The verdict
A mixed-report mid-size luxury sedan, strong on safety and held back by ownership.
The 2021 S90 T8 Recharge is a quick, beautifully finished long-wheelbase luxury sedan. It has 40.4 inches of rear legroom, benchmark seats, a 400 hp plug-in hybrid drivetrain and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+. Two things undercut it. The early 21-mile electric range means most miles burn premium fuel at 30 MPG, and the car has lost more than half of its $61,095 sticker. Volvo's weak reliability record and a battery fire recall on exactly this plug-in model also call for care when buying used. Bought at today's prices with the recall work confirmed, it is a lot of comfortable, safe car for the money.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainOne of the S90's strongest categories.2.96B-
The scored T8 Recharge combines a turbocharged and supercharged 2.0L four with a rear-axle electric motor for 400 hp total — strong for a mid-size luxury sedan and the most powerful S90 of 2021. The gas-only T6 AWD makes 316 hp.
472 lb-ft of combined system torque, with the electric motor filling in low-rpm response, tops the sedan band. The T6 makes 295 lb-ft.
A 4.6-second 0–60 time is quick for a ~4,600 lb plug-in executive sedan, ahead of most four-cylinder rivals and close to six-cylinder ones. The T6 runs about 6.0 seconds.
Pulling away on electric power is silent and smooth, and the e-motor hides turbo/supercharger lag. But the twincharged four sounds coarse and buzzy when worked hard, which suits a luxury sedan poorly, and reviewers note occasional lurches when the engine cuts in. That puts it mid-band, behind six-cylinder and hybrid-six rivals.
The Aisin 8-speed automatic shifts smoothly in normal driving and suits the car's relaxed character. It can be slow to kick down and its manual mode is not responsive, so it falls short of the crispest rival 8-speeds (ZF in BMW/Audi).
AWD comes on every 2021 US S90. The T6 uses a Haldex-type mechanical system, and the T8 drives the rear axle electrically (eAWD). There is no torque vectoring or terrain management beyond drive modes, so it lands at the top of the 'available on most trims' band and not in the sophisticated tier.
There are two powertrains: the 316 hp T6 gas AWD and the 400 hp T8 plug-in hybrid. The electrified option counts for something, but with no FWD/economy engine, mild hybrid, or EV, the choice is narrower than some rivals (E-Class, 5 Series) offer.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the S90's weakest categories.0.85F
Under the PHEV convention this is the charge-sustaining figure for the 2021 T8 Recharge AWD: 30 MPG once the battery is depleted, from a twincharged 2.0L moving a heavy AWD sedan. The electric side is a modest 60 MPGe, below the 66 MPGe of the 2023+ extended-range car.
28 MPG in the city in hybrid mode is well above the 21 MPG of the gas-only T6, thanks to regeneration and electric assist in stop-start driving.
On the highway the battery is quickly depleted, and the T8 manages 31 MPG. That is slightly worse than the non-plug-in T6's 32 MPG because it carries the battery's weight, and it is low against plug-in sedan rivals.
EPA's total range of 490 miles easily covers touring needs. It is limited by the 15.9-gallon tank and the 30 MPG charge-sustaining economy, and the small battery adds little.
21 EPA electric miles is short. It handles only short commutes on electricity and sits at the bottom of the plug-in sedan band; the 2023 extended-range pack later raised this to 38 miles.
EPA's blended electricity-plus-gasoline cost is $2,050/yr. With only 21 electric miles, most driving still burns premium fuel, so the saving over the gas T6 ($3,300) is real but smaller than for longer-range plug-ins.
This is mixed. The twincharged engine requires premium with no regular-grade fallback, which makes every gas mile costly. The battery, though, is easy to keep charged: about 3 hours on 240V, and overnight on a 120V outlet is practical. There is no DC fast charging, which is normal for a PHEV. The premium requirement weighs more because the short electric range means most miles are gas miles.
