The verdict
A struggling compact luxury suv, strong on driving and held back by ownership.
The 2026 Alfa Romeo Stelvio is the compact luxury SUV for buyers who put driving feel first and everything else a distant second. A standard 280 hp turbo four, standard Q4 all-wheel drive, and a razor-sharp ZF eight-speed deliver a 5.5-second 0-60 and steering that puts most German rivals to shame — but they come packaged in a nine-year-old design with class-tail cargo space, class-tail predicted reliability, one of the worst depreciation curves in the segment (~33% residual after five years), and no hybrid or plug-in option in a segment that has largely moved on. Buy it for the way it drives; understand that you're paying premium-fuel bills for a $52,000 SUV that will be worth roughly $18,000 in five years.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainGrades below the middle of the scale.1.37D
For 2026 the Stelvio lineup is consolidated to a single 2.0L turbo I4 producing 280 hp; the Quadrifoglio's 505 hp 2.9L V6 was discontinued after 2024. Modest output for a compact luxury SUV.
2.0L turbo I4 produces 306 lb-ft on premium fuel from 2,000–4,800 rpm — mid-pack for the segment.
Manufacturer-claimed 5.5 s 0–60 is quick for a compact luxury SUV and among the fastest non-performance variants in the segment thanks to the standard Q4 AWD launch.
The 2.0T revs willingly with strong midrange, but reviewers note some off-boost lag from a stop and an ordinary four-cylinder soundtrack versus German turbo-sixes. Response sharpens noticeably in Dynamic (D) mode.
The ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic is widely praised for crisp, quick shifts and intuitive gear selection; column-mounted aluminum paddles give it a genuine sport-sedan feel. No hunting or clunky downshifts noted.
Rated 3,000 lbs when properly equipped — modest for the class and enough only for small trailers, jet skis, or a light utility trailer.
Q4 all-wheel drive is standard on every 2026 Stelvio — no FWD/RWD option. The system is rear-biased, sending torque forward on demand, but lacks a low range or dedicated terrain modes.
8.1 in of ground clearance is decent for light gravel/dirt roads, but the Stelvio has no skid plates, no low range, no locking differentials, and no dedicated off-road trim — it is unambiguously a pavement-first sport SUV.
For 2026 the lineup is a single powertrain — 2.0L turbo I4 with AWD, gas only. The 505 hp Quadrifoglio V6 was dropped after 2024 and no hybrid or PHEV exists; the strictly limited 63-unit Quadrifoglio Collezione with 2027 delivery is not a mainstream buyable option.
2Efficiency & RangeGrades below the middle of the scale.1.02D
2026 continues the current Stelvio generation unchanged; volume Ti trim uses the 280 hp 2.0T with standard Q4 AWD and 8-speed automatic. Quadrifoglio V6 combined is ~19 MPG.
Weak city figure for the segment reflects the always-on AWD driveline and turbo-four tuned for output over efficiency; no idle-stop-plus-hybrid assist.
Highway figure is the powertrain's stronger side thanks to the 8-speed and light-load boost, but still trails hybridized rivals like the Lexus NX 350h.
Range derived from EPA combined and the 16.9-gal tank; Quadrifoglio real-world range drops to roughly 320 mi.
EPA figure reflects premium-fuel pricing at standard 15k mi and 55/45 city/hwy; Quadrifoglio annual cost jumps above $3,500.
Owner's manual and window sticker call for 91-octane premium unleaded on both the 2.0T and 2.9L V6 - no regular-gas, E85, diesel, or plug-in option exists. Puts the Stelvio in the costliest fuel-cost tier among compact luxury SUVs, with no home-charging offset.
3SafetyMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.96C-
NHTSA has not crash-tested any Stelvio model year in the US. Inferred estimate carries forward the 2017 Euro NCAP 5-star result for the same generation, discounted for the aging platform (9th model year of the current generation).
The Stelvio is not on the 2026 IIHS Top Safety Pick or TSP+ list and has no US IIHS crashworthiness ratings for the current generation. Absence of testing on a nine-year-old platform lands well below the segment norm, where most rivals (GLC, RDX, Corsair, XC60, Q5) hold TSP or TSP+ status.
