The verdict
A struggling full-size van, strong on space and held back by efficiency.
The 2019 Sprinter was the first year of an all-new generation, and it is still the most polished and adaptable full-size van of its era. It offers up to 533 cu ft of cargo space, a 12-seat passenger layout, the most car-like cab in the class, and resale values that hold up unusually well. The new 188-hp gas four struggles with a full load, though. It returns only about 16 MPG on premium fuel, and as a launch-year van it is covered by 51 NHTSA recall campaigns. Buy one with a documented recall history, and choose it for space and upfit flexibility rather than muscle or running costs.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the Sprinter's weakest categories.0.34F
MY2019 is the launch year of the third-generation (VS30) Sprinter in the US, which brought the first gasoline engine to the US lineup. The scored 2.0L turbo four makes 188 hp, the same peak as the 3.0L V6 diesel, near the bottom of the van band.
The gas engine's 258 lb-ft trails the V6 diesel's 325 lb-ft. Owners of 2019 gas vans report it feels short on torque when loaded.
Mercedes publishes no 0–60 time and no US instrumented test of the 2019 gas van was found. With 188 hp and roughly 5,800–6,000 lb curb weight, about 11 seconds unladen fits comparable vans and is beyond the slow end of the van band.
The turbo gas four is quieter and smoother than the diesels, but it has to rev hard to move a heavy van and fades with cargo aboard. Owners of 2019 vans report it is short on torque, and it is clearly underpowered next to the Transit's 275-hp V6.
The gas Sprinter is the only 2019 version with the 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic, which shifts smoothly and keeps the small engine in its torque band. Owners note it downshifts often on grades, and the diesels kept the older seven-speed.
The gas 2500 is rated to tow 5,000 lbs when properly equipped. The 7,500-lb rating belongs to V6 diesel 3500/4500 configurations, which the scored gas van can't be ordered as.
A part-time 4x4 with optional low range reached the new-generation Sprinter months after launch, but only with the V6 diesel and seven-speed automatic. The gas van is RWD-only, so 4x4 covers a narrow slice of the lineup.
The RWD gas van is built for pavement, with no skid plates, lockers or low range and limited clearance on a long wheelbase. Only the late-arriving diesel 4x4, with low range and extra ride height, can handle loose surfaces.
The 2019 US lineup was combustion-only: the 188-hp gas I4 (RWD) and the 188-hp/325-lb-ft V6 diesel (RWD or 4x4). The announced four-cylinder diesel did not reach US dealers until late 2020, and the eSprinter was sold only in Europe.
2Efficiency & RangeThe Sprinter's lowest-graded category.0.00F
The Sprinter 2500 exceeds 8,500 lb GVWR, so the EPA does not rate it and there is no official figure. Owner reports for the 2019–2023 turbo-gas van, which did not change, cluster in the mid-teens, so 16 MPG combined is the middle estimate.
There is no official city figure. In stop-and-go driving the 188-hp turbo four works hard to move a heavy van, which puts it at about 15 MPG.
The nine-speed's tall top gear helps at cruise, but the tall body's drag holds the gas van to about 18 MPG on the highway.
The gas Sprinter's 22.0-gallon standard tank at about 16 MPG gives roughly 350 miles.
There is no EPA figure, so the cost is derived: 15,000 miles at about 16 MPG is roughly 940 gallons a year, about $2,950 at 2019's average premium price (~$3.15/gal).
US spec listings put the gas Sprinter on premium unleaded, a real cost for a fleet van burning about 940 gallons a year. Gasoline does avoid the diesels' DEF top-ups and is sold everywhere.
3SafetyOne of the Sprinter's weakest categories.1.27D
NHTSA lists every 2019 Sprinter variant it catalogs (1500 and 2500 cargo, 2500 15-passenger) as Not Rated for overall, frontal, side and rollover. The value is a segment-norm estimate, not a measured result, consistent with the other third-generation (VS30) years.
IIHS has never crash-tested the 2019 debut of the third-generation Sprinter, so there is no award to credit. The score stays at the segment norm because the airbag suite and stability control are standard and no structural concerns are documented.
On the 2019 launch year of the third generation, ESP, Crosswind Assist and a rear camera are standard. NHTSA records forward collision warning and lane departure warning as 'No' on the cargo and passenger vans. Active Brake Assist, Blind Spot Assist and DISTRONIC were packaged options, so the volume gas 2500 cargo van ships with little active assistance.
The new third-generation Sprinter offered radar-based Active Brake Assist, but NHTSA does not credit the 2019 US vans with forward collision warning, so most volume vans lack it. IIHS has published no front crash prevention results, so its performance is unverified.
