The verdict
A mixed-report mid-size luxury sedan, strong on performance and held back by ownership.
The 2019 S90 T8 is a quick, plush, beautifully trimmed plug-in luxury sedan with limo-like rear legroom (40.4 in), 400 hp, and an IIHS Top Safety Pick. The weak points are its 21-mile electric range, a small 13.5 cu ft trunk, a laggy early touchscreen, and Volvo's poor reliability record for this era. It also lost value fast: a $69,995 T8 Inscription now trades in for about 30% of its sticker. That is painful for the first owner but makes a used one a lot of car for the money, as long as you budget for out-of-warranty hybrid repairs.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Stretch-out rear seat
- Benchmark seats and a soft ride
- Strong plug-in hybrid punch
What holds it back
- Steep price and brutal depreciation
- Tiny electric range, thirsty on gas
- Shaky reliability record

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe S90's best-graded category.2.95B-
The scored 2019 T8 plug-in pairs the turbocharged and supercharged 2.0L four with a rear-axle electric motor for 400 hp total, which is strong for a mid-size luxury sedan. 2019 is a carry-over year within the 2017-launched generation, before the 2021 facelift.
The T8's 472 lb-ft of combined system torque tops the sedan band, and the electric motor supplies it from low rpm.
Volvo's 4.8 s estimate is quick for a heavy plug-in executive sedan, and an instrumented test of the identical 2018 T8 ran 4.5 s. The manufacturer figure is the one scored.
Pulling away on electric power is silent, and the rear e-motor masks turbo/supercharger lag. However, the twincharged four sounds coarse and buzzy when worked hard, and reviewers note occasional lurches as the engine cuts in. That puts it behind six-cylinder rivals.
The Aisin 8-speed automatic shifts smoothly in relaxed driving but is slow to kick down, and its manual mode is unresponsive. It is not as crisp as the ZF 8-speeds in German rivals.
AWD is available on the T5 and standard on the T6 and T8 (electric rear-axle eAWD on the T8), but the base 2019 T5 also came in FWD. There is no torque vectoring or terrain management beyond drive modes.
There are three powertrains: the 250 hp T5 turbo (FWD or AWD), the 316 hp T6 twincharged AWD, and the 400 hp T8 plug-in hybrid. That covers mainstream, performance and electrified needs, though there is no EV and no six-cylinder.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the S90's weakest categories.0.81F
Under the PHEV convention this is the charge-sustaining figure for the 2019 T8 AWD: 29 MPG once the battery is depleted. That is modest, because the twincharged 2.0L is moving a heavy AWD sedan.
26 MPG city in hybrid mode beats the gas-only T6 (21 MPG), because regeneration and electric assist help in stop-start driving.
33 MPG highway in charge-sustaining mode is slightly better than the T6's 31 MPG, but still unremarkable for a plug-in sedan.
EPA's 490-mile total range comfortably covers touring needs. It is limited by the 15.9-gallon tank, and the small battery adds little.
21 EPA electric miles covers only short commutes and sits at the bottom of the plug-in sedan band.
EPA's blended electricity-plus-gasoline cost is $2,000/yr. With only 21 electric miles, most driving still burns premium fuel, so it saves against the gas T6 ($3,300) but less than longer-range plug-ins do.
This is mixed. The twincharged engine requires premium fuel, which makes every gas mile costly. The battery is easy to keep charged, though: about 3 hours on 240V, and overnight on 120V works. There is no DC fast charging, which is normal for a PHEV. Because the short electric range means most miles are gas miles, the premium requirement dominates.
3SafetyMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.06C
NHTSA never crash-tested the 2019 S90 and has no SafetyRatings entry for that year. No year of this generation has an NHTSA star rating to carry over, so the value is 0 (never rated). That reflects the car's low US sales volume, not a poor crash result.
The 2019 S90 earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick, though not TSP+, and the award applies only with the Acceptable headlights. It rated Good in all six crashworthiness tests. Two sub-measures fell short: Acceptable for driver torso in the side test and Acceptable for passenger restraints in the small-overlap passenger test.
