The verdict
A mixed-report hot hatch, strong on reliability and held back by efficiency.
The 2024 Civic Type R is widely considered the best-driving front-wheel-drive car you can buy. It pairs 315 hp with one of the finest manual gearboxes on sale, and it still has a hatchback with 24.5 cu ft of cargo space and strong resale value. The trade-offs are real: it costs $45,890, offers only a 6-speed manual and front-wheel drive, returns 24 MPG on premium fuel, and rides firmly with a lot of tire roar. Buy it to enjoy the drive, not to save money or ride in comfort.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.81C-
The 2024 Civic Type R (FL5, second model year of the 2023 generation, a carry-over year) uses the 2.0L turbo K20C1 at 315 hp @ 6,500 rpm; single trim, one powertrain.
310 lb-ft delivered across a broad 2,600–4,000 rpm plateau — strong for a front-drive hot hatch.
Instrumented tests of the FL5 Type R land around 5.0 s to 60 mph despite FWD; the 2024 car is mechanically unchanged from the tested 2023.
The K20C1 is praised for linear boost delivery, minimal lag and an eager top end; some reviewers note synthesized/ducted sound and a slightly muted soundtrack, but delivery itself is benchmark-level for a turbo four.
The 6-speed manual (the only transmission) is widely regarded as one of the best manual gearboxes on sale — short, precise throws with standard rev-matching; lack of an automatic narrows appeal but does not hurt shift quality.
Front-wheel drive only; no AWD offered. A helical limited-slip differential manages traction but does not provide AWD capability.
Single take-it-or-leave-it configuration: one 315-hp turbo gas engine with a 6-speed manual; no automatic, hybrid or lower-output variant within the Type R nameplate.
2Efficiency & RangeThe Civic Type R's lowest-graded category.0.00F
EPA 24 mpg combined for the only 2024 configuration (2.0L turbo, 6-speed manual) — low against the gas-hatchback band, typical for a 315-hp hot hatch.
22 mpg city from a high-output turbo four with no hybrid assist.
28 mpg highway trails efficiency-oriented hatchbacks by a wide margin and sits slightly below hot-hatch rivals such as the GTI.
The 12.4-gallon tank and 24 mpg combined give just under 300 miles of range, below the bottom of the hatchback band.
EPA's annual fuel cost at current reference premium prices is $3,400 — above the worst end of the hatchback band, driven by 24 mpg and a premium-fuel requirement.
Premium unleaded is required, not just recommended, with no flex-fuel or electrified alternative.
3SafetyGrades above the middle of the scale.2.83B-
NHTSA's 5-star overall score for the 2024 Civic Hatchback covers the shared 11th-gen (FL) body; the low-volume Type R was not given a separately published test, so the rating is carried from the hatchback it is built on.
IIHS gave the 2024 Civic 4-door hatchback a Top Safety Pick but explicitly excludes the Type R from the award; the shared structure's results are Good small overlap, Good moderate overlap and only Acceptable in the updated side test, so no award and one Acceptable result.
The Type R is a single trim with the full Honda Sensing suite standard — CMBS AEB, FCW, LKAS, Road Departure Mitigation, ACC, Traffic Sign Recognition, Auto High-Beam — plus Blind Spot Information, Cross Traffic Monitor and Driver Attention Monitor, so nothing is trim-gated.
Same CMBS camera/radar system as the Civic hatchback, whose IIHS pedestrian AEB rating is only Acceptable: it avoided the crossing child at 12 and 25 mph in daylight but only reduced impact speeds in the night crossing-adult test. The Type R itself was not separately tested.
Blind Spot Information and Cross Traffic Monitor are standard on the only trim, broader default coverage than the base Civic hatchback, but both are alert-only with no active steering/brake intervention or safe-exit alert.
LKAS, Lane Departure Warning and Road Departure Mitigation are standard and share the 11th-gen Civic's calibration, which reviewers describe as smooth for a hands-on system; centering assistance works only above highway-ish speeds on the manual car.
Adaptive Cruise Control is standard, but Honda's Type R spec sheet lists plain ACC rather than the 'ACC with Low-Speed Follow' the CVT Civics get — the Type R is 6-speed manual only, so ACC cannot bring the car to a stop or follow in stop-and-go traffic, and there is no Traffic Jam Assist.
No hands-free highway driving system is offered on the Type R or any 2024 Civic; LKAS requires hands on the wheel.
LED headlights with Auto High-Beam are standard; IIHS rated the 2024 Civic hatchback's LED headlights Good on all trims, though the Type R's units are not separately listed.
The 11th-gen Civic's low cowl and slim A-pillars give good forward sightlines, but the large fixed rear wing cuts across the rear-window view and the deeply bolstered front seats hamper shoulder checks; only a multi-angle rearview camera, no surround view.
