, and the 2.5L hybrid — cover mainstream luxury-sedan needs, but there is no plug-in hybrid or EV variant and no performance engine above the V6.
2Efficiency & RangeThe ES's best-graded category.4.00A+
EPA rates the 2024 ES 300h at 44 MPG combined on regular gasoline, unchanged from the prior year and the best figure in the ES lineup by a wide margin.
The hybrid system's electric launch and regenerative braking put city economy within one MPG of the highway figure — typical strong stop-and-go behavior for a Toyota/Lexus hybrid.
44 MPG on the highway is strong for a mid-size luxury sedan, helped by the Atkinson-cycle engine and low drag, though hybrids gain less at steady cruise than in town.
A 13.2-gallon tank and 44 MPG combined give an EPA total range of 581 miles, well beyond most luxury sedans despite the modest tank size.
EPA's standard 15,000-mile estimate puts the ES 300h at $1,400 a year — low for the luxury class because it combines hybrid economy with a regular-fuel requirement.
The ES 300h runs on regular 87-octane unleaded with no plug, charger or premium-fuel penalty — unusual in a luxury sedan and a direct saving against rivals that require premium.
3SafetyGrades above the middle of the scale.3.31B+
NHTSA rated the 2024 ES 300h FWD — the exact hybrid configuration being scored — at the maximum 5 stars overall, with 5 stars in every side-impact measure. The 4-star frontal result is held down by the passenger-side frontal (4 stars against the driver's 5), and the 4-star rollover reflects a 10.5% rollover probability typical of a front-drive sedan.
The ES carries a Top Safety Pick that IIHS lists as covering 2023-24 models, but it did not earn a 2024-cycle award — and the reason is a real weakness rather than a paperwork gap. Under the tougher updated protocols the ES rates only Marginal in the updated moderate overlap front test (rear-passenger restraints and dummy kinematics Marginal, rear chest Acceptable) and Acceptable in the updated side test (structure Acceptable, rear passenger pelvis Marginal). Original-protocol results are uniformly Good, so this is specifically about rear-seat occupant protection in the newer, harder tests, which is enough to pull it below the top band despite the award badge.
Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 is standard on every 2024 ES trim — pre-collision with day/low-light pedestrian and cyclist detection, intersection turn assist, full-speed-range dynamic radar cruise, lane departure alert with steering assist, lane tracing assist, road sign assist and automatic high beams — and Lexus additionally makes Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert standard rather than trim-locked. Nothing in the core AEB/ACC/LKA/BSM/RCTA set is paywalled to an upper trim, which is what places it in the top band; it sits a few points below the newer LSS+ 3.0 cars because 2.5 lacks proactive driving assist, front cross-traffic alert and the emergency driving stop system.
The ES posts a Good overall IIHS pedestrian front crash prevention rating with the standard system, and the underlying test detail is stronger than the summary letter suggests: it avoided the crossing child at both 12 and 25 mph in daylight, and avoided the crossing adult at night at both speeds on high beams AND on low beams — nighttime pedestrian performance is where most systems in this segment give ground. Scored in the top band, held short of the 90s only because IIHS no longer publishes a vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention rating for this vehicle, so the car-to-car half of the picture is unverified.
Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert is standard on every trim rather than optional, which is better than the middle band describes, but the coverage is alert-only: rear automatic braking is an option rather than standard equipment, so the car warns about cross traffic without intervening, and no safe-exit function is offered on this generation. Trailer-aware coverage is irrelevant in this segment.
Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist plus Lane Tracing Assist is standard, and reviewers driving the 2024 car describe it holding the centre of the lane confidently through curves rather than pinging between the markings — better than the Toyota-badged implementations of the same generation of software. It stays below the top band because lane tracing only operates with the radar cruise engaged and the system trails the best German and Genesis centering for smoothness on poorly marked roads.
Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control is standard, works down to a stop and back in traffic, and the Lexus calibration slows smoothly on approach rather than braking late. It lands just below the top band because the combined highway assist is strictly hands-on with no lane-change or highway-pilot integration — DRCC plus lane tracing is a competent pair, not a unified highway assist.
No hands-free highway driving is offered on the 2024 ES at any trim or option level. Lexus Teammate Advanced Drive — the brand's hands-free system — was confined to the LS 500h AWD for 2024, and the ES tops out at hands-on lane tracing with radar cruise. Scored in the bottom band accordingly, with the few points above zero reflecting that the hands-on system it does have is standard equipment.
