The verdict
A mixed-report full-size truck, strong on value and held back by efficiency.
The all-new fifth-generation 2019 Ram 1500 nails the truck basics that matter day to day — a coil-spring ride that's genuinely smoother than its leaf-sprung rivals, 45.2 inches of rear legroom, and up to 12,750 lbs of max towing — and backed that up with a Motor Trend Truck of the Year win over a redesigned Silverado and the F-150. The tradeoffs are the usual half-ton gas-V8 ones: 19 MPG combined, roughly $4,000 a year in fuel, and a lot of the safety tech bundled into option packages rather than standard. As a launch-year redesign it also carries no multi-year reliability track record yet and Ram's brand dependability history trails Ford and Toyota.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Serious half-ton towing and work capability
- Class-leading ride comfort
- Class-leading rear-seat legroom
What holds it back
- Thirsty by commuter standards
- No proven reliability track record yet, and a brand that trails on dependability
- Key driver-assist tech is optional, not standard

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.03C
2019 is the DT-generation launch year; the 5.7L HEMI carries over its well-established output, mid-pack among full-size truck V8s and well short of the diesel/EV-class trucks now in the peer set.
Strong low-end torque for a naturally aspirated V8 but behind the segment's diesel and eTorque-boosted variants (eTorque adds up to 130 lb-ft of supplemental torque, not reflected in this base-engine peak figure).
Mid-pack for a half-ton V8 4x4 crew cab; period instrumented tests of comparably configured 5.7L HEMI 4x4 Ram 1500s cluster in the low-to-mid 6s.
The 5.7L HEMI V8 delivers smooth, linear power with minimal lag; MDS cylinder-deactivation transitions are largely unnoticeable in normal driving, and launch-year reviews praised the engine's refinement relative to rivals. The optional eTorque mild-hybrid system (new for 2019) further smooths stop-start and low-speed response on V6/V8 trims that select it.
The ZF-derived 8-speed automatic (TorqueFlite 8HP75) shifts crisply and rarely hunts for gears, widely praised at launch as one of the best transmissions in the full-size truck segment.
2019 was the launch year of the DT-generation Ram 1500, which raised max trailer towing to 12,750 lbs when properly equipped alongside a roughly 225 lb weight reduction versus the outgoing generation.
The DT-generation redesign increased payload to 2,300 lbs for 2019, a meaningful gain over the outgoing generation, though the 4x4 crew-cab volume configuration itself carries noticeably less.
Core towing aids are present at launch (integrated trailer brake controller available, Class IV hitch, 7/4-pin wiring, blind-spot monitoring with trailer-length sensing, available surround-view camera) but the 2019 model year predates Ram's automated trailer backup/reverse-guidance tech, which arrived in later model years.
4x4 is optional (not standard) across nearly every 2019 Ram 1500 trim, with an electronic shift-on-the-fly transfer case and 2-speed low range on most 4x4 setups, plus more sophisticated terrain/off-road modes on the new Rebel trim.
The Rebel trim (carried into the new DT generation for 2019) brings genuine off-road hardware — factory lift, 33-inch all-terrain tires, electronically locking rear differential, front/transfer-case/fuel-tank skid plates, Bilstein monotube shocks, and hill-descent control — though it stops short of a Raptor-class dedicated desert-running variant (the TRX arrived for 2021).
2019 offers two engine families — the 3.6L Pentastar V6 and 5.7L HEMI V8, each available with or without the new eTorque 48V mild-hybrid assist — covering mainstream needs with an electrified option, but narrower than later model years: the 3.0L EcoDiesel V6 was dropped for 2019 and did not return until 2020.
2Efficiency & RangeThe 1500's lowest-graded category.0.72F
Typical for a half-ton V8 4x4; the gas V6 and diesel/HFE variants score meaningfully better but are not the volume gas-V8 configuration being scored.
City economy for a half-ton V8 4x4 is unremarkable but in line with segment expectations for this configuration.
Highway economy is solid for a V8 4x4 half-ton, aided by the DT generation's weight reduction and 8-speed automatic.
