The verdict

A struggling subcompact suv, strong on efficiency and held back by performance.

The 2020 HR-V trades power and tech for genuinely clever packaging — 58.8 cu ft of max cargo space and rear legroom (39.3 in) that rivals a class-up SUV. But the 141-hp 1.8L/CVT combo is slow and droning, Honda Sensing safety tech doesn't arrive until the EX trim ($24,070), and there's no towing capacity at all (0 lbs). It suits a commuter who needs to haul bulky gear more than people, not a family hauling kids on the highway every day.

Jump to scores

Strengths

  • Class-leading cargo flexibility
  • Strong fuel economy for a gas-only crossover
  • Rear legroom that punches above its class

What holds it back

  • Slow and noisy under the right foot
  • No towing, no real work capability
  • Honda Sensing is locked out of the volume trims

1Performance & PowertrainThe HR-V's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Horsepower
141 hp @ 6,500 rpm
0/100
#4 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Single-engine lineup across all 2020 HR-V trims (LX, Sport, EX, EX-L, Touring) — no powertrain variance.

Torque
127 lb-ft @ 4,300 rpm
0/100
#7 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Same 1.8L engine across the full trim range.

0-60 mph time
10.4s (FWD, instrumented); 10.5s AWD
0/100
#7 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

No manufacturer-quoted 0-60 figure; instrumented test results from reputable outlets corroborate each other closely regardless of drivetrain.

Powertrain refinement25
#9 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers consistently describe the 141-hp 1.8L as underpowered and coarse under load, with the CVT amplifying engine noise rather than masking it.

Transmission behavior27
#9 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The CVT holds high RPM and drones audibly under hard acceleration rather than delivering seamless, quiet ratio changes; multiple outlets describe it as a weak point of the powertrain.

Max towing capacity
Not rated for towing
0/100
#3 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda publishes no towing rating for the HR-V on any trim or drivetrain for 2020; the vehicle is not engineered or equipped for trailering.

AWD/4WD availability60
#4 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda's Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System is available across the entire 2020 trim range (LX through Touring), not gated to top trims, but it is a basic reactive system with no low range, locking modes, or terrain-select hardware.

Off-road capability22
#4 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Modest ground clearance (7.3 in FWD / 6.7 in AWD) and no off-road hardware, skid plates, or dedicated trim — unibody crossover built for pavement with light unpaved-road tolerance only.

Powertrain lineup breadth15
#5 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

A single 1.8L gas engine across every 2020 US trim — no turbo, hybrid, or electrified option, unlike several segment rivals.

2Efficiency & RangeThe HR-V's best-graded category.2.57C+
3SafetyGrades below the middle of the scale.1.22D
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (4★ frontal, 5★ side, 4★ rollover)
100/100
#1 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA tested the 2020 HR-V (carried over from the MY2019 structural update) and awarded the top overall rating despite 4-star component scores in frontal and rollover.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness58
#7 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

IIHS awarded Top Safety Pick, but the badge applies only to trims with optional front crash prevention and better headlights (EX and up) — the Sport/LX volume trims don't qualify. All original crashworthiness tests are Good, but the newer, stricter side-impact test (added for the 2020 model year) scored Poor, a meaningful current-test weak point.

Standard ADAS suite breadth20
#8 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda Sensing (AEB, adaptive cruise, lane-keeping) is not offered at all — not even as an option — on LX or Sport, the two highest-volume 2020 HR-V trims; it only becomes available starting at EX. The volume trim ships with none of the core ADAS suite.

Automatic emergency braking performance70
#3 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

When optioned via Honda Sensing (EX trim and above), IIHS front crash prevention testing rated vehicle-to-vehicle performance Superior, the top tier. Pedestrian AEB performance for this generation is not separately confirmed, and the system is not standard on the volume trim, which keeps this short of a top score.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage18
#9 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

LaneWatch (a passenger-side blind-spot camera, not radar-based monitoring) is standard only from EX up, and radar blind-spot/cross-traffic alert is reserved for EX-L/Touring. The volume LX/Sport trims have no blind-spot or cross-traffic coverage at all.

Lane keeping & centering20
#8 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Lane-keeping assist is bundled only with Honda Sensing on EX trim and above, so it's absent on the volume LX/Sport trims; where fitted, this generation's Honda Sensing lane-keep was period-reviewed as a basic warn-and-nudge system rather than confident centering.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist22
#6 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Adaptive cruise control is part of the Honda Sensing bundle available only from EX trim up; it is absent on the LX/Sport volume trims, and there is no combined highway-assist feature on any 2020 HR-V trim.

