The verdict
A mixed-report mid-size luxury sedan, strong on performance and held back by ownership.
The 2020 Volvo S90 T8 is a comfortable, quick and well-built luxury sedan. It has limo-like rear legroom (40.4 in), some of the best seats in the class, 400 hp, and a long list of standard safety tech. The plug-in side disappoints: the car manages only 21 miles of electric range and 30 MPG on premium gas once the battery runs out. A $64,195 sticker that now trades in for under 40% makes it a far better used buy than it was new. Shoppers who value comfort and calm over sportiness and resale will like it. Anyone counting on electric commuting, a big trunk or top-tier reliability should look elsewhere.
Jump to scoresStrengths
- Limo-like rear seat and benchmark seats
- Quick, torquey plug-in powertrain
- Generous standard safety tech
What holds it back
- A plug-in that barely plugs in
- Pricey new, and depreciation is steep
- Reliability and recall concerns

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe S90's best-graded category.2.90B-
The scored 2020 T8 plug-in combines the turbocharged and supercharged 2.0L four with a rear-axle electric motor for 400 hp total, which is strong for a mid-size luxury sedan. 2020 is a carry-over powertrain year in the 2017-launched generation; the first facelift was revealed in February 2020 and arrived for 2021.
The T8's 472 lb-ft of combined system torque tops the sedan band, and the electric motor fills in response at low rpm.
Volvo's 4.8-second figure is quick for a heavy plug-in executive sedan. Instrumented tests of the same T8 drivetrain have run in the mid-4s, but the manufacturer figure is the one scored.
Pulling away on electric power is silent, and the e-motor masks turbo/supercharger lag. However, the twincharged four sounds coarse and buzzy when worked hard, and the engine sometimes cuts in with a lurch. That leaves it behind six-cylinder rivals.
The Aisin 8-speed automatic shifts smoothly in relaxed driving but is slow to kick down, and its manual mode is unresponsive. It is not as crisp as the ZF 8-speeds in German rivals.
With the FWD T5 dropped, AWD is standard on every 2020 US S90. The T6 uses a mechanical system and the T8 drives the rear axle electrically (eAWD). There is no torque vectoring or terrain management beyond drive modes.
There are two powertrains: the 316 hp T6 gas AWD and the 400 hp T8 plug-in hybrid. The electrified option counts, but with the T5 gone there is no economy engine, mild hybrid or EV, so the choice is narrower than in 2019 and than some rivals offer.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the S90's weakest categories.0.85F
Under the PHEV convention this is the charge-sustaining figure for the 2020 T8 AWD: 30 MPG once the battery is depleted. That is modest, because the twincharged 2.0L is moving a heavy AWD sedan. The 2020 EPA label rates the electric side at 60 MPGe, down from 71 MPGe for 2019.
28 MPG in the city in hybrid mode is well above the gas-only T6, because regeneration and electric assist help in stop-start driving.
On the highway the battery is soon depleted and the T8 manages 31 MPG, which is low for a plug-in sedan.
EPA's 490-mile total range covers touring needs. It is limited by the 15.9-gallon tank, and the small battery adds little.
21 EPA electric miles covers only short commutes and sits at the bottom of the plug-in sedan band. The extended-range pack (38 mi) did not arrive until 2023.
EPA's blended electricity-plus-gasoline cost is $2,050/yr. With only 21 electric miles, most driving still burns premium fuel, so the saving is smaller than for longer-range plug-ins.
This is mixed. The twincharged engine requires premium fuel, which makes every gas mile costly. The battery is easy to keep charged (about 3 hours on 240V, and overnight on 120V works), and the lack of DC fast charging is normal for a PHEV. Because the short electric range means most miles are gas miles, the premium requirement dominates.
3SafetyMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.07C
NHTSA never crash-tested the 2020 S90 and has no SafetyRatings entry for that model year. No year of this generation carries an NHTSA star rating, so the value is 0 (never rated). That reflects the car's low US sales volume, not a poor crash result.
The 2020 S90 rated Good in all six IIHS crashworthiness tests, with one Acceptable sub-measure: driver torso in the side test. It earned no award for 2020, though. The 2020 criteria required better headlights than the Marginal lamps most 2020 cars carried, and the car sits between its 2017–19 Top Safety Picks and its 2021–23 TSP+ awards. All Good with no award puts it at the top of the 50–79 band.