The Type R seats four, not five — two outboard rear seats with LATCH and no center position, so it can never take more than two child seats; rear-door openings and legroom are the regular Civic hatchback's, which are workable.
4Space & ComfortOne of the Civic Type R's weakest categories.1.68D
The 2024 Type R seats four — its rear bench is shaped into two positions with no middle seatbelt, one fewer than the five-seat Civic Hatchback it is built on.
No moonroof is offered, so the Type R keeps the full 39.3 in of front headroom — near the top of the hatchback band even with the deep sport seats.
42.3 in of front legroom, the same as the Civic Hatchback, is mid-pack for a compact hatchback.
37.1 in of rear headroom sits mid-band for hatchbacks — adequate for average-height adults under the sloping fastback roof.
37.4 in of rear legroom is competitive for a compact hatch and makes the two rear seats genuinely usable by adults, not a token 2+2.
The full 24.5 cu ft Civic Hatchback cargo hold carries over, plus a 60/40 split-fold rear seat — exceptional cargo space for a track-focused hot hatch and well clear of the GR Corolla and Golf R.
Standard Civic storage — a center console with storage compartment, front and rear door bins and a wireless phone charger tray — plus the hatchback's wide, low-lift opening and fold-down rear seat. There are no Type R-specific storage ideas, and the missing middle rear seat removes any center armrest or pass-through, so it rates competitive but unremarkable.
The heavily bolstered sport buckets with suede-effect inserts get consistent praise as supportive on track yet fine on long drives, and the two-place rear bench is shaped for adults. The aggressive side bolsters squeeze larger occupants, and the front seats are manually adjusted only.
Adaptive dampers with a Comfort mode keep it livable, but reviewers agree the ride stays tight even at the softest setting, and the 19-inch wheels on 30-series tires transmit sharp impacts. A fair midpoint for a track-tuned hot hatch, below the standard Civic Hatchback.
Road roar from the wide Pilot Sport 4S summer tires on low-profile 19s is the main daily-driver complaint, and the exhaust and Active Sound Control add more noise at highway speeds. Clearly louder than the Civic Hatchback built on the same body.
Dual-zone automatic climate and rear heater ducts are standard on the single trim, but there are no heated front seats, no heated steering wheel, no ventilated seats, no power seats and no remote start for the manual — sparse comfort equipment for a car near $45k, and behind the Golf R and Integra Type S.
5Cost of OwnershipMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.78C-
The Type R comes in a single 6-speed manual trim. For 2024 its price rose $1,900 over the 2023 launch MSRP of $42,895, which puts it well above the hatchback mid-band.
With only one trim, the base price is also the volume-trim price. The only factory option is premium paint (Boost Blue, Championship White or Sonic Gray, +$455), which barely moves the as-equipped price.
This runs above the base Civic Hatchback (~$4,000) because of the Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, performance brake pads and Brembo rotors, the manual clutch and premium-fuel service intervals. Honda parts pricing still keeps it below European hot hatches. The FL5 is mechanically unchanged from 2024 to 2026, so the cost profile is the same.
The FL5 has exceptional residuals. KBB shows a 2024 Type R down only 16% after two years, and enthusiast demand plus low US volume support a projected 5-year retention in the mid-60s.
This is Honda's standard New Vehicle Limited Warranty, with no extension for the Type R. It trails Hyundai's 5/60k on the Elantra N.
Standard Honda 5/60k powertrain coverage. That matches the GTI and GR Corolla but sits well behind the Elantra N's 10/100k.
As a 2024 model the Type R falls under the original Honda Service Pass, which covers factory-scheduled maintenance (oil changes, tire rotations, inspections) for 2 years/24,000 miles. Honda cut this to 1 yr/12k from MY2025, so the 2024 car gets twice what later years do. Roadside assistance for 3 yr/36k and a HondaLink trial are included. There are no performance-specific perks.
$45,890 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (64% retained, or about $29,370) leaves about $16,520 in depreciation. Add the projected $6,200 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $22,720 in total.
6Reliability & QualityThe Civic Type R's best-graded category.3.35B+
The 2024 Type R is the second model year of the FL5 (2023+) generation, a carry-over year on the 11th-gen Civic platform whose J.D. Power quality rating is strong; J.D. Power publishes no separate Type R rating, and its higher-stress hardware (high-boost K20C1, LSD, adaptive dampers, Brembo brakes) and enthusiast use keep the prediction a notch below the mainstream Civic Hatchback.
Honda remains an upper-tier mainstream brand for dependability, behind Toyota/Lexus and around Mazda/Subaru in Consumer Reports brand rankings, though it has drifted from the very top of J.D. Power VDS in recent years.