Hands-free driving availability0
#8 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

No hands-free highway driving system (BlueCruise/Super Cruise/FSD-equivalent) is offered on any 2020 HR-V trim.

Headlight performance12
#9 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rated the halogen projector headlights without high-beam assist on LX/Sport (the volume trims) Poor — the lowest rating. Even the EX/EX-L headlights only reach Marginal; only Touring's LED units reach Acceptable.

Outward visibility80
#2 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers consistently praise the HR-V's slim front pillars, low dashboard and large glass area for excellent forward/side sightlines and a small blind spot; a standard multi-angle rearview camera helps further, though some 2018–2020 units shipped with a display software bug that could delay the camera image on startup (addressed by a dealer software update).

Child-seat (LATCH) usability65
#3 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rates LATCH ease of use a top grade overall, with two complete, easy-to-use lower-anchor sets in the outboard rear positions, but the lower anchors sit deep in the seat bight and the middle-position tether anchor is difficult to locate, so it's workable rather than effortless, especially for a 3-across install.

4Space & ComfortOne of the HR-V's weakest categories.0.40F
Seating capacity
5 seats
25/100
#1 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Standard five-seat configuration across all 2020 HR-V trims, with a 60/40-split Magic Seat rear bench.

Front headroom
37.6 in (EX/EX-L/Touring); 39.5 in on LX/Sport (no moonroof)
12/100
#9 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

EX and above lose headroom to the standard moonroof; scoring the EX volume trim figure.

Front legroom
41.2 in (all trims)
27/100
#7 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Front legroom is constant across all five 2020 HR-V trims.

Rear headroom

#5 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Rear headroom is unaffected by the moonroof option and is constant across trims.

Rear legroom
39.3 in (all trims)
77/100
#1 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

A genuine subcompact-SUV strength — the HR-V's rear legroom rivals compact SUVs a class up.

Third-row usability5
#3 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The HR-V is a strict two-row subcompact SUV with no third-row option in any trim or model year of this generation.

Cargo/trunk volume
24.3 cu ft (2WD) / 23.2 cu ft (AWD) behind rear seats
0/100
#2 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Behind-rear-seat cargo volume for the FWD EX volume trim; AWD gives up roughly a cubic foot to the rear differential.

Max cargo volume
58.8 cu ft (2WD) / 55.9 cu ft (AWD, EX/EX-L/Touring)
8/100
#1 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Class-leading maximum cargo volume with the Magic Seat rear bench folded flat, 2WD figure for the volume trim.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions74
#1 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The second-row Magic Seat's fold-flat and flip-up (tall) cargo modes are a genuine segment differentiator, letting the HR-V swallow tall items like bikes or plants upright — a feature competitors in this price class don't match.

Seat comfort54
#6 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Front seats are adequately cushioned for daily use but reviewers note flat bottom cushions and limited lower-trim adjustability (manual seats on LX/Sport); rear bench is upright and best for shorter stints given the car's small footprint.

Ride quality42
#7 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers consistently flag a choppy, jarring ride over broken pavement and potholes despite reasonable composure on smooth roads — a known compromise of the HR-V's short wheelbase and firm subcompact-SUV tuning.

Cabin quietness38
#8 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Wind and road noise intrude noticeably at highway speed, and the CVT's high-rpm droning under acceleration compounds the noise complaint — reviewers call out the combination as fatiguing on longer drives.

Climate & comfort features38
#6 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Heated front seats arrive only on EX and above, with no ventilated seats, heated steering wheel, rear climate vents, or remote pre-conditioning offered at any trim — sparse even by subcompact-SUV standards.

5Cost of OwnershipOne of the HR-V's strongest categories.2.54C+
Base MSRP
$20,920 (LX FWD)
100/100
#1 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Entry LX FWD trim price for the 2020 model year, a carry-over year following the 2019 mid-cycle refresh (new grille/headlamps, Sensing standard on EX+, manual dropped). Sits mid-band for a subcompact SUV.

Volume-Trim Price
$24,070 (EX FWD; ~$25,400 as typically equipped with AWD)
100/100
#1 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

EX is the volume trim for the HR-V — it's the first trim with standard Honda Sensing, alloy wheels and upgraded infotainment, making it the typical buyer's pick over the stripped LX.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$7,919 over 5 yrs/75k mi (EX AWD: $5,059 maintenance + $2,860 repairs)
24/100
#8 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda's 1.8L CVT powertrain is mechanically simple with a long reliability track record, but Edmunds' projected 5-year total for the HR-V sits mid-pack for the segment rather than at the cheap end.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~69% of MSRP retained after 5 years
97/100
#1 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda resale is generally strong, but the HR-V's retention lags the brand's own CR-V/Civic and class leaders like the Kia Soul/Subaru Crosstrek, reflecting its dated powertrain and looming 2023 full redesign even back in 2020.