For 2026 the Stelvio has a comprehensive suite standard across trims: AEB with pedestrian detection and full-stop, active blind-spot with rear cross-traffic alert, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise, traffic sign recognition, intelligent speed control, driver attention alert, and forward collision warning — plus front/rear parking sensors. Lane centering (Active Driving Assist) remains an option, which keeps it out of the 80s.
AEB with pedestrian detection is standard and the sensor suite was refreshed for 2026, but with no IIHS front crash prevention scores for this generation, performance can only be inferred as adequate — well behind rivals with Superior/Advanced IIHS ratings.
Active Blind Spot Assist (intervention, not just alert) plus Rear Cross Traffic Alert are standard for 2026 across the lineup. Coverage is competitive with segment leaders even if 3D surround and safe-exit features are more limited than the newest German rivals.
Lane-keep assist is standard, but true lane centering is bundled in the optional Active Driving Assist package and reviewers of the current generation describe the system as functional rather than confidence-inspiring — noticeably behind Audi/BMW/Mercedes.
Adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go is standard and pairs with lane centering (via optional Active Driving Assist) for Level 2 highway operation. Solid but not the refined highway assist reviewers praise on newer German rivals.
The Stelvio offers no hands-free highway driving system — no equivalent to BlueCruise, Super Cruise, or Drive Pilot. The optional Active Driving Assist is hands-on Level 2 only.
Full-LED adaptive matrix headlights (Trilobe design) with automatic high-beam are standard on 2026 — good hardware for the class — but the Stelvio has no IIHS headlight rating to corroborate real-world reach and glare control.
Traditional SUV greenhouse with reasonable forward and side sightlines and a relatively low beltline for the class; rearward visibility is average with thick C-pillars. Front and rear parking sensors are standard, but a 360-degree camera is only optional on upper trims — the volume Ti trim relies on a basic rear camera.
Cars.com's Car Seat Check gave the Stelvio mostly A/B grades but a C for infant-seat installation because the two sets of outboard lower anchors sit deep under hinged covers and rear space is tight — the front passenger seat had to be moved fully forward with a rear-facing infant seat. Workable but below segment-average family friendliness, and the layout is unchanged for 2026.
4Space & ComfortOne of the Stelvio's weakest categories.0.46F
Two-row five-seat layout across the entire Stelvio range; no third-row option.
Standard-roof measurement; the power sunroof reduces headroom slightly.
Front legroom is competitive for the compact luxury SUV segment.
Rear headroom is adequate but on the low side of the compact luxury SUV segment.
Rear legroom is one of the tightest in the compact luxury SUV segment — a long-standing Stelvio weakness noted in nearly every review.
The Stelvio is a strict two-row five-seat SUV; a third row has never been offered on this platform and no trim adds one. Scores at the floor of the 0-49 'no third row' band, matching the Honda HR-V precedent.
Cargo behind the rear seats is among the smallest in the compact luxury SUV class — well below the 25 cu ft segment floor. Reviewers consistently flag it as a Stelvio drawback.
Maximum cargo volume sits at the bottom of the compact luxury SUV segment, trailing rivals such as the Audi Q5 (54.2), BMW X3 (~68), and Mercedes GLC (~56–63) in usable capacity.
Small door bins, a shallow center console, and a modest glove box; no standout storage innovations. Reviewers consistently criticize interior storage as a weak point.
Front sport seats are widely praised for supportive bolsters and long-haul comfort, especially the leather sport seats on Ti/Veloce and Sparco carbon-shell seats on Quadrifoglio; rear seat is snug and less comfortable for adults on longer drives.
Sport-oriented tuning gives excellent body control at the expense of low-speed compliance; ride is firm over broken pavement, particularly on 20-inch wheels. Adaptive dampers on higher trims help but do not fully mask the firm baseline.
Some tire and wind noise intrudes at highway speeds; no acoustic glass standard. The turbo four is audible under load. Not egregiously loud, but below the segment leaders (Volvo XC60, Lexus NX, Genesis GV70).
Dual-zone automatic climate, heated front seats and heated steering wheel are standard on Sprint and up; ventilated front seats and heated rear seats are optional or bundled on Ti/Veloce. No four-zone climate; remote pre-conditioning is limited to the Alfa Connect app.