3SafetyThe S90's best-graded category.3.07B
NHTSA never crash-tested the 2021 S90. The 2021 S90 T8 (the Recharge plug-in hybrid) is listed in the SafetyRatings database, but every frontal, side and rollover field reads "Not Rated". The 4.5★ placeholder follows the dataset's convention for untested low-volume luxury sedans (it matches the 2024 S90 entry): the car went untested because of its volume, not because it performed badly.
This is the 2021 S90 at its peak IIHS standing. It earned a Top Safety Pick+ (for vehicles built after September 2020) with Good ratings in all six crashworthiness tests then current: both small-overlap tests, moderate overlap, side, roof strength and head restraints. The one Acceptable sub-measure is torso injury in the side test. It sits short of the top of the band because the award depends on build date (earlier builds carried Marginal headlights) and because the side and moderate-overlap results come from the older test protocols.
As is Volvo's practice, the IntelliSafe suite is standard on every 2021 S90 trim, the T8 Recharge included. That covers City Safety AEB with steer support, Pilot Assist adaptive cruise with lane centering, Lane Keeping Aid, BLIS, cross-traffic alert, rear auto-braking, road-sign information and run-off-road mitigation. The score stops just short of the 2024 entry because the 360-degree camera was still a package option on 2021 rather than standard.
The standard City Safety system earned Superior in IIHS vehicle-to-vehicle testing and Advanced in the daytime pedestrian test. Its pedestrian results were strong: it avoided the 12 mph crossing adult and the 25 mph parallel adult, and cut 30 mph off the 37 mph parallel-adult run. IIHS's nighttime pedestrian test did not exist for 2021, so that part of the evaluation is unmeasured.
BLIS with steer assist, rear cross-traffic alert and rear automatic braking are standard on every 2021 trim, so the coverage includes active intervention rather than warnings alone. It is marked down against the best in class because there is no rear-occupant safe-exit warning.
Lane Keeping Aid and lane-departure warning are standard and do their narrow job. Pilot Assist centering on this generation is a known weak point, though: reviewers report wandering, ping-ponging and confusion at breaks in lane lines, and some stop using it. It works, but it does not inspire trust.
The adaptive cruise is standard on every trim, works across the full speed range with stop-and-go, and is smooth at following and resuming. The combined highway-assist package loses points because its steering half is unreliable (see 3.2.4), it has no lane-change assist, and the cruise buttons step the set speed in awkward 5 mph increments.
The car has no hands-free capability. Pilot Assist is hands-on: it warns and then disengages when it detects no steering torque. No 2021 Volvo offered hands-free highway driving in the US.
MY2021 straddles a headlight change. Cars built after September 2020 get Acceptable-rated LED reflector lamps, while earlier 2021 builds carry the Marginal-rated variant. Both have standard curve-adaptive lighting and high-beam assist. Neither variant reaches Good, which puts the car below the segment norm.
Visibility is average for the class. The raked windshield brings thick A-pillars, and the high beltline and rear pillars limit the view over the shoulder. Standard BLIS and the backup camera help, but the 360° camera that compensates on later years was a package option in 2021.
IIHS rates the LATCH setup Acceptable. The two outboard seats have full LATCH hardware with visible anchors that need little force, but they are difficult to maneuver around. The center seat has a tether only. The long-wheelbase rear seat leaves ample room for rear-facing seats.
4Space & ComfortOne of the S90's strongest categories.2.83B-
Every 2021 US S90, the T8 Recharge Inscription and R-Design included, is a five-seat sedan. The center rear seat is compromised by the transmission/battery tunnel hump.
37.8 in is mid-pack for a mid-size luxury sedan. The panoramic moonroof is standard, so this is the figure buyers actually get.
42.2 in is slightly above the segment midpoint. Power front seats with a wide adjustment range make that space usable for tall drivers.
Rear headroom equals the front figure. The flat roofline over the long-wheelbase rear cabin avoids the coupe-style taper some rivals have.
Rear legroom is the S90's defining strength. From MY2018 the US car uses the long-wheelbase body, which gives roughly three inches more rear legroom than the 5 Series, E-Class or A6.
At 13.5 cu ft the trunk is one of the smallest in the class. The T8 loses no trunk space to its battery, which sits in the center tunnel. One tester found the space more usable than the number suggests.