Basic warranty
3 yr / 36,000 mi
0/100
#5 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda's bumper-to-bumper coverage is the segment's common baseline rather than a differentiator — several rivals (Hyundai Kona, Kia Soul) beat it.

Powertrain warranty
5 yr / 60,000 mi
0/100
#5 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

At 5 years/60,000 miles, Honda's powertrain warranty sits at the low end of the industry band — well short of Hyundai/Kia's 10-year/100,000-mile coverage that defines the ceiling for this item.

Complimentary maintenance & perks32
#9 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda had no complimentary scheduled-maintenance program for 2020 models — that (Honda Service Pass) didn't launch until 2023 model year vehicles. The 2020 HR-V's only included perk is 24-hour roadside assistance bundled for the 3-year/36,000-mile warranty term, with no factory-paid oil changes or connected-service trial.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$15,381 (≈$7,462 depreciation + $7,919 maintenance)
89/100
#4 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

$24,070 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (69% retained, or about $16,608) leaves about $7,462 in depreciation. Add the projected $7,919 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $15,381 in total.

6Reliability & QualityOne of the HR-V's strongest categories.2.38C+
Predicted reliability72
#3 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Consumer Reports has rated the first-generation HR-V Above Average for predicted reliability across most of its run, and J.D. Power's vehicle Quality & Reliability score for the 2020 HR-V sits in the high-70s/low-80s — solidly favorable but not top-tier, with the CVT (6.1.4) as the recurring soft spot pulling it off a higher band.

Brand reliability track record62
#6 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda's standing diverged sharply between the two major dependability studies around this period: Consumer Reports placed the brand mid-pack (13th) for 2020, while J.D. Power's U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study showed Honda sliding from 19th (2020) to 28th (2021) among 32 brands — a genuine mid-pack-to-soft reading rather than the top-tier reputation Honda is popularly credited with.

Recall & TSB history58
#7 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA shows four recall campaigns touching the 2020 HR-V (fuel pump failure risk of engine stall, inoperative rearview camera display, seat weight sensor replacement, display-audio software update) — none catastrophic, but the fuel-pump stall campaign is a real safety-relevant recall, and the generation also carries a widely documented CVT shudder TSB pattern addressed by an extended powertrain warranty (see 6.1.4). That combination is above the bottom band but below a clean record.

Powertrain durability reputation48
#7 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The 2020 HR-V's 1.8L four-cylinder is a long-proven Honda engine family, but the CVT paired with it is the model's genuine durability weak point: NHTSA logged 300+ owner complaints of shudder, judder and premature belt wear across 2016-2021 HR-Vs, severe enough that Honda extended the CVT warranty to 7 years/150,000 miles for 2016-2020 model years. That is a known, documented problem component, not just an unproven design.

Interior material quality70
#2 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Period reviews single out the HR-V's cabin as a strength for the price point, praising soft-touch surfaces and perceived quality above segment norms, with only minor knocks (plasticky rear door handles, some hard trim not matching the top trim's sticker price).

Fit & finish68
#5 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

No pattern of rattles, panel-gap complaints, or initial-quality red flags turned up for the 2020 model year in owner or press reviews; assembly is generally described as solid and consistent with Honda's reputation, though not called out as class-leading.

Dealer & service network72
#2 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda runs one of the largest, most geographically dense dealer networks in the US, giving the HR-V broad service access nationwide; J.D. Power's 2020 Customer Service Index did not place Honda among the top mass-market brands that year, so satisfaction is solid rather than standout.

Parts availability & repair cost80
#1 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The HR-V is cheaper to maintain than its own segment average, with abundant parts supply and a deep aftermarket given Honda's shared-platform parts bin (engine and many components common with the Fit/Civic family).

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the HR-V's weakest categories.0.00F
Touchscreen size
7 in touchscreen (Sport and above); 5 in non-touch display on LX
0/100
#4 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The volume EX trim carries Honda's 7-inch Display Audio touchscreen; the base LX uses a smaller 5-inch non-touch display with physical knob.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness40
#9 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda's Display Audio of this generation runs on dated, low-resolution hardware (WVGA 800x480) and period reviews describe it as laggy with a confusing volume-control touch-slider that was widely criticized across Honda's lineup.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto32
#7 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are wired-only and limited to Sport trim and above — the base LX has no smartphone projection at all, and no 2020 HR-V trim offers wireless connectivity.

