The verdict

A struggling subcompact suv, strong on ownership and held back by performance.

The 2019 HR-V is a cheap-to-own subcompact SUV that trades driving enjoyment and modern tech for a strong case on the balance sheet: a $21,515 starting price, a projected $9,514 total 5-year ownership cost, and class-leading rear legroom (39.3 in) thanks to Honda's flip-up Magic Seat. The tradeoff is a slow 141-hp engine (10.2s to 60 mph), no towing capacity, a cramped cargo hold (24.3 cu ft), and a tech suite — 7-in screen, wired-only CarPlay, analog gauges, no HUD — that already felt behind in 2019. It's the right call for a commuter who wants low bills and flexible cargo space, not for anyone cross-shopping on power, cabin tech, or outright cargo volume.

Detailed scoring by subject

1Performance & PowertrainThe HR-V's lowest-graded category.0.00F
Horsepower
141 hp @ 6,500 rpm
0/100
#3 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Single 1.8L i-VTEC engine across the entire 2019 HR-V lineup (LX through Touring); no higher-output trim or turbo option exists for this model year.

Torque
127 lb-ft @ 4,300 rpm
0/100
#6 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Same 1.8L engine across all trims; torque peak is low in the segment and arrives relatively high in the rev range.

0–60 mph time
~10.2 s (instrumented, AWD Touring; FWD volume trim comparable given shared powertrain)
0/100
#5 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

No FWD-specific instrumented test located for MY2019; the tested Touring shares the identical 141-hp/CVT powertrain with the FWD volume trim, with FWD likely very marginally quicker due to lower curb weight.

Powertrain refinement48
#4 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The 1.8L four is adequate for in-town driving but is widely described by reviewers as strained and noisy under hard acceleration or highway passing, with little low-end torque to mask it.

Transmission behavior55
#3 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The revised CVT (new for the 2019 refresh) adds stepped, simulated ratios under heavy throttle to cut the classic CVT drone, and Sport-trim-and-up paddle shifters give manual control, but reviewers still note rubber-band throttle response and hunting under hard acceleration.

Max towing capacity
Not rated for towing
0/100
#3 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda does not certify the 2019 HR-V to tow a trailer in any configuration; the owner's manual for this generation states the vehicle is not designed for towing.

AWD/4WD availability55
#5 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Real Time AWD with Intelligent Control System is available as an option on LX through EX-L and standard on Touring, but it is a basic reactive front-biased system with no low-range, locking diff, or selectable terrain modes.

Off-road capability22
#4 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Unladen ground clearance of 6.7–7.4 in depending on drivetrain is typical crossover height, with no skid plating, locking differential, terrain modes or off-road-oriented trim offered for 2019.

Powertrain lineup breadth12
#6 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

A single naturally aspirated 1.8L gas engine is the only powertrain offered across all five 2019 trims — no turbo, hybrid, or electrified option exists for this generation.

2Efficiency & RangeOne of the HR-V's strongest categories.2.97B-
3SafetyMid-pack among this car's ten categories.1.95C-
NHTSA overall rating
5 stars overall (4 stars frontal, 5 stars side, 4 stars rollover)
100/100
#1 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

NHTSA's overall 5-star rating for the 2019 HR-V is corroborated across multiple independent sources reporting the same frontal/side/rollover breakdown; nhtsa.gov itself returned 403 to automated fetch.

IIHS awards & crashworthiness70
#6 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Good across all six legacy crashworthiness tests, but Poor on the updated side-impact test is a real structural weakness, and the IIHS Top Safety Pick award (not TSP+) only applies to the Touring trim's LED headlights plus the optional front crash prevention system — not every configuration qualifies.

Standard ADAS suite breadth35
#5 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda Sensing (adaptive cruise, collision mitigation braking, lane keeping assist, road departure mitigation) is standard only on EX and above for 2019 — it is not available at all, standard or optional, on the base LX and Sport trims, which locks the core suite out of the volume/value trims.

Automatic emergency braking performance80
#1 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rated the optional Honda Sensing front crash prevention system Superior, avoiding collision entirely in both the 12 mph and 25 mph vehicle-to-vehicle test scenarios; no separate pedestrian AEB test result is published for this generation.

Blind-spot & cross-traffic coverage28
#7 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

No radar-based blind-spot monitoring or rear cross-traffic alert is offered at all on the 2019 HR-V; the closest feature is Honda LaneWatch, a passenger-side-only camera available from EX up, which covers one blind zone and provides no active intervention.

Lane keeping & centering58
#1 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Lane Keeping Assist and Road Departure Mitigation are functional on EX-and-above trims, with reviewers describing the system as workable but unremarkable rather than confidently centering.