5Cost of OwnershipThe Stelvio's lowest-graded category.0.00F
For 2026 Alfa Romeo consolidated the Stelvio to a single well-equipped configuration with optional packages; base MSRP is $49,995 including destination.
With the lineup collapsed to a single trim, most buyers add the Veloce ($2,025), Convenience ($500), and Premium Interior & Audio ($2,250) packages, bringing typical transaction MSRP near $52,745.
CarEdge projects only about $3,065 over 5 years for scheduled maintenance, but RepairPal pegs Alfa Romeo brand-wide annual maintenance + repair around $1,198/yr (~30% above average); blended figure reflects Alfa's well-documented above-average repair costs once outside the 4-year warranty.
CarEdge projects ~32.9% residual after 5 years — one of the worst depreciation curves in the compact-luxury SUV segment, well below Porsche Macan, Lexus NX, and even class-average European rivals.
Standard Alfa Romeo 4-year / 50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper coverage — matches BMW/Audi/Mercedes but shorter mileage than Genesis (5/60k) and Hyundai/Kia mainstream (5/60k).
Powertrain coverage matches bumper-to-bumper at 4 yr / 50,000 miles — notably short versus Genesis 10/100k, Hyundai/Kia 10/100k, and even the 5/60k typical of most rivals.
No complimentary scheduled maintenance is included. Alfa provides 4 yr / unlimited-mile roadside assistance and a limited connected-services trial via Alfa Connect, but nothing comparable to BMW/Volvo/Jaguar's included first-visit service or Genesis/Volvo multi-year care plans.
$52,745 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (33% retained, or about $17,406) leaves about $35,339 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $41,839 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the Stelvio's weakest categories.0.90F
Stelvio has consistently drawn below-average predicted reliability from Consumer Reports (historically 1-2 out of 5) and lands in the bottom quartile of J.D. Power vehicle dependability data for its class; the 949 generation carries a long-running record of software, electrical, and infotainment complaints that reviewers continue to flag going into 2026.
Alfa Romeo has been a persistent bottom-dweller in Consumer Reports brand reliability rankings and J.D. Power VDS for the last five years, frequently finishing last or second-to-last in the industry.
The current-generation Stelvio has been subject to a series of NHTSA recalls covering software/PCM, brake booster, transmission wiring, and fuel system items — not catastrophic patterns but noticeably above segment norms; a heavy TSB list persists around infotainment and electrical gremlins.
The 2.0L turbo four (280 hp, ZF 8HP70) is a Stellantis global engine with mixed but not catastrophic long-term data; recurring complaints include coolant/oil consumption and turbo-related issues, while the ZF transmission itself is proven. The Quadrifoglio's Ferrari-derived 2.9L twin-turbo V6 is powerful but has a niche, harder-to-service reputation.
The 2024 refresh brought a redesigned dash with a 12.3-inch digital cluster, upgraded switchgear, and better soft-touch coverage that carries into 2026; still, reviewers rate it a step behind class benchmarks like the Mercedes GLC and BMW X3 in perceived material richness for the money.
Assembly consistency has improved with the mid-cycle refresh but reviewers and owners still flag occasional squeaks, rattles, and inconsistent panel gaps; initial-quality reporting places Alfa Romeo below the luxury segment median.
Alfa Romeo runs roughly 150 U.S. dealers (many co-located with Maserati or FCA stores), a fraction of BMW's ~340 or Mercedes-Benz's ~380 footprint, leaving long service drives in much of the country; customer service satisfaction studies also rank Alfa Romeo below the luxury average.
Many Stelvio components (especially electronics, suspension bits, and QV-specific parts) are Italian-sourced and dealer-only, with backorder waits common; RepairPal and independent-shop data show annual repair costs materially above the compact luxury SUV average.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the Stelvio's strongest categories.2.35C+
2026 Stelvio is a carryover of the 2024-refreshed current-gen and retains the 8.8-inch center touchscreen across all trims; small for the compact luxury SUV class where 10–14 inch displays are the norm.
Uconnect 5 is generally snappy with logical menus and retains physical volume/tune knobs plus dashboard shortcut buttons, but the 8.8-inch display feels small and low-resolution against segment leaders; reviewers cite dated graphics as the main knock rather than lag.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are standard across all Stelvio trims via Uconnect 5.
