The verdict
A mixed-report hot hatch, strong on driving and held back by efficiency.
The 2025 Civic Type R is the best-driving front-wheel-drive car you can buy: 315 hp, a benchmark 6-speed manual and handling that has won nearly every major performance award. It carries over unchanged from 2024 at $47,045, and it keeps an unusually strong ~60% of its value over five years. The tradeoffs are real: 24 MPG on required premium fuel, a firm and noisy ride, only four seats, and no heated seats or automatic option. If you want a thrilling daily driver and can live with those compromises, nothing in the class drives better.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.81C-
2025 is a carry-over year for the FL5 generation (launched for MY2023): the US car keeps the 2.0L turbo K20C1 at 315 hp. The 2025 Euro-market bump to 325 PS-class output did not come to the US.
310 lb-ft across a broad 2,600–4,000 rpm plateau — strong for a front-drive hatchback and unchanged from 2023–2024.
Instrumented testing puts the FL5 at about 5.0 s to 60 mph despite front-wheel drive, helped by the helical LSD; the mechanically identical 2025 car performs the same.
The K20C1 delivers linear, nearly lag-free boost with an eager top end; reviewers rate it among the best turbo fours in the class, docked only for a somewhat synthetic-sounding note and rev hang.
The standard 6-speed manual with rev-match control is a benchmark gearbox — short, precise throws and well-spaced ratios. No automatic is offered, which limits audience but not quality.
Front-wheel drive only on the single trim; the helical limited-slip differential manages traction but no AWD is offered, unlike the GR Corolla and Golf R.
One trim, one engine, one transmission — take it or leave it. No hybrid, automatic or lower-output version within the Type R nameplate.
2Efficiency & RangeThe Civic Type R's lowest-graded category.0.00F
EPA-rated 24 mpg combined for the only configuration (2.0T, 6MT, FWD) — typical for a hot hatch, weak against the efficient compacts in the hatchback band.
22 mpg city from a 315-hp turbo four with no hybrid assist; slightly better than the AWD GR Corolla's 21.
28 mpg highway matches the GR Corolla manual but sits well below mainstream hatchbacks that clear 40.
A small 12.4-gallon tank at 24 mpg combined gives under 300 miles — shorter than the GR Corolla's ~317 and at the bottom of the hatchback band.
EPA's current annual fuel cost estimate for the 2025 Type R is $3,400 — 24 mpg on required premium at the present reference price, beyond the costly end of the hatchback band.
Premium 91-octane is required, not just recommended, so every fill carries the premium spread; no flex-fuel or electrified alternative.
3SafetyOne of the Civic Type R's strongest categories.3.08B
NHTSA does not crash-test the low-volume Type R on its own; it shares the 11th-gen Civic Hatchback body structure, which carries a 5-star Overall Vehicle Score for 2025.
Honda states the 2025 Civic Hatchback's IIHS Top Safety Pick explicitly includes the Civic Type R; the shared body earned Good in small-overlap (driver and passenger), moderate-overlap and side tests. Seat-belt reminder rated Marginal, and the hatchback (unlike the sedan) missed the plus.
The 2025 Type R is a single trim, so the full Honda Sensing suite (CMBS AEB with pedestrian detection, ACC with Low-Speed Follow, LKAS, Road Departure Mitigation, Traffic Sign Recognition, Auto High-Beam) plus Blind Spot Information and Cross Traffic Monitor are all standard.
The shared CMBS system rated only Acceptable in IIHS's tougher vehicle-to-vehicle 2.0 test and Acceptable for pedestrian detection — adequate but not top-tier. The Type R itself was not separately tested.
Blind Spot Information and Cross Traffic Monitor are standard on the Type R, but both are alert-only with no active steering/braking intervention or safe-exit alert.
Honda's LKAS centers the car competently in the 11th-gen Civic with little ping-ponging, though it is hands-on and disengages more readily than the best systems; Road Departure Mitigation is standard.
ACC is standard, but the Type R comes only with a 6-speed manual, so it works at highway speeds without true stop-and-go — the driver has to work the clutch in traffic, which limits it compared with automatic-equipped rivals.
No hands-free driving system is offered on any 2025 Civic, Type R included.
IIHS rates the LED headlights fitted to every 2025 Civic Hatchback trim Good, and Auto High-Beam is standard on the Type R. They are not curve-adaptive.
The low cowl and slim A-pillars of the Civic give a good forward view, but the large rear wing cuts across the rearview mirror and the deep-bolstered seats hamper shoulder checks. There is a rearview camera but no 360-degree view.
Rear seating is limited to two outboard positions in the FL5 Type R, each with LATCH, so two car seats fit but there is no middle seat. The Civic hatchback's rear doors and legroom are reasonable for installation.
4Space & ComfortGrades below the middle of the scale.1.65D
The Type R deletes the Civic hatchback's rear middle seat, so it seats four, not five.
Generous front headroom for the class; no sunroof is offered, so the figure holds for every car.