A 26-gallon fuel tank is standard on Crew Cab 4x4 configurations; combined with the 19 MPG combined EPA rating this yields a typical full-tank range in the high-400-mile range, roughly mid-pack for a full-size gas truck.
Annual fuel cost for the volume 4x4 V8 configuration sits toward the higher end for full-size gas trucks, consistent with its 19 MPG combined rating.
Both the 3.6L Pentastar V6 and 5.7L HEMI V8 (with or without eTorque) run on regular unleaded gasoline, with flex-fuel (E85) capability available on some configurations — no premium fuel requirement anywhere in the lineup.
3SafetyGrades below the middle of the scale.1.33D
NHTSA's own ratings pages blocked automated access (403); figure corroborated by secondary aggregator reporting on the fifth-generation (DT) 2019 Ram 1500 Crew Cab NCAP results.
All-new fifth-generation 2019 Ram 1500 Crew Cab earned Good ratings in every IIHS crashworthiness test, including driver AND passenger-side small overlap front — a first for a full-size pickup — but headlights rated Marginal (Poor on early-build LED projector units) and child-seat anchor ease rated Marginal kept it from any Top Safety Pick award.
On the volume Big Horn/Lone Star trim, AEB/forward collision warning, adaptive cruise, blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are all optional (bundled into Technology/Safety Group packages), not standard; Ram's own materials advertise '100+ available' features, implying availability rather than standard equipment.
IIHS rated the optional Full-Speed Forward Collision Warning Plus system 'Superior' for vehicle-to-vehicle front crash prevention (able to stop from up to 25 mph), but the system was not rated for pedestrian detection, so there is no credit for night/pedestrian performance.
Blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-path detection was new for this generation and notably trailer-aware (auto-adjusts coverage to trailer length), a genuine segment strength, but it remains an optional feature rather than standard across the lineup.
LaneSense Lane Departure Warning with Lane Keep Assist provides steering-wheel-tug intervention rather than true lane centering, and is only available on Laramie and above — unavailable on the volume Big Horn/Lone Star trim at all.
Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop, Go and Hold is capable down to a full stop, but it is an optional feature with no combined highway/lane-centering assist package offered for 2019.
No hands-free highway driving system (no equivalent to BlueCruise/Super Cruise) was offered on the 2019 Ram 1500 at any trim level.
IIHS rated headlights Marginal on most configurations (including the volume trim) and Poor on early-production LED projector units; only Laramie Longhorn and Limited built after May 2019 with the adaptive LED projector setup reached Good.
Owner and forum commentary consistently flag a wide A-pillar blind spot on the driver's side and a large passenger-mirror blind zone; optional blind-spot monitoring with trailer-length-aware coverage helps compensate but isn't standard, leaving baseline sightlines average-to-below-average for the segment.
The Crew Cab's rear bench offers workable room for car seats, but IIHS specifically flagged the LATCH lower-anchor ease-of-use as Marginal, citing anchor depth and access issues at some seating positions.
4Space & ComfortOne of the 1500's strongest categories.2.38C+
Volume-trim Big Horn Crew Cab seats five with front bucket seats and console; a front bench raising capacity to six is a low-cost option but not the representative config.
Manufacturer-published front headroom for the 2019 Ram 1500, identical for Quad Cab and Crew Cab.
Manufacturer-published front legroom; slightly below the full-size truck norm despite the cabin's otherwise generous dimensions.
Crew Cab second-row headroom from manufacturer specs.
Crew Cab rear legroom is class-leading for 2019, a major selling point of the redesigned fifth-generation truck.
5'7" box is the volume Crew Cab bed length; the 6'4" box is also available.
Cargo volume for the 5'7" bed fitted to the volume Crew Cab configuration.
Large center console bin, available in-floor rear storage under the fold-flat 60/40 rear seat, and an available RamBox lockable bedside storage system are strong for the segment, though RamBox is an extra-cost option rather than standard on the volume trim.
Reviewers consistently praised the redesigned 2019 seats as supportive and comfortable front and rear, a notable improvement over the outgoing truck.
