The verdict

A mixed-report mid-size luxury sedan, strong on efficiency and held back by performance.

The 2023 Lexus ES 300h is a used-luxury safe bet: 44 MPG combined on regular gas, a $1,400-a-year fuel bill, a cabin quiet enough that reviewers reach for S-Class comparisons, and Lexus's best-in-industry dependability record behind it. It scores an 88.3 on reliability and retains about 60% of its $43,690 sticker after five years, which is the whole pitch. What you give up is drive: 215 hp and 8.3 seconds to 60 mph is slow for a luxury sedan, the hybrid is front-wheel drive only at any price, and a 13.9-cu-ft trunk with rear seats that don't fold is small for the class. Buy it for the commute and the peace of mind, not for the back roads or the cargo run.

Strengths

  • Safety kit you get on the cheapest one
  • Lexus dependability, and resale to match
  • Ride and quiet that punch above the price

What holds it back

  • Slow, and never pretends otherwise
  • No all-wheel drive on the hybrid at any price
  • Small trunk, and the rear seats don't fold

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainThe ES's lowest-graded category.0.32F
Horsepower
215 hp combined (ES 300h hybrid); ES lineup max 302 hp (ES 350 V6)
22/100
#11 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2023 ES 300h pairs a 2.5L Atkinson-cycle four with an electric motor for 215 hp total system output — modest for a mid-size luxury sedan, where rivals commonly field 250–375 hp.

Torque
163 lb-ft @ 3,600 rpm (2.5L gas engine; Lexus publishes no combined system torque)
13/100
#11 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lexus quotes engine torque only for the hybrid; 163 lb-ft is low against turbocharged luxury rivals, though electric motor assist makes low-speed response feel stronger than the figure suggests.

0–60 mph time
8.3 s (instrumented); Lexus-estimated 8.1 s
18/100
#11 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Instrumented testing puts the FWD ES 300h at 8.3 seconds to 60 mph, well off the pace of the mid-size luxury segment where high-5s to low-7s is typical.

Powertrain refinement68
#10 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Reviewers consistently praise how seamlessly the ES 300h swaps between electric and gas running and how quiet it is at cruise, but the 2.5L four becomes audibly coarse and strained under hard throttle — a contrast amplified by the unusually well-insulated cabin.

Transmission behavior70
#8 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The planetary power-split eCVT never hunts or shifts harshly and is essentially imperceptible in normal driving, but it delivers the classic Toyota hybrid drone — engine revs flaring ahead of road speed — whenever more than light throttle is asked for.

AWD/4WD availability15
#11 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The ES 300h is front-wheel drive exclusively for 2023 — all-wheel drive is confined to the gas ES 250, so a buyer who wants the hybrid cannot have AWD at any price.

Powertrain lineup breadth72
#3 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Three genuinely distinct powertrains for 2023 — a 203-hp 2.5L four with standard AWD (ES 250), a 302-hp 3.5L V6 (ES 350) and the 215-hp hybrid (ES 300h) — cover efficiency, mainstream and V6-performance buyers, though there is no PHEV or EV variant and each powertrain is locked to a single drive layout.

2Efficiency & RangeThe ES's best-graded category.4.00A+
Combined fuel economy
44 MPG combined (ES 300h); ES 250 AWD 28, ES 350 26
100/100
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

EPA rates the 2023 ES 300h at 44 MPG combined — strong for a mid-size luxury sedan in absolute terms, and mid-pack among hybrids, which is the class it is graded against.

City fuel economy
43 MPG city
100/100
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Regenerative braking and low-speed electric running give the ES 300h 43 MPG in town, roughly double what the V6 ES 350 manages (22 city).

Highway fuel economy
44 MPG highway
95/100
#3 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

At 44 MPG highway the ES 300h is unusual among hybrids in matching its city figure, reflecting the seventh-generation ES's slippery body and Atkinson-cycle engine rather than heavy reliance on regen.

Driving range
~581 mi (13.2-gal tank × 44 MPG combined)
80/100
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The ES 300h carries a smaller 13.2-gallon tank than the gas ES models' 15.9 gallons, so its real range is about 580 miles rather than the 700 miles fueleconomy.gov shows — that listing appears to apply the gas-model tank size to the hybrid.

Estimated annual fuel cost
$1,400/yr (EPA, 15,000 mi/yr); $2.36 per 25 mi
82/100
#3 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

EPA puts annual fuel spend at $1,400 — $1,000/yr less than the V6 ES 350 and among the cheapest figures in any luxury sedan, helped by the hybrid running on regular unleaded.