Front legroom is mid-pack among compact hatchbacks.
Rear headroom is average for a compact hatchback despite the sloping liftback roof.
Rear legroom matches the Civic hatchback and is competitive for the compact class.
Large hatch area for the class, well ahead of the GR Corolla and roughly level with the Golf R.
Storage matches the regular Civic: a decent center console, door pockets and a wireless-charging tray. There is nothing beyond that, and no rear center seat or armrest.
Reviewers praise the deeply bolstered red suede front buckets as supportive over long drives, but they are manual-adjust and unheated, and the rear has only two seats.
The adaptive dampers make the ride surprisingly livable in Comfort mode, but 19-inch wheels on 265/30 tires keep it firm over broken pavement.
Road noise from the ultra-low-profile Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires and engine boom are prominent at highway speed.
Dual-zone automatic climate is standard, but there are no heated or ventilated seats, no heated wheel and no remote climate on a ~$46k car.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the Civic Type R's weakest categories.1.10D
The Type R is sold in one trim with a 6-speed manual, so the entry price is the only price. For 2025 it rose about $800 over 2024 with no hardware changes.
There is only one trim, so the volume-trim price equals the base MSRP. Only dealer accessories change what a buyer pays.
This is well above a regular Civic hatchback. KBB's figure includes Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tire replacement, performance brakes and clutch wear on a manual-only car that tends to be driven hard.
Enthusiast demand and low US volume keep FL5 residuals far above typical hatchbacks. KBB projects only about $18.6k of depreciation over five years.
This is Honda's standard New Vehicle Limited Warranty, with no extension for the Type R. It matches the GTI and GR Corolla but trails Hyundai's Elantra N (5/60k).
This is Honda's standard powertrain coverage on the 315-hp K20C1 turbo four. It is level with Toyota and VW but half of the Elantra N's 10/100k.
For 2025 models, Honda Service Pass covers 1 year / 12,000 miles of scheduled maintenance (oil and filter, tire rotations, inspections). Some 2024 models got 2 years / 24,000 miles. Roadside assistance runs with the 3/36k warranty. That is a short benefit with nothing specific to performance driving.
$47,045 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (60.4% retained, or about $28,415) leaves about $18,630 in depreciation. Add the projected $8,046 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $26,676 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the Civic Type R's strongest categories.3.36B+
Low sales volume means neither Consumer Reports nor J.D. Power publishes a Type R-specific rating for 2025, so the prediction leans on the 11th-gen Civic it shares a platform with. That car rates above average, but the Type R's higher-stress hardware (high-boost K20C1, Brembo brakes, adaptive dampers, helical LSD) and hard-driving owners justify scoring it a notch below the regular Civic Hatchback.
Among mainstream brands Honda sits in the upper tier for multi-year dependability, behind Toyota/Lexus but consistently ahead of the industry average in Consumer Reports brand rankings and J.D. Power VDS.
One NHTSA campaign covers the 2025 Type R: the steering-gearbox recall (24V744000) shared with the whole 2022–2025 Civic/Integra/CR-V family. It applies only to cars built before August 22, 2024, and the dealer fix is a spring replacement plus grease. The only other recall in the FL5 generation is a 640-unit driver-seat-frame weld recall (23V229000) limited to the 2023 model year. Nothing involves the engine or gearbox, although a steering defect is safety-relevant.
The K20C1 2.0L turbo has been in production since the 2017 FK8 Type R and has a strong high-mileage reputation when it is maintained on schedule, and the 6-speed manual is a proven Honda unit. It scores slightly below mainstream Civic drivetrains because it runs high boost and owners often track it, but it stands out among 300+ hp performance engines.
The cabin uses the well-regarded 11th-gen Civic dash and adds Type R-specific red suede-trimmed buckets, red carpet, an aluminum shift knob and a serialized plaque. Reviewers rank it among the best interiors in the hot-hatch class, a step above the standard Civic Hatchback.
The FL5 is assembled at Honda's Yorii plant in Japan, which has a reputation for tight panel gaps and consistent interior alignment. Long-term test cars and owner reports show few rattles or trim issues. The only build-quality recall in this generation was a small 2023 seat-weld batch, and it did not carry into 2025.
Honda's US network of about 1,050 dealers makes warranty and routine service easy to reach. Not every store stocks Type R-specific parts or has technicians experienced with the K20C1 and the track hardware. Honda's service satisfaction runs above the mainstream average.
Body, chassis and most electrical parts are shared with the high-volume Civic, so they are cheap and plentiful. Type R-specific Brembo brakes, LSD, adaptive dampers and interior pieces carry premium prices and occasionally longer lead times. The K20C1 aftermarket is enormous.
7Technology & InfotainmentMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.83C-
A 9-inch screen is small next to rivals' 10–12.9-inch displays.
Honda's 9-inch system is quick and simple, and it keeps a volume knob and physical climate controls. It looks dated next to Google-based systems.
Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard on the sole trim.