NHTSA lists a single recall covering the 2024 Type R — the broad 11th-gen Civic steering-gearbox campaign (worm-gear spring replacement and regrease) — which is safety-relevant but supplier/assembly-driven and not systemic to the engine or gearbox. The 2023-only seat recall (23V229000) does not reach 2024.
The K20C1 2.0L turbo (315 hp in FL5 tune) has been in Type R service since the 2017 FK8 and has a strong durability record when maintained, paired with a proven 6-speed manual with rev-matching; slightly below mainstream Civic drivetrains given its boost levels and frequent track use.
Built on the well-regarded 11th-gen Civic cabin with Type R-specific red suede bucket seats, red carpeting, aluminum shift knob and serialized plaque; reviewers consistently rate the interior among the best in the hot-hatch class.
The FL5 is assembled at Honda's Yorii Plant in Saitama, Japan, and long-term test cars report tight assembly with few rattles or trim complaints.
Honda's US network of roughly 1,000+ dealers makes warranty and routine service widely accessible, but Type R-specific expertise and stocked performance parts vary by store.
Body, chassis and electrical parts are shared with the high-volume Civic and the K20C1 aftermarket is enormous, but Type R-specific brakes, dampers, wheels and interior pieces carry premium pricing and occasional back-orders.
7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.04C
A 9-inch touchscreen with a physical volume knob is standard on the only trim; no larger screen is offered.
The 11th-gen Civic's 9-inch system is quick and logically laid out, with a physical volume knob, shortcut buttons and real HVAC controls, and the Type R adds the LogR performance datalogger. The graphics look dated next to newer systems, but reviewers rate it easy to live with.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and wireless Android Auto are standard on the one and only trim.
The built-in Honda Satellite-Linked Navigation with voice recognition and real-time traffic is standard, unusual in the class, but the command-style voice system is basic, so most owners default to phone projection.
A 12-speaker Bose system with a subwoofer is standard — a strong premium-branded setup for a hot hatch, though road noise from the tires undercuts it at speed.
A 10.2-inch fully digital cluster is standard, with mode-specific layouts including the +R track display (boost, G-forces, shift lights) — one of the richest clusters among hot hatches.
HondaLink connectivity and a Wi-Fi hotspot are fitted, but Honda does not advertise over-the-air updates for vehicle systems on the 2024 Civic. Software fixes are dealer-flashed, and infotainment and map updates are limited.
The HondaLink app provides lock/unlock, vehicle locate and service info, mostly behind a subscription after the trial period. The manual-only Type R cannot use remote engine start or remote climate, and there is no digital key.
The 2024 car has only two 2.5-amp USB ports, both in the front console, plus a front 12V outlet and a standard wireless charger. Rear passengers get no USB port, and there is no household outlet.
Smart Entry with Walk Away Auto Lock and push-button start are standard, but there is no remote engine start (manual-only) and no phone-as-key.
Honda's US spec lists only a multi-angle rearview camera with dynamic guidelines. Cross Traffic Monitor helps when reversing, but no parking sensors or surround-view camera are listed. One review mentions sensors, likely for a non-US spec.
No head-up display is offered on the 2024 Type R; the 10.2-inch cluster carries all driver information.
8Use-Case FitOne of the Civic Type R's weakest categories.1.06D
Only two rear seating positions (no center belt) limit it to two child seats, and the high-bolstered front buckets make installing seats awkward. The full-size rear doors, 37.4 in of rear legroom and the 24.5 cu ft hatch for strollers keep it workable.
The single trim includes full Honda Sensing plus Blind Spot Information, Cross Traffic Monitor and Driver Attention Monitor at no extra cost. However, IIHS explicitly excludes the Type R from the Civic hatchback's Top Safety Pick, and the ~$45k entry price is steep for a family budget.
Four seats, a firm ride, prominent tire roar, no heated seats and no rear USB ports undercut multi-hour family trips. The large 24.5 cu ft cargo hold, rear heater ducts and the Bose stereo are real positives.
The only transmission is a manual, so stop-and-go traffic means working a clutch, though the light clutch, rev-matching and auto brake hold help. The firm ride and road noise add fatigue; good visibility and compact size keep it manageable, but it is more work day to day than a regular Civic.
At 24 MPG combined on required premium fuel, EPA estimates ~$3,400 a year in fuel. The 265/30ZR19 Pilot Sport 4S summer tires are costly and wear quickly, so it is an expensive way to commute despite strong resale.
A compact 180.9 in length and good forward visibility help, but the wide tires produce a 39.9 ft turning circle, the rear wing intrudes into the rear view, and Honda's US spec lists only a rear camera — no parking sensors or 360-degree view.
There is no tow rating, and the low ride height and summer tires are poorly suited to loads. The 24.5 cu ft hatch with a split-fold rear seat carries tools or samples for light trade use, so it scores above zero.