As on every SPA-platform Volvo, the IntelliSafe suite is standard on every 2019 S90 trim, the T8 plug-in hybrid included. It covers City Safety AEB with pedestrian, cyclist and large-animal detection, Pilot Assist adaptive cruise with steering assist, Lane Keeping Aid, Run-off Road Mitigation and Road Sign Information. Scored slightly below the 2021 car because BLIS with cross-traffic alert was not yet standard on base Momentum cars in 2019, and the 360° camera was optional.
In IIHS vehicle-to-vehicle testing the standard City Safety system rated Superior, avoiding collisions at both 12 and 25 mph. City Safety detects pedestrians and cyclists, but IIHS's pedestrian AEB rating for the S90 applies only to 2020–21 models and none exists for 2019, so that part of the item is unmeasured.
IIHS lists blind spot detection as standard on the 2019 car, and BLIS with steer assist plus cross-traffic alert gives active intervention. Rear auto-braking is not listed as standard for 2019, unlike 2021, and there is no safe-exit warning, so it scores a bit below the later years.
Lane Keeping Aid and lane-departure warning are standard. The Pilot Assist centering on this generation draws consistent reviewer complaints about wandering and confusion at breaks in lane lines, so it is functional but not trusted.
Pilot Assist adaptive cruise is standard on every trim and covers the full speed range with stop-and-go; following and resuming are smooth. The combined highway assist loses points because its steering half is unreliable (see 3.2.4) and the speed increments are awkward.
The car has no hands-free capability. Pilot Assist needs hands on the wheel and disengages without steering input, and no 2019 Volvo offered hands-free driving in the US.
Only the base Momentum's LED reflector lamps, without curve adaptation, rate Acceptable. The curve-adaptive lamps on Momentum Plus and Inscription rate Marginal, and the T8 plug-in hybrid is sold in those upper trims. Neither variant reaches Good.
Visibility is average for the class. The raked windshield brings thick A-pillars, and the high beltline limits the view over the shoulder. Standard BLIS and the backup camera help, while the 360° camera is a package option.
IIHS rates the LATCH setup Acceptable. The two outboard positions have full LATCH and the center has a tether only. The anchors need little force and are well labeled, and the rear seat has generous room for car seats.
4Space & ComfortOne of the S90's strongest categories.2.78B-
Every 2019 US S90, T8 Twin Engine included, seats five. The center rear position is compromised by the tunnel hump that houses the T8's battery.
37.8 in is mid-pack for a mid-size luxury sedan. The panoramic moonroof is standard, so this is the figure buyers get.
42.2 in is slightly above the segment midpoint, and the power seats have a wide adjustment range.
Rear headroom matches the front. The flat roofline over the long-wheelbase rear cabin avoids the coupe-style taper some rivals have.
Rear legroom is the S90's defining strength. From MY2018 the US car uses the long-wheelbase, China-built body, which gives roughly three inches more rear legroom than the 5 Series, E-Class or A6.
At 13.5 cu ft the trunk is one of the smallest in the class. The T8 loses no trunk space to its battery, which sits in the center tunnel.
Small-item storage is weak. The center console bin is shallow, the touchscreen-centric dash has few cubbies, and there are no underfloor bins or household AC outlet. Wireless charging was not yet standard on 2019 cars (it became standard for 2021), and nothing else stands out as clever.
Volvo's seats are a segment benchmark, supportive and widely adjustable. The volume T8 Inscription adds Nappa leather and ventilation, and massage is available. The long-wheelbase rear bench suits adults except in the center-hump middle seat.
The ride is tuned for comfort and well isolated, and the optional Four-C adaptive suspension with rear air springs makes it plush. On the standard steel springs and the Inscription's larger wheels it is a step firmer and less settled than the class best over sharp impacts.
The cabin is quiet at a cruise, and 21 miles of electric range keep short trips silent. The twincharged four-cylinder is coarse when worked hard and runs often given the small 10.4 kWh pack, which keeps it behind the quietest German and Lexus rivals.
The volume T8 Inscription has heated and ventilated front seats, a panoramic moonroof, four-zone-capable climate and remote preconditioning through Volvo On Call. Heated rear seats and, on US cars, the heated wheel sat in the optional Climate Package until it became standard for 2021, and massage seats are optional.
5Cost of OwnershipThe S90's lowest-graded category.0.00F
The T8 plug-in hybrid is the scored configuration, and for 2019 its entry grade is the T8 Momentum. That is roughly $10,000 above the top of the sedan pricing band, so the item floors. 2019 T8 pricing was about $4,000 higher than after Volvo's 2021 price cut.
