The verdict
A struggling subcompact suv, strong on ownership and held back by performance.
The 2017 Honda HR-V is a value-and-space play, not a performance one: a $20,200 starting price, 31 MPG combined, and a projected $9,262 in total 5-year ownership costs make it one of the cheapest subcompact SUVs to own, and its 39.3-inch rear legroom and flexible Magic Seat beat segment rivals twice its price. The tradeoff is a sluggish 141-hp engine (~9.5s to 60 mph), a cramped 24.3-cu-ft cargo hold, and essentially no driver-assistance technology — Honda Sensing wasn't offered on any 2017 trim. It's the right car for a budget-conscious commuter who prizes rear-seat room and low running costs over speed or safety tech.
Jump to scoresStrengths

- Strong fuel economy for a gas crossover
- Rear-seat room and cargo flexibility that punch above the price
What holds it back
- Virtually no driver-assistance safety tech
- Slow off the line and strained under load
- Can't tow anything

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe HR-V's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Single engine across the lineup; Honda's own 2017 HR-V Facts Guide confirms the figure for LX/EX/EX-L alike.
Single engine across the lineup, unchanged for 2017 (a carry-over year within the first generation, 2016-2022).
Instrumented tests of the CVT-equipped HR-V (the volume configuration) cluster in the 9.3-9.9s range; AWD models and Consumer Reports' test ran slower still (10.5s), while the lighter 6-speed manual FWD was quicker in Car and Driver's test.
The 1.8L four is adequate around town but consistently described by reviewers as strained and noisy under hard acceleration, with the CVT exaggerating engine drone at full throttle; this is one of the weaker points of the HR-V versus segment rivals.
The CVT (standard on EX/EX-L, optional on LX) shifts smoothly in normal driving with available paddle shifters on EX/EX-L, but amplifies engine noise and feels rubber-bandy under hard acceleration; the 6-speed manual (LX/EX only) is a genuine, well-regarded alternative, unusual for this segment.
Honda did not certify any HR-V for towing prior to the 2023 model year refresh; the owner's manual states the vehicle is not designed to tow a trailer.
Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System is available as a factory option on every 2017 trim (LX, EX, EX-L Navi), but it is a basic reactive on-demand system with no low range, locking modes, or terrain settings.
6.7 in. ground clearance and no off-road hardware, skid plates, or dedicated off-road trim; strictly a pavement-oriented crossover despite optional AWD.
A single 1.8L gas engine across the entire lineup for 2017, with only transmission (6MT/CVT) and drivetrain (FWD/AWD) as variables - no hybrid, turbo, or electrified option.
2Efficiency & RangeOne of the HR-V's strongest categories.2.78B-
FWD with CVT is the volume configuration across LX/EX/EX-L Navi; figure is the EPA-certified combined rating for that config.
EPA city rating for the FWD CVT volume configuration.
EPA highway rating for the FWD CVT volume configuration.
EPA-published total range figure for the FWD CVT configuration, consistent with the 13.2-gallon tank and 31 MPG combined rating.
EPA's published annual fuel cost estimate for the FWD CVT configuration at the standard 15,000 mi/yr, 55/45 city-highway assumption.
Runs on regular unleaded gasoline across the entire lineup; no premium requirement or recommendation on any trim.
3SafetyGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.54F
NHTSA's overall crash-test rating for the first-generation HR-V (2016-2022, which the 2017 model year belongs to) was 5 stars overall.
Mostly Good/Acceptable structural results (moderate overlap front Good, small overlap front Acceptable, roof strength Good, head restraints Good, original-protocol side test Good for units built after March 2017) but no Top Safety Pick/Pick+ award, held back largely by Poor headlights and a Poor result on the later, more stringent updated side-impact test.
Honda Sensing was not introduced to the HR-V until the 2019 model year; the 2017 HR-V offers no forward collision warning, AEB, lane-keeping, blind-spot radar, or adaptive cruise on any trim, including the range-topping EX-L Navi. The only driver-assistance-adjacent feature at any trim is the passive LaneWatch camera (EX and EX-L Navi only).
No AEB system is offered on the 2017 HR-V at any trim; IIHS lists no front crash prevention test result for this model year because the vehicle wasn't fitted with the hardware.
Coverage is limited to Honda LaneWatch, a passive camera feed on the passenger mirror shown only when the right turn signal is engaged - not a radar-based alert system, left-side blind spot monitoring, or rear cross-traffic alert - and it's optional, standard only on EX and EX-L Navi, absent on base LX.