Blind Spot Assist was a separately priced package option on 2019 US Sprinters, and it alerts rather than intervenes. There was no standard rear cross-traffic braking.
Active Lane Keeping Assist was an option, but NHTSA lists no lane departure warning for the 2019 vans, so few were equipped with it. Where fitted, it nudges the van back from lane edges rather than centering it continuously.
Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC, Mercedes' mature radar adaptive cruise, was offered on the new-generation van. It was an option rather than standard, and there was no integrated steering-assist highway mode.
The 2019 Sprinter offers no hands-free highway driving system, and DISTRONIC requires hands on the wheel.
Volume cargo builds have halogen headlamps, while LED high-performance headlamps and Headlight Assist (auto high beam) are options. IIHS has never rated the Sprinter's headlights.
A tall seating position, deep windshield and large split mirrors give strong forward and side sightlines. Windowless cargo bodies are blind at the rear quarters and rely on the rear camera, with a 360-degree camera in an optional parking package.
Passenger and Crew configurations have rear benches with child-seat anchors, and the wide sliding door and tall cabin make installation easy. The volume 2500 cargo van has only front seats, so it has no LATCH positions.
4Space & ComfortThe Sprinter's best-graded category.2.48C+
MY2019 is the US launch year of the third-generation (VS30) Sprinter. It added the 2.0L gas four, which was offered in the 144-inch Passenger Van with 12 seats; the 15-seat 170-inch Passenger came with the diesel.
The upright full-size van cab gives headroom far beyond the top of the van band, and the high roof adds roughly another 9 inches.
The bulkhead and upright seating position hold front legroom below what car-based vans and minivans offer.
The flat standard roof carries most of the cab's headroom through to the second row. Mercedes publishes no second-row figure, so this is an estimate.
The four-row, 12-seat layout leaves each row usable but not generous legroom for adults. Mercedes publishes no figure.
The full-height roof lets adults sit in the 12-passenger van's third and fourth benches. Access is through the sliding door over a tall step, and the benches are basic with no recline.
Graded on the 144-inch standard-roof cargo box, the same basis as the other third-generation Sprinter years. With all four Passenger rows installed, little space remains behind the last bench.
The extended high-roof body is one of the largest cargo boxes in the class. That figure is the nameplate maximum; the gas 2500 is offered in fewer lengths.
The cab has a dash-top tray, overhead and door bins, and an optional smartphone tray with wireless charging, which was new for 2019. Rear passengers get little dedicated storage, and no household outlet is standard.
The well-bolstered front seats are widely considered the best in a full-size van. The Passenger Van's rear benches are upright and lightly padded.
The ride is more composed than the ProMaster's and on par with the Transit's, though a lightly loaded van stays firm over broken pavement.
The gas four idles more quietly than the diesels but revs hard under load, and wind and road noise carry into the tall passenger area.
Passenger Vans get rear auxiliary climate, and cruise control, a tilt/telescoping wheel and heated mirrors are standard. Heated seats, a heated wheel and automatic climate are options, and ventilated seats are not offered.
5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.00C
The cheapest 2019 Sprinter, the launch year of the VS30 generation, is the 1500 standard-roof 144-inch cargo van. The gas 2.0L I4 2500 cargo van starts $1,200 higher, and 2019 list prices sit a few hundred dollars under 2020.
Among gas vans, the most common upfit spec is the high-roof 170-inch 2500 cargo, at $41,385 delivered. Typical option packages (driver assistance, MBUX upgrade, partition) bring the sticker to about $44.5K.
CarEdge projects about $6,200 over five years for the Sprinter 2500, but that model-level figure is weighted toward diesel vans. The gas I4 avoids DEF and diesel fuel-filter service, so it is estimated somewhat lower. Mercedes dealer labor rates still keep it above a gas Transit.
KBB shows this van at about $24,600 resale after losing 32% ($11,692) over the prior three years, which puts it near $36K at four years old. Interpolating gives roughly $29–31K at the 5-year mark (2023–24) against a ~$44.5K sticker. That figure is inflated by the 2021–23 shortage in used van supply, so it was moderated to ~66%.
The standard Mercedes-Benz Vans basic limited warranty sits at the bottom of the band, level with the Transit and ProMaster.
The 5-year term sits at the low end of the band. Sources disagree on the mileage cap, but the score depends only on the 5-year term.
No scheduled maintenance is included; prepaid maintenance and extended warranties cost extra. Perks amount to 24/7 roadside assistance for the basic-warranty term plus the then-new Mercedes PRO connect trial, which is basic-roadside level only.