Voice control & native navigation35
#7 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Built-in navigation is limited to the top Touring trim only, and the basic voice-command system on lower trims is widely bypassed by owners in favor of phone-based Siri/Google Assistant through CarPlay/Android Auto.

Audio system quality40
#9 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

A single 180-watt, 6-speaker system covers every 2020 HR-V trim including the top Touring — adequate for the price point but no premium or branded audio upgrade exists at any level.

Digital instrument cluster18
#9 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The 2020 HR-V uses analog gauges with a small monochrome/color Multi-Information Display insert; a configurable full-digital cluster did not arrive on the nameplate until the redesigned MY2023 model.

OTA update capability8
#9 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The 2020 HR-V's Display Audio platform has no over-the-air update mechanism for maps, software, or vehicle systems; any fixes require a dealer visit (as later recall-driven display-audio software updates confirm).

Companion app & remote functions35
#8 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

HondaLink offers basic remote lock/unlock, vehicle locate and maintenance alerts, but full remote start requires enrolling in a paid HondaLink Remote subscription — a barebones free tier with the core convenience feature gated.

Charging ports & device power28
#9 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The HR-V offers only a modest count of legacy USB-A ports (no USB-C) and no wireless charging pad at any trim, behind contemporary segment norms even for 2020.

Keyless & remote access48
#8 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Proximity key entry and push-button start arrive on EX and above, while the base LX and Sport still use a traditional key — keyless convenience is mid-pack and trim-gated rather than broadly standard.

Camera & parking aids35
#8 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

A standard rearview camera is the extent of parking assistance across the lineup; no front/rear parking sensors or 360-degree camera system is offered on any 2020 HR-V trim.

Head-up display availability5
#6 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

No head-up display is offered on any 2020 HR-V trim, including the range-topping Touring.

8Use-Case FitGrades near the bottom of the scale.0.92F
Kid & car-seat practicality45
#7 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

LATCH anchors and a 60/40 Magic Seat are standard, but rear doors and the second-row opening are narrow for a subcompact SUV, making car-seat installation and daily loading more of a squeeze than in a compact-class rival.

Family safety package52
#7 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda Sensing (adaptive cruise, forward collision warning, collision mitigation braking, lane-keeping, road-departure mitigation) is standard on EX and above but absent on the more affordable LX and Sport trims, so families buying at the lowest price points miss the full ADAS suite; NHTSA gave the 2020 HR-V an overall 5-star rating, while IIHS testing flagged a 'Poor' result in the updated side-impact test.

Family road-trip comfort42
#5 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Rear legroom is genuinely generous for the class, but the small overall footprint, firm choppy ride, loud cabin, and thin rear-seat amenities (no rear vents, no rear USB on lower trims) limit comfort over multi-hour family trips.

Daily driving ease58
#7 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Light steering, a tight turning circle, and a high, SUV-like seating position make the HR-V easy to place in traffic and parking lots, but the underpowered 1.8L/CVT combination is strained during highway merges, adding fatigue on longer commutes.

Commuting cost efficiency64
#5 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

EPA-rated 28/34/30 mpg city/highway/combined (FWD) is solidly efficient for the class, backed by Honda's low RepairPal maintenance cost average — a genuinely cheap vehicle to commute in even though it trails hybrid competitors.

Parking & maneuverability66
#7 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

A compact footprint and a 37.4 ft curb-to-curb turning diameter (most trims) make the HR-V easy to thread through city streets and parking garages, though the lack of front/rear parking sensors on any trim leaves tight-space judgment to the driver and the standard rearview camera alone.

Work capability12
#5 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda does not publish a towing rating for the HR-V and explicitly does not recommend towing with it; with no payload rating, bed, or meaningful load capacity beyond a 24.3 cu ft cargo hold, it has essentially no work fitness.

Durability for work duty38
#7 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The proven 1.8L engine has a solid long-term reputation, but the CVT's documented shudder issues (see cat6 6.1.4) and the HR-V's consumer/lifestyle orientation rather than fleet-grade construction make it a poor candidate for hard work use.

Jobsite & upfit practicality14
#8 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

No onboard power outlets beyond a 12V/USB for electronics, no tie-down points marketed for cargo, and no upfit or accessory ecosystem aimed at trade use — the HR-V is not positioned or equipped for jobsite duty.

Long-distance comfort & range44
#7 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

A 13.2-gallon tank and 30 mpg combined gives roughly 390-400 miles of range, respectable for the class, but adaptive cruise control and the rest of Honda Sensing are absent on LX/Sport, and the firm ride/loud cabin reduce highway endurance comfort.