Small-item storage is weak. The center console bin is shallow, the touchscreen-centric dash has few cubbies, and there are no underfloor bins or onboard AC power. The 2021 car adds a standard wireless charging pad, but there is nothing clever beyond that. The optional Lounge Package also deletes the rear split-fold and ski pass-through.
Volvo's seats are a segment benchmark, supportive and widely adjustable, with massage available. The long-wheelbase rear bench is comfortable for adults, apart from the center-hump middle position.
The ride is tuned for comfort and stays well isolated even on 20-inch wheels. The optional FOUR-C adaptive suspension with rear air springs makes it plush. On the standard steel-spring setup the ride is a step firmer and less refined than the class best.
The cabin is quiet at a cruise, and the 21-mile electric range removes engine noise from short trips. The twincharged four-cylinder is coarse under hard acceleration, and with such a small battery the engine runs often. That keeps it behind the quietest German and Lexus rivals.
Heated front seats, a heated steering wheel (newly standard for 2021), a panoramic moonroof and remote cabin preconditioning through Volvo On Call come on the T8. Heated rear seats come in the optional Climate Package. Ventilated and massaging seats and the rear-comfort content come in the optional Lounge Package. Rich content overall, but more of it is optional than on the later Plus/Ultimate cars.
5Cost of OwnershipThe S90's lowest-graded category.0.20F
The T8 plug-in hybrid is the scored configuration. For 2021 both T8 grades, R-Design and Inscription, list at the same $60,050 before destination. That entry price is about $6,000 past the top of the sedan pricing band, so the item floors.
The Inscription was the volume T8 grade, and in 2021 it shared its $60,050 base price with the R-Design. The scored value uses that list price. Options such as Bowers & Wilkins audio, air suspension and the Advanced package commonly raise the sticker by several thousand dollars. As a China-built car it got no federal purchase credit to offset the price.
Volvo's complimentary scheduled maintenance covers the first three annual services, which keeps the five-year total below the German mid-size luxury sedans. Years four and five carry European-luxury service rates, large tires, and the extra hardware of the T8 plug-in hybrid. The figure sits between the lower nameplate-wide CarEdge estimate and KBB's higher projection.
A 2021 car is now about five years old, so this uses observed market values rather than projections. KBB's current fair-purchase prices are retail, so they overstate what an owner gets back. iSeeCars rates the S90 plug-in hybrid as the worst-retaining S90 variant. The 2025 US discontinuation also weighs on demand.
Volvo's New Vehicle Limited Warranty runs one year longer than the 3-year/36,000-mile mainstream norm. It matches the German luxury standard but falls short of Genesis's 5-year term.
The scored value is the 8-year/100,000-mile federal minimum for the plug-in hybrid battery. Volvo offers no separate, longer powertrain warranty in the US, so the T8's gas engine and 8-speed automatic are covered only for 4 years/50,000 miles.
This is a real advantage over BMW, Mercedes and Audi, which include no scheduled maintenance at this point. It covers three years of factory services, plus 4 years of unlimited-mile roadside assistance and Volvo On Call connected services. It stops short of the 90s because the T8 comes with no charging credit or other plug-in perk.
$61,095 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (43% retained, or about $26,271) leaves about $34,824 in depreciation. Add the projected $5,100 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $39,924 in total.
6Reliability & QualityGrades below the middle of the scale.1.48D
Mixed signals with the weight on the downside. Consumer Reports publishes no reliability verdict for the 2021 S90 because the owner sample is too small, so the model-specific read is thin; the brand-level data for this exact model-year cohort is poor at both 90 days (210 PP100 against a 162 average in the 2021 IQS) and three years (roughly 245 PP100 against 190 in the 2024 VDS, which surveys 2021-MY owners), and the scored T8 later drew a high-voltage battery fire recall. Offsetting that, 2021 is the fifth year of the design with the first facelift being cosmetic, and NHTSA holds zero owner complaints for the model year.