$44,500 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (66% retained, or about $29,370) leaves about $15,130 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,800 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $20,930 in total.
6Reliability & QualityGrades below the middle of the scale.1.38D
Neither Consumer Reports nor J.D. Power publishes a model-level prediction for the 2019 Sprinter, so this score rests on indirect signals. MY2019 is the US launch year of the VS30 third generation and carries the heaviest recall load of any Sprinter year. RepairPal rates it only average, and KBB owners name quality as the weakest attribute. Those mixed-to-weak signals put it just below the average band.
Mercedes-Benz has landed below the industry average in recent J.D. Power U.S. Vehicle Dependability Studies, and Consumer Reports ranks it in the lower half of brands. Mercedes vans do better in European fleet surveys, which keeps the brand mid-pack rather than at the bottom.
MY2019 is covered by 51 NHTSA campaigns, the most of any Sprinter year in the feed, and many of them involve core safety systems. Rollaway is recalled twice (the 7-speed park pawl and park-lock software). Steering is recalled several times, including a steering shaft that can disconnect from the gear and two power-steering hose campaigns. Brake recalls cover a loose pedal bolt and leaking rear calipers, and there are separate gasoline fuel-line and fuel-pump campaigns. Together they form a launch-year pattern that is both systemic and repeated.
The scored gas van uses the 2.0L turbo four (188 hp), new with the 2019 VS30, paired with the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic. The engine family is shared across Mercedes products and has no catastrophic failure pattern. It lacks the diesel's long high-mileage fleet record, though, and MY2019 has several recalls on this driveline: two for rollaway (park pawl and park-lock software), one for gasoline fuel-line clamps and one for the fuel pump.
The VS30 Sprinter, with MBUX and Mercedes switchgear, has the most car-like and best-finished cab among full-size work vans, a step above the Transit and ProMaster. Hard, durable plastics cover the lower cabin and work zones, which is normal for the class.
Reviewers find the cab tight and quiet, but as a launch year MY2019 has a long list of assembly-error recalls, which points to inconsistent production quality. They include loose hood-catch and steering-bearing screws, wrong leaf-spring shims, missing frame reinforcements and partition bolts, misrouted seat harnesses, and vans that left the reassembly plant without final quality inspection.
Sales and service run through a dedicated Mercedes-Benz Vans network of a few hundred US locations. That covers metro areas adequately but is far thinner than the thousands of Ford and Ram dealers that service the Transit and ProMaster, so rural fleets face longer trips and waits.
Parts come largely from dealers at premium prices, and the independent aftermarket, centered on upfitters and campers, is smaller than for the Transit or ProMaster. The gas van avoids the diesel's DEF/SCR and injector costs, but unscheduled repair costs still run above the class average.
7Technology & InfotainmentGrades below the middle of the scale.1.33D
The 2019 launch brought first-generation MBUX to the Sprinter with a 7-inch touchscreen on the volume build. A 10.25-inch display, which adds navigation, was optional.
First-generation MBUX debuted in the 2019 van and was the most polished interface in a work van that year, with logical menus and touch controls on the steering wheel. The base 7-inch unit is plain.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were wired only and came with the MBUX option. Wireless projection did not arrive until the 2025 update.
The 'Hey Mercedes' natural-language assistant and MBUX navigation are good for the class, but navigation comes only with the optional 10.25-inch screen.
The standard audio is adequate for speech and radio. No branded premium system was offered, and sound thins out in the large rear cabin.
Analog gauges flank a color multifunction display. A full digital cluster arrived only with the 2025 update.
MBUX and Mercedes PRO connect support over-the-air map and infotainment updates, but vehicle functions are not updated or added remotely.
Mercedes PRO connect, launched with the 2019 van, covers remote lock/unlock and vehicle location and status, plus fleet tools for businesses. Some services require a subscription.
MBUX adds USB-C ports, a 12V outlet is standard, and a wireless-charging tray is an inexpensive option. The rear rows get few ports, and no 120V outlet is standard.
Remote keyless entry is standard, but the volume trim uses a key to start. KEYLESS-GO proximity entry and push-button start are options.
A rear camera is standard. A 360-degree camera and parking sensors come in the optional Parking Package.
The Sprinter offers no head-up display.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.00C
The 12-passenger gas van has room for car seats in several rows and a wide sliding door. The step-in is high, and the benches are heavy and awkward to remove.
Crosswind Assist and a rear camera are standard, but NHTSA credits the 2019 vans with neither forward collision warning nor lane departure warning. Active Brake Assist and Blind Spot Assist were extra-cost options, and the van has no NHTSA or IIHS crash ratings.