Adaptive cruise & highway assist55
#2 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Adaptive cruise control with low-speed follow is available on EX-and-above trims and works in stop-and-go traffic, but reviewers specifically flagged an overly long following gap even at the closest setting, a rough edge rather than a refined implementation.

Hands-free driving availability5
#1 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

No hands-free highway driving system of any kind is offered on the 2019 HR-V at any trim.

Headlight performance25
#5 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

IIHS rated the headlights Poor on LX/Sport, Marginal on EX/EX-L, and only Acceptable on the top Touring trim — no trim achieves a Good rating, and the volume trims are the worst performers.

Outward visibility58
#6 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The HR-V's coupe-influenced roofline and thick rear roof pillars (housing the hidden rear door handles) narrow the rear three-quarter view, partially offset by a standard rearview camera; front and side sightlines are unremarkable for the segment.

Child-seat (LATCH) usability55
#5 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Rear LATCH anchors are present at both outboard rear positions and are reachable, but the HR-V's subcompact rear quarters and narrow door openings make fitting larger convertible or multiple car seats a tighter squeeze than in roomier compact SUVs.

4Space & ComfortOne of the HR-V's weakest categories.0.27F
Seating capacity
5 seats (all trims)
25/100
#1 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Two-row, five-passenger subcompact SUV across the entire 2019 HR-V lineup.

Front headroom
37.6 in (EX/EX-L/Touring, w/ moonroof); 39.5 in (LX/Sport, no moonroof)
12/100
#7 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

EX is the volume trim (per this vehicle's cat5 pricing scorecard) and carries the standard One-Touch Power Moonroof, which trims front headroom versus the moonroof-less LX/Sport.

Front legroom
41.2 in (all trims)

#5 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Front legroom is consistent across the lineup and mid-pack for the subcompact SUV class.

Rear headroom
38.3 in (all trims)
57/100
#4 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Rear headroom does not vary with the moonroof option and is competitive for a subcompact SUV.

Rear legroom
39.3 in (all trims)
77/100
#1 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

A genuine class strength — reviewers consistently note two adults fit comfortably in the back, unusual for this segment.

Third-row usability5
#2 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The HR-V is strictly a two-row subcompact SUV for 2019 with no third-row option in any configuration.

Cargo/trunk volume
24.3 cu ft behind rear seats (FWD); 23.2 cu ft (AWD)
0/100
#2 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

FWD is the volume drivetrain; AWD gives up roughly 1 cu ft to the battery/driveline packaging under the floor.

Max cargo volume
58.8 cu ft seats folded (FWD); 55.9 cu ft (AWD, EX/EX-L/Touring)
8/100
#1 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Magic Seat second row folds flat; FWD volume-trim figure used, with AWD figure noted for the moonroof-equipped EX and above.

In-cabin storage & clever solutions62
#1 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda's Magic Seat system (60/40 split rear seat that both folds flat and flips the cushion up for tall cargo) remains a genuine segment differentiator for 2019, though the under-console storage bin was removed when the CVT replaced the manual's shifter space in this generation.

Seat comfort42
#7 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers repeatedly flag a lack of lumbar support and front seats that feel confining on longer drives; EX adds heated cloth seats but not 8-way power adjustment, which is Touring-only.

Ride quality40
#5 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Reviews describe a choppy, jarring ride over ruts and potholes, smoothed out only over milder surface imperfections — below the segment's composed entries.

Cabin quietness35
#6 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Period reviews specifically pair the choppy ride complaint with a 'loud cabin,' citing road and wind noise intrusion at highway speed with no acoustic glass offered.

Climate & comfort features48
#2 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

EX adds heated front seats and a power moonroof standard, but there are no rear climate vents, no ventilated seats, and no heated steering wheel at any trim this generation.

5Cost of OwnershipThe HR-V's best-graded category.3.35B+
Base MSRP
$21,515 (LX FWD, incl. $995 destination)
100/100
#1 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda's 2019 HR-V press pricing release lists LX FWD at $20,520 plus $995 destination.

Volume-Trim Price
$24,715 (EX FWD, incl. $995 destination)
100/100
#1 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

EX is the volume/sweet-spot trim per Edmunds — adds Honda Sensing availability, CarPlay/Android Auto and alloy wheels over LX without reaching EX-L pricing.

5-Year Maintenance & Repair Cost
~$2,347 over 5 years
100/100
#1 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

CarEdge's 5-year scheduled maintenance + repair estimate for the HR-V; corroborated directionally by RepairPal's $301/yr average (vs. $466/yr subcompact-SUV average), reflecting Honda's strong reliability reputation.

