The verdict

A struggling full-size van, strong on space and held back by efficiency.

The 2020 Sprinter is the most car-like, best-finished and most configurable full-size van of its era. It offers 44 priced configurations, up to 533 cu ft of cargo space and a 12-seat passenger version. The gas 2500 is the weak link: 188 hp, roughly 11 seconds to 60 mph, about 16 MPG on premium fuel and RWD only. MY2020 is also covered by 25 NHTSA recall campaigns, the most of any third-generation year. Buy one for the cab, the space and the upfit options, and have a pre-purchase inspection confirm that every recall has been completed.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainOne of the Sprinter's weakest categories.0.39F
Horsepower
188 hp (2.0L turbo gas I4, 2500 RWD); 3.0L V6 diesel also 188 hp — range max
10/100
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

MY2020 is the second year of the third-generation (VS30, 2019–) Sprinter, a carry-over year for the gas engine. The scored 2.0L turbo gas four makes 188 hp, the same peak as the 3.0L V6 diesel, near the bottom of the van band.

Torque
258 lb-ft (gas); V6 diesel 325 lb-ft
35/100
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

The gas engine's 258 lb-ft trails the V6 diesel's 325 lb-ft and is modest for a loaded full-size van.

0–60 mph time
~11 s (gas 2500 RWD, unladen; not published by Mercedes)
0/100
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Mercedes publishes no 0–60 time and no US instrumented test of the 2020 gas van was found. With 188 hp and roughly 5,800–6,000 lb curb weight, about 11 seconds unladen is consistent with comparable vans and beyond the slow end of the van band.

Powertrain refinement66
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

The turbo gas four is quieter and smoother than the diesels, but it has to rev hard to move a heavy van and fades with cargo aboard. It feels underpowered next to the Transit's 275-hp V6.

Transmission behavior76
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

The gas Sprinter uses the 9G-TRONIC nine-speed automatic, which shifts smoothly and quickly, and its close ratios help the small engine. The V6 diesel still used the older seven-speed.

Max towing capacity
5,000 lbs (gas); up to 7,500 lbs on V6 diesel
57/100
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

The gas engine is rated to tow 5,000 lbs when properly equipped. The 7,500-lb rating belongs to V6 diesel configurations, which the scored gas van can't be ordered as.

AWD/4WD availability38
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

A selectable 4x4 with low range was available for 2020, but only with the V6 diesel. The gas van is RWD-only, so 4x4 covers a narrow slice of the lineup.

Off-road capability32

The RWD gas van is built for pavement, with no skid plates, lockers or low range and limited clearance on a long wheelbase. Only the diesel 4x4, with low range and extra ride height, can handle loose surfaces.

Powertrain lineup breadth55
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

The 2020 US lineup was combustion-only: the 188-hp gas I4 and the 188-hp/325-lb-ft V6 diesel (RWD or 4x4), with a 161-hp four-cylinder diesel added to cargo vans late in 2020. The eSprinter was sold only in Europe, so there was no US electrified option.

3SafetyGrades below the middle of the scale.1.35D
NHTSA overall rating
Not rated by NHTSA (est. 4 stars); 15-passenger rollover rated 1 star
50/100
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

NHTSA lists the 2020 Sprinter 2500 cargo and 15-passenger vans as Not Rated for overall, frontal and side crash. The value is the segment-norm estimate used for the Sprinter's other third-generation years, not a measured result, and the 15-passenger van's 1-star rollover rating is a real warning.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness50
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

IIHS has never crash-tested the third-generation (VS30, 2019–) Sprinter, so there is no award to credit. The score stays at the segment norm because the airbag suite and stability control are standard and no structural concerns are documented.

Standard ADAS suite breadth48
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

ESP stability control, Crosswind Assist and a rear camera are standard. NHTSA records forward collision warning and lane departure warning as 'No' on the 2020 cargo and passenger vans, against 'Optional' for 2021. Active Brake Assist, Blind Spot Assist and DISTRONIC were extra-cost Mercedes options, so the volume gas 2500 cargo van ships with almost no active assistance.

