The verdict
A struggling full-size truck, strong on driving and held back by efficiency.
The 2018 Ram 1500 is the last year of the outgoing fourth-generation truck, and it shows in both directions. Its class-exclusive coil-spring rear suspension gives it a genuinely smoother, quieter ride than leaf-sprung rivals of the era, and the 5.7L HEMI V8 Big Horn can tow up to 10,620 lbs — solid half-ton numbers. But safety tech is notably behind: no standard automatic emergency braking, no lane-keeping at any trim, and Marginal-or-worse IIHS headlight scores across the board, while the HEMI's 17 MPG combined rating runs about $4,450/year in fuel. A well-equipped Big Horn Crew Cab 4x4 lists around $40,000, making this a strong ride-comfort-and-interior value if you don't need the newest driver-assist features — just budget for below-average Consumer Reports brand reliability and a middling 3-year/36,000-mile warranty.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Segment-best ride comfort from the coil-spring rear end
- Strong towing and jobsite practicality
- Easy-to-use Uconnect infotainment
What holds it back
- Safety tech lags the segment badly
- Thirsty at the pump
- Payload trails rivals

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainGrades below the middle of the scale.1.34D
2018 is the final model year of the fourth-generation (DS) Ram 1500 before the all-new fifth-generation (DT) launched as a 2019 model; the HEMI V8 was the dominant upgrade engine and is scored as the volume configuration.
HEMI torque is mid-pack for a half-ton gas V8 of this era; the EcoDiesel actually edges it out at low RPM but is the low-volume option.
Instrumented 0-60 times for the HEMI-powered 4x4 Crew Cab, the most common configuration, cluster in the low-6-second range — competitive for a half-ton V8 of this generation.
The naturally-aspirated HEMI V8 with cylinder deactivation (MDS) delivers smooth, linear power with no turbo lag; the EcoDiesel is torquey but has some diesel clatter/vibration at idle, and the base V6 feels strained towing or at highway passing speed.
The ZF-based 8-speed TorqueFlite automatic (standard with HEMI and EcoDiesel, optional over the 6-speed on some V6 configurations) shifts smoothly and decisively with minimal hunting.
Max conventional tow rating for the model line is solidly mid-pack for a 2018 half-ton, trailing the contemporary F-150's best ratings.
Ram's coil-spring rear suspension (since the 2013 update) favors ride quality over maximum payload, so the line's best payload figure trails leaf-spring rivals of the same era.
A tow/haul mode and an integrated electronic trailer brake controller are available (bundled in a Trailer Tow package on most trims), plus a standard backup camera on higher trims, but there is no trailer backup/reverse-steering assist or trailer-specific camera system — those arrived with the redesigned 2019 DT generation.
4x4 is optional across most trim levels (Tradesman through Limited) with a conventional 2-speed transfer case (shift-on-the-fly on most, electronic on Laramie+), standard on the off-road Rebel; operation is straightforward rather than offering sophisticated terrain-mode selection.
The Rebel trim provides genuine light off-road credibility (raised suspension, off-road-tuned shocks, Off-Road mode, all-terrain tires) but lacks the locking differentials, skid-plate package and extreme-travel suspension of class-leading desert trucks of the era.
Three distinct gas/diesel engines (3.6L V6, 5.7L HEMI V8, 3.0L EcoDiesel V6) cover mainstream needs, but there is no electrified option of any kind for the 2018 model year — eTorque mild-hybrid assist did not arrive until the 2019 redesign.
2Efficiency & RangeThe 1500's lowest-graded category.0.00F
EPA combined rating for the volume HEMI 4x4 configuration, scored against the gas-class truck band.
EPA city figure for the volume HEMI 4x4 configuration.
EPA highway figure for the volume HEMI 4x4 configuration.
Computed from EPA combined MPG and the standard Crew Cab 4x4 fuel tank; a larger optional tank is available on longer-wheelbase configurations.
EPA's annual fuel cost estimate for the volume HEMI configuration sits at the thirsty end of the gas half-ton segment for this period.
The volume 5.7L HEMI and base 3.6L V6 both run on regular unleaded; the EcoDiesel needs diesel fuel, which is widely available but typically priced above regular gas.