IIHS rates both headlight variations offered on the ES as Good — the base LED projector setup on all trims and the Triple Beam LED package — so a buyer cannot end up with a sub-Good lamp regardless of trim, which is exactly the top-band condition. High-beam assist is included on both and earns the IIHS credit; the systems are not curve-adaptive and the Triple Beam variant draws a "some glare" note, which is why this stops short of the low 90s.
Reviewers consistently describe the seventh-generation ES as having good outward vision for a low-slung luxury sedan — a low cowl and a conventional three-box greenhouse keep the forward and quarter views usable, and the raked rear glass costs less over-the-shoulder visibility than the fastback shapes that replaced it. Camera compensation is only partial on the volume trim: a rear camera and blind-spot monitor are standard but the Panoramic View Monitor is restricted to the Ultra Luxury trims, so a mid-trim buyer gets alerts rather than a bird's-eye view.
IIHS rates the ES Good for LATCH ease of use — the top rating — with two complete outboard anchor sets plus a tether-only centre position, the standard and best-practical layout for a mid-size sedan. Generous rear legroom means a rear-facing seat fits without shoving the front passenger forward. It is not higher because three-across remains impractical: the centre position borrows nothing and offers a tether only, which is the segment-wide limit rather than an ES failing.
4Space & ComfortGrades above the middle of the scale.2.80B-
The 2024 ES 300h seats five in a conventional two-row layout on every grade from base through Ultra Luxury, the maximum for a mid-size sedan.
37.5 inches is mid-pack for a sedan, and because the power moonroof is standard equipment on every 2024 ES grade there is no sunroof-delete number to quote instead.
42.4 inches is generous for the class and puts the ES's long 113.0-inch wheelbase to the driver's benefit; front seats are 10-way power on every grade and 14-way for the driver from Luxury up.
The ES 300h gives up a few tenths of rear headroom and shoulder room to the gas ES, and the sharply raked roofline means reviewers flag headroom rather than legroom as the back seat's limiting dimension for tall adults.
Roughly 39.2 inches is one of the roomiest back seats in the mid-size luxury class, a direct consequence of the 113.0-inch wheelbase, and it is the reason the ES has always read as a near-full-size car from the rear bench.
13.9 cubic feet is below par for a mid-size sedan and is the ES's clearest packaging weakness. The hybrid battery sits under the rear seat rather than in the trunk, so the 300h loses nothing to the ES 350 — but neither car offers folding rear seatbacks to extend the space, only a pass-through on some grades.
The post-refresh console is well organised — a hidden compartment ahead of the shifter, a console bin holding two USB-C ports and a 12-volt outlet, a vertical wireless charging slot, and a rear fold-down armrest with cupholders and USB for back-seat passengers — but there is no standout storage idea, the wireless charger is locked inside the Premium Package, and fixed rear seatbacks mean nothing long passes through from the trunk on most grades.
Every 2024 ES gets 10-way power front seats that reviewers describe as soft, well-padded and supportive without aggressive bolsters, and the back seat is comfortable and lounge-like for two adults. It stops short of the top band only because heating and ventilation sit in the Premium Package rather than standard equipment, and the rear bench is flat by luxury-flagship standards.
Ride comfort is the ES's headline competence — soft without float, and reviewers of the 2024 car reach straight for the word 'supremely' when describing how it dispatches broken pavement. Body control is better than the plush tune suggests, with performance dampers from Luxury up and an F SPORT-tuned Adaptive Variable Suspension on F SPORT Handling; only hard cornering exposes the lean that the comfort calibration buys.
The hybrid is the quietest ES — it pulls away and crawls on electricity with the engine off, and Lexus layers on LS-derived sound deadening plus available noise-reduction wheels — and reviewers call it one of the most serene cabins at the price. What keeps it out of the top band is the same thing that spoils it: when the 2.5-liter four does fire up under load it is audible and coarse against an otherwise library-quiet background.
Dual-zone automatic climate with air filtration and a smog sensor is standard, and the ES's ventilated seats are unusually effective because they draw conditioned air from the climate system rather than just circulating cabin air — but heated and ventilated front seats plus the heated wheel all live in the Premium Package rather than standard equipment, the power rear sunshade starts at Luxury, and rear passengers get vents only, not their own climate zone or seat heating.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the ES's weakest categories.1.73C-
This scorecard describes the hybrid configuration, so the entry point is the base ES 300h at $43,440 plus Lexus's $1,150 delivery/processing/handling charge. The gas ES 250 AWD and ES 350 both open $1,400 lower at $42,040 + destination, which is what Lexus quotes as the ES line's $43,190 starting price.