Outdoor & adventure capability36
#6 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda's Real Time AWD is available on every trim (standard on Touring) which helps on gravel and light snow, but 5.4 inches of ground clearance and no off-road-oriented hardware limit it to pavement-plus-light-dirt duty rather than genuine adventure use.

Gear & luggage flexibility64
#1 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The Magic Seat's flip-up second-row mode and 58.8 cu ft of max cargo volume (class-leading when the generation launched) let the HR-V swallow bulky or tall gear that rivals of its size cannot, even without roof rails standard on every trim.

9Driving ExperienceGrades below the middle of the scale.1.43D
Handling & agility65
#3 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers consistently single out the HR-V's handling as a genuine strength for a subcompact SUV, with minimal body roll, good balance, and a surprisingly composed, engaging feel through corners that outpunches its segment.

Steering feel58
#2 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Steering is described as tight and well-weighted with good precision for the class, though like most electric power-steering setups of this era it offers little genuine road feedback.

Braking confidence52
#7 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

No major braking complaints or instrumented stopping-distance outliers surfaced for the 2020 HR-V; pedal feel and stopping power are described as adequate but unremarkable, consistent with a conventional disc/drum setup at this price point.

Powertrain smoothness & response36
#9 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The 141-hp 1.8L/CVT pairing is widely criticized for weak, delayed response — reviewers describe the HR-V as slow even with the accelerator floored, with the CVT holding high RPM to extract what power is available.

Drivetrain noise & vibration32
#9 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The CVT's characteristic high-rpm drone under acceleration is called out directly by reviewers as a persistent, intrusive noise, compounding the cabin's already notable road and wind noise.

Turning circle
37.4 ft (LX/EX/EX-L/Touring); 38.7 ft (Sport)
58/100
#9 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Curb-to-curb turning diameter for the volume EX trim; Sport's larger wheels slightly widen its turning circle.

Driving position & ergonomics58
#7 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

An elevated, SUV-style seating position gives good outward visibility and easy entry/exit, with controls laid out simply; the main ergonomic knock is the touch-based volume slider on the Display Audio screen shared across Honda's lineup at the time.

Fun-to-drive factor50
#4 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The chassis and steering give the HR-V more personality through corners than most subcompact SUVs, but the slow, droning powertrain undercuts the fun, leaving an overall pleasant-but-not-exciting character rather than a genuine enthusiast pick.

10Value & Market PositionGrades below the middle of the scale.1.20D
Standard equipment generosity46
#8 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Base LX gets a 7-inch touchscreen, rearview camera and 17-inch wheels, but Honda Sensing (automatic emergency braking, lane-keep, adaptive cruise) isn't standard until the EX trim — a meaningful gap versus rivals like the Kia Soul and Hyundai Kona/Venue that push driver-assist features lower in their lineups by 2020.

Feature value per dollar50
#8 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The HR-V trades on class-leading cargo flexibility (Honda's Magic Seat) and strong real-world fuel economy, but reviewers consistently dinged the underpowered, noisy 1.8L/CVT powertrain and aging infotainment — a wash against the asking price rather than a standout bargain.

Trim & configuration breadth65
#3 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Five trims (LX, Sport, EX, EX-L, Touring) spanning roughly $20.9K–$29K, each available in FWD or AWD except Touring (AWD-only) — a well-spaced range from value-focused to loaded, if not quite as broad as some rivals' option sheets.

Sales popularity & market acceptance42
#8 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

HR-V sales fell 15.2% year-over-year to 84,027 units in 2020, and the model ranked only #5 among affordable subcompact SUVs — a mid-pack, declining seller rather than a segment leader.

Brand desirability & image68
#3 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda carries a strong mainstream reputation for reliability and durability that supports resale and buyer confidence, even though the HR-V itself isn't an aspirational nameplate within the lineup.

Deals & incentive availability42
#8 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda historically runs leaner incentives than domestic rivals, and demand stayed relatively firm for the HR-V through 2020 despite the sales decline — buyers could expect modest financing offers but little deep discounting.

Model freshness42
#8 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

2020 is a carry-over year four years into the second generation (launched 2016, refreshed for 2019) with the next full redesign still roughly three model years out — current and recently updated, but not new.

Critical reception & awards38
#8 of 9 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers were lukewarm: Consumer Reports flagged a jarring ride, loud cabin and underpowered acceleration (10.5s 0-60 AWD); Edmunds landed at a middling 7.6/10. No major comparison-test wins or NACTOY/10Best recognition found for this generation.