5-Year Resale Value Retention
~71% retained after 5 years
100/100
#1 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Depreciation estimates cluster around 27-31% over 5 years (69-73% retention), notably better than the subcompact-SUV segment average depreciation of ~38%; the HR-V also won KBB's Best Resale Value Award for the segment in 2019.

Basic warranty
3 yr / 36,000 mi
0/100
#4 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Industry-standard minimum bumper-to-bumper term, at the floor of the segment band; Honda does not extend basic coverage beyond the common 3-year baseline.

Powertrain warranty
5 yr / 60,000 mi
0/100
#4 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Standard 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain term at the low end of the segment band — well short of the 10-year terms some rivals (Hyundai, Kia) offer.

Complimentary maintenance & perks58
#1 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda Service Pass covers complimentary scheduled maintenance for the first 2 years/24,000 miles (oil changes, tire rotations, multi-point inspections), plus 3-year/36,000-mile complimentary roadside assistance — a real but short included-maintenance window with no charging credits or connected-service trials relevant to a gas-only HR-V.

Effective 5-Year Ownership Cost
$9,514 (≈$7,167 depreciation + $2,347 maintenance)
100/100
#1 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

$24,715 volume-trim price minus its estimated resale value after 5 years (71% retained, or about $17,548) leaves about $7,167 in depreciation. Add the projected $2,347 in 5-year maintenance and repairs, and owning this vehicle for 5 years costs about $9,514 in total.

6Reliability & QualityOne of the HR-V's strongest categories.2.41C+
Predicted reliability70
#3 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Sources disagree on this generation: RepairPal rates the HR-V 5.0/5.0, ranked 1st of 7 subcompact SUVs, while Consumer Reports/U.S. News flagged below-average predicted reliability for the 2019 model year tied to CVT and infotainment complaints. No full redesign occurred for 2019 (facelift year only — revised styling, standard Honda Sensing), so new-model risk is limited.

Brand reliability track record65
#4 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda's multi-year standing is split by source: Consumer Reports' 2019 brand rankings placed Honda around 5th of 32 brands, while J.D. Power's 2019 Vehicle Dependability Study ranked Honda closer to the bottom third (27th of 32) that year. Net is a historically strong brand with a weak single-year JDP data point.

Recall & TSB history48
#7 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

This generation (2016-2022, including 2019) was hit by a recurring, safety-critical fuel pump recall issued in three separate campaigns (2020, 2021, and a 2023 industry-wide Denso fuel pump expansion covering ~2.49M vehicles) for stall risk, plus a rear brake caliper coating recall (2018, reduced braking performance) and a rearview camera display software recall (2023/2024). Three separate stall-risk campaigns on the same component is a repeated pattern, not an isolated minor issue.

Powertrain durability reputation58
#3 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The 1.8L SOHC four is a proven Honda engine family with a strong reputation for exceeding 200,000 miles with routine maintenance. The paired CVT is the weak point: owners report shuddering, hesitation, and harsh engagement after roughly 80,000 km, severe enough that Honda extended CVT warranty coverage to 7 years/150,000 miles for 2016-2020 HR-Vs and issued PCM software updates to improve longevity.

Interior material quality58
#2 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers consistently note hard, scratch-prone plastics on the dash and center console, with heavy use of fingerprint-attracting piano black trim, though key touch points (armrests, door cards) are padded and the cabin doesn't feel outright cheap for the mainstream subcompact segment.

Fit & finish70
#3 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Reviewers describe assembly as consistent with Honda's reputation — tight panel gaps and solid ergonomics — with 'first-rate fit and finish' called out specifically, scattered complaints about interior trim quality aside.

Dealer & service network82
#1 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda operates one of the largest dealer networks in the US, with Honda itself stating roughly 1,300 combined Honda/Acura dealerships nationwide as of the 2019 timeframe, giving near-universal service coverage.

Parts availability & repair cost85
#1 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

RepairPal reports the HR-V's reliability/cost profile as best-in-class for the subcompact SUV segment, with low average annual repair cost and Honda's famously deep OEM and aftermarket parts supply keeping repairs affordable and fast.

7Technology & InfotainmentOne of the HR-V's weakest categories.0.41F
Touchscreen size
7 in Display Audio (Sport through Touring); 5 in LCD (LX)
0/100
#1 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

EX, the volume trim, uses the 7-inch Display Audio unit shared with Sport, EX-L, and Touring; only base LX keeps the smaller 5-inch screen.