Fuel requirements90
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The ES 300h runs on regular 87-octane unleaded with no plug, no premium requirement and no charging infrastructure to arrange — unusual in a luxury sedan class where premium is the norm.

3SafetyOne of the ES's strongest categories.3.24B+
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (frontal 4, side 5, rollover 4)
100/100
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

NHTSA rated the 2023 ES 300h 4DR FWD 5 stars overall, with 5-star side and 4-star frontal and rollover sub-scores.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness62
#10 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A 2023 Top Safety Pick (not TSP+) with Good small overlap both sides, Good original moderate overlap, Good roof and head restraints — but Marginal in the updated moderate overlap test (rear-passenger restraints/kinematics Marginal) and only Acceptable in the updated side test, which is a real rear-seat protection flag rather than a paperwork miss.

Standard ADAS suite breadth88
#4 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Every 2023 ES grade, including the base ES 300h at $43,690, carries the full Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 plus Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert — AEB, all-speed adaptive cruise, lane keeping/centering, BSM and RCTA are all standard, with nothing core paywalled to upper trims.

Automatic emergency braking performance85
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS front crash prevention is Superior vehicle-to-vehicle and Superior for nighttime pedestrians, with Advanced daytime pedestrian — among the stronger AEB results in the segment, held just short of the top band by the daytime crossing-adult result.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage72
#8 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert is standard on every grade, but coverage is alert-only — no rear cross-traffic braking, no safe-exit assist to warn about cyclists at the door.

Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist and Lane Tracing Assist are standard and keep the car centered predictably on marked highway, but reviewers describe the steering correction as deliberately limited — a nudge for lapses of attention rather than confident hands-on centering.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist80
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

All-Speed Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with full stop-and-go is standard and for 2023 adds curve speed management that sheds speed ahead of a bend; paired with Lane Tracing Assist it makes a well-integrated highway assist, though it stops short of a named hands-on highway system.

Hands-free driving availability5
#11 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No hands-free highway driving is offered on the 2023 ES at any trim — Lexus Teammate Advanced Drive was confined to the LS 500h and RZ, and even that is a hands-on-wheel system rather than a BlueCruise/Super Cruise equivalent.

Headlight performance88
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rates both available headlight configurations Good, so every 2023 ES buyer gets top-rated lighting regardless of trim, and Intelligent High Beams are standard across the range.

Outward visibility68
#7 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Forward and side sightlines are good for a low-slung luxury sedan and the driving position is easy to set, but the raked rear glass and thick rear pillars leave a real over-the-shoulder blind zone, and the Panoramic View Monitor that would compensate is an upper-trim/package item rather than standard.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability82
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

IIHS rates the ES LATCH hardware Good for ease of use, and the wide rear doors and roomy back seat make installing and loading seats straightforward; three-across remains tight, as in any mid-size sedan.

4Space & ComfortGrades above the middle of the scale.2.80B-
Seating capacity
5 seats (2+3), identical across all ES 300h trims
100/100
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The ES 300h seats five in a conventional two-row layout on every trim from base through Ultra Luxury, the maximum for a mid-size sedan.

Front headroom
37.5 in front headroom (power moonroof standard on every ES trim)
38/100
#8 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

37.5 inches is mid-pack for a sedan and is the only figure Lexus publishes — the power moonroof is standard equipment on every ES grade, so there is no sunroof-delete number to quote.

Front legroom
42.4 in front legroom
60/100
#3 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

42.4 inches of front legroom is generous for the class and stretches the ES's long 113-inch wheelbase to the driver's benefit; the front seats are 10-way power on every trim, 14-way on Luxury and above.

Rear headroom
37.4 in rear headroom
60/100
#10 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The published 37.4 inches is respectable on paper, but the ES's sharply raked roofline means reviewers repeatedly flag rear headroom as the back seat's limiting dimension for tall adults, not legroom.

Rear legroom
39.2 in rear legroom — Lexus advertises it as class-leading
72/100
#2 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

39.2 inches is one of the roomiest back seats in the mid-size luxury class, a direct consequence of the ES's 113-inch wheelbase and the reason the nameplate has always read as a near-full-size car inside.