Volvo has sat in the bottom third of J.D. Power's quality and dependability studies through the whole period that bears on a 2021 car and has since slid further. Its 2021-MY cohort scored well above the industry problem rate at both the 90-day and three-year marks, and the later VDS editions put the brand 23rd of 31 and then second-to-last; problems cluster in infotainment and electronics rather than mechanicals, which limits catastrophic risk but not ownership annoyance.
Only two campaigns, but one is exactly the kind this item's low band names: the March 2025 recall of 2020–2021 S90 plug-in hybrids (from NHTSA investigation EQ22001) for a high-voltage battery module that can short-circuit when fully charged and parked, raising fire risk, with owners told not to charge until the module is inspected or replaced. That lands squarely on the scored T8 and stranded its electric capability for months. The second, a hydraulic brake-unit weld defect, is listed against the S90L (long-wheelbase, primarily China-market) rather than the US car. NHTSA lists no owner complaints.
The 2021 T8 carries the pre-redesign hybrid hardware: the compound-charged (turbo plus supercharger) VEA 2.0-litre four with the second-generation ERAD electric rear axle and the smaller 11.6 kWh pack. The VEA block has no systemic failure mode, but ERAD2 is the clutch-pack design whose failures led Volvo to replace it wholesale with ERAD3 for 2022.5, and this car's battery module is the subject of a fire-risk recall. Mixed history with the known weak points still present, so the middle of the band rather than above it.
The cabin is the S90's strongest suit and was still fresh in 2021: open-pore wood, leather or Nappa, metal mesh and brushed-metal trim and the Orrefors crystal shifter on the T8 Inscription, with reviewers placing it at or near the top of the mid-size luxury class for materials and design. Held short of the very top because the Sensus infotainment and secondary graphics already trailed BMW and Mercedes in presentation.
Physical assembly of the Daqing-built car draws few complaints — no rattle, gap or trim recall for the 2021 model year and no NHTSA owner complaints — but the item also counts initial-quality reports, and the 2021-MY Volvo cohort scored poorly at 210 PP100 against a 162 average. Those problems skew to infotainment and connectivity rather than misaligned panels, which keeps it mid-band rather than low.
Roughly 280 US retailers is national coverage but thin next to BMW, Mercedes or Lexus, and Volvo's measured service satisfaction has slipped to near the bottom of the premium brands. A 2021 buyer did get three years of complimentary scheduled maintenance, and the T8 powertrain is shared with the high-volume XC60/XC90 so technicians know it, but the S90 nameplate itself was withdrawn from the US after 2025.
Routine repair costs are normal for a luxury sedan and Volvo enjoys a healthy independent parts ecosystem (FCP Euro, IPD, Skandix), with most T8 hardware shared with the volume XC60/XC90. The drag is specific to this 2021 PHEV: an ERAD2 rear drive unit and a high-voltage pack that are four- to five-figure exposures once the 8-year battery term ends, and a discontinued, China-built nameplate.
7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.91C-
The 2021 S90 keeps the original 9-inch portrait Sensus screen on every trim, with no larger option. That is small for the mid-size luxury class.
The 2021 car runs the pre-Google Sensus Connect system. It is a clean, tablet-like layout with better response than early SPA cars, and most tasks take one or two taps or swipes. But climate, seat and drive settings are all buried in the touchscreen with almost no physical controls, the screen smudges easily, and reviewers call it dated next to German rivals. Usable, but over-reliant on touch.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on the 2021 Sensus system but work over USB only. No trim or option offers wireless projection, which puts the car at the bottom of the wired-standard band.
Sensus Navigation (HERE-based) is built in and serviceable, with map updates over Volvo On Call. But voice recognition is command-based and clumsy, and most owners default to phone projection. The 2022 switch to Google built-in fixed both weaknesses; 2021 does not have it.
A 14-speaker Harman Kardon system is standard on the 2021 S90. The optional 19-speaker Bowers & Wilkins system is widely rated among the best factory systems at any price.
A 12.3-inch full-digital driver display can show a map view, and it is standard equipment on the T8 Recharge. It offers only a few fixed layouts, not the freely configurable displays of BMW, Mercedes or Audi. One review lists it as optional, which caps confidence at MEDIUM.