3SafetyOne of the 1500's weakest categories.0.37F
NHTSA rated the 2018 Ram 1500 (fourth-generation, pre-DT body) 4 stars overall: 4★ frontal, 5★ side, and a rollover rating that splits by drivetrain — 4★ on 4x2 models, 3★ on 4x4 models due to higher center of gravity.
The 2018 Ram 1500 Crew Cab did not earn IIHS Top Safety Pick (that award came only with the redesigned 2019+ DT generation). Of six crashworthiness tests, two scored Marginal: roof strength (strength-to-weight ratio 2.97, below optimal) and small overlap front driver-side (structure/safety cage rated Poor despite acceptable injury measures) — both called out explicitly in IIHS's own 'key tests' framing. Moderate overlap front, side impact, and head restraints/seats all rated Good.
This is the outgoing fourth-generation body style ahead of the redesigned 2019 DT, and its ADAS suite reflects that: no trim has AEB standard (IIHS did not even rate front crash prevention — 'not available' for this generation), and Forward Collision Warning, Blind Spot Monitoring and Adaptive Cruise Control are all optional, available only as add-on packages on mid-to-upper trims (Big Horn and above), not the Tradesman/Express volume base trim.
IIHS did not rate front crash prevention (vehicle-to-vehicle or pedestrian) for the 2018 Ram 1500 — this generation's optional Forward Collision Warning with Advanced Brake Assist is a warning/brake-assist system, not an independently tested autonomous AEB system, so there is no evidence of a tested autonomous-braking capability at all.
Blind Spot Monitoring with Rear Cross Path and trailer-aware detection is available and notable for covering a trailer's length when towing — a genuine strength for a truck — but it is an optional package rather than available/standard across most trims, and it is alert-only (no active steering/braking intervention).
This generation of Ram 1500 (pre-2019 redesign) has no lane-centering or lane-keep-assist system at any trim — lane departure warning and lane centering were introduced with the redesigned 2019 DT generation's Uconnect/safety-tech refresh. Searches across manufacturer and owner-forum sources turn up no lane-keeping feature for the 2018 model year.
Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go is available as an option on upper trims, giving full-speed-range capability, but there is no combined highway-assist/lane-centering system to pair with it, and it is not available on the volume base trim.
No hands-free highway driving system (e.g. BlueCruise, Super Cruise) exists for this generation or model year; the feature class did not yet exist in the full-size truck segment in 2018.
IIHS rated every 2018 Ram 1500 headlight configuration Marginal or Poor — Marginal for the halogen reflector units on lower/volume trims (Tradesman, Express, Big Horn, SLT), and Poor for the halogen projector units with auto high-beam/curve-adaptive features on upper trims, meaning the nominally 'better' headlight option actually scored worse.
Reviewers note good forward and side visibility aided by large mirrors, and the Crew Cab's longer rear windows help offset the typical truck blind-spot issue, though the high beltline and thick D-pillar common to the segment still limit rearward sightlines somewhat.
LATCH lower anchors are present and functional across cab configurations with rear seats, but IIHS and owner reports both flag the tether anchors as hard to locate and easily confused with other rear-seat hardware, making installation workable but not easy.
4Space & ComfortOne of the 1500's strongest categories.2.14C
Volume Big Horn Crew Cab seats six with the standard front split bench; bucket-seat trims drop to five.
Generous front headroom typical of the final-year DS-generation cab.
Front legroom on the outgoing DS-generation cab trails the segment's 43-45 in figures, though seat travel feels adequate in practice.
Plenty of second-row headroom for adults in the volume Crew Cab.
Solid second-row legroom for the final year of the outgoing-generation Crew Cab, though short of the redesigned 2019 truck's class-leading figure.
The volume Crew Cab ships with the short 5'7" box; the longer 6'4" box is offered on Crew and Quad Cab.
Typical short-box crew-cab bed volume for the segment; the longer box adds meaningfully more cargo space.
The available RamBox lockable, illuminated, drainable bed-side bins with a 115V outlet are a genuine segment differentiator, but RamBox and the bulk of the clever storage sit on optional packages rather than the base volume trim.
Reviewers consistently rate the Ram's front and rear seats among the segment's more comfortable, with supportive cushions on volume trims and well-bolstered leather on upper trims.
The coil-spring rear suspension gives the 2018 Ram 1500 a smoother, more car-like ride than its leaf-spring rivals, widely cited as the segment benchmark; available air suspension sharpens this further on upper trims.