No lane departure warning or lane keeping assist is available on the 2017 HR-V at any trim; this arrived only with the Honda Sensing suite starting MY2019.
No adaptive cruise control is offered on the 2017 HR-V; only a conventional fixed-speed cruise control is available, and there is no highway-assist feature of any kind.
No hands-free driving system exists on this generation of HR-V at any trim or model year in its production run.
IIHS rated the 2017 HR-V's halogen reflector headlights Poor across the tested configuration, citing inadequate visibility on both sides of the road in straightaway tests; no curve-adaptive or automatic high-beam feature was offered on any trim.
Contemporaneous reviews consistently praised the HR-V's sightlines - slim front pillars, large side mirrors, and long side glass that eases lane changes and over-shoulder checks - despite thicker rear roof pillars from the coupe-like rear-door-handle design.
This generation HR-V seats 5 and offers LATCH lower anchors at both outboard rear positions plus top tether anchors at all three rear positions; Cars.com's car-seat check on this generation found easy-access anchors and enough room to fit two child seats without excessive difficulty.
4Space & ComfortOne of the HR-V's weakest categories.0.48F
The HR-V is a strict 5-seat subcompact SUV across its entire 2017 lineup, with no 7-seat option.
The volume EX trim's standard moonroof trims front headroom versus the moonroof-less LX.
Consistent across the 2017 lineup, unchanged from the prior model year.
Honda's Magic Seat packaging preserves rear headroom even with the panoramic greenhouse styling.
A genuine class strength — reviewers consistently cite generous rear-seat legroom for adults despite the HR-V's compact footprint.
The HR-V is a strict two-row subcompact SUV in every 2017 configuration; no third row is offered.
Behind-the-second-row volume sits below the normal SUV normalization floor — the HR-V trades cargo depth for its sloped, coupe-like roofline.
The Magic Seat's flat-fold flexibility helps, but max volume still lands near the bottom of the segment band.
Honda's second-row Magic Seat (fold-flat, tall-mode, and utility-mode configurations carried over from the Fit) is a genuine segment differentiator even though front-cabin console storage is unremarkable.
Owner and reviewer feedback is split: front cushions are frequently described as flat and firm with a driving position that's hard to dial in, while rear seats draw more consistent praise for space and comfort.
Reviewers are mixed — Honda's tuning absorbs most road imperfections and the chassis feels composed, but several note a busier, firmer ride over broken pavement and potholes than segment leaders.
No instrumented noise data found for 2017 specifically; the 1.8L engine drones under load via the CVT and road/wind noise is typical for an unrefined, low-cost subcompact SUV platform of this era.
Heated front seats are available starting at EX, but there's no heated steering wheel, no rear climate vents, and no ventilated seats at any trim — sparse even on the range-topping EX-L w/Navi.
5Cost of OwnershipThe HR-V's best-graded category.3.27B+
Entry LX 2WD manual is the cheapest configuration; well below the subcompact SUV band floor.
EX with CVT is the best-equipped mainstream-volume configuration (heated seats, moonroof, push-button start) without stepping up to EX-L Navi.
CarEdge's 5-year maintenance/repair estimate for the HR-V is well under the segment band, consistent with RepairPal's top-ranked subcompact SUV reliability score for this generation.
Multiple residual-value trackers put HR-V 5-year depreciation at roughly 27-31%, well ahead of the ~38% subcompact-SUV-class average cited by the same sources.
Standard Honda new-vehicle limited warranty for the 2017 model year, at the floor of the mainstream basic-warranty band.
Standard Honda powertrain coverage for 2017, at the floor of the band set by longer Hyundai/Kia-style powertrain warranties.
2017 Honda purchases did not include a complimentary scheduled-maintenance program (Honda Service Pass is a later-era offering) — the only included benefit is the standard 3-year/36,000-mile roadside assistance bundled into the basic warranty, matching most mainstream rivals rather than exceeding them.
$23,050 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (70% retained, or about $16,135) leaves about $6,915 in depreciation. Add the projected $2,347 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $9,262 in total.
6Reliability & QualityOne of the HR-V's strongest categories.2.66C+
Sources disagree for this specific model year: J.D. Power's 2017 Predicted Reliability rating for the HR-V sat at 3/5 (average), while Consumer Reports has rated the nameplate Above Average across most of its first generation on strong long-term owner-survey data. Split signal lands this in the average-to-mid-upper band rather than top-tier.