The IntelliSafe suite is standard on every 2020 S90 trim, the T8 plug-in hybrid included. It covers City Safety AEB with pedestrian, cyclist and large-animal detection, Pilot Assist adaptive cruise with steering assist, Lane Keeping Aid, BLIS, cross-traffic alert, rear auto-braking and run-off-road mitigation. The score stops short of the top because the 360° camera was a package option.
The standard City Safety system rated Superior in IIHS vehicle-to-vehicle testing and Advanced in the daytime pedestrian test, which applies from 2020 on. It avoided the 12 mph crossing adult and the 25 mph parallel adult. IIHS had no nighttime pedestrian test for 2020, so that part of the evaluation is unmeasured.
BLIS with steer assist, rear cross-traffic alert and rear automatic braking are standard on every 2020 trim, so the coverage includes active intervention rather than warnings alone. It loses points to the best in class because there is no safe-exit warning.
Lane Keeping Aid and lane-departure warning are standard. The Pilot Assist centering on this generation draws consistent reviewer complaints about wandering and confusion at breaks in lane lines, so it works but does not earn trust.
Pilot Assist adaptive cruise is standard on every trim and covers the full speed range with stop-and-go; following and resuming are smooth. The combined highway assist loses points because its steering half is unreliable (see 3.2.4), it has no lane-change assist, and the set speed steps in awkward 5 mph increments.
The car has no hands-free capability. Pilot Assist needs hands on the wheel and disengages without steering input, and no 2020 Volvo offered hands-free driving in the US.
The standard LED headlights rate Marginal. Only cars with the Advanced package, which adds curve-adaptive lamps with high-beam assist, reach Acceptable, and no 2020 configuration rates Good. These headlights are why the 2020 car missed an IIHS award.
Visibility is average for the class. The raked windshield brings thick A-pillars, and the high beltline limits the view over the shoulder. Standard BLIS and the backup camera help, while the 360° camera is an Advanced-package option.
IIHS rates the LATCH setup Acceptable. The two outboard positions have full LATCH and the center has a tether only. The anchors need little force but are awkward to maneuver around, and the long-wheelbase rear seat leaves ample room for car seats.
4Space & ComfortOne of the S90's strongest categories.2.76B-
Every 2020 US S90 is a five-seat sedan. The center rear seat is compromised by the tunnel hump that houses the T8's battery.
37.8 in is mid-pack for a mid-size luxury sedan. The panoramic moonroof is standard in 2020, so this is the figure buyers actually get.
42.2 in is slightly above the segment midpoint, and the wide-range power seats make it usable for tall drivers.
Rear headroom equals the front figure. The flat roofline over the long-wheelbase rear cabin avoids the taper some rivals have.
Rear legroom is the S90's defining strength. The US car has used the long-wheelbase body since MY2018, giving roughly three inches more rear legroom than the 5 Series, E-Class or A6.
At 13.5 cu ft the trunk is one of the smallest in the class, though the wide opening and fold-flat rear seat help. One spec listing quotes 15.4 cu ft, so confidence is MEDIUM rather than HIGH.
Small-item storage is weak: a shallow console bin, a touchscreen-centric dash with few cubbies, no underfloor bins and no AC power. Wireless phone charging was not yet standard; it arrived as standard equipment for 2021. The 60/40 split-fold rear seat with ski pass-through is the only flexible touch.
Volvo's seats are a segment benchmark, and the Inscription adds extra padding and ventilated leather. The long-wheelbase rear bench is comfortable for adults, apart from the center-hump middle position.
The ride is tuned for comfort, and the optional FOUR-C air suspension makes it plush. Edmunds flags a rough ride on the optional larger wheels, and the standard steel-spring setup is less refined than the class best.
The cabin is quiet at a cruise, and short trips can run silently on electricity. With only 21 mi of electric range the twincharged four-cylinder runs often, and it is coarse under load, which keeps the car behind the quietest German and Lexus rivals.
On the T8 Inscription, heated front seats, a panoramic moonroof, ventilated front seats and remote preconditioning through Volvo On Call are standard. The heated steering wheel and heated rear seats are a $750 Climate Package option; the wheel did not become standard until 2021. Massage seats and four-zone climate are also extra-cost.