The Ram 1500 is regarded as a quiet cab by full-size truck standards for its generation, aided by the coil-spring rear suspension reducing road noise, though wind/tire noise is still present at highway speed.
Heated front and rear seats, heated steering wheel, and ventilated front seats (leather-equipped trims only) are available, but these remain optional on upper trims (Laramie and above) rather than widely available on the volume Big Horn.
5Cost of OwnershipGrades below the middle of the scale.1.36D
Entry-level 2018 Ram 1500 Tradesman Regular Cab 4x2 starting price before options.
Big Horn (and Lone Star in the South) was the best-selling 2018 Ram 1500 trim, most commonly ordered as a Crew Cab 4x4 with the 5.7L HEMI V8.
Industry class-data estimate for a full-size half-ton pickup of this generation; in line with segment norms for a body-on-frame truck with a proven HEMI/8-speed drivetrain.
Full-size half-ton trucks hold value well versus cars; Ram 1500 retention is solid but trails F-150 and sits roughly on par with Silverado for this generation.
Standard FCA/Ram new-vehicle limited warranty for model year 2018, matching segment norms.
Standard FCA/Ram powertrain limited warranty covering engine, transmission, and drivetrain for 2018, matching segment norms (below the 10-year Hyundai/Kia standard but typical for domestic full-size trucks).
No complimentary scheduled maintenance was standard on the 2018 Ram 1500 — only the 5-year/60,000-mile basic roadside assistance bundled with the warranty. This trails rivals that bundle a couple of years of free oil changes, placing it in the 'basic roadside only' band.
$40,415 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (50% retained, or about $20,208) leaves about $20,208 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,975 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $26,183 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.03C
The two major predicted-reliability sources disagree for this generation: J.D. Power rated the 2018 Ram 1500 81/100 ('Great') and #2 Large Light-Duty Pickup of 2018, while Consumer Reports' subscriber survey has historically placed Ram 1500 below-average, in line with FCA brands sitting in the bottom third of CR's 2018 rankings.
Consumer Reports' 2018 brand reliability rankings placed Ram in roughly the 25th-28th position of 29 ranked brands, with every FCA brand occupying the bottom third — a consistent multi-year pattern for the company through this period, not a one-year dip.
The only recall confirmed against 2018-built production (side curtain airbag inflators that could rupture from a supplier manufacturing defect) was narrow — roughly 666 units built May-June 2018 — and unrelated to the broader Takata crisis; the generation's other recall activity (tailgate, wiring) is typical for a decade-long platform rather than systemic. TSB activity on the new-for-this-generation 8-speed automatic (harsh/delayed shifts, addressed by TCM software recalibration) is a known pattern but a drivability complaint, not a safety campaign.
The 5.7L HEMI V8 (in production since 2003) carries a strong high-mileage durability reputation by 2018, but its pairing with the then-new-to-this-generation 8-speed automatic (ZF-derived 850RE) drew repeated owner complaints of hesitation, harsh downshifts and delayed engagement — generally traced to adaptive-learning/software calibration rather than internal transmission damage, and resolved by TSB rather than indicating a weak hardware design.
The 2018 Ram 1500 was singled out as the only truck on Autotrader's '10 Best Car Interiors Under $50,000' list, with reviewers noting premium materials uncommon for the segment even on mid-level trims, though base-level Tradesman/Big Horn-tier trims still carry hard plastics and lower-grade seat fabric typical of the class.
Reviewers describe interior fit and finish as strong and the cabin as quiet at speed, consistent with a mature, decade-into-production platform by its final model year — no notable pattern of panel-gap or rattle complaints surfaced in owner/press coverage, matched by the J.D. Power 'Great' overall quality score.
Ram's dealer footprint has historically run smaller than Ford's and Chevrolet's — still a substantial nationwide network sufficient for mainstream ownership, but FCA has typically trailed Toyota/Honda in J.D. Power customer service satisfaction studies through this period, making coverage adequate rather than class-leading.
RepairPal rates the Ram 1500 3.5/5 overall with an average annual repair cost of $670 (below the full-size-truck average) and fewer unscheduled shop visits per year than the segment average, and as one of the best-selling pickups in America it carries an enormous aftermarket parts ecosystem alongside standard Mopar dealer parts supply.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the 1500's weakest categories.0.97F
The volume Big Horn ships with a smaller base touchscreen; the widely-optioned 8.4-inch Uconnect 4C display is a common step-up but not standard equipment on the volume trim.