Automatic emergency braking performance50
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

Radar-based Active Brake Assist was offered on the third-generation Sprinter, but NHTSA does not credit the 2020 US vans with forward collision warning. IIHS has published no front crash prevention results, so its performance is unverified and most volume vans lack it.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage55
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

Blind Spot Assist was a separately priced option on 2020 US Sprinters, with no standard rear cross-traffic braking. Sideguard Assist did not reach the US options list until later.

Lane keeping & centering50
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

Active Lane Keeping Assist was an option, but NHTSA lists no lane departure warning for the 2020 vans, so few were equipped with it. Where fitted, it nudges the van back from lane edges rather than centering it continuously.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist60
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

Active Distance Assist DISTRONIC is Mercedes' mature radar adaptive cruise and works well with the gas van's 9G-TRONIC automatic. It was an option rather than standard, and there was no integrated steering-assist highway mode.

Hands-free driving availability5
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

The 2020 Sprinter offers no hands-free highway driving system, and DISTRONIC requires hands on the wheel.

Headlight performance52
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

Volume cargo builds have halogen headlamps, while LED high-performance headlamps and Headlight Assist (auto high beam) are options. IIHS has never rated the Sprinter's headlights.

Outward visibility68
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

A tall seating position, deep windshield and large split mirrors give strong forward and side sightlines. Windowless cargo bodies are blind at the rear quarters and rely on the standard rear camera, with a 360-degree camera optional.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability56
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

Passenger and Crew configurations have rear benches with child-seat anchors, and the wide sliding door and tall cabin make installation easy. The volume 2500 cargo van has only front seats, so it has no LATCH positions.

The bulkhead and upright seating position hold front legroom below what car-based vans offer.

Rear headroom
~45 in (2nd row, standard-roof Passenger Van); more on high roof
52/100
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

The flat standard roof carries most of the cab headroom through to the second row. Mercedes publishes no second-row figure, so this is an estimate.

Rear legroom
~36 in (2nd-row bench, 12-passenger 144" WB)
50/100
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

The four-row, 12-seat layout leaves each row legroom that adults can use but that is not generous. Mercedes publishes no figure.

Third-row usability72
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

The 12-passenger van's third and fourth benches seat adults thanks to the full-height roof. Access is through the sliding door with a tall step, and the benches are basic with no recline.

Cargo/trunk volume
319 cu ft (144" WB standard roof box); 374 cu ft high roof; far less behind the last row with all 12 seats in place
63/100
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

Graded on the 144-inch standard-roof cargo box, the same basis as the other third-generation Sprinter years. With all four Passenger rows installed, only a modest area remains behind the last bench.

Max cargo volume
533 cu ft (170" Extended WB high roof cargo)
81/100
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

The extended high-roof body has one of the largest cargo boxes in the class. That is the nameplate maximum; the gas 2500 comes in fewer lengths.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions66
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

There is a dash-top tray, overhead and door bins, and an optional smartphone tray with wireless charging. Rear passengers get little dedicated storage, and no household outlet is standard.

Seat comfort70
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

The well-bolstered front seats are widely seen as the best in a full-size van. The Passenger Van's rear benches are upright and lightly padded.

Ride quality68
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

The ride is more composed than the ProMaster's and on par with the Transit's. A lightly loaded van is still firm over broken pavement.

Cabin quietness60
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

The gas four idles more quietly than the diesels but revs hard under load, and the large, tall body lets wind and road noise into the passenger area.