Cargo/trunk volume
13.9 cu ft trunk — same as the gas ES; rear seats do not fold
39/100
#5 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

13.9 cubic feet is below par for a mid-size sedan and is the ES's clearest packaging weakness; the hybrid battery sits under the rear seat rather than in the trunk, so the 300h loses nothing to the ES 350, but neither car offers folding rear seats to extend the space.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions58
#7 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

2023 brought a redesigned center console built around the new touchscreen, with a usable bin, cupholders and an available wireless charging pad, and rear passengers get a fold-down armrest, USB ports and a 12-volt outlet — but there is no standout storage idea, the wireless charger is package-only, and fixed rear seatbacks mean nothing long can be carried through from the trunk on most trims.

Seat comfort84
#4 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Every ES gets 10-way power front seats that reviewers describe as firm, well-cushioned and supportive without aggressive bolsters, and heated/ventilated fronts are a cheap package away; the back seat is comfortable and lounge-like for two adults. It stops short of the top band only because ventilation is not standard and the rear bench is flat by luxury-flagship standards.

Ride quality88
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Ride comfort is the ES's headline competence — soft without float, and reviewers reach for S-Class comparisons when describing how it absorbs broken pavement and speed bumps. Body control is better than the plush tune suggests, with performance dampers on Luxury and above and Adaptive Variable Suspension on F SPORT Handling.

Cabin quietness82
#3 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The hybrid is the quietest ES — it runs on electricity at low speed and Lexus applies LS-derived sound deadening, noise-reduction wheels and Hybrid-Acoustics noise cancellation — and reviewers call it one of the most serene cabins at the price. What keeps it out of the top band is the same thing that spoils it: when the 2.5-liter engine does fire up it is audible and coarse against an otherwise library-quiet background.

Climate & comfort features68
#9 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Dual-zone automatic climate with air filtration and a smog sensor is standard, and the ventilated seats are unusually effective because they draw conditioned air from the climate system rather than just circulating cabin air — but heated and ventilated seats plus the heated wheel all sit in the Premium Package rather than standard equipment, the power rear sunshade starts at Luxury, and rear passengers get vents only, not their own climate zone.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the ES's weakest categories.1.87C-
Base MSRP
$43,690 (ES 300h, incl. $1,150 DPH); ES lineup opens at $42,490 for ES 250 AWD / ES 350
34/100
#3 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Entry price of the hybrid configuration this scorecard describes; the ES 300h carries a roughly $1,200 premium over the gas ES 250/ES 350 entry point, and the hybrid range tops out near $52,000 for Ultra Luxury.

Volume-Trim Price
~$46,000 (ES 300h base with Premium Package, as typically equipped); trim range $43,690–$52,130
35/100
#3 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The plain ES 300h is the volume hybrid trim, but it is rarely sold stripped — most retail cars add the Premium Package (heated/ventilated front seats, blind spot monitor) and the 12.3-inch touchscreen, which lands a typical transaction near $46,000.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$6,858 over 5 yr / 60,000 mi ($5,771 maintenance + $1,087 repairs)
33/100
#7 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Edmunds' True Cost to Own projection for the 2023 ES 300h is used because it is the like-for-like basis applied across this catalog — dealer-rate scheduled service plus tires, brakes and unscheduled repairs; owner-reported trackers put the ES far lower, so this figure should be read as a conservative ceiling rather than a typical bill.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~60% of MSRP retained at 5 yr (39.6% depreciation)
85/100
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Resale is the ES's single strongest ownership attribute — it retains roughly 60% after five years against a luxury-midsize class average near 54%, and Lexus took the KBB Best Resale Value luxury-brand award for 2023.

Basic warranty
4 yr / 50,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
50/100
#2 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Standard Lexus basic coverage — a year longer than mainstream 3/36 terms and level with Cadillac and the German luxury brands, but short of Genesis and Jaguar's 5/60.

Powertrain warranty
6 yr / 70,000 mi powertrain; hybrid system 8 yr / 100,000 mi and hybrid battery 10 yr / 150,000 mi
20/100
#5 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 6-year powertrain term is unremarkable and well behind Genesis and Hyundai/Kia's 10/100, but a hybrid buyer gets substantially longer cover on the parts unique to this drivetrain — the battery pack is warranted 10 years / 150,000 miles and transfers to subsequent owners.