ES volume sits at the base grade optioned with the Premium Package — heated/ventilated front seats, heated steering wheel, driver memory, wireless charging and rear parking sensors — rather than at the stripped base or the $52,330 Ultra Luxury. Base $43,440 + $2,790 package + $1,150 destination lands just under $47,400.
The ES 300h's mechanicals are a mature, high-volume Toyota hybrid unit, and regenerative braking materially extends brake life — CarEdge puts ES 300h five-year maintenance and repair costs roughly $2,200 below the luxury-sedan average, with a better-than-segment probability of avoiding a major repair. The figure stays above the mechanically-related Camry/Crown to reflect Lexus dealer labor rates and luxury-grade parts.
The ES is one of the strongest residual holders in the luxury sedan class and the hybrid is the most in-demand version of it, but published estimates disagree widely, so this sits between the optimistic transaction-based figures and KBB's more conservative sticker-based one. The real-world checkpoint supports the middle: a 2024 ES 300h has given up only about 19% of its value two years in.
Lexus's brand-wide basic coverage, unchanged for 2024. It matches the German luxury standard and beats parent-brand Toyota's 3 yr / 36,000 mi, but no luxury brand's basic term is a differentiator at four years.
Scored on the standard powertrain term for consistency with the rest of the dataset, where hybrid-specific coverage is not substituted. For an ES 300h buyer the longer hybrid-component and battery terms are the coverage that actually matters, and they are noted in displayValue — they just aren't what this item measures.
A mixed package: complimentary scheduled maintenance covers only the first two visits at 6 mo / 5,000 mi and 12 mo / 10,000 mi — shorter than parent-brand ToyotaCare's 2 yr / 25,000 mi — but roadside assistance runs a class-leading 4 years with no mileage cap, and Lexus adds connected-service trials plus loaner and concierge treatment at the dealer. Real coverage, well short of Genesis's three years of included maintenance with valet pickup.
$47,400 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (56% retained, or about $26,544) leaves about $20,856 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,100 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $25,956 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the ES's strongest categories.4.00A+
The 2024 ES is the sixth model year of the seventh generation (XZ10, 2019-2025) and a minor-change carry-over — no new platform, powertrain or electrical architecture to introduce first-year faults. Consumer Reports rates the 2024 ES Hybrid "more reliable than other cars from the same model year," and RepairPal places the ES 300h 3rd of 31 luxury mid-size cars at 4.5/5.0. Scored above the 2026 ES (81), which carries an all-new-generation discount, and a point above the Lexus IS (89) because the hybrid eCVT avoids the IS volume trim's direct-injected turbo four.
Across the ownership window that matters for a 2024 car, Lexus is the strongest dependability brand in the US market: first in J.D. Power's Vehicle Dependability Study in 2024 and again in 2025 (third consecutive win, 140 PP100 against a 202 industry average), and second in Consumer Reports' 2024 brand reliability ranking behind Subaru. No German rival in this segment is close on either study.
A live NHTSA query returns exactly two campaigns against the 2024 ES, and both are the same defect class: Panoramic View Monitor rearview-camera image delay, remedied by a parking-assist ECU software update. Nothing powertrain, fire, airbag or structural, and this generation-year sits clear of the Takata inflator and Denso fuel-pump actions that swept earlier Toyota/Lexus model years. Held below the 90s because two camera campaigns in two years is not a spotless sheet and CR owners report scattered electronics and 12V-battery complaints.
The scored hybrid trim is the 2.5-liter A25A-FXS four with Toyota Hybrid System II and a planetary eCVT — the most field-proven electrified powertrain family in the world, shared with the Camry Hybrid and RAV4 Hybrid and carrying a high-mileage fleet and taxi record with no chronic failure mode. The eCVT has no clutch packs, bands or torque converter to wear, a structural durability advantage over the German rivals' 8-speed automatics, and the traction battery is covered 10 years/150,000 miles.