Native satellite navigation with voice recognition is standard but basic; most owners will use phone projection.
A 12-speaker Bose system with a subwoofer is standard. Reviewers rate it as solid but not class-leading.
A configurable 10.2-inch digital cluster is standard, with Type R-specific +R mode graphics and a shift indicator. The Honda LogR data logger adds lap and performance telemetry.
There is no published whole-vehicle OTA program. Updates are limited to map and dealer-applied software.
HondaLink offers basic connectivity. Remote engine start and digital key are not offered on the manual-only Type R.
Standard wireless charging and two 2.5A front USB ports. There are no rear-row ports and no AC outlet.
Smart Entry with Walk Away Auto Lock and push-button start are standard. Remote start and phone-as-key are not available.
A multi-angle rearview camera is the only parking aid: no parking sensors and no surround view. The rear wing also obstructs the view out the back.
No head-up display is offered.
8Use-Case FitOne of the Civic Type R's weakest categories.0.83F
Four doors, a wide hatch and two rear LATCH positions help, but with no middle seat it carries only two kids. A low, deeply bolstered car is awkward for daily school runs.
Honda Sensing, blind-spot and cross-traffic alerts are standard. It inherits the Civic hatchback's 5-star NHTSA and IIHS Top Safety Pick credentials, though the Type R itself is not separately tested.
Cargo space is generous, but road noise, the firm ride, the two-seat rear and the lack of rear USB ports or seat heaters limit long family trips.
The light clutch, rev-match and good visibility forward make it tractable, but a mandatory manual in traffic, a firm ride and tire noise add fatigue.
24 MPG combined on premium fuel, plus costly 265/30R19 performance tires, makes it expensive per mile for a compact.
Compact footprint, but a wide 39.9-ft turning circle, no parking sensors and a wing in the rear view make tight parking harder than in a regular Civic.
Honda gives no tow rating, and the low-slung performance setup is not suited to work duty. The hatch suits only light loads.
The Civic platform and K20C1 engine are robust, but the suede interior, aero parts and low ride height suit enthusiast use, not hard work.
No onboard power, roof rails or hitch; there are only basic cargo tie-downs.
Supportive front seats and standard adaptive cruise help, but road noise, the firm ride and about 298 miles of range limit it as a tourer.
Front-wheel drive, low ground clearance and performance summer tires keep it on pavement. There is no tow or roof rating for gear.
The big hatch and 60/40 folding rear seatbacks swallow normal luggage, but it has no roof rails or hitch, and only two rear seats.
9Driving ExperienceThe Civic Type R's best-graded category.3.46B+
Widely judged the best-handling front-drive car on sale, with huge grip, flat body control and no torque steer from the dual-axis struts.
Precise, well-weighted steering with real feedback; the dual-axis front suspension keeps torque steer out of the wheel.
Brembo four-piston front brakes give a firm, consistent pedal and strong fade resistance in track testing.
The 315-hp turbo four has a flat torque curve, sharp throttle response and minimal lag. Rev-match smooths downshifts.
The engine is smooth but sounds flat and droning rather than exciting, and the triple exhaust is muted. Vibration is well isolated.
Wide tires and steering lock limits make the turning circle large for a compact hatchback.
Low, well-placed seat with a telescoping wheel, a perfectly placed shifter and physical climate controls. The rear wing compromises the rearward view.
An enthusiast benchmark: one of the best manuals on sale, a precise chassis and multiple performance-car-of-the-year awards.
10Value & Market PositionGrades above the middle of the scale.3.03B
The single US trim comes fully equipped, with no factory options. It includes adaptive dampers, Brembo front brakes, a helical limited-slip differential, 19-inch wheels on Michelin PS4S tires, Bose audio, a 9-inch touchscreen with wireless CarPlay/Android Auto, wireless charging, dual-zone climate, the LogR datalogger and Honda Sensing.
About $47k buys 315 hp, a dual-axis front strut and benchmark front-drive track pace. That undercuts the Integra Type S, which uses the same engine, and the Golf R, while beating them in most tests. The 2025 price rose $800 with no changes, and the GR Corolla and GTI are cheaper, so it is strong value rather than a bargain.
There is one trim, one transmission (6-speed manual), one drivetrain (FWD) and no option packages. The only choices are paint color and dealer accessories.
US volume is low, a few thousand units a year, but allocations sell through steadily to a dedicated enthusiast base. Acceptance is strong within its niche, but it does not sell in mainstream volume.
The red-badge Type R is one of the most aspirational hot-hatch nameplates, built on decades of history and front-drive lap records. Its pull shows in the resale values.
Launch-era dealer markups had mostly faded by 2025, but the car still usually sells at or near MSRP. Honda offers essentially no factory cash on it, and discounts are rare.
The FL5 generation launched for MY2023, so 2025 is its third year: mid-cycle, carried over unchanged, with no replacement close.
It is a benchmark in the class and has won major awards and most comparison tests against the GR Corolla, GTI and Golf R.