Uconnect is widely praised as one of the best, most intuitive systems of its era; Edmunds gave the 2018 Ram 1500 a 9.0/10 ease-of-use rating and reviewers describe it as 'practically explaining itself', though AAA testing flagged high cognitive demand for in-screen dialing and audio programming tasks.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are available on the 8.4-inch Uconnect 4C system, but only in wired form in 2018 — wireless projection did not arrive on Ram until the redesigned 2019 DT generation.
Uconnect's voice command and the optional Uconnect 4C Nav navigation are functional and well-regarded for the era, though most owners still default to phone-projected navigation.
Base audio is adequate, with an available Alpine premium audio system on upper trims providing a meaningful step up, in line with full-size truck norms of the period.
The 2018 Ram 1500 offers a 7-inch configurable EVIC display nested in an otherwise analog gauge cluster, available mainly on Laramie and above — not the full-digital cluster some rivals were beginning to offer, and absent on the volume Big Horn trim.
2018-era Uconnect has no whole-vehicle over-the-air update capability; map and software updates require a USB download or dealer visit, well behind the OTA capability some competitors were beginning to roll out.
The Uconnect/Ram app (powered by AT&T and SiriusXM Guardian for 2018-and-up models) supports remote start, lock/unlock and horn/light flash where equipped, but functionality requires an active Uconnect Access/SiriusXM Guardian subscription and lacks a true digital key.
USB charging ports are present but limited to front-row USB-A outlets plus a 115V household outlet on RamBox-equipped trucks; no factory wireless charging pad was offered until the redesigned 2019 model year.
Keyless entry and remote start are available and common on mid-and-up trims, with the companion app adding phone-based remote start, but proximity/push-button entry is not standard across the whole volume-trim lineup.
A rearview backup camera and ParkSense rear (and optional front) ultrasonic sensors are available, but no surround/360-degree camera system existed on the Ram 1500 until the redesigned 2019 generation.
No head-up display was offered on any 2018 Ram 1500 trim; Ram did not introduce HUD until the 2021 model year.
8Use-Case FitOne of the 1500's strongest categories.2.10C
The Crew Cab's wide-opening rear doors, flat floor and generous 40.3-inch rear legroom make LATCH installs and stroller loading straightforward, though the high step-in and bed-only cargo (no enclosed trunk) are mild everyday friction points versus an SUV.
Blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warning and adaptive cruise are available on the 2018 Ram 1500, but most of that ADAS suite sits on optional packages for Laramie and above rather than standard on the family-priced Big Horn, and rear-seat alert was not yet offered.
The coil-spring ride, quiet cabin and roomy Crew Cab make the 2018 Ram 1500 a comfortable multi-hour hauler for four, though rear-seat entertainment/climate amenities are limited versus three-row SUVs and cargo competes with towing/bed gear rather than an enclosed trunk.
Accurate steering, composed handling 'by truck standards' and a smooth 8-speed automatic make daily traffic manageable, but the Crew Cab's size, turning circle and unladen bed-end skip over rough pavement still cost some ease versus smaller vehicles.
Full-size, body-on-frame truck fuel economy (high-teens to low-20s MPG depending on engine) and truck-level tire/consumable costs make the gas-powered 2018 Ram 1500 an expensive daily commuter relative to a car or crossover.
A roughly 45-foot curb-to-curb turning diameter and 229-inch overall length make the Crew Cab cumbersome in tight urban parking; available rear ParkSense sensors and a backup camera help but there was no 360-degree camera on this generation.
A 5.7L HEMI V8 Big Horn tows up to roughly 10,620-10,640 lbs and carries up to 1,880 lbs payload (3.6L V6) — solidly capable for real work but a few hundred to over a thousand pounds behind the class-leading Ford F-150/Chevrolet Silverado of the same period.
J.D. Power predicted reliability of 4/5 and widespread owner reports of high-mileage dependability support a solid, if not class-leading, work-duty durability reputation for the outgoing DS-generation Ram 1500.
The available RamBox lockable/drainable bed bins with a 115V outlet, cargo rails, sliding tie-down cleats and a bed divider/extender give the 2018 Ram 1500 a genuinely rich jobsite feature set versus rivals, though RamBox itself is an option rather than standard.