Climate & comfort features58
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

Passenger Vans get rear auxiliary climate, and cruise control, a tilt/telescoping wheel and heated mirrors are standard. Heated seats, a heated wheel and automatic climate are options, and ventilated seats are not offered.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Sprinter's weakest categories.1.17D
Base MSRP
35,690 $ (2020 Sprinter 1500 Cargo, Standard Roof, 144" WB, RWD — $34,495 + $1,195 destination); gas 2500 144" cargo $36,915
73/100
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

The cheapest 2020 Sprinter is the 1500 standard-roof 144-inch cargo van. The gas 2.0L I4 2500 cargo van starts $1,225 higher, and destination is $1,195 on every trim, $500 less than the 2021 charge.

Volume-Trim Price
~45,500 $ (gas 2500 Cargo, High Roof, 170" WB, typically optioned; $42,245 base incl. destination)
55/100
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Among gas vans, the high-roof 170-inch 2500 cargo is the most common upfit spec. It starts at $42,245 delivered, and common packages (driver assistance, MBUX upgrades, partitions) bring typical stickers to about $45.5K.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~5,800 $ over 5 years (~1,160 $/yr; gas I4)
57/100
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

CarEdge projects about $6,200 over five years for the Sprinter 2500, but that model-level figure is dominated by diesel vans. The gas I4 avoids DEF and diesel fuel-filter service, so it is estimated somewhat lower, while Mercedes dealer labor rates keep it above a gas Transit.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~52% of MSRP after 5 years (2020 2500 High Roof 170" cargo; KBB resale ~$26,900 at ~6 years)
40/100
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

KBB values a 2020 2500 high-roof 170-inch extended cargo van at about $26,900 private party, after a 38% loss over the prior three years. Against a typically optioned sticker that implies roughly half retained at the 5-year mark, typical for a commercial cargo van without the passenger/camper premium.

Basic warranty
3 yr / 36,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
0/100
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

The standard Mercedes-Benz Vans basic limited warranty sits at the bottom of the band, level with the Transit and ProMaster.

Powertrain warranty
5 yr / 100,000 mi (some third-party listings show 60,000 mi)
0/100
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

The 5-year term sits at the low end of the band. The mileage cap differs between sources, but the score depends only on the 5-year term.

Complimentary maintenance & perks45
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

No scheduled maintenance is included; prepaid maintenance and extended warranty plans cost extra. The perks are 24/7 roadside assistance for the basic-warranty term and a Mercedes PRO connect trial, which is the basic-roadside level.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$27,640 (≈$21,840 depreciation + $5,800 maintenance)
58/100
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

$45,500 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (52% retained, or about $23,660) leaves about $21,840 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,800 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $27,640 in total.

6Reliability & QualityGrades below the middle of the scale.1.50D
Predicted reliability50
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

There is no public Consumer Reports or J.D. Power model-level prediction for the 2020 Sprinter, so this score rests on indirect signals. MY2020 is the second year of the VS30 generation and carries the fleet's heaviest recall load. RepairPal-derived ratings are average to below average, and KBB owners name quality as the van's weakest point, so the signals are mixed to weak, at the bottom of the average band.

Brand reliability track record60
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

In recent J.D. Power U.S. Vehicle Dependability Studies Mercedes-Benz has landed below the industry average, and Consumer Reports places it in the lower half of brands. Mercedes vans fare better in European fleet surveys, which keeps the brand mid-pack rather than at the bottom.

Recall & TSB history32
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

MY2020 is covered by 25 NHTSA campaigns, the most of any VS30 year, and many are serious. Rollaway risk was recalled twice: the 7-speed park-pawl recall (22V796000) and a park-lock software recall (21V972000). Braking is the subject of four: a loose brake-pedal retaining bolt (21V152000), leaking rear calipers (20V802000), brake hoses damaged in production (20V631000) and wrong-size discs (21V854000). The rest add power-steering hose detachment (twice), a gasoline fuel-line clamp leak, and repeated camera, cluster and MBUX failures, a pattern that is both systemic and repeated.

