The verdict

A mixed-report compact hatchback, strong on efficiency and held back by performance.

The 2024 Prius is the second year of the redesign that finally made Toyota's hybrid good-looking and quick enough. It returns 52 MPG combined on the volume XLE (57 on the LE) using regular gas, earned a 5-star NHTSA rating and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, and keeps Toyota's reputation for running forever. The trade-offs come from that low, swoopy body: the rear seat is cramped, it's hard to see out of, the cabin gets loud on the highway, and the volume trim's 8-inch screen feels basic. If you mostly carry one or two people and want to spend as little as possible on fuel, it's hard to beat.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainThe Prius's lowest-graded category.0.64F
Horsepower
194 hp combined (FWD volume XLE); 196 hp with Electronic On-Demand AWD; 220 hp Prius Prime
16/100
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

2024 is the second model year of the fifth-generation (XW60) Prius and a carry-over: the 2.0L M20A-FXS hybrid makes 194 net hp in front-drive form and 196 hp with the E-Four rear motor. Nearly double the prior generation, but low in a 130–520 hp hatchback band set by hot hatches.

Torque
139 lb-ft @ 4,400 rpm (engine peak; no combined system torque published)
6/100
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Toyota rates the Atkinson-cycle 2.0L at 139 lb-ft and publishes no combined system torque, so the engine peak is the authoritative figure. Electric assist makes it feel stronger off the line, but the published value sits near the bottom of the hatchback band.

0–60 mph time
7.2 s (Toyota, FWD); 7.0 s AWD; 6.6 s Prius Prime
35/100
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Toyota quotes 7.2 seconds for the FWD volume trim and 7.0 with AWD — more than three seconds quicker than the fourth-generation car and brisk for an economy hybrid, though mid-pack against a band whose quick end is hot hatches.

Powertrain refinement64
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

In town the fifth-gen hybrid system is smooth — silent EV creep, seamless engine start/stop and immediate motor response with no turbo lag. Under hard load for freeway merges or highway grades the 2.0L becomes loud and coarse, which keeps it out of the top band.

Transmission behavior66
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The planetary eCVT never hunts or shift-shocks, giving perfectly clean behavior in normal driving. It loses points for rubber-band rev flare and drone under full throttle, with no simulated steps.

AWD/4WD availability66
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Electronic On-Demand AWD is optional on all three 2024 grades (LE, XLE, Limited) via a driveshaft-less rear motor. It is a traction aid rather than a capability system — small, speed-limited rear motor, no low range or terrain suite, and the later Snow Extra mode had not yet arrived.

Powertrain lineup breadth55
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

No gas-only or full-EV Prius, but the nameplate offers two distinct electrified drivetrains: the 194/196-hp hybrid in FWD or AWD, and the 220-hp Prius Prime plug-in with a 13.6-kWh pack and up to 44 miles of EV range. A real choice, but narrower than rivals spanning gas, hybrid and EV.

2Efficiency & RangeThe Prius's best-graded category.4.00A+
Combined fuel economy
52 MPG combined (XLE/Limited FWD); 49–57 across the 2024 hybrid lineup
100/100
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The volume XLE FWD is EPA-rated 52 mpg combined; the base LE FWD reaches 57 and even the thirstiest configuration (AWD XLE/Limited) manages 49.

City fuel economy
52 MPG city (XLE/Limited FWD); 57 on LE FWD
100/100
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Stop-and-go driving is where the hybrid system shines; 52 mpg city on the volume XLE and 57 on the LE FWD.

Highway fuel economy
52 MPG highway (XLE/Limited FWD); 50–56 across the lineup
100/100
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The low-drag body holds the city figure on the highway — 52 mpg on the XLE FWD and 56 on the LE FWD — so the advantage carries onto road trips.

Driving range
~588 mi (XLE/Limited FWD); ~515–644 mi across the lineup
82/100
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

An 11.3-gallon FWD tank at 52 mpg gives about 588 miles; the LE FWD stretches to ~644 miles, while AWD models' 10.5-gallon tank drops the XLE/Limited AWD to ~515.

Estimated annual fuel cost
$1,300/yr (XLE/Limited FWD); $1,200 LE FWD, $1,250–1,350 AWD
86/100
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

EPA estimates $1,300 a year to fuel the volume XLE FWD on regular gas at 15,000 miles — among the cheapest gasoline vehicles to run, with $5,500 saved over five years versus the average new car.

Fuel requirements92
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Every 2024 Prius configuration runs on 87-octane regular with no premium recommendation, and as a conventional hybrid it needs no charging infrastructure at all.