Honda's own 2017 J.D. Power Vehicle Dependability Study showed a weak showing for the brand — 143 problems per 100 vehicles, well off the Lexus/Porsche-led front of the field (110 PP100) and mid-to-lower pack among the roughly 30 ranked nameplates — even though Honda's multi-year dependability reputation is usually stronger than that single study year suggests.
NHTSA shows zero recalls filed specifically against the 2017 model year HR-V (the campaigns that exist for this generation are concentrated in 2018-2022 build years), consistent with a clean early-production record for this specific year.
The naturally aspirated 1.8L SOHC i-VTEC four is a well-proven Honda engine family with no red flags, but the paired CVT is the generation's known weak point: owners report belt/pulley failures in the 50,000-100,000 mile range with $6,500-$8,000 repair bills, serious enough that American Honda extended CVT warranty coverage on 2016-2020 HR-Vs to 7 years/150,000 miles. That transmission risk pulls an otherwise solid engine down to a mixed-history score.
Reviewers consistently singled out the HR-V's cabin as a step above its Fit platform-mate and class-competitive for the price, with soft-touch panels on the dash, door tops and center console in spots where rivals typically use hard plastic, though some lower-touch surfaces remain firm plastic.
Owner feedback and reviews describe generally solid, consistent assembly ("typical great Honda strength" per owner reports) with no widespread panel-gap or squeak/rattle complaints, though a scattered minority flagged interior material wear and electronics/climate-control glitches.
Honda runs one of the largest, most established dealer networks in the US with broad geographic coverage and generally solid service-satisfaction standing, typical of a high-volume mainstream brand.
RepairPal ranks the HR-V 1st of 7 subcompact SUVs for reliability/ownership cost, with a $301 average annual repair bill versus a $466 segment average and $652 all-vehicle average, reflecting Honda's cheap, widely available parts and large aftermarket.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the HR-V's weakest categories.0.00F
7 inches sits at the very bottom of the SUV normalization band, and the base LX trim doesn't even get a touchscreen.
Honda's first-generation capacitive-touch Display Audio (pre-refresh, no physical volume knob) drew consistent criticism in period reviews for laggy response and a frustrating touch-only volume slider.
Apple CarPlay and Android Auto — wired or wireless — were not offered on any 2017 HR-V trim; Honda confirmed the 2016-2018 HR-V's Display Audio hardware could not be updated to support it, with the feature arriving only on the facelifted 2019 model year.
EX-L w/Navi adds Honda's Satellite-Linked Navigation with basic voice commands, but the system is dated and most owners would bypass it for phone-based navigation if CarPlay/Android Auto were available (it isn't).
No branded premium audio system was offered on any 2017 HR-V trim; speaker counts and output are unremarkable for the segment.
All 2017 HR-V trims use analog gauges with a small monochrome multi-information display; no configurable digital cluster is offered at any trim level.
No over-the-air update capability of any kind — infotainment, maps, or vehicle software — existed on the 2017 HR-V.
HondaLink connected-app functionality on the 2017 HR-V is minimal compared to later model years; remote start was a dealer-installed accessory rather than a factory app-based feature on most trims.
LX gets a single USB port; EX and EX-L w/Navi get two. No USB-C, no wireless charging pad, and no rear-row charging on any trim.
Smart Entry proximity access and push-button start are available starting at EX, but the base LX trim retains a traditional key — no phone-as-key at any trim.
A rearview camera with guidelines is standard across the lineup, and Honda LaneWatch's passenger-side camera is standard on EX and EX-L w/Navi — but there's no front camera, no parking sensors, and no 360-degree view at any trim.
No head-up display was offered on any 2017 HR-V trim.
8Use-Case FitGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.94F
LATCH anchors and the flexible Magic Seat help with car-seat installation and stroller loading, but the HR-V's narrow rear door openings, subcompact footprint, and a Marginal IIHS LATCH-ease rating make daily family logistics more of a squeeze than class leaders.
The 2017 HR-V posts mostly Good IIHS structural scores but an Acceptable small-overlap front rating, a Poor rating on the updated side-impact test, Poor headlights, and Marginal LATCH ease-of-use — and critically, Honda Sensing (automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise, lane keeping) was not offered on any 2017 trim, including the range-topping EX-L w/Navi.
Rear legroom is genuinely generous for the segment, but firm seat cushions, no rear climate vents, no rear USB ports, and modest cargo-behind-seats volume limit multi-hour family trip comfort.
Light, well-weighted steering, a compact footprint, and a high seating position make the HR-V easy to place in traffic, though the CVT's drone under harder throttle inputs detracts from refinement.