5Cost of OwnershipThe S90's lowest-graded category.0.00F
The T8 plug-in hybrid is the scored configuration, and for 2020 the T8 R-Design and Inscription both list at $63,200 before destination. That is roughly $9,000 above the top of the sedan pricing band, so the item floors. The 2021 price cut later brought the T8 down to $60,050.
The Inscription was the volume T8 grade, and the scored value uses its list price. Unlike 2021 and later, 2020 buyers could still claim a $5,419 federal plug-in tax credit, which offset part of the price. Even after the credit the car stays above the sedan band.
Volvo's complimentary scheduled maintenance covers the first three years, which keeps the five-year total below the German rivals. Years four and five carry European-luxury service rates and the extra T8 hybrid hardware. The figure sits between the 2019 and 2021 estimates for the same generation, and KBB gives the 2020 a strong 4.7/5 consumer reliability rating.
The 2020 car is about six years old, so observed values set the anchor. KBB's current trade-in of $24,600 on a $64,195 T8 Inscription is about 38%, and the T8 R-Design is about 35%. Working back one year and checking against iSeeCars' plug-in figure gives about 40%. That puts it between the 2019 and 2021 cars and near the lower end of the sedan band.
Volvo's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs one year longer than the 3-year/36,000-mile mainstream norm. That matches the German luxury standard.
The scored value is the 8-year/100,000-mile federal minimum for the plug-in hybrid battery. Volvo offers no separate, longer powertrain warranty in the US, so the T8's gas engine and transmission are covered only for 4 years/50,000 miles.
This is a real advantage over BMW, Mercedes and Audi, which no longer included scheduled maintenance by 2020. The package covers three years/36,000 miles of factory services, plus 4 years of unlimited-mile roadside assistance and Volvo On Call connected services. There was no charging credit or other plug-in perk.
$64,195 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (40% retained, or about $25,678) leaves about $38,517 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,200 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $43,717 in total.
6Reliability & QualityGrades below the middle of the scale.1.50D
Mixed signals leaning to the downside. The 2020 S90 is the fourth year of the 2017-launched design (the first facelift was still a year away), so the hardware was settled, but the brand-level data for this model-year cohort sits below average at both 90 days (Volvo below the 166 PP100 industry average in the 2020 IQS) and three years (215 PP100 against 186 in the 2023 VDS, which surveys 2020-MY owners), and the scored T8 later drew a high-voltage battery fire recall. NHTSA holds zero owner complaints for the model year, which keeps it mid-band.
Volvo has sat in the bottom third of J.D. Power's quality and dependability studies throughout the period that bears on a 2020 car and has since slid further. Problems cluster in infotainment and electronics rather than mechanicals, which limits catastrophic risk but not ownership annoyance.
Three campaigns touch the 2020 S90, and one is exactly the kind this item's low band names: the March 2025 recall of 2020–2021 S90 plug-in hybrids for a high-voltage battery module that can short-circuit when fully charged and parked, raising fire risk, with owners told not to charge until the module is inspected or replaced — squarely on the scored T8. The other two are a low-pressure fuel pump fuse that can blow and stall the car, and an AEB software/hardware mismatch filed against the S90L but returned for the S90 by NHTSA. NHTSA lists no owner complaints.
The 2020 T8 pairs the compound-charged (turbo plus supercharger) VEA 2.0-litre four with the second-generation ERAD electric rear axle and the pack enlarged to 11.6 kWh for 2020. The VEA block has no systemic failure mode, but ERAD2 is the clutch-pack design Volvo replaced wholesale with ERAD3 for 2022.5, and this car's battery module is the subject of a fire-risk recall. Mixed history with known weak points, so mid-band.
The cabin is the S90's strongest suit: open-pore wood, leather or Nappa, metal mesh and brushed-metal trim and the Orrefors crystal shifter on the T8 Inscription, with reviewers placing it at or near the top of the mid-size luxury class for materials and design. Held short of the very top by the Sensus infotainment's laggy logic and graphics.
Physical assembly of the Daqing-built car draws few complaints — no rattle, gap or trim recall and no NHTSA owner complaints for 2020 — but the item also counts initial quality, where Volvo's 2020-MY cohort scored below the industry average. Those problems skew to infotainment and connectivity rather than panel fit, which keeps it mid-band.