The five-link coil-spring rear suspension (unique among mainstream half-ton rivals' leaf springs in 2019) gave the Ram 1500 segment-leading, 'buttery smooth' ride composure.
Acoustic laminated glass and extensive sound-deadening were called out in period reviews as making the cabin notably quiet for a full-size truck.
Heated/ventilated front seats, a heated steering wheel, and rear seat heaters were available on Laramie and above, but not standard on the volume Big Horn trim.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the 1500's weakest categories.1.16D
The all-new fifth-generation 2019 Ram 1500 Tradesman starts near the low end of full-size truck pricing even with the DT generation's added tech content, keeping the entry point accessible relative to segment peers.
Big Horn is the Ram 1500's highest-volume trim, and a 4x4 Crew Cab as typically equipped lands mid-pack among full-size crew-cab trucks for 2019.
CarEdge's model-specific 5-year combined maintenance-and-repair projection for the 2019 Ram 1500 sits well below the full-size-truck band ceiling, consistent with the simple, long-running 3.6L Pentastar/5.7L Hemi powertrains carried into the new DT generation.
Estimates for Ram 1500 5-year retention vary widely by source and model year (roughly 45-67%); the all-new, strong-selling DT generation launched in 2019 supports the middle-to-upper end of that range, but no single model-year-specific figure is definitive.
Standard FCA/Ram bumper-to-bumper coverage for the 2019 model year, the segment floor for full-size trucks.
Standard FCA/Ram powertrain coverage for 2019, the segment floor; unchanged from prior model years.
FCA bundled 5-year/60,000-mile 24/7 roadside assistance with every new 2019 Ram purchase, but unlike some rivals' prepaid service plans, Ram offered no standard complimentary scheduled maintenance for 2019 — owners paid for oil changes and service out of pocket unless they purchased an optional Mopar maintenance plan.
$43,895 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (50% retained, or about $21,948) leaves about $21,948 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,975 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $27,923 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.80C-
Sources disagree but converge on average-to-fair: Consumer Reports gave the 2019 Ram 1500 (first year of the all-new 5th-gen DT) an average/3-of-5 predicted reliability score, typical for a ground-up redesign, while J.D. Power's Quality & Reliability rating was 69/100 ('Fair'), with the truck ranking 4th of the large light-duty pickups it tracked that model year.
Ram sits alongside sibling Stellantis brands Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep at or near the bottom of Consumer Reports' multi-year brand dependability rankings (Ram landing around 24th-25th of ~26 brands tracked in recent studies), a consistent bottom-third standing rather than a one-year blip.
NHTSA lists roughly 29-30 recall campaigns touching the 2019 model year, including a driver-airbag non-deployment recall, a side-curtain airbag inflator rupture recall, a multi-year ABS/ESC control-module software recall disabling electronic stability control on over a million trucks, and a diesel crankshaft-sensor stall recall for 2014-2019 trucks — a repeated pattern touching safety-critical systems (airbags, stability control), not a few minor campaigns.
The base 5.7L Hemi V8 carries a long, generally proven high-mileage track record, but 2019 introduced the eTorque mild-hybrid belt-starter-generator system on the Hemi, which was new and unproven at launch; owner reports since have flagged 12V battery drain causing eTorque shutoffs and exhaust manifold bolts prone to breaking on this generation, so the powertrain family is mixed rather than clean.
Reviewers were near-unanimous that the redesigned 5th-gen cabin was class-leading for the price: Car and Driver/5thGenRams called the Limited's interior the nicest in a Detroit-built vehicle short of a Lincoln Navigator, citing real open-pore wood, real metal trim, and soft leather throughout, with Kelley Blue Book calling the materials and fit arguably best in class.
Launch reviews specifically praised assembly quality — panel gaps and trim alignment were reported as tight and consistent ('fit and finish bang on with no panel gaps or pieces out of place'), and Motor Trend noted a noticeable step up in fit and finish versus the outgoing 4th-gen truck.