3SafetyOne of the Prius's strongest categories.3.27B+
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (5-star frontal and side, 4-star rollover)
100/100
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

NHTSA rates the 2024 Prius 5 stars overall, with 5-star frontal and side crash results and a 4-star rollover rating.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness85
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2024 Prius is a 2024 IIHS Top Safety Pick+, with Good small overlap, original moderate overlap and updated side results; the one blemish is an Acceptable in the updated moderate overlap test (rear-passenger protection), which keeps it off the very top of the band.

Standard ADAS suite breadth88
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard on all three 2024 trims (LE, XLE, Limited) — pre-collision with pedestrian/cyclist detection, full-speed-range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, Lane Departure Alert with steering assist, Lane Tracing Assist, Road Sign Assist, automatic high beams and Proactive Driving Assist — and Blind Spot Monitor with Rear Cross-Traffic Alert is standard even on the LE.

Automatic emergency braking performance84
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

IIHS rates the standard TSS 3.0 pedestrian front crash prevention Good, with full avoidance of the crossing child and crossing adult targets at 12 and 25 mph, satisfying the night-inclusive pedestrian requirement of the 2024 TSP+ criteria.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage70
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross-Traffic Alert are standard on every 2024 trim, better than the segment norm, but the system is alert-only with no steering/braking intervention or safe-exit alert; Panoramic View Monitor and parking-support braking are reserved for upper trims.

Lane keeping & centering73
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Lane Departure Alert with steering assist and Lane Tracing Assist are standard and hold the lane competently on highways, though reviewers of the fifth-gen car note it can pick an odd line in curves and fight manual inputs somewhat.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist77
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control with stop-and-go is standard on every trim and pairs with Lane Tracing Assist for a competent combined highway assist; smooth in traffic, but the lane-centering half has rough edges.

Hands-free driving availability5
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

No hands-free driving is offered on any 2024 Prius trim; Lane Tracing Assist requires hands on the wheel and Toyota's Teammate Advanced Drive is not available on the Prius.

Headlight performance62
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

IIHS rates the LED projector headlights Acceptable on all 2024 trims; high-beam assist is standard and there is no Marginal variant, but no trim reaches Good and the lamps are not curve-adaptive.

Outward visibility55
#10 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The fifth-gen Prius's low roof, steeply raked windshield, thick A- and C-pillars and shallow rear window compromise sightlines; the digital rear-view mirror and Panoramic View Monitor that compensate are Limited-trim features, so the volume LE/XLE get only the backup camera.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability66
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

IIHS gives the LATCH hardware its top Good+ rating — two full outboard sets plus a center tether that can borrow lower anchors — but the sloping roof's limited rear headroom and modest legroom make bulky rear-facing seats tight and three-across unrealistic.

4Space & ComfortOne of the Prius's weakest categories.1.95C-
Seating capacity

The 2024 Prius is a five-passenger liftback on every grade (LE, XLE, Limited), FWD or AWD.

Front headroom
38.0 in
50/100
#11 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

38.0 in of front headroom is mid-pack for a compact hatchback; the fastback roofline costs less up front than in the rear seat.

Front legroom
43.2 in
80/100
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

43.2 in of front legroom is generous for the class — one of the fifth-generation Prius's genuine packaging strengths.

36.4 in of rear headroom sits near the bottom of the hatchback band, and the sloping roof pushes taller heads toward the glass in practice.

Rear legroom
34.8 in
28/100
#10 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

34.8 in of rear legroom trails compact-hatch rivals such as the Civic Hatchback (~37.4 in), and the low cushion gives little under-thigh support.

Cargo/trunk volume
20.3 cu ft (XLE/Limited); 23.8 cu ft on LE
62/100
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Scored on the volume XLE at 20.3 cu ft behind the rear seat. The LE's different underfloor packaging gives it 23.8 cu ft.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions58
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Practical everyday kit — wide liftback opening, 60/40 fold, underfloor well, Qi pad from XLE, power liftback on Limited — but console and door bins are modest and the low roof limits real load height versus the previous Prius.

Seat comfort60
#10 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Front seats are a clear step up from the previous Prius and the XLE adds an 8-way power driver's seat, but the low, flat rear bench drags the front/rear average to mid-band.

Ride quality55
#12 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The sportier fifth-generation tuning on 19-in wheels (XLE/Limited) trades compliance for body control — firm rather than harsh, busy over broken pavement.