Complimentary maintenance & perks68
#6 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Included maintenance is short — two visits inside the first year — but the surrounding ownership package is better than that implies: roadside assistance runs a full four years with no mileage cap, and the connected-services and Lexus app trials are long-dated. It lands above Cadillac's single free visit and below the multi-year maintenance programs at Genesis, BMW and Volvo.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$25,074 (≈$18,216 depreciation + $6,858 maintenance)
60/100
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

$46,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (60.4% retained, or about $27,784) leaves about $18,216 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,858 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $25,074 in total.

6Reliability & QualityOne of the ES's strongest categories.4.00A+
Predicted reliability88
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2023 ES is a mature fifth-year car in the seventh generation (2019-2025), so it is graded on real field data rather than a prediction: the J.D. Power 2026 Vehicle Dependability Study surveyed original owners of 2023 model-year vehicles at three years and put Lexus first among all brands, and RepairPal rates the ES300h at a 4% probability of a severe repair against a 12% luxury-midsize average. Held just below the top of the band because Consumer Reports' exact numeric predicted-reliability score for this model year is paywalled and could not be read directly.

Brand reliability track record91
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lexus is the most consistently top-ranked brand in US dependability research — first overall in the J.D. Power VDS for four consecutive years, and top-three in Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings in both of the last two annual surveys. That multi-year record is well clear of every German rival in this segment; a point or two is withheld because the CR ranking has drifted from first to third rather than holding the top spot outright.

Recall & TSB history88
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The NHTSA record for the 2023 ES is two campaigns, and both are the same trivial defect — a parking-assist ECU software error that delayed or blanked the rearview camera image in reverse, an FMVSS 111 compliance issue remedied by a free software update with no hardware replacement. There is no powertrain, fire, structural or airbag action against this model year, which is an exceptionally clean record for a modern luxury sedan.

Powertrain durability reputation92
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The ES 300h runs the 2.5-liter Atkinson-cycle four with Toyota's hybrid transaxle for 215 combined horsepower — the most field-proven electrified powertrain family in the world, shared with the high-volume Camry and RAV4 hybrids and carrying a long taxi and fleet high-mileage record with no chronic failure mode. The planetary eCVT has no clutch packs or torque converter to wear, a structural durability advantage over the 8- and 9-speed automatics in the German rivals, and hybrid components carry 10-year/150,000-mile coverage.

Interior material quality80
#9 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Reviewers consistently praise the ES cabin for supple NuLuxe upholstery, soft-touch upper surfaces, contrast stitching and multi-textured door panels, and 2023 brought a redesigned center console with a relocated cup holder and available wireless charger. It remains a rung below the segment's material benchmarks, though — the E-Class (93) and A6 (89) push harder on visual richness and metal content, and the ES's Camry-derived architecture shows in harder plastics in lower-touch zones.

Fit & finish90
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Assembly consistency is the ES's strongest quality attribute and 2023 is the fifth year of a settled generation on an unchanged body, so production variation is long since wrung out — reviewers cite tight panel gaps, damped button action and near-absent squeak-and-rattle complaints, backed by Lexus's habitual top-tier initial-quality standing. A small allowance is made for the all-new Lexus Interface multimedia system introduced this model year, the usual source of first-season software complaints in initial-quality surveys.

Dealer & service network88
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lexus runs roughly 245 US dealerships — thinner on the ground than BMW or Mercedes-Benz and far thinner than parent Toyota — but it is the reference point for luxury service satisfaction, winning or sharing the top of J.D. Power's Customer Service Index year after year. That satisfaction record outweighs the modest density and places it above BMW and Mercedes-Benz (both 80) and well above Audi (72).

Parts availability & repair cost84
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The ES shares its GA-K platform, engine and hybrid hardware with high-volume Toyota models, so mechanical parts are abundant, cheap by luxury standards and supported by a genuine independent-shop ecosystem — a structural advantage over the dealer-dependent Germans (E-Class 48, A6 52, 5 Series 64). It sits below a Camry because luxury-specific trim, glass, lighting and body panels still carry premium pricing.

7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.47C+
Touchscreen size
8.0 in standard; 12.3 in available (standard on Ultra Luxury)
12/100
#11 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The volume ES 300h ships with the 8-inch Lexus Interface touchscreen; the 12.3-inch unit Lexus advertises as the largest in the class is an extra-cost option on every grade except Ultra Luxury, where it is standard.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness80
#3 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

2023 is the year the ES finally dropped the widely disliked Remote Touch trackpad for the new Lexus Interface, moving the display forward within arm's reach and adding a smartphone-like touch UI that reviewers call bright, responsive and intuitive. It is held out of the very top band by the small standard screen and a few awkwardly sited physical controls.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto92
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Both wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are standard on the base ES 300h and every trim above it — no wired-only base model, no upper-trim paywall — which is the top of this item's scale.