Roughly 280 US retailers is national coverage but thin next to BMW, Mercedes or Lexus, and Volvo's measured service satisfaction has slipped near the bottom of the premium brands. A 2020 buyer got three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance, and the T8 powertrain is shared with the high-volume XC60/XC90, but the S90 nameplate was withdrawn from the US after 2025.
Routine repair costs are normal for a luxury sedan and Volvo has a healthy independent parts ecosystem (FCP Euro, IPD, Skandix), with most T8 hardware shared with the volume XC60/XC90. The drag is specific to this PHEV: an ERAD2 rear drive unit and high-voltage pack that are four- to five-figure exposures once the 8-year battery term ends, on a discontinued, China-built nameplate.
7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.77C-
The 2020 S90 has a single 9-inch portrait Sensus screen on every trim, with no larger option. That is small for the mid-size luxury class.
Sensus Connect has a clean, tablet-like layout, but climate, seat and drive settings are buried in the touchscreen with almost no physical controls. It is slow to respond, smudges easily, and critics call it distracting and unintuitive.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, but only over a USB connection. No trim offers wireless projection.
Sensus Navigation is standard and serviceable, with map updates over the car's connection. Voice recognition is command-based and clumsy, though, and most owners default to phone projection. Google built-in arrived only with later model years.
The standard system is a 10-speaker Volvo High Performance setup, competent but not premium. Harman Kardon is an $800 upgrade (13 speakers, standard on the R-Design), and the optional 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system ranks among the best factory systems at any price. Harman Kardon became standard across the line only for 2021.
A 12.3-inch full-digital driver display with a map view is standard. It offers only a few fixed layouts, not the freely configurable displays BMW, Mercedes and Audi offer.
The 2020 Sensus car has no meaningful vehicle OTA. Software updates happen at the dealer, and only map data downloads over the air. Volvo's S90 OTA support starts with MY2022.
The Volvo On Call app covers remote lock and unlock, remote start and preconditioning, a car locator, send-to-car destinations and T8 charge status. It is an included-term subscription, there is no digital key, and owners commonly report the app as slow.
USB ports are limited, and U.S. News lists a single USB port as standard. There is no household AC outlet, and wireless charging was not standard; it was added as standard equipment only for 2021.
Proximity keyless entry and push-button start are standard, remote start comes via Volvo On Call, and a hands-free power trunk is available. No phone-as-key is offered.
A rear camera and front/rear parking sensors are standard, the sensors newly so for 2020. The well-regarded 360-degree camera is an Advanced Package option, not standard.
A head-up display is available as an option, not standard on any trim. It is clear but conventional in size.
8Use-Case FitOne of the S90's weakest categories.1.43D
With 40.4 in of rear legroom, rear-facing seats fit without pushing the front seat forward. But IIHS rates the LATCH hardware only Acceptable, the center seat has a tether only, and a 13.5 cu ft trunk takes a stroller reluctantly.
The full IntelliSafe suite is standard: City Safety AEB, Pilot Assist, BLIS, rear auto-brake, and lane keeping. But the 2020 car earned only a Top Safety Pick, not the Plus, because of Marginal/Acceptable headlights. NHTSA never crash-tested it, and the 360 camera costs extra.
Four adults ride comfortably for hours, thanks to excellent seats and the long-wheelbase rear seat. Heated rear seats and the heated wheel are a $750 option, rear amenities are thin, and luggage space with four aboard is the main limit.
It is relaxed in traffic, with electric pull-away, light steering, and standard stop-and-go Pilot Assist. The annoyances are touchscreen-buried controls, an engine that starts often on a 21 mi battery, and lane-centering that wanders.
A commute under 21 miles can run on electricity, but anything longer burns premium fuel at 30 MPG. EPA estimates $2,050 a year blended versus $2,750 on gas alone. Insurance and maintenance cost typical luxury-sedan money.
At about 200 in long on a 120.5 in wheelbase, it is a big car in town, with a 38.7 ft turning circle and thick A-pillars. Newly standard parking sensors help, but the 360 camera is an option.
This is not a work vehicle. There is no factory tow package or US tow rating, and cargo is limited to a 13.5 cu ft sealed trunk.
It is built for luxury, not hard use. A complex twincharged 2.0L plus a hybrid system, optional air springs, low-profile wheels and leather and wood surfaces all suffer under abuse.
There are almost no work provisions: no AC outlet, no vehicle-to-load power, no factory hitch in North America, and no upfit ecosystem.
