The verdict
A struggling subcompact suv, strong on reliability and held back by performance.
The 2024 HR-V is a sensible, low-cost subcompact SUV. It earned a five-star NHTSA rating and an IIHS Top Safety Pick+, it has one of the roomiest back seats in the class, and it costs about $18,100 to own over five years. In exchange you get one of the slowest SUVs on sale (158 hp, roughly 9.5 seconds to 60 mph), a small 24.4 cu ft cargo hold, a 7-inch screen on most trims and Honda's minimum warranty. Buy it for safety, reliability and resale value. Don't buy it if you want power, cargo space or a hybrid.

Detailed scoring by subject
1Performance & PowertrainThe HR-V's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Every 2024 HR-V trim (LX, Sport, EX-L) uses the same 2.0L DOHC i-VTEC inline-4. 2024 is the second year of the third generation that launched for 2023, a carry-over year with no optional engine.
Peak torque is 138 lb-ft at a high 4,200 rpm on all trims, near the bottom of the SUV band.
Instrumented tests of the 2023–2024 2.0L/CVT land between 9.4 and 9.6 s, and Consumer Reports' AWD car took 11.1 s. That makes it one of the slowest SUVs on sale.
It is smooth and quiet at light throttle, helped by standard Active Noise Cancellation. When merging or climbing, the 2.0L turns coarse and strained, as reviewers consistently note.
The CVT is well-mannered around town and uses stepped 'shift' logic under heavier throttle. It still drones and holds high revs under hard acceleration, and no trim has paddle shifters.
Honda publishes no US towing capacity for the 2024 HR-V, and the owner's manual says the vehicle is not designed to tow a trailer. Dealer blogs quote 1,000–1,500 lbs for AWD with a tow-prep accessory, but those figures contradict each other and none is a Honda rating.
Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System is optional on every trim, with FWD standard. It is a reactive on-demand system with no terrain modes or torque vectoring.
Ground clearance is 7.0–7.3 in and the approach angle a shallow 15.5–16.0°. There are no skid plates, lockers, terrain modes or off-road trim, so this is a pavement-oriented crossover.
One 2.0L gas engine and CVT across all three trims; the only choice is FWD or AWD. There is no hybrid, unlike the Corolla Cross Hybrid, Kona Hybrid or Niro.
2Efficiency & RangeMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.05C
EPA rates the FWD volume configuration at 28 MPG combined and AWD at 27, respectable for a gas-only subcompact SUV.
EPA rates the FWD configuration at 26 MPG city.
EPA rates the FWD configuration at 32 MPG highway, mid-pack for a gas subcompact SUV.
The small 14.0-gallon tank at 28 MPG combined gives the FWD volume trim about 392 miles, below the midpoint of the SUV band.
EPA estimates $2,400 a year for the FWD HR-V at 15,000 miles a year on regular gasoline.
It runs on regular unleaded, with no premium requirement and no charging to manage.
3SafetyOne of the HR-V's strongest categories.2.83B-
NHTSA gives the 2024 HR-V five stars overall in both FWD and AWD form. Frontal and side results are five stars each, and rollover is four stars.
The 2024 HR-V earned a Top Safety Pick+ under the stricter 2024 criteria, with Good ratings in every crash test. That includes the updated moderate overlap test with a rear-seat dummy. Headlights rated only Acceptable, which keeps it out of the very top band.
Every trim gets Honda Sensing as standard: AEB, adaptive cruise with Low-Speed Follow, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, road departure mitigation and auto high beams. For 2024, blind-spot and cross-traffic monitoring are only listed as 'Available' on Sport and EX-L and cannot be had on the LX. Parking sensors and Low-Speed Braking Control are EX-L only.
IIHS rates the standard pedestrian AEB (Collision Mitigation Braking System) Good. The 2024 listing has no updated vehicle-to-vehicle rating, so the overall score rests on the pedestrian result. The later 2025 car rated only Acceptable on the tougher vehicle-to-vehicle 2.0 test, and that caps this score.