Voice control & native navigation70
#10 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 'Hey Lexus' Intelligent Assistant is a genuine natural-language system that handles climate, audio and navigation entries, and Cloud Navigation with Google POI data and live traffic is a real step up from Lexus's old embedded maps — but both are Drive Connect features that lapse to a paid subscription after the trial, so a base ES that is out of trial has voice media/phone control and phone projection rather than native nav.

Audio system quality82
#6 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A 10-speaker Lexus Premium Sound System is standard on the base car — generous where rivals fit six — and the optional Mark Levinson 17-speaker, 1,800-watt PurePlay Surround system is one of the better factory audio upgrades at this price, with high-mounted speakers Lexus markets as a class exclusive.

Digital instrument cluster45
#9 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The 2023 ES never received the full-digital cluster its rivals standardized — the base car has a color LCD multi-information display flanked by conventional gauges, and only the F SPORT grades get the LFA-style meter with its sliding bezel. A mid-size luxury sedan with no configurable full-digital gauge display at any price is behind the class.

OTA update capability62
#7 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The new Lexus Interface brought genuine over-the-air updating to the ES for 2023 — multimedia software and cloud-based maps refresh without a dealer visit — but this is infotainment-scope OTA, not the whole-vehicle updating that adds powertrain, ADAS or comfort features after delivery.

Companion app & remote functions65
#9 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The Lexus app covers the core remote set — engine start, lock/unlock, climate scheduling, vehicle locate, vehicle health reports and service scheduling — and it works well, but the remote functions run on a Remote Connect trial that converts to a paid subscription, and the ES was not among the models that got Lexus Digital Key for 2023, so there is no phone-as-key.

Charging ports & device power60
#10 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

USB smartphone connectivity is standard front and rear and the back seat also gets a 12-volt outlet, which covers everyday device duty — but the Qi wireless charging pad is locked inside the Premium Package rather than standard, there is no household AC outlet, and Lexus does not advertise high-wattage USB-C fast charging anywhere in the range.

Keyless & remote access72
#9 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

SmartAccess proximity entry with push-button start is standard on every ES and remote engine start comes through both the key fob and the Lexus app, with a SmartAccess card key offered as a standalone option; the gaps are the subscription behind app-based remote start, no phone-as-key on this model year, and hands-free trunk access being an upper-trim item.

Camera & parking aids55
#10 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The base ES leaves the showroom with a backup camera and dynamic gridlines and nothing else — front and rear parking sensors come with the Premium Package, and the four-camera Panoramic View Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Braking is standard only on Ultra Luxury and optional on Luxury and F SPORT Handling. That is thin provision for a luxury sedan, and the quality of what is offered at the top does not offset its absence on the trims most people buy.

Head-up display availability62
#6 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The ES offers a large, well-regarded 10.2-inch full-color head-up display showing speed, gear and rpm with adjustable content — but it is standard only on the $52,130 Ultra Luxury and an option on Luxury and the F SPORT grades, so the volume base ES 300h cannot be ordered with it at all.

8Use-Case FitOne of the ES's weakest categories.1.53D
Kid & car-seat practicality64
#6 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The ES does the seat-installation part of family duty well — IIHS rates its LATCH hardware Good, the rear doors open wide and 39.2 inches of rear legroom leaves room for a rear-facing seat without punishing the front passenger. The logistics around it are where it gives ground to a crossover: a 13.9-cu-ft trunk that a stroller plus a week's gear will fill, rear seatbacks that do not fold, and a low roofline that means lifting a child down into the seat rather than across.

Family safety package78
#6 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A family buying the cheapest ES 300h gets the whole safety story: 5-star NHTSA overall, IIHS Top Safety Pick, the complete Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 suite and Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, with nothing core held back for upper trims. The reservation is specifically a rear-seat one — the ES is Marginal in the updated moderate-overlap test on rear-passenger restraints and kinematics, which is exactly where the kids sit.

Family road-trip comfort68
#7 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Four people travel very well in an ES 300h — class-leading rear legroom, rear vents and USB ports, one of the quietest cabins at the price and a ~580-mile tank. Two things cap it: the trunk runs out before the seats do on a family-of-four trip with no fold-down to borrow from, and rear amenities stop at vents and shades (no rear climate zone, no rear-seat entertainment, power sunshade only from Luxury up).