Uconnect 5 includes standard navigation with TomTom mapping and integrated Amazon Alexa voice assistant, which is more capable than legacy button-driven voice, but reviewers still frequently default to phone-projected maps and assistants.
Base 8-speaker system is competent; the available Harman Kardon 14-speaker, 900-watt premium system is well-reviewed and competitive with segment-average premium audio, though it does not reach Burmester/Meridian/B&O reference levels.
Full 12.3-inch reconfigurable digital gauge cluster with multiple layouts (including classic twin-dial and Alfa Romeo Heritage themes) is standard on all trims since the 2024 refresh and carries into 2026 unchanged.
Uconnect 5 supports over-the-air infotainment and map updates via the connected-services subscription, but Stellantis has not extended whole-vehicle software OTA to the Stelvio the way Tesla, Ford, GM and Rivian have.
Alfa Connect (Stellantis-based) app supports remote start, lock/unlock, vehicle location, and vehicle health, but requires a paid connected-services subscription after the trial and does not include a digital key; app polish and reliability trail Hyundai/Kia and premium German rivals.
USB-C ports front and rear plus a 12V outlet; wireless phone charging pad is included on Ti and Veloce trims. No household AC outlet or high-wattage device power.
Passive/proximity entry with push-button start standard on all trims; remote start included via the Alfa Connect app on connected services. Hands-free power liftgate available on upper trims. No phone-as-key.
Rear camera with dynamic gridlines and front/rear parking sensors are standard; 360-degree surround-view camera is available on Ti and Veloce trims. No automated park assist.
Alfa Romeo does not offer a head-up display on any Stelvio trim, a notable omission in the compact luxury SUV class where nearly every German and Japanese rival offers HUD.
8Use-Case FitOne of the Stelvio's strongest categories.2.09C
Compact 5-seat cabin with tight rear legroom (~37 in) and narrow door openings make rear-facing car seats a squeeze; two LATCH sets are present but access is fiddly, and the sport focus trades daily family logistics for driving feel.
Standard AEB, forward collision warning, lane departure warning and blind-spot monitoring are on Sprint, but adaptive cruise, lane centering and rear cross-traffic bundle into the Active Assist package on Ti/Veloce; IIHS has awarded prior model years Top Safety Pick when equipped with headlight upgrades, without matching Volvo/Genesis clean sweeps.
Rear seat is tolerable for kids but tight for adults on long hauls, cargo behind the rear seat (~18.5 cu ft) is below segment average, and there are no rear entertainment or wireless-charging amenities to speak of; ride is firm rather than plush.
Quick steering, snappy 8-speed and light controls make it lively but a touch nervous in stop-and-go; small climate buttons and the aging Uconnect layout add minor daily annoyances that keep it below the Lexus/Volvo effortless benchmark.
EPA 22/28/24 mpg on the 2.0T AWD is mid-pack at best, premium fuel is required, and Alfa Romeo dealer/service density plus parts pricing push per-mile costs well above German mainstream and Japanese luxury rivals.
At ~184 in long on a 111-in wheelbase with a ~38-ft turning circle and good outward vision, the Stelvio is easy to place in tight spots; rear/360-degree cameras and front park sensors ride on higher trims but not the base.
Rated ~3,000 lb towing with 280 hp available and a modest 56.5 cu ft max cargo — enough for a small utility trailer or dirt-bike, but well shy of a BMW X3 (4,400 lb) or Audi Q5 tow rating and cargo volume.
Alfa Romeo consistently sits at or near the bottom of Consumer Reports and J.D. Power reliability rankings, the leather-heavy cabin isn't wash-out friendly, and there's no fleet reputation to lean on for hard-use duty.
Cargo floor tie-downs and a 12V outlet are present, roof rails and a Class II hitch are options, but there's no bed-style onboard power, no factory upfit ecosystem and no washable interior treatments — this is a sport SUV, not a work platform.
The 15.9-gal tank and 28-mpg highway rating deliver ~440 miles between fills and the front seats are supportive on multi-hour drives; a firm ride and modest cabin isolation vs. Lexus/Genesis, plus lane-centering only on higher trims, keep it out of segment-benchmark territory.