Powertrain durability reputation55
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

The scored gas van pairs the 2.0L turbo four (188 hp), new with the 2019 VS30, with the 7G-TRONIC seven-speed automatic. The engine family is shared across Mercedes products and has no catastrophic failure pattern. Weighing against it, the gas Sprinter lacks the diesel's long high-mileage fleet record, and three MY2020 recalls hit this driveline directly: two for rollaway (the 7-speed park pawl and park-lock software) and one for gasoline fuel-line clamps.

Interior material quality74
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

With MBUX and Mercedes switchgear, the Sprinter's cab is the most car-like and best finished of the full-size work vans, a step above the Transit and ProMaster. The lower cabin and the work zones use hard, durable plastics, as expected in the class.

Fit & finish56
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

Reviewers find the cab tight and quiet, but MY2020 carries a long list of assembly-error recalls, which points to inconsistent production quality. The errors include untightened front-door hinge screws, brake hoses damaged on the line, wrong-size brake discs, frame members missing reinforcements, missing partition-wall bolts, a loose propeller-shaft bearing and misrouted seat harnesses. KBB owners rate quality as the weakest attribute.

Dealer & service network58
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

Sales and service run through a dedicated Mercedes-Benz Vans network of a few hundred US locations. That covers metro areas adequately but is far thinner than the thousands of Ford and Ram dealers servicing the Transit and ProMaster, so rural fleets face longer trips and waits.

Parts availability & repair cost45
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Parts come largely from dealers at premium prices, and the independent aftermarket, centred on upfitters and campers, is smaller than for the Transit or ProMaster. The gas van avoids the diesel's DEF/SCR and injector costs, but RepairPal still rates its ownership cost average to below average.

7Technology & InfotainmentGrades below the middle of the scale.1.33D
Touchscreen size

The volume trim has the 7-inch first-generation MBUX touchscreen. A 10.25-inch MBUX display, which brings navigation, was optional.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness66
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

First-generation MBUX was the most polished interface in a 2020 work van, with logical menus and touch controls on the wheel. The base 7-inch unit is plain.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto45
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were wired only and came with the MBUX smartphone-integration option. Wireless projection did not arrive until the 2025 update.

Voice control & native navigation64
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

The "Hey Mercedes" natural-language assistant and the MBUX navigation are good for the class. Navigation comes only with the optional 10.25-inch screen.

Audio system quality48
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

The standard audio is adequate for speech and radio. No branded premium system was offered, and sound thins out in the large rear cabin.

Digital instrument cluster45
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

Analog gauges flank a color multifunction display. A full digital cluster arrived only with the 2025 update.

OTA update capability56
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

MBUX and Mercedes PRO connect support over-the-air map and infotainment updates. Vehicle functions are not updated or added remotely.

Companion app & remote functions68
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

The Mercedes PRO connect app covers remote lock/unlock, vehicle location and status, plus fleet tools for businesses. Some services are subscription-based.

Charging ports & device power58
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

MBUX brings USB-C ports, there is a 12V outlet, and a wireless-charging tray is an inexpensive option. Rear rows get few ports, and no 120V outlet is standard.

Keyless & remote access50
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

Remote keyless entry is standard, but the volume trim starts with a key. KEYLESS-GO proximity entry and push-button start are options.

Camera & parking aids70
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

A rear camera is standard, and a 360-degree camera and parking sensors come in the optional Parking Package.

Head-up display availability10
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

The Sprinter offers no head-up display.

8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.02C
Kid & car-seat practicality52
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

The gas 12-passenger van has room for car seats in several rows and a wide sliding door. The step-in is high and the benches are heavy and awkward to remove.

Family safety package42
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

Crosswind Assist and a rear camera are standard, but NHTSA credits the 2020 vans with neither forward collision warning nor lane departure warning, and Active Brake Assist and Blind Spot Assist were extra-cost options. The van has no NHTSA or IIHS crash ratings.

Family road-trip comfort58
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

Twelve seats and rear auxiliary climate carry a large group, with space behind the last row. Rear amenities are basic, with few ports and lightly padded benches.