Ram shares Stellantis's large nationwide Chrysler-Dodge-Jeep-Ram dealer footprint, giving broad geographic coverage, but J.D. Power's dealer-service studies have repeatedly placed Ram/Stellantis brands behind leaders like Toyota and Ford on service satisfaction, putting the network in adequate-but-mixed territory rather than top-tier.
As a high-volume full-size pickup the 1500 benefits from a huge aftermarket and widely available parts; average annual repair/maintenance cost of about $691 undercuts the F-150 ($788) and Silverado 1500 ($714), though it runs slightly above the Titan ($555).
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the 1500's weakest categories.1.31D
The volume Big Horn trim's standard touchscreen is 8.4 in; the segment-first 12-inch Uconnect 4C NAV is a costly option, not the representative configuration.
Uconnect 4C was widely regarded as one of the best systems in the industry for logical layout and responsiveness even on the 8.4-in screen; the optional 12-in split-screen version was singled out by Car and Driver as outstanding.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto were standard via USB on the 8.4-in and 12-in Uconnect systems, but wireless projection did not arrive on Ram 1500 until the 2021+ Uconnect 5 update — 2019 is wired-only.
Uconnect's voice command and available native nav (bundled with the 8.4-in NAV and standard with the 12-in screen) were competent, though most owners defaulted to phone-projected navigation.
Base audio was adequate; an optional Alpine premium audio system stepped up sound quality but there was no flagship high-end branded system on Ram in 2019.
A 7-inch configurable color driver display sat between analog gauges on Big Horn and up; a larger, more fully digital cluster was reserved for Laramie Longhorn/Limited, so the volume trim gets partial digital only.
2019 Uconnect supported map/software updates via USB or a dealer visit and limited over-the-air map data through an embedded modem, but there was no whole-vehicle feature-adding OTA capability in this era.
The Uconnect Access app offered remote start, lock/unlock, and vehicle locate on a subscription after a trial period — functional but not best-in-class.
USB-A ports front and rear plus household-style 115V outlets were available, but USB-C and wireless charging were not yet standard fare on the volume trim in 2019.
Proximity keyless entry, push-button start, and remote start were available on Big Horn and up, standard convenience for the segment but not on the base Tradesman.
A 360-degree Surround View camera system was new for the redesigned 2019 Ram 1500, a first for the nameplate, alongside a standard-on-upper-trims rear camera and available parking sensors.
No head-up display was offered on any 2019 Ram 1500 trim; the feature did not arrive on the nameplate until later model years.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.03C
Crew Cab's wide rear doors and class-leading 45.2-in rear legroom make loading car seats easy, with LATCH anchors on the outboard rear positions, but the truck's high step-in height and lack of a low cargo floor are compromises next to a family SUV.
Forward collision warning, blind-spot monitoring and adaptive cruise were available but bundled into option packages rather than standard on the family-accessible Big Horn trim; IIHS rated the redesigned Crew Cab well in most crash tests.
Strong rear legroom, a quiet, well-isolated cabin and a comfortable ride suit multi-hour family trips, though rear entertainment and climate amenities are thinner than in a minivan or three-row SUV.
The smooth coil-spring ride and composed low-speed manners make the Ram pleasant to drive, but its full-size footprint is tiring to place in tight daily traffic and parking lots.
The volume 5.7L HEMI V8 eTorque returns an EPA-estimated 17 city/23 highway mpg, well below typical commuter vehicle running costs.
A roughly 46-49 ft curb-to-curb turning diameter and full-size dimensions make the Crew Cab cumbersome in urban settings, somewhat offset by the available 360-degree camera.
Up to 12,750 lbs max towing (eTorque HEMI with Max Tow package) and payload up to roughly 2,300 lbs give the 2019 Ram 1500 serious half-ton work capability, among the best in its class for the model year.
The redesigned fifth-generation platform was new for 2019 with no multi-year durability track record yet, and Ram's historical reliability reputation trails Ford and GM half-tons among fleet buyers.
A new multifunction tailgate (debuting on the 2019 redesign), in-bed LED lighting, available RamBox lockable bins and bed tie-downs give solid jobsite practicality, though a true onboard power/generator option was not offered.