Honda's mechanical reputation helps, but a high-strung 315-hp turbo, a clutch, suede-effect seats and a 4.8 in-high splitter are not built for hard use, and there is no fleet track record.
There is no 120V outlet, no factory hitch and no washable surfaces, only a single front 12V outlet and a cargo light. A wide hatch opening and fold-flat rear seat are its only work-oriented provisions.
Range is under 300 miles from a 12.4-gal tank at 24 MPG combined. Road roar, a firm ride and a manual gearbox limit long-haul ease, though standard adaptive cruise and lane keeping help and the seats hold up over hours.
FWD-only, with 4.8 in of ground clearance, a 10.9° approach angle and summer tires unsuitable for snow or gravel — firmly pavement-bound. The large cargo hold still takes camping gear.
24.5 cu ft behind the rear seats and a 60/40 split fold swallow bulky gear far better than rival hot hatches. There is no factory hitch or roof rails, and the cargo cover and hatch design are the plain Civic's.
9Driving ExperienceOne of the Civic Type R's strongest categories.3.27B+
The FL5 Type R is widely rated the best-handling front-drive car on sale: dual-axis front struts kill torque steer, a helical LSD and adaptive dampers manage corner exits, and 265-width Pilot Sport 4S tires give huge grip. It sits clearly above the GTI, Golf R and GR Corolla.
The quick (11.6:1, 2.1 turns lock to lock) dual-pinion rack is precisely weighted and unusually communicative for electric power steering, with no torque steer — among the best in any front-drive car.
Brembo four-piston front calipers on 13.8-in two-piece rotors give a firm, progressive pedal and resist fade on track, and the sticky tires deliver short stops.
The 315-hp 2.0T delivers flat, near-lag-free torque from 2,600 rpm, and the 6-speed manual with a lightweight flywheel and faster rev-matching is a class benchmark. There is a little softness below 2,000 rpm, and the manual demands more of the driver in traffic.
Active Sound Control and a three-outlet exhaust give an eager note under load, but reviewers note highway drone at cruise in sixth, so it is engaging rather than refined.
The wide 265-section front tires limit steering lock, so the Type R needs 39.9 ft to turn — at the bad end of the hatchback band and well behind the regular Civic Hatchback.
A low seating position, a tilt/telescoping wheel, ideally placed sport pedals and shifter, and physical climate knobs give a near-ideal driving position. The only drawbacks are manual-only seat adjustment and high bolsters that make getting in tricky for bigger drivers.
The enthusiast benchmark of the hot-hatch class — manual-only, very capable and deeply rewarding, and a car critics recommend at any price.
10Value & Market PositionOne of the Civic Type R's strongest categories.3.16B
The single US trim comes fully equipped for a performance car. Standard kit includes adaptive dampers, Brembo front brakes, a helical LSD, 19-inch wheels on Michelin PS4S tires, the 12-speaker Bose system, a 9-inch touchscreen with wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, wireless charging, dual-zone climate, LogR datalogger and Honda Sensing. Paint is the only option.
At $45,890 the Type R delivers 315 hp, a dual-axis front strut, adaptive dampers, Brembos and an LSD, and it beats pricier rivals in instrumented and track testing. It undercuts the Golf R and the same-engined Integra Type S (~$52k). The $1,900 year-over-year rise for 2024, with no added content, trims the margin slightly against the ~$37k GR Corolla Core and ~$35k Elantra N.
It is one trim with one transmission (6-speed manual) and one drivetrain (FWD), with no automatic, no AWD and no US special edition for 2024. Buyers choose a color and dealer accessories and nothing else.
Absolute volume is low because this is a niche enthusiast model, but allocations sold through steadily in 2024 as early-launch markups receded and dealer inventory normalized. Acceptance in its niche is strong, though it is not a mainstream seller.
The red-H Type R badge is one of the most aspirational in the hot-hatch world. It carries decades of motorsport heritage, FL5 Nürburgring/Suzuka FWD lap records and a global cult following, and that halo shows up in its resale values.
Through 2024 the launch-era $5–15k markups faded, and some dealers listed units at MSRP or a little below. Honda ran essentially no factory incentives or subvented financing on the Type R, so buyers could avoid paying over sticker but rarely found real deals.
MY2024 is the second year of the FL5 generation, which launched for 2023 on the 11th-gen Civic platform. It is a carry-over year (price only) with current platform tech and no replacement on the horizon.
It is one of the most decorated hot hatches, named to Car and Driver 10Best for 2023 and 2024 and winning Road & Track PCOTY and MotorTrend PVOTY in 2023. Reviewers treat it as the FWD dynamics benchmark, and it regularly wins comparison tests against the Golf R and GR Corolla.