It is a strong highway tourer, with benchmark seats, a quiet ride, standard adaptive cruise and 490 mi of total EPA range. It is held back by tiring lane-centering, a coarse engine under load and premium fuel.
Standard eAWD makes it a credible ski-trip car on plowed roads, but that is the limit. It has about 5.6 in of ground clearance, no roof rails, no North American hitch and no terrain modes, and the electric rear axle's traction support fades as the battery depletes.
The 13.5 cu ft trunk is wide and low, and a 60/40 fold-flat rear seat with a ski pass-through extends it. There are no roof rails, no hitch and no underfloor storage.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the S90's strongest categories.2.22C
It is sure-footed, with controlled body motions, especially on the optional FOUR-C air suspension. The heavy long-wheelbase body and comfort tune bring some roll, and it doesn't want to be hustled.
The steering is light and direct enough for easy parking, but it is numb and short on feedback compared with German rivals.
The regen-to-friction blend is smooth and easy to modulate for a PHEV. No instrumented 60–0 figure was found for the 2020 T8, and it carries a lot of mass, so it stays below the top band.
Electric/gas transitions are seamless, and the rear e-motor fills in low-end response. The engine is rough at idle and under hard acceleration, the 8-speed is hesitant on kickdown, and the small battery means frequent engine running.
It is silent in EV mode and quiet at a cruise. Worked hard, the stressed twincharged four sounds and feels coarser than the six-cylinders in rival cars at this price.
The US long-wheelbase body turns wide, and no rear-axle steering is offered.
The seats are superb and widely adjustable, and the dash is clean. But climate and many routine functions live in the Sensus touchscreen, and the thick A-pillars intrude.
With 400 hp and a Volvo-claimed 4.8 s to 60, the T8 is quick. Its character is that of a serene cruiser with numb steering and a buzzy four-cylinder, so it is pleasant but forgettable.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.04C
The T8 comes well equipped. Standard equipment includes eAWD, leather, a panoramic moonroof, heated front seats, a 9-inch Sensus touchscreen with CarPlay/Android Auto, a 12.3-inch digital cluster, and Pilot Assist with City Safety AEB. A comparable 530e or E-Class charges extra for several of those. Bowers & Wilkins audio, air suspension, the 360° camera and the heated rear seats/steering wheel were extra-cost options, and the 2020 T8 cost about $3,000 more than the 2021.
At $64,195 the T8 delivers 400 hp, standard AWD, plug-in capability and a strong equipment list. The $5,419 federal credit then available brought the effective price below a comparably equipped E 450 or 540i xDrive. Heavy depreciation cuts into that: a T8 Inscription now trades in for about 38% of its sticker. Fair value rather than a bargain.
The 2020 lineup offered a T6 gas engine in Momentum, R-Design and Inscription trims, plus the T8 plug-in hybrid as an R-Design or Inscription, all AWD. Rivals offered several engines, rear-drive entry models and M/AMG/RS performance versions that Volvo did not match.
US sales were tiny for the segment and falling: about 1,800 units in 2020, down from about 2,500 in 2019. The 5 Series, E-Class and Lexus ES each sell tens of thousands a year. Poor sales were later one of the stated reasons Volvo pulled the S90 from the US.
Volvo's brand was strong in 2020, with a safety reputation, well-liked Scandinavian design and growing US SUV sales. It is still seen as a respected alternative to BMW, Mercedes and Audi rather than an aspirational badge.
A slow-selling luxury sedan is usually easy to negotiate on, and the 2020 model year came before the 2021 chip-shortage inventory squeeze. Volvo offered lease support and loyalty/conquest cash, and the $5,419 federal plug-in credit added a real buyer benefit on the T8.
2020 is the fourth model year of a generation that launched for 2017 on the SPA platform. That puts it mid-cycle: current, but not cutting-edge. The first facelift (sequential LED taillights) was revealed in February 2020 and reached the US as the 2021 model, and the Google-based infotainment followed for 2022.
Reviewers liked it but rarely picked it over rivals. U.S. News gave it 8.7 and ranked it near the top of luxury midsize cars, and KBB rated it 4.0/5. It earned a 2020 IIHS Top Safety Pick, missing the Plus only on headlights. Critics praised its interior and rear space but faulted ride refinement and the Sensus infotainment.