Q4 AWD is standard with a rear-biased setup, DNA drive mode selector includes Advanced Efficiency (no dedicated off-road mode), and roughly 8.0 in of ground clearance handles gravel and light snow — but there's no low-range, skid plating or true off-road hardware.
60/40 folding rear, hands-free power liftgate (Ti Convenience), and optional roof rails cover most weekend loads, but 18.5/56.5 cu ft ranks near the bottom of the compact-luxury class and there's no frunk or true underfloor bin.
9Driving ExperienceThe Stelvio's best-graded category.3.36B+
Widely regarded as the most agile compact luxury SUV alongside the Porsche Macan. Shares Giorgio-platform DNA with the Giulia sedan, with near-50/50 weight distribution, torque-vectoring Q4 AWD, and taut body control that keeps it composed on backroads.
One of the quickest steering ratios in the segment (~12:1) yields instant turn-in, though the electric rack is lighter on genuine feedback than Porsche's setup. Still, precision and directness are class-leading.
Brembo-sourced hardware standard across the range delivers strong, fade-resistant stops. Brake-by-wire pedal feel takes some acclimation — grabby initial bite for some — but stopping power is a genuine strength.
The 2.0L turbo-four (280 hp) paired with the ZF 8-speed automatic delivers quick tip-in and sharp downshifts in Dynamic mode. Some minor turbo lag off idle and slightly abrupt stop/start behavior keep it out of Lexus/Mercedes-Benz refinement territory.
The 2.0T is audibly a four-cylinder under hard throttle and lacks the muted refinement of a six. Cruising NVH is acceptable but wind and drivetrain noise are more present than in an Audi Q5 or Lexus NX.
Alfa Romeo publishes a 38.7 ft curb-to-curb turning diameter — tight for the segment thanks to the quick-ratio rack, and helpful in tight parking situations.
Supportive, low-set sport seats and a driver-focused cockpit please enthusiasts. Cost-cutting shows in some plastic switchgear, small door bins, and column-mounted controls that scatter functions — better than average for a driver, weaker than average for daily livability.
The Stelvio is the SUV that enthusiast press consistently recommends when driving character matters most. Sharp reflexes, expressive chassis, and Italian character make it a genuine long-way-home vehicle even in Ti/Veloce trim — the Quadrifoglio raises the ceiling further.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.08C
Sprint base includes 12.3" digital cluster, 8.8" touchscreen with wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, dual-zone climate, and full ADAS (blind-spot, adaptive cruise, lane-keep) at ~$46k — competitive with rivals but not a class-leading loadout; Ti/Veloce add expected luxury items but at price parity with equivalent BMW/Audi/Mercedes trims.
Buyer gets Ferrari-derived engineering and best-in-class handling for the money, but tech, cabin materials, and refinement lag Q5/X3/GLC at similar sticker prices; the unique-driving-experience premium doesn't fully offset content gaps for mainstream shoppers.
Five distinct trims (Sprint, Ti, Veloce, Competizione, Quadrifoglio) spanning ~$46k to ~$90k+ cover mainstream to true performance-flagship buyers; AWD standard for 2026 removes RWD option but simplifies choice.
Sub-5,000 US units annually places Stelvio at the bottom of the compact-luxury-SUV segment, roughly 1/12 the volume of X3/Q5/GLC leaders; market acceptance remains niche despite years on sale.
Alfa Romeo carries strong aspirational cachet with racing heritage and distinctive Italian design that resonates with enthusiasts; broader market perception is dampened by reliability concerns, small dealer network, and uncertainty about the brand's US future.
Slow sales drive consistent, meaningful incentives — cash rebates commonly $3,000-$7,000 plus subvented finance/lease rates, translating to real transaction-price savings for buyers willing to shop an Alfa dealer.
Current Stelvio launched as MY2018 on the Giorgio platform and received a 2024 mid-cycle refresh (headlights, 12.3" digital cluster, minor interior updates); next-generation Stelvio on Stellantis STLA Large has been repeatedly delayed and is not expected before 2027-2028, so the 2026 remains an aging design.
Universally praised for steering feel, chassis balance, and styling — earned MotorTrend SUV of the Year 2018 and C&D 10Best appearances early in the cycle — but current reviews knock aging tech, interior materials at the price, and reliability, leaving it a respected outlier rather than a comparison-test winner in the modern segment.