Reviewers consistently describe the ES cabin as plush and convincingly premium — NuLuxe synthetic leather across seats, doors and dash, soft-touch upper surfaces and Lexus's characteristically damped switchgear. What holds it out of the top band is age and ambition rather than cheapness: the dashboard architecture dates to the 2019 launch and the digital instrument cluster reads as basic by 2024 standards, so the E-Class and A6 buy more visual richness at the price. Scored below the redesigned 2026 ES (84) and well above the older-architecture IS (74).
Assembly is the ES's strongest quality attribute and 2024 is a best case for it — a Japanese-built body in the sixth year of a generation, with the line long since converged and Lexus's takumi inspection regime on top. Reviewers report tightly set panel gaps and immaculate paint, and owner reports carry essentially no assembly-defect thread. Scored above both the first-year 2026 ES (89) and the IS (90), with a couple of points withheld for the scattered minor complaints CR owners do log.
Coverage is thinner on the ground than BMW's or Mercedes-Benz's at roughly 240 US stores, but Lexus is the industry reference point for luxury service satisfaction, regularly leading or placing top-three in J.D. Power's Customer Service Index, with loaners and pickup-and-delivery standard practice across the network. Strong satisfaction outweighs the modest density. Scored identically to the other Lexus entries in this dataset since the network is brand-wide, not model-year specific.
The ES shares its GA-K platform, engine and hybrid hardware with the Camry and Avalon, so mechanical parts are abundant, cheap by luxury standards and supported by a real independent-shop ecosystem — the structural advantage the dealer-dependent Germans lack. By 2024 the generation is six years old, so used and salvage supply is deep. Scored above the 2026 ES (80), whose all-new-generation parts the aftermarket has not caught up with, and short of a mainstream Toyota because luxury-specific trim, glass, lighting and body panels still carry premium pricing.
7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.54C+
The volume ES 300h still ships with the 8-inch Lexus Interface touchscreen, which is small for a mid-size luxury sedan. What changed for 2024 is reach rather than size: the new Technology Package finally makes the 12.3-inch unit orderable on the base ES 300h, where in 2023 it was confined to Luxury and above.
The Lexus Interface system that replaced the disliked Remote Touch trackpad in 2023 carries over intact, and reviewers of the 2024 car call it intuitive and quick, with the display moved forward within arm's reach and real physical climate controls retained below it. It is held out of the very top band by the small standard screen and a few awkwardly sited secondary controls.
Both wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are standard on the base ES 300h and every grade above it — no wired-only base model and no upper-trim paywall, which is the top of this item's scale.
The 'Hey Lexus' Intelligent Assistant is a genuine natural-language system that reviewers rank with the German benchmarks, and Cloud Navigation with Google POI data and live traffic is a real advance on Lexus's old embedded maps. The 2024 Technology Package now bundles a three-year Drive Connect trial onto the base ES 300h for the first time, but the underlying arrangement is unchanged: once the trial lapses, native navigation and the assistant's cloud functions become a paid subscription rather than built-in equipment.
A 10-speaker Lexus Premium Sound System is standard on the base car — generous where rivals fit six — and the optional Mark Levinson 17-speaker, 1,800-watt PurePlay Surround system is one of the better factory audio upgrades at this price, with speakers mounted high in the cabin to cut reflections.
The seventh-generation ES never received the full-digital cluster its rivals standardized, and 2024 does not change that — the base car has a colour LCD multi-information display flanked by conventional gauges, and only the F SPORT grades get the LFA-style meter with its sliding bezel. A mid-size luxury sedan with no configurable full-digital gauge display at any price is behind the class.
Lexus Interface brought genuine over-the-air updating to the ES — multimedia software and cloud-based maps refresh without a dealer visit — but this is infotainment-scope OTA, not the whole-vehicle updating that adds powertrain, ADAS or comfort features after delivery.
The Lexus app covers the core remote set — engine start, lock/unlock, climate scheduling, vehicle locate, vehicle health reports and service scheduling — and Lexus extends Safety Connect and Service Connect to up to ten-year trials on the 2024 car. The remote functions themselves still ride on a three-year Remote Connect trial that converts to a paid subscription, and the ES was not among the models offered Lexus Digital Key, so there is no phone-as-key.
Device duty is genuinely covered: USB-C ports sit in a hidden compartment ahead of the shifter and two more plus a 12-volt outlet live in the console bin, with USB ports and an outlet again for rear passengers. What holds it mid-pack is provisioning rather than port type — the Qi wireless charging pad is locked inside the Premium Package instead of being standard, there is no household AC outlet anywhere in the car, and Lexus advertises no high-wattage fast charging.