28/34 mpg city/highway (FWD CVT) is solid for a gas subcompact SUV of this era, and Honda's reputation for low running costs and strong resale further helps per-mile economics.
A small overall footprint, a 37.4 ft turning diameter, and a standard rearview camera make the HR-V easy to park and thread through tight urban spaces.
Honda does not publish a tow rating for the HR-V and the 141-hp 1.8L/CVT combination has no reserve capacity for towing or hauling heavy loads — this is not a work-capable vehicle.
Honda's general reputation for mechanical durability applies, but the HR-V is a passenger-oriented crossover with no fleet/commercial-use track record or hardened running gear for abusive work duty.
No onboard power outlets, no tie-down provisions, and no upfit ecosystem exist for the HR-V — it has essentially no jobsite-use features.
A roughly 13.2-gallon tank and 34-mpg highway rating yield a usable touring range, but firm seats, no adaptive cruise control (no Honda Sensing on any 2017 trim), and modest sound isolation limit true long-haul comfort.
Honda's Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System is available with the CVT across the lineup (standard on EX-L w/Navi), and roof rails come on the top trim, giving the HR-V light gravel/trail and gear-hauling competence typical of a subcompact crossover, without serious off-road hardware.
The Magic Seat's multiple fold/flip configurations (including tall-mode for upright bulky items) are a genuine practicality advantage, partially offsetting the HR-V's below-average raw cargo volume.
9Driving ExperienceGrades below the middle of the scale.1.57D
Reviewers consistently praised the HR-V's stiffer-than-expected suspension tuning and composed body control through corners for a tall, affordable crossover — a genuine strength relative to segment rivals.
Reviewers called the steering nicely weighted and precise for a subcompact crossover, though it doesn't deliver notable feedback.
No instrumented stopping-distance data specific to the 2017 model was found; pedal feel and stopping power are described as adequate but unremarkable, consistent with the segment norm.
The 141-hp 1.8L engine paired with a CVT produces a notably sluggish ~9.5-second 0-60 time and the flared-rpm 'rubber-band' sensation typical of CVTs under hard acceleration — modest throttle response is a consistent criticism.
The 1.8L engine drones audibly under load as the CVT holds high RPM during acceleration — a common complaint in period reviews of this powertrain.
A mid-pack turning diameter for the subcompact SUV class.
A tall seating position and good outward visibility aid ergonomics, but some reviewers note it's tough to dial in a fully comfortable driving position due to firm, limited-adjustment seats.
The chassis and steering are genuinely engaging for the class, but the modest 141-hp CVT powertrain caps overall driving enjoyment — net result is 'pleasant but unremarkable' rather than a true enthusiast pick.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.40C+
Base LX included a rearview camera, 17-inch alloys, Bluetooth and a 5-inch display audio screen, but lacked items some rivals bundled standard (automatic climate control, heated seats, push-button start all required stepping up to EX), and Honda Sensing driver-assist was not offered on any 2017 HR-V trim.
Reviewers consistently cited the HR-V's class-leading rear legroom and Magic Seat cargo flexibility as unusual value for a sub-$24k crossover, offsetting its unremarkable base equipment and modest 141-hp output.
Three trims (LX, EX, EX-L Navi) each offered with FWD or AWD, plus a 6-speed manual on LX/EX FWD alongside the CVT — a reasonable but not sprawling lineup, and only one engine/powertrain choice across the range.
2017 was a breakout year: HR-V retail sales led the entire subcompact SUV segment starting in April, posted new monthly sales records throughout the year, and finished up 14.3% year-over-year to 93,764 units.
Honda carried (and carries) a strong mainstream reputation for reliability and resale, reinforced that year by KBB's 5-Year Cost to Own award for the HR-V — a meaningful but not aspirational/luxury-tier halo.
Record-setting demand throughout 2017 left little room for discounting beyond modest national offers (College Graduate and Military Appreciation bonuses, limited 0.9% APR on leftover 2016 stock); the hot-selling HR-V itself carried few incentives.
2017 is only the second model year of the first US HR-V generation (launched for MY2016); the next redesign did not arrive until the 2023 model year, so the platform and tech were current with no imminent replacement.
Reviewers praised interior versatility and value but consistently dinged the HR-V for slow acceleration and a fussy touchscreen-only infotainment system; it won KBB's 5-Year Cost to Own award but was not an IIHS Top Safety Pick (that went to the Honda CR-V) and did not collect comparison-test wins against rivals like the Mazda CX-3 or Subaru Crosstrek.