Daily driving ease88
#1 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

This is the mission the ES 300h was built for. It pulls away on electricity, the eCVT never hunts for a gear, the ride smothers city pavement and the standard all-speed adaptive cruise with Lane Tracing Assist takes the strain out of a jammed commute — reviewers describe it as gliding through traffic. The only daily-driving complaints are noise-related, not effort-related.

Commuting cost efficiency88
#2 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

44 MPG combined on regular unleaded, an EPA fuel bill of $1,400 a year and Toyota hybrid consumables — regenerative braking spares the pads, there is no belt-driven starter or conventional automatic to service — make the ES 300h one of the cheapest luxury cars in America to commute in. Lexus dealer labor rates and the complimentary first-year maintenance period are the only qualifiers.

Parking & maneuverability52
#9 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

At 195.9 inches long on a 113-inch wheelbase with a roughly 38-foot turning circle, the ES is a big car to thread through a city, and the base trim helps with a backup camera alone — parking sensors are a package away and the surround-view camera is effectively a top-trim item. Light steering and good forward comfort keep it manageable rather than awkward, but reviewers do flag the forward sightlines.

Work capability10
#11 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The ES 300h has no US tow rating, no bed, 13.9 cubic feet of sealed trunk, fixed rear seatbacks and 215 horsepower through the front wheels. Nothing about it is intended for work duty, and Lexus publishes no towing or payload figures for it.

Durability for work duty40
#2 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The mechanical package is genuinely tough — the Toyota Hybrid System in the ES 300h is the same architecture that has survived a decade of Camry and Prius taxi and fleet abuse, and Lexus's reliability record is among the best in the industry. What it is not is a work vehicle: NuLuxe and semi-aniline interiors, a low-slung body and no washable surfaces mean it holds up to mileage rather than to abuse.

Jobsite & upfit practicality8
#11 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

There is effectively nothing here: no onboard AC power, no bed or tie-down system, no factory roof rails or hitch, no upfit ecosystem, and a carpeted trunk that does not extend into the cabin. The work-adjacent accessories Lexus sells for the ES are floor and trunk mats.

Long-distance comfort & range85
#3 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

As a highway tourer the ES 300h is close to its best self: about 580 miles between fill-ups on regular fuel, seats reviewers call well-cushioned for long journeys, a cabin that stays quiet at speed, and standard all-speed adaptive cruise with lane centering to reduce fatigue. It misses the very top band because the eCVT drones on long grades and the highway assist is a hands-on nudge rather than a confident hands-free system.

Outdoor & adventure capability12
#11 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The hybrid ES is front-wheel drive only — all-wheel drive exists on the four-cylinder ES 250 and cannot be ordered on the 300h at any price — and it pairs sedan ground clearance with no tow rating, no roof rails, no AC power and 17- to 19-inch low-profile tires. It is a pavement car, and a snowy-driveway one only with winter tires.

Gear & luggage flexibility20
#11 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

13.9 cubic feet is small for the class to begin with, and the ES compounds it by not offering folding rear seatbacks — a center pass-through on some trims is the only way anything long travels inside. With no roof rails and no hitch, there is no way to add capacity outside the car either.

9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.11C
Handling & agility66
#10 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The ES is more composed than its comfort-first tuning implies — body lean is well contained and it stays settled through corners — but at 3,730 lb with front drive and a soft calibration it feels heavy rather than agile, and even the F SPORT Handling car with adaptive dampers does not turn it into a driver's sedan.

Steering feel52
#10 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Accurate and easy to place, but light and essentially devoid of feedback — the standard hybrid-sedan complaint. Sport mode adds weight without adding information, and the 2021-vintage Lexus Driving Signature retune improved response rather than feel.

Braking confidence66
#9 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Stopping power and consistency are not in doubt and the 2023 car is the best-braking ES hybrid yet — one tester specifically credits it with a strong, consistent bite free of earlier hybrids' grabbiness — but reviewers still disagree about the regen-to-friction handoff, with Edmunds calling the changeover clunky and harsh.

Powertrain smoothness & response76
#6 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The power-split hybrid is calibrated about as well as the architecture allows: it moves off silently on electricity, there is no starter-motor shudder or stop/start jolt, and transitions between electric and gas running are seamless in normal driving. What it lacks is response — 8.1–8.3 seconds to 60 mph and a need for a heavy foot to pass means the smoothness is never matched by urgency.