SmartAccess proximity entry with push-button start is standard on every ES, remote engine start comes through both the key fob and the Lexus app, and the SmartAccess card key is offered as a standalone option as well as inside the new Technology Package. The gaps are the subscription behind app-based remote start, no phone-as-key on this model year, and hands-free trunk access being an upper-grade item.
The base ES leaves the showroom with a backup camera and dynamic gridlines and nothing else — front and rear parking sensors arrive with the Premium Package, and the four-camera Panoramic View Monitor with Rear Pedestrian Detection is standard only on Ultra Luxury and optional on Luxury and F SPORT Handling. That is thin provision for a luxury sedan, and the quality of what is offered at the top does not offset its absence on the grades most people buy.
This is where 2024 genuinely moves the ES forward. The 10.2-inch full-colour head-up display was previously unavailable on the base car at any price; the new Technology Package puts it — along with the 12.3-inch screen and Drive Connect — on the volume ES 300h for about $1,630, and it remains standard on Ultra Luxury. Short of the top band only because it is still a paid package rather than standard equipment on the grades most buyers take.
8Use-Case FitOne of the ES's weakest categories.2.05C
The back seat itself is a strength: IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Good (cat3.3.3 = 84) with two complete outboard anchor sets, and 39.2 in of rear legroom means a rear-facing seat fits without shoving the front passenger forward. What pulls it to the middle band is the trunk — 13.9 cu ft with rear seatbacks that do not fold is a genuine constraint once a full-size stroller goes in, and the load aperture is a decklid rather than a hatch. The centre seating position is tether-only, so three across is impractical.
The equipment side is excellent for families on a budget: Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 is standard on every 2024 ES grade, with blind-spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert standard rather than trim-locked, so the entry ES 300h carries the whole suite. NHTSA gives the exact ES 300h FWD configuration 5 stars overall. It cannot reach the top band because the weakness IIHS found is precisely a family one — Marginal in the updated moderate overlap front test on rear-passenger restraints and kinematics, and a Marginal rear-passenger pelvis result in the updated side test.
Four-up touring suits the ES well — ride quality 88 and cabin quietness 82 in cat4, front seats 84, and one of the roomiest back seats in the class, with rear vents, USB ports and a power rear sunshade from Luxury up. The hybrid battery lives under the rear cushion, so carrying five costs nothing in trunk space. The deductions are for amenities and capacity rather than comfort: dual-zone climate where rivals offer three or four zones with rear controls, no rear seat heating or entertainment provision, and only 13.9 cu ft of luggage room with the seats occupied.
Low-effort commuting is the ES 300h's defining mission and the hardware matches it exactly: the planetary eCVT has no shift shock and no torque-converter hesitation, the car pulls away and crawls in traffic on electric power with the engine off, and stop-start is inherent to the system rather than bolted on. Add class-leading ride isolation, light steering, standard full-speed-range radar cruise that works to a stop and back, standard wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, and — unlike the eighth-generation car — real physical climate and audio controls. Held short of the low 90s by the 8-inch standard screen and 215 hp that reviewers call underpowered for merging.
This is the ES 300h's single biggest advantage over the German mid-size luxury sedans and it is not close. EPA rates it 43/44/44 MPG on 87-octane regular for about $1,400 a year at 15,000 miles, where the premium-fuel A6 (~28 MPG) and E 350 4MATIC (~26 MPG) run roughly twice that. Regenerative braking materially extends pad and rotor life, Lexus posts the lowest maintenance-and-repair costs of any luxury brand, and the mechanicals are shared with high-volume Toyotas. Held below 90 by luxury-sized tires and luxury-tier insurance.
At 195.9 in long and 73.4 in wide the seventh-generation ES is the most compact car in this peer group — shorter than the 5 Series, the A6 and the eighth-generation ES that replaces it — and the conventional three-box greenhouse with a low cowl gives better over-the-shoulder vision than the fastbacks around it (cat3.3.2 = 72). A 38.0 ft turning circle is unremarkable, and the camera help is thin on the volume grade: backup camera standard, parking sensors only with the Premium Package, and the Panoramic View Monitor gated to the top grades.
The ES has no US tow rating, no bed, and no payload provision beyond a trunk — it is a luxury commuter sedan and nothing in the 2024 lineup changes that. Worse for this item than its rivals: the trunk is only 13.9 cu ft, the seatbacks do not fold, and 215 hp through an eCVT is the least loaded-capable powertrain in the peer group. Squarely in the 'not meaningfully work-capable' band.