Twelve seats and rear auxiliary climate carry a large group, with some room left behind the last row. Rear amenities are basic, with few ports and lightly padded benches.
Car-like controls and a smooth 9-speed automatic, exclusive to the gas engine in 2019, make it the easiest full-size van to live with. Its size and height still make every trip a deliberate one.
At about 16 MPG on premium fuel it is an expensive commuter, though the gas engine avoids diesel and DEF costs.
A 40.7-foot turning circle is reasonable for a 144-inch van, but a height of around 8 feet rules out many garages and parking structures. The optional 360-degree camera helps.
The 319–374 cu ft cargo box carries well, but the gas van is limited to 1500/2500 bodies with 5,000 lb towing, and 188 hp is modest under a full load. Higher ratings require the V6 diesel.
The Sprinter is a benchmark fleet van with a long upfit history, and the gas engine avoids diesel aftertreatment. But 2019 was the first year of an all-new generation and its first US gas engine, with early recall activity and a small turbo four that works hard in loaded duty.
The upfit ecosystem is excellent, with the Master Upfitter program, tie-down prep, multiple roof heights and lengths, and Mercedes PRO connect fleet telematics. Choosing the gas engine narrows the body options.
Good front seats help on long drives, but DISTRONIC is optional, range is about 350 miles, and the gas engine revs hard at speed. It falls short of the diesel as a mile-eater.
It is a great camper-conversion base with a huge aftermarket, but the gas van is RWD only and ground clearance is limited. The 4x4 did not arrive on the third-generation US van until the 2020 model year, and then only with the diesel.
With the benches removed it is an enormous box, and the wide-swinging rear doors and sliding side door take bulky gear easily.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the Sprinter's strongest categories.2.05C
It has the best body control of the full-size vans, but it is still a tall, heavy commercial vehicle with a high center of gravity.
The electric power steering, new with this generation, is light and predictable with decent on-center feel, though it gives little feedback.
The four-wheel disc brakes give strong, well-modulated stops. Active Brake Assist was an option, and NHTSA lists no forward collision warning on the 2019 vans.
The 9-speed is smooth and quick to shift. The 188-hp gas four is refined at light throttle but has to rev hard and feels short of breath in a loaded 12-passenger van.
The gas engine has none of the diesel's clatter and idles smoothly, but it gets buzzy at high revs under load.
On the 144-inch wheelbase the turning circle is tight for a full-size van, though still near the wide end of the van band. The 170-inch body needs far more room.
The tall, commanding seat, tilt/telescoping wheel and car-like controls are strengths. The bulkhead limits front legroom, and the parking brake is mechanical.
It is pleasant to drive for a van, but it feels like an appliance.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Sprinter's strongest categories.2.33C+
The 2019 VS30 gas Sprinter comes with a 188-hp 2.0L turbo I4, an automatic transmission, Active Brake Assist and Crosswind Assist. MBUX, comfort features and most driver aids are costly packages, so equipment is competitive for a work van but sparse for the premium price.
At about $36.2K delivered, the 2019 gas 2500 is the cheapest Sprinter of the VS30 era, a few hundred dollars under the 2020 van. It still offers only 188 hp against the Transit's 275-hp V6, so it is fair value rather than a bargain. Resale has held strongly.
It has the broadest lineup in the segment. The 45 priced configurations span 1500/2500/3500/3500XD/4500 weight classes; cargo, crew, passenger and cab-chassis bodies; two roof heights; 144"/170" wheelbases plus an extended body; gas I4 or V6 diesel; and RWD or 4x4.
Sprinter sales rose in the generation's launch year, but it remained a distant second-tier seller in a 419K-unit segment that the Transit dominated with roughly 154K units.
The three-pointed star and the Sprinter's status as the default base for van-life conversions and luxury shuttles give it an image no rival van matches. The gas cargo version wears the same badge but has less of the diesel's camper-market cachet.
As an all-new launch-year model with strong demand from fleets (including the Amazon contract), discounting was limited at first. Mercedes-Benz Vans still ran commercial lease and finance offers and upfit allowances, with nothing like the inventory squeeze that came later.
MY2019 is the first year of the all-new VS30 third generation. It brought a new platform, MBUX, the Mercedes PRO connect telematics service, the new gas I4 and modern driver-assist hardware, with years of the cycle still ahead.
Reviewers rate the VS30 Sprinter among the best large vans for space, handling, visibility and customization. Weak gas acceleration and below-average reliability ratings hold it back, and it is rarely the value pick over the Transit.