Drivetrain noise & vibration55
#10 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The ES 300h's weakest dynamic trait. The 2.5-liter four announces itself abruptly when it cuts in at low speed and drones under load as the eCVT holds revs ahead of road speed — and because the rest of the cabin is exceptionally well isolated, the contrast is more conspicuous here than it would be in a noisier car. There is no vibration problem, only a noise-character one.

Turning circle
38.0 ft curb-to-curb (17-in wheels); ~38.0–38.8 ft depending on wheel size
33/100
#2 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

A 38-foot curb-to-curb circle on a 113-inch wheelbase is on the wide side for a mid-size sedan and is felt in parking garages and three-point turns; the larger 18- and 19-inch wheels widen it further.

Driving position & ergonomics72
#7 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Ten-way power front seats and a wheel shaped from palm-pressure research give most drivers an easy, comfortable position with clear forward comfort, and moving the touchscreen within arm's reach for 2023 fixed the ES's worst ergonomic flaw. It falls short of the top band because the power tilt-and-telescopic column and easy-entry function are package items, a few secondary controls remain awkwardly sited, and forward sightlines draw criticism.

Fun-to-drive factor42
#11 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

No one buys an ES 300h to take the long way home. It is quiet, smooth and utterly undemanding, and the F SPORT badging promises a character the car never delivers — numb steering, 8.3 seconds to 60 mph and a droning eCVT add up to a well-executed appliance rather than an engaging one.

10Value & Market PositionGrades above the middle of the scale.2.95B-
Standard equipment generosity72
#6 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Every 2023 ES ships with the full Lexus Safety System+ 2.5 driver-assist suite, dual-zone climate, power front seats and NuLuxe upholstery at $43,690 — content German rivals bundle into option packages on cars that start $10,000 higher. The catch is that the standard multimedia screen is only 8 inches (the 12.3-inch unit is extra) and heated/ventilated seats and blind-spot monitoring sit behind the Premium Package.

Feature value per dollar80
#3 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The ES is the reference point for content-per-dollar in luxury midsize — a genuinely quiet, well-trimmed cabin, 44 MPG combined in hybrid form and class-leading resale, all for less than a base E-Class or 5 Series. What it does not deliver for the money is performance: 215 hp and 8.3 seconds to 60 is the price of the value proposition.

Trim & configuration breadth76
#3 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Three distinct powertrains and five hybrid trims spanning $43,690 to $52,130 give buyers real spread, and 2023 widened it further with F SPORT Design and the new F SPORT Handling on the hybrid. The gap is drivetrain choice: all-wheel drive is confined to the four-cylinder ES 250, so a hybrid or V6 buyer cannot get it at any price.

Sales popularity & market acceptance78
#2 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

The ES was the best-selling luxury sedan in the United States in 2023, outselling the E-Class and 5 Series by a wide margin. The trajectory is the qualifier — volume has slid from 51,336 in 2019 to 39,117 in 2023 as the whole segment gives ground to SUVs, though the model rebounded to 43,156 in 2024.

Brand desirability & image75
#5 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

Lexus carries genuine equity in dependability, dealer experience and resale — the qualities that make an ES easy to own and easy to sell — and that shows up directly in the residual data. It is less aspirational than Mercedes or BMW, and the ES in particular reads as the conservative, comfort-first choice rather than an object of desire.

Deals & incentive availability55
#11 of 11 Mid-Size Luxury CarsCompare all →

This is the ES's weakest value lever. Lexus discounts lightly by nature and 2023 was still a constrained-inventory year, so cash on the hood was thin and limited to narrow programs — a $1,000 military rebate and a loyalty offer, both requiring Lexus Financial. Lease support is the real buyer benefit here, with lease cash that regularly makes the ES one of the better-value luxury leases.

Model freshness62

2023 sits five years into the seventh-generation (XZ10) ES launched for 2019, past the 2022 facelift. Reviewers reliably rate the ES well and award bodies reward it — KBB's luxury-car Best Buy five years running, top of J.D. Power's midsize premium ranking, Top Safety Pick+ from IIHS — but it is a recommendation rather than a comparison-test winner, and enthusiast outlets consistently mark it down for soft, uninvolving dynamics and, in 300h form, a strained four-cylinder.