Mechanically the ES is the most abuse-proof car in this peer group by a wide margin: the 2.5L Dynamic Force four with Toyota's hybrid system and planetary eCVT is the most field-proven electrified powertrain in the world, with a high-mileage taxi and fleet record, no chronic failure mode, cheap shared parts and a real independent-shop ecosystem — a structural advantage over the 48V mild-hybrid Germans whose complexity and service pricing sink them into the 20s and 30s. What keeps it near the band floor is everything above the chassis: NuLuxe or semi-aniline leather, wood trim and 17-to-19-inch wheels are not surfaces you load tools onto, and no wear-friendly vinyl or rubber-floor option exists.
There is essentially nothing here: no factory hitch, no bed, no roof rails, no washable surfaces, and no household AC outlet anywhere in the car — only USB-C ports and a 12-volt socket. Cargo access is a decklid onto a carpeted trunk floor with fixed rear seatbacks, and no upfitter ecosystem exists for the nameplate. Bottom of the guidance band alongside the other luxury sedans, a notch under them because the seats do not even fold.
A near-ideal interstate car. Ride quality rates 88 and cabin quietness 82, front seats are the ES's most consistently praised feature, and the EPA-derived 581-mile tank range on regular fuel beats every premium-burning German rival in the class and turns a long day into a single fuel stop. Standard full-speed-range radar cruise plus lane tracing cuts fatigue. The deduction is the assist system's ceiling rather than its presence: lane tracing is hands-on only and works only with the cruise engaged, and no hands-free highway mode is offered on the ES at any price.
Pavement-bound, and more so than any rival here. All-wheel drive simply does not exist on the ES 300h — it is front-drive on every grade, and the AWD in the 2024 ES lineup belongs to the non-hybrid ES 250, a different powertrain. Beyond that there is sedan ground clearance, no factory roof rails or crossbar provision, no tow rating for a bike rack or small trailer, no 110V outlet for camp power, and fixed rear seatbacks. A graded gravel road and a trunk-lid bike rack are the honest limit.
Restrictive. The 13.9 cu ft trunk is small for the class even before flexibility enters it, and the ES has no folding rear seatbacks — a centre pass-through on some grades is the only route from cabin to trunk, so skis, flat-pack furniture and long gear simply will not go in. No roof rails, no hitch and no underfloor storage give it nowhere else to put things. Four people's soft luggage fits easily; anything bulky does not.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.57C+
The GA-K platform gives the seventh-generation ES a rigid, secure chassis that stays composed at any speed a buyer of this car will use, and body lean is better contained than the plush ride suggests. But it is a comfort-tuned front-drive sedan that leans on safe understeer rather than adjustability — reviewers who take it down a back road report noticeable roll and a car that feels heavier than its rivals — so it sits well below the rear-drive Germans in this set.
Lexus tunes the ES's electric assist for light, low-effort isolation and it succeeds on that brief — accurate and consistent on centre, easy to place in traffic — but almost no road surface information reaches the rim, and reviewers describe the feedback as vague even on the F SPORT tune. Precise enough, and numb.
The ES 300h's electronically controlled brake system blends regeneration into friction braking with little of the grabbiness or dead-zone hand-off that dogs rival regen systems, and reviewers call the pedal confident and responsive in normal use. Outright stopping power is adequate rather than strong — a comfort-first calibration on low-rolling-resistance tires, with the one published instrumented ES 300h figure a long 172 ft from 70 mph — so it stays out of the top band.
The ES's strongest dynamic trait. The series-parallel hybrid pulls away on electric torque with no stop/start shudder, no shift steps and hand-offs between motor and engine that reviewers cannot detect, and the engine simply shuts off on a coasting throttle. Only the elastic eCVT response under hard throttle — where revs flare ahead of the car — keeps it out of the very top of the band.
At cruise the ES 300h is near-silent — low-speed EV running and heavy acoustic isolation are generation hallmarks, and nothing vibrates through the controls. Ask for full throttle and the 2.5-liter four hangs at high revs against the eCVT, the classic hybrid drone, and it sounds coarse against an otherwise hushed background. Refined and inoffensive most of the time, uninspiring when pushed.