The 2021 Sensus car has no meaningful vehicle OTA. Software updates are done at the dealer, and only map data downloads over the air. Volvo's OTA capability on the S90 starts with the MY2022 Google built-in cars, and the later Volvo Car UX OTA rollout covers S90 MY22–25, not MY21.
The Volvo On Call app handles the core functions: remote lock/unlock, remote start and preconditioning, car locator, send-to-car destinations, and charging status for the T8. The service is included for an initial term, then becomes a paid subscription. There is no digital key, and owners commonly report a slow, unreliable app.
Wireless phone charging became standard for 2021, and there are USB ports up front plus rear charging ports. The port count is modest, older connectors are mixed in, and there is no household AC outlet.
Proximity keyless entry and push-button start are standard. Remote start comes via Volvo On Call, and a hands-free power trunk is available. No phone-as-key is offered.
A rear camera and front/rear parking sensors are standard. The 360-degree camera, praised as one of the cleanest in the business, is an option in the Advanced Package rather than standard, unlike on the 2024 car. Park Assist Pilot automated parking is also available.
A graphical head-up display is available, but only in the optional Advanced Package. It is clear and well positioned but conventional in size.
8Use-Case FitOne of the S90's weakest categories.1.47D
The 40.4 in of rear legroom makes rear-facing seats easy to fit without pushing the front seat forward. But IIHS rates the LATCH hardware only Acceptable, the center seat has a tether only, front door openings are small, and a 13.5 cu ft trunk takes a stroller reluctantly.
The 2021 car earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, and the full IntelliSafe suite is standard on every trim: City Safety AEB, Pilot Assist, BLIS with steer assist, cross-traffic alert and rear auto-brake. Gaps: NHTSA never crash-tested it, the headlights rate only Acceptable or Marginal, the 360 camera costs extra, and there is no rear-occupant alert.
Four adults ride comfortably for hours thanks to the long-wheelbase rear seat and excellent front seats. Rear amenities are thinner than on later years because heated rear seats sit in the optional Climate Package. Luggage space with four aboard is the main limit, at 13.5 cu ft.
It is relaxed in traffic, with seamless electric pull-away, a supple ride, light steering and standard stop-and-go adaptive cruise. The annoyances are touchscreen-buried controls, an engine that starts often given the 21-mile battery, rough idle vibration when it does, and Pilot Assist centering that wanders.
A commute under 21 miles can run on electricity, but anything longer burns premium fuel at 30 MPG. EPA's blended annual cost is $2,050, below the $2,750 for gas-only running. Insurance, tires and maintenance cost typical luxury-sedan money, so overall commuting cost is roughly average for the class.
At about 200 in long on a 120.5 in wheelbase, it is a big car in town, with a 38.7 ft turning circle and thick A-pillars. Light steering and parking sensors help, but the 360 camera that makes parking easy is an Advanced Package option on 2021 cars.
This is not a work vehicle. Volvo offers no factory tow package or US tow rating for the S90, and cargo is limited to a 13.5 cu ft sealed trunk.
It is built for luxury, not hard use. The complex twincharged 2.0L with an 11.6 kWh hybrid system, optional rear air springs, large low-profile wheels and leather-only interiors are all fragile under abuse. Volvo's reliability record is weak and it has no fleet history.
There are almost no work provisions. It has no AC outlet or vehicle-to-load power, no factory hitch in North America, no upfit ecosystem, and leather and wood surfaces throughout.
This is a strong highway tourer: benchmark seats, a quiet and supple ride, standard adaptive cruise and 490 miles of total EPA range. It is held back by Pilot Assist lane centering that tires drivers rather than relieving them, a coarse engine under load, and premium fuel.
Standard AWD and good winter comfort make it a credible ski-trip car on plowed roads, but that is the extent of it. With about 5.6 in of ground clearance and a long wheelbase, it has no roof rails, no factory hitch in North America, no outlets and no terrain modes, and the electric rear axle's traction fades as the small battery depletes.