The Inscription was the volume T8 grade, and the scored value uses its list price. Unlike later years, 2019 buyers could claim a $5,002 federal plug-in tax credit, which offset part of the price. Even after the credit the car stays above the sedan band.
Volvo's complimentary scheduled maintenance covers the first three years/36,000 miles, which keeps the five-year total below the German rivals. Years four and five carry European-luxury service rates and the extra T8 hybrid hardware. The figure is set slightly above the later-year estimate because early-generation SPA cars logged more repair visits.
The 2019 car is now about seven years old, so observed values set the anchor. KBB's current trade-in of $20,700 on a $69,995 T8 Inscription is about 30%, and the T8 Momentum is about 27%. Working back to five years and matching iSeeCars' plug-in figure gives about 36%. The car is near the bottom of the sedan band.
Volvo's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs one year longer than the 3-year/36,000-mile mainstream norm. That matches the German luxury standard.
The scored value is the 8-year/100,000-mile federal minimum for the plug-in hybrid battery. Volvo offers no separate, longer powertrain warranty in the US, so the T8's gas engine and transmission are covered only for 4 years/50,000 miles.
This is a real advantage over BMW, Mercedes and Audi, which no longer included scheduled maintenance by 2019. The package covers three years/36,000 miles of factory services, plus 4 years of unlimited-mile roadside assistance and Volvo On Call connected services. There was no charging credit or other plug-in perk.
$69,995 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (36% retained, or about $25,198) leaves about $44,797 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,300 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $50,097 in total.
6Reliability & QualityMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.74C-
The signals are mixed. Signals for the S90 itself are average to slightly good: NHTSA has no owner complaints for the 2019 model year, an independent index rates it Good, and 2019 is the third year of a design that ran unchanged until the 2021 facelift. Signals at the brand level are poor for this cohort: Volvo's 2019-MY vehicles scored well above the industry problem rate at 90 days (114 vs 93 PP100) and at three years (256 vs 192 PP100 in the 2022 VDS). Unlike the 2020–2021 cars, the 2019 T8 has no high-voltage battery fire recall.
In every J.D. Power study that covers a 2019 car, Volvo is in the bottom third. It was 29th of 33 in initial quality and second-worst in the three-year dependability study of the 2019 model year. Later editions show only brief improvement before it fell again to near last. Problems cluster in infotainment and electronics rather than mechanical parts.
This is typical recall activity with nothing systemic: four campaigns, all fixed by a dealer, with no do-not-drive or park-outside advisory. The most serious is a low-pressure fuel-pump fuse that can fail and stall the engine. The others are AEB software, possibly missing front-seat rail nuts, and telematics GPS software. Crucially for the scored T8, the 2020–2021 S90 high-voltage battery fire recall (25V179) does not cover the 2019 model year.
The 2019 T8 pairs the turbocharged and supercharged VEA 2.0-litre four with the clutch-based second-generation ERAD electric rear axle. The VEA block has no systemic failure mode. ERAD2 has a lower failure rate than ERAD1 but is the design Volvo replaced with ERAD3 for 2022.5. With no battery recall on this model year, the history is mixed without a fire-risk flag, so it scores mid-band.
The cabin was among the best in the mid-size luxury class in 2019 and was still new. It has open-pore wood, Nappa leather and metal-mesh trim, and the T8 Inscription adds an Orrefors crystal gear selector. Reviewers ranked it at or near the top for materials and design. It falls short of the very top only because the Sensus screen is slow.
Owners report few problems with how the China-built car is put together, and NHTSA has no complaints for 2019. However, the seat-rail nut recall shows lapses on the assembly line, and Volvo's 2019 initial quality score was poor at 114 vs 93 PP100. Those initial-quality problems skew toward electronics rather than panels.
About 280 US retailers gives national coverage, but it is thin next to BMW, Mercedes or Lexus. Volvo's service satisfaction has slipped toward the bottom of the premium brands. 2019 buyers got three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance, and the T8 hardware is shared with the higher-volume XC60 and XC90, so dealers know it. The S90 nameplate was withdrawn from the US after the 2025 model year.