38 feet is unremarkable for a mid-size sedan — the ES's 113.0-inch wheelbase costs it what its modest 195.9-inch length gives back — and the F SPORT grades on 19-inch wheels give up almost another foot.
A low, well-supported seating position with a low cowl and a conventional three-box greenhouse gives better forward and quarter sightlines than the fastbacks replacing this shape, the 10-way power seats are standard on every grade, and the 2022 refresh moved the display within arm's reach while keeping real physical climate and audio controls. Two deductions keep it out of the top band: the power tilt-and-telescopic steering column is a Premium Package item rather than standard on a $45,000 luxury car, and reviewers flag a few awkwardly sited secondary controls.
The ES 300h is explicitly engineered as a serene, effortless luxury cruiser and it delivers exactly that — pleasant, quiet, completely undemanding, and with nothing an enthusiast would seek out. 8.1 seconds to 60 mph, an eCVT that drones rather than sings, vague steering and comfort-tuned dampers add up to appliance-adjacent. Buyers who want the ES to be interesting are pointed at the 302-hp ES 350 or the F SPORT Handling chassis, neither of which is this car.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the ES's strongest categories.3.45B+
Lexus includes at base what the Germans bill for: the full Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 suite (pre-collision with pedestrian detection, dynamic radar cruise, lane tracing, road-sign assist), blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, dual-zone climate and power front seats are standard on every 2024 ES, where a BMW 530i or Mercedes E 350 still charges for comparable driver-assist content. It stops short of the top band because the base grade gets an 8-inch touchscreen — the 12.3-inch Lexus Interface display, head-up display and SmartAccess Card Key only arrive with the new-for-2024 Technology Package, and heated/ventilated seats and a heated wheel live in the $2,790 Premium Package.
The ES 300h is the content-per-dollar standout of the mid-size luxury sedan class: $44,590 buys a 215-hp hybrid rated 43/44/44 MPG with a quiet, genuinely luxurious cabin and a full active-safety suite, while a 2024 BMW 530i, Mercedes E 350 or Audi A6 opens $10,000–$15,000 higher for no more space and worse economy. Buyers give up rear-drive dynamics and badge cachet, but nothing in the segment matches what the ES delivers per dollar.
Unusually wide for a single nameplate in 2024: three powertrains (2.5L four with AWD as the ES 250, 302-hp V6 as the ES 350, 2.5L hybrid as the ES 300h) across Base, F SPORT Design, Luxury, F SPORT Handling and Ultra Luxury grades, with the Premium and new Technology packages to fill the gaps. The hybrid alone spans $43,440 to $52,330 in five configurations. Only a dedicated performance F variant is missing.
The ES is the volume anchor of a shrinking segment — 43,156 US units in 2024, at or near the top of the luxury-sedan sales chart and comfortably ahead of the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes E-Class and Audi A6 — and it remains the top-selling sedan in the Lexus lineup. It is well off its 2007 peak, but that reflects the industry-wide migration to SUVs rather than any weakness specific to the nameplate.
Lexus carries exceptional brand equity on dependability, dealer experience and ownership satisfaction, with unusually strong repeat-buyer loyalty that directly supports the ES's residuals. It sits a notch below Mercedes-Benz, BMW and Porsche on pure aspirational cachet and enthusiast credibility — the recurring criticism of the ES is that it is admired rather than coveted.
Mid-cycle 2024 was a good year to transact on an ES: Lexus Financial Services ran subvented leases with meaningful lease cash on the 300h, and the hybrid historically carries better support than the gas cars. Factory cash rebates and dealer discounting stayed modest — Lexus is a firm-pricing brand and the ES was never a fire-sale car — so the buyer benefit is real but concentrated in leasing rather than cash purchase.
2024 is the sixth model year of the seventh-generation (XZ10) ES launched for 2019, two years past its 2022 facelift, and the year's changes amounted to a new Technology Package and a new 18-inch wheel. Squarely mid-to-late cycle — still competitive, but the platform and cabin architecture were showing their age and the all-new eighth generation arrived two model years later.
Consistently well-reviewed and genuinely decorated on the value and ownership axes — KBB Best Buy in the midsize luxury class five years running, IIHS Top Safety Pick for 2024, top-of-list placement at US News — but it is almost never the winner of a dynamics-weighted comparison test, where reviewers put it behind the 5 Series and Genesis G80 for steering feel and engagement, and the base 8-inch screen drew criticism. Praised for what it is, rarely the enthusiast's pick.