Blind Spot Information and Cross Traffic Monitor are available on Sport and EX-L but cannot be had on the entry LX. Both systems only alert the driver, with no active steering or braking intervention and no safe-exit warning. Honda made them standard on Sport and EX-L only for 2025.
Lane Keeping Assist, Lane Departure Warning and Road Departure Mitigation are standard on every trim. Reviewers find the centering usable on well-marked highways, but it can wander or drop out on faded lines.
Adaptive cruise with Low-Speed Follow is standard on every trim and handles stop-and-go traffic. Paired with lane keeping it gives basic highway assist, but it lacks a traffic-jam assist feature, and reviewers call it competent rather than class-leading.
No 2024 HR-V trim offers hands-free highway driving. That matches its subcompact SUV peers.
Every trim uses the same LED reflector headlights with standard auto high beams, and IIHS rates them Acceptable. That is consistent across the range but short of the Good ratings many subcompact rivals earn.
The Civic-based body has a low beltline, slim A-pillars and large side glass, which give good forward and side sightlines. The rear quarters are thicker, and the only camera aid is a multi-angle rear camera; no trim offers a 360-degree view.
IIHS rates LATCH ease of use Acceptable. There are lower anchors in the two outboard rear seats and top tethers in all three rear positions. The rear doors are wide and legroom is generous for the class, but fitting three seats across is a squeeze.
4Space & ComfortOne of the HR-V's weakest categories.0.67F
Two-row, five-passenger subcompact SUV on every 2024 trim.
Volume LX/Sport trims without moonroof get 39.4 in; the moonroof-equipped EX-L drops to 38.4 in.
Front legroom is mid-pack for the class.
Rear headroom is competitive for a subcompact SUV.
37.7 in of rear legroom is among the best in the subcompact class, a dividend of the Civic-based 104.5-in wheelbase.
Two-row vehicle with no third row offered — token score per the framework.
24.4 cu ft behind the rear seat is below rivals like the Kona, Trailblazer and Kicks and under the framework's SUV floor.
55.1 cu ft maximum sits at the SUV band floor; this generation dropped the prior HR-V's Magic Seat.
Conventional console, decent door pockets and an open tray beneath the floating center stack — competent everyday storage but nothing clever; the previous generation's Magic Seat flexibility is gone.
Front seats are well shaped and supportive; cloth on LX/Sport with manual height adjust, 8-way power driver seat only on EX-L. Rear bench is roomy but flat.
Civic-derived multi-link rear suspension gives one of the more composed, compliant rides in the subcompact SUV class.
Road and wind noise are average, but the 2.0L/CVT drones loudly under acceleration and on highway grades.
Single-zone automatic climate on LX/Sport, heated front seats from Sport, dual-zone climate only on EX-L; no ventilated seats or rear vents on any trim.
5Cost of OwnershipOne of the HR-V's strongest categories.2.49C+
The 2024 LX FWD starts at $24,600 MSRP plus $1,350 destination. That is among the lowest entry prices in the subcompact SUV class.
The Sport is the volume trim and AWD is the common configuration, at $27,650 MSRP plus $1,350 destination. The six-configuration range runs from $25,950 (LX FWD) to $31,000 (EX-L AWD).
The naturally aspirated 2.0L and CVT are inexpensive to service. KBB projects $3,081 in maintenance plus $1,708 in repairs over 5 years, while CarEdge's estimate is lower. About $4,500 is used, weighted toward KBB.
KBB projects a $13,453 residual against $12,542 of depreciation on the base trim, about 52% of its price retained after 5 years. About 53% is used for the volume Sport. That is solid for the segment but behind the CR-V.
Honda gives the industry-minimum 3-year/36,000-mile limited warranty, well behind Hyundai, Kia and Mitsubishi.
The 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain coverage is the segment floor, against 10 years/100,000 miles from Hyundai and Kia.