Cabin quietness45
#12 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Highway wind noise is above class norms and the engine drones through the eCVT under hard acceleration — below average for a car whose mission favors calm.

Climate & comfort features60
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Heated front seats arrive at the XLE and ventilated front seats are Limited-only; the LE has single-zone climate and no seat heat. No rear vents, and remote pre-conditioning depends on the Remote Connect subscription.

5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.51C+
Base MSRP
$29,045 (LE FWD $27,950 + $1,095 destination) — LE AWD-e $30,445
79/100
#12 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

2024 is the second model year of the fifth-generation (XW60) Prius, which launched for 2023; the LE rose a few hundred dollars over its launch price but still delivers near $29k, roughly $4,000 above a conventional compact hatchback — the premium for the 196-hp hybrid system and 57-mpg rating.

Volume-Trim Price
~$32,900 (XLE FWD as typically equipped); XLE $32,490 · Limited $36,060, incl. destination
74/100
#12 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The XLE is the volume grade — it adds 19-inch wheels, heated power driver's seat, SofTex, smart key, wireless charging and front/rear parking assist with braking — and the ~$400 over sticker covers typical paint and port accessories.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$4,000 over 5 years (source range $1,437–$5,622 depending on methodology)
77/100
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The eCVT hybrid has no starter, alternator, belts or conventional transmission wear items, and regenerative braking extends pad life, so routine costs are oil, filters, tires and cabin air; the blended figure sits between CarEdge's low projection and KBB's dealer-rate estimate.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~57% of MSRP retained at 5 years (KBB forward residual ~53%, CarEdge/iSeeCars used-market 64–68%)
73/100
#9 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Strong Toyota-hybrid resale, with the fifth-gen redesign's demand and tight early supply propping up used values; 57% reconciles KBB's conservative sticker-based residual with used-market studies measured against transaction prices, consistent with the 2026 Prius scorecard (58%).

Basic warranty
3 yr / 36,000 mi bumper-to-bumper
0/100
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Toyota's 36-month/36,000-mile basic coverage is the industry floor — level with Honda and Mazda but two years behind Hyundai and Kia.

Powertrain warranty
5 yr / 60,000 mi powertrain; hybrid components 8 yr / 100,000 mi; hybrid battery 10 yr / 150,000 mi
0/100
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The nominal powertrain term is Toyota's standard 5 yr/60,000 mi, at the bottom of the band, though the hybrid-specific components and traction battery carry far longer coverage that addresses the main ownership worry on a hybrid.

Complimentary maintenance & perks75
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

ToyotaCare's 2 yr/25,000 mi of scheduled maintenance plus 2 years of unlimited-mile roadside assistance is a genuine multi-year plan, and connected-service trials (Safety/Service Connect, 1-year Remote Connect) add modest value; nothing beyond that pushes it into the top band.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$18,147 (≈$14,147 depreciation + $4,000 maintenance)
79/100
#10 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

$32,900 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (57% retained, or about $18,753) leaves about $14,147 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,000 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $18,147 in total.

6Reliability & QualityOne of the Prius's strongest categories.3.42B+
Predicted reliability82
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Second model year of the fifth-generation (XW60) Prius, a carry-over from the 2023 launch. Consumer Reports rates the 2024 Prius more reliable than the average 2024 car; J.D. Power's Quality & Reliability score of 75/100 is only average, so the two sources agree on 'solid' rather than 'class-best'.

Brand reliability track record88
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Toyota is a perennial top-tier brand in Consumer Reports' brand reliability rankings (top two alongside Lexus in recent years) and finishes above the industry average in J.D. Power VDS.

Recall & TSB history62
#11 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Four NHTSA campaigns cover the 2024 Prius, led by a safety recall for rear doors that can open unexpectedly when water shorts the door switch — the first remedy (24V274) proved insufficient and was expanded/replaced by 26V049. The others are a rear-camera software fault and a mislabeled load-capacity sticker; nothing powertrain or fire related.

Powertrain durability reputation90
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 2.0L M20A-FXS four-cylinder with the fifth-generation Toyota Hybrid System e-CVT is an evolution of Toyota's hybrid architecture, which has a long, well-documented high-mileage record across Prius, Corolla, RAV4 and Camry hybrids. No powertrain recalls or systemic failures for this generation.

Interior material quality62
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The redesigned cabin is far more conventional and modern than the prior generation, but reviewers routinely note abundant hard plastics on the door panels and lower dash on the volume LE/XLE trims; acceptable for a mainstream compact.