Daily driving ease55
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

Car-like controls and a smooth 9-speed make it the easiest full-size van to live with, but its size and height make every trip deliberate.

Commuting cost efficiency42
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

At about 16 MPG on premium fuel it is an expensive commuter, though it avoids diesel and DEF costs. Low 2020 fuel prices softened the bill slightly.

Parking & maneuverability45
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

A 40.7-foot turning circle on the 144-inch van is reasonable for its size, but a height around 8 feet rules out many garages and parking structures. The optional 360-degree camera helps.

Work capability68
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

The 319–374 cu ft box carries well, but the gas van is limited to 1500/2500 bodies with 5,000 lb towing, and 188 hp is modest under full load. Higher ratings need the V6 diesel.

Durability for work duty67
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

It is a benchmark fleet van with a long upfit history, and the gas engine avoids diesel aftertreatment. Early-generation recall activity and a small turbo four that works hard in loaded duty hold it back.

Jobsite & upfit practicality78
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

The upfit ecosystem is excellent, with the Master Upfitter program, tie-down prep and multiple roof heights and lengths. Choosing the gas engine narrows the body options.

Long-distance comfort & range60
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

Good front seats help on long drives, but DISTRONIC is optional, range is about 350 miles, and the gas engine revs hard at speed, so it falls short of the diesel as a mile-eater.

Outdoor & adventure capability64
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

It is a great camper-conversion base with a huge aftermarket, but the gas van is RWD only. The 4x4 with low range came only with the V6 diesel, and ground clearance is limited.

Gear & luggage flexibility86
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

Removing the benches opens a huge box, and the wide-swinging rear doors and sliding side door take bulky gear easily.

9Driving ExperienceOne of the Sprinter's strongest categories.2.05C
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Sprinter's strongest categories.2.19C
Standard equipment generosity52
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

The 2020 gas Sprinter comes with a nine-speed automatic, MBUX-capable infotainment, Active Brake Assist and Crosswind Assist. Comfort, convenience and most driver-assistance features are costly option packages, so equipment is competitive for a work van but sparse for its premium price.

Feature value per dollar55
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

At about $36.9K delivered, the gas I4 2500 is the cheapest Sprinter of the VS30 era, about $2.4K under the 2021 equivalent. It still brings only 188 hp against the Transit's 275-hp V6, so it is fair value rather than a bargain, though resale holds slightly better than later years.

Trim & configuration breadth88
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

It has the broadest lineup in the segment, with 44 priced configurations spanning 1500/2500/3500/3500XD/4500 weight classes in cargo, crew, passenger and cab-chassis bodies, two roof heights, 144"/170" wheelbases plus an extended body, gas I4, diesel I4 and V6 diesel engines, and RWD or 4x4.

Sales popularity & market acceptance50
#3 of 3 vansCompare all →

The Sprinter was a distant number two to the Transit in 2020, a pandemic year that cut van volumes across the segment. Reported Sprinter totals vary by source, but every figure has it well behind Ford.

Brand desirability & image80
#1 of 3 vansCompare all →

The three-pointed star and the Sprinter's status as the default base for van-life conversions and luxury shuttles give it an image no rival van matches. The gas cargo version shares the badge but gets less of the diesel's camper-market cachet.

Deals & incentive availability58
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

Through most of 2020, before the chip shortage, Mercedes-Benz Vans ran commercial lease and financing offers and upfit allowances, and pandemic-softened fleet demand helped buyers negotiate. Discounts were modest rather than deep.

Model freshness65
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

MY2020 is the second year of the VS30 generation launched for 2019, a carry-over year on a current platform with MBUX and modern driver-assist hardware. The 2023 powertrain update was still three years out.

Critical reception & awards64
#2 of 3 vansCompare all →

Reviewers rate the VS30 Sprinter among the best large vans for space, handling, visibility and customization. Weak gas acceleration and below-average reliability ratings hold it back, and it is rarely the value pick over the Transit.