For 2023–24 models, Honda Service Pass includes complimentary oil and filter changes, tire rotations and multipoint inspections for 2 years/24,000 miles, about on par with ToyotaCare. Roadside assistance runs for the 3-year/36k warranty period, and HondaLink offers a connected-services trial.
$29,000 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (53% retained, or about $15,370) leaves about $13,630 in depreciation. Add the projected $4,500 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $18,130 in total.
6Reliability & QualityThe HR-V's best-graded category.3.04B
2024 is the second year of the third-generation (2023–) HR-V and a carry-over year; Consumer Reports rates the 2024 HR-V as more reliable than other cars from the same model year. Held below the top band because the generation has only two years of survey data and owner complaints cluster on steering.
Honda sits in the upper part of the mainstream pack in Consumer Reports brand rankings and above industry average in J.D. Power VDS, though it has slipped from the very top tier in recent years amid recall-heavy cycles (fuel pumps, steering gearboxes).
Four NHTSA campaigns touch the 2024 HR-V. The significant one is the steering-gearbox recall (24V744000, 1.69M Honda/Acura vehicles) for a worm-wheel defect that can increase steering effort — consistent with steering being the top owner-complaint area. The others are a seat-belt pretensioner rivet omission (23V782000) and two tiny driver-seat fastener campaigns (24V859000, 26V054000). Typical-to-elevated activity, one safety-system issue but no powertrain or fire recall.
The 2024 HR-V uses the naturally aspirated 2.0L four-cylinder with a CVT shared with the Civic — a simple, proven combination with no oil-dilution issues like the 1.5T and no powertrain recalls for this generation. CVT longevity is the one long-term question mark.
The cabin borrows the Civic's design, honeycomb vent strip and solid switchgear, and reviewers rate it as a step up for the subcompact class; hard plastics remain in lower dash and door panels, as expected at this price.
Reviewers describe solid, consistent assembly, but two assembly-process recalls this year (missing seat-belt pretensioner rivets, under-torqued driver-seat cushion frames) and owner complaints about seat controls and windows point to scattered build lapses.
Honda has one of the densest US dealer networks (about 1,000 franchised Honda dealers), with good rural coverage; service satisfaction is around or slightly above industry average.
Shared Civic mechanicals and Honda's huge parts and aftermarket supply keep parts cheap and easy to find; estimated annual repair costs are below the segment average.
7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the HR-V's weakest categories.0.84F
Volume LX/Sport trims get a small 7-inch touchscreen; the 9-inch unit is EX-L only.
Simple and easy to use with a physical volume knob and shortcut buttons, but the 7-inch screen on volume trims is small with dated graphics.
Wired Apple CarPlay/Android Auto standard; wireless projection reserved for the EX-L's 9-inch unit.
No factory navigation on any 2024 trim; voice control limited to basic commands and phone-projection assistants.
180-watt system with 4 (LX), 6 (Sport) or 8 (EX-L) speakers; no premium branded audio offered.
All trims use an analog speedometer beside a 7-inch TFT driver information display; no full-digital cluster.
Infotainment can receive limited software updates; no whole-vehicle OTA feature updates.
HondaLink offers remote lock/unlock, remote start and vehicle locate on connected trims, but core remote functions sit behind a paid subscription after the trial; no digital key.
Three USB ports on LX; wireless charging pad only on EX-L; no 120V outlet.
Push-button start is standard; Smart Entry with Walk Away Auto Lock and fob remote start arrive on Sport and EX-L. No hands-free or power liftgate, no phone-as-key.
Multi-angle rearview camera standard; no 360-degree camera offered on any trim.
No head-up display offered on any 2024 HR-V trim.
8Use-Case FitMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.77C-
Wide rear door openings and 37.7 in of rear legroom make car-seat installs easy, but 24.4 cu ft of cargo limits stroller-plus-groceries duty.
Honda Sensing (AEB with pedestrian detection, adaptive cruise, lane keeping) is standard on every trim, but crash ratings trail the best in class (NHTSA 4-star overall).