Fit & finish76
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Assembly is generally tight with few rattle complaints, but J.D. Power's average quality score and the rear door switch water-intrusion defect keep it out of the top band.

Dealer & service network90
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Toyota operates one of the densest US dealer networks (~1,200+ dealers) with strong hybrid service familiarity; ToyotaCare covers 2 years/25,000 miles of scheduled maintenance.

Parts availability & repair cost82
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Toyota parts are abundant and inexpensive, and hybrid components are shared across a huge fleet; hybrid battery and inverter work is dealer-centric but covered by Toyota's 10-year/150,000-mile hybrid battery warranty.

7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.26C
Touchscreen size
8.0 in standard (LE, XLE); 12.3 in optional on XLE, standard on Limited
12/100
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The volume XLE comes with the 8.0-inch Toyota Audio Multimedia screen; the 12.3-inch unit is an XLE option and standard only on the Limited.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness74
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Toyota Audio Multimedia is quick and logically laid out, and the Prius keeps physical climate controls and a volume knob. The 8-inch panel looks small in its bezel and some audio settings are buried several taps deep.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto90
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on every 2024 grade, including the base LE.

Voice control & native navigation60
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

"Hey, Toyota" Intelligent Assistant and Cloud Navigation are capable, but they sit behind the Drive Connect subscription; the trial comes with the 12.3-in screen/Limited, not the 8-inch volume XLE.

Audio system quality55
#11 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The LE and XLE use a basic six-speaker system; the 8-speaker JBL upgrade is Limited-only.

Digital instrument cluster72
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Every grade gets the top-mount fully digital 7-inch cluster with configurable readouts, standard even on the LE. Its small size and high mount, which the wheel rim can block, hold it back.

OTA update capability58
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Over-the-air updates cover the Toyota Audio Multimedia head unit and cloud map data only — there is no whole-vehicle or ADAS OTA.

Companion app & remote functions70
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The Toyota app handles remote lock/unlock, remote start and vehicle locate, and Digital Key is optional on XLE and standard on Limited. Remote Connect is subscription-based after the trial, and Digital Key depends on it.

Charging ports & device power80
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Six USB-C ports are standard across the cabin on every grade, which is generous for the class, and Qi wireless charging is standard from the XLE. There is no AC outlet on the hybrid.

Keyless & remote access78
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Push-button start and Smart Key are standard. The XLE extends proximity entry to the front doors and liftback and can add phone-as-key Digital Key, while remote start requires the app subscription.

Camera & parking aids64
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

A backup camera is standard and the XLE gets Front and Rear Parking Assist with Automatic Braking. The 360-degree Panoramic View Monitor is only available on the Limited.

Head-up display availability10
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

No head-up display is offered on any 2024 Prius grade. The fifth generation dropped the previous Prius's available color HUD in favor of the top-mount cluster.

8Use-Case FitOne of the Prius's weakest categories.1.97C-
Kid & car-seat practicality58
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The LATCH hardware is good and the hatch takes a stroller easily, but the raked roof and low seat make leaning a child in awkward, and 34.8 in of rear legroom leaves little room behind a rear-facing seat.

Family safety package84
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

It has a top-tier crash record, and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 plus blind-spot monitoring are standard down to the LE.

Family road-trip comfort53
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

There is room for four people's luggage and there are rear USB-C ports, but the tight, low rear seat, missing rear vents and wind and powertrain noise wear on long family days.

Daily driving ease72
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Silent electric creep, light controls and 194 hp make city driving and merging easy. The firm ride and poor rear view, made worse by the missing rear wiper, hold it back.

Commuting cost efficiency93
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Its core strength: 52 MPG combined on the volume trim (57 on LE) on regular fuel, about $1,300 a year, plus low routine maintenance costs.

Parking & maneuverability63
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

A 34.4-ft turning circle helps in tight spots, but the car is long for a compact hatch at 181 in and rear visibility is poor. Sensors arrive at the XLE, while the 360-degree camera is Limited-only.

Work capability24
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Not a work vehicle: Toyota publishes no US tow rating and advises against fitting a hitch. Its only work asset is a 20.3 cu ft hatch with folding seats.

Durability for work duty57
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The hybrid powertrain is proven over very high mileage in taxi and rideshare fleets, but the low-slung passenger body has no hard-wearing or work-oriented spec.

Jobsite & upfit practicality27
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Upfit options are limited to the hatch, folding seats, USB-C ports and dealer roof racks. There is no 120V AC outlet, and with no hitch there is no receiver-mounted upfit path.