A quiet, well-controlled ride and a large fuel tank (26 gallons) give good highway range and comfort for road trips, aided by available adaptive cruise control.
4x4 is available on the volume trim with reasonable ground clearance, and the dedicated off-road Rebel trim exists in the lineup, though the Big Horn volume configuration itself is more street/work-oriented than trail-focused.
A 53.9 cu ft bed, available RamBox storage, bed tie-downs and factory tow hitch give strong flexibility for hauling bulky outdoor gear, toys, or trailers.

Reviewers singled out the Ram's five-link coil-spring rear suspension and rear stabilizer bar for composed, balanced cornering 'in a class of its own' versus leaf-sprung full-size rivals in 2019.
Steering is accurate and well-weighted enough for confident highway driving but, typical of the segment, offers little genuine road feedback.
Braking performance was reported as adequate and consistent for the segment without being a standout, typical of half-ton trucks of this era.
The 5.7L HEMI V8 with the new-for-2019 eTorque mild-hybrid system smoothed stop-start engagement and added low-end torque assist, giving a notably refined powertrain feel versus the prior generation.
The HEMI V8's exhaust note is pleasant rather than intrusive under load, and acoustic glass plus added sound-deadening keep drivetrain noise well isolated from the cabin.
Turning diameter for the volume Big Horn Crew Cab 5'7" box configuration; larger cabs/beds and 4x4 add several feet.
A commanding seating position, wide adjustability range, and logically placed controls were praised in the redesigned 2019 cabin, though the large console and high step-in require some acclimation.
The HEMI V8's torque and sound plus the segment-best ride give the Ram more personality and enjoyment than most work trucks, though it remains an appliance-leaning full-size pickup rather than an enthusiast vehicle.
10Value & Market PositionThe 1500's best-graded category.3.60A-
Base Tradesman trim is deliberately work-spec (halogen headlamps, vinyl/cloth seats, Uconnect 3 5.0 radio) which is competitive but not generous versus segment norms; the standout content — the available 12-inch Uconnect touchscreen, largest in class for 2019 — is reserved for higher trims rather than standard.
Motor Trend's 2019 Truck of the Year judging singled out the all-new Ram 1500 for balancing capability, efficiency, value, and quality better than any rival in the segment, including the redesigned Silverado/Sierra and the F-150 — a strong bang-for-buck verdict for a from-the-ground-up redesign.
Seven distinct 2019 trims (Tradesman, HFE, Big Horn, Rebel, Laramie, Longhorn, Limited) span work-truck basics through off-road (Rebel) to luxury (air-suspension Limited), across multiple cab, bed and drivetrain combinations — a wide, well-spaced range, even though it's down from the prior generation's eleven trims.
FCA sold 633,694 Ram pickups in the US in 2019, up 18% year-over-year, surpassing the Chevrolet Silverado in annual sales for the first time ever and capturing roughly 17.8% of the full-size truck market in the model's first full year on the all-new DT platform — a clear fast-riser result, just short of the long-dominant F-Series.
Ram built real momentum and loyalty through the 2010s with distinctive styling and ride comfort, but the brand still trails Ford and Chevrolet's longer truck heritage in overall image strength; the 2019 redesign and Motor Trend win gave it a genuine, if not yet top-tier, desirability boost.
FCA ran aggressive 2019 Ram 1500 incentive programs — reports of combined manufacturer incentives in the 11-15% range plus dealer discounts, with some buyers reporting 20-25%+ off MSRP on higher trims — giving buyers real negotiating room without signaling desperation given the model's strong sales momentum.
2019 is the launch year of the all-new fifth-generation (DT) Ram 1500, debuting at the January 2018 Detroit auto show with a new platform, new eTorque mild-hybrid option, and the new 12-inch Uconnect system — as fresh as a model year gets.
The 2019 Ram 1500 won Motor Trend's 2019 Truck of the Year over an all-new Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, and F-150 PowerStroke Diesel, and was widely praised in contemporary press for refining the formula while retaining Ram's ride/comfort strengths — a top-tier critical result.