The smooth coil-spring ride and quiet cabin make the 2018 Ram 1500 a strong highway mile-eater, and available adaptive cruise reduces fatigue, but fuel economy limits range between stops relative to smaller vehicles and ADAS suites trail the newest rivals.
Available 4x4 with a two-speed transfer case, solid ground clearance and strong towing for toy haulers/trailers make the 2018 Ram 1500 a capable adventure enabler, though it lacks dedicated off-road hardware (locking diffs, skid plates) outside the Power Wagon/Rebel-adjacent trims of the period.
A 5'7"-6'4" open bed plus optional RamBox side bins and a multifunction-capable tailgate handle bulky gear well, though an open bed demands a cover or RamBox for weather protection that an SUV's enclosed cargo area doesn't.
9Driving ExperienceThe 1500's best-graded category.2.43C+
Reviewers consistently describe the 2018 Ram 1500 as secure and composed 'by truck standards,' with body roll reined in better than its leaf-sprung rivals thanks to the coil-spring rear end, though it remains a large, heavy pickup rather than an agile vehicle.
The electric power steering is accurate and well-weighted for a full-size truck, praised as 'great steering' by reviewers, though it delivers little genuine road feedback as with most trucks of this era.
Brakes are described as providing good stopping power even while towing, with a firm, confidence-inspiring pedal typical of the segment, though not singled out as class-leading.
The ZF-derived 8-speed automatic is widely praised as smooth-shifting and quick to find the right gear regardless of engine choice, and the 5.7L HEMI V8/3.6L Pentastar combination delivers refined, well-calibrated power delivery for the segment.
The HEMI V8 has a pleasant, muted exhaust note under normal driving and the cabin is quiet overall per period reviews, though the V8 becomes audible under hard acceleration or towing load as expected of a full-size truck engine.
A roughly 45-foot turning diameter for the volume 4x4 Crew Cab is on the wide end for the full-size truck segment, reflecting the long wheelbase of the Crew Cab body style.
A commanding seating position, wide range of power seat/pedal adjustment on upper trims, and a logically laid-out dash with physical climate controls make the cab comfortable to drive from, though entry/exit height is tall for shorter drivers without running boards.
Period reviews call the Ram 'a stylish and fun truck' with engaging steering and a strong available HEMI V8 soundtrack, giving it more personality than some segment rivals, though it remains a work-oriented pickup rather than a genuinely sporty vehicle.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.05C
Base Tradesman was work-grade sparse (vinyl floors, 5-inch Uconnect), but the volume Big Horn trim added cloth buckets, remote keyless entry and a 7-inch touchscreen at a competitive price point versus F-150 XLT and Silverado LT — competitive but not class-leading.
The Ram's class-exclusive coil-spring rear suspension and available air suspension delivered a best-in-class ride and notably refined interior for the money, a standout differentiator reviewers repeatedly called out relative to price.
11 trim levels (Tradesman through Laramie Limited plus Rebel) across Regular, Quad and Crew Cab bodies, two bed lengths, 4x2/4x4, and three engines (3.6L V6, 5.7L HEMI V8, 3.0L EcoDiesel V6) — one of the widest configuration spreads in the segment.
377,286 units sold in 2018 (+15% YoY) kept the Ram 1500 the #3 full-size pickup behind the F-150 and Silverado, with strong momentum heading into the 2019 redesign — a steady, rising mid-pack seller rather than a segment leader.
Ram had built solid brand equity on ride comfort and interior quality by 2018 but still trailed Ford and Chevy's longer truck heritage and loyalty base — a neutral-to-positive but not aspirational image.
As the outgoing generation facing imminent replacement by the all-new 2019 DT, 2018 Ram 1500s carried heavier-than-typical factory incentives and dealer discounting to clear inventory — a genuine buyer benefit.
2018 is the final model year of the fourth generation (DS/D2, launched 2009, facelifted 2013) — a 9-year-old platform sold alongside dealer knowledge that an all-new fifth-generation (DT) was about to launch for 2019. This is squarely an aging, soon-to-be-replaced generation.
Reviewers (Motor Trend, Car and Driver, Edmunds) consistently praised ride quality and interior refinement, but the outgoing 2018 generation did not win major truck-of-the-year honors that year — those accolades went to the redesigned 2019 Ram that followed immediately after. Well-reviewed but not the comparison-test winner in its final season.