Infotainment UX & responsiveness55
#3 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The 2019 refresh reconfigured the Display Audio icon layout and, notably, restored a physical volume knob after years of criticism over the touch-only slider — a real usability improvement, though the underlying software remains unremarkable next to class leaders.

Wireless CarPlay / Android Auto55
#2 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

2019 is the first HR-V model year to offer Apple CarPlay and Android Auto at all, standard (wired only) on the 7-inch Display Audio trims including EX; no wireless projection is offered on any trim this generation.

Voice control & native navigation32
#4 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Factory navigation is reserved for the separate EX-L Navi trim, so the volume EX relies on basic Honda voice recognition and phone-projected maps; reviewers describe Honda's native voice system from this era as limited.

Audio system quality50
#6 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

EX steps up to the 180-watt, 6-speaker system shared with Sport through Touring — a clear improvement over the base LX's 160-watt/4-speaker setup, but there is no branded premium audio option anywhere in the lineup.

Digital instrument cluster22
#4 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The 2019 HR-V retains fully analog gauges with a small monochrome multi-information display; a configurable digital gauge cluster did not arrive on this nameplate until the 2023 redesign.

OTA update capability10
#5 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda's infotainment platform for this generation had no over-the-air update mechanism, for either software features or maps; any update required a dealer visit.

Companion app & remote functions50
#4 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The HondaLink app supports remote start, lock/unlock, vehicle locate, and Amazon Alexa integration, but the remote package is subscription-gated after a 3-month trial (~$110/yr).

Charging ports & device power30
#6 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

USB ports are limited to a pair in the center console bridge area with no rear-seat USB and no wireless charging pad offered at any trim — dated for a 2019 model year.

Keyless & remote access68
#1 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

EX adds Smart Entry proximity access with push-button start and Walk Away Auto Lock, plus HondaLink/key-fob remote start — a meaningful step up from LX/Sport's conventional key, though there is no phone-as-key capability this generation.

Camera & parking aids48
#1 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

EX adds Honda LaneWatch (a passenger-side blind-spot camera shown on the touchscreen) on top of the standard rearview camera, but there is no 360-degree surround view and no front or rear parking sensors offered on any 2019 trim.

Head-up display availability8
#3 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

No head-up display of any kind — windshield-projected or combiner-style — is offered on any 2019 HR-V trim.

8Use-Case FitGrades below the middle of the scale.1.03D
Kid & car-seat practicality52
#3 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Rear LATCH anchors are present and reachable and rear legroom (39.3 in) is genuinely strong for the class, but narrow rear door openings and the subcompact footprint make loading a bulky convertible seat or stroller tighter than in a compact SUV.

Family safety package62
#2 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

EX, the volume trim, includes standard Honda Sensing (ACC, forward collision warning, collision mitigation braking, road departure mitigation with lane keeping) and the HR-V earned an IIHS Top Safety Pick that model year — but only when paired with the optional front crash prevention and specific headlights, so the credential doesn't automatically extend to every EX build.

Family road-trip comfort40
#3 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Good rear legroom helps multi-hour trips, but a loud cabin, choppy ride, no rear climate vents, and no rear-seat entertainment or USB ports undercut long-haul comfort for four occupants.

Daily driving ease62
#4 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The HR-V's compact footprint, light controls, and good outward sightlines (aside from the thick rear C-pillar) make it easy in traffic, with the 2019-revised CVT smoothing out low-speed drivability even if it hesitates under harder throttle.

Commuting cost efficiency72
#2 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

30 MPG combined on regular unleaded (FWD) with a roughly $1,450/yr EPA fuel-cost estimate is among the cheaper options for daily commuting in the segment, and Honda's maintenance costs run well below the subcompact-SUV average.

Parking & maneuverability56
#7 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The HR-V's small footprint helps urban parking, but its 37.4-38.7 ft curb-to-curb turning diameter is wide for a subcompact SUV and there are no front or rear parking sensors at any trim to compensate — only a standard backup camera.

Work capability15
#3 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda does not certify the 2019 HR-V to tow a trailer in any configuration, and its small cargo floor and low payload ceiling leave it with essentially no serious work capability.

Durability for work duty38
#5 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda's reliability reputation is generally strong, but this specific generation carries a pattern of recurring fuel-pump recalls and the HR-V was never marketed or equipped (washable surfaces, skid plating) for hard work use.

Jobsite & upfit practicality12
#6 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

No onboard power outlets beyond standard 12V/USB, no tie-downs, no rack or upfit ecosystem, and no washable cargo surfaces are offered — the HR-V has essentially no jobsite-oriented provisions.