Long-distance comfort & range72
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Range of nearly 590 miles, good front seats and standard full-speed adaptive cruise with lane centering make highway days easy. Wind noise and eCVT drone keep it out of the top band.

Outdoor & adventure capability42
#3 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Electronic On-Demand AWD is available on every grade and helps in snow, but low ground clearance, no hitch, no factory roof rails and no AC power keep it a pavement car.

Gear & luggage flexibility66
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

A liftback, 20.3 cu ft behind the rear seat (23.8 on LE) and a 60/40 fold handle bulky luggage well. The raked hatch limits tall loads, and space is down versus the previous Prius.

9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.69C+
Handling & agility70
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The low center of gravity of the fifth-gen TNGA-C platform gives composed cornering with little roll and quick turn-in, and 0.90 g of grip is strong for an economy hybrid. Tuning favors security over engagement.

Steering feel64
#8 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The steering is accurate and quick enough to place the car precisely, but it is very light and short on feedback — precise rather than communicative.

Braking confidence74
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Four-wheel discs stop the car from 70 mph in 171 ft, and the regen-to-friction blend is smooth. Some testers find the pedal touchy at the top of its travel.

Powertrain smoothness & response75
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The 194-hp fifth-gen hybrid system is nearly seamless day to day, with silent EV creep, imperceptible engine starts and instant motor torque. Revs flare and hold under full throttle.

Drivetrain noise & vibration56
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

It is near-silent in EV mode and calm at a steady cruise, but the 2.0L four turns loud and raspy on merges and grades as the eCVT holds a droning rev plateau.

Turning circle
34.4 ft curb-to-curb (17-in wheels); slightly wider on the 19-in wheels of XLE/Limited
93/100
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

A 34.4-ft turning circle is at the tight end of the compact-hatch band. The 19-in wheels on XLE/Limited add a little; the Prius Prime is quoted at 35.4 ft on 19s.

Driving position & ergonomics50
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The top-mount cluster can be hidden by the wheel rim, the low roof makes getting in awkward and tight for six-footers, and the shallow rear window has no wiper. The low dash does give a clear forward view.

Fun-to-drive factor60
#7 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The fifth-gen Prius looks sharp, reaches 60 mph in about 7 seconds and corners with composure — enough to win major awards on launch. Without engine sound, shifts or reward for pushing, it is pleasant rather than an enthusiast car.

10Value & Market PositionGrades above the middle of the scale.3.09B
Standard equipment generosity66
#12 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The LE includes Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, an 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, six USB-C ports and an electronic parking brake — competitive essentials — but heated seats, a power seat, smart key and the 12.3-inch screen are held back for XLE and Limited, where Hyundai's Elantra Hybrid gives more at a lower price.

Feature value per dollar74
#4 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

196 hp and a class-best 57 mpg combined for about $29k delivered is strong content per dollar, with AWD-e a modest $1,400 on any grade; the price premium over an Elantra Hybrid and the compromised rear headroom and cargo opening keep it short of a bargain.

Trim & configuration breadth72
#5 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Three hybrid grades (LE, XLE, Limited), each with FWD or AWD-e, plus the separately-badged Prius Prime plug-in (SE/XSE/XSE Premium) give a reasonable ladder from about $29k to $36k; the Nightshade appearance edition did not arrive until 2025, so the 2024 range is a little thinner.

Sales popularity & market acceptance70
#6 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

With the redesign in full supply, US deliveries rose about 25% to 44,711 in calendar 2024 from 35,816 in 2023 — a clear rebound after a decade of decline, though still well below compact-class volume leaders.

Brand desirability & image84
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Toyota's reliability and resale reputation is among the strongest in the market, and the fifth-gen's styling widely reset the Prius from punchline to desirable design, which in 2024 showed up as waitlists and strong used values.

Deals & incentive availability50
#13 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

Early in the model year the redesigned Prius was supply-constrained and often sold at or above sticker; by later 2024 modest offers appeared — 3.99–4.99% APR in some regions, $500 cash and the $500 college/military rebates — but nothing like the $4,500 cash on the Prius Prime.

Model freshness88
#2 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

2024 is only the second model year of the XW60 generation launched for 2023 on the TNGA-C platform with the fifth-generation hybrid system — a new design with no near-term replacement risk.

Critical reception & awards90
#1 of 13 Compact CarsCompare all →

The redesigned Prius swept the major awards in its first full cycle — 2024 North American Car of the Year, MotorTrend Car of the Year, Car and Driver 10Best and KBB/Edmunds honors — making it one of the most decorated cars of the period.