Routine repair costs are normal for a luxury sedan, and independent Volvo parts sources (FCP Euro, IPD, Skandix) are plentiful. The extra cost comes from the T8: the ERAD2 rear drive unit and high-voltage pack are four- to five-figure exposures. By the 2019 car's age, the 8-year battery warranty is close to running out.
7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.75C-
Every 2019 S90 uses the 9-inch portrait Sensus screen, with no larger option. That is small for the mid-size luxury class.
Sensus is a clean, tablet-like layout with swipe-in panels, but climate, seat and drive settings are all buried in the touchscreen with almost no physical controls. Early-SPA Sensus hardware is noticeably laggier than the refreshed system in 2021 cars, and the screen smudges easily.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are both standard on the 2019 S90 but connect over USB only. No trim or option offers wireless projection, which puts it at the bottom of the wired-standard band.
Sensus Navigation (HERE-based) is standard and serviceable, with map updates downloadable over the car's connection. Voice recognition is rigid and command-based, so most owners default to phone projection. Google built-in arrived only for 2022.
The volume T8 Inscription comes standard with Harman Kardon premium audio, and the optional 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system is widely rated among the best factory systems at any price. Momentum trims get a lesser 10-speaker system.
A 12.3-inch fully digital driver display with a map view is standard. It offers only a few fixed themes rather than the freely configurable displays of BMW, Mercedes or Audi.
The 2019 Sensus car has no meaningful vehicle OTA. Software updates are done at the dealer, and only map data downloads over the air. Volvo's OTA program on the S90 starts with the MY2022 Google built-in cars.
Volvo On Call covers the core functions: remote lock/unlock, remote start and cabin preconditioning, car locator, send-to-car and T8 charge status. There is no digital key, and owners commonly report a slow, unreliable app.
There are USB ports up front and three 12V outlets, but wireless phone charging was only optional in 2019 (standard from 2021), port count is modest, and there is no household AC outlet.
Keyless start is standard, remote start comes through Volvo On Call, and full proximity entry with a hands-free power trunk is fitted to the Inscription or offered in packages. No phone-as-key.
A rear camera and front/rear parking sensors are standard on the Inscription. The excellent 360-degree camera and Park Assist Pilot automated parking come in the optional Advanced Package rather than as standard.
A graphical head-up display is available, but only in the optional Advanced Package. It is clear and well placed but conventional in size.
8Use-Case FitOne of the S90's weakest categories.1.40D
With 40.4 in of rear legroom, rear-facing seats fit without pushing the front seat forward. IIHS rates the LATCH hardware Acceptable, the center seat has a tether only, and a 13.5 cu ft trunk takes a stroller reluctantly.
The 2019 car is an IIHS Top Safety Pick, and City Safety AEB, Pilot Assist, lane keeping and BLIS are standard on every trim. Gaps: no NHTSA crash test, Marginal headlights on the curve-adaptive Inscription lamps, rear auto-brake not yet standard, and the 360 camera costs extra.
Four adults ride comfortably for hours thanks to the long-wheelbase rear seat and benchmark front seats. Rear amenities are thinner than on later years: heated rear seats are in the optional Climate Package. Luggage space with four aboard is the main limit, at 13.5 cu ft.
It is relaxed in traffic, with electric pull-away, a supple ride, light steering and standard stop-and-go adaptive cruise. The annoyances are touchscreen-buried controls on a laggy early Sensus system, an engine that starts often given the 21-mile battery, and Pilot Assist centering that wanders.
A commute under 21 miles can run on electricity, but longer trips burn premium fuel at 29 MPG. EPA's blended annual cost is $2,000 versus $2,850 gas-only. Insurance, tires and maintenance cost typical luxury-sedan money, so commuting cost is roughly average for the class.
At 200.1 in long, it is a big car in town, with a 38.7 ft turning circle and thick A-pillars. Light steering and parking sensors help, but the 360 camera is an Advanced Package option on 2019 cars.
This is not a work vehicle. Volvo publishes no US tow rating or factory tow package for the S90, and cargo is limited to a 13.5 cu ft sealed trunk.
It is built for luxury, not hard use. The complex twincharged 2.0L with a rear e-motor and 10.4 kWh pack, optional air springs, large low-profile wheels and Nappa leather are all fragile under abuse, and Volvo's reliability record for this era is weak.
There are almost no work provisions: no AC outlet or vehicle-to-load power, no factory hitch in North America, no upfit ecosystem, and leather and wood surfaces throughout.