Roomy rear seat and composed ride help, but no rear vents, thin rear amenities, engine drone and modest cargo space limit long family trips.
Excellent visibility, a compliant ride and smooth CVT at low speed make it easy around town; adaptive cruise with low-speed follow is standard.
26/32/28 MPG (FWD) on regular fuel is mid-pack for the segment; cheap Honda parts and simple NA powertrain keep consumables affordable.
Compact footprint, a tight 35.1 ft turning circle and great sightlines make city parking easy, though there's no 360 camera.
No published US tow rating and only 55.1 cu ft of max cargo with a 158-hp engine — not a work vehicle.
Honda's 2.0L NA engine and CVT have a solid durability reputation, but nothing about the HR-V is built for hard work duty.
Cargo tie-downs and dealer-accessory hitch/roof crossbars only; no 120V outlet or work features.
14.0-gal tank × 28 MPG gives ~390 miles; good ride and standard adaptive cruise help, but engine drone and modest power wear on long highway stints.
Real Time AWD is available and 7.0 in of ground clearance handles gravel roads, but there is no off-road trim, terrain modes or factory roof rails.
60/40 split rear seats fold nearly flat, but 55.1 cu ft max is small and the Magic Seat of the previous generation is gone.
9Driving ExperienceMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.17C
Civic-based platform with multi-link rear suspension and Agile Handling Assist delivers tidy, secure cornering, though less sharp than a Mazda CX-30.
Precise but slow and light with little feedback.
Progressive pedal and competitive stopping distances for the class.
158-hp 2.0L and CVT are smooth off the line but slow to respond with weak passing power; 0–60 mph around 9.4–9.8 s.
The engine gets buzzy and the CVT drones under hard acceleration; quiet enough when cruising.
35.1 ft is tight for an SUV, making U-turns and parking easy.
Slim A-pillars and a low cowl give excellent outward visibility and controls are logically laid out; power driver seat only on EX-L.
Competent chassis but the sluggish CVT powertrain makes it a pleasant appliance rather than fun.
10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.40C+
The standard Honda Sensing suite includes adaptive cruise, lane-keep assist and automatic emergency braking. The volume Sport adds heated front seats, smart entry, remote start, 18-inch wheels and 180-W audio. But blind-spot monitoring was not standard on the 2024 LX (it became standard for 2025), and lower trims keep a 7-inch screen with wired-only CarPlay/Android Auto.
At $25,950 to $31,000 with destination, the HR-V offers a roomy cabin, top-tier crash safety and Honda's resale value at a fair price. The slow 158-hp 2.0L/CVT and the lack of a hybrid keep it from being a class bargain next to the Seltos, Trax and Corolla Cross Hybrid.
There are three trims (LX, Sport, EX-L), each offered as FWD or AWD, and only one powertrain (2.0L + CVT). There is no hybrid, turbo or off-road variant.
The HR-V set a nameplate record of 151,468 US sales in calendar 2024, up from 122,206 in 2023. That makes it one of the top-selling subcompact SUVs, and Honda calls it America's top SUV with first-time and Gen Z buyers.
Honda's mainstream reputation for reliability and resale value is a clear positive for subcompact SUV shoppers, supporting residuals against Chevrolet, Nissan and Mitsubishi rivals. The brand is not aspirational.
With supply recovered in 2024, Honda supported the HR-V with promotional APR and lease specials through Honda Financial Services. Cash rebates were small, so room to negotiate stayed modest.
This generation launched for MY2023 on Civic-based underpinnings, so 2024 is its second model year and essentially a carry-over. The platform is current, though infotainment on volume trims is already dated, and the refresh did not arrive until MY2026.
The 2024 HR-V earned an IIHS 2024 Top Safety Pick+ under the tougher 2024 criteria. Reviewers praise its ride, roomy and quiet cabin and cargo space but consistently criticize the slow powertrain, so it typically lands mid-pack in subcompact SUV comparisons.