Long-distance comfort & range38
#5 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

A roughly 396-mile tank range is adequate, but a loud, choppy-riding cabin and a strained, noisy powertrain under highway passing load work against long-haul endurance, and ACC's long following gap (EX and above) is a minor driver-assist rough edge.

Outdoor & adventure capability48
#3 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Real Time AWD is available (optional LX-EX-L, standard Touring) with 6.7-7.4 in of ground clearance depending on drivetrain, enough for gravel roads and light snow, but there is no low-range, locking differential, terrain modes, or off-road trim.

Gear & luggage flexibility58
#1 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The Magic Seat system's fold-flat and flip-up second row genuinely helps swallow bulky or tall gear for a vehicle this size, though 24.3/58.8 cu ft cargo figures are modest in absolute terms and no roof rails are standard on the volume EX trim.

9Driving ExperienceGrades below the middle of the scale.1.03D
Handling & agility52
#3 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Reviews describe handling as secure and responsive in everyday driving but unremarkable and not especially engaging, without the body control or grip to stand out in the segment.

Steering feel45
#5 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Sources disagree somewhat — one review praises above-average feedback for the class, while another calls the steering vague — netting to numb-but-precise-enough rather than a genuine strength.

Braking confidence50
#4 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

No instrumented stopping-distance test or specific pedal-feel complaint for the 2019 HR-V was located; absent evidence of a standout or deficient brake tune, an average-for-class score is applied.

Powertrain smoothness & response38
#7 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The revised 2019 CVT adds stepped simulated ratios to cut classic CVT drone, but reviewers still describe rubber-band throttle response and hunting under hard acceleration, with the engine feeling outmatched by the HR-V's curb weight.

Drivetrain noise & vibration35
#6 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Noticeable engine drone under hard acceleration or highway passing is a recurring complaint, even with the 2019 CVT's stepped-ratio revision intended to mask it.

Turning circle
37.4 ft curb-to-curb (most trims); 38.7 ft (Sport)
58/100
#7 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

EX, the volume trim, uses the 37.4 ft figure shared by most trims; only Sport is wider at 38.7 ft.

Driving position & ergonomics55
#5 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

A slightly elevated seating position gives decent forward sightlines and easy ingress/egress for the class, offset by the coupe-like rear roofline hurting over-the-shoulder visibility and front seats that some reviewers call confining.

Fun-to-drive factor28
#5 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Weak acceleration, a droning CVT, and vague steering leave reviewers describing the HR-V as lacking any real driving enjoyment — an appliance rather than something enthusiasts would seek out.

10Value & Market PositionMid-pack among this car's ten categories.2.25C
Standard equipment generosity60
#5 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The 2019 refresh added Apple CarPlay/Android Auto and widened Honda Sensing availability, but the base LX stays fairly spartan (no Sensing, cloth seats, small touchscreen) — competitive for the price rather than loaded.

Feature value per dollar58
#6 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Clever Magic Seat cargo flexibility and above-average fuel economy for the segment are real value wins, offset by a underwhelming 141-hp engine/CVT and cabin materials reviewers call cheaper than rivals — net fair value, not a standout.

Trim & configuration breadth68
#2 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Five trims for 2019 (LX, Sport, EX, EX-L, Touring) spanning roughly $20.5K-$28.5K MSRP with FWD standard and AWD optional on every trim — a reasonably well-spaced range with no major gaps.

Sales popularity & market acceptance82
#1 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The HR-V set a new annual sales record in 2019 at 99,104 units, up 15.9% year-over-year, placing it among the subcompact-SUV segment's strongest sellers.

Brand desirability & image68
#2 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

Honda carries a strong mainstream reputation for reliability and resale that lifts the HR-V's desirability, though the brand reads as trusted rather than aspirational.

Deals & incentive availability40
#5 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

With 2019 demand at a record high and Honda's historically thin-incentive posture, buyers had little room to negotiate off MSRP that year — contemporary period reporting on HR-V-specific 2019 incentive amounts is sparse, so this leans on Honda's general incentive discipline during strong-selling years.

Model freshness62
#5 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

2019 is the first-generation HR-V's mid-cycle refresh (updated front/rear styling, two new trims, CarPlay/Android Auto, wider Honda Sensing availability) — meaningfully updated but riding on a platform dating to 2016, three years from a full redesign.

Critical reception & awards68
#5 of 7 Subcompact SUVsCompare all →

The 2019 HR-V earned IIHS Top Safety Pick, KBB's Best Resale Value Award and a Consumer Guide Best Buy Award for the segment, and KBB ranked it its top subcompact SUV of 2019 — strong recognition, though Edmunds' own instrumented review (7.6/10) dings its acceleration and interior materials relative to class leaders.