The 13.5 cu ft trunk is wide and low, and a folding rear seat with a ski pass-through extends it. Choosing the Lounge Package deletes both the split-fold and the pass-through. There are no roof rails, no hitch and no underfloor storage.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.28C
It is sure-footed, with well-controlled body motions, especially on the optional FOUR-C air suspension. The heavy long-wheelbase body and comfort tune bring some body roll, and it doesn't want to be hustled. Secure but unremarkable, close to the G80 and ES.
The steering is light and direct enough to make parking easy, but it is numb. One reviewer faults its lack of precision and feel against rivals.
The regen-to-friction blend is smooth and easy to modulate, which is better than many PHEVs manage. No instrumented 60–0 figure was found for the 2021 T8, and it carries a lot of mass, so it stays below the top band.
Electric/combustion transitions are seamless and the e-motor fills in low-end response. The engine is rough at idle and under hard acceleration, and the 8-speed can hesitate on kickdown. The small 11.6 kWh battery also means more engine running than on later T8s.
It is silent in EV mode and quiet at a cruise. Worked hard, though, the stressed twincharged four sounds and feels coarser than the six-cylinders in rival cars at this price.
The US long-wheelbase body turns wide, and no rear-axle steering is offered, so it sits near the wide end of the sedan band.
The seats are superb and widely adjustable, and the dash is clean with a low seating position. But climate and many routine functions live in the Sensus touchscreen, the front door openings are small, and the thick A-pillars intrude.
At 400 hp and 4.6 s to 60, the T8 is quick. Its character is a serene cruiser with numb steering and a buzzy four, so it is pleasant but forgettable.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.02C
The T8 comes well equipped. Standard equipment includes eAWD, leather, a panoramic moonroof, heated front seats, a 9-inch Sensus touchscreen with CarPlay/Android Auto, and Pilot Assist adaptive cruise with City Safety AEB. A comparable 530e or E-Class charges extra for several of those items. It is not loaded, though: Bowers & Wilkins audio, air suspension, the heated rear seats/steering wheel package and the 360° camera were extra-cost options.
For $61,095 the T8 delivers 400 hp, standard AWD, plug-in capability and a strong equipment list. That undercuts a comparably equipped BMW 745e/540i or Mercedes E 450 by thousands. Heavy depreciation offsets much of that at purchase: the T8 R-Design now retails for about 44% of its sticker. Fair value rather than a bargain.
The 2021 lineup was broader than the later Plus/Ultimate era. It had a T6 gas engine in Momentum, R-Design and Inscription trims, plus the T8 plug-in hybrid as an R-Design or Inscription, all AWD. The sporty R-Design was available with either powertrain. Even so, there was no rear-drive entry car, no six-cylinder and no true performance model, against rivals offering several engines plus M/AMG versions.
US sales were tiny for the segment and falling: about 1,500 units in 2021, down from about 1,800 in 2020 and about 2,500 in 2019. The 5 Series, E-Class and Lexus ES each sell tens of thousands a year. Poor sales were later one of the stated reasons Volvo pulled the S90 from the US.
In 2021 Volvo's brand was at a high point: a strong safety reputation, well-liked Scandinavian design, and US SUVs selling at record volumes. It is still seen as a respected alternative to BMW, Mercedes and Audi rather than an aspirational badge. The S90 itself backed up the safety image in 2021 by earning IIHS Top Safety Pick+.
A slow-selling luxury sedan is usually easy to negotiate on, and Volvo backed it with loyalty/conquest cash and lease support. But the 2021 model year coincided with the chip shortage, which shrank inventory and cut discounts across the industry from mid-2021. Modest deals, not clearance pricing.
2021 is the fifth model year of a generation that launched for 2017 on the SPA platform. It is also the first-facelift year, bringing sequential LED taillights and trim updates. That puts it squarely mid-cycle: current, but not cutting-edge. Its infotainment had not yet moved to the Google-based system adopted for 2022.
Reviewers liked it but rarely picked it over rivals. Ratings: U.S. News 8.0/10, Edmunds 8.5, and KBB ranked it #8 among 2021 luxury mid-size cars. Car and Driver praised its interior and rear space but called the drive less refined than rivals and the infotainment unintuitive. Its one major award was the 2021 IIHS Top Safety Pick+.