A strong highway tourer: benchmark seats, a quiet, supple ride, standard adaptive cruise and 490 miles of total EPA range. Held back by Pilot Assist centering that tires rather than relieves, a coarse engine under load, and premium fuel.
Standard eAWD and good winter comfort make it a credible ski-trip car on plowed roads, but that is all. Low ground clearance, a long wheelbase, no roof rails, no North American hitch, no outlets and no terrain modes, and rear-axle electric traction fades as the small battery depletes.
The 13.5 cu ft trunk is wide and low, and a folding rear seat with a ski pass-through extends it (the optional Lounge-style rear-comfort package deletes the split-fold). No roof rails, no hitch and no underfloor storage.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the S90's strongest categories.2.19C
It is sure-footed, with well-controlled body motions, especially on the optional Four-C air suspension. The heavy long-wheelbase body and comfort tune bring some roll, and it doesn't want to be hustled. Secure but unremarkable.
The steering is light and direct enough for easy parking, but numb, with little feedback or precision against German rivals.
The regen-to-friction blend is smooth and easy to modulate, better than many plug-ins of this era. No instrumented 60–0 figure was found for the 2019 T8, and it carries a lot of mass, so it stays below the top band.
The rear e-motor fills in low-end response and masks turbo/supercharger lag, but reviewers note occasional lurches as the engine cuts in, a rough idle, and an 8-speed that is slow to kick down. The small 10.4 kWh pack means frequent engine running.
Silent in EV mode and quiet at a cruise, but worked hard the stressed twincharged four sounds and feels coarser than the six-cylinders rivals offer at this price.
The long-wheelbase US body turns wide, and there is no rear-axle steering, so it sits near the wide end of the sedan band.
The seats are superb and widely adjustable, and the dash is clean with a low seating position. But climate and many routine functions live in a laggy Sensus touchscreen, and the thick A-pillars intrude.
At 400 hp and 4.8 s to 60 (4.5 s tested), the T8 is quick, but its character is a serene cruiser with numb steering and a buzzy four, so it is pleasant rather than memorable.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.03C
The T8 came well equipped as standard: eAWD, leather, a panoramic moonroof, the 9-inch Sensus portrait touchscreen with CarPlay/Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital cluster, and Pilot Assist with City Safety AEB. Several of those cost extra on a 530e or E-Class. However, Bowers & Wilkins audio, air suspension, a 360° camera and heated rear seats were costly options on a car already near $70,000.
The T8 offers 400 hp, AWD and plug-in capability. The $5,002 federal credit took the edge off its price. Still, the T8 Inscription listed about $9,000 above the post-2021 price, and depreciation was severe: it now trades in at about 30% of its sticker. Fair value at best.
The 2019 lineup had three powertrains: the T5 turbo with FWD or AWD, the T6 twincharged with AWD, and the T8 plug-in hybrid. Momentum and Inscription grades spanned about $49,000–$70,000. It is a reasonable spread, but the 2019 US lineup had no R-Design, no six-cylinder and no performance model against rivals that offer several engines plus M or AMG versions.
US sales of about 2,500 units in 2019 were tiny for a segment where the 5 Series, E-Class and Lexus ES each sell tens of thousands a year. Sales continued to decline in later years, and poor sales were later one of the stated reasons for the US exit. The T8 was only a fraction of that total.
Volvo's image was rising in 2019 on its safety reputation, its Scandinavian design and the success of the SPA-platform XC90/XC60. It was still seen as a respected alternative to the German brands rather than an aspirational badge.
This was a slow-selling luxury sedan in a pre-pandemic, inventory-rich market, so dealer discounts and Volvo lease support were common. The T8 also carried a $5,002 federal tax credit. Buyers had real negotiating leverage without clearance pricing.
2019 was the third model year of a generation launched for 2017 on the then-new SPA platform, before the 2020–2021 facelift. Its platform, interior design and Pilot Assist driver aids were still current. However, the Sensus infotainment was already being criticized as slow.
Reviewers praised the interior, styling, rear-seat room and T8 performance, but rarely chose it over the 5 Series or E-Class. Common criticisms were the less refined ride, a coarse four-cylinder engine and the unintuitive touchscreen. Its notable award was the 2019 IIHS Top Safety Pick.
